Jim White
Where It Hits You
NATIONAL release date: CD/2xlp: 02.21.2012 Jim White has a habit of snatching meaning from thin air. His critically acclaimed debut album, The Mysterious Tale of How I Shouted WrongEyed Jesus (Luaka Bop), tapped into the zeitgeist of what would soon blossom into the lo-fi Americana movement. Jim reflects, "Back then (1997) there was maybe twenty of us doing it---Wilco, 16 Horsepower, of course Lucinda, Steve Earle andThe Jayhawks. Now, hell, there's a million lonesome geniuses out there, each one singing their heart out and sadder than the next." Where It HitsYou is Jim's chance to sing his heart out---and sing he does---no small feat, considering the heart that's singing was badly broken during the making of the record. As is often the case with cathartic upheaval, sometimes tribulation forces buried treasure to the surface. This holds true with Where It Hits You, as rich and diverse a record as Jim has ever produced. From the brooding dreamlike opener, “Chase The Dark Away,” to the wild eyed stomp of “Here We Go,” to the Beefheartesque “Infinite Mind,” to the Harvest-era Neil Young ringer “My Brother's Keeper,” Where It Hits You finds Jim in full musical stride, effortlessly blending genres and approaches in ways that sometimes boggle the mind. But as White's work has shown over the arc of his career, despite the experimental extremes he recklessly embraces, there's always a cohesive, singular identity that holds the divergent influences together. An eternally restless soul whose home base is Athens, GA, Jim White is also a visual artist, photographer, essayist, music producer, and composer for films and theater. Jim continues, "I just can't sit down. I wish I could, but there's so far to go. And somehow, some way, by hook or by crook, I'm gonna get there."

from renowned DJ and label-head Alexander Nut. Recent Brainfeeder-signing Lapalux kicks things off with a meticulous, sensuous re-work of “Prelude.” Banks fills “The Keeper” with spooky atmospherics. Cosmin TRG re-imagines “Kiara” as delicate heartbeat-house. Floating Points spaces “Eyesdown” out and adds to the groove, while ARP101 (better known as D&B producer Alix Perez) gives the tune an electronic re-lick and DELS adds heartfelt lyricism to the original. Later in the record, Machinedrum turns the same tune into hyperactive percussion and echoed loops of sound. FaltyDL shows a subtle, understated exercise in rhythm and atmosphere for his re-work of “All In Forms.” Mark Pritchard lets in the air on “Stay The Same,” to create delicate, dub-soul. Mike Slott fiddles with the pitching on “Stay The Same” to create robot emotion. Blue Daisy cuts up and plays with Andreya Trianaʼs vocals until “Stay The Same” really is “Not Quite The Same.” Duke Dumont finishes the record with an incredible use of ambience and orchestral build on his ʻreconstructionʼ of “Grains of Sand”. Bonobo himself makes two contributions. “Ghost Ship” (originally given away to promote the XX celebrations) reminds the world of Si Greenʼs obvious talents, combining as it does a classic Motown shuffle with lashings of wobbling bass. “Brace Brace” is, quite simply, beautiful, showcasing once again his grasp of instrumentation and tone.

Stuart Howard aka Lapalux has come up with something special for his first release with Cali’s finest, Brainfeeder. Having made his name with his cassette-only “Many Faces Out Of Focus” and acclaimed bootlegs and remixes he returns with a seven track EP of such poise and beauty, one listen is enough to know you’re onto something special. Lapalux bathes your brain in lush textures, surprising and explosive atmospheres set in unencountered, unearthly spaces, all somehow perfectly set against catchy rolling choruses informed by pop and commercial R&B. On the “When You’re Gone” EP he channels and refines his sound and shapes it into hazy, woozy emotion. Whether working with a singer like Py (on “Moments”), or deconstructing found samples and his own voice, Howard stretches, bends and warps sound to make soul – not plastic posturing but real emotion made of synthetic sound. 2012 is sure to be Lapalux’s break-through year. As well as his forthcoming releases for Brainfeeder, Howard is increasingly in demand as a remix artist (Fink, Mirrors, Bonobo, TEED Speech Debelle). XLR8R have just included 2 Lapalux tracks in their top 100 of the year. And if the raised cameraphones at his Plastic People show with Kutmah, Flying Lotus and Martyn are anything to go by, his live set is pretty impressive too...

kevn kinney & the golden palominos a good country mile Street Date: Feb 21, 2012 First new solo album from Drivin N Cryin’s Kevn Kinney since 2004! Produced by Anton Fier! Born from numerous jam sessions in a smoke filled, coffee stained New York basement, a good country mile (AGCM), is the latest collaboration between longtime associates and friends KEVN KINNEY (Drivin N Cryin) and ANTON FIER (The Golden Palominos). This ten track collection is a mix of new songs, a handful of reinterpretations of previously released KINNEY and Drivin N Cryin material, and a couple of treasured cover tunes. Featured musicians include Anton Fier, Chris Masterson, Jim Campilongo, Andy Hess, Tony Scherr, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Jon Cowherd, Eleanor Masterson, Leslie Mendelson and Lianne Smith. AGCM is KINNEY’S first solo album since 2004, when he released Sun Tangled Angel Revival, and the first release to deploy FIER’S Golden Palominos name since their 1996 album Dead Inside. It is a guitar heavy album, loaded with dirty riffs and powerful rhythms that would feel at home on an Allman Brothers record, a definite departure from KINNEY’S folk heavy solo work.
Marketing Points Kevn Kinney is a singer/songwriter and the bandleader of Drivin N Cryin. With multiple critically acclaimed albums under his belt, he has worked with such artists as Warren Haynes, Peter Buck (REM), John Popper and The Who.
This is not the first time KINNEY and FIER have worked together. Their first collaboration was on Drivn N Cryin’s 1987 classic album Whisper Tames The Lion which FIER produced as well as played drums. Over 20 years later, they reestablished their musical connection with FIER producing Drivin N Cryin’s 2009 album Whatever Happened To The Great American Bubble Factory which led to the pair jamming together and playing numerous informal live shows with a revolving cast of musicians. With prodding from friends, family and fans to record an album of the music they had been playing live, KINNEY and FIER handpicked a group of top musicians to help them complete that task. After emptying out their own pockets to fund the recording, KINNEY and FIER turned to their loyal fan base in search of capital to finish the project. Wanting to maintain the DIY aesthetic, an online Kickstarter fundraising campaign was established that raised the funds needed to complete a good country mile.
Anton Fier is a renowned producer/drummer. Since 1978 he has been involved in important and influential bands and musics such as The Feelies, The Lounge Lizards, Pere Ubu and The Bob Mould Band. He founded the Golden Palominos in 1982 as an outlet for his more personal visions and under this moniker has collaborated with artists as diverse as Michael Stipe, John Zorn, Richard Thompson, Bootsy Collins, Syd Straw and many others. He has also produced recordings by Victoria Williams, Joe Henry, Lori Carson, and telecaster visionary Jim Campilongo’s masterpiece, “Orange”.
If you like good rock music, then pick up a copy and listen to it loud.

“ It’s not a Drivin N Cryin album. It’s not a Folk album. Psychedelic Americana is the best way for me to describe it. It is truly spectacular.” - Eric Von Haessler, WNNX, Rock100.5 Atlanta, GA “...a good country mile is not what you would expect from DNC nor is it anything like the previous KK solo albums. Consisting of a collection of new songs, covers and past tunes revisited, this record is an all out rock n roll revival...” - Chris Martin, The Examiner

TREVOR JACKSON PRESENTS
PRESENTS
INDUSTRIAL / POST PUNK / EBM: CLASSICS & RARITIES 80 - 88 Strut present ‘Metal Dance’, a new compilation from one of the UK’s most respected DJ / producers, the man behind Playgroup and original founder of the legendary label Output Recordings, Trevor Jackson. Drawing on the specials that have peppered Jackson’s DJ sets for over a decade, ‘Metal Dance’ hones in on the more underground and danceable side of industrial, post-punk and EBM (Electronic Body Music), a phrase coined by Ralf Hütter of Kraftwerk but honed by later bands like DAF and Front 242 as socialist realist aesthetics were dragged onto the dancefloor during the mid-‘80s. Herein lie sounds that have heavily influenced today’s crop of artists and labels – from DFA and MGMT to Factory Floor and Hot Chip. Jackson cherry-picks classics and rarities from this era, including a new edit of Nitzer Ebb favourite ‘Control I’m Here’ (sampled on Quartz’ rave classic ‘Meltdown’), the cold dance of Analysis’ ‘Surface Tension’, Neon’s dark ‘Voices’, re-interpreting a Master C&J riff from the early days of Chicago house, and hard-hitting dubs from Pete Shelley, Alien Sex Fiend and more. Elsewhere on the album, Jackson brings in unexpected cold wave gems – a track from cult John Carpenter film ‘Escape From New York’ remixed by Klein & MBO’s Mario Boncaldo, a lost album track by avant garde Spanish artist Diseno Corbusier and a UK promo-only mix of Yello’s ‘You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess’. Following his award-winning graphic design work for Soulwax and fresh from projects with car giants Lexus and electro heroes Chromeo, Jackson draws on his considerable status as an artist and graphic designer with some stunning package graphics on ‘Metal Dance’. The album is released as a deluxe digipak (2CD), gatefold (2LP) and digital. KEY POINTS • first compilation by Trevor Jackson in over 8 years • timely release of a sound that has influenced many from DFA and MGMT to Hot Chip • many tracks appearing on CD and digital release for the first time • includes exclusive edits of tracks by Nitzer Ebb and Fini Tribe • features superb graphics from Trevor Jackson, who is now a major digital artist

Artist: Battles Title: Dross Glop 2
2.21.2012 WRP9328
“Creepy, surreal, hyper-real. It’s an art of implausibilities” —New York Times Battles proudly present the second in a series of highly anticipated remixes from their 2011 album Gloss Drop. Each release in the series comes exclusively on 12“ vinyl (not initially available on digital) and contains stunning, exclusive re-works of the original album art. The remixes are titled Dross Glop 1, 2, 3...etc. through the 4th and final 12”, which will be released exclusively for Record Store Day 2012. This 2nd release in the remix series sees Shabazz Palaces, Kode 9 and Alchemist recreate Battles kinetic tracks. Shabazz Palaces, whose 2011 album Black Up made them one of the breakout acts of the year, lend their voice and production to Battles “White Electric”. Alchemist, who re-works the Battles track that was performed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon - “Futura” - is the well-known producer behind Mobb Deep and Dilated Peoples. His latest work as Eminem’s DJ and current signing to Shady Records have kept him quite busy. There’s few styles as pervasive in contemporary music. Kode9, leader of the ahead-of-its-time Hyperdub has undeniable taste. As author, producer and early contributor to dubstep, his discovery of UK sensation Burial and The Spaceape have had limitless effect on the future. His remix of crowd-favorite “Africastle” has to be heard to be believed.

Artist: My Best Fiend Title: In Ghostlike Fading
2.21.2012
While the five members of My Best Fiend live in Brooklyn, the music they create resides somewhere else entirely: in a spacious, dreamlike world all its own. On their Warp Records debut, In Ghostlike Fading, their songs feel like reveries, mixing gorgeously atmospheric keyboards with grittier guitars and plaintive lead vocals. Almost hushed, folk-like verses build to ringing rock choruses, bolstered by layers of floaty vocal harmonies from various friends and guest stars, all of it treated to a generous turn of the reverb knob. Hallucinatory opening track, “Higher Palms,” achieves a kind of modern, Phil Spector-like spirit, a somewhat woozier Wall of Sound. Lead singer Frederick Coldwell’s lyrics teeter between decadence and penitence, compulsion and confession, offering portraits of characters that have sweated through a long dark night of the soul or two and –for the most of them.
WARPCD224/WARPLP224
My Best Fiend cut tracks for In Ghostlike Fading at Vacation Island in Williamsburg with co-producer and engineer Matt Boynton (Gang Gang Dance, MGMT, Beirut). They brought on help from other local artists, the formidable Shannon Funchess of Light Asylum, who sings on “ODVIP” and “Cracking Eggs,” and highly regarded solo artist-violist Anni Rossi. My Best Fiend’s hypnotic melodies have garnered comparisons to Spirtualized, and the enveloping wall of sound of Jesus and Mary Chain, even hinting at the sonic build and climax of Explosions in the Sky. But Coldwell, who can talk as knowledgeably about sixties cult folkie Fred Neil as contemporary electronic composer Bernhard Fleischmann, reaches back even further, citing as “a big touchstone” Neil Young’s haunting, bare-bones 1974 disc On The Beach.

Bright Moments Natives Kelly Pratt is Bright Moments. He’s the guy up at night by himself, stitching songs together in his New York City apartment all winter. Natives may be your first official introduction to the music of Bright Moments but if you have spent time with some of the most beloved indie albums of the last decade, you’ll quickly realize that you know him well. He is the multi-instrumentalist whose trumpet sparks across so many of Beirut’s songs and whose harmonizing vocals is a central component to the band’s robust live performances. He has also shouldered everything from flugelhorn to flute to bring Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible to life, and was part of the horn section that LCD Soundsystem used during its sunset days.

BUSDRIVER B E A U S $ E R O S FFINC034 CD/LP : BUSDRIVER BEAUS$EROS RELEASE DATE: FEBRUARY 21, 2012 Beaus$Eros, the seventh full-length from indie rap trailblazer Busdriver, forgoes the lightening-speed rhyming that defined his style in favor of a diverse, off-kilter brand of pop and post-hip-hop. Called “...as technically impressive as an MC can get” by Pitchfork and others, Busdriver has made his most personal and avantgarde work yet with Beaus$Eros. Focusing on a devastating break-up and personal failure, the album is vocals. In step with Busdriver's recent buttered in stirring melodies and complex buttered work with forward-thinking producers Flying Lotus, Modeselektor, Nosaj Thing and others, the production on Beaus$Eros takes root in beat music, lush IDM, and sythpop. Inarguably one of the premiere risk takers in modern indie rap, Busdriver has been a fixture in the scene for ten years, releasing compelling left-field rap albums on taste-maker labels like Mush, Big Dada, Alphapup, Polyvinyl and Anti-. Performing and collaborating regularly with acts likes The Roots, CocoRosie, Aesop Rock, The Glitch Mob, Deerhoof, the beatmakers of Low End Theory and more, his place in the network of left-leaning musicians is as unique as it’s ever been. Up-and-coming Belgian production wiz Loden doctors every moment on Beaus $Eros as the album’s only producer. Without ever physically meeting or speaking live, the two manage an electric synergy that usually comes from years of working together. Loden’s Hindenburg-sized beats push Busdriver’s croons and spat thoughts into difficult-to-label territory. Think Bjork’s Post filtered through the sensibility of Outkast’s The Love Below with outsider artist goals hidden in every measure. Beaus$Eros is the colorful sum of his wildly adaptive voice in music and proof that he still reigns over entire undiscovered worlds to which his loyal following is now invited. "Basically the fastest rapper on earth"-The Fader "...if you like your hip-hop weird, jagged and rapped like a wolverine, this will probably make you want to occupy something." - Los Angeles Times "[Loden] has laced Busdriver with genre-spanning production to create a record with touches of synth-pop, IDM, and, of course, left-field boom-bap." - Prefix Magazine

Not for nothing was DJ Kicks once named “the most important DJ mix series ever” by dance music bible Mixmag. In the 17 years since it started in 1995 with CJ Bolland’s scene-defining techno set, via landmark releases by Kruder & Dorfmeister, Smith & Mighty and Kemistry & Storm, it’s established a reputation for quality, forward-thinking mixes by dance music’s big names. That’s a statement that holds just as true for the last five years, which has seen UK synth poppers Hot Chip, New York retro-futurists The Juan MacLean and London dubstep icon Kode 9, amongst many others, add their weight to the franchise. A big part of DJ Kicks idea is the exclusive track on each album: every artist doing DJ Kicks has to write and include a piece of music that’s not available anywhere else. The second Exclusives album, follow-up to the first collection released in 2006, collates all 14 of those DJ Kicks-only moments from the last five years. The result is as wide ranging and eclectic as the series itself. Kieren ‘Four Tet’ Hebden turns in a stunning performance on Pockets, fusing clattering live percussion to sweeps of analogue synth and swirling electronics. My Piano sees Hot Chip on fine form, weaving the piano of the song title into one of their trademark synth pop grooves. Meanwhile The Juan MacLean conjure up a mammoth ten-minute slow-burn dancefloor bomb that starts with a bubbling Giorgio Moroder-style arpeggio and builds to a crescendo as glassy keys are piled on in multiple layers and Nancy Wang sings “You like it when it’s too much”. One of the strongest DJ Kicks mixes of recent times is that by London expatriate Scuba, who now lives in Berlin. His track M.A.R.S. bridges the two cities, taking the techno aesthetic of his adopted home and grafting it onto a breakbeat steeped in his dubstep roots. Then there’s Triangle Folds by techno wünderkind James Holden, a mind-bending digital flight of fancy beamed in from the outer rim of human consciousness. Oh, and Photek’s new exclusive track taken from his forthcoming mix, the 39th incidentally, which is due out next year. Surprisingly, perhaps, for an album compiled from sources with no connection other than DJ Kicks, which by its nature is a broad church, it hangs together satisfyingly. well. The common element? This is the sound of electronic music’s great and good at their very best. It’s what DJ Kicks is all about. Long may it continue.

FREEDOM OF SPEECH Street Date: 02/21/12 CD • BDCD193 • $14.99
Two years on from her Mercury-winning debut, “Speech Therapy,” having ridden a rollercoaster through life since, Speech Debelle is back, and she’s delivered a follow up that packs a powerful punch. If we see her first album as a confessional diary of trials and tribulations, then new album “Freedom of Speech” is outward-looking, high energy, powerful, engaged.
2LP • BD193 • $19.99
If the follow up has taken longer than people might have predicted then it’s been worth the wait. The 28 year old South London resident is in possession of the most exciting album of the coming year. “Freedom of Speech” sees her with a new look and a new direction, turning from introspection to face and engage with the world around her, spitting confident rhymes on the twin themes of revolution and love. Still brutally honest, yet a more mature and exciting record with lyrics to match, the new sound was shaped in collaboration with Kwes, a young producer who already boasts production for DELS, a record contract with Warp and a recent trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo as part of Damon Albarn’s DRC project for Oxfam.

The new album is a sonic declaration of independent control over rhyme and reason. Speech’s lyrics pack a powerful punch, punctuated with moments of arch perception and even hilarity. Her playfulness teamed with bouts of fiery attitude is a celebration of female power and identity, and as a result the album is self-referential without sinking into contrived introspection. Honest, uncompromising and ambitious, the unabashed lyrics come from a woman who sounds like she’s emerged from the emotional cocoon of her first album and come out fighting, more powerful than ever. This time round Speech wanted her music to have more depth and, with her production partner Kwes, delved into new territory, experimenting with sound and instrumentation. The result of this meeting of two personalities is a piece of work that is hard-edged at times, punctuated with synths, programmed drums overlaid onto live beats, crisp vocals - all details that give something different on every listen. If you thought she was good the first time round, well, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

PAUL WELLER
WAKE THE Nation NATION Wake UP Up The After an unparalleled career, characterized by constant musical experimentation, we should be used to Paul Weller’s relentless desire to chop and change his sound. But after the triumphant, Brit Award-winning success of 22 Dreams (his third solo number one in the UK), Wake Up the Nation sees one of rock’s most iconic songwriters expand and evolve once more. A departure stylistically from the more pastoral sounds of 22 Dreams, Wake Up the Nation is lean, mean and as uncompromisingly focused as its maker. It also brings Paul Weller full circle: twenty-eight years on from The Jam’s split, two tracks feature the former bassist Bruce Foxton. The album also sees contributions from My Bloody Valentine guitar alchemist Kevin Shields, ELO’s Bev Bevan and legendary session drummer Clem Cattini.

Peter Broderick
STREET DATE: 2/21/2012
http://www.itstartshear.com Following numerous film scores and collaborative projects, Peter Broderick has at last completed the long-awaited follow-up to HOME, his critically-acclaimed debut vocal album. Http://www.itstartshear.com is Broderick’s most ambitious recording to date, the product of three years time. The following are the artist’s own thoughts on the recording: How do you feel about music downloading? It is a common question addressed to musicians and one that I have been asked several times in interviews. My response has always been that it doesn't bother me. It is unavoidable. And in the best case someone who downloads an album and likes it might consider buying it at some point, or they might come to a concert and buy it directly from me at the merchandise table. What does bother me about downloading is how most of the time the listener doesn't have access to the artwork and/or text that comes along with a physical copy. Perhaps for many people this doesn't even matter, but personally I have always felt a great satisfaction from having an image and some words by the artist to accompany and enhance the sounds. To take in the full picture as the artist intended, which in my mind includes all the liner notes and artwork as well as the music . So, Http://www.itstartshear.com was designed simply to be a place where all listeners, no matter what format they obtain the music in, can easily access all the lyrics and notes and visuals which are meant go along with the songs. And as a title, Http://www.itstartshear.com serves the music well by automatically becoming a link any time the album is written about. A link to the place where people can learn all about the album, directly from the source. A link that is the album. Or at least a link that will be the album, once it comes out, February 21, 2012. For those who read this and hear the music before that date, I am happy to tell you that Http://www.itstartshear.com is the result of nearly three years of studio work, and is my first album created without any self-made restrictions. Whereas on albums past I set out to work strictly with certain sets of instruments, this one includes anything and everything I could get my hands on and which seemed appropriate for the song. Produced by Nils Frahm at his Durton Studio in Berlin, it is my first project on which the sonic timbre of the songs was treated equally as important as the music itself. I have been in awe of the sound on the many records coming out of Nils' studio over the last couple years, so I thank him deeply for helping me to explore a richer, wider sonic landscape.
HIGHLIGHTS • Produced by Nils Frahm. • His long-awaited 2nd vocal recording • Fine custom packaging TRACK LIST
1. I Am Piano 2. A Tribute To Our Letter Writing Days 3. Blue 4. It Starts Hear 5. Asleep 6. Colin 7. Bad Words 8. With The Notes On Fire 9. Trespassing 10. Everything I Know
Furthermore, many of the songs on this album were made in dedication to someone or something in particular. There is a recollection of a romantic letter exchange from several years ago (A Tribute To Our Letter Writing Days), a song written by my father when he was 19, which I discovered on an old cassette tape in late 2008 (Blue), a remembrance of a friend who passed away in a kayaking accident, for which I enlisted anyone and everyone to submit recordings by sharing a commemorative text over the internet (Asleep), a celebration of a little-known artist who has inspired me greatly (Colin), and a dedication to a bird whose life I stole while driving alone in the countryside (Trespassing), among others.

Pontiak Echo Ono Thrill - 293
For their new album Echo Ono the three brothers who make up Pontiak conceived of recording an expressionistic record. Something unlike anything they had tried before. They imagined it as a color project, painted through music, favoring the traditional form of the song to explore texture and color. The album was an ambitious undertaking and would require deconstructing and then rebuilding their studio in order to be able to record it the way they envisioned it. The first step was to find a new mixing board. They found a Soundcraft 6000 24 track analog mixing board for sale on an exotic animal compound in Arkansas. To their surprise it was tucked away in a studio next to giant Moog synthesizers and had been used to record Herbie Hancock. Board in hand, they returned home and began rebuilding their studio to capture both the band’s heavier sound and the melodic nuances they’re becoming known for. They focused on the acoustic properties of the space, paying great attention to the subtly of the room. After a detour to the Austin Psych Fest that involved tornadoes and chainsaws, recording began immediately. Recorded at their farm studio in the heart of Virginia, Van, Lain, and Jennings rotated between their respective instruments and engineering duties. They treated the recording equipment as another instrument, placing just as much importance on the sound leaving the amps and drum skins as the sound written on the tape. If it wasn’t as colorful and tangible throughout the entire songwriting process it was unacceptable. While previous Pontiak albums had been approached more loosely as snapshots of a specific time, focusing on the current songs, and their current energy, Echo Ono is different. It was conceived of as an album. Instead of recording hours and hours of songs and then fitting the best pieces together, careful attention was paid to the narrative of the album and the structure of the songs as well as how each directed that narrative. What was left to chance was what would happen when the band pushed these structures to the extreme in performance and volume. No distortion or overdrive pedals were used. If an amp started to act unpredictably, they turned it up. If a speaker started rattling, they pushed it. Music so loud it produces physical vibrations in your chest. Echo Ono feels like a complete whole, as well as their most concise and direct album to date. GENRE : EXPERIMENTAL/POP FILE UNDER: “W” Wong, Dustin Dreams Say, View, Create, Shadow Leads is the second solo album from Dustin Wong following his 2010 double album+DVD release Infinite Love (Thrill 251, Oct 2010). Dustin was a founding member and guitarist of the Baltimore groups Ponytail and Ecstatic Sunshine and with his solo work has been taking listeners on a trip through an intricately colorful wonderland that he creates with only his guitar and a bank of effects pedals. Dreams Say, View, Create, Shadow Leads is a departure from Dustin’s previous methods as it is more closely a distillation of his live show into recorded form. The pieces are so intricate and detailed that we’ve asked Dustin to explain his process and he happily obliges us: “I see all these pedals as a kind of textile factory. The sheets and colors are determined then the patterns are laid on top, one layer after another until it becomes a fabric mille feuille. Once that cake looks done it gets replicated again through another delay pedal. I can keep building these sounds on top each other and decide whether I want to take half of the cakes slices or not, if i do, I can gaze at the symmetrical void of what I have taken. I changed the recording process for Dreams Say, View, Create, Shadow Leads from the process used for Infinite Love. In Infinite Love I recorded every layer as a separate track dividing them up throughout the stereo-field, but in Dreams Say… it was all mostly recorded live with a few overdubs moving around in the stereo-field. The presentation of songs are also different, Infinite Love was presented as a whole, and in Dreams Say… I decided to have titles for each song or idea. In a way the physical documentation and the presentation of the idea got switched. Just like choosing how to see a light through a prism. Whether to see the fragmented light into the prism and out to the single ray of light or the other way around.” Praise for Dustin Wong : “Guitar whiz kid Dustin Wong cut his teeth with busy riffs in bands like Ponytail and Ecstatic Sunshine before breaking out as a solo artist and topping our list of great records you may have missed with 2010’s Infinite Love. Thankfully, that wasn’t the last we’ll hear from Wong’s fretwork, as the guitarist has revealed plans for a new album.” - Exclaim “Guitarist Dustin Wong and his hands (and feet) are among the young musicians breathing new life into the instrument... Wong spins hallucinatory mini-symphonies that transcend the guitar’s seemingly limited palette.” - East Village Radio Also available from Dustin Wong : Infinite Love 2xCD+DVD/2xLP+DVD (Thrill 251)

To follow up the release of their critically acclaimed Thrill Jockey debut West, Wooden Shjips return with a limited 12”EP featuring three exclusive cuts and remixes from Andrew Weatherall, Sonic Boom (Pete Kember of Spacemen 3), and Kandodo (Simon Price of The Heads). Limited to only 2,500 copies worldwide this will not last long! Andrew Weatherall, long time DJ, producer and remixer who has worked with the likes of Primal Scream, New Order, My Bloody Valentine, and Björk, contributed his trademark style to a stretched out version of the West track “Crossing”. Pete Kember, also known as Sonic Boom of Spacemen 3/Spectrum fame, submitted the “Wiking Stew (aka Red Krayola-ing)” remix. When Pete was called in to help master West he was inspired by the work and made this mash up of Wooden Shjips tracks his own. The Red Krayola-ing subtitle is a reference to the legendary band that Pete saw as a sort of homage to that element of their sound. Last but not least is the track “Ursus Maritimus (Last Bear’s Lament)”, which ended up being a very loose collaboration with Kandodo (otherwise known as Simon Price from The Heads). This track began as something that Ripley had been working on as a sort of demo, but after hearing some early Kandodo recordings on a long road trip, decided it might be cool to see what Simon could do to flesh it out. Being a long time friend of the band, he agreed and added all the additional instrumentation.

GENRE : POP/ROCK FILE UNDER: “F” Friedberger, Matthew “F” Fiery Furnaces, The
Release Date: January 24, 2012 NO EXPORT TRACK LISTING:
Arrested On Charges Of Unemployment is the sixth and final album released in Matthew Friedberger’s six album series Solos. Arrested On Charges Of Unemployment was made with a double bass and Matt’s vocals. Arrested On Charges Of Unemployment is set in an appropriately povertystricken manner. As regards its composition, arrangement, recording and performance, in other words, the story is set as poorly as possible. This involves the record involve only that most pathetic of string instruments. An unwieldy, typical timorous beastie sort of double bass was brought up from a damp and dusty basement, near a train station which goes nowhere, only to endless rain and wind, carried on one’s back through the drizzle and the litter, all the buildings grey, all the shops closed, chains rattled by the gusts going, up many many flights of stairs-- and then, and there. There it was played and sung along to, in an as economical manner as one could manage. In other words, in as poorly a fashion as possible. Sigh. The story set in such a way, or suchaway, involves universal themes, as some people say, excuse the expression. A young woman is depicted, wanting what young woman all over the world want. For example. The freedom to go somewhere else, to go to another country. The freedom to choose one’s profession. The freedom to be promiscuous, if they wish and on a whim, and perhaps even simultaneously promiscuous, with admiringly deferential, young, active, men, in unthreatening uniforms. The freedom to have a pet (or ever-dependent non-verbal best friend). The freedom to play the double bass, and sometimes do so as part of a ruse to steal confidential information. The liberty to join a union or professional organization (though in this case, an ex-professional organization). The freedom to, just maybe and perhaps this is pushing it, not share a room with a blogger from Ontario with an eating disorder. The freedom to not be, sometimes charmingly, exploited by a Greek restauranteur. The freedom to perhaps abandon one’s children. And most important, most beguiling of all, the freedom, though that is certainly not the right word, to have one’s abject unemployment turned, deus ex machina, into fulfilling retirement. Preferably in a beautiful and lively location very close to the Mediterranean. In other words, then, Arrested On Charges Of Unemployment is a typical bit of let’s-not-be-as-obvious-as-possible-please, thorough-going, dramatic-i.e. rock--music. As one simply must attempt in these, if not terrible times, certainly, often dispiriting moments.

The Surveillance was the first record recorded and mixed entirely by the band. At the time their home studio, the Bridge, had taken several months to build. The Surveillance was to take an equal amount of time as the band labored hard to give the recording what they call “a dangerous quality”. What is dangerous to Trans Am? It is no noise reduction, no digital tape compression, and no computer aided editing. Instead they relied on live performances, hours of hard work, hands-on mixing, careful microphone placement, and, to quote the band, “faith in their experimental vision.” They built the Bridge to allow themselves this freedom, and they ran with it. The results are raw, sparse electronic breaks mixed with diesel-powered rock and roll. Trans Am put it in more masculine terms—”balls-to-the-wall-rockers”, which perhaps better capture not only the sound but the intent.

2001 : Following the massive success of their 1998 album TNT, Tortoise delivered their fourth album Standards. In and out of print over the past decade we are happy to finally give everyone what they have been asking for - Standards on vinyl again! Pressed on high quality virgin vinyl with the original heavy duty artworked inner sleeve and custom silk-screened PVC outer bag - this repress also includes a free download coupon. The tunes on Standards are direct and immediate, yet they maintain the exploratory edge that has always characterized the group’s output. The fusion of instrumental sounds (electric, acoustic, and synthesized) is subtle and subversive. Similarly, the group’s fluency within the studio environment gives the finished work a quality that alternates between artifice and reality. Whilst TNT was constructed in the studio using segments recorded, improvised or altered electronically, the Standards sessions began after a period of rehearsal and composition. The contrast, simply stated, is that the studio was used extensively as a compositional tool for TNT, whereas with Standards it was used predominantly as tool to realize and enhance the existing new compositions. The studio does not impose itself on the recording to the same degree we witnessed on TNT, and the resulting record is in many ways reminiscent of their unadorned self-titled debut.

DESCRIPTION: Science fiction has evolved out of a human desire to know the hidden possibilities of our continued existence moving into the dimly lit territories of the future. Using what they know of our history as a spring board for our speculation, and by examining the predictive signs of current environment, visionary writers have cast light on our possible future whereabouts, and in the process given form and direction to that course through a creative process of divination. In some ways, Pyramids self titled debut has accomplished the same feat in the realm of musical prognostication. While the album was certainly built on a knowledge of past musical forms, the combination of that knowledge with an uncanny ability to twist old energies into entirely new shapes, they've created a truly predictive and compelling sculpture of sound and aural color. Now, several years since its initial release, Pyramids first collection of songs resounds like a communique from a far off galaxy. It could be the music made by Martian interpreters who somehow intercepted and reconfigured the decaying din emanating from the charred surface of Planet Earth. The resultant impressions sound like cut up feverdream tape loops containing snippets of Xasthur, Tangerine Dream and Mazzy Star layered over, under and through each other. The aural pictures are at once terrifying and soothing, familiar and wholly alien. What seems like it shouldn't does in fact work: black metal blasting stitched together with patches of gauzy melody and angelic warbling. It's one of the most enveloping and simultaneously disorienting documents to have emerged from the hazy outer territories of the heavy music underground in years. Despite the numerous musical mutations that have sprung up around it since its initial release, Pyramids debut still sounds far beyond the horizons of anything concocted by modern musical scientists. Perhaps through a process of reversed time flow, Pyramids have brought the sounds of the future into our present moment, speculative fiction in aural form. It's hard to say whether we should be reassured or terrified by their findings, but it's safe to say adventurous listeners can't afford to ignore prophetic visions such as these. “SELLING POINTS”: - The LP includes a digital download code featuring remixes/reinterpretations by Jesu, James Plotkin, Blut Aus Nord and many others. Fire are to reissue Pulp's 1987 album 'Freaks' as part of the Fire Embers reissue series with a special 2 disc release, with the second bonus disc packed with singles and b-sides from the Freaks era. Pulp had changed significantly since their debut 'It'. By this time every member bar Jarvis had moved on but the addition of Russell Senior proved to be a pivotal turning point for the band. No longer did Pulp sound pastoral, easy-natured; now they were darkly romantic, brooding, noisy and a little bit Gothic, in the way young folk who brush their hair a certain way are always a little bit Gothic. Pulp were out-oftune with the times: but the times didn't satisfy Pulp. The album is quite marvellous. Most of these songs stand the distance of time: it was here, possibly even more than 1992's Separations, that Pulp started coming into their own as a band with a fullyrealised aesthetic. The first disc is the original album, unaltered and in its entirety. The second is a bonus disc comprising of tracks from the two big non-album singles from the same era, 'Little Girl (With Blue Eyes)' and 'Dogs are Everywhere'. Two further b-sides 'Tunnel' and 'Manon' complete the second disc for the definitive 'Freaks' period release. Pulp's 'It' and 'Separations' will be reissued at the same time for the complete Pulp on Fire collection. Track Listing : DISC 1 : 1. Fairground 2. I Want You 3. Being Followed Home 4. Pulp’s debut and one of their most honest recordings - capturing a band at the beginning of their startling career. ‘It’ is a gentle, mainly acoustic album that hints at the musical directions Pulp would later pursue. The album touches on the majestic, theatrical ballads of Scott Walker, as well as the stark, folky song poems of Leonard Cohen. Certainly an album by a young band trying to pinpoint their direction, and absorbing many an influence from all around, ‘It’ has aged beautifully into a charming collection. Fire are to reissue Pulp’s 1983 debut album ‘It’ as part of the Fire Embers reissue series with bonus material. Re-mastered and repackaged. New liner notes by Everett True. Featuring 4 Bonus tracks including single version of ‘My Lighthouse’ and alternative mix of ‘Blue Girls’, the previously unreleased ‘Sink Or Swim’ and ‘Please Don’t Worry’ from Pulp’s John Peel session in 1981. Fire are to reissue Pulp’s 1992 album ‘Separations’ as part of the Fire Embers reissue series with unreleased bonus material. Their third and last album on Fire, Pulp had already transformed from their debut ‘It’ through the dark electronic phase of Freaks and were garnering significant momentum. Now critically acclaimed and with a live reputation matched by only a few, most of the songs on Separations sound fully-realised in that undeniably Pulp manner that was soon to be experienced everywhere. And, for the first time, there was an inescapable disco pulse. This is the transition album where Pulp, caught between a doomed romantic outsider past and an acid-bright future, made an album that brilliantly reflects both. Remastered and repackaged. Liner notes by Everett True. Featuring 4 bonus tracks ‘Death Goes To The Disco’ and ‘Is This House’, as well as an extended version of the single ‘Countdown’ and the previously unreleased ‘Death Comes To Town’. Separations spawned two of Pulps most successful singles to date in ‘Countdown and ‘My Legendary Girlfriend’ with the latter being placed on many top singles of 1991 lists by major music publications. Pulp’s ‘It’ and ‘Freaks’ will be reissued at the same time for the complete Pulp on Fire collection. Track Listing : 1. Love Is Blind 2. Don't You Want Me Anymore? 3. She's Dead 4. Separations 5. New version with updated packaging / digipack format. Spacemen 3's second album is a remarkable departure from the band's 1986 debut, SOUND OF CONFUSION. Reduced to a trio (guitarists / keyboardists Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember, Jason "Spaceman" Pierce, and bassist Pete Bassman) following the departure of the first album's drummer, Spacemen 3 makes an asset out of the newfound lack of percussion, giving THE PERFECT PRESCRIPTION a considerably less rock-oriented sound with much more open space in its varied, subtle arrangements. Track Listing : 1. Take Me To The Other Side 2. Walkin’ With Jesus 3. Ode To Street Hassle 4. Ecstasy 5. Feel So Good 6. Things’ll Never Be The Same 7. Come Down Easy 8. Call The Doctor 9. Soul 4 10. New version with updated packaging / digipack format. Recorded in Amsterdam in 1988, the live Performance documents a set from the Perfect Prescription tour; the emphasis here is on the group's loud, noisy origins -- only the closing "Feel So Good" hints at the more subdued atmospheres and textures which emerged as Spacemen 3's primary focus as they approached Playing With Fire. Among the highlights: "Take Me to the Other Side," "Walkin' With Jesus" and "Come Together." New digipack. Track Listing : 1. Mary-Anne 2. Come Together 3. Things’ll Never Be The Same 4. Volker Strifler
STREET DATE: 2/21/12
LET THE MUSIC RISE California-based International artist Volker Strifler stretches the blues envelope to all points of the compass...
Long time frontman for the Ford Blues Band and sideman to Robben Ford, Volker Strifler shows off his talents as a song writer, guitar player, singer and producer on his latest CD, LET THE MUSIC RISE. The music is heavily infused with Volker’s unique style of Blues roots, taking the listener to the outer limits of the genre while combining the traditional with more modern, diverse musical styles. The traditional instrumentation of guitar, bass, keyboards and drums are augmented by a horn section, mandolin riffs, tuba and “the sounds of pots and pans.” Attempting to slot him into a single genre is futile! Influenced by original blues icons like Robert Johnson and Houndog Taylor to Muddy Waters, Peter Green, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Robben Ford;, Volker Strifler has forged a style of his own. “Throughout my career, Blues music has been my foundation, but I draw from all the music I grew up listening to and whatever else passes by on a day to day basis.” The Great Escape with its spaghetti western guitar licks laid down on top of a rock blues foundation as well as the groove oriented African and Cuban rhythms of Redemption demonstrate Strifler’s understated approach to the genre that makes him such a revelation. However, Going to Brownsville, his adaptation of Sleepy John Estes’ 1929 song The Girl I Love Got Great Long Curly Hair, and Fleetwood Mac’s Jigsaw Puzzle Blues will certainly satisfy the most demanding of blues fans.

Volker Strifler is a stunningly unique and creative guitarist with an innate understanding of the language of music. His songwriting and arrangements skillfully communicate that Blues is feeling more than a style, while his compelling, soul-saturated voice conveys the stories in his songs with a sensitivity that connects his audience with the hardships, joys and sorrows of life’s shared experiences. With LET THE MUSIC RISE Strifler takes a risk with musical freedom that pushes his musicianship in an innovative direction; drawing from a broad palate of musical color to experiment with the Blues - keeping it fresh. “My goal is to give the listener a sense of hearing something they won’t hear anywhere else.”
“Volker Strifler is a beautiful singer and a powerful guitarist.” — Robben Ford “Man that guy can really play his box!” — Lowell Fulson VIZZTONE LABEL GROUP WWW.VIZZTONE.COM CONTACT: Richard Rosenblatt richard@vizztone.com 617 250-0828

As record store clerks in Chapel Hill NC, Heather McEntire (of post-punk veterans Bellafea) and Jenks Miller (of heavy-psych/ metal outfit Horseback) spent their evenings creating Mount Moriah as an outlet for their mutual interest in classic American folk and rock music. Born in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains, McEntire weaves narratives into spectral tapestries imbued with the complex majesty of the South and its deep-seeded spirituality. With nods to both classic folk-rock (Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Carole King, Emmylou Harris) and their contemporaries (Gillian Welch, My Morning Jacket, Fleet Foxes) Mount Moriah challenges existing traditional folk music forms with arrangements born from Miller's interest in minimalism and sound texture. The 2010 EP, The Letting Go, highlighted the band’s thematic range, moving from delicate acoustic narratives to a dark, fuzzed-out, soulful stomper in just three tracks. Mount Moriah’s long-awaited, self-titled debut -- featuring guest instrumentation by members of St. Vincent, Megafaun, Gayngs, Bowerbirds and many other North Carolina-based musicians -- is cut from the same cloth, offering a far-reaching and non-traditional take on classic folk themes like devotion, tribulation, redemption, and an indelible sense of place. “[Heather McEntire] is the god child of Dolly Parton, Bjork, Sinead, and someone I can't put my finger on - very special. The songwriting is just as good, an unusual thing; [Mount Moriah] is gifted in every way. I don't want to categorize this music because it very much defies it… so many layers…[it’s] transporting.” - Amy Ray, Indigo Girls "Mount Moriah's two-guitar ache is spare and arid, guitar tones floating thick and slow like the smell of bog and honeysuckle in humid Southern air. Heather McEntire, also of Bellafea, leads the band, her voice a sharp blade with a soft handle." - Grayson Currin, The Independent "I think you don't see a stage presence like Heather McEntire's more than a few times in your life. She's unbelievable." - John Darnielle, The Mountain Goats “At what point are you obsessed with a record? Is it when you only want to listen to it, and only it, for an entire week? There is something that only Heather's voice can do for me.” - Justin Vernon, Bon Iver
