Public Image Ltd can confirm that their first new album in 20 years ‘This Is PiL’ released on May 28th will contain 12 tracks (track listing below). The album is self-funded by PiL and will be released on PiL’s own label ‘PiL Official’ via Cargo UK Distribution. All the new material was recorded in the UK last year at Steve Winwood’s studio in the Cotswolds. John Lydon: “This Is PiL, PiL Official Ltd.” John Lydon talks about ‘This Is PiL’: “Well, 12 songs, where do I begin? Everything and anything that attracts my attention. ‘One Drop’ is about my early youth in Finsbury Park. Fantastic! Hello, we’re all teenagers don’t you forget it! At any age, stay young. ‘Lollipop Opera’ is basically a beautiful bunch of background noise and music to sum up Britain and all its wonderful ambidextrousness! ‘The Room I Am In’ well that’s about drugs and council flats. And there’s a tragedy that still continues. ‘I Must Be Dreaming’ Well, you know, I must be to put up with these governments. Following on from their monumental live performance at BBC Radio 6 Birthday Celebrations at Queen Elizabeth Hall on Friday March 16th which saw PiL include and baptise 2 new songs: Deeper Water and One Drop, PiL also played 2 very special shows at London’s Heaven showcasing more tracks from the new album with The Times commenting “This was and evening uncompromising art music, worthy of the total concentration of the audience.” The track One Drop has now also received airplay from BBC Radio 6, XFM and Absolute Radio. Widely regarded as one of the most innovative and influential bands of all time PiL's music and vision earned them 5 UK Top 20 Singles and 5 UK Top 20 Albums. With a shifting line-up and unique sound John Lydon guided the band from their debut album 'First Issue' in 1978 through to 1992's 'That What Is Not', before a 17 year hiatus. John then resurrected PiL in 2009 playing live worldwide. Now after 20 years yet another new and unique chapter is set to unfold in the shape of new PiL material. Public Image Ltd live line up / wrote and recorded the new material John Lydon- After fronting the Sex Pistols, John Lydon formed Public Image Ltd in 1978. Outside of PiL John has released several solo records and collaborations. He also brings quality TV to the masses. Lu Edmonds- Multi instrumentalist and former guitarist in The Damned Lu joined PiL in 1986 recording and playing on the album Happy? and cowriting the album ‘9’ adding yet another dimension to the PiL sound. Bruce Smith- Former drummer in The Pop Group and The Slits became percussionist for PiL also in 1986 playing and recording on the albums Happy? and ‘9’. Seen as a drumming virtuoso, Bruce Smith brought his unique style into the fold. Scott Firth- A bass player/multi instrumentalist that has collaborated and played with a variety of top musicians and bands including Steve Winwood, John Martyn, and Elvis Costello. Tracklisting: 1. Sun Kil Moon Among The Leaves STREET DATE 5.29.12
Among The Leaves is the 5th full length album by Mark Kozelek under the Sun Kil Moon moniker. Played almost entirely on nylon string guitar, this 17-song all original album was recorded between October 2011 and January 2012 in San Francisco. Among The Leaves - words which caught Mark's attention from a John Connolly novel - finds Mark relaxed, singing playfully about his life as a musician while retaining the melancholic spirit of his 20 year catalog. Mark's love for San Francisco and Northern California are at the heart of this new album. "My first album (Down Colorful Hill) was released in 1992" says Kozelek, “but creatively, I feel like I'm just beginning. The new album was written and recorded impulsively, without second guessing. I didn’t have that kind of confidence in the past." Unlike Red House Painters' epic Rollercoaster, described by Rolling Stone as “the slowest and mopiest self revelations ever put to tape” or Sun Kil Moon’s Ghosts of the Great Highway, which Billboard Magazine called “heartbreaking," Among The Leaves displays a more raw and humorous side of Mark’s songwriting. Aaron Prellwitz, recording engineer of Red House Painters and all 5 Sun Kil Moon albums describes the latest effort as "wonderfully direct." Kozelek curiously ties together legends Joe Frazier, Bobby Fischer and Ed Gein in ‘The Winery,’ ‘Song for Richard Collopy’ is a touching tribute to the late San Francisco guitar repairman, and "Sunshine In Chicago” - written just before taking the stage at a Chicago venue last year – is a funny, self deprecating poke at life on the road. Though Among The Leaves is mostly in the solo, nylon string style of Admiral Fell Promises, a new ensemble of players joined Mark for a portion of the record, recalling the same spirit as April and Tiny Cities, but with a fresh, new sound. Pareidolia ABOUT: Simian Mobile Disco’s James Ford and Jas Shaw, esteemed producers individually and acclaimed band together return with their new album, UnPatterns. With their albums to date, spanning from their seminal debut Attack Decay Sustain Release to 2011’s compilation album Delicacies, the only throughline in their varied career has been their constant refusal to play by the rules, their creative restlessness resulting in them staying perpetually ahead of the curve. In a sharp leftfield turn from the addictive pop ballast and canny guest vocals of their previous records, “Seraphim” sees them in playfully experimental form, creating a spatial, spaced out anthem drenched in sun-kissed euphoria. Elsewhere, ghosts in the machine croon on “I Waited For You”, a cyborg Chicago house singer implores you to “Put Your Hands Together” and alien choirs raise their voices in the ambient “Fourteenth Principles.” It’s a record full of love, dedication, hard-earned experience, obvious understanding of decades of electronic music from across scenes and styles, and huge fun. It’s completely of the now, showing a band as familiar with Blawan and Lone as they are with Silver Apples and Phuture, but never jumping on bandwagons. A new musical adventure from Tim DeLaughter (The Polyphonic Spree) and Philip E. Karnats (Secret Machines)
preteen zenith - rubble guts and bb eye Street Date: May 29, 2012 Genre: Psych Colored Prism Frenzy Tim began writing and demoing songs at home in Dallas in February 2009, with the intent of merely documenting new ideas. He continued the process in New York City that summer by subletting a small apartment to get away, as it were, and focus. He wound up recording the ideas on his laptop, and shared some on his blog (thefragilearmy.blogspot.com). Enter Philip E Karnats, a longtime friend and former bandmate from Tripping Daisy who went on to play Street Date: with the Secret Machines and Ike Reilly and release a solo 05/29/2012 album through DeLaughter's Good Records Recordings Artist: label in 2006. Phil happened to invite Tim to Chicago just PRETEEN ZENITH to hang out and do some improvising and recording. Title: Tim was excited by the idea. "It had been a long time coming," RUBBLE GUTS & BB EYE DeLaughter says. "We'd had several conversations over the recent years about doing something together. We had no idea of what we'd do, but I was definitely looking forward to it!" Track Listing: Initially, the idea was to record and improvise and see what 1. BULLION - Love Me Oh Please Love Me EP
FORMAT - CD LABEL - FIE Records UPC - 5023522910720 CATALOG # FIE9107CD LIST PRICE - $15.99 Most recently, on the two track R&S single 'Say Arr Ee' / 'What Does She Know', Bullion replaced what would previously have been samples with his own voice and recorded instrumental parts. 'Love Me Oh Please Love Me' is the natural continuation; a 5 track EP of songs written alone (except Robert Wyatt cover ‘The Age Of Self’) and assembled in a short period last year using drum machines, guitars and synths, along with his own voice and lyrics. These recordings show more of Bullion than any of his previous output, stripped back to the bare bones in parts, on other songs showing the production and arranging talent he was already known for.

THE BABIES—My Name / The War
FORMAT - CD LABEL - Bad Paintings UPC - 5055300350657 CATALOG # BP7001 LIST PRICE - $7.99
Recorded in the summer of 2009, My Name and The War were two of the first songs ever written and recorded by The Ba-bies. Capturing the band’s raw energy and honest, direct sound, the single also marks the first 7 inch release for fledging UK label, Bad Paintings. Indebted to classic 60s song writing and garage rock by the likes of The Creation, this single shows The Babies at their most open and organic.
LUCY MICHELLE and the VELVET LAPELLES Take a pinch of mountain gypsy, a dash of psych-folk and a combine it with an ocean of split-open-and-melt lyricism, intricately delivered by one of the most unique voices in music, and you have Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles. Since bursting onto the Twin Cities music scene in 2008, the fiery five-piece have blossomed into one of the most celebrated and cherished young talents to emerge from Minnesota in recent history. Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles have completed work on their fourth full length release, HEAT, at Vacation Island Recording Studios in Brooklyn with acclaimed producer/engineer Matt Boynton (MGMT, Beirut, Bat for Lashes). The new record is comprised of all original material written predominantly by Lucy Michelle during the bone-chilling Minnesota winter of 2010. Many of the songs center around the feeling of being trapped and isolated while yearning to be somewhere else; physically or psychologically. HEAT showcases the artistic growth and sonic evolution of the band’s sound which translates into a magnificent record laced with scorching lyricism, hauntingly beautiful melodies and gorgeous harmonies that create an expansive, yet highly focused and cohesive body of work. GEMMA RAY ISLAND FIRE UK maverick songstress Gemma Ray has gone all out with her latest and most ambitious album Island Fire, out May 29 on Bronze Rat. True to previous eclectic form, the album is a trip through Gemma’s ever-growing, over-flowing bag of tricks. From lavish orchestral alt-pop (“Bring Ring Ring Yeah”), to intimate stop-youin-your-tracks tracks (“Flood And A Fire”), to bitter-sweet girlgroup-sounds (“Put Your Brain In Gear”) to brooding psychedelia (“Make It Happen”) to a sci-fi waltz (“Rescue Me”), and much more besides. Runaway, is Link Wray’s guitar laid over a cheap drum machine, but bottle-rocketed to God Knows Where with a new level of posh, courtesy of vocal harmonies galore and runaway (yes, runaway) strings. It shouldn’t really make sense. On paper it probably doesn’t. But that’s the whole point of being taken by surprise, right? To top the album off, Gemma instigated an unprecedented collaboration with Ron and Russell Mael, also known as Sparks. In what can only be described as Sparks covering Gemma Ray covering Sparks, the end result is a Sparks re-interpretation of Gemma’s interpretation of Sparks.... Confused? All you need to know is the two tracks that are the result of this unlikely meeting of minds appear on the album as bonuses, after already being released as a must-own* 7” complete with artwork by Rick Froberg of Obits/Hot Snakes. (* you’re too late, its long sold out.). RELEVANT SIDENOTE – Gemma once fainted at a Sparks concert. CD comes in a sophisticated card jacket whereas the super limited vinyl comes in heavyweight clear vinyl, complete – of course - with download code. • • • •
Gemma Ray has just concluded a successful US tour, including SXSW PR, sales and marketing by Girlie Action Media in NYC. Radio by Distiller. College and non-comm radio impact date: May 1st. Online coverage on NME.com, MySpace, TheQuietus, The 405, Yahoo, DrownedInSound, PopCandy, NPR Song of the Day & RCRD LBL.
"An album packed with adventure and mischief. A true gem." - Mojo Magazine **** "She's so darkly cool" - Sound + Vision "Had Phil Spector forced his girl groups in a more noir-soundtrack direction, this might've been the result. Ray has a truly impressive feel for vintage pop flourishes, layered to lavish effect." – Spin Magazine “[Gemma Ray’s] brassy neo-soul stylings recall Phil Spector and David Lynch in roughly equal measures, taking inspiration from the past while still sounding totally contemporary.” – Flavorwire

Tucker, FAME “Where have the crazy performers like Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Nappy Brown, Chuck Berry, Guitar Slim, and Howlin’ Wolf gone? We don’t have many like that anymore, especially in the blues. Matt Hill is that and more, conjuring thoughts of a blues baby of The Killer himself. “ — Juke Joint Soul “This young man brings the primal nature of blues and rock’n’roll back to the forefront.” — Don Crow, Nashville Blues Society • 2011 Blues Music Awards winner: BEST NEW ARTIST DEBUT • 2011 Blues Blast Awards nominee: BEST NEW ARTIST DEBUT & SEAN COSTELLO RISING STAR AWARD

“Consequences” is Peter’s thirtieth solo studio album of original songs. Ten jittery new pieces which stretch the boundaries of the form. Some are wordy, or about words - and miscommunication, mishearing, misapprehension. Around another corner, lives and actions are overheard, overseen, characters stalked and surprised. Sometimes these pieces stray into the territory of the short story or screenplay - something is happening just outside the frame, just beyond the range of vision. Distanced from the norms of songs though they are, a strong narrative thread runs through the heart of each recording. The instrumentation centres on electric guitars and a variety of pianos. Percussion is sparse. The occasional interjection of other instrumental colours enhances rather than expands the sonic picture. Central to the realisation of all the songs are authoritative vocal performances in lead, backing and choral roles. Once again the whole thing is written, performed, sung and recorded entirely solo. “Consequences” is a weighty addition to Peter’s body of work. Track Listing : 1 Eat my Words, Bite my Tongue, 2 That Wasn't What I Said, 3 Constantly Overheard, 4 New Pen-pal, 5 Close to Me, 6 All the Tiredness, 7 Perfect Pose, 8 Scissors, 9 Bravest Face, 10 A Run of Luck

Mattias Hellberg High in the Lowlands A Hidden Agenda Record Released May 29, 2012 Swedish singer/songwriter Mattias Hellberg's new album 'High In The Lowlands' is an intimate collaboration with longtime friend Mattias Areskog. Just the two of them stuck in a cabin over a long winter, but the end result is yet another Hellberg masterpiece.
1. Black cloud man 2. Oh no 3. Blue 4. Hell 5. Nouvelle d'amour 6. You don't 7. Born into being alone 8. Like a sun 9. Moon 10. Strange winds 11. Over & done
Throughout his solo career Mattias Hellberg's sad-souled songs of Scandinavian heartbreak -- be it solo or with Hederos & Hellberg, Healing Hand or his handful of acclaimed solo releases -- always did have a rootsy, folksy approach. With 'High In the Lowlands' he falls back to his troubadour roots, songs drawn from the wellspring of rock's collective unconscious. Hellberg's rock'n'roll pedigree includes his own band The White Moose, plus past membership in Nymphet Noodlers, Hellacopters, Nationalteaterns RockOrkester, Thunder Express, Stefan Sundström's band, and occasionally The Soundtrack of Our Lives. "A sinister set of songs tinted with the darker shades of blues, akin to psychedelic junkies like David Crosby, Skip Spence and British acid casualties like Syd Barret & that bunch. The mellow melancholy of Hellberg’s music carries an ethereal echo verging on the nostalgia of Sweden's woodland folk songs.” - Kenny Håkansson

DAVID RAMOS SENTO LA TUA MANCANZA FFINC037 : DAVID RAMOS SENTO LA TUA MANCANZA RELEASE DATE: MAY 29, 2012 From MGMT to Das Racist to Francis and the Lights, Wesleyan University has in the past half-decade come to be regarded as the primordial soup through which a cornucopia of avant-garde sound came to be. Though nurturing the musical ambitions already forged through Anonymous Inc. and Toca certainly factored in to David Ramos’ collegiate locale, his prime motivator upon entering the school was its proximity to his grandmother’s house in New Haven. Amidst hitting the books, being named one of the top ten progressive drummers by Modern Drummer magazine, and playing shows with burgeoning Wesleyan acts in addition to recording and performing with established veterans such as Aceyalone, Busdriver and folk musician Little Wings, many busdriver evenings and all weekends were spent 30 minutes from the Middletown campus, where the grandmother who provided so much comfort and guidance in the absence of his addict father resided. In 2008, David would form the label Fake Four, Inc. alongside his brother Ceschi and set up operations in New Haven. That same year saw the release of David’s This Up Here, which began the snowballing critical praise landing the label in a pantheon of indie rap elite alongside Rhymesayers and Def Jux. The success, however, was bittersweet for David. As his grandmother grew ill, David placed musical aspirations on hiatus, moved in to her home to provide care and did not leave the state of Connecticut for three years. In September of 2010, his beloved grandmother passed away. On his latest release Sento La Tua Mancanza, David Ramos is at war with impermanence. Falling somewhere between concept album and unrepressed journal entry, the album is David’s love letter to another dimension. It is a tale of completely falling apart and forgetting how to live in one’s absence. It is the cartographer slowly charting his course outof hell and a hazy sketch of the images passing by. David’s straightforward lyrical approach on the record is accented by the production of German beatsmith Oskar Ohlson and Toca bandmate Tommy V. with instrumental accompaniment from Anonymous Inc. cohorts Ceschi and Max Heath. Ceschi also provides gorgeous backing vocals along with Lizzie Lee. As tongue-twisting raps seamlessly coexist with folksy harmonies, many tracks meander towards a playful, warm orchestration reminiscent of Yann Tiersenand recent WHY?, providing a hint of levity on a heavy album. David speaks of searching for an old birthday cardcontaining his grandmother’s handwriting and clinging to the dwindling scent from her dresses left hanging in the closet. No topic is held too close to the chest in his cathartic sonic explorations. It takes a great deal of bravery to release theinnermost layers of one’s being into the world, however painful and harrowing their hue, and it is something David Ramos does beautifully through the 14 tracks of Sento La Tua Mancanza. Ramos has cultivated a sound that is undoubtedly from his own mind, with a patchwork of square waves and Casiotones. -Tiny Mix Tapes

★ ★ A VA I L A B L E O N 7 ” 4 5 r p m M AY 2 9 TH, 2 012 ★ After years in the making, Ruby Velle & The Soulphonics will release their full-length debut album, "It's About Time," in July 2012. "MY DEAR," the lead-off single from the upcoming long player, is a classic midtempo R&B gem that draws on every facet of The Soulphonics' wheelhouse. A HEAVY and hypnotic, ripe for sample-pickin' backbeat, bass, and piano groove lays the funky groundwork for Ruby to stand on as she belts out "Only love will help us overcome everything." The B-side cut on the 45rpm single is a monstrous remix of the A-side, by Miami's DJ Le Spam. Ruby Velle & The Soulphonics' roots are embedded in the rich sound and history of Georgia soul, beginning with the early 50's and 60's R&B that became so well known around the world. Having performed countless gigs since their inception, and with a slew of 45rpm singles already under their belts, the band has already contributed heavily to the steadily increasing awareness of genuine rhythm and blues music that exists today. They pack clubs and festivals with their original brand of soul, all of which is written and recorded in Atlanta. Named by Creative Loafing as Atlanta's best soul band in 2010 and 2011, Ruby Velle & The Soulphonics are taking it worldwide in 2012, with a packed full-length and a strong kickoff with this single, "My Dear."

Long-promised live album from late-‘70s Illinois rock & roll outfit The Rave. Vintage Midwestern guitar-pop and rock recorded in 1979. Akin to their regional peers of the day, like Cheap Trick, Shoes, and Off Broadway, but with a sense of humor that bordered on the absurd. Fun stuff! The Rave burned new ground on the prairies of Illinois with their cynical look at the world and then current musical trends, like disco. Though they appeared on the scene when new wave and punk rock were picking up steam, The Rave was more of a “good times” yet formidable rock and roll band. They crafted hard driving songs that often had an air of sarcasm about them and were melodic and memorable.

The band’s “Odd Fellow” entourage was a powerful joining of musicians from extremely diversified backgrounds both musical and logistical. The Rave’s originators had worked together in Chicago as well as Champaign prior to forming the band. Garrett Oostdyk had been lead guitar player for the famed Finchley Boys, and Lyle Diamond, from Nebraska, had written the material and sang lead for several groups in the Chicago area including country rock group Jesse. Percussionist Tommy Domino had provided the beat for many Champaign bands and went on to become a member of The Last Gentlemen. Oostdyk and Diamond found guitar player/singer/front-man Herbert Tareyton to be a natural to round out the group. An attempt at describing the group visually would take more than a few sentences, but suffice it to say that The Rave were as interesting visually as they were musically… A genuine diamond in the rough in the history of rock & roll.
Artist: The Hundred In The Hands Title: Keep It Low 5/28/2012
Overview THE HUNDRED IN THE HANDS have emerged from their dimly-lit New York studio with a self-produced meditation on separation and reunion, love nearly lost and the long night back to it; a chronicle of late-hour pining awash in digital glow and urban buzzing. Their new album Red Night, releasing June 12, arrives in the form of an after-light transmission from a faraway source, leading the listener deep into the city’s thrum.

The first single “Keep It Low” is a grinding jam that foregrounds the sounds of timeless Industrial and Krautrock tracks, whilst maintaining an undeniably affecting vocal performance from singer Eleanore Everdell. Exclusive to this 12” is previously unreleased b-side “Mountains”, a dubbed-out track with lurid vocal inflections. Dark, moody dancefloor remixes from the UK’s biggest DJ’s & producers compliment THITH flawlessly. Andy Stott, whose EP’s contained “some of the most tormented but physically powerful dance music of [2011]” according to Pitchfork, contributes a characteristically churning, menacing rework of “Keep It Low”. JD Twitch contributes as member of the now-legendary Glaswegian party and DJ duo Optimo, delivering not one, but two shimmering, Factory Records induced takes, providing a chilled dub to the mix. Splitting the difference is the genre-defying Patten, one of the most intriguing young musicians on the British scene today. Hailed as “exhaustingly brilliant” his own remix of “Keep it Low” is shrouded in hissing, gauzy vocals and gently skittering hi hats that are sure to send you dancing.

GENRE:
Garage Rock
Audio: http://soundcloud.com/badpaintings/sets/the-babies-my-name/s-lKX7z . Recorded in the summer of 2009, My Name and The War were two of the first songs ever written and recorded by The Babies. Capturing the band’s raw energy and honest, direct sound, the single also marks the first 7 inch release for fledging UK label, Bad Paintings. Indebted to classic 60s song writing and garage rock by the likes of The Creation, this single shows The Babies at their most open and organic. Sounding like Nancy and Lee singing on Surfer Rosa, the melodies wouldn’t be out of place on a Shangri-Las record. This is the edge of Wild Gift era X - pop without a hint of twee. Having heard the two songs on a bootlegged early live recording, they became the favourites of Bad Paintings. As part of the Wrong Side of the River collective, the label’s founders helped organise a show for The Babies at their DIY event in York, UK. “I had honestly forgotten about The War and My Name until we were playing in York and the crowd requested we play them,” commented Kevin Morby (of The Babies and Woods), “it was such a pleasant blast from the past.” He went on to say, “At some of our very first shows we always opened up with these tunes. They were both recorded in the same sessions as Meet Me In The City and All Things Come To Pass, but for some reason never had any release outside of a tour tape we made in 2010.” “I’m glad that now they have found a home with Bad Paintings 3 years later!” The single features My Name on the A side, a paean to youth and growing up, and The War on the B side, a song about confusion and helplessness. It’s a must for fans of The Babies, as well as related bands Woods and Vivian Girls – as Kevin put it, “although the songs may not be the best representation of the bands current sound, it definitely shows some of our deepest roots.” The Babies are expected to release a second album during 2012 See The Leaves (USA) http://seetheleaves.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/leaf-cast-004-march-2012.html Heard Instinct (USA) http://heard-instinct.com/post/19398291800/the-babies-my-name Ash Bees Fragment (USA) http://ashbeesfragment.blogspot.com/2012/03/babies-on-record-store-day.html Awkward Sound (USA) http://www.awkwardsound.com/2012/03/hear-new-sound-babies-my-name-b-w-war.html I Need A Little Escape (USA) http://ineedalittleescape.wordpress.com/ Feast Of Beast (USA) http://feastofbeast.tumblr.com/

British punk royalty and The founder member of The Damned, Brian James produces an acoustic / roots album with ex Lords of the New Church, Simple Minds keyboardist Mark Taylor. From Delta Blues through Reggae, the catchy and comical boogie of “ Something floatin’ “ and a hopelessly romantic New Orleans style opener this album is simple but very effective. Just two men, an acoustic guitar, piano and accordion. Live dates in both Europe and USA are being scheduled for 2012 .The style of the album owes more to Tom Waits or Seasick Steve and proves that Brian James is not a one trick pony.Reviews and inter-views are expected in Vive Le Rock, Mojo, Uncut, Record Collector, Rockerilla, R2.

With such rich and hugely melodic tracks as ‘Fantasy’, ‘Hot Love’, ‘Ball And Chain’ and ‘Heart To Heart’ it’s no wonder that Aldo’s brand of immaculate AOR attracted instant success.”
ALDO NOVA - Subject FORMAT - CD LABEL - Rock Candy UPC - 827565058945 CATALOG # CANDY134 LIST PRICE - $20.99 Originally released in 1983, ‘Subject: Aldo Nova’ is a richer and far more intense effort than his debut album. Sure, initial reviews lambasted its ‘difficult’ musical thread and ‘post apocalyptic’ lyrical con-cept as a tad too highbrow for what he was then perceived as (a melodic hard rocker) but time and dis-tance has invited an altogether more positive reaction. The songs here can be classified as progressive pop rock in the grandest sense, with an emphasis focused on precise arrangements and carefully crafted instrumentation. But the good thing is that Aldo didn’t fully abandon his penchant for finely tuned melodies, crafting a number of superlative track, such as ‘Monkey On Your Back’, ‘Hold Back’, ‘Cry Baby Cry’ and a surprising interpretation of the Coney Hatch classic, ‘Hey Operator’.”
WIRELESS —Positively Human Relatively Sane FORMAT - CD LABEL - Rock Candy UPC - 827565058631 CATALOG # CANDY136 LIST PRICE - $20.99 Managed by SRO, the same people behind premiere Canadian rock band Rush, and signed to Anthem Records, another Rush related spin-off venture, ‘Positively Human, Relatively Sane’ was greeted with universal acclaim by those fed-up to the back teeth with schlock rock and pop. Wireless’ music was both demanding yet accessible, harbouring subterfuge and surprise as weapons of choice. Produced my ex Max Webster bassist Mike Tilka and boasting nine tracks of superlative yet quirky hard rock, the album surfs the surface of convention whilst making inroads regular into progressive rock complexity. Imagine Steely Dan jamming with the Blue Öyster Cult and that might give some indication of the kind of musical magic we’re talking about. If you’ve never heard their music or even if you’ve never actually heard their name before, then might we suggest you get it on the action now or forever hold your curiosity.
WIRELESS -No Static FORMAT - CD LABEL - Rock Candy UPC CANDY137 LIST PRICE - $20.99
- 827565058648 CATALOG # -
Recorded at Le Studio, Moran Heights, just outside Montreal, ‘No Static’ takes the Wireless mandate to its logical conclusion, crafting arguably the band’s definitive musical statement. Geddy Lee’s hands on approach documents a band very much on the attack, leading by example and ramping up the energy level on all fronts. Heavier, harder, yet always hummable, ‘No Static’ makes its intent clear from the lead-off track ‘Pay To Ride’ through to the very closing fade of ‘Journey Of A Possible Hero’ and all points in between. Look out for the epic ‘East Of The Sun, West Of The Moon’, a peach of a tune perfectly encapsulating Wireless’ ability impress at every turn.

Special Limited Deluxe Collector’s Edition / 1st Time on CD in Europe / Fully remastered sound shaped from 24 BIT digital technology / 16 page full colour booklet – 4,000 word essay, enhanced artwork, memorabilia, rare photos and full involvement from Kim Mitchell . Discovered and signed to Rush’s management company (SRO), the band’s debut album, originally is-sued in 1976 and helmed by Rush producer Terry Brown, was funded and issued by Taurus, SRO’s in house production company. The album is a sublime and incredibly captivating work, with as many twists and turns as quirky hooks and riffs can possibly allow. Standout tracks include ‘Hangover’, ‘Here Among The Cats’, ‘Only Your Nose Knows’, and the truly baffling yet utterly compelling ‘Toronto Tontos’. A truly astounding work.
MAX WEBSTER — High Class In Borrowed Shoes
FORMAT - CD LABEL - Rock Candy UPC - 827565058396 CATALOG # CANDY107 LIST PRICE - $20.99 Max Webster’s second album ‘High Class In Borrowed Shoes’, originally released in 1977, is regarded as their pinnacle accomplishment. It is a record of unique appeal, bringing together both the sublime and the outrageous in one bubbling cauldron. Leader Kim Mitchell’s laconic vocals, biting lead guitar work and crushing riffs make for some of the most compelling and enjoyable music to have ever been birthed by a North American rock group – including the work of fellow Canadian über progmen Rush. Produced by Terry Brown (Rush, Klaatu) with pin-point accuracy, ‘High Class...’ is very much a product of art over commerce, featuring extravagant progressive arrangements and some of what would be-come their greatest in-concert favourites, including ‘Diamonds Diamonds’, ‘Gravity’, ‘America’s Veins’ , ‘In Context Of The Moon’ and, of course, the magnificent title track itself. These are songs filled with incomparable creativity and an artistic depth that will have you coming back again and again.
MAX WEBSTER — Mutiny Up My Sleeve FORMAT - CD LABEL - Rock Candy CATALOG # - CANDY108 LIST PRICE - $20.99
UPC - 827565058402
‘Mutiny Up My Sleeve, originally released in 1979 and partly produced by Terry Brown (Rush), was Max Webster’s third album and once again it showcased the band in particularly nimble form; the progres-sive arrangements dovetail neatly, with hard hitting riffs and much spectacular lead guitar work. Lyrically the emphasis is on strange yet compelling tales with no beginning and, by turn, no end to their madness. There are a bunch of classic MW tracks to be found on this album, including the full throttle Prog of both ‘The Party’ and ‘Lip Service’, the mellow ‘Astonish Me’ and the jewel in the crown impact of ‘Waterline’. However, if you really want to experience Max Webster basking in the full glow of perfection then look no further than ‘Beyond The Moon’, a magnificent progressive rock mash-up that will haunt you forever.

WALTON — All Night EP
FORMAT - CD LABEL - Hyperdub UPC - 5055300330611 CATALOG # - HDB061 LIST PRICE - $10.99 All Nite’ EP is the young Mancunian Walton’s second set on Hyperdub, after his very well received ‘Walton EP’ debut for the label in 2011. Title cut ‘All Nite’ kicks it off with warm plucked strings, diva moans and lazer-like synths stretched to the point of anticipation over cracking grime handclaps and bass drums, until the track drops into a blocky bass line playing hide and seek with low arpeggios that spiral in and out of the mix, over a giant pounding metallic kick drum before layer-ing on the warmth again. The whole track plays with a fine balance between warm, disco-like lushness and exuberant roughness. ‘Mallet’ is driving and darker, building detuned, bell-like tones over a 4/4 beat ac-cented by breaks and fills and gaps, dropping into a big bass line and syncopations that disrupt the beat and bring the drama. ‘Kush’ is different again, taking the pace down with low end, synth hip hop with glassy chords, running over woozy pitch shifting Rhodes chords fed through a layer of crackly gauze.
ILL BLU - Clapper / Clapper (Traxman Remix) FORMAT - 12 LABEL - Hyperdub UPC -5055300330642 CATALOG # - HDB062 LIST PRICE - $10.99 Ill Blu return to Hyperdub for their second single with 'Clapper', which contrasts deceptively swinging claps and funky but martial drums with crazy pitched up and down synth stabs and shrieks that sound like psychotically angry birds. It's an incredibly infectious and energising club banger that manages to retain its swagger without losing its sense of humour. On the flip, West Chicago's juke and footwork veteran Traxman takes the bpm up to 160 with his energetic mix, which takes the mood darker, switching from 4 / 4 kicks to 808 electro claps, with jittery punched-in stabs giving the track a nervous energy.

Mikey Murka went up to the dancehall again, John Frum is back with a hauntingly beautiful dub, Soom T is in top shape on one of Frum’s other riddims, Maffi team up with Ranking Levy from MyLord Sound while the Jahtari Riddim Force is on the loose, El Fata rinses Tapes' smashing ‘Gold Love Riddim’, Dis-rupt dug out a forgotten treasure from the vault and Rootah runs his tube delays into the red zone. Wearing the black belt for beatmaking and new in the Jahtari camp is Monkey Marc (who supplied a wicked instrumental for the last Roots Manuva album). Everyone’s favourite sound system champions Mungo's HiFi are about to blow your speakers alongside veteran Jim Nastics, plus there's a very special Rootah version of a Dub Syndicate / Adrian Sherwood classic, with Lee Perry on the mic, lazergun in hand, straightjacket and all. So better pack enough sup-plies for an interstellar trip - this one might take a while.

Vocal groups pick up on the Latin groove. Africa and Latin America have moulded American popular music since the begin-ning of the twentieth century. African influences initially led to the development of jazz, gospel and blues, whose rhythms were further affected by successive waves of dance music from Cuba, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Jamaica. Many vocal groups and gospel quartets in the pre WWII era borrowed rhythmic riffs derived from ragtime such as the charleston; others used standard tresillo or son clave beats. The son clave is the basic building block of all Latin music: a twobar pattern consisting of three beats (a tresillo) preceded or followed by two heavy beats. Most musicians preferred a less complex rhythm, however. The tresillo was often used on its own when a Latin feel was required, but then it was given a snappier, sexier name: the rumba. New Latin influences came into popular music in the forties from New Orleans with that city's distinctive second-line drumming, and from Cuba with the mambo and cha-cha-cha through the medium of bebop jazz. Atlantic Records dominated the early doo-wop scene and their house-arranger Jesse Stone paved the way for a wider adoption of Latin rhythms through his ground-breaking productions for The Clovers and The Drifters.

VARIOUS ARTISTS —The History of New Orleans (Jazz, Blues & Creole Roots Volume 1 1922-1947) FORMAT - 2CD LABEL - Rhythm & Blues UPC - 5065001126147 CATALOG # - RANDB013CD LIST PRICE - $20.99
More than any other city in the world, New Orleans has been responsible for shaping the sound of twentieth century popular music. Sweeping statement that may be, but as the birthplace of jazz, funk and arguably rock’n’roll, it really has no other contenders. At the heart of these three widely different varieties of music lies the rhythmic complexity of second line parade drumming. Its two-beat patterns combining military band and Caribbean rhythms underpin the early recordings of Louis Armstrong as much as they do those of Little Richard and James Brown. This compilation highlights some of the distinguishing characteristics found in early New Orleans recordings, not with the intention of picking out the city’s finest jazz and blues recordings but in order to pinpoint styles that would foreshadow later developments in the rhythm and blues field. Key Elements of New Orleans R&B. Low, greasy, horn sections of baritone and tenor saxes playing chords in unison. Percussive, staccato piano rhythms played in triplets and rolling piano arpeggios. A tendency to play in a slower tempo with a more laidback feel. A preference for traditional eight or sixteen-bar harmonic song structure over the twelve-bar blues format. Two-bar rhythmic phrasing similar to that found in the Caribbean. A unique rhythmic tension derived from bands playing straight time and shuffle time simultaneously.
