presents

Photek stands mercilessly on the edge. A sonic scientist, pushing both his sounds and fans' expectations to the outermost limits since 1994, he floods the footnotes of electronica like MP3s clutter up your hard drive. 2011 saw him drop a series of sounds that reflect the truest perception of him. Driven by his years of studio discipline; sharpened by an acute awareness that he'll be received by the heads that know him well and ears that don't know him at all. Destination tomorrow: Photek's decorated past and diligent work ethic leads us here. The new music you've heard from Photek in 2011 is yet another chapter in a life spent overdosing on sonic nuances and boundary testing. In the past 12 months his new material has been remixed by the brightest young stars of dance music - Boddika, Falty DL, Addison Groove and Breach to name a few. In turn, Photek has remixed for the likes of Moby, Jess Mills, Distance, Ray Lamontagne and was part of Daft Punk's Tron Remixed package - for which he has been nominated for a Grammy. His newly re-launched label, Photek Productions, has this year released the 'Avalanche EP' which garnered international support from tastemakers such as Benji B, Gilles Peterson, Skream, Annie Mac, Zane Lowe and more, and the 'Aviator EP'. The single 'Closer' was also released on Pinch's pioneering Tectonic Recordings in June, adding to the gathering noise that you can't ignore - Photek is well and truly back and you can be sure that whatever sound he drops next, it won't fail to get the world's attention... Watch out in 2012 for his installment in the highly influential DJ Kicks compilation series on K7 Records and his long awaited new artist album.

AD TEXT "There are mavericks out on their own, the fearlesss creators operating on the very fringes of their respective scenes - Photek is just such an artist."- DJ Mag "Photek has sweated over every little drum sound and fill resulting in a complex and subtle sound that is a million miles away from the nasty sound of commercial dancefloor dubstep."DrownedInSound.com "Easily more creative, more experimental and more thought out than his counterparts. A revolutionary musician and composer."- Sputnikmusic.com Tour dates – 02.08.2012 Music Box, LA / 03.14.2012 SXSW Kingdom Austin / 04.06.2012 Babylon, Istanbul

Overview

Artist: Clark Title: Iradelphic

"Clark’s compositions come across like the inner whirlings of a beautifully disturbed mind" –– Pitchfork

4.3.12 WARPCD222 / WARPLP222

Chris Clark has been on a journey. The adventure started three years ago after the release of previous album Totems Flare. He recorded Iradelphic in Australia, Berlin, Wales, Brussels, Cornwall, Norway and London using a diverse range of tools - from the vintage to the cutting edge modern. For the tracks “Open” and “Secret” he even enlisted the vocal talents of Massive Attack’s Martina Topley Bird. A producer known for his dark, heavy techno derived sounds on the Warp roster, Iradelphic sees a transcendence to Clark’s most accessible album to date. Clark stood up from the drum machine, computer and keyboard to learn piano and guitar, which highlights many of the tracks including the epic three-part suite “The Pining.” Iradelphic promises to fulfill Clark followers and capture the ears of a brand new audience.

FIRST AID KIT recorded their debut album, The Big Black & The Blue with their father at their home studio in Sweden. Released in North America on May 2010 via Wichita Recordings the effort quickly earned praise from AOL Music’s Spinner blog, NPR’s All Songs Considered, Nylon, and SPIN, among others, eventually landing on HearYa, Nylon, and PasteMagazine.com’s ‘Best of 2010’ lists. In support of the endeavor the sisters performed at the Austin City Limits festival, CMJ Music Marathon, and SXSW in addition to touring the US twice to high praise and steady college/ non-comm radio support. In late 2010 they recorded a Blue Series 7-Inch single of Buffy SainteMarie’s “Universal Soldier” with Jack White at his request in his Nashville, TN Third Man Studios. That single was released in early 2011. Later in 2011 the band found themselves opening for tours for both Lykke Li and Bright Eyes in The States as well as recording their sophomore album, The Lion’s Roar with producer, Mike Mogis. Released in January 2012, the effort was greeted heartily via press and radio and was found perched on the Billboard 200 album chart upon release. First Aid Kit kicks off spring 2012 with a North American headlining tour on March 28th at Webster Hall in New York, NY. The tour – which follows a six-week journey throughout Europe, New Zealand, and Australia – will continue with dates in Canada and across the US before wrapping up on April 22nd with their second weekend performance at the Coachella Music and Arts festival in Indio, CA. Wichita Recordings are thrilled to reissue their debut album which fell out of print in late 2011 and features live show stand outs: “Ghost Town”, “Hard Believer” and “I Met Up With The King”. The Gaddabouts look out now! street DATe: April 3rd, 2012

Look Out Now, the sophomore album from The Gaddabouts, will be released April 3 on racecarLOTTA Records. Featuring renowned songwriter and musician Edie Brickell alongside Steve Gadd, Pino Palladino and Andy Fairweather-Low, The Gaddabouts have been declared an, “…all-star collaborative…” by Time Out New York, while Relix says of their 2011 self-titled debut, “…Brickell’s playful, finely honed lyrics, smooth honey-toned vocals and the band’s mostly laid-back grooves make every track shine.” Moreover, last April, the quartet made their live debut at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall as part of the WFUV concert series. The 19-song, double disc album was recorded in New York City in April and July of 2011. Highlights include the opening track, “Meat On Your Bones,” which was composed and recorded spontaneously. In Edie’s own words, “The song was a true improvisation, spur of the moment. Steve chose to start the record with this improv because it feels great and sets the tone for a playful band dynamic heard throughout the album.”

Jill BArber mischievous moon

“With echoes of everything from Burt Bacharach to Blossom Dearie and Patsy Cline, Canadian singer-songwriter Jill Barber has what must be the most beautifully orchestrated pop record in years”  toronto star “Barber’s voice—Moon’s most poignant instrument—alternates smoothly between little girl purr and full strength soar, getting its best showcases during the exquisite “Tell Me” and tortured lament “If It Weren’t for Loving You.” With Moon, Barber’s transition from folkie to femme fatal.” e xcl aim maga zine

“Barber’s got another of those soothing voices that sounds as though it’s been around longer than she has.”  MOJO “Jill Barber is part of a breed of foxy and self-assured singer-songwriters . . . a tribute to an era when a song could be cheeky and sexy without being explicit.”   Maverick Maga zine , UK

O

n her latest record Mischievous Moon, Canadian chanteuse Jill Barber picks up the torch where the golden age of music left off. Taking a giant step forward from the typical confines of the singersongwriter, she delivers an album of eleven original, fully orchestrated songs that strongly evoke—and could themselves become—classics. From the moment you hear her sultry voice on the opening track, you will be transported. Possessing the beauty of classic era Billie Holliday, Patsy Cline and Edith Piaf, Barber gives a gentle nod to the old standards while making way for a new era of modern love songs. One of Canada’s most beloved performers, Jill sells out theatres from coast to coast, and has garnered numerous awards, including two Juno nominations (Canada’s Grammy). Fans of Jill include Kris Kristofferson, who calls her “a real songwriter, a damn good songwriter” and Josh Ritter, who has toured extensively with Jill. Fellow Canadian Ron Sexsmith, who has written with the likes of Coldplay and Elvis Costello, has become one of her closest collaborators, having co-written two songs on Mischievous Moon (Chances and Old Flame). Truly Canada’s Sweetheart, Jill is able to sing in both English and French. Having spent considerable time writing and studying in the south of France there is a definite french influence on Jill’s music. This has endeared her to Francophone audiences in Quebec and resulted in two sold-out headlining performances at the International Montreal Jazz Festival. This special US version of Mischievous Moon features a collection of songs from two of her most popular Canadian releases, 2008’s Chances and 2011’s Mischievous Moon. Both records were made in Toronto and produced by Les Cooper, who also composed the orchestral arrangements, all recorded live off the floor by a 12-piece string section at the Glenn Gould Theatre. America, prepare to be transported to a glorious era where virtually every moment is steeped in elegance and beauty, with the occasional hint of, yes, mischief.

will.i.am LOST CHANGE

THE BEAT GENERATION

10th Anniversary Expanded & Limited Edition will.i.am has been making music since high school, where he teamed up with fellow classmate and breakdancer Apl de Ap to form Atban Klann. Signed to Easy E's Ruthless Records in 1992, the duo's debut was never released. In 1995, Taboo joined the group to form the Black Eyed Peas. In 1998 the band's debut 'Behind the Front' saw comparisons being made to Tribe Called Quest, before 'Bridging the Gap' established BEP in artists in there own right. In 2001 BBE released will.i.am's soundtrack to an internet movie, Lost Change, as part of their critically acclaimed 'Beat Generation' series. "I scored this film and I wanted more cats to hear it. I thought it would be perfect for the Beat Generation. I really liked Jay Dee's 'Welcome to Detroit' so my manager got a hold of [BBE boss] Peter by looking up the address on the back and then, next thing you know, we had a show in Amsterdam so we went to his house". On his solo project, will.i.am was given complete creative freedom and allowed to indulge his own musical passions. will.i.am doesn't make the distinction between the thug-stylings of mainstream hip hop and the conscious rap of acts such as Jurassic 5 and Talib Kweli. "Creatively, hip hop is making a comeback. You have to be conscious to be into hip hop, even if you're talking about materialism. That's just wants on your conscience. Music is a conscious artform as you get the chance to express the things that you think about." To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the cult series, Beat Generation, BBE are re-releasing “Lost Change as expanded and limited edition, including all instrumentals.

- Will.i. am is the winner of 7 grammy awards. - He has produced with artists such as U2, Rihanna and Cheryl Cole. - Lost Change is Will.I.Am's first full length album and is often said to be the best of BBE's Beat Generation. - With the Black Eyed Peas will.i.am and his group became one of only eleven artists to simultaneously hold the number one and two spot on the Billboard hot 100.

Teaser 7” vinyl for the “Best of Perception and Today Records compiled by DJ Spinna and BBE Soundsystem” to be released in Spring 2012! Perception Productions, a New York based label that ran from the late 60s through until 1974, was a strangely eclectic affair. Its roster stretched from a radical Afro- American poet through to the pop band King Harvest whose hit ‘Dancing In The Moonlight’ became a massive hit for the UK band Toploader a couple of decades later. When they started up the label their initial signings suggested that the black high arts were their true love. The first year saw Shirley Horn, James Moody and the most famous of them all Dizzy Gillespie signed in quick succession. Gillespie is one of African-American music’s most important figures, who in the 1940s alongside Charlie Parker figureheaded the revolutionary changes in jazz that were labeled Bebop. He was rarely without a record deal from that day forth until his death in 1993, so getting him to sign to the new label was something of a coup. He made two albums for the label, the second ‘Portrait Of Jenny’ was a beautiful jazz album, but his debut ‘The Real Thing’ put him in a more contemporary setting. The funking up of Dizzy was a success and the two tracks we feature here are groove jazz masterpieces. In particular Mike Longo’s ‘Matrix’ has been long sought after by collectors and is a well known sample used most effectively by the Beatnuts on their track ‘World Famous’. Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto was one of the most successful jazz artists of the 60s with her records for Verve, most notably the hit ‘Girl From Ipanema’ recorded with Stan Getz. Her sole album for Perception was something of a gem, with arrangements by Eumir Deodato who at the time was at the height of his success with Creed Taylor’s CTI label. She is backed by an all-star group that includes Airto Moreira, Billy Cobham, Patrick Adams and Mike Longo. Produced by the singer herself, it featured a stunning version of Jorge Ben’s

Not for nothing was DJ Kicks once named “the most important DJ mix series ever” by dance music bible Mixmag. In the 17 years since it started in 1995 with CJ Bolland’s scene-defining techno set, via landmark releases by Kruder & Dorfmeister, Smith & Mighty and Kemistry & Storm, it’s established a reputation for quality, forward-thinking mixes by dance music’s big names. That’s a statement that holds just as true for the last five years, which has seen UK synth poppers Hot Chip, New York retro-futurists The Juan MacLean and London dubstep icon Kode 9, amongst many others, add their weight to the franchise. A big part of DJ Kicks idea is the exclusive track on each album: every artist doing DJ Kicks has to write and include a piece of music that’s not available anywhere else. The second Exclusives album, follow-up to the first collection released in 2006, collates all 14 of those DJ Kicks-only moments from the last five years. The result is as wide ranging and eclectic as the series itself. Kieren ‘Four Tet’ Hebden turns in a stunning performance on Pockets, fusing clattering live percussion to sweeps of analogue synth and swirling electronics. My Piano sees Hot Chip on fine form, weaving the piano of the song title into one of their trademark synth pop grooves. Meanwhile The Juan MacLean conjure up a mammoth ten-minute slow-burn dancefloor bomb that starts with a bubbling Giorgio Moroder-style arpeggio and builds to a crescendo as glassy keys are piled on in multiple layers and Nancy Wang sings “You like it when it’s too much”. One of the strongest DJ Kicks mixes of recent times is that by London expatriate Scuba, who now lives in Berlin. His track M.A.R.S. bridges the two cities, taking the techno aesthetic of his adopted home and grafting it onto a breakbeat steeped in his dubstep roots. Then there’s Triangle Folds by techno wünderkind James Holden, a mind-bending digital flight of fancy beamed in from the outer rim of human consciousness. Oh, and Photek’s new exclusive track taken from his forthcoming mix, the 39th incidentally, which is due out next year. Surprisingly, perhaps, for an album compiled from sources with no connection other than DJ Kicks, which by its nature is a broad church, it hangs together satisfyingly. well. The common element? This is the sound of electronic music’s great and good at their very best. It’s what DJ Kicks is all about. Long may it continue.

Landscape and memory have always played a central part in the music of Joe Corrales Jr. aka Yppah (pronounced “yippah”). It’s what gives his tunes both their sense of place, their physicality, and their ethereal - almost nostalgic sweetness. His third album for Ninja Tune reflects a change in the landscape around him. Midway through the process of recording the demos for what became “Eighty One,” Corrales started making regular trips to Galveston, on the Texas Gulf coast, to surf. So energised was he by his experiences, he left his home in Texas and moved to Long Beach, California. Unsurprisingly then, he says that the images he had in his head as he made his new music were of the sea and the beach. “I wanted a lot of the songs to feel like a warm wash,” he explains. On tracks like “Blue Schwinn” you can feel the pull and push of the ocean, the sun refracting through water. Corales bifurcated belief in the power of both hip hop and My Bloody Valentine is still evident, but this is the warmest, most uplifting music he has made. This is reinforced by Corrales’ other source of inspiration. The record takes its title from the year Corrales was born and, perhaps the very act of moving away from childhood locales stirred up “memories from random times in my life. Like I was trying to recreate certain feelings I had at different points in my life with melodies, if that makes any sense.” And he goes on to ask, “You know how when you’re a child you feel your life has a certain melodic theme that you can’t really put your finger on and you can almost hear it, but its not anything you’ve ever heard before?” “Eighty One” is his attempt to capture those melodies. The last piece in this act of reinvention is the presence on four tracks of Anomie Belle, a singer, producer and classically trained violinist based in Seattle. The pair met when Yppah was touring with Bonobo in 2010. The pair hit it off and Corrales contributed a remix to Belle’s album, “The Crush.” In return, she offered to listen through to demos of “Eighty One” to see if she could find a track which she could add something to. In the words of Yppah, “it was such a natural fit she ended up doing four!” Beautiful, uplifting and imbued with a natural, unaffected warmth that cuts through the most biting cold, “Eighty One” is Yppah’s most satisfying work yet.

Relatives is a document of collective life change. Over the course of three years since Mad Gregs' previous studio release Big Nun, each song underwent a lengthy maturation, mirroring the individual and collective growth of the band members through the album's gradual genesis. Though musically complex, the album is grounded in the candid emotionality and bedrock analog sound of late 70's soft rock. The creative process behind Relatives has been one of intention yielding to discovery. We hope this meditative quality envelops the listener, inspiring them to reflect on the nature of time and transformation in their own lives. "They sound like memories" -Fantastic Weapon

Birdsong Ancient Light Does Not Get Old Shadow and Substance Perihelion Form and Abandon Blessed Zelma

Ten million years and eight minutes, the long-awaited follow-up to Caltrop’s much-loved 2008 record World Class, finds North Carolina’s titans of Southern psych-rock in rarefied form, exhibiting the confident and focused sound a band achieves only after years of playing together in the same room. Caltrop’s live-in-the-studio approach may bring to mind classic heavy hitters like Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath and The Allman Brothers, but unlike lesser bands on a similar trip, Caltrop carefully shapes their songs so that each riff follows its predecessor with an uncanny logic: the effect is that of an impossibly heavy object carried ever-upward on delicate, silken wings. Simultaneously crushing and uplifting, Caltrop’s ten million years makes believers of us all. As one particularly inspired fan has been known to yell during their unparalleled live performances, “Caltrop: There is no substitute!” Genres: Psychedelic, Sludge/Doom Metal, Progressive Rock, Stoner Rock, Blues/Southern Rock, RIYL: Arbouretum, Sleep, Mastodon, Pontiak, Baroness, Black Sabbath, Allman Brothers, Jimi Hendrix Selling Points: • National/International campaigns by Team Clermont, AAM, Redeye • Recorded and mixed by Nick Petersen (Horseback, Bellafea, Des_Ark, Ben Davis) • Mastered by James Plotkin (Isis, Earth, Horseback, SUNNO))), Pelican, Khanate) • Touring with Arbouretum, Pontiak, Horseback, Black Cobra, Valient Thorr, Royal Thunder, Hull Praise: • “With thick, fuzzed out riffs leading the charge on most of their songs, Caltrop exists at the improbable intersection of Sabbath and the Allman Brothers Band, creating detuned, psychedelic dirges with a soulful Southern blues/rock inflection. Add a touch of the long-form, post-metal song structures of bands like Baroness and Earth, and you begin to see what makes the group tick.” Allmusic.com • “Caltrop rebuilds blues-based heavy metal with big eyes focused through ambition and musical maneuvers carved in perfection … [World Class is] arguably the best full-length album released by any band in this state this year.” - The Independent • “Caltrop is, without a doubt, the most talented band I've ever had the pleasure of seeing live … Within the first couple of minutes of their set, I had to pick my jaw off the floor.” - Doomgrinder

STREET DATE - 4.3.12

“By the time we arrived at the indie Xanadu (Spaceland), Dallas Don and the Echo Park Players were blowing even more glossy bubbles, with the former Beck drummer and fronter for Lutefisk warbling of feral girlfriends and other misfortunes with durable Cali-country sweetness.” - Ron Garmon, L.A. Citybeat, 2009 Singer / songwriter / multi-instrumentalist Dallas Don Burnet rose to prominence during the vibrant Los Angeles music scene of the 1990’s, first as bassist with critically acclaimed post punk outfit, Thelonious Monster (signed to Capitol Records), then as drummer for singer-songwriter and Geffen recording artist Beck. In 1994, Burnet moved into the spotlight to front Lutefisk, the quintessential Silver Lake alt-rock band who would go on to release 2 records for the indie Bongload label, before signing with A&M. In 2009, Spin magazine declared Lutefisk to be one of the “100 greatest bands you’ve (probably) never heard of”.

Now in 2012, Dallas Don Burnet is set to release his debut solo lp, entitled “Cancel My Disappointment”. A collection of recent songs as well as older works deemed “too soft and sweet” for his previous groups, “Cancel” features Burnet on vocals and most of the instruments, with help from a few other L.A. luminaries such as Greg Kurstin (Bird and the Bee), and Probyn Gregory (Brian Wilson band). On this release, Dallas Don trades crunch for jangle, and the songs brim with melody and harmony, with strings, keyboards, horns and even harp adding to the guitars that bouy it all in a lush, orchestral “California pop” soundscape. Comparisons have been made to Grandaddy, David Bowie, Elliot Smith, and ELO, but on this release Burnet creates a sound that nods to the past and lives in the moment, yet remains his own, proving why he’s long been considered “one of the best songwriters in Los Angeles”.

Floor of the Sky one-sided LP

btv090

Initial conversations about the one-sided LP began around steven r. smithʼs work with Hala Strana and Eastern European music with a common love of Woven Hand. steven r. smith began working on the one-sided LP in 2008 and sent an early draft. The timing for release wasn't right, so smith took advantage of the extra time re-working the songs, updating the recordings and even adding a track. Many difficulties ensued getting an etching accomplished. Our friend Tim Hoover saved the day initially, but the design required three different sets of etchings after problems getting a successful test pressing. The final etching was lost at the pressing plant for nearly seven months.

So, finally, after several delays, Burnt Toast Vinyl is proud to announce that this recording is now available in 2012. Floor of the Sky is the latest addition to the btv series of one-sided LPs which has featured such artists as Damien Jurado, Early Day Miners, Aspera, Emperor X, Isolation Years, Mt. Eerie, Efterklang, Yume Bitsu, Ester Drang, and more. Itʼs six songs spanning nineteen minutes of intricate guitar-based instrumentals that rise from ambiance to roaring, related to steven r. smithʼs solo output without falling into any sort of categorization. Itʼs experimental and ambient, sprawling without becoming monotonous. American multi-instrumentalist steven r. smith has been releasing a steady stream of solo records for well over a decade as well as playing in various improvisational groups including Mirza, Thuja, Hala Strana, and most recently Ulaan Khol. This music has ranged from sparse solo guitar improvisations to Hala Stranaʼs re-workings of Eastern European traditional folk tunes to the dense, psychedelic fuzz guitar workouts of Ulaan Khol. Floor of the Sky was recorded in smithʼs California based Worstward Studios on all analog equipment. Musically, smithʼs work over the years could be summed up as a struggle to contain a series of opposites: light and darkness, sorrow and joy, despair and hope. smith has recorded for numerous labels including Immune Recordings, Important Records, Catsup Plate, Soft Abuse, Emperor Jones, Last Visible Dog, Jewelled Antler, Digitalis, and Darla. “one of Americaʼs great hidden artists.” – Dusted Magazine “Smithʼs cinematic sound taps into a huge well of American music and simultaneously forges ahead with fruitful experimentation, clearing new ground.” – Ptolemaic Terrascope “Smith [has a] deft ability to extort haunting beauty from the strings of modified instruments, bowing, scraping and plucking his way through” – Boomkat “a rich and washed out soundscape of wheezing melancholy melodies all wrapped up in a dense sonic fog…plenty dark and enigmatic, lovely and mysterious.” – Aquarius

The Jealous Sound A Gentle Reminder LP

btv097

Blair Shehan says that his time away from The Jealous Sound wasn't a matter of losing his way. It was a matter of finding it. "I got zeroed out, and I had to figure out how to do things in a healthy way," the singer-guitarist says, recounting the long, strange trip it's been to 2012, when the Los Angeles quartet will release its first album in nine years, A Gentle Reminder. "I've been humbled, and now I'm a very different person than I was in 2003. I've learned a lot about just being in the world." Many of those life lessons are revealed in the grandeur of the new album, a poignant and emotional triumph that not only proves a worthy successor to Kill Them With Kindness — named one of Spin's best albums of ʼ03 — but reveals the foursome at the top of its craft. Open-hearted, yes, but not really gentle at all, A Gentle Reminder represents a 44-minute epiphany set to cascading guitars, thundering rhythms and Shehan's evocative vocals. Made in the Foo Fighters' Studio 606 with John Lousteau producing, A Gentle Reminder features founding members Shehan (ex-Knapsack) and guitarist Pedro Benito (Ex-Sundayʼs Best) working alongside the Foos' Nate Mendel (filling in on bass for the departed John McGinnis) and new drummer Bob Penn. Josh Staples (The Velvet Teen) contributes backing vocals and bass on two tracks.

TRACK LISTING 1. Beautiful Morning 2. Change You 3. Promise of The West 4. Your Eyes Were Shining 5. This Is Where It Starts 6. Here Comes The Ride 7. Equilibrium 8. Perfect Timing 9. A Gentle Reminder 10. Waiting For Your Arrival

How the quartet coalesced to recapture the magic is a labyrinthine tale that covers three states and includes a lot of emotional baggage, but the first turning point came in late 2004 after rigorous touring behind Kill Them With Kindness. A major label was poised to come on board and help with a follow-up. "But we were simply out of gas," Shehan says. "I was spent. I remember John telling me, 'You know, you don't have to feel bad if you don't want to do this.'" A half-hearted attempt at carrying on yielded only 2008ʼs Got Friends EP, and it was painfully evident The Jealous Sound had stalled completely. So Shehan set aside the band life, moved to Las Vegas and got a day job. "There's a sense that I flipped out and left; people thought I went crazy," Shehan says. "But what's crazy? Staying in a band at my age with no stability? Ignoring the normal parts of becoming an adult? People don't necessarily understand what we do, and the commitment it takes to do what we do." After two-plus years in Las Vegas, "things there fell apart in very dramatic fashion," Shehan says, so he moved to Florida and at one point was even poised to take the LSAT. He bought a guitar instead, and reconnected with Benito, whose friendship with Mendel helped The Jealous Sound land a spot opening a 2009 tour for the bassist's previous band, emo pioneers Sunny Day Real Estate. The old juices started flowing. When that tour ended, The Jealous Sound began meticulously piecing together the ideas that would become A Gentle Reminder, an experience that at once thrilled and horrified Shehan. "Sometimes I'd be writing a song and think, 'Oh, man, I don't really want to say this, do I?'" Shehan says. "But the process of writing removes any filters you have — you're not as in control of things as you'd like to be. It ended up being very liberating.” That sense of freedom rings throughout “A Gentle Reminder,” which finds Shehan taking inventory of the past, for better or worse, and looking stoically toward the future. He acknowledges the weight of his regrets in “Here Comes the Ride” but sounds up to the task of bearing it. The effervescent “Your Eyes Were Shining” seems on the surface directed to a sweetheart, but when Shehan sings “The heavens opened wide / and let you in,” he could just as easily be talking about reconnecting, happily, with his songwriting muse. That theme of renewal re-emerges in the “beating drum” and “beating heart” of “This Is Where It Starts.” There, as he likens his visions and dreams to “a rush of blood,” fans of The Jealous Soundʼs open-hearted buoyancy will be happy that the quartet has once again opened a vein. Indeed, after almost a decade, Shehan is still spilling blood. It's just more mature blood. "Gone are the powerpop induced youthful anxieties of Kill Them With Kindness, and in their place are cleaner guitars and a more subdued vocal delivery from Blair, who has gone from insisting 'there is hope for us,' to 'you have let me down/you've disappointed me.'" - BROOKLYN VEGAN "Shehan's voice, while lower in register than it was on previous releases, is still ethereal in its beauty. The way he constructs melancholy vocal melodies to slide effortlessly along Benito's twinkly guitar lines is nothing short of brilliant." 4/5 ALTERNATIVE PRESS "A Gentle Reminder burrows into quieter moments more than its predecessor (and 2000ʼs eponymous EP)—Shehanʼs all about palm-muting this time around—but the songs are never far from hook-laden melodies." - THE A.V. CLUB "Reminder is firmly rooted in the same unique, poignant, yearning mix of Old Wave emotion and melody, crackling, dynamic indie guitar textures and memory-adhesive pop hooks that earned The Jealous Sound its legion of cult fans. The mix is just a bit more complex, ambitious and assured here, and many of the tracks best the material on Kindness as a result." - CREATIVE LOAFING "A Gentle Reminder is a grandiose presentation of poignant bass hooks and cascading guitar rhythms. Despite its polished sound, elements of earlier influences peek through to provide a beautiful medley of varying, genre-defying sound with a contemporary feel." - EXCLAIM! "Fans of The Jealous Sound and indie rock will not be disappointed." - THE OWL MAG “A solid set of rock songs that hovers somewhere between the professionalism of Jimmy Eat Worldʼs Bleed American and your favorite slice of homegrown emotion.” PITCHFORK Kill Them With Kindness, 2003

NEW RELEASE

Martyn

Hello Darkness 12” With his sophomore album ‘Ghost People’ appearing on 2011‘s end of the year charts for the likes of Mixmag (# 6), Clash Magazine (#9), DJ Magazine (#9), Data Transmission (‘Album of the Year’), Martyn returns to Brainfeeder to release a follow-up 12” this March. The 12” leads with ‘Hello Darkness,’ previously unreleased and exclusive, Martyn shuffles through a rhythmic bassline and feeling of, indeed, darkness from the very first beat. In typical Martyn fashion, the track skips its way through genre conventions, landing in a flux between 2-step, driving techno and old rave (the latter specifically heard in his ethereal and scaling upper melodies). ‘Hello Darkness’ could lend itself to the rawest, grittiest warehouse, yet simultaneously breeds a subtle feeling of elation and release, and keeps the listener guessing with a variety of quirky sound collages. It also features a remix of ‘Bauplan,’ Night Slugs bosses L-Vis 1990 and Bok Bok bring the most sinister corners of London into their remix, with a heavy grime lean and a pervading feeling of tension. Erratic samples (sounds of a tweeting bird one moment, the cocking of a gun the next) appear in-between a snap beat, metallic stabs and an apocalyptic build-up of percussion and synths. Pulsing in and out of a highly volatile atmosphere, almost as if the track is alive and breathing, this ‘Bauplan’ almost feels like an unrelated beast until Martyn’s melody lines start to unfold halfway through the track. To finish there is an exclusive remix of ‘We Are You In The Future,’ a favourite from the ‘Ghost People’ LP amongst critics and DJs across the board. Techno’s notorious man in the red mask - Redshape - steps up to create a deep and dark Detroit interpretation of Martyn’s freewheeling, sci-fi-enhanced joyride. Laced with ominous vocal samples (“It may be an accidental side effect of the drug”), the future takes on a slightly more dystopian feel with Redshape’s melancholic strings, unpredictable percussion builds and a lingering, creeping reinterpretation of the track’s original melodies. A definitive nod to the epic work of Derrick May and Carl Craig, with a hint of Kenny Larkin’s intricate builds.
