Shonna Tucker grew up in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, listening to the same salty-sweet mix of soul and country that made up the Arthur Alexander and James Carr singles recorded there decades before. She played bass in the Shoals scene from her high-school years until starting an eight-year stint as bassist and singer for the Drive-By Truckers. Following Slava & RL Grimes remixes for "What A Shame" was no easy feat. For the second single from Lidell's 2013 S/T LP, "Big Love" was a sure shot, serviced with a Q-Kidz dance team choreographed music video - Warp took it upon ourselves to find remix artists capable of the Big sound. Misty Conditions is a project that started off when Henry Collins and Richard Wilson met up in Henry’s studio a couple of years ago and jammed for a few days non-stop, enjoying the process thoroughly. The connection became so good in this period that the duo developed a fluent understanding of how each other worked, ending up as a project made across the internet, while Henry was living in France and Richard in LA. They cross pollinated by developing what each did best, Henry making and creating banks of samples and Richard creating software and effects to cut up and re-sample, passing the tracks back and forth, essentially until they felt finished.

The music here is quite different from what either of the artists are previously known for. Henry used to record as ‘Shitmat’ making fidgety jungle and Richard has recorded as ‘Burnkane’. The music here initially sounds more simplistic, it’s tempo pulled down to a head nod speed. At times the album gives the impression of a kind of futureprimitive take on Trap; rusted and distorted 808 claps and bass drums collide with exotic percussion and mangled industrial clangs, reminiscent of more recent industrial takes on techno such as Pete Swanson’s music. It’s a thoroughly unique soundworld that stretches from the 4/4 kick of ‘Dusco’ to the Brazillian percussion meets trap triplets of ‘Drizzle’. ‘Dank’ is made of exhausted and aggressively distorted hip hop, while ‘Drowning’ has an ambient feeling to it, leading into ‘Dilute’’s pockmarked abstraction. ‘Death’ is mercilessly overloaded and fever-sick, while ‘D'Mmmm‘ works with just a looped sample and plodding processed 808s. following on are ‘Demonoid‘ which stretches cymbals and drums into strange shimmering shapes and the brainwipe of ‘Damiana’s fierce oppressive squelch.

Thought you had Bloc Party pegged? Prepare to be surprised. Make that very surprised. The London four-piece have always had an undertow of dance music, something to do with their propulsive rhythm section perhaps, but their Instalment in the !K7 Tapes series, selected and mixed by Kele, is pretty much a full-on dancefloor set full of twists and turns. “We always respected dance music,” explains Kele. “It’s where lots of ideas for our songs started. Our first single, ‘She’s Hearing Voices’, was very much inspired by the image of people dancing. Rhythm and groove has always been important to the band and I wanted to reflect that. I guess it’s something that I’m taking further with this mix.” A lot further. The Tapes concept is a mix along the lines of an old school cassette tape, two sides with different moods on each. Kele’s starts in familiar territory and builds towards something altogether new. It’s a love letter to Bloc Party fans, a journey charting the band’s influences and favorite music. It moves from obscure post rock, through afro beat, building to unashamed dance-floor action in the form of house, garage and electro, then fades into an afterglow of ambient mood music. Exclusive to the mix is Kele’s remix of the Bloc Party track ‘Obscene’, from the band’s ‘The Next Wave Sessions’ EP. The dark and moody original is transformed into a UK bass banger. “I’ve been exploring the idea of remixing other people’s music recently and I’m really enjoying it,” he says. “You can be a lot less precious about things. I turned what is a rather sombre ballad into a jacked-up early ‘90s house track. Remixing is a good way of being creative without getting too attached to something.” The second half of the mix is dominated by house music, as Kele skillfully turns up the temperature. Kele is keen to stress that embracing dance music whole-heartedly is no fad. He’s thrown himself into DJing. “I think it’s an art form,” he says. “It’s been quite eye-opening, seeing how you can manipulate a crowd by tweaking a mixer. It’s exciting seeing how the similarities in seemingly disparate worlds come together.” He pauses, before adding: “I hope that this mix will illustrate where my fascination with dance music has come from. To me dance music is about transcendence. I think this mix will show it’s not just a passing thing. It’s something that’s always been there and it’s something that I couldn’t live without.”

Fink’s drummer Tim Thornton puts the feeling you get hearing opener ‘Berlin Sunrise’ better than anyone. ‘Nothing will ever beat the first time the RCO kickedin behind me, on that first rehearsal day. The best analogy I can come up with is this: imagine sitting in your car, pressing down the accelerator, and instead of the whirr and buzz of your ten-year-old Toyota Corolla, you get the sound and rumble of a Boeing 747 jet engine. That’s what it felt like for me.' And that’s what we hear as listeners to this remarkable album. Fink’s raw, emotive, percussive songs have had a vast, ocean-deep power added to them. The music swells, rises, drives us forward, Fink’s vocal swirling within it, guitar, bass and drums becoming elements of a giant, perfect mechanism. This is no naff fusion of disparate artforms, but rather an astonishingly effective, entirely new piece of art. Yo Smoothie…No, You’re Alright Though best known as the keyboardist for Wilco for the past ten years, Mikael Jorgensen is also an accomplished writer, producer and engineer who has been in and around recording studios his whole life. Born in suburban New Jersey to Scandinavian immigrant parents, Mikael Jorgensen developed a fascination with music and its production while accompanying his father Joe, an accomplished New York recording engineer, to recording studios in NYC at age 7. From this technology-rich childhood, Mikael went on to gain formal education ranging from ﬁne arts and video to electronics and computer science, a combination that now forms the core of his creative endeavors as a master of modern-digital and retro-analog production. Working at SOMA Studios in Chicago, owned by John McEntire of Tortoise, Mikael worked on records with artists like Stereolab, Rob Mazurek and The Aluminum Group. This period culminated with Mikael engineering Wilco's, A Ghost Is Born, during which he transcended his engineering role and began playing keyboards in the group, where he has stayed for over a decade. Throughout this time, Mikael has been collaborating with a number of other musicians and producers, including his long-term musical partner, Greg O'Keeffe. Their 2009 album All is Golden - released under the moniker Pronto - led to a unique second album, Mikael Jorgensen & Greg O'Keeffe (BSR-002). After listening to the basic live tracks, Jorgensen began to abandon the guitars, bass and vocals and replace them with vintage analog synthesizers, software synthesizers and music technology of any variety. At ﬁrst just a few replacements accentuated the production, but eventually Jorgensen and O'Keeffe would replace nearly everything but the live drums. This labor intensive shift has produced one of the most interesting electronic music records in recent memory, one that artfully avoids the “clubby” and “dancey” and "ambient" cliches to cast its own sonic territory that spans playfully sinister grooves, euphoric 8-bit blossoms and quiet introspection. Toward the end of production, Jorgensen noticed an article about producer/engineer Allen Farmelo's retro-futuristic mixing console, and the two were soon into a long-term mixing collaboration for the Mikael Jorgensen & Greg O'Keeffe album. Mixing cemented Mikael and Allen's relationship and eventually led to Butterscotch Records (founded by Farmelo) signing Jorgensen for Mikael Jorgensen & Greg O'Keeffe, as well as plotting the course for more albums from Jorgensen.

Angeline King and Derek See began The Bang Girl Group Revue (hereafter The Bang for short) in 2009, driven by their love of 1960's soul, girl group and beat music and style. The group became an immediate success on the live circuit with their reinvention of little known soul/ beat gems and a handful of original tunes, written in the style of the 1960's. While The Bang went through several early lineup changes (one of which was captured on the debut 45 RPM single "Another Notch On His belt" which quickly sold out), it gelled beautifully for the recording of their debut LP, "Soul Shangri-La". The album was recorded at a private all analog studio in the San Francisco bay area, and the group is proud of the fact that there is no digital processing of any sort used on the album. While The Bang would never deny that their music is based firmly in the 1960's, they have seen firsthand through live performance that it is a sound that spans generations and appeals to not only those who lived through the era and mod revivalists but also those in their teens and twenties who may be getting a first taste of the soul of this music. The Bang made a conscious decision to record our album using not only the technology of the era that their music is drawn from but also, more importantly, recorded it in a way that shows the strengths of the band. The ladies' vocals were all tracked together; the three of them gathered around two microphones (whoever was lead singer had her own mic while the backings where sang into the same mic). This is the way it was done, and it presents not only a complete performance but also the natural blend of the group. There are points where Angeline and Tisha Joy's harmonies are so close they sound as though they are one voice overdubbed! The music performed by the gentlemen was recorded by the band, together, in the same room. Nothing compares to the passion and heart that a group of musicians create when they are in the same room, making eye contact, watching physical communication. This is the root of the "magic" of the old recordings, and The Bang captures the heart and soul of the era with just enough of a contemporary edge.

The album opens with washes of sound and one forlorn voice penetrating the ether before launching into the brutal, ghostly dirge of “To Attempt Openness,” featuring frequent collaborators the Assembly of Light Choir. Unexpected bursts of noise, generated by guitars and electronics, puncture any sense of comfort or complacency and eerie samples float from the ether. King and Buford masterfully use the spectral space between the sounds to create almost unimaginable tension, employing silence as effectively as they do cacophony. This restraint, the knowledge of when to punish with volume and when to punish with the absence thereof, bestows the moments of fury with gravity. King’s screams are the centerpiece of the band’s aesthetic: panicstricken and distraught, constantly on the verge of breaking. His lyrics are no less unhinged. On the album’s colossal closer “Bearer of Bad Tidings,” he shrieks “Life worthless and devoid of any meaning… all the world a grave.” Buford’s drums act as both a stabilizer and instigator of the madness, at times pushing the proceedings further into oblivion and others providing a lifeline for the listener as the guitars and electronics deliberately push you toward the brink.

Imbogodom, the duo of Daniel Beban (Orchestra of Spheres, Slakes) and Alexander Tucker (Grumbling Fur), return with their third limited edition LP, Metafather, the ﬁnal installment in the BBC Bush House trilogy. Metafather was recorded in summer 2011 during the ﬁnal days of Bush House, as the building was undergoing the process of decommission. The duo pulled tape machines from the wreckage of abandoned studios and set to work to create a new set of radiophonic song-smithery and quarter-inch tape works. Situated in Aldwych, central London, Bush House was the BBC World Service hub for over 70 years. With its Orwellian architecture and labyrinthine corridors, this historic building served as the perfect location to tap into London’s hidden ley lines and unlock its sonic secrets. As the city erupted into riots and warehouses blazed outside, Imbogodom plugged into the heart of the disquiet to create a varied collection of brooding tape work anthems for a dystopian Albion. From 2006 to 2011, Imbogodom made use of Studio 6, located deep underground in the bowels of the building, to conduct their nighttime experiments. While London slept, Beban and Tucker put the neglected studio equipment to work, creating phantom-like transmissions and sound pieces out of tape machine loops, foley sound effects and vintage mixing desks. It began with two guys that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know each other in 2004. One came to Los Angeles because of his military service. The other came to pursue a dream, a career in the music industry. By chance their paths crossed, one needed a place to stay the other had an open room in his rather empty apartment. DJ Push Play was a young and naĂŻve cat, with a penchant for underground Hip-Hop. He DJayed at parties while attending Florida State University and started record collecting. Solrac was definitely the more experienced of the two. He held down a Hip-Hop radio show at Quinnipiac University. He also produced beats and MCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d. A few of his friends moved out to Los Angeles to experience a new way of life. Solrac led the wayâ&#x20AC;Ś An instant connection formed. Solrac and DJ Push Play joined forces with Nick Classic to form Cipharadio, a free underground Hip-Hop podcast. That opened up opportunities for them with artists they knew and respected. It also exposed them to new underground Hip-Hop artists. Although they lived separately after 2005, they knew they had something special to contribute to the Hip-Hop community. In 2010 they moved back in together and started work on this project. DJ Z joined the team at that time. Solrac Tracks, DJ Push Play and DJ Z reached out to the artists and provided them with beats. The artists featured on this album provided great lyrics and worked with us to share with you what we all knowâ&#x20AC;Ś. we need to bring the Golden Era back to Hip-Hop.

Portishead’s Adrian Utley brings together an orchestra of electric guitar players to interpret Terry Riley's 'In C'. Written in 1964,‘In C’ is one of the most influential pieces of music from the 20 th Century, it established minimalism as a music genre. In C's simple musical rules – 53 musical phrases in C and no duration - allow for infinite variations. Utley's impressive Guitar Orchestra is augmented by organs and a clarinet making for a mesmeric sound experience. The Guitar Orchestra consists of 24 musicians from Bristol: 19 guitarists including John Parish (PJ Harvey), Thought Forms, and Jim Barr (Portishead live band); 4 organs and a bass clarinet. The effect is an organic musical experience very much created in front of the audience both fragile and thunderingly uplifting. “I've been exploring the sonic possibilities of massed guitars for a while now in various contexts from pure noise to the sacred choral music of Arvo Part. So it was interesting to see what would happen if we had 20 electric guitars plus organs playing ‘In C’. It is an amazing piece of writing and original thought. The album was recorded live at St Georges Hall, Bristol, one of Britain’s leading concert halls which is known for its astounding acoustic and unique atmosphere. The core members of the orchestra will tour later in the year augmented by musicians from the countries they visit including England, France and Poland.

Issued in 1981 this was the band’s sixth album and crafted with two new members, drummer Bob Henrit and guitarist/vocalist John Verity, formerly of Argent and fresh from former great white hopes Phoenix. With band leader Terry Thomas on production and released on RCA records, the intent was to craft an album that would push Charlie into the musical super league.
