Now, Now: Threads Coming on Trans- Records, March 6, 2012
Trans- Records, the new label launched by Death Cab for Cutie guitarist/producer Chris Walla, proudly debuts with the release of the sophomore full-length album Threads from Minneapolis based Now, Now on March 6th 2012. Produced by Howard Redekopp (Tegan and Sara, An Horse, New Pornographers), Threads is a sprawling sonic endeavor of vulnerable vocals giving way to oceans of sound retaining definition via deftly layered guitar parts augmented by lingering synths alternating between background and center stage.
TRACKLIST 1. The Pull 2. Prehistoric 3. Lucie, Too 4. Dead Oaks 5. Oh. Hi. 6. But I Do 7. Separate Rooms 8. Thread 9. Wolf 10. School Friends 11. Colony 12. Magnet
A long-time fan, Walla came to each of Now, Now’s shows at SXSW 2011, helping them lug gear and even talking a police officer out of giving them a parking ticket. With mutual admiration all around, it was natural for Now, Now to sign to Walla's label, paving the way for the release of Threads. "In working with Chris and his label," explains guitarist Jessica Abbott, "we've been given a lot of freedom to make sure we're happy with the music."

YELLOW OSTRICH STRANGE LAND
bark124 CD / LP+MP3
STREET DATE: MARCH 6, 2012 “At some point you wonder if maybe the grass is greener, and then you go somewhere else and you realize it's not that much greener - so what do you hope for now?” So says Yellow Ostrich's singer-guitarist Alex Schaaf, summing up the themes of his band's powerful new album, Strange Land. Schaaf knows what he's talking about - he moved to New York from Wisconsin in 2010, got a bunch of acclaim for the Yellow Ostrich album The Mistress, signed to Barsuk and toured the U.S. several times with his hot new band: multi-instrumentalist Jon Natchez and drummer Michael Tapper. Still, wherever you go, there you are, and that's what Strange Land is all about.
TRACKLISTING 1. Elephant King 2. Daughter 3. Marathon Runner 4. I Got No Time for You 5. Stay at Home 6. I Want Yr Love 7. The Shakedown 8. Wear Suits 9. Up in the Mountains 10. When All is Dead
Strange Land retains Schaaf's sweet, boyish voice and bracingly open-hearted songwriting, but adds a hard-won urban edge: brawny bass and busy, prominent drums, triumphal horns, and plenty of raw, overdriven guitar. As the album transitions from wistful but supercharged pop to new musical realms, it's as if you're hearing the transition the band itself made, from self-contained solo unit to a collaborative trio of outstanding musicians. Schaaf has a degree in music, and there's plenty of his gorgeous stacked harmonies here, but this time Natchez's horns occasionally take on that role, and it's all animated by Tapper's hip-shaking syncopations.

Yellow Ostrich did several US tours in 2011, opening for bands like the Antlers and Ra Ra Riot. It was a pivotal experience. “I found myself tending to want to flex a little bit, get bigger, so people wouldn't talk over our whole set,” Tapper says. That - and the heavy airplay the Velvet Underground, Wire, and Crazy Horse-era Neil Young got in the tour van - had a big impact on the new music they made, with its dramatic dynamic shifts and listen-to-me-now passion. “We took the energy from those performances,” says Natchez, “and allowed the live experience to direct the recording, as opposed to vice versa.” It took that kind of power and urgency to unleash the emotional core of the songs on Strange Land. “They're about all those pent-up feelings of anticipation you carry throughout your life,” says Schaaf, “and what happens to those feelings when imagination becomes reality, and you see things maybe quite aren't as magical and easy as you thought they'd be. When your future becomes your present, an explosion happens; that's where a lot of this came from.”

• Strange Land is the product of Alex Schaaf, six days in a little studio outside of Woodstock, NY, and a hot new band featuring Jon Natchez and Michael Tapper, and was self-produced with engineer Beau Sorenson (Death Cab for Cutie, Sparklehorse). • Yellow Ostrich spent the last half of 2011 opening shows for the likes of The Antlers, Delicate Steve and Ra Ra Riot to impressive results ( = venue sales!). New tour dates are available at www.yellowostrich.com and www.barsuk.com. • Big Hassle has signed on to handle the press while Distiller will be getting the music played on the radio. • Yellow Ostrich will most likely be performing in a venue near you soon. Ask for tickets. You won’t be disappointed. • Posters, in-store play copies and web assets available from your friends at Flea Marketing or your favorite Redeye sales rep.

Scud Mountain Boys
Release Date March 6, 2012
The Early Year
The Early Year contains the earliest tracks from Joe Pernice’s pre-Pernice Brothers band Originally released on Sub Pop in 1997 The Scud Mountain Boys began as the Scuds in western Massachusetts in 1991. Back then the group played loud rock ‘n’ roll in local clubs and had an appreciable number of fans who would frequent their live shows. But after those shows ended, the band would retreat to Bruce’s kitchen to unwind. There, late at night, they would break out their old country favorites, playing the songs they thought too quiet and too slow for live performances. The band found that these were the songs they really lived to play, so they decided to make a change. Adding “mountain boys” to their name, the re-christened Scud Mountain Boys played their first show in 1993. In keeping with their simplified approach, the Scud Mountain Boys preferred to record in the same kitchen that spawned their new direction. They had tried recording in a small studio but found it alienating. A four-track recorder captured the sounds for 12 original songs and three covers of songs originally performed by such diverse sources as Jimmy Webb (“Wichita Lineman”), Olivia Newton-John (“Please, Mister Please”), and Cher (“Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves”). Originally sold as the Pine Box cassette, the tracks were later released on vinyl by the indie-rock label Chunk Records in 1995. Later in 1995 the Scud Mountain Boys recorded another set of tracks which became Dance the Night Away on Chunk. Including more four-track kitchen recordings, as well as others made a 24-track studio, the CD-only release featured drums on a few songs, another Jimmy Webb cover (“Where’s the Playground Susie”) and similar lyrical themes. As with the first record, soft sounds mask dark thoughts, and simple words are deceptively suggestive. As word of these two powerful records spread beyond Massachusetts, a number of record labels became interested in the band. They signed with Seattle’s Sub Pop Records, and set about recording Massachusetts, a 14-song album with a number of more upbeat songs with drums and electric guitar. Released in April of 1996, Massachusetts unleashed the floodgates of critical acclaim that had eluded its less-known predecessors. The New Musical Express rated the record a nine (out of ten) and opined, “Joe Pernice has the golden voice of the damaged, regret oozing from every word like wounded honey… rendering glorious the utter inevitability of failure…. The best broken love and bad drug cocktail songs written in many a year.” Acknowledging the vast difference between Scud Mountain Boys and their country music forbears on the one hand, and new crossover stars like Garth Brooks on the other, Rolling Stone called the album, “country in that the songs are the honest, homespun sort that characterized country before it picked up a blow-dryer.” With the success of Massachusetts bringing increased demand for the first two albums, Sub Pop re-issued them as The Early Year, a double CD, in 1997. That year also found the band adjusting to a full-time musical career. Pernice, for one, had to reconcile the new career path with the master’s degree in creative writing he had completed in 1996. Finding himself with a lot more time to write songs, he stacked up a few albums’ worth in a short period of time. He also devoted some creative energy to the Pernice Brothers, a side project. Perhaps this outside effort was a sign of discord among the band’s members, as the Scud Mountain Boys disbanded abruptly in the fall of 1997. Pernice remained on Sub Pop Records and continued to explore what he found lurking in the cracks between rock, pop, country, and other musical influences. He has since founded Ashmont Records, and released many albums under his name and others. The Scud Mountain Boys had not been together since breaking up, until a series of impromptu performances in New England in 2011, followed by several dates in early 2012. This is the third in the series of Nan True’s Hole Tapes . All these tracks were recorded live in England in the 1970’s and taken from John Peel’s former archive of Beefheart live tapes. This volume presents more of a mystery than the others as Peel had collected all these tracks onto a reel of tape but did not detail which members of the Magic Band play on which tracks and no dates other than 1970s , simply noting that this was Captain Beefheart performing some of the most avant garde versions of his live tracks. Peel also noted “recording quality not always excellent but the quality of the outrageous but excellent live performances wins through” Great cd booklet with rare montages and images of Captain Beefheart and Magic Band members. Musician, misfit, culture warrior and bullshitter: Robert "Bobby" Conn. Fire Records are delighted to announce that they will be releasing the new album from Bobby Conn entitled ‘Macaroni’. Recorded with his new band The Burglars, this album is the first since 2007’s King for a Day, and his first new release on Fire Records. Bobby has equally delighted and annoyed hipsters since first appearing on the Chicago music scene in the mid '90s. Blending aggressive showmanship with an omnivorous love of musical genres, from Suicide to Streisand or from The Sweet to Stravinsky, Bobby has often irritated and provoked audiences, but never bored them. Bobby Conn's lyrics document the continuing absurdities of contemporary Western culture, illustrating and celebrating the convenient hypocrisies that allow us to sleep soundly every night. He developed "The Continuous Ca$h Flow System" in 1995 as a critic of the magical thinking that Americans employ concerning their debt fuelled lifestyles. 15 years later, Bobby's "Continuous Ca$h Flow" is revealed as the operating principle of the entire financial system. He has accurately described the Armageddon based world view of America's Christian right since 1996, and tracked its evolution from fringe fanaticism to its current place in the heart of America's political mainstream. But despite the relevance and prescience of his songwriting, his devotion to total entertainment in glitter and heels has confused as many as he has enlightened. He continues to collaborate with his wife and musical partner, Monica Boubou. Fully his equal as an entertainer herself (and more than his equal in stature), her electrified violin defines the epic melodic reach of their music. In between bouts of touring, Bobby and his band, The Burglars, headed to the studio to create this collection of new tunes, titled "Macaroni". Macaroni is Bobby Conn’s first album in 5 years (and first for Fire Records) will be released on CD/LP in March - followed swiftly by a re-issue of his landmark debut "Bobby Conn". Macaroni is a contrast between "this is what you want" (the packaged predictable blandness of a Macaroni dinner) but this what you get (the violent mess of reality). Macaroni will be supported by a 7" Single "More Than You Need" backed with a cover version of the Walker Brothers "Fat Mama Kick. Track Listing : 1. Cant Stop The War 2. GREEED 3. Underground Vktm 4. The Inner Flame is a “tribute to a Rainer Ptacek, while slammed with brain cancer, an unknown songwriter who had somehow attracted the attention of Robert Plant and Billy Gibbons along the way, my best friend, and the most satisfying player on the planet I've ever jammed with,” explains Giant Sand’s Howe Gelb. Playing a wonderful collection of Rainer’s songs, and featuring Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, Emmylou Harris, PJ Harvey, Evan Dando, Lucinda Williams, Vic Chestnutt, Jonathan Richman and others, Fire Records is proud to reissue this compilation and pay tribute and celebrate his legacy. Includes new tracks and liner notes, available on CD, LP and digital download. Robert Plant & Jimmy Page contributed new composition for this album, ‘Rude World’. Featuring Mercury Music Prize winner PJ Harvey. Re-mastered and repackaged with new liner notes by Howe Gelb. Track Listing : 1. Giant Sand & Rainer - The Inner Flame 2. Producer Adrian Sherwood and Ari Up, the lead singer of the formative British all-female punk group The Slits, first met in 1978. As Sherwood put it, “Ari really stood out in the crowd partly for her appearance but more so for an almost unhinged enthusiasm for the music.” Sherwood and Ari Up would go on to form a long-lasting friendship and musical partnership. Ari Up featured as part of the original On-U collective which recorded under the guise of New Age Steppers in 1980. Their eponymous debut album formed one of the cornerstones of On-U Sound, both as a record label and as a musical production house for the next three decades. Whenever Sherwood and Ari met up in the UK, they worked together on a then-untitled album. The first of the recordings for that album began a few years ago with the song ‘Conquer’, then in 2008 Ari Up was diagnosed with the cancer from which she would die just two years later at the end of 2010. With her unquenchable passion for music, she maintained that she and Adrian would finish the album they had begun. And they did. Sherwood flew to Jamaica where they completed the recordings for what now named ‘Love Forever’. The album’s title is the name of a track on the very first New Age Steppers album from 1980; often when Ari signed anything it would read “Love Forever...Ari”. Other On-U Players taking part in the sessions include Denise Sherwood, N. Coplowe, Skip McDonald, Dave Wright, Filipe Tavares, Ghetto Priest and Adamski. In addition to lead vocals, Ari Up is also credited with drum programming, basslines, and keyboards. All tracks produced by Adrian Sherwood. This latest offering from New Age Steppers is the culmination of 30 years of friendship and love between two of Britain’s brightest and creative cult talents. Fittingly, it is also the first release of the 31st year in existence of the mighty On-U Sound imprint, still as proudly independent now as the day it first sprang to life. Track Listing : 01. Conquer 02. My Nerves 03. Love Me Nights 04. The Scheisse Song 05. Musical Terrorist 06. The Fury Of Ari 07. Wounded Animal 08. The Worst Of Me 09. Revelation 10. The Last Times 11. Death Of The Trees

BOB MARGOLIN with
Mike Sponza Band
Blues Around The World “I found new Italian musical brothers touring with the Mike Sponza Band in Central Europe in April, 2011. The fire we started onstage burns in this studio recording too.” —Bob Margolin American Bluesman Bob Margolin has played “Blues around the world” since the 1970s. After spending seven years as a key player in the Muddy Waters Blues Band, Bob continued touring as a leader of his own band and as sideman and musical director for Blues legends like Pinetop Perkins, Nappy Brown, Hubert Sumlin, and many others. He has been a keeper of the flame of the Blues, a living bridge to the fast-disappearing older generation of Bluesmen, and a support and inspiration to the next generation on their way up. Over the years Bob has recorded many albums of his own and played on countless others, and has also become known as a producer, an author, and a founding partner of the artist-centered VizzTone label group. Meanwhile, across the ocean... A longtime Bob Margolin fan, Italian Blues musician Mike Sponza was tearing it up with his own band when he reached out to Bob to join them for a tour of Central Europe. They did ten shows in six European countries, and the combination was so magical, the music so strong that by the end of the tour it was clear they needed to go into the studio to make a record together. Blues Around the World captures that magic with original songs by Bob and by Mike as well as a couple audience favorites, and as a bonus track, Bob’s acoustic take on the classic “Love In Vain.”
