NATIONAL release date: CD/lp: 01.25.2010 After two years experimenting in the shadows, cutting edge minimalistfunk heroes Fujiya & Miyagi are back with their darkest and most propulsive set yet. The band’s fourth full-lengther, Ventriloquizzing has a dark heart via its throbbing electro-glam beat and menacing lyrics. “I think there's an underlying anger, or perhaps just annoyance, at institutions and people in general, and probably ourselves too,” says singer/guitarist David Best. For the first time the band has worked with a co-producer in the form of famed producer Thom Monahan (Devendra Banhart, Vetiver, Pernice Brothers): "It seemed like the right time to work with someone else to help us avoid going to our default setting", says David. Written in Brighton, UK and recorded in Sacramento, CA; Ventriloquizzing is likely the first (and last) black comedy you can dance to.

STREETDATE: 01.25.10 Celebrated songwriter and musician Edie Brickell will release two new albums this January on her own independent label, racecarLOTTA Records. The first, Edie Brickell, is out January 11 and The Gaddabouts will follow on January 25. Coinciding with these releases, Brickell will perform a special show with Iron & Wine on January 29 at Radio City Music Hall. Additionally, The Gaddabouts will make their live debut at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall as part of the WFUV concert series on April 8. Produced by Charlie Sexton, Brickell began writing her self-titled solo album during her 2003 tour in support of Volcano. The solo record was then put hold to focus on The Gaddabouts, a new project featuring Steve Gadd, Pino Palladino and Andy Fairweather-Low. The group’s forthcoming debut is composed of material written by Brickell over the past decade as well as songs written with the band in the studio the very day of recording. Both conceived of and developed throughout the past decade, the two resulting projects were only coincidently finished at the same time. Say Hi has broken up thirty seven times in the last decade. If the band were what most casual listeners assume it is (i.e., a traditional four piece rock outfit), things would have run their course shortly before the release of the first record in 2002. But the resilient (if mopey) bedroom recordist Eric Elbogen, who performs everything you hear on the Say Hi records and recruits musicians to perform the material live, always manages to continue moving forward, despite the ample foils that keep presenting themselves.

Um, Uh Oh is the result of the last ten years of Elbogen’s experiences with failing relationships, both musical and otherwise. It is also his best record to date. It’s weary and blue-noted, revealing, personal and pained and there’s expressiveness in his performance absent from previous releases. In fact, it’s difficult to fathom that the same songwriter that once wrote the sugary frivolity of the early Say Hi material could have written such a mature collection of songs.

Phil Manley Life Coach Thrill - 258
Phil Manley, founding member of the pioneering DC-trio Trans Am, and in-demand recording engineer (The Alps, Arp, Mi Ami, Moon Duo, Wooden Shjips) has recorded his debut solo album. Life Coach, a title inspired by Tony Williams Lifetime and Charles Bullen’s Lifetones project, is a dynamic collection of instrumental songs composed, performed, and recorded entirely by Phil. While there are reflections of Phil’s work in Trans Am, Oneida, The Fucking Champs, and Jonas Reinhardt that a listener familiar with those bands will notice, Life Coach is more minimal and adheres to the structures of German rock of the mid 70’s that has long inspired Phil, specifically the free-spirited and loose arrangements, the propulsive “motorik” pulse, and the sonic textures or “Klangfarben” (translated “sound colors”). German analog recording technology had reached its zenith in the late 70’s. This coincided nicely with the careers of such artists as Neu!, Kraftwerk, Harmonia, Cluster and Popol Vuh. German recording engineer Connie Plank, a hero of Phil’s, was responsible for most of the greatest recordings of each of these bands. Life Coach pays homage to the “Klangfarben” of Connie Plank’s recordings. In order to achieve the desired results, Phil reached most often for his Fender Telecaster electric guitar because of its “bell-like” tone. Generally speaking, plugging his guitar directly into his API preamps achieved the most “direct” sound by literally cutting out the amplifier stage from the signal chain. This positions the musician and the listener that much closer together, something that the personal nature of this music and the process demanded. For the acoustic numbers, Phil used his vintage 1967 Gibson Country-Western steel string acoustic guitar. This guitar was miked with a highly sensitive and expensive Neumann condenser microphone to capture all the nuance and detail of his finger picking. The signal was left clean with little to no processing, and no equalizers or compressors. “These devices tend to cloud the signal and interfere with the natural sound of the source,” says Phil. A varied compliment of synthesizers were used to make this record including a Roland Juno 60, Crumar Orchestrator (a gift from old friend and sometimes Trans Am producer John McEntire), Roland Organ Strings, Arp String Ensemble, Mini Moog and Roland GR-20 guitar synth. All synths were played live, eschewing sequencers for a more human feel. Finally a Roland TR-606 Drumatix drum machine was used for its “warm” analog sound quality. This deeply personal debut solo recording comes well into Phil Manley’s musical career. The song titles and the album title reflect to a large extent Phil’s sense of humor, well known to most Trans Am fans. He has always been the kind to poke fun at rock’s history and habits. To those of us who have had the pleasure of working closely with him, it is a reflection of his modesty. He is a man who has made a considerable mark on independent music. He has already had a lifespan that exceeds most bands in this world, and yet he never has fallen prey to taking himself too seriously. He only takes his music seriously, the rest he takes with a large grain of salt.

Napoléonette focuses on the piano and Matt’s voice. “Matt” is Rock-n-Roll musician and songwriter Matthew Friedberger, a Chicagoan. Mr. Friedberger considers R-n-R an anti-vocational sphere of endeavor, as is obvious from its epithet, so spelled, Q.E.D. Therefore a C.V. is drastically inappropriate. But or so: since 2003, Friedberger has released eight albums with the band he runs with his sister Eleanor, The Fiery Furnaces. The band is planning to record its ninth album before Christmas upcoming. Perhaps the group’s catchiest and most aggressive effort to date, arranged as a concerto for Drum Kit and String Orchestra, this as yet untitled effort may contain such songs as “I met the Queen of the Night in the daytime”, “I was so confused”, “The City of the Sun”, “As insufficient as an Eskimo’s kimono”. And many more. His six record set, Solos in which he plays only a single given instrument per album (though not necessarily the same actual individual example of the single given instrument), is designed to illustrate the following Cretan-Lacedaemonian principle. Every group of instruments against every other group of instruments; every instrument against every other instrument; and especially, every instrument against itself, all alone. See Laws, Book 1, 626 d. This idea jibes quite well with certain notions that have often been thought constitutively American, no doubt unfortunately. Friedberger thinks it therefore illuminating to apply this principle to such a pre-eminently American music as the aforementioned R-n-R. Despite the fact that this application is no doubt already ongoing. Mr. Friedberger will again be scoring the Guggenheim’s production of Rob Pruitt presents: The Art Awards, an awards event and performance piece conceived and co-ordinated by the artist Rob Pruitt. This second annual event will take place in New York at Webster Hall on December 9th. The music this year will refer to Webster Hall’s history of various like amusements, up to and including its period as The Ritz. But no further. Mr. Friedberger is at work on a book called The Progressive Use of Popular Culture 1: Music. In this work, about the same length as Jason Alexander’s non-existent Acting without Acting, he attempts to advance--or exaggerate--the egalitarian potential of the irreducibly esoteric nature of the popular arts. He considers Rock-n-Roll, or Rock ‘n Roll, or Rock, or This Thing, to be the Queen, or King, or Tyrant of Indeterminate Gender, of the Popular Arts. The word Tyrant in the last sentence is meant to include a sense of necessary illegitimacy.

GENRE : WORLD FILE UNDER: “T” Touré, Sidi Sidi Touré, born in 1959 in the ancient town of Gao, Mali, made his first guitar as a child, constructing it from his wooden writing slate. For the Malian singer growing up he faced a conflict between the inexorable pull of music and the expectations of family and society, plus the significance and onus of a past that came with being born into a noble family. The Touré family had been sung about, and sung to, by traditional griots for centuries, but until Sidi Touré challenged the rules as a small boy, the Touré’s did not sing. Despite his family’s disapproval, Sidi became the lead singer of his school’s band, and then became the youngest member of Gao’s regional orchestra, the Songhaï Stars, who played bi-annual festivals like the Bamako Biennale and toured both regionally and nationally. After winning the award for best singer twice, he took the band to the northern regions of Mali and to Niger, and toured much of the western Sahel region. Throughout his time making music, Sidi’s sound has both captured and challenged his roots. His music moves from the translucent swaying takamba to the trance inducing Holley, while the lyrics often address many non-traditional issues. Sidi has a critical mind and his songs have a purpose. At its heart, Sahel Folk, Thrill Jockey’s debut release with Sidi Touré, is an album of friends reuniting around a glass of tea. It’s Sidi Touré’s second album, but the first time most of his collaborators have been documented. Chronicled in a live “field-recording” style at Sidi’s sister’s house, the simplicity of the takes highlight the beauty of the songs and the skill of the players. Each track on the album is a duet recording of Sidi and one friend, a product of a very specific two-day process. On the first day, the friends would meet, play, and choose a song over a glass of tea. On the second day they would record the song, allowing themselves just two takes to retain the spontaneity of the recording and reunion. It was the original intent of Covalesky, the album’s producer, to create an historical document about the traditions of Gao, and to mix the audio of Sidi and his friends’ songs with street recordings and interviews. However, once the recording started, everything changed. Covalesky puts it best when he says “In the face of such beauty and power delivered so simply by Sidi Touré and his friends, there was nothing to add. Everything was there.”

Cleared is the Chicago duo of Steven Hess and Michael Vallera.
Cleared was formed in the latter part of 2009 as a project meant to focus on repetition and patience as central elements of composition. Hess and Vallera have previously worked in various contexts of improvisational, long form and experimental music. Cleared is an effort to take the knowledge both have gained from these arenas in order to build hypnotic patterns of sound and rhythm.

The sessions that created the material for the initial tracks were made in Steven Hess’s Chicago studio in an extremely straightforward manner of recording. Percussion, electronics, field recordings and other experiments were arranged and supplemented with synthesis and guitar. Frequently, parts of the original audio recordings were sampled and further manipulated back into the work. The result is a body of songs that are simultaneously familiar and indistinguishable in their instrumentation. Steven Hess is a member of On (with Sylvain Chauveau), Haptic, Ural Umbo, and has recorded and performed with such artists as Pan•American, Stefan Németh (Radian), David Daniell & Douglas McCombs, Fennesz, Locrian, Dropp Ensemble, and Sylvain Chauveau. Steven has recorded for Type Records, Utech, Kranky, Thrill Jockey, Entr’acte and Digitalis, to name a few. Michael Vallera has recorded for Catholic Tapes, Reverb Worship and Complacency Productions, and has performed with David Daniell, White Car, Sinkane, and Rhys Chatham. He performs solo under his own name, and received his MFA in sound from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the spring of 2010.

Bio / Info Hanni grew up in San Franscisco, California. The son of Palestinian and Filipino immigrants and the first American in his family, he became obsessed with classic Americana and pop culture of the 1950s and 60s. Influenced by pioneers of early rock and r&b (Johnny Burnette, Sam Cooke, Johnny Cash), El Khatib created a musical aesthetic to match his vision. The multi-instrumentalist serves as singer, songwriter & producer for his one-man band (live he is joined by a drummer) that is part blues, part garage rock, part soul, part folk & part doo whop. As the creative director for HUF and lifelong skater, El Khatib professes to a love for well-crafted objects: classsic cars, cans pomade and stiletto switchblades. This craftsmanship carries over into his music, where El Khatib is inspired and informed by the specificity of a guitar tone or the fuzziness of an amp sound . The second 7 inch vinyl single from his upcoming debut, "Build. Destroy. Rebuild" is an anthem that speaks to a current generation that has lived through abundant times, has recently lost it's footing, but has the optimism to persevere. Armed with a guitar and the lyrical proclamation of a preacher, El Khatib takes to the pulpit to declare the cycles of change that exist in society. The b-side "Loved One" is a rambling ode to a femme fatale who has that "vampire look tonight." Both tracks are a magnificent prelude to what the debut LP "Will The Guns Come Out" has in store.

While genre bending might be the name of the game in contemporary hardcore/metal, it can be argued that Cave In heralded, even created this trend long before the explosion of craptastic bands with chugging verses and faux-emotional choruses diluted the form to a point of meaningless static. The seamless blending of pummeling thrash, squalls of psychedelic melody, truly emotive vocalizations (of both the sung and screamed variety), and peerless arrangements make all the originals as well as the highly altered covers (Black Sabbath, The Cure, Bad Brains) in this compilation as vital now as they were then. Though some of these tracks were released in various forms around the time they were recorded, it is only now over a decade since their creation that the true enormity of their growth and subsequent impact on the next generation of bands can be fully appreciated.
