On May 15, two-time Grammy nominated soul man Ryan Shaw and Dynotone Records will release Real Love, the follow-up to his acclaimed debut This Is Ryan Shaw. Called “a massive talent” by Billboard and “first-class” by Entertainment Weekly, the success of the New York-based singer's debut led to appearances on The Ellen Show, the CBS Early Show, a pair of Grammy nominations for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance, and opening slots for John Legend, Joss Stone, and even Van Halen, where Ryan silenced arenas with the power of his voice. Produced by veteran Jimmy Bralower (Eric Clapton, Hall & Oates) and Johnny Gale (Ronnie Spector), each song on Real Love explores a different side of love, from the emotional to the spiritual. The horn blasts and gospel hollers on “Karina” envelops take-me-back heartbreak through the church choir, while the Jerry Ragovoy gem “You Don't Know Nothing About Love” delivers goose bump-inducing vocal gymnastics. From rockers like “That Is Why,” the simmering funk of “Can’t Hear The Music,” to slow grooves like “Evermore” and “Morning Noon & Night,” Real Love runs the gamut of classic American Soul Music, all with a modern twist, featuring Shaw’s extraordinary vocals. Guest appearances by Robert Randolph, Al Kooper, and the Soul Survivors help cook up what Ryan calls “a gumbo infused with soul, rock and two tablespoons of gospel.”

“I’ve started thinking about pure electronic music again. Something very melodic, very aggressive” – Squarepusher

5.15.2012 WARPCD228/X | WARPLP228X

"Jenkinson has returned to his roots as a mind-blowing electronic music producer" – XLR8R Squarepusher has designed his latest LP as the next stage in his iconic lineage and as an awe inspiring live show. From the inception of Ufabulum, he has worked simultaneously on sound and picture. The project features a development of a longstanding aspect of his live work since 2005, the bespoke "video-synthesiser" that generates imagery according to control data and audio input. Custom designed himself, the imagery for each piece has two components, one represented on a large LED screen and the other on a screen mounted on a helmet worn by Squarepusher. The formats for Ufabulum are as special as the show. Presented as a Limited Edition Deluxe Vinyl release, the 2xLP comes boxed and decorated in glow-in-the-dark ink and individually sleeved with a 12 page 12” booklet, album download card and three track CD EP, Enstrobia. A Limited Edition CD version (only available for indie retail) also includes the Enstrobia CD, bundled in two digipaks, bound by an O card. The regular CD version and Limited Edition come with a 12 page booklet featuring art from the live performance.

Hometown: Wakefield, West Yorkshire UNITED KINGDOM ABOUT Originally hailing from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, UK, The Cribs, the all Jarman brother three piece, expand their catalog with the upcoming release of their fifth studio album. The band enlisted Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, MGMT, Mercury Rev) and Steve Albini (Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Pixies) to produce the relentless yet blissfully sonic endeavor. Early stand outs “Chi-Town,” which the NME calls “...a pressure cooker of stomping riffs and broad sea shanty melodies” and “Come On, Be A No-One,” have been received with overwhelming and unanimous praise. The band headline and sell out 5k capacity venues in the UK, where they have built up a rabidly devoted fanbase over the past 10 years. Their previous album, Ignore The Ignorant, entered the UK charts in the top ten. They have previously been invited to support such infamous acts as The Sex Pistols and Aerosmith. Andre Williams & The Sadies Night & Day

NATIONAL release date: CD/lp: 05.15.2012 Canada's finest live band, The Sadies, have reunited with explicit soul singer/cult legend Andre Williams for Night & Day, set for release May 15, 2012 on Yep Roc records. Night & Day is the result of sessions that began in 2008 at Key Club Studio in Detroit and captures Andre, then 70 years old and still using at the time, at his most raw, honest, and immediate. No filter. Andre is aided by a stellar cast of musical friends, dirty bluesers who have earned the trust of the ancient hustler, including Jon Spencer (who directed these sessions) and Matt Verta-Ray of Heavy Trash, Danny Kroha of Detroit's own gutter-blues superheroes, The Gories, the unsinkable Mekon, Jon Langford, and of course, behind it all, The Sadies' long-time line-up of Dallas Good on guitars and keys, his brother Travis Good on guitars and fiddle, Mike Belitsky on drums, and the mighty Sean Dean on the bass. The result is a raw, gritty slice of raunch rock that has attitude in spades and the hooks and playing to back it up. Night & Day, indeed. There is wisdom in these grooves. “Andre Williams is one of the great treasures of modern American music. A true original, he has never compromised in his art. As a result he has at times suffered the slings and arrows of career misfortune and critical misunderstanding. The fact that Andre could overcome illness, addiction and legal problems to make this new album with Canada's country ambassadors The Sadies, a record so raw, immediate, and powerful, speaks volumes to this great man's talents. It was an honor to once again work alongside Mr. Williams." -Jon Spencer

Eleven Eleven (Expanded edition) NATIONAL release date: 3xCD/dvd: 05.15.2012

"Starting in May 2011, my great band, The Guilty Ones and I hit the highways blasting and rocking our blues in every bar, theatre and joint that we could get into across America. Some of 'em we even hit twice! As you might guess, I love playing with this band and I think it shows in the live performance that was recorded last summer (2011) at The Ark in Ann Arbor. We were in Cincinnati the night before we taped this show, and we were in Chicago the night after, so this is a document of one night (mistakes, sweat and all) traveling down the endless interstate. I'm happy to be able to release this to you on DVD in a new swanky package of Eleven Eleven (expanded edition), complete with three previously unreleased songs from that album's sessions. I hope you enjoy the music and I look forward to seeing you soon somewhere down the road.” - Dave Alvin The Dave Alvin Eleven Eleven Expanded Edition includes: • The Original Eleven Eleven Digipak • 2 Unreleased Bonus Tracks from the Original Recording Session • 1 Unreleased Song featured on FX's Hit Television Show Justified • 1 Live Disc Recorded on the Official Eleven Eleven US Tour at the Ark in Ann Arbor, MI • 1 DVD of Live Footage Featuring Dave Alvin and The Guilty Ones Live at the Ark in Ann Arbor, MI • Over Three Hours of Music • Digital Versions for All Tracks • All Contained in a Unique Slip Case Hardcover Box

C O U P O N F OR M P 3 DO WNLO AD

You know that little something you’ve been missing but can’t quite wrap your noodle around what in the world it could be? This is something of an epidemic here in sunny Bushwick Brooklyn, and if the fan mail and phone calls don’t deceive, which they never do – this is happening worldwide folks. But don’t waste another second pondering this proverbial hole in your SOUL, because Daptone has the solution. After years of research, 10 to be exact, it came to our attention that everyone’s favorite funky instrumentalists, The Sugarman 3 hadn’t released a new LP in some time. Well, of course!!! How could we have been so neglectful to our fans? Within hours of this epiphany Daptone Brass had the boys back in the studio. With only 8 tape tracks, a handful of peanuts, and a bottle of high proof Dutch Schnapps these gentlemen flexed their musical maturity – writing and tracking the entire album in 4 days. There were tears shed, and blood spilled over those four fateful sessions, but we’re happy to report that what went down is some of the finest instrumental tunes ever laid to tape. Dig the masterful renditions of favorites such as: The Bacharach penned opus, and title track of the album “What the World Needs Now Is Love.” - Quite a fitting title considering this record is practically saving the world from incomplete-itis. As well as JJ Jackson’s SOUL classic “It’s Alright” – and for all you Bean Town enthusiasts, “Dirty Water” by the Standells (take it easy Mr. + Mrs. Know-it-alls, we know they’re from LA). And if that ain’t enough to make you wanna Boogaloo down Troutman St, surely their newly crafted originals will have your tail feathers shakin’ all over. KEY SELLING POINTS:

Delicate Steve P O S I T I V E

F O R C E

Delicate Steve’s debut album Wondervisions was critically hailed across the board-from a lead review in The New York Times, to NPR, to blogs like Stereogum and The Fader. The record made a minor ripple… but those who heard it fell in love with it. It made NPR’s year end list, and made Delicate Steve a favorite among a cadre of bands including Yeasayer, Ra Ra Riot, Akron Family, and Dirty Projectors - many of whom either brought the band on the road with them, or went out of their way to turn folks on to the burgeoning instrumental unit. Positive Force explodes the promise of Wondervisions. A response to taking a bedroom record out into the world and performing in front of large crowds, Positive Force is a much bigger record sonically than the debut. What is becoming a signature command of melody- that thing that allows you to sing these wordless songs out loud, and rejoice while doing it- is front and center here. Positive Force is a world unto itself. Written, recorded, and mixed by Delicate Steve’s namesake Steve Marion, it’s a record that wraps itself around you and brings it to its own place. Listen to it now.

Marketing points: • First single ‘Afria Talks to You’ premiered by Steregoum. Expect early support from major blogs including NPR, Stereogum, Fader, BrooklynVegan. • Expect viral support from artists including Yeasayer, Ra Ra Riot, Tune Yards, Akron Family, Javelin, etc. Many of these artists will be remixing album tracks with service to blogs. • Summer tour to include festivals, TuneYards support, headliners, etc. • Debut record had support from NPR, World Café, NY Times, Spin, more. We expect more support on this coming record. • Press: Big Hassle • Radio: Sanford and Co. • Internet and Street Marketing: We Will Make This Happen Key Markets: New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Philadelphia Details: Street Date: May 15, 2012 Genre: Rock Label: Luaka Bop Cat#: CD-LBOP 0081 List price CD: $13.99 UPC CD: 6 80899 0081-2-9 Box Lot: 30 Packaging: Digipak Cat#: LP-LBOP-0081 Packaging: LP Jacket List price LP: $19.99 UPC LP: 6 80899 0081-1-2 Box Lot: 25

ALABAMA SHAKES in

APRIL

STREET DATE 5/15/12 “The band’s combination of rock, punk, soul and country is typical of the sound that comes out of the Quad Cities, an area in North Alabama rich with musical talent going back to the 1960’s.” – Dead Journalist “The Birmingham, Alabama group takes the gospel music of their youth and reinvents it through a punk rock lens, resulting in a commanding set of impassioned songs steeped in Southern influences. There is a Bomb in Gilead – which is a lyric of a traditional spiritual about the salvation of the soul through Christ (the “balm”, not “bomb”) that Bains misheard as a child – incorporates some of the most iconic regional styles of American music, from Muscle Shoals to Detroit garage rock to delta blues of Mississippi. “ – Record Dpt. In 2008, shortly after returning to Birmingham from college in NY, Lee Bains fell in with the Dexateens, a Tuscaloosa institution whose raggedy union of cock-eyed rebel pride and forward-thinking fury proved to be the perfect apprenticeship for a confused Southern boy. After Bains had played with the band for a couple or three years, a couple or three hundred shows, the Dexateens came to a reluctant end. Bains found himself off the road, back in Birmingham, without a band. He also found himself with a passel of powerful songs. Casting his nets in central Alabama’s rock’n’roll clubs, Bains assembled the Glory Fires: drummer Blake Williamson, bass player Justin Colburn, and guitar player Matt Wurtele. There is a Bomb in Gilead is the band’s debut album. Jazzanova - Funkhaus Studio Sessions with Band & Paul Randolph Jazzanova producers (Stefan Leisering & Axel Reinemer) went into the studio with their 7 piece live band with Paul Randolph on vocals to record a 14 track set. Whoever had the chance to see Jazzanova play live during the last three years knows how magical this experience can be. The Berlin based outfit transports the richness and sublimity of their productions (own compositions and remixes) perfectly on stage. And it adds this extra twist to the performance which makes the music even more tangible and human. In last November the 2 producers of Jazzanova (Stefan Leisering & Axel Reinemer) & the original Jazzanova touring band (see below for full line up) brought the spirit of their extensive worldwide tour to the studio to record a typical live set - this time with proper recording gear and state-of-art engineering equipment though. The „Funkhaus Studio Sessions“ marks Jazzanova‘s third album release. Including the songs the band learned to love the most on tour over the last three years as well as the audience‘s favourites: From their initial breakthrough smash „Fedime‘s Flight“ to „Look What You‘re Doin To Me“ off the „Of All The Things“ album from 2008 and renditions and interpretations of Jazzanova remixes (f.e. the remix for Fat Freddy‘s Drop‘s „Flashback“). The 14 track strong set also includes a brand new tune with „I Human“, co-written by vocalist and bass player Paul Randolph, a constant member of the live band and now of course the voice of the „Funkaus Studio Sessions“. An album that will please every hardcore Jazzanova fan and every true music lover with an affinity for warm, soulful, deep and genuine musicianship. When have you last heard a studio album so alive, fleshly, organic and solid at the same time? It captures the feel of a live recording but without any flaws due to poor recording equipment or sound aesthetics. The sessions at the legendary GDR Rundfunk Orchestra studios in East Berlin have also been filmed. Check out the accompanying video to „I Human“ for some of its footage. With „Funkhaus Studio Sessions“ Jazzanova will take you and their music to the next stage. The musicians involved in this recording: Paul Randolph (Vocals), Arne Jansen (Guitar), Carl Michael Grabinger (Drums), Sebastian Studnitzky (Keys), Sebastian Borkowski (Sax/Flute), Stefan Ulrich (Trombone), Paul Kleber (Bass), Axel Reinemer (Electronics / Percussion), Stefan Leisering (Congas, Synths, Ampli-Celeste). Greg Feldwick is 23 years old and from Bath. He makes noises as Slugabed. His first releases were on Stuff, Ramp and then Planet Mu but now he is signed to the mothership, Ninja Tune. His music is suffused with a unique mix of humour, next level production, dancefloor smarts and melancholic emotion. “Time Team” is his debut album and we think it’s a belter. The album opens with “New Worlds", a heroic trudge across a vast space landscape, followed by the single “Sex”, a place of wildly suggestive synth squelch. He then takes us deeper, delving into the disembodied anime of “All This Time” and on to “Moonbeam Rider” which combines digital lyncanthropy with a kind of deep funk groove that ought to come with a warning label. Along with the nervous squeals of "Travel Sweets" and the widescreen spangling of “Unicorn Suplex” this is a record that evokes a very particular, very peculiar, but never less than beautiful worldview. An album highlight is “Mountains Come of The Sky”, which has a wonderful rolling rhythm and uplifting vocal, whilst the synth melody goes stratospheric at the mid-point. “Grandma Paints Nice,” distills yet more warmth and emotion from supposedly synthetic sounds, and “Climbing A Tree” sounds like the slow and wonderful death of a computer clinging on to its last, implanted false memory. Crowning the album, electro jam "Earth Claps" takes you on a field trip to the very core of the earth, melts you down and spits you out of a volcano. Lastly, the mood of dislocated melancholy is pushed almost to a nervous breakdown on the closing track “It’s When The Future Falls Plop On Your Head”. Asked to explain “Time Team,” Feldwick responds that “it's to do with deep feelings about mostly inexpressible things.” It is indeed an album full of feeling and warmth and humor, a remarkable feat for a record composed mainly on synthesisers and drum machines. You will be hearing a lot more of Slugabed.

ARTIST: Nickodemus feat. feat MC's Edd Fareeq, L'Atrash, Yaseen, Malikan & Ram6 L'Hamora TITLE: A Beirut Minute LABEL: Wonderwheel Recordings ITEM NUMBER: WONDER‐36 BOX LOT: 7” VINYL – 50 LIST PRICE: $5.99 Tracklisting A – A Beirut Minute B – A Beirut Minute (Instrumental) Nickodemus’ first musical love has been hip‐hop – in large part because of hip‐hop’s ability to convey a poignant social commentary through lyrics and production. This is what drew him and Justin Carty together to form the project “A New York Minute,” released in May 2011 to critical acclaim. The project brought together the top talent in New York City’s underground hip‐hop culture The Real Live Show, Rabbi Darkside & iLLspokinN – as well as legendary MC Sadat X (Brand Nubian) to do a track and video inspired by the uprisings in the Arab world, the Wisconsin labor strikes & the possibility of the same tipping point in NYC. Nickodemus and Carty always envisioned a continuation of the "A New York Minute "to be “A Global Minute” and the opportunity presented itself in September of 2011 when a musical DJ collective The Beirut Groove Collective, and Jembe Music invited Nickodemus to Beirut – one of the cities most associated with the turbulence of modern Middle East history and a city that has held a special place in hip‐hop lore for decades. The hub of the burgeoning Arab hip‐hop movement, Beirut has gone largely unnoticed as the uprisings in the Middle East have taken on despots, dictators and monarchs with unflinching bravery and ingenuity. Beirut’s fight, however, is one that represents Arab struggles on many fronts. “A Beirut Minute” video/song will help illustrate why Lebanon is a country still recovering from a devastating 1975‐ 1990 Civil War and more recently the War versus Israel in 2006, despite it being a top tourist destination over the last 3 years. Through A Beirut Minute people will be viewing Beirut through the lyrical talents of four of the finest Arab MCs on the scene today including, Edd Fareeq l’Atrash, Yaseen, Malikah (who’s worked with everyone from Nate Dogg to Cheb Mami) & Ram6 l’Hamorabi, rhyming over a raw 70’s style drum‐break & flipping to a Middle‐ Eastern Tarab‐sampling Hip‐hop beat. Vocal version & an instrumental included.

“sic - used in brackets after a copied or quoted word that appears odd or erroneous to show that the word is quoted exactly as it stands in the original” It’s pretty hard to walk your own path in rap music this late in the day, to remain true to where you’re from and to the roots of the music you love while honouring your own intelligence and creating something original. On his debut album, “[sic],” twenty one year old Elliott Egerton achieves just that. Slamming together a raw mix of contemporary sounds that he describes as “punk-donk-dub-hip-hop,” then colliding this with the mercurial, hard-hitting brilliance of his lyricism, Egerton has made a debut album which sounds both true and new. We could, in true press release style, run you through some of the songs on the album and tell you what to think about them. We would, in all honesty, prefer you just to listen, with the lyric sheet we’ve provided close at hand. Egerton treats music and lyrics much the same. He picks through the detritus of modern pop culture, politics, youth culture, copious drug references and hip hop history and from it he fashions outlandish, stoned and aggravated, misshapen beats and quick-witted, cunning lyrics which often mean exactly the opposite of what they say, metaphors piled one on top of another, so you’re sure he’ll trip as he skips through them (he never does). Take “Your Gay,” for instance (even the misspelling in the title a deliberate pun). On the surface this dark epic is a low joke, when in fact – without completely excusing himself and certainly without preaching – he lands sly blows on the kind of man who “prefers it grey, though/ Gets nervous and uncomfortable when he sees a rainbow.” This is a very different Liverpool to the chirp-scouse tradition established by the Beatles and paid loving homage to by successive generations of Mersey-based musicians. Instead, Egerton strings together image- and punladen tales of drink, drugs, the DSS, machismo, petty crime and quiet desperation, though never without a lyrical sting in the tail: “these snot nosed kids trying to tease police/ thinking breaching the peace is a beast/ sleeping on each other’s three piece suites in the week/ fleece beak for their keep, beat their meat, and repeat just to keep them sweet,/ the real five a day, don't know where they're getting off thinking crime will pay” (new single, “Fars Yer Whop”). Bang On! first appeared on BBC radio when he was just twelve years old (on the tune “Pass The Mic,” as Young L). He was featured on the cover of the late, lamented Hip Hop Connection when he was only seventeen, alongside the likes of Roots Manuva and Skinny Man. Although he’s young, this debut album has been a long time coming. Through talking honestly (and funnily) about himself and his life, the contradictions, the problems as well as the transitory highs, Bang On! paints a portrait of his city and through that, a portrait of his country and of a moment in time. He could’ve made a play to be the next “next British Eminem.” Instead, he’s made a play to be himself.

"A distinct lyrical identity... Smart, ferocious and with an ear for bowel-shattering beats." The Guardian Redeye Distribution, 449-A Trollingwood Rd Haw River, NC 27258 USA Contact: Lori Miller - lori@redeyeusa.com www.redeyeusa.com

GENRE : ROCK/EXPERIMENTAL FILE UNDER: “M” Man Forever “O” Oneida John Colpitts (aka Kid Millions) is a Brooklyn-based multi- RELEASE DATE : May 15, 2012 instrumentalist, composer and writer who is perhaps best known NO EXPORT as the drummer for Oneida. Man Forever, his vehicle for exploring TRACK LISTING:

the outer limits of drum performance, was created to overwhelm, to investigate the nuances that bloom in the midst of repetitive music, and to act as a pure sound experience. Originally based on the idea of creating a sort of punk-infused Metal Machine Music for drums, Man Forever has evolved from a five or six full drum set ensemble to something a lot more stripped down. Based on two drummers playing single stroke rolls on a single drum and the patterns that emerge from that, Pansophical Cataract is propulsive without a pulse. Patterns evolve and burst through the static surface of the material, much of which was produced by electric instruments, though “Ur Eternity” remains mostly drums with only a few bass tracks making an appearance. The sounds created by these instruments were based on the drones that Colpitts hears when he is practicing (the not fully conscious singing or humming that arises when one practices alone), and then augmented and enhanced by the other musicians on the record. The repetitive rolls create a phasing effect, a music in and of itself, and the dynamic shifts that occur when the other instruments enter become not mere notes, but grand events. In the live environment, these shifts and phasing effects, are amplified through sheer volume and duration. “Surface Patterns” and “Ur Eternity” are 30 and 40 minutes respectively (though have been shortened to around 18 minutes per side on record), creating an even more dramatic effect. Past performances have included Brian Chase (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), James McNew (Yo La Tengo), Chris Baio (Vampire Weekend), Richard Hoffman (Sightings), Shahin Motia (Oneida, Ex Models), Sarah Richardson (Creeping Nobodies), Ryan Sawyer (Stars Like Fleas), Greg Fox (Liturgy, Guardian Alien), Christopher Weingarten (Parts and Labor), and many others. Pansophical Cataract can be likened to watching Niagara Falls. You can’t expect to see every drop of water that crests over the ridge, but you are overwhelmed with the shear scale of the thing, and therein lies the aspiration for this record. Dive right in.

In the late 1990s he booked the Knitting Factory in Manhattan, and by playing in more bands than even he can easily keep track of — as well as working at Oneida’s recording studio and operating its record label, Brah — Kid Millions has become a ubiquitous force in a constantly changing scene.” - The New York Times

GENRE : POP/PSYCH FILE UNDER: “T” Tucker, Alexander RELEASE DATE : May 15, 2012 British avant pop artist Alexander Tucker releases his much anticipated new TRACK LISTING:

album, Third Mouth, on Thrill Jockey. This album builds on the strengths revealed by his landmark debut for the label, Dorwytch (Thrill 265) released in April 2011, culminating in his finest work to date.

Using songs written over a 12 month period he achieves his own inimitable blend of psych rock and ambient pop using a variety of studio crafted effects, rudimentary beats, guitar and bass, as well as synth and cello drones. He pushes himself even further however as he breaks new ground on the electronics only track “Rh” and heads further out into the deeper reaches of space with the sci-fi influenced cosmic meditation “Andromeon” as well as experimenting with more progressive song structures like those in “The Glass Axe”. Tucker’s sound has developed over the years since his first self-titled solo album, which featured acoustic finger-picking, experimental electronics and was released on Jackie O Motherfucker’s U-Sound Archives label. He went on to combine compositional song structures, drones, layered vocals and improvisations on his 2005 album Old Fog released on ATP Recordings. This collection of spectral moods, eerie landscapes and fragile emotions was followed by Furrowed Brow (2006) and Portal (2008), where the songs and melodies became more pronounced, whilst infecting the tracks with underlying drone currents, traditional finger-picking, doom riffs and David Crosby inspired harmonies. There was a shift in direction away from improvisation and toward scored pop music for Dorwytch (2011) with its nods to Brian Eno’s Another Green World, while still retaining the organic drones of Cluster and Lichens. In addition to being a solo artist Tucker continues to collaborate with Daniel Beban in their tape loop project Imbogodom - the pair released their second Thrill Jockey album And They Turned Not When They Went in January 2012. His other bands include Grumbling Fur with members of Guapo and Circle and past collaborative projects include duets with Stephen O’Malley on his Ginnungagap side project and the larger Decomposed Orchestra. Tucker is also a visual artist, creating artwork for all of his album covers and side projects, including ongoing paintings drawings, and comic artwork.

GENRE : PSYCH/EXPERIMENTAL FILE UNDER: “P” Plankton Wat “E” Eternal Tapestry Plankton Wat is the solo guise of Dewey Mahood, known for his work RELEASE DATE : May 15, 2012 in Eternal Tapestry, Gärden Söund (w/Barn Owl), Edibles, Blood- NO EXPORT biker, and Jackie-O Motherfucker. Spirits is Plankton Wat’s debut multi-format release, following an LP release on DNT and many sold out cassettes and CDrs on imprints such as Sloow Tapes, Digitalis, Blackest Rainbow, Sweat Lodge Guru and Stunned. Plankton Wat brings together Mahood’s many influences - kosmische drones, spiritual improvisation, burnt out psych, and sun baked folk.

Raised in rural Northern California, and calling Portland, OR home since the early 90s, Mahood has spent his life dedicated to the outsider fringe of experimental music. Early bands like Ungutta, and Kino-Eye explored DIY punk and free improv, while Elephant Factory (with Larry Crane of Tape-Op magazine fame) took on avant guitar rock in the tradition of Mission of Burma. Mahood’s music has gradually moved into the dark realm of psychedelia first traced in early 2000’s bands The Cosmos Group, and Scuffle & Dustcough, both of which borrowed from late 60’s San Francisco acid rock. Upon meeting Nick Bindeman and forming Eternal Tapestry in 2005 there has been no looking back. In recent years Mahood has also worked with Barn Owl in the project Gärden Söund, drenched his music in dub with Edibles, blasted hardcore punk with Bloodbiker, and laid down the bass groove with Jackie-O Motherfucker. Spirits, the Plankton Wat debut for Thrill Jockey, takes these diverse experiences and creates a record of soaring exploration and raw beauty. The album is intended as a meditation on the Pacific Northwest environment - the dramatic landscape of the Cascades, high desert, rugged coastline, and ever changing sky. Recorded throughout 2011 on 4-track cassette in Mahood’s basement, Spirits traces a year of changing seasons, feelings, and emotions. Inspired by the “universal music” of Don Cherry and Alice Coltrane, the album uses a variety of instruments including electric and acoustic guitar, bass, hand drums (played by Dusty Dybvig (Edibles, Horse Feathers) on the title track), synthesizer, harmonium, banjo, cymbals, drum machine, and voice in a layered approach reminiscent of Sandy Bull and Brian Eno. Both a celebration of the magical possibilities of life, and a contemplative look into the darkness, Spirits creates a warm blanket of sound perfect for watching the sunset from a high coastal sand dune. Exotic and esoteric as the ancient city of Angkor Wat which Plankton Wat takes its name, this is future primitive music for mental escapism.

David Daniell and Douglas McCombs Versions Thrill - 291 Limited 2xLP $22.99 BOX LOT LP 20 Vinyl is non-returnable

*90377-ACJBBg

GENRE : ROCK/EXPERIMENTAL FILE UNDER: “D” Daniell, David “M” McCombs, Douglas RELEASE DATE : May 15, 2012 NO EXPORT David Daniell and Douglas McCombs’s first collaborative LP, TRACK LISTING: Sycamore (Thrill 216, 2009), was assembled from seven hours of in-studio improvisations. Daniell and McCombs sifted through the material looking for their favorite moments, then combined, cross faded, mixed, and matched those moments into something that made sense to them as a long player. For their new release, the double LP Versions, they gave the same seven hours of material to noted recording engineer and producer Bundy K. Brown (ex-Tortoise), who was given free rein to assemble an LP of his choosing (subject to approval, of course). The results are fantastic. Brown has chosen to highlight moments in the music that the normally reserved Daniell and McCombs probably would not have chosen. There’s a wider dynamic range on Versions, from brutally raw to delicate to practically inaudible. The other interesting aspect is that Brown’s selections rarely cross over with the material on Sycamore--this is in no way a “remix,” and that is exactly what Daniell and McCombs were hoping for. In addition, Versions includes a second LP of two live performances. These were chosen to show how Daniell and McCombs’s music develops in a live setting. Improvising in a recording studio and improvising in front of an audience are two vastly different things. Montreal and Knoxville were two of Daniell and McCombs’s favorite performances from their tours together. Over the years Daniell has collaborated with many notable musicians, including Loren Connors, Rhys Chatham, Tim Barnes, Jeph Jerman, Thurston Moore, Greg Davis, and Jonathan Kane, as well as releasing numerous albums under his own name and with his band San Agustin on labels such as Table of the Elements and Family Vineyard. McCombs is more often seen wielding a bass guitar, whether as a member of Eleventh Dream Day, the acoustic collective Pullman, or the pioneering and inimitable Tortoise; in his role as the driving force behind Brokeback; or through his varied work with the likes of Tom Ze, Azita Youseffi, Will Oldham, Yo La Tengo, and Calexico. TU FAWNING Portland’s TU FAWNING return this May with their sophomore release titled A Monument. A mere nine songs short, but enough time to confirm the suspicion raised by the band's debut album Hearts On Hold: Can it be that this band sets itself apart from everything else out there right now? Yes, this is proof. A Monument is in fact a very different record, all the more reason for us to appreciate this band and their artistic merits. Live TU FAWNING deliver a dense, romantic, highly energetic live show, much more powerful than their debut album would have led you to imagine. And on A Monument this sparkles through on every track. A Monument offers exactly nine very different pieces to that beautiful and unusual TU FAWNING style. Tracks like „Blood Stains“ have moved Tu Fawning south, more the Down Under type of south, with the warped R’n’B styles of a Birthday Party or early Bad Seeds. Less the atonality and surely sans the testosterone. And likewise „Wager“ lifts some moment of orchestral nausea out of a Crime And The City Solution track, converting it into a real song. Not all gothic, but certainly all dark. Weird, eccentric, timeless are user-friendly adjectives for the simple minded when trying to describe a band such as this. And lets not forget dramatic! Does it get anymore dramatic than “Build A Great Cliff“ ? Take a rollercoaster ride with the epic seven and a half minute album closer that is „Bones“ ? The latter showing that there is indeed also a sense of playfulness here. Above and beyond the usual guitar, bass, keys, drums, the record features instrumentation such as a ragini, a tuned down marching band drum, old 80’s synths, actually lots of synths, those samples of South American chants turned into chords. Not to mention the degenerated Four Track recorders, dying guitar pedals, but most importantly: „turning your back to the microphone and yelling…“. Monumental indeed! Following their album of Spanish folk songs Anda Jaleo (Fire 2010), Josephine Foster and the Victor Herrero Band have created a superb follow-up entitled Perlas (Pearls) due out on Fire Records in May. It is a jewel of a collection, with songs and poems selected by Josephine herself, gathered from dusty old scores and brought vividly to the present with warm performances full of flesh-and-blood emotion. Made with a variety of stringed instruments and simple percussion, the songs were recorded live in the studio on to analogue tape by Paco Loco in Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain. Foster breathes new life into timeless traditional melodies, drawing from the Spanish-folk traditions of Castile, the Basque, Santander and the Costa Brava. Elemental themes of love bind the collection together, with a melancholy joy that casts a shadow of desire and loss. Track Listing: 1. Puerto De Santa Maria 2. Sangre Colorada 3.
