NICK LOWE THE OLD MAGIC
NATIONAL RELEASE DATE: CD/LP: 09.13.2011 Of Nick Lowe, NPR once observed, “Few musicians get better with age, Nick Lowe is an exception.” While it’s undeniable that his last album At My Age garnered Lowe the best reviews – dubbed “utterly fantastic,” by The Village Voice – of his career and his best one-week sales in the soundscan era, there is little doubt that he has always been at the forefront of modern music. Be it his production work with The Damned, Elvis Costello, The Pretenders or his stoneclassic solo albums Jesus of Cool or Labour of Lust, Nick has always set the standard for smart, switchblade-sharp pop music. MATES OF STATE MOUNTAINTOPS
bark119 CD/LP+MP3
STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 13, 2011 Mates of State have made a new album called Mountaintops. You already love Jason and Kori’s unmistakable music, or perhaps you’ve managed to miss out or have simply misunderstood just how great – and yes, influential – they and their sound and their songs are. You throw this record on the stereo and the first thing you notice is the energy and force of it. Go slightly deeper and you find the song-craft. You find that Kori is one of the best female singers in modern music (and Jason is also no slouch). You notice the effortless way their voices harmonize and volley back and forth, the movements within the song, the way they move from upbeat to pastoral so fluidly that you don’t perceive it happening. Through the years, the textures have become more intricate, deeper. Song-wise, all of the big ideas come to the surface: hope, grief, regret, gratitude, fate, the inevitability of change, the redemption of change, not carrying around the garbage of the past. There is a melancholy to much of their music that is sometimes ignored, and that often marks some of their best moments. Switching between the melancholy and buoyantly hopeful is another specialty of theirs, one that they really nail on Mountaintops.

I know I have to be careful of what I write here, because it may be repeated to Jason and Kori a few hundred times, but I hear a lot of ABBA in their songs. Like ABBA, they write sophisticated boy-girl pop performed so flawlessly that you think it must be easy (but it’s not easy). I hear some of the early work of Giorgio Moroder, and I hear some of the more timeless 80s pop, like ‘This Is The Day’ by The The. I hear some classic Kirsty MacColl in ‘Sway’. I hear some of Nick Lowe’s effortless appropriation of classic pop forms. Sometimes I hear the Valley Girl soundtrack, one of my all-time favorites, in a song like ‘Basement Money.’ ‘Desire’ could have been a big hit for The Carpenters. They touch on so much of what has been great in the last 50 years of pop music, all viewed through the Mates of State filter. Most of all, they have actually built their own sound. They sound like themselves. Sometimes I hear a new band and think ‘What a Mates Of State rip-off!’ They have been carving out their place in the indie rock world since the late 90s, as two people playing complex songs that sound like five people playing a simple song. That is what the great ones can do.

PAJAMA CLUB
Featuring Sharon and Neil Finn
The debut album from Neil Finn’s latest incarnation, ‘Pajama Club’ is a funked up romp through a sea of electric guitars and keyboards, meandering over ESG style drums and bass. The trademark Finn song structure and lyrical delivery are still to the fore, giving weight to the infectious grooves and unforgettable melodies on this new eleven track album.
STREET DATE: SEPT 13th 2011 A NEW BAND FEATURING SHARON AND NEIL FINN AND 11 NEW SONGS
Other members of the band include Sharon Finn; bass player, co-writer, and Sean Donnelly – keyboards, co-writer and co-producer with Neil Finn. Neil also plays all drums on the album, another first. The album has been mastered by Bob Ludwig and recorded at Finn’s commercial recording entity in New Zealand, Roundhead Studios, off and on, over the past twelve months. The Pajama Club began as a private after-dinner racket to fill an empty nest. With their two sons, musicians in their own right, off and away into the big old world, Neil and Sharon found themselves home alone with time, a sensible supply of red wine, copious musical instruments and a 16-track tape recorder on their hands. The tub-thumping ‘Tell Me What You Want’ was first to find its feet: a heavy breathing tete-a-tete that opened a range of vocally. Various blends of breathiness and falsetto led Neil and Sharon deeper into new territory, from the whispers and shouts of ‘Can’t Put It Down Until It Ends’ to the joyously messed-up soul chorus of ‘Daylight’. Some of it is downright spooky. ‘The Game We Love To Play’ is all eerie disassociation and adrenaline; fear and excitement. ‘From a Friend To A Friend’ is a mysterious scenario of strangers and headlights; simmering apprehension and hopes of redemption. The glam-stomping ‘Diamonds In Her Eyes’ is perhaps as close to a love song as this Club gets, a celebration of togetherness with a decidedly angular delivery. ‘Go Kart’ is a girls-and-boys meeting of a different kind, a gleeful thrasher about kicking ass. The latter is one of two tunes featuring sole studio interloper Johnny Marr. Pajama Club is a fat sounding record with a depth, energy and enthusiasm to match any of Finn’s previous outings, which include multiplatinum success in North America, the United Kingdom and Australasia with Split Enz, Crowded House, Finn Brothers and Neil Finn solo albums.

YOURS UNTIL THE BITTER END
“Yours Until the Bitter End ” is The Bloody Hollies follow up to the highly praised “Who to Trust, Who to Kill, Who to Love” which was released in 2007 on Alive Naturalsound. Many who are familiar with the band’s sound know them by their trademark murder-themed blues/rock anthems that remind listeners of the 60’s and 70’s golden age of rock & roll. The new album still embraces the dark side of raw garage punk, but comes armed with a more eclectic array of songwriting and musicianship. But don’t let the touches of organ, violin, and xylophone fool you, the band’s hybrid of blues and rock & roll continue to shine more impressively than ever. The Bloody Hollies recorded in San Diego, but enlisted the expertise of Jim Diamond in Detroit, a familiar friend of the band’s that helped bring the sound of this record to its full potential. “Yours Until the Bitter End” is a work that reflects a lengthy career that fully embraces The Bloody Hollies’ vast influences while at the same time maintaining the band’s unique sound of explosive, over-driven mayhem balanced with intelligently thought-out songwriting. What is most impressive about The Bloody Hollies, however, is the diversity of their strengths, ranging from 70’s classic rock, Americana blues, to an even power-pop songwriting style. Wesley Doyle’s voice is stronger than ever and continues to shine, complimenting Joseph Horgen’s unique slide blues guitar style. The rhythm section of Matthew Bennett (drums) and Erik Noorgard (bass guitar) are as solid as ever and work together perfectly on this record which will go down as The Bloody Hollies’ most impressive to date. New York was wearing on Kyle Wilson, lead singer & songwriter for the Brooklyn-based quintet Milagres. So he took off, away from the city and his band and his issues… all the way to the coldest, most remote part of British Columbia where he could get some space and breathe. As so often happens in life, he got a little more space than he bargained for – during a rock climbing trip he fell and ended up spending months bedridden with a back injury. Before he left New York, Wilson had thought he might leave the band behind entirely. But during the long days of his recovery he found himself writing songs again, and he realized he wanted to go back. Upon his return to NYC, Wilson drafted Fraser McCulloch (bass, backing vocals, keys) into his new vision of Milagres, sharing with him the arrangements that he dreamt of while recovering from his injury. These demos were then refined with the addition of Eric Schwortz (guitar, backing vocals, percussion), Chris Brazee (piano/keys) and Steven Leventhal (drums, percussion), evolving into what would become the new groupʼs first LP, Glowing Mouth. The musical scope of the album is big and due to the piano-based melodies and soaring falsettos, early press has compared the band to artists as diverse as Grizzly Bear and Prince, demonstrating the wide breadth of Milagres material. The first single, "Glowing Mouth", is a slow-burner made for dancing close on a hot summer night, whereas "Here To Stay" has a keyboard hook that wonʼt let you sleep. Kyle Wilson has a knack for writing dreamy story songs that also pack a punch in both chorus and melody. Songs like "Gentle Beast" and "Gone" suck you in and then haunt you for days afterwards – this is an album that stays with you. Glowing Mouth is set-to-be released on Kill Rock Stars on Sept. 13, 2011. According to KRS boss Portia Sabin, Milagres is the first band she has signed to the label sight-unseen. “I just fell in love with the album and lost my head,” Sabin says. “Itʼs not a good chance to take, signing a band without seeing them live, but when I finally did it was totally worth it – they were even better live than on record, which is hard to do.”

Jonathan Wilson Gentle Spirit
National Release Date: CD/LP: 09/13/2011
KEY FACTS • Uncut proclaims Jonathan Wilson the “new King of Laurel Canyon” • Guests on the record include members of The Black Crowes, The Jayhawks, and Vetiver • Features singles “Natural Rhapsody” and “Desert Raven” • Includes download code for bonus material
Jonathan Wilson’s music is steeped equally in the woodsy contours of his Blue Ridge origins and the atmospheric guitar reveries of Neil Young and Quicksilver Messenger Service. Gentle Spirit, an expansive double set conceived specifically for vinyl, was recorded to analog tape and is remarkably evocative of that golden late ‘60s, early ‘70s period when rural and urban sensibilities colluded to produce some of rock’s most imperishable recordings. Recorded at his former studio in Laurel Canyon, the location of the very scene Wilson is credited with revitalizing through his personal studio and well-known jam sessions, Gentle Spirit has been passed hand to hand on Sharpie-labeled CDRs, among select musicians and music lovers for some time. In addition to making his own music, Wilson is also a producer, engineer and custom guitar-maker. Whether he’s producing young artists like the band Dawes or collaborating with renowned artists like Erykah Badu, Jackson Browne, Robbie Robertson or Elvis Costello, Wilson is as dedicated, visionary and soulful as anyone in music today, qualities that can be heard in the many textures, layers and easy born nuances prevalent throughout Gentle Spirit.

ASTRONAUTALIS
THIS IS OUR SCIE NCE FFINC030 CD/LP : ASTRONAUTALIS THIS IS OUR SCIENCE RELEASE DATE: SEPTEMBER 13, 2011 Once you find out that Astronautalis was born to a Texas train man with a nose crooked from bar fights and a pretty Kentucky girl who ran away from home at 17 to become a photographer, it becomes clear that he didn’t stumble into the life of a drifter, he was born into it. With a poet uncle who lived off horse betting and hitchhiking, grandfathers who were spies, sailors, and test pilots, and over 500,000 miles of touring under his own belt, you have to wonder where the tales in Astronautalis’ music end and the life of Andy Bothwell begins. Currently settled (for now) in Minneapolis, by way of Seattle, by way of Dallas by way of Jacksonville Beach, FL; Bothwell has spent almost every waking moment of the last 7 years, on the road, playing shows, earning scars, collecting/ giving tattoos, grinding out a cult like fan base, and living up to his proud, storied, and whiskey soaked blood line. Having started in music over 15 years ago as a battle rapper, Astronautalis’ roots are planted firmly in hip-hop. However, the sounds and styles on his albums are an animal not so easily caged, and his latest release, “This Is Our Science” is no exception to that tradition of wild genre bending. Like previous records Bothwell uses that limitless approach to aid in his vivid storytelling, but where “This is Our Science” takes a turn from tradition, is in the subject matter itself. While previous records read like historical fiction, documenting the lives of the bygone, the footnotes, and the forgotten, “This is Our Science” is pure autobiography. While there are flash references to scientists from the Age of Enlightenment and old dead French mountaineers, these ghosts serve merely as parallels, rest stops in the story of the last 7 years of Bothwell’s romance with the road. To help shape this memoir, Bothwell called in help from the cadre of musical friends he has made in his travels across 4 continents, and created a sound as diverse as the cast that behind it. Once again under the guidance of Grammy nominated producer John Congleton (Modest Mouse, Bill Callahan, St. Vincent), “This is Our Science” finds rock darlings like Tegan Quinn (Tegan & Sara), Radical Face, (Electric President), members of Midlake & The Riverboat Gamblers all waltzing in time to the work of P.O.S. (Rhymesayers), Alias (Anticon/ Sage Francis), Cecil Otter (Wugazi), Lazerbeak (Doomtree), and more of indie hip-hop’s finest. The resulting album is the full realization of everything Bothwell has been chased after for 7 years. Neither a rap record, nor a rock record, it is a work that finally captures the vein popping intensity and high melodrama of his famous live shows. All the while, maintaining the steadfast literary tradition and masterful storytelling of his previous studio albums. From the pounding drums and thick synths of the record’s opener, “The River, The Woods”, the roots in rap are clear. But, that foundation quickly crumbles in the dark electronic gospel of the title track, “This is Our Science”, and the record blazes into the thick of Bothwell’s vagabond life with heart breaking road ballad of “Measure the Globe”. While songs like undeniably catchy, “Contrails” (featuring Tegan Quinn) and the epic rock anthem, “Secrets On Our Lips” carry an astounding pop sensibility, there is something unnerving behind those big choruses and driving drums. In fact, there is something hiding behind every corner of this record, and much like the road Astronautalis travelled to make it, there is no map, no guide book, no way to prepare yourself, all you can do is press on forward and see what is waiting for you just around the bend. "Just as the Rhymesayers and Anticon collectives persuaded adventurous rock fans to explore hip-hop, Astronautalis may just turn a few rap fans on to the sounds of American Gothic" - NPR.org "The spastic ferocity with which he dives into his catalogue is something unparalleled in hip hop." - URB

His debut album Skanky Skanky was released in January 2009, this was followed by a Fabric live mix album and a lot of requests for his production skills with everyone from Major Lazer to Grandmaster Flash getting in touch. Toddla T's second album ‘Watch Me Dance’ is a bold step forward. Fans of Skanky Skanky will find plenty that will please them but for the countless thousands of clubbers who know Toddla T the DJ but haven't heard his productions this second album may come as a surprise. "I've been busiest in the last two years as a DJ, so of course this album has a big dose of the sounds and production techniques that I'm out there representing in the clubs every weekend, but if you're looking for tops-off jungle or 4x4 bassline tearouts you won't find them here. This is definitely still a record for clubbers, but it's the one they'll listen to at home with their mates or every day on the way to work" In ‘Watch Me Dance’ Toddla has created a dubwise, street-soul masterpiece. In a typically precocious reference to records that were made when he was 4 and 10 years old respectively Toddla sums it up. "A bit of the Soul from Soul II Soul Club Classics and a bit of the Left-field from Leftism, I've been listening to those now and again, they took in a whole load of club music and made an album that summed something up and were great to listen to at the same time." In ensuring ‘Watch Me Dance’ was everything Toddla envisaged it could be he’s carefully selected an impressive line up of friends, peers and musical icons to guest vocal, coproduce, remix, co-write with him on the album. Names including previous collaborator Roots Manuva, fellow DJ, producer and remixer Skream, Ms Dynamite, Ross Orton, Wayne Marshall, Donaeo, Roisin Murphy and of course Shola Ama.

A double-A of obession and alienation, of getting lost in the music and struggling to find your way back, the anglo-czech artist based in Berlin shows once again that there can be more to being a singer-songwriter than an acoustic guitar and a winsome smile. First track “Pretend” is, in Emika’s own words, “about all sides of fakeness, disbelief, dancing on the head of a pin. It begins with a synth I made to feel like a heartbeat, and ends with psychotic hi-hats playing a melody which will come get you while you sleep.” Really, it’s hard to describe it better than that. “Professional Loving,” on the other hand, is about the way in which the music industry uses “friendship” as a form of control, the fragile vocal delivered over a powerful surge of bass and oscillating keys. Remixes come from all quarters. Berlin experimentalists Brandt Brauer Frick turn in a stripped back 8 minute mix, operating on the borders between classical music and techno. Kyle Hall’s techno is, of course, born from the wellspring of Detroit and his take on “Pretend” reflects this. DJ Rashad’s more frenetic interpretation, on the other hand, brings us closer to a Chicago take on witch-house. In an age of idnetikit pop starlets Emika has always stood out from the pack. A hugely talented producer who uses her voice and her own obsessions to craft something unique, her combination of frailty and power has had her tipped by everyone from Resident Advisor to The Guardian.

Tracklist
A Visual Acuity. You Could Be Forgiven For Thinking That. B Twitch (It Grows & Grows). Mimetic.
Raffertie releases his first EP for Ninja Tune and it instantly establishes this young producer as a name to watch in electronic music. Not for Raffertie the arid choices of “post-dubstep” (how to sell out and when?). A young music producer of exceptional confidence and rigour, Raffertie instead makes electronic music to explore the boundaries of the possible. The “Visual Acuity” EP displays newfound maturity whilst keeping the nuances and character that mark him out as a true individual. Both intensely cerebral and stupidly banging, “Visual Acuity” may fake being an aural equivalent of ADHD, but there is purpose to every twist and turn in this huge tune, the way that Raffertie pulls the music in and out of focus givng rise to its title. “You Could Be Forgiven For Thinking That” is more visceral than the opener, shot through with unexpected emotion. “Twitch” needs to played on very large speakers to be fully appreciated, Raffertie claiming that it is a piece “to be felt as much as heard.” Despite its name, “Mimetic” copies nothing, instead creating a feeling very much like being in the head of a reveller as she waits for The Drop. Benjamin Stefanski aka Raffertie has never been one to be tied down to any particular genre or scene. He has experimented with numerous styles, displaying the depth and sophistication of his production skill across releases for Planet Mu, Black Acre and Super for which he has received accolades from the likes of Simon Reynolds, Huw Stephens and Mary Anne Hobbes, who first championed Raffertie on her BBC Radio 1 Experimental show in 2008. Recognised both as an innovative producer and stand out DJ, the young talent has a reputation for performances filled with his typical dynamic energy that has seen him play across Europe; from Fabric to Space, Ibiza.

Publicity Where are the Arms marks a brilliant return to songwriting for musical polymath Gabriel Kahane. Following fast upon his recent successes in the worlds of classical and theater music, Kahane has turned his talents to the creation of a stunning pop album. With its vivid lyrical foreground, swelling melodies and prismatic harmonies, Where are the Arms is both sophisticated and welcoming. And while the intricate chamber arrangements on songs like “Charming Disease” and “Barn Song” betray his gifts as an orchestrator, the album never loses sight of its primary focus on songcraft with fierce attention throughout given to melody and storytelling. In a few short years, the Brooklyn-based Kahane has already established a national reputation, having been commissioned by institutions ranging from the Kronos Quartet and Los Angeles Philharmonic to the Public Theater. Now, in a concise eleven song set, Where are the Arms shows Kahane in his element, offering up a musical landscape that is at once cinematic, theatrical, direct, and hauntingly beautiful. Co-produced with Casey Foubert, the wizard multi-instrumentalist best known for his work with Sufjan Stevens, Where are the Arms is colored with subtle production flourishes that never steal focus, while allowing the songs to unfold with elegant ease. Drawing on an all-star cast of friends, Kahane’s core band features Rob Moose (Antony and the Johnsons, Bon Iver, The National), Matt Johnson ( Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright), and Foubert, together with dozens of other notable guest appearances, including folk darlings Chris Thile and Aoife O’Donovan. “An all around dazzling performance... GENRE : ROCK/PSYCHEDELIC FILE UNDER: “W” Wooden Shjips Wooden Shjips, as it is today, started in 2006. The band self released a 10” and 7” that year and started playing shows shortly thereafter. Prior to 2006, Wooden Shjips was an experiment in primitive and minimalist rock. After it imploded, Ripley Johnson, guitar and vocals, assembled the current lineup of Dusty Jermier on bass, Nash Whalen on organ, and Omar Ahsanuddin on drums. West marks the first time the band recorded in a proper studio, as well as the first time with an engineer (Phil Manley). All previous recordings, either self-released, for Holy Mountain, or Mexican Summer were done more piecemeal in the band’s rehearsal studio. West was recorded and mixed in six days at Lucky Cat Studios in San Francisco. It was mastered by Sonic Boom at Blanker Unisinn, Brooklyn, with additional mastering by Heba Kadry at The Lodge in New York. The over riding theme for the album (as indicated by the title) is the American West, and all of the mythology, romanticism, and idealism that it embodies. The band members grew up on the East Coast, so for a long time the history and literature of the West was an abstraction and a fascination for them. Part of the allure of the West, which is part of the myth, is the concept of Manifest Destiny, the vastness, and the possibilities for reinvention, which is not to say that is what each song is specifically about, but it was very much an undercurrent during the songwriting of the album. The artwork also touches on the same theme by using an iconic structure that is both a gateway in a literal and metaphorical sense. It is easy to see why these would appeal to Wooden Shjips, as their music lends itself to exploration. It is both transformative and transporting, the sum being far greater than it’s parts. The steady driving rhythms are the elliptical motion machine driven by the often thick and distorted guitar lines, melodic and boundless. Where they may lead cannot be anticipated but following them is exhilarating. It is all about getting there, the destination, while the experience of getting there is an adventure. It is the guitar lines that guide both the listener and the band on the literal and metaphorical journey into the vastness. The ghostly vocals, obscured by dense layers of instruments surrounding them, are alluring with their airy mystery. This elusive quality further draws the listener in, while they attempt to grasp at their meaning. While indebted to both the psych music of the ‘60s and mid-‘70s, electric Neil Young, and even the induced travels of Spacemen 3, the Wooden Shjips’ music is modern and in every way their own. West is an epic journey to the edge and beyond.

GENRE : FOLK/AMERICANA FILE UNDER: “J” Jones, Glenn Glenn Jones, a 30+ year devotee of the so-called “American Primitive” school of acoustic steel string guitarists, has been playing guitar since the age of 14. He formed Boston pysch-rock band, Cul de Sac, in 1989 and led it on its 20 year journey to nowhere, leaving nine albums in its wake, including collaborations with guitarist John Fahey and Can’s Damo Suzuki. Jones released This Is The Wind That Blows It Out, his first album of acoustic 6- and 12-string guitar instrumentals in 2004, and followed it with Against Which The Sea Continually Beats (2007) and Barbecue Bob In Fishtown (2009). All three albums were released on the Strange Attractors Audio House label. The Wanting, Glenn Jones’ first album for Thrill Jockey, was recorded in a fourth floor apartment on Commonwealth Avenue, Allston, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston, overlooking the commuter train line. If you listen carefully to the record, you can occasionally hear trains going by in the background. Reuben Son recorded the album between December 12, 2010, and April 20, 2011. The Wanting was mixed and mastered by long time collaborator Matthew Azevedo. Simply put, The Wanting is a collection of original compositions for solo acoustic steel string guitar, six-string, 10-string and bottleneck, and 5-string open-back banjo. Jones has written extensively about the leading lights of the American Primitive guitar style, namely John Fahey (with whom he was friends for nearly 25 years), and Robbie Basho (Jones was friends with the guitarist until his untimely death in 1986, and hosted Basho’s final tour of the East Coast). Jones was also close friends with Jack Rose and they toured together in the U.S., Canada, Europe and UK. Jones guests on several of Jack’s albums, including Luck in the Valley. The Things That We Used to Do, a DVD featuring hour-long solo sets from each artist, and a pair of duets, was issued in April 2010 for the Strange Attractors label. Jones has also performed with Peter Lang, Steffen Basho-Junghans, Cian Nugent, James Blackshaw, Paul Metzger, Peter Walker, Meg Baird, Harris Newman, Sean Smith, MV + EE, Dredd Foole, Tom Carter, and many others. PRAISE FOR GLENN JONES : “… an incredibly adept fingerstyle guitarist whose technique always remains in service of the song… His vigorous leaps are daring but never reckless, and nearly always sublime.” – Utne Reader “… captivating… Jones’ slide work on the resonator guitar sounds especially meaty, and when all six, and sometimes 12, strings start chiming as he fingerpicks, the effect is shimmering.” – Harp “Jones has a solid grasp of the fundamentals, not just of his instrument, but also of music-making in general. He obtains attractive and varied tones from his several open-tuned acoustic guitars, and fashions them into involving, carefully drawn and skillfully paced audio narratives that impart emotions ranging from sweet affection to complicated grief… declare[s] Jones to be a musician whose moment has arrived.” – Dusted

GENRE : ROCK/DARK AMBIENT/DRONE FILE UNDER: “B” Barn Owl Lost in the Glare is Barn Owl’s second album for Thrill Jockey, and follows quickly on the heels of their acclaimed 12” EP Shadowland. Like Shadowland the album was recorded to tape by Phil Manley in San Francisco’s Lucky Cat Studios. Lost in the Glare is made up of material composed over the course of a year and recorded in sessions throughout the winter of 2011. At the heart of the album’s sound is the dual guitar interaction between Caminiti and Porras, a spiraling web of interlocking gestures that give way to bone rattling, monolithic progressions and dusty drifts. The mostly finger picked guitars weave in and out of each other in precise movements that recall the hypnotic influence of American minimalists. The harmonium that was prevalent on previous recordings has been replaced on Lost in the Glare with the undulations of a Farfisa organ. The songs here are deep, cosmic excursions. Rich in dynamics, the record possesses a transcendental tone through both a densely layered combination of electric and acoustic instruments and walls of melting amplifiers and feedback alchemy. The lines between strict structure and ordered chaos blur as thirdeye opening e-bowed drones explode like beams of light and corrode into crumbling distortion, baking tones that sizzle like brittle bones left in the desert sun. Between rhythmic, turning strums that recall Saharan twilight, radiant synth swells and choral clusters that echo the desolation of deep space, the duo’s sound has no doubt ascended from it’s desert-rock roots into a new, beaming realm. Evocative as they are, the sounds here aren’t easy to tie down to particular imagery. A myriad of influences from blues and raga to the guitar style of Northern Mali most often associated with the Touareg people meld into a new universal sound that can only be described as cosmic and sublime. In addition to guitars and organ, Lost in the Glare features Juno 60, manipulated cassette tapes, tanpura and gong played by Michael Elrod (The Alps, Date Palms), Steve Dye on bass clarinet (Portraits), and the crucial contribution of drummer Jacob Felix Heule. Heule’s playing is paradoxically heavy and commanding, subtle and elegant. Morphing from hypnotic processions to abstract ritualistic clatter and orchestral swells, his addition to Barn Owl takes the sound to new heights.

Arabrot playing their purest, wildest, ugliest rocknroll! Recorded and mixed by Steve Albini! Fiftieth release on Fysisk Format! Solar Anus is the fifth album by Norwegian noise rock act Arabrot. While the first four Arabrot albums showed a staggering level of ambition and a sense of musical dramaturgy like no other band, Solar Anus shows a band that has found its form, the ambitions and latent genius of the past has come into light. All of the eight tracks that make out Solar Anus are recorded and mixed by Steve Albini, known for his work with Pixies, Nirvana and his own bands Big Black and Shellac. Albini's stripped down approach to recording fit well with Arabrot's arrangements, consisting of nothing more than drums, vocals and a baritone guitar. After finishing the main recordings Arabrot collaborator Concept. Virus infested some of the tracks with electronics, but still most of the tracks were kept clean, open and focused on the primitive force of rhythms, chords and guttural vocals spitting out filthy prose.

BUTCHER BOY - Helping Hands FORMAT - CD LABEL - Damaged Goods UPC - 5020422037328 CATALOG # - DAMGOOD373CD LIST PRICE - $17.99 Butcher Boy has existed in its current form since early 2005, but lead singer John Blain Hunt has played in various incarnations of the band since the late 1990s. Initially, Butcher Boy didn‟t have any songs; John was a resolute left-hander and could barely play guitar. But he enjoyed sending anonymous poetry to local papers under the guise of Butcher Boy in the hope of engaging the writers through their columns. Their debut album, “Profit In Your Poetry”, followed in March, to a slew of positive reviews. “Inspired by monochrome movies and bleak winters, these cello-and-viola-flecked songs transcend their Smiths, Tindersticks and Felt influences. Regret, giro-funded couplets, sensual ambiguity – it‟s all here, resurrecting a great British genre,” declared Uncut. “It‟s an album of immense subtlety and depth, the kind of record you can listen to fifty times and still discover hidden treasures on that fifty first spin,” said Drowned In Sound. “Butcher Boy operate not so much, as has been widely suggested, in the shadow of The Smiths as in the company of Tindersticks, Pulp and Lloyd Cole And The Commotions. Theirs is a literate, bohemian music nourished by the darker strains of Sixties chart pop,” added Mail On Sunday.2011 sees the band sign to Damaged Goods and will release their third album „Helping Hands‟ later this year.

We ThRee is The Raincoats' own label and we will release the album on heavyweight vinyl and CD on 13th September. Remastered from original masters. Heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. CD special edition. Liner notes by Kim Gordon. US Press campaign by Maggie from Kill Rock Stars‟ Inhouse PR. “It was The Raincoats I related to most. They seemed like ordinary people playing extraordinary music. Music that was natural that made room for cohesion of personalities. They had enough confidence to be vulnerable and to be themselves without having to take on the mantle of male rock/punk rock aggression…or the typical female as sex symbol avec irony or sensationalism”. (Kim Gordon, Sonic Youth,1993). “We just really loved what The Raincoats were doing - they were a really exciting band. I think the thing that was good about The Raincoats simply was that the tradition that they were playing in was their own and so they had an original voice. You couldn‟t ignore them - they were undeniably fascinating - the interplay between the two voices and the sound of the group was something original and that was what was exciting about them”. (Geoff Travis, Rough Trade Records, February 2009) The Raincoats tour the east coast of the USA from 16 - 26 September 2011.

STAN BUSH - Stan Bush
FORMAT - CD LABEL - Rock Candy UPC - 827565058297 CATALOG # - CANDY103 LIST PRICE -$20.99 Bush, a relative new comer to the scene, had previously fronted obscure Mid West outfit Boulder, recording an album for Elektra records, before going solo. Carving out a reputation as a handy songwriter, Bush’s demos secured him a solo deal with the giant Sony label, who figured that they might have the next Rick Springfield on their hands. In many ways they were right but ultimately such success was not forthcoming. Ushered into the studio, with producer Pat Ryan (Styx), initial sessions amounted to little. Kevin Beamish, famed for his work with REO Speedwagon, interceded, taking over knob twiddling duties. The results, though, were a triumph, allowing Stan the opportunity to deliver one of the most impressive solo albums of the era. With raspy vocals and a backing band consisting of some of the best West Coast sessions players on the scene, it remains one of the best, if largely undiscovered, AOR albums of the era. Special Limited Deluxe Collector’s Edition.
STAN BUSH & BARRAGE— Stan Bush & Barrage
FORMAT - CD LABEL - Rock Candy UPC - 827565058303 CATALOG # - CANDY104 LIST PRICE - $20.99 1987 Stan signed to the Scotti Brothers label but this time under the handle of Stan Bush & Barrage, a ruse designed, just like Bon Jovi, to toughen up his image and present a sharper, band identity to the record buying public. Produced by veteran Richie Wise and utilising a number of key session players (dubbed Barrage) including members of Black Rose, John Parr’s Band, Foreigner and Rick Springfield’s band, the music was superbly executed hook laden melodic rock sitting atop raunchy guitar work and big beefy drum ‘n bass. It is also an album notable for including ‘The Touch’, a track that was included in the soundtrack to the hit movie ‘Transformers’, helping it to become a melodic staple recognised the world over. Hailed as one of the best AOR albums of the era, Stan Bush & Barrage is a triumphant statement of intent and one that should have resulted in multiplatinum glory.Special Limited Deluxe Collector’s Edition.
THE STRAND - The Strand
FORMAT - CD LABEL - Rock Candy UPC - 827565058280 CATALOG # - CANDY102 LIST PRICE - $20.99 In keeping with Rock Candy’s penchant for exposing great, yet relatively unheralded melodic rock music, we now turn the spotlight on an obscure Los Angeles based five piece named, rather curiously, The Strand. Although the name may not be recognisable, some of the band members will be very familiar to fans of sophisticated melodic rock. The Strand’s origins can be found in a group called Rural Still Life, the very same group that spawned hugely successful multi Grammy winning West Coast AOR stars Toto. In common with Toto the band were also extremely talented players, some having backed Boz Scaggs both live and in the studio. Signed personally by Island founder Chris Blackwell (and named by him), the band’s one and only album, originally released in1980, was produced, not unsurprisingly, by long time friend and colleague, Toto drummer Jeff Porcaro. The results, as you might reasonably expect, are spectacular, boasting killer songs, jaw-dropping musicianship and superb arrangements, all bathed in a stellar production. Listen out too for vocalist Rick ‘Moon’ Calhoun, one of the greatest, yet largely overlooked, vocalists of the genre. Special Limited Deluxe Collector’s Edition.

It didn’t hurt either that they were ‘accidently’ signed to the giant, international, CBS corporation, following the absorption of an independent production company that the band had signed to earlier in their career. ‘Love Crimes’, originally released in 1980, was produced by Jack ‘Aerosmith’ Douglas in New York, at the famed Record Plant Studios. It was an album that achieved Platinum status in Canada, making inroads into the US where the band played shows with the likes of Survivor, Triumph and John Waite. Featuring an amazing vocalist (George Belanger), superbly crafted songs and a melodic yet hard hitting sound, ‘Love Crimes’ remains a classic creation. AOR, for sure, with rough-hewn guitar work, memorable melody and hugely satisfying hooks. Special Limited Deluxe Collector’s Edition.
Laura Arkana met Peter Broderick
STREET DATE: 9/13/2011
Lentemuziek
It was late March in Paris when Peter Broderick was standing by the stage selling his music after an afternoon performance at an arts center. This is when Laura Arkana met Peter Broderick for the first time. They became fast friends, strolling through the streets of Paris sharing stories and later sharing songs, passing a guitar back and forth. Broderick recounted: " I was blown away by her songs. She sings in dutch, these beautifully crafted haunting melodies, over the most steady and gorgeously fingerpicked guitar. I was in love with the music, but she was so shy about it, saying she'd hardly played the songs for anyone and had never recorded anything before." A fortnight later, Arkana flew to Berlin. They rode bikes, ate and cooked amazing food, watched movies, and in a very casual way, recorded eight of Arkana's songs, six with guitar and voice, two for solo piano. Later, Broderick added his touch: "Since she left i have fallen in love with the songs more and more, listening to them on repeat all day and working on different arrangements with instruments around the house." This is when Laura Arkana met Peter Broderick for the second time. In music. Shortly thereafter Nils Frahm mixed the album, and HUSH enthusiastically agreed to release it. The recordings are warm and unfussy. For her part, Arkana paints specific details into her song-vignettes and sings with a conversational lilt. Her finger-picking--clean, and anchored--gives rhythmic flight to a sophisticated melodic sensibility. It were as if she arrived fully formed. For his part, Broderick combines a wealth of experience with his signature restraint and sensitivity, letting the songs breathe while enhancing their textural depth and dynamics with stringed instruments, vocals, and percussion. With a discography that contains over a dozen solo titles, half a dozen collaborative titles, and appearances on well over sixty other recordings (Efterklang, M. Ward, She & HIm, Balmorhea, Laura Gibson, Loch Lomond, Blitzen Trapper, Heather Woods Broderick to name but a few) within in a time frame of five years, Broderick has demonstrated he is in a class of his own as a musician, composer, and producer. Further, any record label would do well to add him to A&R staff, having established a canny ability for attracting and spotting musical talent. From his early work as a duo with folk icon Justin Ringle of Horse Feathers, to championing neoclassical über pianist Nils Frahm (after meeting him in much the same way as Arkana a couple years ago) Broderick has proved to have something of a golden ear. With Laura Arkana met Peter Broderick (the word "met" here fulfills an international double entendre which translates to "with" in Dutch) listeners are delighted to discover song-scape like so many sprouting vines and stems intertwining with the relentlessness of Springtime in Paris, in Berlin, in where you are now.

10 long years ago Ninja Tune released the debut record by a then relatively unknown (outside their home town) afro-beat collective by the name of Antibalas. Since then the band has toured around the world multiple times. If there's a festival you've heard of... odds are they've played it (Coachella, Glastonbury, Montreux, Newport Jazz, Montreal Jazz Fest...). They've sound-clashed with The Roots and then joined them to recreate "It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back". Members of the band have appeared with The Roots on Jimmy Fallon, backed Amy Winehouse, appeared on albums by TV On The Radio, Medeski Martin & Wood, as part of the Tony aware winning Broadway musical FELA!, and won a grammy for their work with Angelique Kidjo. After a lengthy recording hiatus the band are back in it with the release of a new 12" on their own label, featuring an innovative arrangement of the Bob Marley classic "Rat Race" along with "Se Chiflo", a lively, swinging tune that revives the links between Afrocuban music and Afrobeat. To welcome them back we at Ninja Tune have also repressed limited quantities of both their Liberation Afrobeat album and their second release with us Talkatif. Get them while you still can!
