At 65, Loudon Wainwright III is older than his father ever was, and it’s got him thinking, and writing, and singing. As he puts it, the new album deals with “death ‘n’ decay” and he’s approached the subject from all angles, with his customary insight, honesty, and rueful humor. But pondering the imponderables can be a lonely business, and so, like never before, Loudon has brought in friends and family to help him with the heavy lifting. The guest singers include Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Dame Edna Everage, Chris Smither, Lucy Wainwright Roche, Suzzy Roche, Chaim Tannenbaum, Martha Wainwright, and Rufus Wainwright. Producer Dick Connette, engineer Alex Venguer, and arranger Rob Moose are all back from the Grammy-winning CD set “High Wide & Handsome.” The song treatments range from basic guitar & vocal to sophisticated string settings. There’s even some swinging funk provided by jazz guitar giant, John Scofield. Loudon Wainwright III has crafted a vibrant forty-plus year career, with over twenty-five albums, and a GRAMMY win in 2009 for “High Wide & Handsome” (Best Traditional Folk). He wrote “Dead Skunk” in 15 minutes in 1972 and it reached #12 in the Billboard chart. His songs have been covered by Mose Allison, Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Kate & Anna McGarrigle, among others. Loudon is also an accomplished actor and has appeared in films directed by Martin Scorsese, Tim Burton, Cameron Crowe, and Judd Apatow, all while remaining one of the most original and impressive songwriters and live performers of our generation. MOJO Magazine calls Wainwright “lyrically compelling and emotionally overpowering.”

MAPS & ATLASES BEWARE AND BE GRATEFUL
bark125 CD / LP+MP3
STREET DATE: APRIL 17, 2012
On their second full-length album, Chicago’s Maps & Atlases defy easy categorization, choosing to walk their own incomparable musical path. Beware and Be Grateful sees the band’s trademark experimentalism morphing to suit a more direct – though no less beguiling – songcraft. Fueled by a panoply of sonic influences, the album abounds with novel invention, spanning hymnal harmonies, percolating rhythms, even, in the case of centerpiece track, “Silver Self,” a full-on guitar solo (though to be fair, it’s unlike any solo previously committed to wax). Songs like “Remote And Dark Years” and “Fever” are gloriously liquid and lyrical, channeling Maps & Atlases’ tightly constructed creativity into a genuinely distinctive brand of boundary-busting, asymmetrical pop. Self-assured and astonishingly ambitious, Beware and Be Grateful is a worthy follow-up to the band‘s acclaimed Barsuk debut Perch Patchwork.

PRAISE FOR PERCH PATCHWORK: “Maps & Atlases make technical virtuosity fun.” - Filter “Beautifully oddball symphony… equal parts lo-fi and hi-tech.” - American Songwriter “Behind humble vocals and verbal conundrums, [Maps & Atlases’] music might set up shifty progressive-rock counterpoint, hark back to late-1960s pop or turn into a percussion workout.” - John Pareles, New York Times “Intricately intertwined fretwork and drumming... genre tags seem pretty inadequate.” - Spin

New Year's Eve always suggests a new beginning, and "Cynic’s New Year” welcomes Horse Feathers' fans with the promise of something new. To be sure, old friends return. Wrapped around Justin Ringle’s unique vocals are sparkling guitars, dancing fiddles, and smoky banjo woven through the foundation of the lower strings. But new elements are everywhere: horn, woodwind and brass appear and fade, and drums drive the beat in places, providing new texture and heft. The lyrics traverse familiar themes from natural disaster to the deeply personal, each through Justin Ringle’s uniquely American linguistic lens. New vistas and new stories are explored with deep insight and fresh intimacy, always with an abiding respect and affection. The universe rises to threaten, inspire, and sometimes punish, but always to teach a valuable lesson. Souls, lost and found, embark on thoughtful emotional journeys. The first single, “Fit against the Country”, describes a nation where working men and women shoulder their careworn lives with neither apology nor surrender. These are words that need to be held close, owing their poignance as much to the savor of their pure sound as to their meaning. “Where I’ll Be”, another single from this brilliant collection, has an infectious rhythmic cadence that marks it as one of the great songs evoking trains, with a compelling sentiment that belies the gray landscape it travels. Again joining Justin is instrumental coconspirator Nathan Crockett, accompanied by a gathering of gifted Northwest musicians including Dustin Dybvig, Victor Nash, Justin Power, Catherine Odell, Jedadiah Bernards, Cory Goldman, Jenn Rawling, Adam Thompson, Scott Magee, Brandon Johnson, and sound engineer Skyler Norwood. “Cynics New Year” does not fail to deliver something beautiful and new. It navigates a thoughtful, thought-provoking expedition from the wide sky and rolling ocean to the most private corners of the human heart.
Press: “I would recommend Thistled Spring to anyone with Cass McCombs, Bon Iver, Will Oldham, and even Horse Feathers’ own onetime KRS labelmate Elliott Smith in their rainy (or any) day playlists.” - Entertainment Weekly “[Horse Feathers] has quietly stored up more staying power than most... [Justin] Ringle and his bandmates’ compositions have gotten increasingly rich since their acoustic 2006 debut, Words are Dead, with that spare sound turning into something much more worn-in and sonically engulfing, a trend that continues on the new Thistled Spring.“ - The Onion “Imagine Fleet Foxes on an empty stomach: beautiful, but not exactly comforting...the song, ”Belly of June,” is a marvelously weird little ditty, with haunting streaks of cello counteracting Justin Ringle’s mountainside warble.” -Prefix

Eleven Eleven (Expanded edition) NATIONAL release date: 3xCD/dvd: 04.17.2012
"Starting in May 2011, my great band, The Guilty Ones and I hit the highways blasting and rocking our blues in every bar, theatre and joint that we could get into across America. Some of 'em we even hit twice! As you might guess, I love playing with this band and I think it shows in the live performance that was recorded last summer (2011) at The Ark in Ann Arbor. We were in Cincinnati the night before we taped this show, and we were in Chicago the night after, so this is a document of one night (mistakes, sweat and all) traveling down the endless interstate. I'm happy to be able to release this to you on DVD in a new swanky package of Eleven Eleven (expanded edition), complete with three previously unreleased songs from that album's sessions. I hope you enjoy the music and I look forward to seeing you soon somewhere down the road.” - Dave Alvin The Dave Alvin Eleven Eleven Expanded Edition includes: • The Original Eleven Eleven Digipak • 2 Unreleased Bonus Tracks from the Original Recording Session • 1 Unreleased Song featured on FX's Hit Television Show Justified • 1 Live Disc Recorded on the Official Eleven Eleven US Tour at the Ark in Ann Arbor, MI • 1 DVD of Live Footage Featuring Dave Alvin and The Guilty Ones Live at the Ark in Ann Arbor, MI • Over Three Hours of Music • Digital Versions for All Tracks • All Contained in a Unique Slip Case Hardcover Box

EBO TAYLOR
APPIA KWA BRIDGE “I wanted to go back to a highlife feeling with this album,” explains Ebo Taylor. “The songs are very personal and it is an important part of my music to keep alive many traditional Fante songs, war chants and children’s rhymes.” ‘Appia Kwa Bridge’, released this April, is a strident return from the Ghanaian highlife guitar legend. Featuring six new compositions, his sound is more dense and tightly locked than ever with Berlin-based musicians Afrobeat Academy, a rock solid unit since regular touring worldwide following his ‘Love And Death’ album in 2010, including a string of dates for WOMAD. Jochen Stroh works his analogue magic once more from his base at Berlin’s Lovelite Studios. The album covers a variety of themes dear to Taylor. The title track references a small bridge in Ebo’s hometown of Saltpond on the Cape Coast: “it is a tiny bridge but a place known in the town where people meet, where lovers get together.” The firing, rousing ‘Ayesama’, first demo-ed during the ‘Love And Death’ sessions, is a Fante war cry, a taunt – “what’s your mother’s name?”; ‘Nsu Na Kwan’, based on a Fante proverb, asks “Which is older – the river or the old road” with the sub-text to respect your elders and the brilliant ‘Abonsam’ carries the message that Abonsam (The Devil) is responsible for evil in the world and that we should follow the Christian message. Elsewhere, the album features a new version of highlife anthem, ‘Yaa Amponsah’, first recorded during the ‘20s by Jacob Sam’s Sam’s Trio before becoming a popular standard in Ghana, and a cover of an original track from Taylor’s time with Apagya Show Band during the ’70s, ‘Serwa Brakatu’, re-titled here as ‘Kruman Dey’. The closer, the acoustic ‘Barrima’, is a poignant tribute to Taylor’s first wife and one true love who sadly passed away during Summer 2011. “Ebo wrote the song following her passing and recorded this in one take during our last day in the studio,” reflects bandleader Ben Abarbanel-Wolff. “He was very emotional.”
AD TEXT "Taylor hasn't lost a bit of the spark that made his old records good... Love and Death gives us exactly what we want and does it exceedingly well." - Pitchfork "Ebo Taylor is one of the funkiest people to ever walk the earth." - Huffington Post

Survive MOD 0008 CD / LP Street Date: April 17, 2012 Hailing from Mandeville, Jamaica transplanted to the Bronx, in his teens. The back story starts with Hawk playing MC for Shabba Ranks, turns out his voice was hard to ignore. This lead to touring around the East Coast with countless other reggae stars. Hawk cut his teeth on these bare-knuckles tours also began writing, producing and releasing tracks of his own, he got heavy play on N Y C's Hot 97 and had two tracks reach #1 in the European market. This brought attention outside the states -- including Tricky, formerly of Massive Attack. They instantly connected: “Hawkman is my partner musically. It is almost like my career has changed” – Tricky explained. Hawk co-wrote and laid down vocals on six tracks for Tricky's “Blowback” album including the single “Evolution Revolution Love” where he was also featured in the video. For the next two years, Hawk and Tricky did the live thing working live audiences, television and radio worldwide. During this period Hawk's vocal TRACK LISTING ability and stage presence grew ever more powerful. An increasingly versatile singer, collaborating on live pieces with Tool, providing vocals for Sly & Robbie’s 2004 release “Version Born”, along with Black Thought (The Roots), Beans (Antipop)..., and most recently featured on Profanation by Praxis. Hawk still means every word that comes out of his mouth no matter the setting. But from the many rose just one (fittingly named) SURVIVE the long awaited, full-length from Garrison Hawk with Sly & Robbie. You can say he’s a toaster, a rapper, mc, a great writer...but most of all he’s a bad ass singer. One listen and you’ll be singing these tracks for weeks. Wild is the party track, Murderer, What She Wants, Reggae Music and Don’t Ya Know are the hooky business, Gangster for Life, Running Red have that uptempo Jamaican business,Apocalypse is the stripped down Raga muffin style, while the title tracks is more of an anthem & features Ethiopian artist Teddy Afro and Gigi. Damn, now I have to go back and listen to the CD again.

Radio Moscow PREVIOUSLY Unreleased DEBUT ALBUM
3 and 3 Quarters
STREET
DATE
4/17/12
This is Radio Moscow’s previously unreleased debut album. Recorded entirely by Parker Griggs (he plays all the instruments) when he was only 17-18, this is garage music reminiscent of the Nuggets and Pebbles compilations, with a dash of Killed By Death dropped into the mix; it’s where it all started for the six string boy wonder. “When I was 17, I started getting into a lot of underground 60’s garage and psych rock and that’s what really inspired me to make this album. My first big influences around this time were The Seeds, Chocolate Watchband, the Nuggets and Pebbles comps, The Sonics, Music Machine, Shadows of Knight, Pretty Things, and a lot of other obscure garage bands that had just released a song or two. I had been doing the punk thing as a teen and when I found this old stuff I just didn’t wanna go back. These songs were recorded in my basement in 2003/early 2004 when I was an 18 year old, fresh outta high school. I began putting these together on the side in 2003 while I was becoming tired of writing and playing drums in the punk/hardcore style for my high school band. We did one small tour the summer after I graduated high school, even though I was growing bored of the style. While on the road, the guitarist and I decided that we should cancel the last half and move on to other things. I then returned to Iowa, went straight to the basement, and started making this album. I hope you enjoy it.” – Parker Griggs ALIVE0129-1 • BOX : 30 VINYL BAR CODE : 095081012912 SRLP : $16.99 • GARAGE ROCK

Voted ‘Producer of the Year 2011′ by DJ Mag, named ‘Best Breakthrough DJ 2011′ by Mixmag, debuting at No. 9 on the Resident Advisor ’2011 DJ Poll’, scooping ‘Best Newcomer 2011′ at the Ibiza DJ Awards 2011, many magazine covers and the likes of Anja Schneider, Ellen Allien, Damon Alburn and Tricky all queuing up to offer their praise. Maya’s latest release ‘Don’t Put Me In Your Box’ EP on Hypercolour continues to add fuel to the fire and is notable in that Maya not just write, engineer, produce, mix everything on the record as always but this time she also designed all the artwork for the release as well! Again a success the release has seen Maya dominate in charts all around the world, picking up even more support at club, on radio and in the print press such as her covers for Norway’s ‘Smog’ and Germany’s ‘Groove’ magazine’s respectively. Maya Jane Coles remixes were equally in vogue in 2011 with releases on labels such as Crosstown Rebels, Leftroom, Defected and Real Tone within the house scene though spreading her genred wings Maya also tackled tracks by Little Dragon, Tricky and The Orb.Whilst under her dub alias Nocturnal Sunshine; Maya has also delivered remixes such as that of emergent talents as well as the release of ‘Can’t Hide The Way I Feel/Broke’ to make fans out of Joy Orbison, Skream, Benga, Craig Richards and Scuba to name but a few!. Maya is of course also known for her djing and mixing skills which blend her own productions and remixes with the work of other producers she respects. Alongside guest mixes for the likes of Resident Advisor, Louche, Trace A Line and Defected; Maya started an unbelievable summer with a much lauded Essential Mix which dropped in July and a cover mount mix for Mixmag’s ADE edition where Maya also played Studio 80 to launch the edition!

The Wave Pictures | Long Black Cars TRACKLISTING CD 1. STAY HERE & TAKE CARE OF THE CHICKENS 2. ESKIMO KISS 3. NEVER GO HOME AGAIN 4. MY HEAD GETS SCREWED ON TIGHTER EVERY YEAR 5. CUT THEM DOWN IN THE PASSES 6. HOOPS 7. SPAGHETTI 8. GIVE ME A SECOND CHANCE 9. THE WEST COUNTRY 10. COME HOME TESSA BUCKMAN 11. SEAGULLS 12. LONG BLACK CARS
Recorded over 4 days in New York City, The Wave Pictures return with their fourth album, Long Black Cars 12 tracks of wry, observational lyrics “peppered with details of the everyday.” Produced by long time cohort Stanley Brinks the album features star turns from Wave Pictures favourites Turner Cody and The WoWz and was inspired by topics as diverse as Humphrey Bogart, the story of Job and police brutality. Frontman Dave Tattersall’s vocals are familiarly rich, warm and soulful, with bassist Franic Rozycki’s fretwork on fine form for stand out track Never Go Home Again. Accompanied by an unusually mournful arrangement that perfectly reverberates the song’s narrative about a couple on the run, the result is pure poetry through an almost elegiac solemnity. Proceeding track My Head Gets Screwed On Tighter Every Year deals with the theme of family feuds - in it, a man addresses his long lost brother - and faces the reality that it is often those closest to you that one knows the least. Elsewhere, standout track Eskimo Kiss features drummer Jonny ‘Huddersfield’ Helm’s first recorded vocal on a Wave Pictures album. “This song is very New York to me...a very enigmatic, dark and mysterious lyric, but still peppered with details of the everyday.” says Dave Tattersall. Concentrating on finding the beautiful moments in the everyday, Eskimo Kiss ponders the little things that keep life exciting. It’s an overarching theme throughout Long Black Cars - “The point is not that it is interesting to sing about the mundane rather than the magical, but that we find the mundane magical: the everyday amazes me.” Explains Tattersall. On this, their fourth album for Moshi Moshi, The Wave Pictures once again blend their perfect mixture of minor key ballads and characteristic rock’n’roll harmonies - the result is the ebullient, sardonic pop they’ve come to be cherished for.

PHANTOM BLUES BAND INSIDE OUT
Ultimate A-Team of Veteran Session Players Turns the Blues INSIDE OUT! The Phantom Blues Band was formed as a studio band to back up Taj Mahal on his 1993 CD, “Dancing the Blues”. Their association with Taj led to headlining clubs, theatres and festivals throughout the U.S., Europe and Japan and being honored with two Grammys and a W.C. Handy Blues Award. Their Texas, Kansas, and Oklahoma musical roots have afforded them well in their decades as Hollywood studio musicians, recording with many notable recording artists including Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Rolling Stones, Taj Mahal, Joe Cocker, Jimi Hendrix, Etta James, Elton John, Leon Russell, Little Feat and B.B. King. At heart, the Phantom Blues Band’s sound is a cross-breeding of many different musical styles which includes Blues, Jazz, R&B, Gospel, Rock and Roll, and Reggae. With Inside Out, the band’s third CD, all the elements of their collective experience as studio players, producers and composers come together, combining their mighty mojo to pay homage to musical heroes and push soulfully forward with exciting new music. Their take on several old 1950’s R&B chestnuts is refreshing in its originality. Inside Out features band members Tony Braunagel, Larry Fulcher, Mike Finnigan, Darrell Leonard, Joe Sublett and Johnny Lee Schell, with a little help from world renowned session players Lenny Castro on percussion and Crusader founding member and keyboard player Joe Sample. This is music that hits your heart and soul, from the inside out.

This tour took him to prestigious venues and festivals, including New York’s Lincoln Center, Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music, and the Chicago World Music Festival. Through Thrill Jockey’s introduction of Sidi to new audiences, he is beginning to achieve well-deserved success and critical acclaim abroad.
Koïma is the natural progression from Sahel Folk, as Sidi has moved from an album of duets, recorded all in one take in his sister’s home in Gao, to a quintet recorded in a studio in Bamako. With Koïma, the intent was to record a different side of Songhaï music from the style captured on Sahel Folk. Thanks to the simplicity and the sobriety of Sahel Folk, listeners heard the Songhaï music in its purer form, its sparse soul exposed to everyone. On Koïma, the music is still distinctly Gao, but represented this time in a much richer and luxuriant way. We move from the intimacy of a quiet meeting between friends to the celebration of an evening of dance. On Koïma, Sidi is able to more fully realize his vision for his music. Accompanied by a guitarist, calabash player, traditional violin (sokou) player, and singer, Sidi has given us ten new songs that naturally mix tradition and modernity, African magic and city-dwelling dilemmas. The songs are personal tributes to the Songhaï folk music traditions, which, depending on the rhythm, are called Takambas, Holleys, Gao-Gaos, or Shallos. The album title Koïma literally means “go hear.” Koïma is an emblematic place of Gao, “a Dune with his feet in the waters of the river Niger, and with his head touching the sky,” says Sidi. In Malian folklore, Koïma is the meeting place for the most powerful wizards of the world. Sidi received permission from the dune’s chief to go on the dune and to swim in the Niger. This album is an offering to the mystical power of that place.

GENRE : DARK AMBIENT/DRONE/AMERICANA FILE UNDER: “P” Porras, Jon “B” Barn Owl Recorded by Jon Porras (otherwise known as one half of Barn Owl) at RELEASE DATE : April 17, 2012 home and in his practice space, Black Mesa is intended as a reflection NO EXPORT on desolation and the search for light in a barren land. Featuring TRACK LISTING: seven composed tracks of meditative electric guitar embellished with improvised atmospherics and white light feedback, the album follows an outlaw wanderer who ventures deep into the desert only to discover the Black Mesa, a bridge between worlds (as related to string theory or multiverse theory). It’s the desert counterpart to David Lynch’s Black Lodge, an entrance into cavernous mystery. Musically inspired by Sandy Bull, Popol Vuh, and Neil Young, Black Mesa explores the depths and expands the boundaries of ambient and drone music.
Through the haze of tremolo and twang, Porras hopes to bring a dark edge to the sunny, “far out” sentiment that is usually associated with West Coast guitar. Also, in combining Americana with the gratuitous fuzz and feedback characteristic of modern Japanese psych guitar, he intends to take from the past, in order to move forward, and to create a sound that draws from the dark shadows cast under the romantic notion of California as an open expanse, the final frontier. As opposed to going into a studio and working within a concentrated time frame, Black Mesa unfolded gradually over the course of ten months. Each song began with a composed guitar passage, and, over time, layers of improvisation and additional instrumentation were added. Wanting to step away from the long-tone, soundscape material Porras had explored in the past, he chose to focus more on composed instrumentals that balance improvisation with arrangement. The end result is a record of dark beauty, like a brightly smoldering ember in the cold desert night.

AUK004LP 2LP (180GRM) 2LP : $39.99 17th April 2012 ‘a’ Records 5055300332646 ROCK
Available on 180 grm Yellow Vinyl with a White Sunsplash 2LP . This replaces EVIL00500LP . Truth in advertising: the Brian Jonestown Massacre's sophomore album does, as promised, spring forth from the Rolling Stones' long-underrated 1967 masterpiece Their Satanic Majesties Request, copping not only Mick and Keith's leering bad-boy attitude but also their their rock-and-roll-circus spirit. Opening with the brilliant "All Around You (Intro)," a tongue-in-cheek guide to the mind-altering journey ahead, the record is a kaleidoscopic, drug-fueled freakout — like the Stones' namesake album, Second Request is painted by Eastern drones and psychedelic tangents, each track bubbling with dozens of sound effects including sitars, mellotrons, farfisas, didgeridoos, tablas, congas, and glockenspiels. Travelling through the past, darkly, the Massacre arrives on the other side unscathed; their music is too rich to be merely retro, and too knowing to be merely slavish — the Stones themselves haven't made a record this strong or entertaining in years. Most people quickly forget it, but not these guys: they've put together a tribute that goes it one better, bringing it up to date with the benefit of all the additional weirdness that's been discovered in the past 28 years. Actually more song-oriented than the Stones' effort, while at the same time more trippy. For many of the group's fans, this is their finest hour. Originally released in 1996.

With the decline of Western civilization comes a new pilgrimage of musicians looking to carve out their fates from the wreckage of the past. ÆGES are the new breed of California’s creative drifters. ÆGES was founded by Chicago-raised Larry Herweg (Pelican, San Angelus), former Seattleite Mark Holcomb (Undertow, Shift, San Angelus), multi-continent Kemble Walters (The Rise, The Blank Faces, Juliet...te and the Licks), and the sole California native Tony Baumeister (16, Cutthroats 9). Converging in Southern California across state lines and international waters, ÆGES use their world-wise musical expertise to rebuild the archetype of the heavy rock band. There’s a definite element of desert rock in ÆGES sound--the low-tuned guitars, the sludgy sun-baked riffs, the deceptive pop hook buried in the molasses-thick instrumentation. Yet the diverse backgrounds of the band members create a unique blend of perspectives and a resultantly fresh sound. The common sonic thread between the four individuals in ÆGES--their tenure in bands that explored the darker side of hardcore—manifests itself in the aggressive tonalities of their sound. But their divergent paths, both geographical and musical, broadened the emotional palette beyond the angst of their earlier bands. Their debut full length, “The Bridge”, is set for release via The Mylene Sheath (Caspian, Junius, Constants) on April 17th, 2012. The album was produced and engineered by the bands own Kemble Walters at The Canshaker Studio in Malibu, CA, and mastered by Mark Chalecki at Little Red Book Mastering (Omar Rodriguez Lopez, Goatsnake, Megadeth). The new millennium ushered in a new, revitalized era of artistic integrity for LA. We saw it in the age of the acid-hazed ‘60s, the age of the nihilistic Regan-era punks, and the current age of abandoned archetypes of a failed economy. It’s creative optimism in a time of hopelessness. It’s the music of ÆGES. - Brian Cook

ALLAH-LAS “TELL ME (WHAT’S ON YOUR MIND)” INNOVATIVE LEISURE RECORDS
STREET DATE: 4/17/12 ARTIST: ALLAH-LAS TITLE: TELL ME (WHAT’S ON YOUR MIND) FORMAT: 45 VINYL (LARGE HOLE 7”) CATALOGUE: IL 1022 FILE UNDER: ROCK/ALTERNATIVE SRP: $7.99 UPC: 634457562974 FOR FANS OF: ENTRANCE, GROWLERS, THE BYRDS, BEACH BOYS, GRAM PARSONS, LOVE
Bio Greil Marcus liked to refer back to “The Old, Weird America” when discussing a certain, famous set of recordings that emanated from a Woodstock cabin basement. ALLAH-LAS sound like the Old, Weird Los Angeles: Strains of true surfing music, American harmonies, Sunset Strip backbeat, desert ramble filtered through Goldstar Sessioneers; That pre-fuzz pedal ‘electrified folk’ music and pop groups hitting the California sound with the tambourine on just the right beat. This group sounds like bungalows in canyons; hidden deco stairsteps peeking from leafy hillsides; kustom kars and dovetails and chicks in OP shorts with long, long hair, like a Dennis Hopper photo come to life. You look at their well worn Fender guitars, their real surfer tans, their dusty suede boots - and you see it’s a sound natural to them; This isn’t an act..
“It's apt that this band was founded in the back of Amoeba Records, because their sound feels like a long lost 1960s B-side gem that you find under racks and racks full of dusty records.” - LA WEEKLY

WEIRD DREAMS — Choreography
FORMAT - CD/LP+ DL LABEL - Tough Love UPC - CD: 5055300348128 / LP+ DL: 5055300348111 CATALOG # - CD: TLV051CD / LP+ DL: TLV051LP LIST PRICE - CD: $15.99 / LP+ DL: $20.99 Following feverish response for their two EPs and recent single ‘Holding Nails’, East London’s psych-pop four-piece Weird Dreams are set to release their brilliant debut album, Choreography, on Tough Love. Influenced by both the Beach Boys and the films of David Lynch, Weird Dreams draw equally on the intricate harmonies of the former and the latter’s penchant for twisted suburban ennui. “The way David Lynch pushes reality to a point where it feels uncomfortable, his obsession with 1950s culture, his stream of consciousness approach to working”, says frontman Doran Edwards. “Weird Dreams is a bittersweet pop band with twists.” On record, it translates to the highly melodic, selfproduced Choreography, an album on which every track has the right to be considered single-worthy. Written in Doran’s studio flat overlooking the train tracks, the tunes may be sweet but the words often have a sting in their tail. “I love how idealistic and overly gushy ’50s doo wop and ’60s girl groups were, but I wanted to produce an even more dreamysounding version with lyrics that could be quite dark and resentful,” says Doran. True to that vision, tracks such as “Little Girl” and “Hurt So Bad” speak of unusual relationships, while album centrepiece “Suburban Coated Creatures” is a personal unravelling of difficult teenage years dealing with small town life. Initially built around the nucleus of Doran (guitar and vocals), Craig Bowers (drums), Weird Dreams formed when Doran and Craig met working in a vintage clothes shop, where talk frequently turned to ’50s pop, ’60s girl groups and – naturally – David Lynch movies. Releasing a joyous, cassette-only debut EP on an imprint of Craig’s aptly named Sleep All Day label, they recruited Hugo (bass), then adding James (guitar) for live duties and in time for second EP Hypnagogic Lullaby, a notably darker, harder-edged affair. And it’s with their debut album that these early forays have coalesced into a coherent, immersive whole. The band’s name – and much of its outlook – is taken from Doran’s propensity for real-life weird dreams. “Since I can remember I've always had incredibly vivid dreams, both good and bad,” says the frontman. “They've always felt like an important part of my life.”
TOMAT —Ghostclocks
FORMAT - CD LABEL - Monotreme UPC - 5065002002334 CATALOG # - Mono-63CD LIST PRICE - $16.99 A beautiful collection of looped and layered, dreamy, drony space-age ambient sonic landscapes and impressive vocal skills. A perfect headphone trip. Debut album of dreamy, drony sonic landscapes from Davide Tomat. ‘01-06 June’ is the debut album of Davide Tomat from Torino, Italy. It was created over a 6 day period in June 2010 in a series of solo real time improvisation sessions as multitrack recordings using only his voice, an analog monophonic sythesizer and a guitar through effects, loopers, computer and samplers to create multiple layers of voices, sythesizers and guitar. No overdubs were used. Each song is matched to an historical event that happened between the 1st and the 6th of June during human history: the invention of radio, the Montgolfier brothers’ first hot air balloon flight, the ill-fated Soyuz 11 space mission, the first comet to be photographed, the publication of Orwell’s ‘1984’ and others. The album is a beautiful collection of sparsely layered, dreamy, drony space-age ambient sonic landscapes, in which Tomat displays his impressive vocal skills. It’s a perfect headphone trip and and ideal soundtrack to explorations of outer (and inner) space. Davide Tomat has also released music under his other projects, N.A.M.B. and Niagara.

Sons Of The North is the much anticipated debut album by the United Kingdoms very own rock juggernaut BLACK SPIDERS. Quite literally ten tracks of galloping rock and thunderous roll, heads down, no nonsense, ear splintering, gut wrenching organic, melodic goodness. The record caps a riotous 2 years in which they released single (St. Peter) and two acclaimed EPs (‘Cinco Hombres, Diez Cojones’ and ‘No Goats in the Omen’). Live, they excelled – no, really – becoming the talk at toilets and bars at festival sites across Europe including Download, Sonisphere, High Voltage, Bloodstock, iTunes and OzzFest to headline dates and special guest slots - Ozzy Osbourne, Airbourne& Volbeat among them. During this time the airwaves have been mildly saturated with their sound – from BBC Radio1 and XFM’s respective rock shows who both had live sessions - to BBC 6Music, Kerrang Radio, Planet Rock and the Rock Radio network. With Scuzz TV, Kerrang TV and NME TV on the video front. Magazines and the international internets paid them compliments that would make most bands blush. Here’s a summary of the 2011 end of year polls : # 8 Metal Hammer Critics Choice Top 50 Albums : "We'd already known for a while that Black Spiders were one of the most brilliant British live bands around, so you can imagine our elation when we found out that they killed it on record as well. Sons Of The North was a blistering and faultless collection of some of the finest British rock anthems to be released since the Darkness dropped Permission To Land on us way back in 2003"

STRING DRIVEN THING - Live on the Foxtrot Tour (40th Anni-
versary)
FORMAT - CD LABEL - Ozit Records UPC - 811702013027 CATALOG # - OZITCD9012 LIST PRICE - $17.99 The classic early 70s String Driven Thing line up of Chris Adams guitar and vocals, Pauline Adams vocals and percussion, Colin Wilson bass, and Grahame Smith violin (Hamill/Van der Graaf) recorded on the Foxtrot Tour with Genesis. Frontman Chris Adams has suffered a spontaneous pneumothorax (collapsed lung) and is rushed to hospital, where Doctors recommend that he take four weeks rest to let his lung reflate. But unwilling to drop out of the impending tour, Chris elects for the alternative treatment which, in his words involved “watching a brace and bit being used to drill a hole through my chest”. 14 days later, and against doctors’ advice, the band took to the Rainbow stage and, although understandably not being quite at their best, in the following gigs, including Manchester Free Trade Hall where this recently unearthed recording was made, the band performed sets with such stunning energy that multiple encores became the norm. Just listen to the 16 minute version of Jack Diamond and Graham Smith’s incredible virtuosity as he swoops and weaves around the hypnotic groove of Chris’ guitar, Pauline’s percussion and Colin Wil-son’s subtly syncopated bass, and I think you’ll agree with me that Ozit has rediscovered a lost master-piece.

CHRIS OLLEY - A Streetcar Named Desire
FORMAT - CD LABEL - Long Distance Runner UPC - 5024545578423 CATALOG # - LLD20091CD LIST PRICE - $8.99 Debut solo album from Six.bySeven vocalist and songwriter Chris Olley. During Chris Olley’s time in Six.bySeven he had already released numerous albums under the monikers of ‘Twelve’ and ‘’Fuck me USA.’ These were largely experimental and instrumental albums but perhaps now the time had come to release something under his own name. “ It’s all very well making music, hiding behind a project or band name but when you do it under your own name it’s a completely different thing. To quote Neil Young, I had to at last go about making a solo album, ‘just to see if I could make one.’ " Chris went back to the start, quite literally, “I didn’t have a band and I was going to find it hard to convince new people to begin a new journey to travel down a road of rock n roll road of doom. I picked up an acoustic and tried to find out who I was within music, I didn’t really care if it was right or wrong, good or bad, it just had to be me, whatever that was.” Lyrically and musically this is an open and honest album with clearly defined song writing steeped in the traditions of American Folk, sometimes dreamy, sometimes tetchy, often feeling solemn and yearning but always cathartic.
BILLY CHILDISH AND SEXTON MING - Dung Beetle Rolls Again FORMAT - LP & Digital LABEL - Damaged Goods UPC - 5020422038714 CATALOG # - DAMGOOD387LP LIST PRICE - $20.99
Mister Childish (Buff Medways / Headcoats / Milkshakes) and Mister Ming (Diamond Gussets / Tasty Ones / TV Personalities) have been writing poetry, playing music and painting pictures together since 1979 when they formed Phyroid Press. Their work together, documented by several LP’s and 25 small press publications, is inspired by the early DaDaists, Edward Lear, Captain Beefheart and the literature of the absurd. The Guardian described their material as ‘An authentic output of creative play’ Billy and Sexton de-scribe it as ‘A smoking chimney stack that falls over and crushes your wife and kids’ Curiously both are true. This is their latest and final album, which follows on nicely from their last album ‘Here Come The Fleece Geese’ ten years ago in 2002. Similar in style to the last one, it reminds us of Peter Cook and Dudley Moore at their most diverse. A Compilation of all their early releases is also due out in late 2012.
THE JOHN MOORE ROCK AND ROLL TRIO - Roll Your Activator Vol 1 FORMAT - CD LABEL - Greaser 2000 UPC - 5065001805004 CATALOG # - GR2001CD LIST PRICE - $8.99
A primary school is a strange place to get one’s mojo back, but that’s exactly what happened to John Moore. Languishing in semi-retirement, mired in despair, and just a trifle bored, he was cajoled into performing at his daughter’s summer fete. Having run out of polite excuses as to why this might be rather difficult to achieve, a band of willing accomplices was hurriedly assembled to cure sugar-rushing tinies with some rocking pneumonia and a shot of rhythm and blues. A super group – of sorts came together containing the DNA of The Jesus and Mary Chain, Black Box Recorder, Lush, The Soledad Brothers (Ben Swank – now retired to Nashville) The Guardian Newspa-per, and a Lady who’d last trodden the boards with Rod Stewart at Wembley Stadium. The gig was a remarkable success and the band pledged to play a great deal more often. Fourteen months later The John Moore Rock And Roll Trio featuring The Loose Moorelles were at it again, this time for a slightly taller, differently intoxicated audience, in preparation for their two-day recording blitz the following weekend. Now with Loz Colbert of JAMC and Ride on drums the line up was complete.
