"Some may call this destiny and some may call this chance, but we're just calling it exciting news." – XLR8R "The pairing seems cosmically just" – Pitchfork
WARPCD207
“In the early seventies I found myself preferring film soundtracks to most other types of records. What drew me to them was their sensuality and unfinishedness - in the absence of the film they invited you, the listener, to complete them in your mind. If you hadn't even seen the film, the music remained evocative like the lingering perfume of somebody who's just left a room you've entered. I heard Nino Rota's Fellini soundtracks often before I saw the films and in listening to them I found I could imagine a whole movie in advance: and though it usually turned out to be nothing much like Fellini's version, it left me with the idea that a music which left itself in some way unresolved engaged the listener in a particularly creative way. The work in this collection is a result of an occasional collaboration between myself, Leo Abrahams and Jon Hopkins. The two of them are gifted young player/composers whose work, like mine, is intimately connected to the possibilities and freedoms of electronic music. Over the last few years we've worked together several times, enjoying exploring the huge new sonic territories now available to musicians. Mostly the pieces on this album resulted not from 'composition' in the classical sense, but from improvisation. The improvisations are not attempts to end up with a song, but rather with a landscape, a feeling of a place and perhaps the suggestion of an event. In a sense they deliberately lack 'personality': there is no singer, no narrator, no guide as to what you ought to be feeling. If these pieces had been used in films, the film would complete the picture. As they stand, they are the mirror-image of silent movies - sound-only movies.
Format: CD Boxlot: 30 Price: 14.99 Packaging: CD album in 8-panel digipak
I am especially pleased to be releasing this new material on Warp, for a long time one of the truly innovative labels. I am pleased to be in the company of many artists whose work I've followed and admired over the years. I look forward to a rewarding relationship.” Brian Eno (September, 2010)

Grammy-winners Huey Lewis and The News announce the November 2 release of Soulsville, their first album in nine years, to be released on W.O.W. Records. Recorded at historic Ardent Studios in Memphis, the album features 14 classic songs from the vault of Stax Records, including “Respect Yourself” and “Got To Get You Off My Mind.” Considered to be the preeminent soul music label in America, Stax produced an astounding number of hit records throughout the 1960’s & 70’s. Ably paying tribute to the rich Stax legacy, Huey Lewis & The News, joined by their long time horn section, capture the energy and excitement of this important era.
Soulsville re-unites Huey Lewis & The News with co-producer Jim Gaines (“Sports”,”Fore!”) who worked at the Stax studios (home to artists like Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker T & The MG’s, and Isaac Hayes) as a young man and was involved in many of the label’s original recordings

Elliott Smith was born Steven Paul Smith in Omaha, Nebraska on August 6, 1969. His father Gary Smith was in medical school at the University of Nebraska, and his mother Bunny was an elementary school teacher. When Elliott was one year old his parents divorced, and he moved with his mother to Dallas, Texas. That same year, his father was drafted, assigned to the U.S. Air Force, and sent to the Philippines as a physician. By the time Elliott was 5, both his father and mother had remarried and his father and stepmother moved to Portland, Oregon. From the age of four to thirteen, Elliott lived with his mother, stepfather and two half- siblings in Duncanville, TX (a suburb of Dallas). At fourteen, Elliott moved to Portland, Oregon to live with his father, stepmother, and two half-sisters. Elliott started to write and record songs at home in Portland on a four-track recorder. He attended Lincoln High School and graduated in 1987 as a National Merit finalist. While in high school he formed his first band, Stranger than Fiction. Elliott attended Hampshire College in Massachusetts and graduated in 1991 with a major in political philosophy. He then moved back to Portland and formed the band Heatmiser along with Neil Gust, his friend and fellow-musician from Hampshire College. Elliott released his first solo album, Roman Candle (Cavity Search), in 1994. He followed with the self-titled Elliott Smith (1995) and Either/ Or (1997), both issued on the independent label Kill Rock Stars. He also recorded three albums with Heatmiser in the early ʻ90s: Dead Air and Cop and Speeder (both onFrontier) and Mic City Sons (Virgin/Caroline). In 1997 director and Portland resident Gus Van Sant used some of his songs in the film Good Will Hunting (Van Sant had been a friend and fan of Smithʼs since hearing Roman Candle). One of those, “Miss Misery,” went on to earn an Academy Award nomination for Best Song in a Motion Picture. Elliott performed “Miss Misery” on the Academy Awards telecast March 23, 1998. Elliott signed a contract with DreamWorks Records in 1998 and quickly released XO, his fourth solo album. That same year his cover of The Beatles “Because” was the end-credit song for the Academy Award winning film American Beauty. In 2000, Smith released his fifth solo album, Figure 8, to much critical acclaim. After the release of Figure 8 and subsequent touring in support of the record, Smith concentrated on writing and reworking more songs, many of which made up From a Basement on The Hill, which was released posthumously on Anti Records in October of 2004. Before his death on October 21, 2003, Elliott had realized his long time dream of building his own recording studio, New Monkey, located in Van Nuys, California. Kill Rock Stars released New Moon, in May 2007. New Moon is a double-CD collection of 24 songs recorded from 1994-97, during the period of the release of the self-titled album and Either/Or. KRS also reissued both Roman Candle and From a Basement on the Hill in April 2010, placing all of Elliott's independent catalog onto one label.

“Smith's music would become fuller, and his harmonic language more confident, on subsequent albums. The sound is there, though, unmistakable from the first note: the defeated whisper of the vocals, the deceptively intricate guitar work, and the angry little mantras.” – Pitchfork (March 2010)

Famed drummer and Grateful Dead co-founder Bill Kreutzmann and voodoo guitar master Papa Mali come together as 7 Walkers for their self-titled debut release, due out November 2, 2010 on Response Records. Together with legendary New Orleans bass man George Porter Jr. (The Meters, Funky Meters) and multi-instrumentalist Matt Hubbard (Willie Nelson, Fastball), the highly anticipated release features a batch of brand-new Robert Hunter (Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan lyricist) originals co-written with the band, a guest performance by Willie Nelson on “King Cotton Blues,” and a few smokin’ instrumentals. A self-proclaimed “open love letter” to the city of New Orleans, the end result is a fiery and funky collection of tunes that quite brilliantly capture a unique collaboration between two very different musical shamans.

The Autumn Defense Once Around
NATIONAL release date: CD/lp: 11.02.2010 By day John Stirratt and Patrick Sansone sell thousands of albums and tour the world as members of indie juggernaut Wilco, while lending their writing, playing and producing abilities to dozens of high-profile recordings. But by night these renowned pros are able to sit down, relax and create something special that comes straight from the heart of why they pursued music as a career - and that’s the Autumn Defense. After releasing 2007’s The Autumn Defense on their own Broadmoor label, Stirratt and Sansone have teamed up with North Carolina’s Yep Roc Records to release their latest full-length effort, Once Around. For the past nine years, this pair of Southerners-turned-Chicagoans has quietly been nurturing the reverent, classic pop of the Autumn Defense. Though the outset of the band saw Stirratt handling the bulk of the songwriting while Sansone lent his talents to production, the duo has steadily evolved into a partnership in both respects. From 2000’s debut effort The Green Hour to the critically lauded, salt-of-the-earth folk rock of 2003’s Circles, the Autumn Defense developed its late afternoon kickback sound like a fine wine develops and deepens – with time. Once Around is a formidable tapestry of thoughtful, intricate sunshine wrapped around a core of timeless, experienced songwriting. It’s the kind of record that needed to be made, for the audience but also for the artists. But that part didn’t come easily. “I think the possibility of an Autumn Defense album after the self-titled LP was a little bit in question,” Sansone says. “It wasn't explicit...but I think we needed a little bit of time to reconnect with why we do this, and realize how much we enjoy it.” The majority of that reconnecting occurred while Stirratt and Sansone were in New Zealand last year to record the Seven Worlds Collide charity LP with singer/songwriter Neil Finn and a host of other talented musicians. “ The experience in New Zealand was instrumental in this,” Sansone recalls. “We were spontaneously writing new songs, having other musicians that we really respect recording with us and reacting so positively to the Autumn Defense material.” The result is a distinctly Autumn Defense record, full of lush melodic textures, invitingly delicate pop arrangements and frequents nods to the AM gold, soul and radio rock that dominated the group’s formative years. But the band has also had its ear to the groundswell of modern independent music. “Seeing a lot of the newer, vocal based groups like Grizzly Bear and Fleet Foxes makes me appreciate the vocal sound that we’ve always had, ”Stirratt notes.“ It's prompted me to highlight the harmony aspect of our group even more than before.” It’s this reverence for both the past and future that allows the Autumn Defense to continue leading the resurgence of the harmonyheavy Laurel Canyon inspired folk-pop movement, much as they have for nearly a decade. Trends in pop music come and go like the fashions that accompany them, and rare is the outfit that knows itself well enough to hang its hat on the belief that melody, harmony and a healthy record collection are the foundational elements of great music. The Autumn Defense embodies a sound that doesn’t worry about fitting into the current independent canon, chiefly because it’s a sound that never goes out of style.

“It’s changed my whole world,” says singer-songwriter-producer Bleu. The gifted pop-rocker’s effusive words don’t refer to the creation of his dynamic, highly personal new album, Four. Nor do they reflect his work as co-writer with chart-topping acts like the Jonas Brothers and Selena Gomez. Rather, they convey his response to the astonishing generosity of his fans, who helped him raise some $27,000 in a single week following the launch of his campaign on DIY fundraising site Kickstarter. As a result of fans’ contributions, he’s been able to launch his own label and put Four out himself in North America (U.K. indie Lojinx acquired the rights to release the record across the pond). The release follows on the heels of 2009’s critically admired A Watched Pot and comes amid a flurry of co-writing and production projects. Four is packed with pop pleasures, such as the rollicking opener “Singin’ in Tongues”; the stirring hometown anthem “B.O.S.T.O.N.”; the ecstatic “Dead in the Mornin’”; and more besides. But the lyrics of these effortlessly catchy tunes often find him venturing into more spiritual, and sometimes much darker, territory than ever before. Meanwhile, the songs he’s penned with and for the Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomez, Hanson, Jon McLaughlin, Kate Voegele, Boys Like Girls and other pop-radio mainstays whose gold and platinum successes allow Bleu to focus on following his muse on his own material. In addition to his solo work, production projects (TV/TV, Air Traffic Controller, Chris Mann) and commercial tunesmithery, Bleu has organized and/or lent his voice and playing to inventive side projects like the rock band The Major Labels; the one-off ELO homage L.E.O.; LoudLion with Taylor Locke of Rooney and numerous others. He’s also toured widely, sharing stages of late with Rooney, The Posies, Katie Herzig, Graham Colton, Creed Bratton of The Office, John Doe, Mike Viola, Derek Webb and Drake Bell, joining Tracy Bonham for a string of dates in 2010, and performing intimate shows on his own. Such appearances are a chance for Bleu not only to display his uncanny way with a melody but also to express his gratitude to the fans who’ve made this new phase of his solo career possible.

After parting ways with two founding members and shelving the Fleetwood Mac-esque romantic drama, Chicago pop band The 1900s spent the years since their 2007 debut, Cold & Kind, updating their lineup and trademark sound. Now a sleek 6-piece, singer/guitarist Edward Anderson, vocalist Caroline Donovan, singer Jeanine O'Toole, bassist Charlie Ransford, and violinist Andra Kulans are all about the journey.
The band's last record, Cold & Kind, was about the rapture, or more specifically those who were "left behind". Return of the Century tells the story about an underground world where people's minds are held in thrall in the name of spiritual advancement. For the recording of their 2nd album, Return of the Century, The 1900s step away from the grandiose orchestration and retro obsessions of their previous work & expand on the pop elements - vocal arrangements, catchy guitars, and bouncy rhythms while blending artfully finessed home recordings with the pristine quality of high-end recording studios. In addition to releasing an album and two EPs with Parasol Records, The 1900s have performed at Lollapalooza, and toured across America, supporting The Vaselines, Iron & Wine, Midlake, The New Pornographers, Black Mountain, Ted Leo, Belle & Sebastian's Stevie Jackson and British Sea Power. 1. OLD LIGHT THE DIRTY FUTURE
Despite what the laundry detergent ads have been telling us, the future’s going to be dirty. No matter how much time we spend in front of the little clean, white geometric figures of the wuh wuh wuh, that white glow won’t rub off. All stills rises from and resolves into dirt. Or at least petroleum. But Old Light’s people don’t share the dirt disdain. They’ve got grass stains on knees and asses, splinters in the fingers, and soil under their nails.

Shining on all the dirt, however, is light: sun, stars, streetlights, fireflies, etc. (been outside recently?) A light like gold. Old Light began when Garth (singer and autoharp) bought an old autoharp from an antique instrument guru down in Winters, CA and recorded it over and over, layering the tracks. The echoing layers of harp were a very specific kind of non-specific sound. It’s blurry, yet there are bell-like overtones that just shine like gold. The antique glow of pewter, worn wooden tools, a sunset obscured by smog, waste product of California dreaming. Like Brian Wilson camping in a cardboard box.

Horse Feathers has been on the road for the majority of 2010 following the April release of their third full-length, "Thistled Spring". They closed their record release show in their hometown of Portland, OR with a cover of Nirvana's "Drain You" so powerful that the whole town was still talking about it days later! KRS made them jump into the studio between tours to commit this phenomenon to vinyl, and the result is this 7": Drain You on the A side and a new original, "Bonnet of Briars", on the B side. They continue their world tour this September with a month in Europe, followed by a full US tour in November with Anais Mitchell and in December with Y La Bamba.

"Erase Errata might not be as playful as they once were, but they're much better.” – Pitchfork (August, 2006) “…is the sole audible note that takes on the fiery political climate and the banal musical climate that truly follows in the footsteps of the revolution started by DNA, Mars, James Chance, and others. They are the first true second generation No Wave band.” – Coke Machine Glow (July, 2006) “The band has a noticeably meaner, more muscular sound than on previous records. Hoyston plays lower on the neck, drummer Bianca Sparta gallops, even Erickson is more prone to an honest-to-gosh riff than before. The band has done the classic addition by subtraction. The result is that for all of Hoyston's irony, the band lunges with a newfound fervor and violence -- they're acting out the fantasy of torching the place while she yesses them to death.” – Insound (2006)

DARKSTAR - North
FORMAT - CD /LP LABEL - Hyperdub UPC - CD: 5055300319715 / LP: 5055300319708 CATALOG # - HDBCD006 / HDBLP006 LIST PRICE - CD $15.99 /LP $19.99 Darkstar in 2010 are an upgraded model of the Darkstar which released the much loved single ‘Aidy’s Girl Is A Computer’ at the end of 2009. That song, and previous singles ‘Need You’ and ‘Squeeze My Lime’ hinted at a nascent songwriting talent and mastery of oozing synth drones that has burst into life on their debut album, ‘North’. The band have adjusted their focus, adding lead singer James Buttery to the production and writing team of James Young and Aiden Whalley, and the result as heard on ‘North’ is a brave, low-key pop masterpiece, which discards the cheap thrills and treadmill ideas that many deploy to access success. Instead, 'North' will creep up on you with each listen, seducing with its’ achingly gorgeous, synthesized songwriting. From the intro track ‘In The Wings’, right through to the closing song, a lush new version of 'Squeeze My Lime' now called 'When It's Gone', the album blends their crunchy, citric synths, baroque strings, piano and tender guitar with vocal harmonies, gently laced with glitches and noise. Here, Darkstar have subtly found the beauty in distortion.

Members of The Roots Radics frequently join Dub Syndicate, as do other On-U Sound players and singers, including Lee Perry, who has recorded two albums with the band.
KING MIDAS SOUND —Lost / Frequencies (ft Pupajim)
FORMAT - 7” LABEL - Hyperdub UPC - 5055300318053 CATALOG # - HDB039 LIST PRICE - $10.99 King Midas Sound has been leaving a trail of the dead with their searing live show since their album ‘Waiting For You’ was released in November last year. Their performance at Sonar in June was emphatically one of the highlights of the festival, by turns soothing and pressing an audience that grew and grew until there was no room left in the packed underground hall. ‘Lost’ is one of the album’s most single-suited moments, released here on Hyperdub’s first ever seven inch record. Roger Robinson’s lyrics are full of regret and sorrow in the aftermath of a finished relationship, while the beats sound like a long lost RZA produc-tion. The accompanying video shows him wandering around in a fever dream, bag on back, as he tries to work out what’s just happened. On the B side, new track ‘Frequencies’ finds guest vocalist Pupajim versioning on the rhythm from KMS’s ‘Cool Out’, the French reggae emcee dropping lyrics like a singjay lullaby on his ode to bass frequencies. Limited edition in deluxe full-colour high-grade reverse-board jacket.
HARRY BECKETT —The Modern Sound Of Harry Beckett
FORMAT - CD LABEL - On-U Sound UPC - 8015948301418 CATALOG # - ONUCD1002 LIST PRICE - CD: $15.99 Plans were already in place to announce the re-release of this 2008 album when the sad news broke of Harry Beckett‟s death a few weeks ago. The Barbados-born trumpeter Harry Beckett was one of the great treasures of British culture. Charlie Mingus was a fan, and his old LPs such as 'Flare Up' have become sought-after rarities. Even in his early 70s he was still on great form, creating a magnificent sonic treat in the shape of „The Modern Sound Of Harry Beckett‟, on which he teamed up with a variety of dub-reggae and electro -jazz collaborators, confidently stirred into a steaming sonic bouillabaisse by On-U Sound producer Adrian Sherwood. Beckett and Sherwood worked together many times over the years, but this album is the sole full length from the unusual pairing, created by the simple but effective method of Beckett improvising over new and revised On-U rhythm tracks.

In other words, they’ve been cool since long before garage-rock became cool again (even though it was never NOT cool, ya know?). And they’ve done it by following the most impor-tant rule of garage: Keep It simple, stupid. With only a drumkit, guitar, and Farfisa organ (played by Mike Latulippe, Tim Purrier, and John Szymanski, respectively), the Hentchmen prove that straight for-ward, fun rock’n’roll will never go out of style. .

For the uninitiated, Githead are Colin Newman (Wire), Malka Spigel and Max Franken (Minimal Compact) and Robin Rim-baud (aka Scanner). However, who they are is far less important than what they are. GENRE : ROCK/DARK AMBIENT/DRONE FILE UNDER: “B” Barn Owl Evan Caminiti (guitars, vocals) and Jon Porras (guitars, vocals, drums, harmonium) met in San Francisco in 2006 and immediately started playing music together. Over the next four years, the two gradually sculpted a vast collection of hazy desert sky meditations – ominous, barren expanses of music for desert walks at dusk, and dark, pastoral passages embellished with psychedelic and atmospheric wash. A mixture between devotional ragas and dusty stomp with atmosphere and production that references shoegaze and black metal influences. Ancestral Star, their third LP, marks the evolution of the Barn Owl sound into a territory where it has become wholly its own, transcending the sum of its influences and taking on a life of its own. At the same time, it is a more realized extension of that sound. Caminiti and Porras paid close attention to the composition of each track and its flow within the album as a whole. Engaging throughout, every moment contributes to an overall feeling of mysterious desert expanse and a sonic narrative that unfurls like a cinematic metaphysical western. Recorded by The Norman Conquest in the fall of 2009, this was the first time that Barn Owl were able to take their time in a professional studio, fine tuning and honing the pieces over the span of a couple months. The majority of the tracks were recorded live to tape and were a mix of composed and improvised elements. The near limitless options, as far as equipment and microphones were concerned, allowed the band to shape and refine the definition of the Barn Owl sound. The extra time in the studio also allowed for other textural embellishments. Marielle Jakobsons (of Darwinsbitch, Date Palms, Myrmyr) contributed violin to “Flatlands” and “Awakening” which gave the two pieces a heavier Americana vibe and really enriched the sonic palette. The Norman Conquest lent vocals to several tracks and also played modular synth through a Marshall half-stack that added a nice low end to the title track. On “Incantation”, an ensemble that Caminiti and Porras are members of called Portraits, played gong, bells, singing bowls, and other percussive metals which really lends to the ritualistic feeling of the piece. At the very least, there are 10 people playing on the track. Ancestral Star also acts as the first album in which bowed guitar is heavily explored. In addition to having put out several releases on labels such as Root Strata, Digitalis, Not Not Fun, and Blackest Rainbow, the band also has a collaboration album called Barn Owl and the Infinite Strings Ensemble coming out on Important Records. Caminiti continues to work in visual art (illustration and printmaking mostly) and release records under his own name as well as with Lisa McGee in Higuma. Porras is a photographer and also releases solo material and has another project called Elm. The band will be touring in support of the record this fall on the East Coast and early next year in Europe.

Koen Holtkamp Gravity/Bees Thrill - 254 LP $15.99 BOX LOT LP 40 Vinyl is non-returnable
*90377-ACFEBf
GENRE : ELECTRONIC/AMBIENT FILE UNDER: “H” Holtkamp, Koen “M” Mountains
Release Date: November 2, 2010 The detailed and resonant music of Koen Holtkamp is disarmingly beautiful. Gravity/Bees is technically a very complex recording, but so directly emotional as to betray it’s origins, much like Holtkamp’s work in Mountains. Originally spurred by an invitation to take part in the Dissolving Localities Project in Jerusalem in May 2010, Holtkamp’s decision to craft a recording from bees stemmed from a desire to create something he was attracted to from a production standpoint, something extremely detailed and resonant. On one level representing a continuous flow of sound like a drone but also having a familiar association making it human. In the beginning of the piece the instruments are sculpted around the bee recordings, as the piece develops the actual bees gradually become background and the instruments take focus loosely emulating the buzzing resonant characteristics of the hive. “Loosely Based On Bees” is mainly a studio creation with only a few live additions from a 2008 New Years performance added on toward the end. “In The Absence Of Gravity…” is a side-long piece based around a 2008 solo performance in Brighton. The technical set up was somewhat inspired by Terry Riley’s ‘time-lag accumulator’ pieces using a delay system where Holtkamp was constantly recording over himself in order to create a continuous and fluid overall sound. Holtkamp took a non-purist approach and combined the live recording with some of his more recent studio experimentations from the summer of 2010. The work is built mainly around processed acoustic guitar, analog synthesizers, and electronics but also incorporates recordings of harmonica, electric organ, small percussion objects, and an unlikely glass of ginger ale. Holtkamp began working with sound in 1997, and co-founded the Apestaartje collective/label in 1998. Holtkamp has released two solo albums under the name Aero (Apestaartje) and four albums with Mountains (Apestaartje, Catsup Plate, Thrill Jockey), as well as an album under his own name (Type). Gravity/Bees marks his first solo release on Thrill Jockey. Holtkamp has toured throughout the US and Europe performing everywhere from festivals, art galleries and museums, to basements, communes, churches, and rock clubs. He has performed with Fennesz, Radian, James Blackshaw, Nicholas Collins, Carsten Nicolai, Tony Conrad, Supersilent, and many more. He has also been included in several exhibitions and art projects, most notably at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the above mentioned performance series in Jerusalem. Holtkamp is staying busy by recording sound for a documentary in Japan and working on a companion piece that will be released on Barge Recordings in 2011. He will also be playing a few solo shows both at home and abroad, as well as doing a handful of Mountains US and European shows. Gravity/Bees was mastered and cut at D&M in Berlin and is presented in an initial pressing of 1,000 copies with a custom letter-pressed jacket.

The last Mountains album Choral (Thrill 211, 2009) was a huge success and is currently in it’s 3rd vinyl pressing “Field Rituals mixes soil and plasma, the rattle and creaks of handiwork with astral filaments and geodesic drones. Holtkamp’s guitars have a percussive ring – chattering, chiming, switching between metal, glass and wood – or they’re dissolved into analgesic billows of carbonated ointment. Holtkamp’s just comfortable being comforting, so bask in the balmy glow.” - Dusted Magazine on Field Rituals “Holtkamp and Anderegg deliver a kind of 21st century folk music - one that’s immersed in the aesthetics of modern technology yet retains a very natural, very approachable sound. Absolutely gorgeous music and a massive recommendation.” - Boomkat on Mountains

Dutch/American singer and composer Peter Quinnell started The Flower Machine in Los Angeles in 2004, after which numerous low-profile indie releases followed in the US, Australia, Holland, England and Thailand. With a particularly idiosyncratic approach that blends psychedelic pop with early 1970s rock, the band is closer in spirit to the work of Syd Barrett and Dutch freak-beat pioneers The Outsiders and the Golden Earrings (original name of Golden Earring) than anything made past 1978 or so. Airplay on WFMU in New Jersey and KXLU Los Angeles helped spread the word, as well as many memorable gigs at The Knitting Factory in Hollywood before it was shut down (certainly unrelated). Liberal use of mellotron, backwards cymbals and sound effects are a notable feature of Flower Machine recordings, which as of late are increasingly made with Todd Tobias, producer for Robert Pollard. Conceived as a sort of psychedelic manifesto for the lost generation, Lavender Lane was primarily recorded in a cottage in a quiet tree-lined road just outside Los Angeles, which served as both recording studio and living space for singer Peter Quinnell during the period of time that most of the songs were written and recorded. This collection of songs captures the band at their most commercial, though still involves hundreds of overdubs, 1960s production techniques, random blocks of descending sixth chords, and lyrics that hover half-way between utopian existentialism and imagistic delirium. Five of the songs were recorded at Waterloo Sound in Kent, Ohio with Pollard/GbV producer Todd Tobias, whose recording approach meshed perfectly with the Flower Machine sound. They are a more lysergic, psychedelic Clientele meets Belle and Sebastian, or Roxy Music meets Low-era Bowie with flourishes of XTC and Rain Parade with a similarity with Rainbow Quartz’s own Lilys and Telepathic Butterflies.

The High Dials are a psychedelic pop band from Montreal. With swirling guitars, 3-part harmonies and catchy choruses, they make anthemic power pop shaded with shoegaze and folk elements. Their recordings have been hailed by NME, Spin and the New York Post who called them a “must-see band”. They have toured extensively, including stints with Brian Jonestown Massacre, Neko Case and a recent support slot for Echo & the Bunnymen. Anthems for Doomed Youth is their fourth fulllength album and sees them return to Rainbow Quartz Records, where they debuted in 2003. To make their new record, the High Dials built a home studio in an abandoned building that once belonged to the Canadian navy. Attracted by the beautiful natural reverb in the large admiral’s ballroom, they were bravely undeterred by claims it was haunted. The enormous space was still littered with naval artifacts, including old maps and a giant ship engine. After several truly spooky supernatural experiences, they wrapped up production and brought the recordings to Michael Musmanno (Lilys) for mixing in New York City. The resulting album is the band’s most authentic and mature work to date. It comes closest to capturing the band as they sound live. It’s also a snapshot of the band’s creative evolution, with upbeat returns to their 60s roots as well as the moodier territory of later releases. It’s all packed into one punchy 40-minute, vinyl-length experience!

The June hail from Parma, Italy. Chris (guitar, vocals), White (bass, vocals) and G (drums) had common musical interests in psychedelia, pop and garage-rock from the sixties, punk, beat and mod cultures. This energetic Italian trio carved an original repertoire influenced by the Beatles, Byrds, Jam, Oasis, and Kula Shaker. Their first single was a Pete Ham cover, “Makes Me Feel Good”. This is their second album on Rainbow Quartz. Their sound conjures the energy of labelmates Rock Four, The High Dials and Sidonie, along with Oasis, The Three O’Clock and R.E.M. Think the ’80s Paisley Underground meets ’60s garage-y freakbeat psychedelia brought into the 21st century. They have played the 2009 and 2010 IPO Festivals in Liverpool.

Expo 70
Where Does Your Mind Go? Since 2003 Justin Wright’s Expo 70 project has been pushing drone and Kosmiche Musik to new realms, creating a layered world of sound that brings the listener to alien lands and foreign terrain while maintaining a dreamlike quality with shifting melodies and moods. Constant touring and a string of critically acclaimed albums released on labels such as Kill Shaman, Beta-lactam Ring, and Peasant Magik have clearly brought Expo 70’s name to the forefront of modern drone and Kosmiche Musik. Where Does Your Mind Go? is the brand new studio album from Expo 70 recorded during one prolific evening in 2009 while on an East Coast tour. The recording was tackled by Jason Meagher (No Neck Blues Band, D. Charles Speer & the Helix) at his Black Dirt Studios in upstate New York. On the recording Expo 70 founder Justin Wright is joined by part-time player Matt Hill (Umberto) and the two truly capture time and stand it still. Where Does Your Mind Go? is a 74 minute journey released on deluxe double LP and comprised of four long-form tracks that each take up a side of the two LPs.

The drum rhythm of the album’s opening track “Close Your Eyes and Effortlessly Drift Away” will surely put the listener in a relaxed trance. Delicately strummed notes from guitar and synth slowly surface and come to the forefront, building as the guitar melodies shift and flow alongside majestic ambiance that is eventually joined by a moody bass line. Side B’s “Night Dusting the Atmosphere” is a more electronically driven piece that conjures the best of mid-70’s Klaus Schulze with darker moods that sound more like a 70’s horror film than a loose drift into space. The second record shifts as “Transgressing Outward Which Is Inward” opens with a pounding synth loop and is accompanied three minutes later by piano. Clocking in at nineteen minutes this track’s brooding synth melodies and fluttering piano notes build into a John Cage-like choral resonance. It’s not hard to lose time while listening, as the moods of each instrument delicately transform and intertwine. The last song recorded during this eventful night is the album closer “Ancient Hawk Soul Takes Flight”, a heavy and morbid psychedelic affair. Dubbed out sitar lines and organ melodies build off delayed echoing reverb and morph into trance drum loops while spaced-out synth parts are accompanied by a dubbedout bass. Where Does Your Mind Go? is the sound of Expo 70 breaking into new terrain and is an epic statement from an artist already so highly regarded. The album will also be one of the most widely distributed and available of the Expo 70 catalog and is also rare in that it was recorded in a proper studio (almost all Expo 70 recordings to this point have been recorded in Wright’s home studio.) The remaining songs captured during these recording sessions will later be released on Immune as a companion album entitled Journey Through Astral Projection. Expo 70 will tour the US for two months this Fall in support of the album release. “If there was ever an ultimate soundtrack for blowing the hatch and floating free, doomed to a languorous eternity of drug fueled drift and buzzing rumbling psychedelic space rock torpor, this is most certainly it.” - Aquarius Records “Justin Wright however, has a knack for perfectly expressing the eerie calm just after destruction. His ambience hangs in the air like the crushing weight of extinguished souls, and when the guitars do come in they hang on the air with just the right amount of detached iciness. These are the tones that soundtrack the desperate calm and infinite endlessness of space” - Raven Sings the Blues “the smoky thickness of the guitar/Moog/organ/drumbox recall the phosphorescent ghost mystery Laurence Cook used to embody when he’d drape a sheet over his head and drum kit, then flail sideways into the the gaping yawp of the 0-mind. The music here is like a private lightshow in your bedroom.” - Byron Coley, WIRE

l Ninja Tune's 20TH ANNIVERSARY is drawing ever closer and we're celebrating in style! OCTOBER 2010 will not only play host to three massive U.S NINJA TUNE PARTIES in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. But it will also see the general release of TWO FANTASTIC DOUBLE CD COMPILATIONS featuring brand new music from all your favourite Ninja artists. Coupled with this we have the limited release of the Ninja Tune XX BOX SET which includes the NINJA TUNE BOOK aptly named '20 Years Of Beats & Pieces', 106 tracks, and much more - go to WWW.NINJATUNEXX.COM for more details.
The debut album from ANDREYA TRIANA 'LOST WHERE I BELONG' showcases Andreya's beautifully soulful voice and fantastic songwriting. All this effortlessly combined with the supurb production of fellow Ninja and master beatmaker SIMON GREEN AKA BONOBO, makes an album of soul music both timelessly classic and utterly contemporary. ROOTS MANUVA MEETS WRONGTOM At last a a new Roots Manuva album is here! 'DUPPY WRITER' comes in the form of a series of re-works of classic Roots Manuva tracks by the talented producer Wrongtom. The project is approached with such conviction and skill that many of the tunes become hard to place in their orignal context, so it really does feel as if these funky, skanking, shuffling little numbers are in fact the ground zero of the Manuva experience, and with artwork from the legendary Tony McDermott it's a thing of beauty. In 2004, Leroy Bach (then of the band Wilco) was introduced to Sonny Smith's first album and quickly joined Sonny's band. After a series of underground releases, Sonny was commissioned by Watchword Literary magazine to create his album One Act Plays, which features Neko Case, Edith Frost, Jolie Holland and more. Smith toured the country with Neko Case in the summer of 2006, with Case and Kelly Hogan singing backup in Smith's band. As the SF Weekly puts it, "There's a moment in every Sonny Smith performance when a strange hush falls over the crowd - when everyone's faces are lax from laughing. He swings at them with a depth of meaning ... that hits so hard it can only be a truth."

Huey Lewis & the News Soulsville
