Overview
Artist: Battles Title: Gloss Drop
6.7.2011
BATTLES came together in New York in 2002 drawing together disparate strands of hardcore, avant garde tonal minimalism, neo-classical, techno and post rock, featuring drummer John Stanier (Helmet), guitarists Ian Williams (Don Caballero) and Dave Konopka (Lynx) and Tyondai Braxton. After a string of EPs, the group signed to Warp and released their debut Mirrored, the success of which was immediate and profound.
WARPCD212/WARPLP212
During the winter of 2009, Battles decamped to the Machines with Magnets studio in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, to start work on a follow up. They recorded nearly an entire album, and by Autumn 2010 were ready to start mixing when things came off the rails. It was at this point that Braxton realized he just couldn’t commit to the overwhelming touring schedule that was due to follow the release of their much anticipated second album and quit the band. The existence of Battles revolves around one key construct: that Battles as a whole is greater than the sum of its parts...even if those parts all happened to be particularly beautifully constructed and intricately interlocking. Battles was bigger than any four of them individually and would continue. With Braxton gone they began the unenviable process of unweaving all of his parts from the whole in order to construct something entirely new from what remained. It is true that Gloss Drop is a bewitching, entrancing album that defies both categorization and easy analysis. Just as Mirrored was a massive leap on from the early EPs that first got them noticed, this is truly another seismic shift, propelling them once more into uncharted territory. It is a sheer sense of fun, unpredictability and inventiveness that sets Battles apart from every other contemporary group. Stanier sums this up succinctly: “I don’t think challenging, new music has to be super serious all the time. That’s really boring to me and pushing boundaries should not be boring.” While other acts are content to deal in revivalism or stasis, Battles are still looking for far-off boundaries to study and then demolish, searching for new and exotic styles to mesh together. Stanier concludes: “When we’re writing songs, no one in this group has ever said ‘Wait, we’ve gone too far. This isn’t a Battles song.’ Because what is a Battles song? We don’t know. All I know is that there are no parameters and no boundaries. That is the whole point and has been since day one.”

Artist: Battles Title: Ice Cream
5.24.2011 WRP9319
“A bouncing-ball summer jam... a lithe but brawny rhythm conveying so much joy” –Pitchfork “A manic, quasi-tropical pop explosion” –XLR8R This limited 12" features the first single, "Ice Cream" from Battles’ forthcoming album Gloss Drop (June 7, Warp Records). Ice Cream's neat trick is to rope in the impish minimal techno DJ Matias Aguayo, and use him solely on vocals. The track unveils a mischievous sense of fun that now lies at the center of the Battles sound, coming on like the soundtrack to a raucous, moonlit beach party in Brazil, matching the inventiveness of 21st century prog with the lilt of 1960's Tropicalia.

Joe Ely - Satisfied At Last Street Date: June 7, 2011 When you have spent more than 40 years writing and recording songs that underscore a sense of turbulence, where violent winds, thunderstorms and tornadoes figure prominently and beckoning, distant horizons are ever present, it takes courage to name an album, Satisfied At Last. Known for a life full of wanderlust and constant motion, getting lost and rediscovering himself on the world's lonesome highways and dusty back roads, Ely’s latest release from his independent record label, Rack‘Em Records, suggests that he is seeing things in a new light….but one listen to the album that embodies his genre busting unique mix of traditional Tex-Mex rhythms, outlaw country, Texas blues and good old-fashioned American rock and roll, people will see that he isn’t about to slow down any time soon. National Release Date: CD/LP: 06/07/2011
HIGHTLIGHTS • This is Sondre’s first record on his own record label, Mona Records. • Already Sondre has garnered support from New York Magazine, Under the Radar, Paste, Stereogum, and Daytrotter. • Confirmed KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic in June 2011. • Headlining the Daytrotter Barnstormer Tour in April 2011. • Touring Nationwide in June 2011 and again in the fall.
Praised by Rolling Stone, The New York Times, Stereogum, Filter and Entertainment Weekly among others for his experimentation with contrasting musical sounds, Sondre Lerche is the artist’s sixth fulllength album and his first on his own label, Mona Records. An artistic statement of purpose, this fittingly self-titled album contains not only Sondre’s most interesting arrangements and catchy songwriting to date, but also some of his most somber and introspective. Here the Norwegian-born artist relishes in exploring friendships and creative alliances forged in his new Williamsburg, Brooklyn neighborhood. The album features longtime producer/collaborator Kato Ådland, Dave Heilman, drummer for Lerche-collaborator Regina Spektor, and co-producer, mixer and owner of Rare Book Room Studio, Nicolas Verhnes (Spoon, Animal Collective). Sondre Lerche captures a raw, spontaneous, instinctive and heartfelt sound that results in a declarative and confident work many call Lerche’s boldest and best album to date. Bikini is Nigel Diamond and Olivier Olivier. Their music is like Salinger on MDMA. Diamond is originally from Miami and Olivier was classically trained at the Royal Conservatory. Olivier Olivier is the son of the late Indian poet Fateh Bains and moved to Canada where he attended Glen-Lyon Norfolk School, a school chosen for its musical program affiliated with the Royal Conservatory of Music. It was here Olivier met Nigel Diamond, who was sent down after he was expelled from his previous school. It wasn’t until after Glen-Lyon Norfolk that the two began to make music together. Olivier composes all the melodies in the fall of each year, drawing his inspiration from the poetry he writes during the summer. He records vocals, exports all his drafts without titles or form to Diamond. Diamond spends the following spring arranging Olivier's melodies, rhythm sequences and vocal treatments – adding his own lines. The result is a finished record. Nothing is sent back to Olivier. The songs are sent from Diamond to be mastered and released.

Upon the digital/CD release they knocked Kanye off the top of the Hypem chart. Now, they’re back, with friends. “This is the start of a new west-coast era,” says Diamond, referencing the release of “RIPJDS” on vinyl, available May 6th 2011 and featuring Win Win, CFCF, Teen Daze, Dreamboat and Houses. East-coast dweller Olivier disagrees; “Let Diamond say what he wants. It’s pretty clear which coast prevailed.” Bikini have never recorded an album together in the same city. Consequently, their online collaborations spark an internal rivalry that is key to the music they create. LA-based Diamond brings Dreamboat, Teen Daze and Houses into the mix. Olivier offered up CFCF, Win Win and prolific underground artist Nate Lowman for cover art. “American Mourning” was reworked by XXXchange, Chris Devlin and Ghostdad under their new production name, Win Win. Montréal’s master of disco-noir, CFCF, somehow managed to twist and distort “R.I.P.” to within an inch of its life. And Vancouver dancefloor-purveyor, Teen Daze, injected his own brand of 80s house piano and careless optimism into enigmatic fan-favourite, “ACheerlaeder”. Highlights:
+ Music Video for “ACheerlaeder” to be released via MuchMusic & MTV + Publicity to be handled by Big Hassle + Debut vinyl release, limited to 500 copies + Original album artwork by prolific NYC artist Nate Lowman. + Much more to come! THE WOODEN BIRDS TWO MATCHSTICKS
bark111 CD/LP+MP3
STREET DATE: JUNE 7, 2011
After spending several years in New York, The Wooden Birds’ frontman Andrew Kenny decided he’d swallowed a big enough bite of the Big Apple and made his way back to Austin. The capital of Texas is where he once led slowcore icons The American Analog Set into rivers of hypnotic grooves and dreamy guitars, so it’s been a homecoming of sorts, even though Kenny, who grew up about 190 miles north in Fort Worth, is the first to admit that nobody’s actually from Austin.
TRACKLISTING 1. Folly Cub 2. Two Matchsticks 3. Cross My Heart 4. Criminals Win 5. Company Time 6. Warm To The Blade 7. Baby Jeans 8. Too Pretty To Say Please 9. Struck By Lightning 10. Secrets 11. Be No Lie 12. Long Time To Lose It
On June 7th, The Wooden Birds are set to release their second album, Two Matchsticks, which finds Kenny continuing to explore his singer-songwriter side and show off his ability to pair atmospheric tendencies with sturdy folk-pop. While the new disc retains many of the same colors used in the past, Two Matchsticks has moved away from the Southern claims of 2009’s Magnolia and contains an energy not felt on its predecessor. That’s partly because the debut album was written in a Brooklyn bedroom that occasionally made the results seem a bit claustrophobic, whereas Two Matchsticks reflects the joy and whimsy of what Kenny calls “easy Austin living.” The Wooden Birds includes drummer Sean Haskins and guitarist-singers Leslie Sisson (an AmAnSet guest performer) and Matt Pond (a familiar name known for his work under the Matt Pond PA moniker). Writing for a band means that Kenny can now visualize how his songs will sound live, and in turn Two Matchsticks has been influenced by the 150 or so shows that the group has played over the past couple of years, including stints with Grand Archives (in Europe), The Clientele, Great Lake Swimmers, Dan Mangan, and Broken Social Scene.

Kenny mixed Two Matchsticks with Louie Lino (Nada Surf, Matt Pond PA), and the two successfully made a richer, denser album than The Wooden Birds’ debut. It’s also packed with standout vocal performances from everyone involved, delivering lyrics that touch on unrequited love, heartbreak, and other things that keep us up at night but also, ultimately, get us out of bed in the morning. Please enjoy!

Brian Olive takes us further on his latest full length release “Two Of Everything”. This second album from the exGreenhornes guitarist and Soledad Brothers multi-instrumentalist was produced by Olive himself and Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. Returning side players on “Two Of Everything” include guitarist Mike Weinel, drummers Jared McKinney (formerly of the Greenhornes) and Dan Allaire (Darker My Love), as well as backing vocalists Holly and Tori Kadish. With the addition of David Shettler (SSM, the Sights) on drums /synthesizer, and Courtney Jaye, Leisa Han, Kari Kragness, and Sarah Benn on backing vocals, this album connects a primal rhythmic intensity with unearthly overtones inside a melodic dreamscape. Brian will be joining the legendary Dr. John and Dan Auerbach on stage at this year’s Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee. He is also laying down sax parts for Dr. John’s upcoming album. Released in 2009 on Alive Naturalsound records, Brian Olive’s self-titled debut received an enthusiastic reception from the rock n’roll press : “Unexpected is just how much musical ground is covered in this gem of a record, and with such cohesive results.” – The Agit Reader “I’m going to bury Brian Olive’s self-titled summer 2009 release in a time capsule in my backyard, because I think residents of the future deserve to hear a record that offers a thorough summation of all that is good about rock music up to this point in history (AD 2009).” – Almost Four Stars “An album of gritty retrospection. If you’re a fan of the classics like I am, look no further.” – The Owlmag “Reshaping the past, the album presents an alternate musical history where linear evolution is replaced by spontaneous genesis, and what a wonderful creation it is.” - Goldmine ALIVE0122-1 • BOX : 30 RED VINYL BAR CODE : 095081012219 SRLP : $16.99 • Genre : PSYCH POP ALIVE0122-2 • DIGIPAK : 30 BAR CODE : 095081012226 SRLP : $15.99 • Genre : PSYCH POP
Los Angeles-based Mike Bloom is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who is co-founder of The Elected with Blake Sennett of Rilo Kiley and a member of Julian Casablancas’ band. After years of contributing to critically acclaimed recordings by Rilo Kiley, Jenny Lewis and others, his debut solo album King of Circles will be released June 7th on Pierre de Reeder’s (Rilo Kiley) Little Record Company. All of the songs were written, most instruments played, and every song produced and mixed by Mike (with the exception of a few coproductions). His songwriting is at once uniquely his own, and curiously familiar. The warm, bedroom intimacy draws listeners in - there is a wealth of instrumentation and sonic detail augmenting the vocal/ acoustic guitar centerpiece. King of Circles was originally funded by actor Tobey Maguire before landing at de Reeder’s new label. Songs with more than a little in common with the canon of Carson McCullers abound on King of Circles. The scornful woman in “Floataway Sinner” extracts revenge on her hapless victim, saying “Hold on baby, don’t you float away sinner, Gonna pay for your acts, and that’s all” – her closing shot reveals a moral compass off course when she explains, “…us long shots ain’t supposed to win clean”. “Butcher Paper” started life as a guitar piece he recorded – when Jenny Lewis heard it she whipped out a set of lyrics and recorded it over Mike’s playing and sent it back to him. An evocative love song with starkly vivid lyrics resulted with this refrain, “Wrapped in twine, the butcher’s paper, my bloody heart inside”. Longtime friend/bandmate Blake Sennett (Rilo Kiley, The Elected) contributes vocals on “Til It’s Over” (The Elected have an album coming out in May as well, Mike coproduced and plays a multitude of instruments) The title track addresses emotional ambiguity as a form of revenge; “Dry Land” paints the picture of a long marriage at its expiration date with gentle acoustic guitar and Bloom’s lyric, “…this is the empty glass at the party’s end.” “Devil’s Island” can be heard in the new Sony Pictures thriller, The Roommate. With his packed schedule touring and doing recording sessions, the songs were written and recorded over a period of years. “Some came directly from my bedroom demos and landed on the record almost untouched,” he explains “Some are much older than others, but they still felt like they belonged here.” Touring in the US and Europe, he honed the songs the old fashioned way, in front of live audiences.

street date 6.7.11 Nik Freitas is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist living in Los Angeles, CA. A self taught musician and engineer, Nik records and plays everything on his albums. He has released 4 records since 2002, the most recent being ‘Sun Down’ in 2008. Freitas has toured his own music extensively and has been the opening act on many U.S. tours for such bands as Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley, Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, and Azure Ray. In early 2008, Nik became a member Conor Oberst’s Mystic Valley Band. For the next two years, Freitas played guitar on and toured for Oberst’s 2008 self titled solo album, and 2009’s ‘Outer South’, including having two of his own songs featured on ‘Outer South’. In Feb. of 2010 Nik joined the live performing band for the Danger Mouse and James Mercer project Broken Bells, and spent the year playing guitar on the road with the band. Between all the touring, Nik was recording his own music at his home studio in Los Angeles. With the constant movement, limited time and space, and after playing electric guitar in bands for the previous few years, Freitas began incorporating electronic instruments more into his music. Guitar solos and live drums were now being replaced with old early 80’s synthesizers and drum machines, mixing organic acoustics with analog sound generators, Beats, and digital swells. With a small window inbetween touring with Broken Bells, Nik self released a 5 song E.P. entitled ‘Center of the World’ in October 2010 which was followed by a mini US solo tour. The small collection of songs were taken from these new recordings spanning the past three years. Nik is happy to announce that the new songs have been made into a brand new record.

Reissued as part of the “30 Years Of Excellence In Sound” series, a year-long programme marking the 30th Anniversary of Adrian Sherwood‟s ON-U Sound label When African Head Charge released their fourth album „Off The Beaten Track‟ in 1986, it was a newly remade ensemble. Lead by percussionist Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah, the band included live drums, melodica, keyboards and bass backed by samples and tape loops. In 1986, the sampler was a new toy; the use of it here is so fresh and progressive that the resulting album still sounds modern and innovative today. When it was released, it sounded like nothing else around at the time – the combination of fat beats, dub, psychedelia and ethnic chants was to provide the template which many lesser lights attempted to emulate over the ensuing years. „Off The Beaten Track‟ is both a seminal recording in the use of sound-bite technology and an excellent example of the integration of live instrumentation and programmed music. Produced by Adrian Sherwood and featuring Bonjo Iyabingho Noah, Eskimo, A.V.Scott, Skip McDonald, Dr. Pablo, and Jah Wobble. Originally released as ON-U LP40 in 1986. This edition features previously unreleased bonus track „Good Things‟. “Not only is it a departure for On-U Sound, but a landmark album for what was to become the whole new ethnobeat strand within the commercial category of what we now know as „world music‟.” - Steve Barker (On The Wire, BBC). “For anyone who finds much of what they hear today underwhelming, give „Off The Beaten Track‟ a spin and listen to our weird, wonderful world with new ears” – PopMatters. Reissued as part of the “30 Years Of Excellence In Sound” series, a year-long programme marking the 30th Anniversary of Adrian Sherwood’s ON-U Sound label. This re-issue of the very first album released by On-U Sound marks a fitting start to the planned series of releases to celebrate the label’s 30th Anniversary. 1981's eponymous debut by post-punk "supergroup" The New Age Steppers provided a fertile breeding ground for the cross-pollination of punk experimentation and dub sensibilities, and mapped out the innovative and culturally exciting musical territory for which On-U Sound would become legendary. Over the course of four albums that featured members of The Slits, The Roots Radics, The Pop Group, Rip, Rig and Panic and Aswad, The New Age Steppers were not so much a band as a loosely knit collective of musicians from some of Britain's best avant-garde post-punk/funk bands. Cut-and-paste dub mixing, heady psychedelic swirls, adventurous sound collages, robust reggae rhythms, and spiralling, off-centre vocals all contributed to the unique music created by Adrian Sherwood and his Steppers. Their sound was among the most exhilarating and consistently challenging to come out of Britain during the early post-punk era. Originally released as ON-U LP1 in 1981, this new edition includes four bonus tracks previously unreleased outside Japan. Personnel includes Viv Albertine, Mark Stewart, Ari Up, Crucial Tony, John Waddington, Steve Beresford, and Style Scott. Tracklisting :1. Fade Away 2. Radial Drill 3. State Assembly 4. Reissued as part of the “30 Years Of Excellence In Sound” series, a year-long programme marking the 30th Anniversary of Adrian Sherwood‟s ON-U Sound label. Creation Rebel‟s „Starship Africa‟ is the greatest sci-fi dub soundtrack never put to film. Produced and arranged by Adrian Sherwood and created by some of the greats from the On-U Sound stable of musicians (including Doctor Pablo, Crucial Tony, Style Scott and Eskimo Fox), it is one of the finest moments of British Dub. Compared to acts as far afield as Tangerine Dream and the Grateful Dread, „Starship Africa‟ is a truly psychedelic dub experience, spread over just two tracks (albeit broken down into five and four movements apiece), that stands among the most intriguing of all Sherwood‟s earliest creations. This album is a criminally underrated masterpiece and essential headphone listening. Originally released as in 1980 and later re-issued on On-U Sound as ON-ULP8 in 1982, this new edition also includes four bonus tracks previously unreleased outside Japan. "...A stone killer...The album still awaits recognition as the only possible soundtrack for William Gibson's as yet unfilmed 'Neuromancer'..." - The Wire. The press never stops with last year's single "How You Like Me Now," as it is now the theme song for a new show called 'Intentional Talk' on MLB Network. The song plays 5-6 times throughout the show, so there should be a nice pick-meup in sales with baseball fans.
Featured on Stereogum, Under the Radar, Los Angeles Times, My Old Kentucky Blog, and tons of other places on the web. Upcoming press highlights also include an LA Weekly interview and a 'Buzz Artist' feature in Spin.
Sirius XM’s ‘The Spectrum’ added Bell X1’s “Velcro” to their rotation. ‘The Spectrum’ is one of the more conservatively programmed Triple A stations and tend to keep tracks on rotation for a good while.
