YO LA TENGO
Genius + Love = Yo La Tengo
“EVANESCENT PSYCHIC PEZ DROP” - Apr ‘95 We recorded this one at our practice space for a Duophonic Super split single with Stereolab for our gear-fab UK tour of 1995. “DEMONS” - Apr ‘95 This song goes back to 1986 when it was known to us as “White Rabbit” which may or may not have had something to do with us naming our first album Ride the Tiger. We reworked it for the I Shot Andy Warhol soundtrack. Recorded at the Magic Shop, produced by Roger Moutenot. Tara Key on atmospheric guitar. ”FOG OVER FRISCO” - Oct ‘89 Georgia and I started playing this in 1989 on our acoustic duo tour (oh, how the Timbuk 3 crowd in KC loved us). Gene Holder played bass and produced the rock version at Water Music, which was then shelved until we completed it in 1991 for That Is Yo La Tengo. ”TOO LATE” - Dec ‘94 This Wire song was recorded by Roger Moutenot live at Alex the Great during Electro-pura. Mixed May 1995 by Peter Walsh at Tin Pan Alley. Listen for James’s scream. “HANKY PANKY NOHOW” - Sep ‘89 Tara helped us with this one, I no longer remember how. Recorded in the basement of our old house, featuring our microphone-shy cat on backing. vocals. Originally on the 1991 Spanish comp The Ruta 66 Album. “SOMETHING TO DO” - Oct ‘89 Before Arye Gross won our hearts in Ellen he appeared in a little cinematic treasure called A Matter of Degrees. And playing very quietly during a scene in a bar was this tune, produced by Gene at Water Music. That’s Gene on bass and Georgia taking the solo. “ULTRA-POWERFUL SHORT WAVE RADIO PICKS UP MUSIC FROM VENUS” - Jun ‘94 One of 16 or so songs we made up and recorded in an afternoon at Snack Time with Jad Fair. Recorded by Fred Brockman. “UP TO YOU” - Nov-Dec ‘94 Another Electr-o-pura outtake. Produced by Roger and mixed at Sound on Sound. “SOMEBODY’S BABY”- May ‘88 Produced very quickly by Kramer at Noise INY and included on the Homestead comp Human Music (cover art by Georgia). Remixed in May, 1996 by Peter

Walsh at Cherry Bomb. The Man in Black, Stephan Wichnewski, on bass. “WALKING AWAY FROM YOU” - Jan ‘91 Recorded at Water Music for That Is Yo La Tengo and a Bar/None 45. Produced by Gene, who also plays bass. Georgia on the two-note guitar. “ARTIFICIAL HEART” - Apr ‘91 James’s first recording with us. Recorded at Fun City by Wharton Tiers and featuring a guest appearance by Zeena Parkins on harp (Kramer had sold us some used tape, and there she was). From Delicacy and Nourishment, Lyrics by Ernest Noyes Brookings Volume 3. “CAST A SHADOW” - Jan ‘91 B-side of Walking Away from You.” Produced by Gene, who also played the classy lead guitar. Wilbo Wright on upright bass. “I’M SET FREE” - April ‘‘95 Outtake from the / Shot Andy Warhol session and no Entertainment Weekly reader has to ask why. Tara plays the guitar solo and Roger Moutenot produces. “BARNABY, HARDLY WORKING”
- Feb’ 90 Georgia, Dave Schramm and I went on Nick Hill’s Music Faucet show and this is the track he chose for the WFMU compilation They Came, They Saw, They Blocked the Driveway. Later that night we would back up a phoned-in Daniel Johnston. To help us prepare, WFMU air personality Gaylord Fields and Maxwell’s/Telstar impressario Todd Abramson called up and sang “Farmer John.”“SOME KINDA FATIGUE” - Feb ‘90 Fred Brockman recorded this May / Sing With Me revision at Snack Time for a Radiation (Spain) double 7” compilation This Is Art. “SPEEDING MOTORCYCLE” - Feb ‘90 Dave Schramm moves from lead guitar to organ. Georgia’s playing drums though you may not be able to hear her. Released on an SOL single without the chitchat and on the Bar/None Here Comes My Baby promo CD just like this. “NUTRICIA” - Jul ‘93 Recorded on James’s birthday by Fred Brockman at Snack Time, and released on the From a Motel 6 CD. “HER GRANDMOTHER’S GIFT, TOO MUCH (PARTS 1 & 2), ONE SELF: FISH GIRL and ENOUGH”May ‘94 All of these were produced by Gene at Water Music for soundtracks to animated films by Georgia’s sister Emily. “FROM A MOTEL 6 (PARTS 1 & 2)” - Jun-Aug ‘92 Two of the Painful demos recorded at Snack Time by Fred. Part 1 features the guitar riff, later discarded, around which the song was written. The same riff was the basis for our earlier song “The Summer” before being similarly excised. “GOOSENECK PROBLEM”Feb ‘93 Georgia vents some frustration in the practice room. “SURFIN’ WITH THE SHAH” - Feb ‘93 This Urinals cover is the first song we ever played live. This version recorded on the Dump Mobile Unit in the south of France where Matador sent us to write songs for a proposed musical based on the popular television program Small Wonder. “ECSTASY BLUES“ - May ‘89 Stephan on the fuzz bass. Another selection from the Here Comes My Baby CD. “BLITZKREIG BOP” - Feb ‘93 We gave this to a Japanese fanzine, but I have no memory which one. The arrangement dates back to our brief incarnation as a wedding band—we were much better at performing music for dining pleasure than for dancing pleasure. “DRUM SOLO” - Dec’ 92 Georgia vents some frustration during the recording of Painful. “SUNSQUASHED” - Jan ‘92 For all those who have clamored for an alternate take of this pop confection, the original of which can be found on the Alias Upside-Down CD. Recorded by Adam Lasus at Water Music. - Yo La Tengo’s Ira Kaplan

ELA MINUS DIA
OVERVIEW
Following her charged 2020 debut, acts of rebellion, Colombian producer and singer Ela Minus' second album DIA is a rarified feat in electronic music, where cutting-edge production and spaceshuddering sonics meet a burgeoning singer-songwriter’s real sense of self-reflection and private reckoning. Where acts of rebellion, a “breathtaking techno-pop debut” (Remezcla), felt intentionally small, as if pounding inside the club with late-night reverie, DIA is both introspective and expansive, the wide sweep of its songs revealing more of Ela as person and producer than ever before.
DIA is a record about becoming, from a process that entailed self-discovery at a deliberate pace to songs that seem to collectively ask where we go from here, long after we’ve been broken but long before we intend to be broken forever. Throughout the 10 songs, mixed by Marta Salogni and mastered by Heba Kadry, the same team behind acts of rebellion, Ela seems to saddle a line between worlds of pop accessibility and experimental aplomb, her incandescent choruses always surrounded by meticulous and imaginative sonics. Opening the mountain, DIA marks the next phase of Ela Minus’ career and life without declaring where any of it may or must go.

Nourished By Time’s debut album, Erotic Probiotic 2, tells his transformative story through impeccable songwriting, infectious ear worm melodies, vivid storytelling and intimate DIY production. The album traveresses a broad spectrum of sound, allowing his songwriting to dictate the ever changing mood he orchestrates; whether it is love or loss. Sitting somewhere between indie, pop, alternative RnB, ultimately carving out a fresh sound defined by his vulnerable vocals, raw guitar licks and undeniable groove.
The album was recorded mostly in 2021 - 22 in his parents basement in Baltimore. “At this time, I was in a beautiful and formative relationship that was running its course. Songs like ‘Unbreak My Love’ and ‘Rain Water Promise’ come from that place of dealing with the end. A story of lovers parting and making sense of the battling feelings of resentment and longing. As well as the existential aspect of having to end of a relationship. All while with dealing long-time depression, songs like lead single “Quantum Suicide” and “Shed That Fear” exhibit the importance of choosing to live and that getting out of pits of despair requires tremendous amounts of effort and intention and is a very difficult lifelong task. Whilst other tracks such as ‘The Fields’ and ‘Daddy’ and ‘Workers Interlude’ are attempts at trying to aim my anger at productive targets like Capitalism which both songs are a critique of.”

GRATEFUL DEAD:
Dick’s Picks Vol. 3—Pembroke Pines,
Florida 5/22/77 & (Limited, Hand-Numbered, 180-Gram 4-LP Set)
STREET DATE: JANUARY 17, 2025
Grateful Dead archivist Dick Latvala considered this show to be the finest outing on the entire Spring 1977 tour, and, as any Dead Head knows, that is high praise indeed! At the time this was released on CD, the Dead weren’t sure a market existed (ha!) for three and four-CD packages, so this four-LP set leaves off eight songs from the show, but consider what songs are here: a phenomenal “Help on the Way”/”Slipknot!”/”Franklin’s Tower” comes after one of the definitive renditions of “Sugaree” and a terrific “The Music Never Stopped,” with Phil Lesh’s slithering bass leading the way in recording engineer’s Betty Cantor-Jackson’s mix. But sides E, F & G offer one of those sublime (and, in this case, never to be repeated) sequences of songs that only the Dead could pull off in concert; after the rarely-performed “Sunrise,” a medley of “Estimated Prophet”/”Eyes of the World”/”Wharf Rat”/”Terrapin Station” (a truncated version two months before its official release)/”Morning Dew” brings the show home, as Jerry Garcia’s soloing on “Morning Dew” reaches heights seldom attained even by him. This was a knockout release on its first very limited vinyl run (check out those resale prices), and we’ve improved on it with a fresh mastering job by Jeffrey Norman (in his own words, “the sound is better than the original heard on the Brookvale release”), and lacquer cutting by Clint Holley and Dave Polster at Well Made Music. Pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at the plant we’ve been using to great acclaim for all of our Grateful Dead releases, Gotta Groove Records, and limited to 2000 hand-numbered copies!

Since its release in 2009 The Pains of Being Pure At Heart status of a modern indiepop classic, and even more crucially a record that continues to have an impact well beyond the indiepop scene. As one of the key bands in Brooklyn’s late 00s guitar music revival (alongside Crystal Stilts, Grizzly Bear, Vivian Girls, Frankie Rose and others) The Pains paid tribute to everything from C86 to early Slumberland, Sarah and Creation label pop, but with a distinct American flavor drawn from groups like Smashing Pumpkins and The Pixies.
Their debut album exploded immediately, going places that indiepop records and bands rarely do (like TV appearances on Carson Daly's and David Letterman's shows) and leading to several years of constant touring and the further release of two more well-received albums. Now we’re happy to bring this album back to a new generation of pop fans with its first widely-available vinyl repress in several years, this time on unique, eye-catching silver nugget vinyl. A fitting tribute to a modern indiepop classic.

To celebrate Frank Black’s landmark solo album, Teenager Of The Year, turning 30 comes a special vinyl pressing to accompany a tour of North America plus Paris and London where Frank and original band will be performing the album in its entirety.
Recorded amid a rich songwriting vein, just as the Pixies had been placed on hold, Frank Black’s ambitious 22-track album Teenager Of The Year came out in May 1994, just one year after his fantastic self-titled solo debut. Recorded with scene legend Eric Drew Feldman (Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band, Pere Ubu, The Residents) and featuring the single ‘Headache’, Teenager Of The Year is seen by many as his greatest solo work, subsequently appearing in both Pitchfork’s Top 100 Albums of the 1990s poll and the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die book.
For its 30th anniversary, Frank Black and original band are heading out in January 2025 on a 14-date tour of North America, Paris and London where they’ll be performing Teenager Of The Year from start to finish each night. To complement, 4AD are releasing a special vinyl tour edition of the album, with Kevin Vanbergen having expertly remastered the album from its original analogue studio tapes. Sounding as essential as ever, the limited 30th Anniversary Tour Edition has been cut at 45 rpm for optimum playback and is being pressed on double gold vinyl. It also comes in a gatefold sleeve that includes liner notes by both Frank Black and producer Eric Drew Feldman.
A 24-bit digital version is being released on the same day.

Press Quotes
“Teenager of the Year might just be the highwater mark... Like a lost Pixies album in the way Ram feels like a lost Beatles album. It’s colossal, it teems with innovation. It’s as discombobulating &, in many ways, as impenetrable as anything the great man has ever done, & all the better for it.”
The Quietus
“Teenager of the Year has come to be regarded as the defining statement of his solo career. Spanning 22 sprawling tracks & more than 60 minutes, beneath its initially rabid veneer lie moments brilliant enough to rival any of the Pixies’ 1990s work, & Black’s greatest lyrical achievements.” Pitchfork (Top 100 Albums of the 1990s)

49 WINCHESTER - III
“Hailing from Castlewood, VA in the heart of Appalachia, the five-piece 49 Winchester serves it up greasy, whether it’s Southern fried rock, honky tonk country, sentimental moments tickling the fringes of Americana, or a version of soul that takes all of those influences and stews them. It’s always Southern, but the variety of flavors you’re served keeps you on your toes for 10 tracks. And eventually an album you start off thinking might be good for a quick hoot turns out running through a range of emotions you may have not been ready for, though you sure do appreciate the ride afterwards.” - Saving Country Music

Combining the brazenness of Riot Grrrl with the angst dirge of grunge, Team Dresch didn’t just raise the stakes of queercore: They created two near-perfect albums about longing, freedom, and belonging over guitar riffs as epic and intense as Jody Bleyle and Kaia Wilson’s poetic couplets. On their 1995 debut, Personal Best, they rage against the Christian right and small towns, then kiss their girlfriends on the mouth. Donna Dresch, Bleyle, and Wilson play ferocious, intricate riffs fast while Marcéo Martinez hits the drums hard. To paraphrase their own song, they are amazing; their words save us.

Like a textile artist, Flora Hibberd weaves layers of meaning into her music. Secret codes, non-verbal signifiers, and musical manifestations filter throughout Swirl’s 11 songs, expertly captured by producer Shane Leonard at his home studio in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. “We didn’t talk much about what the songs meant to me before we started recording them,” explains Hibberd. “Instead, we talked about codes, symbols, and machines. Almost intuitively, Shane built up these layers of morsecode-like synths or pedal steel riffs.” Alongside Leonard’s own contributions, he invited versatile drummer JTBates (Bon Iver, Taylor Swift), pedal steel player BenLester (Sufjan Stevens, The Tallest Man On Earth), bassist PatKeen, singer/songwriter JESunde, and Hibberd’s longtime collaborator VictorClaass filling various roles.

Overa longer period, Krokofant has included organist Ståle Storløkken and bassistIngebrigt Håker Flaten. With two albums, loads of concerts and raving reviews with this line-up, this constellation is over for now- andKrokofant is back again as atrio. This is ofcoursemarked witha new trio album with brandnew music.
The resurrection of the trio has been a doozy for the band and has rekindledthe joy of a more intense improvisationalinterplay andfun of making songs together again. While the quintet was moreof a playground forHasslan´s prog-rock compositions, the triois morefocused onthe collectiveand sculpting the music together rather thanthe morerigid songstructures of the quintet.
Krokofant’s sound is deeply rooted in the 70s, withsubtlenods to King Crimson, Soft Machine, combined with a strong John Coltraneinfluence fromJørgen. Even though this is not a rarethingin today’s plethora of Norwegian jazz/rock bands, theirsound is stillquiteunique, andKrokofant stands as one of thefounders of the current progressive jazz sounds sweeping the Country.
Fromthe first tune “Harry Davidson”, it’s apparent that the classic Krokosound is still intactwith a chuggingriff and catchy melody,to the more jazzy chordbasedtune“Triple Dad”, and thespacial atmospheric sound of “The Ballade”, this albumensures to hit both rock fans, free jazzers andjazzrock nostalgics in the gut.

Storm Season emerged froma perfectstorm of chaos. White Willow’s fourthstudioalbum marked a bold shift, taking aheavier, moremetallic turncomparedto their earlier releases. Its creation reflected turbulence bothwithintheband and in the worldaroundthem. Theintensity of the music nearly tore apartthe Norwegian prog rock pioneers, even leading to thedeparture of vocalist Sylvia Erichsenfor severalyears.Yet, out of this turmoil came their breakthrough. "We wanted tocreate analbumthat felt like a storm—areflection of the turmoil in the worldwithclimate change and politicalunrest, andalso within ourownlives," explains guitarist and bandleader JacobHolm-Lupo.
Originally released in 2004, Storm Season became White Willow's first albumto sell over 10,000 copies. Itstands as oneof their mostdirectand impactful musical statements, blending theirclassical progand folk-rock roots with a heavier, more streamlined sound.
This re-release, meticulously remastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo, brings new lifeto the album, featuring the iconic originalcover art and available for thefirsttime on vinyl. It’s the fourthina series of six White Willow re-releases onKarisma Records.

WIZRD is aboundary-pushing Norwegianrock band that effortlessly blends genres, from rock and indie tojazz and prog. Whilethey know therules, they takepride in breakingthem.Ontheir highly anticipated second album, Elements, WIZRDdives deeper into uncharted musicalwaters— experimenting with new styles, freshmelodic paths, andboth extendedand condensed song structures, allwhile introducing Norwegian lyrics.Though the album is eclectic, it remains unmistakably WIZRD, unifiedby a distinct, cohesive sound.
Recorded at the legendary Athletic Sound studio in Halden, the ambianceof both the studio and the city itself left anindelible mark on Elements. Theresult is an album that feels organic yet unpredictable, witha mix of carefully crafted andspontaneous elements. Every decision inthe making of thealbuminfluenced its outcome—change onething, and Elements would havebeensomething entirely different. Co-produced, recorded, and mixed by DagErik Johansen alongside the band, his contributions were vitaltoshaping the final sound.
Formed at theJazz Conservatory inTrondheim, WIZRD's lineup features four talented musicians: HallvardGaardløs (Spidergawd, Draken) on bass and lead vocals,Karl Bjorå (MegalodonCollective) on guitarandvocals, Vegard Lien Bjerkan(Soft Ffog) onkeyboards and vocals, and Axel Skalstad (Krokofant, Soft Ffog) ondrums. CHAPPAQUIDDICK SKYLINE
(25th Anniversary Vinyl Pressing)
In the waning months of the previous millennia, Joe Pernice wrote and recorded what would become Chappaquiddick Skyline. Now, 25 years after its original issue, New West Records is proud to release a limited edition pressing on vinyl for the very first time. The 25th Anniversary pressing will be available on clear and standard black vinyl in an edition of 1000 copies each.
Chappaquiddick Skyline was released following the Pernice Brothers’ critically acclaimed Sub Pop debut Overcome by Happiness. Recorded at home on 8-Track with Thom Monahan producing, Joe Pernice and Monahan are joined by Pernice Brothers bandmates Peyton Pinkerton, Laura Stein, Mike Belitsky, as well as countless friends who stopped by to help out.
In explanation of the record and of the Chappaquiddick moniker in 1999, Joe Pernice originally said, “Not every kid makes the team. They’re almost always good kids. Maybe a little overweight, maybe they think with the other side of their brains, who knows? The songs on Chappaquiddick Skyline are all that kid.”

Swervedriver
Doremi Faso Latido LP
While Swervedriver were putting together the reissue of their landmark 99th Dream LP last year, they discovered a wealth of B-sides and outtakes. These rare tracks were collected and were initially only available as a bonus disc with the CD, but their fans, quite rightly, insisted that this collection of songs could stand on their own as an LP, sort of an alternative version of 99th Dream if you will, and that they should be pressed on vinyl.
The Doremi LP was quietly released to the fans via Swervedriver’s mail order in the Fall of 2024, but we were immediately swamped with messages from stores looking for copies, so we decided that an extremely limited, one-time pressing for cool indie stores was in order. Don’t miss out on your opportunity to grab this before it's gone!

THRILL JOCKEY
Rose City Band’s music is sun-kissed timeless country rock whose seemingly effortless momentum carries the joy of its creation without ignoring the darkness pervading our consciousness. Led by guitarist/vocalist Ripley Johnson, the music of Rose City Band is rooted in his love of private press records of the mid to late 70’s. The band, in addition to Johnson, features pedal steel guitarist Barry Walker, keyboardist Paul Hasenberg and drummer John Jeffrey who enmesh a keen sense of rhythmic drive and melody with gentler, sumptuous atmospheres. Nuanced performances and interplay between players unfurl like desert flowers splashing color onto an arid landscape. The ensemble’s buoyant moments still glide with ease, but there is room to revel in respite of the shade of a dark cloud. Across the album, Johnson’s tasteful guitar interjections and soothing voice are met in kind with the versatile playing of Walker, Hasenberg, and Jeffery, with special guest performances by synthesist/vocalist, Sanae Yamada. Album closer “The Walls” perfectly captures the band’s explorative and expansive songs, Hasenberg’s soulful organ driving the album to an emotionally cathartic conclusion. Throughout his prolific career with Wooden Shjips, Moon Duo and now Rose City Band, Johnson’s music has consistently centered around exploration and discovery. Sol Y Sombra imbues his penchant for space and resplendent tonality with a denser amalgam of his influences through a delicate balance of the somber and the serene, of subtle evolutions and familiar sounds, Sol Y Sombra makes for a holistically joyous experience, finding solace in both sun and shade.

THRILL JOCKEY
Midori Hirano and Brueder Selke’s debut album Split Scale unites two artists who share both inimitable skill and depth of expression. Pillars of Berlin’s new music community and globally lauded composers, they each share a background in classical tradition while practicing on the cutting edge of modern music. Split Scale is an elegant emotive ambient album built primarily from pianos and cello and electronics. After tracks on Longform Editions and the creation and curation of the Q3Ambientfest, this power pairing should be an immediate hit with fans of quality ambient or minimal modern music.
As Brueder Selke, the polymath duo brothers Daniel and Sebastian Selke’s interdisciplinary partnerships are vast and include classical institutions like the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie and Filmorchester Babelsberg. The brothers have additionally been working as musical directors of the Schaffrath Chamber Orchestra and curating their own festival Q3Ambientfest which has featured the likes of fellow artists such as Laura Cannell, Mabe Fratti/Resina, Jules Reidy, Grand River, Yair Elazar Glotman, and now-collaborator Midori Hirano.
Midori Hirano’s mastery of sound sculpting has put her in high demand as a composer for film and television, including recent soundtracks for All or Nothing, Tokito, and a documentary on the Premier League, alongside astounding collaborations with artists including Hprizm of Anti Pop Consortium and Ilpo Väisänen of Pan Sonic. In addition to her own composing, Hirano has remixed the likes of Robot Koch and Rival Consoles. Split Scale, the group’s first album together, follows a series of live collaborations. The artists chose a simple concept, following a western scale from beginning to end, and from this created a suite of sublime, synesthetic soundscapes and cinematic movements. The vivid tapestry of sound and color is luminous and emotive.

David Allred is a prolific composer and producer based in Portland, Oregon. His new album The Beautiful World captures an enriched, realised understanding of why he composes in the first place. Dedicated to the expression of existential themes such as death, grief, longing and loss, the album’s core theme centres around the suicide of a young girl Lauren, who was a family friend to Allred. For as long as he could remember, Allred always created music out of a kind of dissociative state which he finds alluringly easy to lapse into. A repetition of a motif is usually where he begins composing. But unlike his previous works, The Beautiful World firmly has one foot in reality and is deeply intertwined with Allred’s relationships, past and present.
For some musicians, a change in instrumentation, theme or learning a new artistic vocabulary helps them to move in a different direction. The 11 track album unfolds around Oh Lauren, providing the core of the album’s sentiment – how grief returns to us throughout life over and over. Embedded more than halfway through the album, Allred allows listeners to cohabit a meditative space through ambient textures, drones and ballads echoing the vocal sincerity of Arthur Russell, Daniel Johnston and the hypnotic storytelling of Robert Ashley. Allred’s gorgeous melodic sense creates its own universe where the album’s songs live and breathe. He also has an intuitive understanding of the space between each note, and how to manipulate their decay to create otherworldly harmonics which envelop the sonic tapestry.
Compositions like Look and The Beautiful World provide tethers to Allred’s everyday existence. On Look he describes situations as simplistic as ordering a pizza with poignancy and bittersweetness. But lyrically, Allred “leans more abstract” than concrete. “I want to belong in the beautiful world” becomes mantra-like on the album’s title track, followed by Allred’s drifting observations set to a steady drone and percussion that sounds like the click of a Polaroid camera. The instrumental pieces like Introverts as Leaders and Good Afternoon provide a delicate compliment to Allred’s lyric-focused pieces. The latter’s stuttering, granular-sounding synths pair with funereal organ, which beautifully captures the feelings of longing and loss that the songwriter is driven to communicate. These wordless spaces encompass Allred’s desire to make music that appeals primarily to the heart rather than the head.
The Beautiful World is therefore heavily influenced by Allred’s work in therapy, particularly his relationship to writing music. In the past, Allred would be composing music as a means to dissociate from his life, but the album sees him engaging and connecting more authentically than ever with others and himself. Despite his prolific previous works being made in the company of others, Allred needed to step back from the scenes that he’s worked in to discover what he really wanted to create. Allred concludes: “In the power of love, curiosity, humour, and reconciliation, we give you The Beautiful World.

Came By To Kill Me
Solid Brass Records Catalog #: SBR17
Street Date: January 24, 2025
Originally released in 1996 as a Slowdime / Dischord Records split label release, Kerosene 454’s sophomore album Came By To Kill Me, is now back in print after 28 years.
Hailing from the Maryland/Washington DC area, Kerosene 454 existed from 1992-1998. They released three albums, five seven inch records, and appeared on several compilations. One of the hardest working bands at the time, they played extensively across the U.S., Europe, and Japan with bands like Bluetip, Boys Life, Hoover, The VSS, Karate, The Dismemberment Plan, Unwound and more.
Came By to Kill Me were the first recordings written exclusively with drummer Darren Zentek (formerly of the band, Glendale) and came at a time when the band felt like they were moving at 100 miles per hour. The album was recorded over 6 days in the summer of 1996 with J. Robbins (Jawbox, Magpie Cage Studio) and Don Zientara at Inner Ear Studios with help from Juan Carrera (Warmers, Slowdime Records).
In September, the band announced a partnership with Solid Brass records to begin work on reissuing their catalog. Came By To Kill Me has been completely remastered from the original tapes by Dan Coutant at Sunroom Audio in Cornwall, NY. Came By To Kill Me will be available digitally for the first time ever as well as limited edition vinyl variants for Solid Brass Records (Silver Smoke) and an indie retailer exclusive (Eco Graphite).
BrianAuger’sOblivionExpress
CloserToIt
Brian Auger formed The Oblivion Express in 1970 after the demise of his chart topping jazz & R&B combo Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger, and The Trinity. Deciding he would continue to defy creative expectations with his genre bending vision, Auger even based the groups name around this precarious anti-commercial approach; “I decided that I would like to push on and see whether I could develop that music" he recalls,"butmaybeI’mheadedthequickestwaytooblivion!,”
Auger needn't have worried, the bands first slew of albums; the heavy, jazz rock influenced debut 'Oblivion Express,' 1971s laconic, folky 'A BetterLand',theprotojazzfunkof'StraightAhead'releasedin1972,all made serious inroads into the United States, which proved to particularlyfertilegroundforthegroup.
By 1973, the London born Auger felt his various American influences of jazz, R&B, funk and soul had fermented into his own brand of fusion, and upon listening to the final mixes, was confident he was approaching his original musical mission, hence naming the album CloserToIt.
It's predecessor, Straight Ahead had hit the US charts, and awoken RCA Records to the crossover potential of this somewhat undefinable music, who stepped up their game in regards the follow up, which broke out in the Tri State area, where it received major radio and press support and billboard advertising whilst the band were touring. All these factors combined favourably and resulted in Closer To It entering the BillboardJazz,R&BandRockchartssimultaneously!
For a British multi-racial group composed of fans of African American music, this was both creatively and commercially satisfying. This acceptance of the Oblivion Express’ sound and style also led to the band touring with Herbie Hancock's Head-hunters and Earth Wind & Fire, and Brian receiving a US Congressional Certificate of Special Recognitionforhis‘contributiontotheAmericanartformofJazz’.
FORFANSOF:
Herbie Hancock's Head-hunters / The Average White Band / Sly & The Family Stone / Traffic / Jimmy Smith.
Regarded as his masterpiece, Closer To It features some of Augers' most inventive and beautiful Hammond Organ and Fender Rhodes playing, on tunes that become the defining tracks of his career, especiallytheanthemicopenerWheneverYou'reReady,co-writtenwith bass player Barry Dean. Happiness Is Just Around The Bend was later covered by Cuba Gooding Snrs' band The Main Ingredient who had a major hit with their version. Auger also saluted his soul and jazz hero's with his versions of Marvin Gays Inner City Blues and Eddie Harris, Les McCann'sclassicComparedToWhat.
With an iconic cover featuring the Oblivion Express train logo designed by Auger's wife Ella. Closer To It remains a highpoint in Auger's recordingcareer.
