London based Needwant has encapsulated a clear vision of delivering quality through both the music and the package. Everything Needwant does has that rare conviction of care and attention which clearly shines throughout their compilation album catalogue. The label’s flagship Future Disco series has gone on to release five editions to date and become an admired barometer of House and Disco dance floors worldwide. In 2009 the collection was named was named iTunes Dance album of the year (the first time a compilation had taken the converted title) and Future Disco continues to be a growing force with not only albums capturing a burgeoning fan worldwide but also a network of events and radio shows across the globe. Each mix is cleverly edited and mixed by label head Sean Brosnan, while the unmixed disc provides the cream of the crop in modern disco sounds for DJs and collectors alike. Future Balearica, an offshoot of the Future Disco series has gained much critical acclaim and brings together an all together sunnier soundtrack, often defying genres but delivering stunning mixes that may touch on The XX, Animal Collective or Diskjokke along the way. Needwant’s success seems to have come from treating the compilation format as an art form, something often forgotten in these fast moving times. The first Back On Track album release is a perfect example. Taking the often overlooked classic New York record label Nu Groove and entrusting the young producer Nicholas to update, reinterpret and refresh it for today’s dance floor may have seemed like a risk but was anything but as it was named Resident Advisor’s and DJ Magazine’s top compilations of 2011.

In philosophy, aufheben is used by Hegel to explain what happens when a thesis and antithesis interact. Like most of us, Brent Knopf watches a lot of YouTube videos, only he’s not watching kittens playing piano. Rather, his tastes err on the more experimental side of things – like people who attempt perpetual motion machines using magnets. “I love that they’re trying to harness an endless supply of energy,” says the Ramona Falls frontman, “and that they go against conventional wisdom in the hopes of true discovery.”

Which is exactly what Knopf did last year, when he decided to quit the acclaimed art rock trio Menomena and devote his time to one epic, personal vision. “False freedom is the ratification of pre-rigged choices,” the musician paraphrases the philosopher Noam Chomsky, “while true freedom is the agency to shape the choices themselves.” But as Knopf is learning now with a full-time focus on a former side project, freedom comes with greater risk. Prophet, the second Ramona Falls album, is sonically, lyrically and thematically brighter. It’s also more organic and personal than anything he ever contributed to Menomena, or as the singer/multi-instrumentalist explains, “it’s more of a rapid transit line between my sleeve and my heart.” “With Ramona Falls I am exploring what I stand for which makes it more personal to me,” Knopf admits. “I’m less worried now about being made fun of, than I was before. I can now say things I believe in, and some people may think it’s stupid or cheesy... but that’s kind of fun. I would much rather speak from the heart than hide behind impenetrable obfuscation.” That emotional honesty and creative fearlessness is certainly paying off. Prophet is an album that recalls the experimental beauty of Laughing Stock by Talk Talk, and the unabashed earnestness of his old labelmates Death Cab For Cutie. Knopf appreciates those highly regarded comparisons but when pressed for the true inspirations that fed into his overall vision, he cites Martin Gore of Depeche Mode’s dark chordal elements, a production style halfway between Tears for Fears and the Homosexuals, and lyrical themes that channel a dyslexic Jorge Luis Borges if he starred in Flowers for Algernon. Recorded with bandmates Paul Alcott (drums, and also, ironically, Knopf’s replacement in Menomena), Matt Sheehy (guitar), and Dave Lowensohn (bass) and featuring guest appearances by four other friends, the stunning album begins with “Bodies of Water,” an emotive and rousing anthem about how intimacy bundles together both nourishment and peril. “Spore,” a heartfelt highlight of Prophet bears a substantive core: “I like the idea of someone refusing to feel lonely, despite how utterly alone they might actually be,” Knopf explains. “It’s a form of rebellion.” But the 11 tracks are not all exercises in introspective fragility; “Brevony” is Knopf’s most unleashed moment with gnarling guitars ambushing the listener at the chorus on all sides. Prophet, the album’s title, is an homage to Knopf’s religious upbringing, a titular reference to a worldview that reveres exalted seers who assert meaning despite the chaos. But as the newly empowered songwriter has discovered with Ramona Falls, it’s a better strategy to embrace the chaos. And then refashion it into a beautiful noise. Advance Base is the new musical project by Chicago, Illinois singer, songwriter, & producer Owen Ashworth (formerly of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone). A Shut-In's Prayer is Ashworth's fi rst full-length release in over three years, & his fi rst under the name Advance Base. Recorded at home & in piano practice rooms at the Chicago Public Library, A Shut-In's Prayer is an intimate collection of deliberately crafted but decidedly lo-fi torch songs, waltzes & ballads. Ashworth sings nostalgic stories about lost loves, childhood friends, estranged siblings, & hard feelings over simple drum machine rhythms & spare percussion. The arrangements that fi ll out these ten songs intertwine gentle electric & upright piano melodies, fi lling the spaces between plainly-sung harmony vocals & strummed autoharp chords, with the occasional creaking floorboard or snapping reverb spring to remind you of the cramped rooms where this album was recorded. It's a different sound than one might expect from the dude from Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, but Ashworth's keen ear for melody & idiosyncratic skill as a lyricist have only improved in recent years, pushing his memorable songwriting in all new directions. At age 35, Ashworth has a lot of music left in him, & he's just gett ing started again. Gravenhurst is the work of songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Nick Talbot from Bristol, England. Kwes has faired quite well in his 23 years - with production on early demos for The XX, followed by official remixes for Hot Chip and Zero 7, as well as having a big roll in the 2011 OXFAM benefit album for the Democratic Republic of Congo DRC Music. 'Free Pop' is the genre that Kwes describes his own compositions by, and it fits quite well. It is a philosophy of creating popular music that knows no bounds, shuns no eccentricity and values inventiveness over any kind of rules that came before. However, between the disco shuffle of "Bashful" and the lazily swaying "Honey", Kwes shows he can be quite the understated new-soul vocalist as well. Some will be drawn to the tape crackle, others to "Honey"'s springtime hooks, but Kwes' Meantime proves there is nothing wrong with being brought up on a strict diet of popular music, imagination and loads of talent.

Geoff Barrow is a founding member of Portishead and producer/label owner of INVADA records UK. Ben Salisbury is a soundtrack composer with over 200 film and TV credits to his name, including David Attenborough’s ‘Life of Mammals’, ‘Life in the Undergrowth’ and ‘Life in Cold Blood’. Barrow and Salisbury met over 10 years ago when they both joined a Bristol football team for old men. After many disastrous games they decided they might be more productive working on a music project together. Other work commitments kept them apart until late 2010, when the pair met up with a screenwriter to discuss some possible work on a feature film project. Although their involvement with this particular film didn’t continue, a collaborative writing relationship had begun… When Barrow and Salisbury revisited and started expanding upon this early material they decided to continue writing what was essentially soundtrack music. Barrow, along with album designer and long term friend, Marc Bessant, were both avid ‘2000AD’ readers from a young age, and the sprawling metropolis and classic stories of Mega-City One seemed the ideal inspiration for this ‘soundtrack’. Although Mega City One has been brought to life in great detail over many years by the acclaimed work of writers and artists alike, there is still huge scope for readers to have their own vision/soundtrack of the city. Rather than intending to be the definitive sound of Mega City One (could there be a ‘definitive sound’ of a city so vast, changeable and varied?), DROKK is Barrow and Salisbury’s personal, outsider’s’ interpretation. DROKK was written in a 6 month period between Barrow’s Portishead world tour and Salisbury’s composing jobs for the BBC. Even though it is a soundtrack of sorts, Barrow and Salisbury instinctively felt that music for MC1 should steer clear of the rich orchestration common to many contemporary film scores. Even for electronica the music is often purposefully stark and spare, with the majority of tracks created exclusively on the Oberhiem 2 Voice Synthesizer (a 1975 classic keyboard), and its onboard sequencer used to create rhythm and drums sounds . The only exceptions are a handful of tracks which combine the synth with digitally manipulated and time- stretched performances of acoustic instruments (such as piano, violin, mandolin, ukelele, voice and hammered dulcimer). There is also a brief cameo from Barrow’s other band BEAK. ‘2000 AD is delighted that Judge Dredd continues to inspire artists in the year of the character’s 35th anniversary, especially such high profile talents as Geoff and Ben. Tom Williams & The Boat have created an album that cements their roots and embraces a new chapter in the band’s history. The independent release - ‘Teenage Blood’ is a co-release between Moshi Moshi and Wire Boat Records, funded entirely by their fans through Pledge Music - and its interaction with fans as well as Tom’s intuitive storytelling reflect what’s come to be expected of the band. But in a new-found love of classic pop structures and dark, heartbreaking narrative styles, there’s something entirely different about the album’s approach. ! ‘Teenage Blood’ is made up of ten tracks that Tom says reflect a new sense of focus for the band. After becoming obsessed with the idols of pop-rock’s history, such as Tom Petty, Teenage Fanclub, The Band and Loaded-era Velvet Underground, Tom decided to write songs that take the traditional song structures of that genre – repeated choruses, catchy hooks – and fill them with a subversive lyricism, touched upon in the debut release. The result is a tight, narrative set of tracks that don’t so much form a concept as a series showing the progression of doomed love affairs – moving from youthful naïveté in ‘Too Young’ into ‘There’s A Stranger’s gut-punch realisation of the death of a romance (‘the best song I’ve ever written’, says Tom) and finally the ‘rolling credits’ of ‘Emily’, a depiction of the (re)birth of a new relationship. Teenage Blood’s consistent focus and narrative drive make for a more cohesive album than Too Slow; a mixture of the black and white polarity of their debut that explores new, captivating shades of grey the spaces in between pop and alternative music, love and hate. Tom Williams & The Boat’s spirit of independence, individuality and hard work drew celebrated indie label Moshi Moshi to the band. After seeing both their style of releasing and their constant interaction with their fans through social media sites, the label expressed an interest in not only releasing their second album, but in letting the band keep their sense of identity. Having worked with Summer Camp to release their debut through fan funding website PledgeMusic.com, Moshi Moshi saw an ideal opportunity to release The Boat’s second album whilst retaining the band’s personal touch. This has taken the form of a number of incentives offered for pledges towards the album’s creation, ranging from white label vinyl test pressings and unreleased demos to music lessons or even a painting by Tom (who has just completed a degree in Fine Art at Oxford). A portion of the money raised will be donated to the Kent Air Ambulance charity, an organisation particularly close to Tom’s heart and further validation of their independent standpoint. Strut follow up Trevor Jackson’s acclaimed ‘Metal Dance’ compilation of original industrial, post-punk and EBM (Electronic Body Music) gems with a 12” single featuring three essential cuts from the compilation, none of which feature on the LP edition. “We have picked three tracks from the compilation that are crying out for a loud cut on a 12”, explains Jackson, founder of the legendary Output label and man behind Playgroup. A-side ‘The Duke Arrives’ is taken from the cult ‘80s favourite ‘Escape From New York’ soundtrack, a pulsing, ominous synthscape by director John Carpenter and composer Alan Howarth. The rare edit featured here, originally released on an Italian 12” only, comes courtesy of Mario Boncaldo, one half of revered Italo electro duo, Klein & MBO. On the flip, we feature the machine funk of ‘Dream Games’, the B-side of the 1981 single ‘Dynamo Beat’ by performance artiststurned-singers, Shock. Produced by Richard James Burgess of Landscape, the track was originally released after the troupe had grown from regular gigs at London club Blitz to supporting Gary Numan at Wembley Arena. Continuing the New Romantic links, we also feature a dub of ‘Do What You Wanna Do’ by The Cage, the alter ego of Bitz club promoter and DJ, Rusty Egan. Featuring Labelle’s Nona Hendryx on vocals, this is a pounding, industrial take on T-Connection’s classic disco hit.

Even though it is a sound-track of sorts, Barrow and Salisbury instinctively felt that music for MC1 should steer clear of the rich orchestration common to many contemporary film scores. Even for electronica the music is often purposefully stark and spare, with the majority of tracks created exclusively on the Oberhiem 2 Voice Synthe-sizer (a 1975 classic keyboard), and its onboard sequencer used to create rhythm and drums sounds . The only exceptions are a handful of tracks which combine the synth with digitally manipulated and time- stretched performances of acoustic instruments (such as piano, violin, mandolin, ukelele, voice and hammered dulcimer). There is also a brief cameo from Barrow’s other band BEAK. ‘2000 AD is delighted that Judge Dredd continues to inspire artists in the year of the character’s 35th anniversary, especially such high profile talents as Geoff and Ben. They are the kind of songs that in the unlikely event that they woke up one morning as dogs would be muzzled, or at the very least made to wear one of those funny plastic cones around their heads to stop them chewing their own balls.” Back then they were a groovy, hip-shaking bastardization of the first Them album that’d been getting it on the Shadows of Knights and Count Five. Righteous, strip-me-naked-and-paint-me FUZZRAWK was their thing! But in the last couple of years they’ve been hanging out in late-’60s Texas, eating peyote and dropping acid, watching the Golden Dawn and the Thirteenth Floor Elevators, getting an itch to stick a toe into the new, happening sounds whilst still not wanting to move too far out of the garage. Taking their earlier proto-punk MC5 / Stooges sound they’ve chucked in some acid tabs of psychedelia to come up with a second album that will out perform their debut. The playing is tight throughout, with hard, bluesy licks and fuzzed-out guitars battling with distorted, spacey vocals. Forget whoever is flavour of the month right now. Just listen to this and you know that they really f*cking mean it. This is a truly thrilling 21st-century take on the most primitive and visceral sixties garage-psych but way too raw and and punkedout for it to be considered retro or a mere period piece. Built from drum machines, analogue keyboards and 303s, and edited in the computer, these three lean and mean tracks have an un-adorned feeling that build on Hyperdub’s love for old John Carpenter style electronics, combined with Dr Patrick Gleason’s ear for the abstract, and bouncy drum machine syncopation that sounds like they’re aiming for an alternative present where analogue synths are still king. ‘Chasing Rainbows’ is first off, with a dark tone that reminds of the opening theme to the film ‘Escape From New York’, a wavering 303 bassline and tough kicks and snares giving away to heavy, moody chords. ‘The Chase’ works rough rolling drum machine beats that stutter and build into strange fills that threaten to stop the track dead if it wasn’t for the odd stumbling bassline and gently building acid line that resolve into a super funky melodic duel with some stuttering synth strings. ‘Liloo’s Seduction’ is intense, quiet and abstract; a flickering 303 bass line is joined by barely there drums and reflective keys, everything shimmering in a dramatic fashion with gentle echoes giving the track a deep, watery sense of perspective as each part gently and gracefully builds and twists into a tender and effecting melody.

However both ‘Magic Happens’ and ‘Comes The Night’ brim with a sense of effortless melody that kinda reminds us of The Nerves or something, brash, infectious, FUN… all the everything that a fine pop song should be. These songs will lodge themselves into your brain…in the best possible way. ‘Magic Happens’ and ‘Come The Night’ were written and recorded throughout the Summer 2011 in his hometown of Worcester with Shaun performing everything on there (except drums). Peter Broderick is like the Swiss Army Knife of musicians; compact, elegant, multipurpose. What sets him apart is his restraint. With an arsenal of talents at his disposal, he prefers to reveal only one or two at a time. With Home, Broderick may have performed his most impressive feat yet: breathing new life into the most pedestrian arrangement in modern music. He turns the open-mic night connotations of guitar and vocal on its ear with layers of vocal washes, x-acto finger-picking figures, and his deceptively simple compositional style. You’d think working with as many as five different bands in recent history (Efterklang, Horse Feathers, She & Him, Loch Lomond and Norfolk & Western) simultaneously wouldn’t allow Peter to pursue any kind of solo career. Likewise, his easygoing, unassuming demeanor might lead you to believe he didn’t have aspirations being accessible and available to lend a musical hand. But in late 2007 a steady stream of solo instrumental releases on respected labels Type and Kning Disk has all but established Broderick as the young composer / pianist / string player to watch. Home is a collection of folk songs recorded at the end of 2007 and beginning of 2008. In late 2007, Peter Broderick toured all around Europe with the Danish ensemble Efterklang, playing violin with them, and opening the shows as a solo act. His recorded work up to this time had been primarily instrumental, but as he began to play live shows, he discovered he also had a passion for singing. And so, when he had a break from touring at the end of the year, he set out to make an album that was the opposite of his other instrumental, piano and string based recordings. With Home he has made and album with neither of these instruments. The result is an album based around layers and layers of vocals, and guitars. Recorded in various places in various parts of the world, it is an album about finding a home. Written, performed, recorded, and produced by Peter himself, and mixed with his good friend and sound wizard from Efterklang, Mads Brauer.

Limited edition, 180 gram vinyl Germany’s The Blue Angel Lounge follow up their 2010 album Narcotica with the intense and brooding 4 track EP titled, Ewig (german for Eternal). The past year has seen the band tour extensively throughout Europe and America, with a breakthrough performance at 2011s Austin Psych Festival: „The Blue Angel Lounge could have easily pulled off a headlining spot. Their performance was certainly one of the most beautiful that we heard at Austin Psych Fest.” – The Austinist. Their ascent continues with their invitation to support the Brian Jonestown Massacre on their US tour in April and May. Founded in 2006 by Nils O. and Dennis 'Mel' Melster, the band completed their self-titled debut in 2008, of which 500 vinyl copies were self-released. One of the copies made it into the hands of Will Carruthers of Spacemen 3, who subsequently passed it on to a friend at 8MM Musik. The band were signed shortly after. An appearance at the UK's Dream Machine Festival in 2008 led to the track 'The God', from their debut, being included on the UK neo-psych compilation 'Open Your Mind', later pronounced DIY Compilation Of The Week by the BBC in 2009 . Following their first ever show in Berlin in 2009, Anton Newcombe was impressed enough to offer to help with production, and, with his studio wizardry and the band's already stellar songwriting and musical talent, 'Narcotica' was recorded in under two weeks.

Micah Blue Smaldone/Big Blood split LP Big Blood is Caleb Mulkerin and Colleen Kinsella. The two have been making music together for around ten years. Today they live together and make “stuff” at home in South Portland, Maine, usually between the hours of 8pm and 3am, while their daughter is sleeping. Since November of 2006 they have released a steady stream of CDr and cassette albums mostly on their own label Donttrusttheruin, as well as releases on Phase! Recordings, Peasant Magik, L’animaux Tryst, and Cabin Floor Esoterica. In 2010 Big Blood released Dead Songs, (their most widely available album) on Time-Lag Records. Previous to Big Blood Colleen and Caleb were long time members of Cerberus Shoal and are total fixtures of the Portland, Maine musical landscape.

Micah Blue Smaldone is a singing guitar player, who lived and made music in the same South Portland home as Big Blood for 8 years before moving to the northern extremities of Maine. He has released four solo albums so far – Some Sweet Day (2004), Hither and Thither (2005), and Live in Belgium (2006) on North East Indie Records and The Red River (2008), on Immune Recordings. He is currently working on another. Micah has played in several New England bands and collaborated with folks like Death Vessel and Jack Rose. Big Blood and Micah Blue Smaldone have previously worked together in the group Fire on Fire, who released an album on Young God Records titled The Orchard (2008). At the request of Immune Recordings, Big Blood and Micah have combined their efforts again to share this LP.
