R E L E A S E D AT E : 2 / 1 5 / 1 1 Los Angeles rapper Awol One is rumored to be over one thousand years old and every single one of those years can be heard within the cracks and subtleties of his voice and words. One may call him a crude poet, a drunken rambler, or a voice for slackers but nobody can deny that he's maintained an uncompromising level of honesty and originality on the mic. As a solo act and a member of The Shape Shifters for over 10 years Awol One has collaborated with everyone from Xzibit and Cypress Hill to Aesop Rock and KRS-One. Back in the early 2000s when journalists didn't quite know what to make of strange indie hip hop, Spin magazine tried to pin him down as one of the

On "The Landmark" Awol's words embody the drunken grittiness of life as a touring musician. TRACK LISTING: Stockholm Syndrome is made up of an all-star cast. When Widespread Panic bass player Dave Schools and acclaimed singer/songwriter Jerry Joseph of the Jackmormons decided to collaborate, each initially thought the side project would be a cool, if temporary, change of pace. With one studio album released, a new studio album, Apollo, set for release on February 15, 2011, and multiple tours behind them, Stockholm Syndrome has transcended being just a side project. Together their “Dream Team” including Eric McFadden, Danny Louis, and drummer Wally Ingram, Stockholm Syndrome is a band. Ready to serve up its’ potent brew of provocative songs and thrilling, genre-transcending musicianship to worldwide audiences, there aren’t many bands with the ability to hit the ground running the way Stockholm Syndrome did. And now that they’re launched, they show no sign of slowing down soon.
HIGHLIGHTS: - AAM will be handling non-commercial, satellite, college, and limited AAA radio campaigns nationwide. - Catherine De Felice at Big Hassle Media will be handling national and regional publicity campaigns. - Toolshed Digital Media Marketing will be handling national online marketing campaign.

YOUNG GALAXY SHAPESHIFTING
R E L E A S E D AT E : F E B R U A R Y 1 5 , 2 0 1 1
F
or their third LP, Young Galaxy gave themselves away. SHAPESHIFTING'S 11 new songs, lithe and mesmerizing, were completed at home and then sent away, across the ocean, to one of the world's most acclaimed and secretive producers. For nine months, Dan Lissvik, half of the Swedish duo Studio, curved and refashioned these tracks; he made and remade them. In October, Lissvik sat down at his computer in Gothenburg. Young Galaxy sat down at their computer in Montreal. And across 3,500 miles, Skype-ing with a friend they have never met, Young Galaxy heard their third album for the first time. The finished album is glittering, seductive and utterly unlike anything Young Galaxy have done before. After the Polaris-nominated INVISIBLE REPUBLIC, Young Galaxy were dreaming transmutation, change. MECHELLE LOISof -transformation, REDEYE DISTRIBUTION They imagined the parallel universe version of their own band, a Young LOISM@REDEYEUSA.COM Galaxy that was never "epic", rarely "rock" - instead sexy, spacious, haunted by ghosts in silver, black and primary colours. Whereas they once wrote songs of pounding drums and cresting guitar, this time the four-piece sketched their love of New Order, the Knife and the Eurythmics.
PAPER BAG RECORDS
Lissvik, best known for his work with Studio and recent remixes for Fever Ray PAPERBAGRECORDS.COM and Bear In Heaven, has helped make SHAPESHIFTING a thing of cold reverb and hot drums, synth and coo, luck and loss. After a year that's seen them play with Arcade Fire, Stars, Twin Shadow and many more, Young Galaxy will bring these new songs on tour beginning in 2011.

OCCULT DETECTIVE CLUB LTD. EDITION VINYL with FREE MP3 DOWNLOAD STREET
DATE 2/15/11 With echoes of The Jam, Boys, Clash, Sham 69 and the passion and forward thinking of Billy Bragg, on their new album “Crimes”, Occult Detective Club is the sound of today with a nod to the past. Taking a cue from an increasingly active underground Texas music scene, they play a mix of first wave punk and new wave music with a focus on the catchy chorus, the thoughtful lyric, and a DIY mentality. Brain child of guitarist/singer/songwriter Alx Anguiano, the band’s bombastic sound combines pop melodies with clever lyrics, an irreverent attitude, and a point of view. The band has previously released their ten song debut LP “Tortures” in the of spring 2010 on Red Lounge Records, and fellow Texas gore-hounds Hex Dispensers covered their song “I’m A Ghost” on the B-side of one of their latest singles. Beside Alx, Occult Detective Club is Andrew Messer on guitars, Chris Reeves on drums and Tyler Shults on bass.

The next album forthcoming from Brainfeeder might, at first sight, appear to be something of a change in direction for the label but nothing could be further from the truth. Austin Peralta is a jazz musician. Not in the sense that he or people close to him bandy around the word “jazz” (or even worse, “jazzy”) in relation to his music. No, in the sense of years of practice and dedication to a particular artform. In the sense of having played with, amongst many others, the likes of Chick Corea, Hank Jones and Ron Carter. In the sense of having serious chops. Of playing the piano and composing like a true veteran. And in the sense of having done all that by the time he’s twenty. And that’s before you even get into his work as a session player for everyone from Erykah Badu to Shafiq Husayn, or the time he sat in with legendary LA big band, Horace Tapscott’s Pan Afrikan People’s Arkestra. But, as Flying Lotus explains, “this is a step in direction of where I want Brainfeeder to go. True musicianship as well as some interesting electronics.” Peralta, another LA native and son of legendary Z-Boy skater and, latterly, documentary film-maker Stacy Peralta, in many ways fits clearly into what Brainfeeder has always been about, a combination of questing futurism and an understanding of where you’re coming from. So while Peralta works alongside serious jazz musicians like Zane Musa (alto sax), Ben Wendel (tenor and soprano), Hamilton Price (bass) and Zach Harmon (drums), he also relies on longtime friend and associate Strangeloop for electronic manipulation throughout the set and ends the album with a scintillating collaboration with The Cinematic Orchestra and singer Heidi Vogel. “People would always tell me about this genius jazz pianist,” Flying Lotus recalls. “‘Hes like 17 or 18 and already sounds like Mccoy Tyner!’ I had to go and see what was up, so Dr Strangeloop introduced me, and I got to hear this amazing record.” And once he’d heard it there was only one outcome. It is, after all, the Brainfeeder way. “We had to put it out.”

The(featuring SkullDaniel Defekts Higgs) Peer Amid Thrill - 260
There are some bands who are content to make a record, play a few shows, and exist as a musical entity only when it’s time to make a new album, and then there are bands like The Skull Defekts who are the backbone of their musical communities. Hard at work on their numerous individual projects, constantly collaborating, releasing their own records on their own imprints, and touring incessantly, The Skull Defekts are Sweden’s answer to the States’ Sonic Youth and the Netherlands’ The Ex and one of the centerpieces of the Swedish experimental rock scene. Since their creation in 2005, The Skull Defekts have taken their base of classic rock with massive guitar riffing, and infused it with their interest in circular composition, drone, tribal music, Indian ragas, ‘60s minimalism, and experimental music from numerous ages. The band’s lineage is nearly unparalled amongst their peers with members having served time in Union Carbide Productions, Kid Commando, Alvars Orkester, Satan Power, Oceans of Silver & Blood, Anti Cimex, Cortex, Trapdoor Fucking Exit, 8 Days of Nothing, and countless others. Their collaborations are no less notable with members working with Pan Sonic and Mats Gustafsson. Peer Amid, their third “rock” album, finds the band augmenting their line-up with a new fifth member, Lungfish vocalist Daniel Higgs. Recorded at The Dustward Studio in Stockholm by Stefan Brainstrum, Peer Amid is their strongest effort to date. The arena-sized riffs of “No More Always” seep with an undeniable swagger, briefly catapulting the bands cyclic riffs into a frenzy. The intensity of “Gospel of the Skull” is driven by a tension created by the push and pull of Higgs vocals and mostly restrained guitar. Some may be familiar with this song as it was performed with a full symphony orchestra as part of the Gothenburg String Theory series that also featured the likes of Jose Gonzalez and El Perro Del Mar. The guitar lines of “Fragrant Nimbus” would make an apt soundtrack for a retro action movie on their own. When coupled with the foreboding words of Daniel Higgs, things rapidly move in another direction, fraying and shattering as his warnings become more explicit. The combination of Higgs’ lyrics and singular vocals are the perfect foil for The Skull Defekts myriad of talents. Peer Amid is a rock record, made by musicians who have always reveled in exploration, and made for a head that can accommodate the 360 degree turn. The cover is the work of Swedish artist Frederik Söderberg who has done several other Skull Defekts releases. According to the band, “Frederik understands our music in a very natural way, and we have a relationship where he is inspired by us and the other way around. The front cover of Peer Amid can be seen as an image of the sound of The Skull Defekts – the circle of sound.” The Skull Defekts are: Henrik Rylander (Drums // Electronics), Joachim Nordwall (Guitar // Vocals // Analog Synths), Jean-Louis Huhta (Percussion // Effects // Electronics), Daniel Fagerstroem (Guitar // Vocals // Electronics), and Daniel Higgs (Vocals // Various Instruments).

The Thermals are unstoppable! After an incredibly busy 2010 (6 tours, 4 singles and 1 LP), The Thermals are showing no signs of stopping or even slowing down. Kill Rock Stars is proud to announce the release of The Thermals' latest single, "Not Like Any Other Feeling". "Not Like Any Other Feeling" is the third single from The Thermals' awesome 5th LP, Personal Life. It's not like any other single The Thermals have ever released! Ok that's not entirely true. But this is marketing, people! Where the truth always takes a backseat to hyperbole. Kind of like a lot of relationships. The kind of relationships The Thermals explore in Personal Life, and especially "Not Like Any Other Feeling". Relationships in which (to quote the song), "You only exist to be replaced". "NLAOF" is filled with such grand, bleak statements. But damn it if they don't ring true. There can be no overstatements when you're in love, or falling out of it. "Not Like Any Other Feeling" is not unlike The Thermals' last amazing single, "Never Listen To Me" (in the musical sense.) The song is driven hard by the bass and drums, with the guitar taking a more melodic backseat. The vocals are loud and proud, intent on the listener understanding and absorbing every brilliant double negative. Pretty stoney mix, too! Thank you producer extraordinaire Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie, Tegan and Sara.)

powerdove CIS1035: POWERDOVE - BE MINE Annie Lewandowski is powerdove. Though she collaborates with other musicians, the resounding heart of powerdove will always be Lewandowski's sparse, haunting vocals and lilting parlor guitar. With influences ranging from Nico and Leonard Cohen to the drone sounds of Sunn O)), her music will warm the hearts of fans of experimental folk. Be Mine was recorded in the Mills College Concert Hall in San Francisco on February 14th, 2009, by Deerhoof's John Dieterich and the resulting twelve songs gracefully sway from ethereal, sun-dappled numbers to eerie, creaking ballads all the while communicating Lewandowski's words like a beam of light.

Theses songs, originally written to be performed solo, have been transformed in the studio with the primary help of Alex Vittum and Jason Hoopes. From the original delicate arrangements for voice and parlor guitar, a trio was born. With his sublime sensitivity as an upright bass player, Jason brought depth and gravity. And with his magical and vast array of percussive objects, Alex wove an ethereal thread from song to song. When you hear the warmth of Hoopes upright bass setting the tone of "Resting Place" or Vittum's sparse but well-placed percussion on the title track, you'll be enveloped with the magic that these three felt in the studio. "Be Mine" could easily be a 60's girl-group love song

GENRE : ROCK FILE UNDER: “A” Arbouretum The Gathering is the fourth album from the Baltimore band Arbouretum, led by singer, guitarist and lyricist Dave Heumann with bassist Corey Allender. Heumann’s lyrics employ elaborate and allegorical imagery, borrowing themes from Jung and Bowles to explore the depths of the mind. He and Allender trade long, expressive instrumental passages to explore the outer reaches of sonic space. On The Gathering, new drummer Buck Carey and the keyboards and percussion of Matthew Pierce open Arbouretum’s sound further, giving Heumann’s guitar explorations time and space to fully develop. The Gathering was to a large extent inspired by The Red Book by Carl Jung, or more specifically, Jung’s pursuit of the inner images that led to the book’s writing. Dave Heumann has long been a fan of experiences that surpass comprehension and describe the numinous. The narrative of “losing one’s way and finding it again” resonated deeply and it was in this context that the songs that comprise The Gathering came to be. With elaborate and very allegorical imagery, Heumann’s lyrics take the listener with him on an adventure, filled with conflict, redemption and revelation. The central metaphor of the track “The White Bird” refers directly to the book, while other songs are more generally inspired by Jung’s archetypal reservoir of experience, for example, the epic “Song of the Nile”, with its themes informed by Gnostic mythology. The concept and the band could not be better matched. The song structures that Arbouretum favor are open, never a simple verse chorus verse chorus, with several points at which Heumann’s guitar and Allender’s overdriven bass might come off the rails, tessellating and unfolding into long, expressive instrumental passages. (This is especially true in their live performance, an expansive and always unique show – a taper’s dream.) In order to further open things up, Heumann restructured the band’s instrumentation from what had been two guitars, bass, and drums, replacing one of the guitars with Matthew Pierce’s keyboards and percussion. The propulsive rhythms of Carey’s drums provide an underlying groundwork for Heumann’s guitar solos to weave in and out of, further taking advantage of the newly opened space. The Gathering and the band’s live performances manifest themselves according to time and place, and the band excels in situations where ideas have time to develop and reveal different facets of themselves. Whether it be in a live setting or in the lyrical vignettes that slowly unravel within the songs, their essence is rooted in the realms of ecstatic experience. The Gathering was recorded by Matt Boynton at New York’s Vacation Island Recording. Boynton, who had recorded most of Arbouretum’s 2007 release, Rites of Uncovering, was well-positioned to embrace the overall concept. He was able to capture vivid sonic details while employing extensive creative experimentation. The vocal on “Waxing Crescents” was recorded and then processed through the filter section of an early ARP synth, which was manually adjusted in real time while a medium-long delay was applied to an otherwise unprocessed copy. The effect is subtle and unsettling. On their version of “The Highwayman”, Pierce’s Rhodes was augmented by a variety of synths, specifically, a Juno, a Nord Lead, and an ARP organ-like patch processed by a tremolo pedal. The attention to detail in recording and in writing, in concert with the performance, result in the other-worldly experience of The Gathering. Andy Cook’s cover photos, like The Gathering itself, tell of ineffable mystery. It is a gathering of those enamored of wonder.

Rick Rizzo and Tara Key Double Star Thrill - 259 Limited LP $16.99 BOX LOT LP 40 Vinyl is non-returnable
*90377-ACFJBa
GENRE : ROCK FILE UNDER: “E” Eleventh Dream Day “A” Antietam Just ten years ago, Rick Rizzo and Tara Key put the finishing touches on their Thrill Jockey debut, Dark Edson Tiger, did a few live shows including All Tomorrow’s Parties at Camber Sands, and jubilantly declared the whole affair a rousing success, vowing to ride the tsunami swell of momentum into their next project. And now, in a Van Winkle like-daze, they are back, a new batch of instrumental collaborations ready to test the brave new decade. It would be easy to say that they simply wanted to wait out the debacle of poor government and unmitigated corporate greed, but truth be told, the seeds for Double Star were sown in early live New York City sessions with bassist Tim Harris not long after the Dark Edson dust had settled. These let-the-tape-roll sessions produced some of the guitar psychedelia that long-time observers might have expected from these two, including the epic tracks that now comprise “Noisy Attic” as well as the genesis of “Interruptive Organ”. Momentum, as any college basketball fan knows, is a fickle beast, and the astral duo lost it, although not unproductively, as they put their energies back into what “brung em” in the first place—Tara’s Antietam released their Victory Park and Opus Mixtum records while Rick’s Eleventh Dream Day put out the Prairie School Freakout reissue as well as Zeroes and Ones. In the meantime though, they always returned to the digital swap method — Chicago-NYC-NYC-Chicago that generated Dark Edson Tiger, now sending electronic files as opposed to bulky tapes. On Rizzo’s yearly visits to New York, Tara and Rick found time between tennis and tapas to lay down more loops and tracks, slowly building what would become Double Star. Josh Clark changed the landscape with his percussive sensibilities. The DNA for this album of course lies in their respective Kentucky punk rock roots, but a lot of living has been done between then and now. Double Star is a barrel-aged kind of record, sometimes inviting small fragrant sips, but sometimes asking you to knock one back and burn the throat a little. Worth waiting a decade for. Rick and Tara will convene for a handful of special Double Star performances in New York and Chicago in 2011 before parting ways, picking up their guitars, and hitting the road in support of Eleventh Dream Day’s new Riot Now! LP and Antietam’s forthcoming Tenth Life LP respectfully.

Master bluesmen are thin on the ground in South London, a landscape unsuited to the trappings and clichés of the genre. But it is down there, amidst the grey arterial routes, Victorian terraces and leafy parks that Duke Garwood makes his home. Garwood’s Dreamboatsafari sees him expanding on the spacious, dusty room blues found on previous albums Emerald Palace and The Sand That Falls. The genesis of this LP came when Garwood was on tour with Mark Lanegan – surely his spiritual cousin across the Atlantic waters. He had an inkling to release a “space cowboy record”, and this was realised at home recording sessions, with long-time collaborator Paul May on drums. Dreamboatsafari is a record with many moods, different textures in which to disappear and re ect. Garwood’s picking and quiet vocal murmurs act in a dialogue with an ever-expanding palette of sounds. Gengis is imbued with an air of quiet menace, Garwood’s vocal resembling that of Swans’ Michael Gira over hollow knocks, piano and drones. Tapestry On Mars, meanwhile, takes Garwood far into outer reaches of jazz... yet in between, the warm guitar of Summer Gold makes for perhaps the most affecting pop song that Garwood has yet written. Rank Panache adds funk, Taras Bulbous rhythms and pipes that start to explore the world beyond London, beyond the blues. It offers a glimpse of what is yet to come. With a joint LP with Mark Lanegan due next year, along with plans to work with the Master Musicians of Joujouka in Morrocco, Duke Garwood once again proves himself to be one of Britain’s boldest musical adventurers, taking this most traditional form somewhere entirely new. MORGAN ZARATE — Hookid EP
FORMAT - 12” LABEL - Hyperdub UPC - 5055300320803 CATALOG # - HDB044 LIST PRICE - $11.99 Morgan Zarate is best known for pushing R&B and hip hop into new spaces, taking influences from the US and UK and creating raw, emotional and psychedelic beats. On this first EP for Hyperdub, his production steps up in tempo, and the influence on his music of grime and dubstep shines through. He started on this path in early 2000 when he released the now classic 'Curvatia' as part of the influ-ential group Spacek. He has since produced their critically acclaimed sophomore album ‘Vintage Hi-Tech,’ and following on from that has worked with soul legends Raphael Saadiq and Amp Fiddler. He’s produced for Ghostface Killah, Dilla's favorites Frank n Dank, Musiq Soulchild, Eska, and has worked on campaigns for Nike and others. Most recently his production unit The Shining has been playlisted on Radio 1. 'Hookid' is the first 12'' from his forthcoming solo album, which is slated for 2011 release on Hyper-dub. The EP starts with ‘Hookid’ itself, a half time grime/ dubstep influenced track where swirling and bumping synth melodies try and find space in between congas and hard hand claps.
THE SINGING LOINS — Stuff
FORMAT - CD LABEL - Damaged Goods UPC - 5020422036529 CATALOG # - DAMGOOD365CD LIST PRICE - $15.99 The Singing Loins began having a laugh 20 years ago with two utterly live, mono, vinyl only LP releases on Billy Childish’s gorgeously Luddite record label, Hangman. Ever enduring outsiders, it’s likely they are now the world’s longest serving, truly amateur, original musical group. They’re certainly the fucking best. STUFF is the 11th offering of bare-knuckle folk from the Medway Delta. Their song writing is steeped in the British & European traditions of Punk, Folk, Music Hall, Character, Chorus, Cabaret, Melodrama & Buffoonery. Perhaps their very creative strength is derived from ordinary lives of day jobs, families and mortgages. Perversely un-ambitious, they remain untainted, uncorrupted, and above all else, still doing it for the reason they started doing it - Love. So, Ladies & Gentlemen of the press; don’t spoil things now. Whisper your astonishment and keep the release of this awesome recording firmly under your Fedoras.
THE WILDEBEESTS —Gnuggets
FORMAT - CD/LP LABEL - Dirty Water Club UPC - CD: 5023903261168 / LP: 5023903261052 CATALOG # - CD: DWC1047CD / 2LP: DWC1047LP LIST PRICE - CD :$15.99 / 2LP: $30.99 This double album features members of The Headcoats, Milkshakes, Thanes, Kaisers and Masonics - a veritable garage-rock supergroup - presenting their greatest hits and misses from 1994 to the present. The Wildebeests are something of a garage-rock supergroup, seeing as the group consists of John Gibbs (The Kaisers, Holly Golightly Band, The Masonics), Lenny Helsing (Thanes, Green Telescope) and, last but not least, Russ Wilkins (Pop Rivets, Milkshakes and Delmonas). These three old gits all cut their teeth playing raw beat music and generally causing a rumpus and have been doing so since before the likes of the Arctic Monkeys et al were born (which obviously means that they’re at least twice as good as any of those young whippernsappers!) and when their paths crossed they found that they had the same old cranky, rusty equip-ment plus some new(ish) shiny tunes that they had accumulated along the way.
TERRY EDWARDS —Clichés
FORMAT - CD LABEL - Sartorial UPC - 5060143300929 CATALOG # - FIT050CD LIST PRICE - CD: $15.99 Twelve covers in homage to Alex Chilton, from John Peel's signature tune to "Lulu's Back in Town" via Bach & an unhinged version of James Brown's "I'll Go Crazy" Terry Edwards, left-field session musician to the great & the good (including Robyn Hitchcock, Jerry Dammers, Siouxsie, The Duke Spirit and Madness about whom he has also had a book published), releases his first full album of solo material for 5 years. Although he’s well-known for cover versions, having previously released Jesus & Mary Chain songs as trumpetled instrumentals, The Fall in a ska style and Miles Davis tunes as speed-metal snapshots, Clichés is something of a departure. The album is respectfully dedicated to Alex Chilton who recorded a covers album with the same title in 1993. Using Chilton’s release as a blueprint, Edwards selected songs that had a personal resonance (e.g. John Peel’s signature tune, Pickin’ the Blues), wallowed in the beauty of heartache (You Won’t See Me, The Very Thought of You) or simply gave him a lust for life (the Mary Chain’s I Love Rock & Roll).
