NATIONAL release date: CD/LP 06.26.2012 Grammy nominees, The Soundtrack of Our Lives (TSOOL), return with Throw It to the Universe, the band’s 6th, and final, full-length album. Throw It To The Universe contains all of the elements that TSOOL is known for – psychedelic rock, pop hooks, cryptic lyrics and nods to 60s and 70s guitar rock. Though the band is calling this their swan song, in terms of recording together, the songs reflect a band that is still vibrant and searching for the perfect chord. Highlights include the opening, title track, with the appropriate line, “We say hello to say goodbye. We are the Soundtrack of Our Lives”. “Where’s the Rock”, “You Are the Beginning”, “When We Fall”, and “Faster Than The Speed of Light”, are all standouts. “Busy Land”, sounds like a track Pete Townshend might have written for the Who’s “A Quick One”, if he had been looking for a song about “little white dwarves,” coming to terms with the modern world. BACKGROUND “Live In Europe”, the new CD by Jeffrey Gaines, was recorded during his 25-city tour of Europe with Joe Jackson (Autumn 2010). Lorn returns with a new full-length album, his debut on Ninja Tune, and it’s a huge stride forward since “Nothing Else” (released on Brainfeeder, June 2010). Listening back to his first album, Lorn says it now seems “cold and strict.” “Ask The Dust,” on the other hand, is “haunted, oily, smeared,” and with this description he captures something of the intensely felt, visceral aliveness of the music. If Milwaukee-based Lorn began his musical career as a poet of alienation, then “Ask The Dust” (named after the 1939 proto-Beat classic novel of the same name by John Fante) sees his music develop a more human energy. In particular, the use of his own singing voice (a process which began on the last track of “Nothing Else,” “What’s The Use”), which has added a new dimension to his often crunching and brutal but never less than beautiful electronic music. Take “Weigh Me Down,” where Lorn comes surprisingly close to glitched-out soul music. It would be easy to overlook while reaching for muscular superlatives, but his music is also supremely melodic, where a tune like “The Well” (ostensibly “a soundtrack to being buried alive”) is memorable for a melody that nags at your brain long after the music has stopped. “Dead Dogs” combines spectral choirs with explosive drumming, (one of three tracks with live drumming). “Chhurch” combines the feel of early electro with Lorn’s own highly developed aesthetic (originally written on tour, Gonja Sufi came up with lyrics to accompany it, but never recorded them anywhere else save his iPhone). But it’s on a tune like “Ghosst” that he shows the sheer energy and raw drive he commands. It is exhilarating and slightly terrifying all at once. Other highlights include, "This," a wipe of a hand across a chalkboard, so to speak. A simple sequence to reset things, a mantra to calm the nerves. "Diamond," was among the first written for 'Ask The Dust,' while Lorn was still up in northern Wisconsin, the last surge in his isolation, over the expanse of the lake in the house his grandfather built Since the release of Nothing Else, Lorn has toured the world alongside the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs, Amon Tobin, and Gonja Sufi to name a few. Chris O’Leary cut his teeth on six years as singer, harp player and front man for Levon Helm’s Barnburners and seven years in the U.S. Marine Corps (infantry squad leader in the Gulf War) — you’ve got to be pretty tough and competent to handle either of those assignments, and Chris came through with flying colors. International tours with the Barnburners and an extended musical residency in New Orleans’ French Quarter bring a wealth of influences to his singing, playing and songwriting. Fire Records are proud to be reissuing the complete works of Rainer Ptacek, the phenomenal and much beloved slide guitarist from Tucson, Arizona, who originated Giant Sand's sound from the band's inception, as well as creating many remarkable recordings as a solo artist and with his own band, Das Combo, before succumbing to brain cancer on November 12 1997. The reissues start with "The Inner Flame", a compilation of accomplished and remarkably diverse artists who were brought together to honour Rainer's inspirational work, featuring talents such as Robert Plant & Jimmy Page, Emmylou Harris, Evan Dando, PJ Harvey, Victoria Williams, Vic Chesnutt, Jonathan Richman, Madeleine Peyroux and of course Giant Sand. Originally released in 1997, the album was conceived as both a tribute and benefit album, with the proceeds going towards Ptacek's medical bills. Reissued now as a celebration of his remarkable life and extraordinary talent, extra tracks have been added by the likes of Lucinda Williams, Grandaddy, Chuck Prophet, John Wesley Harding and Calexico's Joey Burns & John Convertino. Mick Karn died on the 4th of January, 2011. Initiated by Peter Murphy, Karn's final work during his lifetime saw the unexpected resurrection of the duo's cult mid-1980s project, Dali's Car. Conceived during the final months of Karn's life, the resulting 5 track MCD recalls the exotic Eastern-tinged Art Pop sensibility of Dali's Car's fondly remembered 1984 album, The Waking Hour, while also possessing an elegiac quality which fittingly evokes the sad circumstances under which the material was written and recorded. Featuring significant contributions from friends and regular musical collaborators Steve Jansen, Jakko M Jacsyzk and Theo Travis, InGladAloneness begins with the life-affirming King Cloud and Sound Cloud. Public Image Ltd can confirm that their first new album in 20 years ‘This Is PiL’ released on May 28th will contain 12 tracks (tracklisting below). The album is self-funded by PiL and will be released on PiL’s own label ‘PiL Official’ via Cargo UK Distribution. All the new material was recorded in the UK last year at Steve Winwood’s studio in the Cotswolds. John Lydon talks about ‘This Is PiL’: “Well, 12 songs, where do I begin? Everything and anything that attracts my attention. ‘One Drop’ is about my early youth in Finsbury Park. Fantastic! Hello, we’re all teenagers don’t you forget it! At any age, stay young. ‘Lollipop Opera’ is basically a beautiful bunch of background noise and music to sum up Britain and all its wonderful ambidextrousness! ‘The Room I Am In’ well that’s about drugs and council flats. The majority of the album’s material was first conceived during an idyllic 10-day retreat in Northern Vermont, where the group were able to explore their ideas in a setting that fostered introspection and inspiration. Recording commenced immediately upon returning to Chicago at both Idful (now defunct) and the then new Soma Electronic Music Studios. Millions... was the first studio recording to feature David Pajo who fill the position vacated by Bundy K. Brown in late 1994. “Djed”...seems less a single piece than a highlight reel. Christian Fennesz, David Daniell and Tony Buck (The Necks) are three of the most recognized and respected players in experimental music from around the globe. In 2009 the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, TN brought the three together and encouraged them to collaborate at the festival. The aptly named Knoxville documents the results of that first collaboration. Recorded on February 7th, 2009, Fennesz (guitar and electronics), Daniell (guitar) and Buck (drums) channel their collective energies into a darkly atmospheric piece of music that ebbs and flows with remarkable cohesion. With Night Dust, his debut for Immune, Caminiti shifted the focus away from amplifier worship and the desert themes his work is often associated with to focus on texture, fractured dub techniques, and spacious electric guitar compositions. Recorded entirely to 4 track cassette, Caminiti embraced the limitations of the medium and warped the original sound sources with analog electronics, searching for beauty in the hazy and degraded sounds. Inspiration came from smokey blue hues and washed out lights of some of the 80’s best vampire movies which contributes to the visually evocative narrative flow the album possesses. Guitars moan like horns through empty city streets, vocal samples erode in devotional bliss, and webs of synthesizer float like mist. The sounds of Caminiti’s guitar become disembodied as intricate fingerpicking techniques give way to percussive thuds, streaks of feedback, and textural crumble.
