The Happiness Waltz NATIONAL release date CD/LP: 03.19.2013

Sonically, The Happiness Waltz takes a trip back into Rouse’s early2000’s period, a time when so many of his longtime fans really came on board. A number of the new tracks could easily find a home on the AM radio of the late 1970’s, nestled between some of the biggest songs of the day. Lyrically, The Happiness Waltz is very much an album in the present, featuring some of Rouse’s most personal songs to date. Rouse reunites with producer Brad Jones, who produced and engineered two of his most beloved albums, 1972 (2003) and Nashville (2005). The Happiness Waltz was recorded in Valencia, Spain at Josh’s studio Rio Bravo; with overdubs and mixing completed at Alex The Great in Nashville, TN. After nine acclaimed studio albums, residing all over the U.S. and touring the world, Rouse found his muse for The Happiness Waltz in what is most near and dear to him, his new family. In 2005, the Nebraska native moved to Spain, where he now spends the majority of his time with his wife and two young children. The thoughts and perspective gained from his experience as a husband and father pervades the 12 songs that make up The Happiness Waltz. The Happiness Waltz is filled with Rouse’s thoughtful, delicate and infectious pop craft, a sound that has become his signature. The subtle grooves of “It’s Good To Have You” and “Julie (Come Out Of The Rain)” blend seamlessly with the poignant “The Ocean” and “Our Love” and the jovial “A Lot Like Magic” and “City People and City Things”. The common thread running throughout The Happiness Waltz is derived from a newfound wisdom that can only be the result of life-changing transitions. Selling Points: + Fourth album on Kill Rock Stars + Extensive US and European tours in 2013 + Featured in New Yorker, Elle Magazine BIO: There’s little doubt that Marnie Stern lives up to her reputation as “the lady who shreds,” but for Marnie, shredding is not enough. After putting out three critically-acclaimed albums, Marnie could have gotten away with putting out another album filled with her richly layered sound, singular frenetic finger tapping and almost philosophical lyrics. However, as anyone who has given her last few albums a good listen can tell, Marnie is not one to stand still. Instead she attacks her musical evolution with full frontal bravado, reveling in musical risk instead of relaxing in the comforts of the known. Her new album, The Chronicles of Marnia, finds Marnie not only working with a new drummer (Oneida’s Kid Millions), but also passionately subtracting from her normally dense song structures to craft a sound that is both familiar and wholly original. “I always gravitate towards interweaving and a more abrasive sound,” Marnie said about working on the new album. “I was working with Nicholas Vernhes from Rare Book Room Recording in Brooklyn, and he was the producer. He wanted my voice clearer and fewer guitar parts. I tried it because I wanted to try something different.” The musical transformation evident on her new album isn’t entirely unexpected, as fans who have listened to both “For Ash” and “Every Single Line Means Something” in a single sitting know. That same slow progression can be seen between 2010’s self-titled album and the forthcoming The Chronicles of Marnia. Marnie can’t help but laugh when thinking back on her musical evolution. “I'm sure if I went from the first album to this one, I'd have a heart attack. Luckily it's been gradual enough for me to enjoy the changes.” And there’s little doubt that her fans will too. Even as Marnie evolves from what Pitchfork called her “art-metal math-rock bubblegum pop” genre, fans will still find themselves jumping head first into the album and quickly bonding with the emotionally resonant material, cascading hooks and transcendental guitar riffs. Plus, the album shreds. She is Marnie Stern after all. www.killrockstars.com

Sometimes what you don’t do is as important as what you do. Brandt Brauer Frick have made name for themselves producing techno without the technology, using classical instruments in preference to synthesizers and computers. It’s a negative that’s had positive results. On the Berlin trios third album ‘Miami’, it’s again what Brandt Brauer Frick are not doing that is once again important: they aren’t slavishly following the formula of its two predecessors. “‘Mr Machine’ (2011's sophomore album) the record made with the (ten piece classical) ensemble, especially was very planned and strict,” says Paul Frick. “We wanted to be more spontaneous this time. We wanted to do something very different, more dark and more rough. We wanted to write songs rather than tracks that slowly evolve.” Another major difference is the appearance of a number of guest vocalists who had a big influence on the direction the album took. There are appearances from Jamie Lidell, Om’mas Keith (Grammy nominated producer of Frank Ocean’s ‘Channel Orange’, Kanye West, Jay Z), Gudrun Gut (Einsturzende Neubauten and German punk band Malaria!), Erika Janunger and Russian DJ and producer Nina Kraviz. The new album is accompanied by a new stripped down live show—no ensemble this time, just the three protagonists and a specially built stage set. The visuals will be created by Brandt Brauer Frick affiliated production company Park Bennett, who make all of the bands videos and also came up with the overall visual concept for the album inspired by Fluxus art of the ’60s. KEY POINTS • Guest vocals from - Jamie Lidell, Om’mas Keith (Grammy nominated producer of Frank Ocean’s ‘Channel Orange’, Kanye West, Jay Z), Gudrun Gut (Einsturzende Neubauten and German punk band Malaria!), Erika Janunger and Russian DJ and producer Nina Kraviz. • Video of: Plastic Like Your Mother feat. “It seemed like a good idea at the time…,” begins the explanation of Wire’s original motivation for ‘Change Becomes Us’. Not only was it a good idea, it actually turned into a superlative one. In spring 2012, Wire’s plan had been to review the rudimentary blueprints of songs that had never made it beyond a few live performances in 1979 and 1980 – a time when the band-members were in creative overdrive yet the band itself was disintegrating. The aim wasn’t simply to resuscitate and record old songs; in fact, many of them hadn’t become proper songs in the first place, existing only as basic ideas or undeveloped parts. Rather, the objective was to approach that unrealized work as an oblique strategy, a potential springboard for Wire’s contemporary, forward-looking processes – a possible point of departure for new compositions. This took place with Wire firing on all cylinders, as a four-piece studio entity again, the core line-up of Newman, Graham Lewis and Robert Grey now enhanced by guitarist Matthew Simms. Out of those sessions and subsequent extensive development and production, the ostensible source material became, in the classic Wire tradition, something quite other than what it may have once been – or what it might have become if it had been pursued in 1980. ‘Love Bends’ is a case in point. Its roots lie in a raucous, octavehopping number performed in February 1980 at the Electric Ballroom in Camden, but it’s now morphed, improbably, into an irresistible, totally modern pop song. Just as improbably, the gently lilting ‘Re-invent Your Second Wheel’ is tangentially connected to a performance piece that was mostly shouting and banging, executed by a stageful of Wire cronies in funny hats. Similarly transformed, ‘& Much Besides’ is a six-minute oneiric-melodic interlude that gives no hint of its putative origins in “Eastern Standard” – a dreary, obtuse three-minute track from the Electric Ballroom concert. Colin Newman’s songwriting and production on ‘Change Becomes Us’ reimagines the past in ways that ultimately break any substantive connection with it, making entirely new pieces – and these songs themselves enact Wire’s restless drive to become other, often thriving on a fundamental tension between opposing sonic characteristics. With its stop-start, soft-hard, quiet-loud structure, ‘Adore Your Island’ veers between prog and unhinged punk rock, never quite resolving itself; the drama of ‘Attractive Space’ hinges on a progressive splitting of the song’s personality, between its calm, expansive, anthemic orientation and an increasing sense of intensity and claustrophobia. ‘Change Becomes Us’ encapsulates the paradoxical essence of Wire’s creativity. The tendency of these new songs to refuse a single, settled identity is emblematic of the band’s everevolving aesthetic – one that’s always hinged on sustained tensions and oppositions: between the familiar and the unfamiliar, the comfortable and the unsettling, the melodic and the brutal, the cerebral and the visceral, the smart and the moronic, the obvious and the inscrutable, the rational and the absurd. This intrinsic, core ambivalence generates the essential otherness that has characterized Wire’s most memorable and distinctive work – from the epochal innovations of ‘Chairs’Missing’ and ‘154’ to the electronic-pop deconstructions of ‘A Bell Is A Cup…’ to the postmodern-punk expressionism of ‘Send’ and the widescreen lyricism of ‘Red Barked Tree’. ‘Change Becomes Us’ is an undeniable part of that illustrious lineage. Definitely more than just a good idea at the time.

In a world in which upstart DiY talent is flooding the gates of electronic music, a few recent voices have been so strong as to be startling. Lapalux - AKA 25-year-old Stuart Howard - is certainly one such. As singular as a brilliant artist always should be, his instinctive understanding of the atmospheric power of texture grips the ear immediately on listening. 'Nostalchic' is his debut album, mission statement, and the climax of many years of studying his craft. The amalgam of words that make the title is aptly, and perhaps knowingly chosen. The album evokes nostalgia without ever sounding nostalgic, and Howard may have had his tongue in his chic when he added the second half of the title. The album is his most focused document to date, adding his beloved R&B and soul into elements of house and hip hop, all with the trademark Lapalux finish; infectious, lopsided swing and achingly deep texture. Lapalux was raised in rural Essex, midway between countryside and town; the classic, isolated hinterland that's produced many a distinctive British voice. There's a yearning sense to the record that it's tempting to relate to the young Howard's dreams about what his eventual escape into larger life might be. He certainly had a dream start when a shot-in-the-dark email to electronic hothouse Brainfeeder was immediately answered by label head Flying Lotus himself, who quickly moved on to sign him. To this day, Lapalux remains the only British artist on the Los Angeles based label. Having made fans out of Diplo and SBTRKT, remixed everyone from Lianne La Havas via Crystal Fighters to Bonobo, Tawiah, AlunaGeorge and Speech Debelle, as well as supporting FlyLo and playing the main stage at Sonar and in Japan with Clark, it's prime time for Lapalux's debut full length. Happily, it was well worth the wait. Redeye Distribution, 449-A Trollingwood Rd Haw River, NC 27258 USA Contact: Lori Miller - lori@redeyeusa.com www.redeyeusa.com

BIRDS and ARROWS create unique music that is “full of romance and energy”, “enchanting”, and “the kind you fall in love with”. Their third full length record "Coyotes" is no exception. The Chapel Hill/Durham NC based trio worked with an impressive cast of local and national talent to create Coyotes. Robert Sledge of Ben Folds Five, Dirk Shumaker of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and James Wallace of Mount Shuma Moriah are just a few of the special guests that where involved in the making of this record. Produced and mixed by Chris Stamey of the dBs, “Coyotes” promises to be Birds and Arrows’ best effort as a band to date. Chris calls “Coyotes”, "An amazing record, overflowing with invention, dedication and exuberance.” This new group of songs on "Coyotes"embrace the original folk spirit of Birds and Arrows, combined with the confidence and experience in songwriting that comes with playing music together for over 6 years. The wistful and nostalgic "Firefly" (the album's opening track) evokes memories of youth, first love and the scars of rejection that resonate with everyone throughout a lifetime. Marie Garlock and Andrew Syn Synowiez of Hueism Pictures have this to say about Firefly. "The sound of Birds & Arrows’ “Firefly” feels like coming to the edge of something, shedding layers, listening to swells and nuances of emotion and thought that can directly transport you to a past (or bring this past suddenly into your present)". The band explores biographical song crafting on Coyotes's third track, "The Rest of Your Life", which is a quirky and endearing tribute to the career of Woody Allen. The group was formed in 2007 by husband and wife Andrea and Pete Connolly, who released 2 critically acclaimed EPs. Grayson Currin of Shuffle Magazine praised “Woodgrain Heart” as “complementary voices wrapping together in rustic contentment and comfort, like a happy pair making music because that’s how love makes them feel.” In 2009, Josh Starmer joined the group on cello during the recording of the band’s first full length record “Starmaker”. Upon its release, “Starmaker” was picked by the North Carolina, Triangle based Indee “Sta pendent Weekly as the “Album of the Month”. In 2011 Birds and Arrows released its second full length record “We’re Gonna Run” which was revered as “the best moment of the band’s career, a promise that they’ve got real range.” Frank Stasio of NPR's The State of Things noted “The honeymoon sweetness of their earlier work has been replaced with a maturity and depth appropriate for musicians whose lives and work are gaining seriousness and acclaim.” In 2012 the band began recording its third full length release, Coyotes. The record is saturated with imagery from the bucolic surroundings of the Connolly's new home, a 19th-century school house-turned-cabin nestled in the country count a half hour north of Durham, NC. Corbie Hill of Independent Weekly noted "After six years as a band, it seems as if the Connollys have come to a point of comfort, not only musically but personally: Their new rural home, where they moved in early 2012, enables these two to live as they have wanted to for years. Andrea is surrounded by horses, while Pete drags fields and mends fences in the rural quiet." Over the years, Birds and Arrows have developed a rich sound that is much more than the sum of their parts. The romance between Andrea and Pete's voices is distinctly captivating and intertwines with Josh's beautiful yet haunting cello melodies. Together they accomplish an el elegant, warm sound that is truly their own. Their compelling and road tested live show appeals to a surprisingly wide range of audiences; they are the cherished rock band for folk lovers and the favorite folk group for rock fans.

Dave Alvin Ashgrove

NATIONAL release date: 03.19.2013 Almost one decade ago the release of Ashgrove reminded the world that the electric guitar still had a home in Dave Alvin’s hands. With the amps on high, Dave Alvin produced one of his career’s best and reminded fans that he couldn’t neatly be placed into any particular genre. As a tip of the hat to the work itself, Yep Roc Records is proud to release Ashgrove for the first time ever on 180 gram vinyl.

"When I was writing and recording the songs for my album Ashgrove, I was trying to capture a classic electric folk blues feel. Around the same time UNCUT magazine asked me to record a version of Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" for a Dylan tribute CD they were doing. The timing seemed right. Bob's songs have always been a tough and unique blend of the folk and the blues traditions that I identify with. So it makes perfect sense to me to include my version of this Dylan standard on the vinyl issue of my album Ashgrove." - Dave Alvin Highlights: • First time ever pressed to vinyl • 2xLP on 180 gram vinyl • Bonus track “Highway 61” • Previous Yep Roc Releases: Eleven Eleven Expanded, Eleven Eleven, Chris Gaffney Tribute: The Man Of Somebody’s Dreams, Dave Alvin And The Guilty Women, West Of The West, Great American Music Galaxy Key Markets: San Francisco - Oakland - San Jose, Los Angeles, New York, Denver, Portland, Seattle – Tacoma, Chicago, DC, San Diego, Boston, Houston, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Austin Track Listing: 01. Black Pus

All My Relations Thrill - 322

Black Pus is Brian Chippendale, who rose to prominence as the drummer of noise rock titans Lightning Bolt and Mindflayer. The first Black Pus CD-R was self released in early 2006, and was a collection of ferocious free jazz, multi-tracked on Chippendale’s cassette fourtrack. Enamored of the control of recording solo, Chippendale followed with more CD-Rs, and began playing live under the Black Pus moniker. He refined the Black Pus sound over numerous selfreleased CDs and 2011’s Primordial Pus on Load Records, replacing the saxophone with a drum-mounted oscillator and experimenting with pop structures. The oscillator creates gigantic bass tones that are then fed through a series of pedals. Over the course of the past several years Chippendale has been hand-picked by Björk and The Flaming Lips as a collaborator, and recruited by Andrew W.K. for Lee “Scratch” Perry’s 2008 album Repentance. All My Relations is constant forward motion and audible physicality. Chippendale’s furious drumming style is ever present and instantly recognizable, but the pop element, which Chippendale explored in more contained ways on earlier Black Pus releases, is more fully integrated. Tracks like “1000 Years” and “Hear No Evil” bear a snarl and a smile, the sound of wild abandon that is both aggressive and inviting. Chippendale creates maximalist music out of the simple elements of drums, vocals, and an oscillator triggered by the kick drum, looping and repeating phrases and rhythms in a way that can only be called meditative. The album closes with “A Better Man,” an almost ten minute epic that expertly alternates between the minimal pulse of the kick drum and oscillator and some of the most voracious and unrestrained drumming on the album. For the first time with any group he’s been a part of, Chippendale fully embraced the studio to realize All My Relations. He entrusted recording and producing to Keith Souza and Seth Manchester (who have worked with The Body, Battles and The Skull Defekts) at Machines with Magnets in Pawtucket, RI. All My Relations retains the expansive, primal sound of Chippendale’s earlier recordings, enhanced by the clarity of the studio. Black Pus has attained vicious transcendence.

For this recording the band set out to make a record like Captain Beefheart’s Mirror Man, entering the studio with a blank canvas and laying things down quickly. The resulting songs combine the bands more pop-oriented qualities alongside their more spaced out ethereal thoughts. The resulting sessions led to songs that were improvised or written immediately before recording, and within days a series of raw, live recordings had been completed. From there the initial recordings were chopped up, mixed around, and reassembled into the final product: a beautifully lush and patient masterpiece.

As part of our 20th Annivesary we are happy to offer Roomsound on the vinyl format for the very first time. Cut by Paul Gold at Salt Mastering and pressed on high quality virgin vinyl, Roomsound is presented in a deluxe custom silk-screened jacket with an art-worked inner sleeve and free download coupon. Roomsound covers the same rustic, slightly ramshackle back forty that Tim Rutili has been ploughing through since his previous band Red Red Meat. Only this time the tilled bedrock unveils the most vividly colored, luring crop of songs Rutili has ever harvested. The sleepy, country-blues picking and autumnal backwoods melodies are accented with striking splashes of electronic tone color, obsolete keyboards and off-kilter percussion. Lyrically, Roomsound penetrates the breath of pirates, poison apples at a tango contest and the waiting room between death and canonization where missionaries have quit and 19th-century whores have been rescued for all the wrong reasons. Masterfully engineered by Brian Deck, the album is vaulted far beyond the sum of its parts.

GENRE : ROCK FILE UNDER: “Z” Zedek, Thalia “C” Come RELEASE DATE : March 19, 2013 NO EXPORT TO EUROPE Thalia Zedek might be entering the fourth decade of her career as one EXPORTABLE TO JAPAN

of the most singular voices in rock, but she shows no signs of creative fatigue. Throughout the 80s she rose to prominence fronting Uzi and Live Skull, before founding Come with Chris Brokaw of Codeine in 1990. After Come called it a day in 2001, Zedek began making music under her own name to high acclaim. Via is Zedek’s fourth solo album (and third on Thrill Jockey). It further cements Zedek’s position as a bandleader, a songwriter, and as a pioneer who, like Kim Gordon, Kim Deal, Lydia Lunch, and Patti Smith, paved the way for so many others.

On Via, Zedek presents a collection of songs that range from the harrowing to the heartfelt. The opener “Walk Away” is a triumphantly melancholic exploration of living with ghosts, with Zedek’s richly emotive voice augmented by David Michael Curry’s gravelly viola and Mel Lederman’s measured piano. Via also features some of Zedek’s noisiest material in some time. Halfway through “Want You To Know,” Zedek’s guitar erupts into a wash of fuzz, foreshadowing the climax of pounding drums and psychedelic soloing. Via is an album about recovery, loyalty, chance, and gratitude: universal themes that become stirring in Zedek’s hands. The album was written during two distinct sessions over the course of four years. The first set of songs was written during the period of touring after the release of Liars and Prayers with longtime drummer Daniel Coughlin, who was also in Come. After Coughlin’s departure from the band, Zedek recruited Son Volt drummer Dave Bryson, who’s simple, spacious playing allowed her to stretch and experiment with new sounds and ideas. It was recorded by Andrew Schneider at New Alliance and Translator Audio in June and September of 2012. Via has a gravitational field, a magnetic pull brought on by the weight of the words and the mass of the sounds created. Regardless of her status as a pioneering woman in independent rock, Thalia Zedek’s music stands on its own in its startling honesty.

GENRE : ELECTRONIC/EXPERIMENTAL FILE UNDER: “S” Stygian Stride “R” Rhyton RELEASE DATE : March 19, 2013 NO EXPORT TRACK LISTING: Stygian Stride is Jimy SeiTang, a New York based musician in the No Neck Blues Band axis who, as a member of Psychic Ills and most currently with Rhyton, was brought up in the midst of the groundswell of avant-garde and improvised psychedlic music in New York City over the past decade. On this, his debut solo release, SeiTang has moved away from rock music completely, instead turning his attention to gauzy electronic music reminiscent of Gas and the classic era of Mille Plateaux and Chain Reaction, with nods to Manuel Göttsching and Tangerine Dream. What made SeiTang such an integral part of the improv based bands he’s worked with, his ability to listen and communicate, reacting in time to his bandmatess aethetic and musical choices, is the same thing that makes Stygian Stride a successful endeavor. When writing and recording the album, he was reacting similarly to the different facets of the machines’ unique temperaments, learning the particular peronalities of each piece of equipment and facilitating the creation of something greater than the sum of its parts. While melodic and rhymic repetitiveness are the backbone of Stygian Stride’s music, each piece subtly evolves at its own pace and in its own way. “Hindsight” is pushed forward by a steady, muted kick, and washes of synth that coalesce into a ghostly melody. “Drift” features multi-layered rhythmic textures that shift in and out of phase, anchored by a heavy drone, and “Taiga” features a similarly phased synthesizer arppegio. The album is bookended by two beatless tracks. While “Celestial Stems” opens the album with gentle, hypnotic sequencer patterns, closer “Fade Into Bolivian” is one long, slow-moving forboding organ melody over a deep, anxious drone reminiscent of Popul Vuh. Rather than composing and recording on a laptop, SeiTang sought out and collected vintage, analog equipment and conceived the album without MIDI synching. It was recorded by Jason Meagher at Black Dirt Studios (D. Charles Speer, Jack Rose, Expo ’70, Blues Control), and mastered by CGB at Dubplates & Mastering in Berlin. Stygian Stride shows a side of SeiTang’s artistry coming to light that has up to this point laid dormant, just under the surface. This album is the beginning of an exploration of the intersection of the mind-expanding and the mechanized.

DEAD SKELETONS Dead Magick CATALOGUE NO: FORMAT: PRICE: RELEASE DATE: LABEL: BARCODE: GENRE:

AUK103LP 2LP (180GRM) $39.99 19th March 2013 ‘a’ Records LP: 5055300334992 ROCK

Available on 180 grm black vinyl 2LP , This edition is limited to 500 copies What is a “dead skeleton”? Can such an entity exist? Sonic wizards Jón Sæmundur, Henrik Björnsson and Ryan Carlson Van Kriedt probe such questions of depth and intensity on their first full-length double LP Dead Magick. This album illuminates the fact that magick - as well as music - is far from “dead.” In fact, Dead Magick is a vibrant collection of mystical meanderings through space, time, and all that is. Dead Magick formulates and communicates dynamic concepts, as well as illustrates them via the oldest form of human expression: music. Dead Magick is akin to a musical hologram. The overall structure replicates itself in its most minute detail. The magick, however, is not only in the mix. There is also magick in the moment in time that the sound vibrations were recorded. Yet, there is a transcendent quality to the work, most viscerally experienced in the lyrical mantras, established through repetition, a repetition distinctly non-choral in nature. It could be loosely compared to so-called “trance” or “drone” genres; however, these terms are inadequate to describe the quality of the sound. Dead Magick transcends genre or classification, as well as space and time, life and death. Moreover, just as the Dead philosophy: “All is one is all” is cyclical both linguistically and conceptually, so too are the songs these sonic warlocks spin. While the Dead philosophy animates ages-old concepts of profound importance, it also achieves the inverse: it takes very new ideas and articulates them through the oldest form of expression known to man: music. Dead Magick harkens back to the not-so-distant past, when the album, rather than the song, was king. Merging the ancient with the modern, Dead Skeletons rephrase primordial wisdom in a manner accessible to all. It is a symphonic work; it must be experienced end-to-end - from side a, song one, to side d, song twelve - in order to fully appreciate its profundity. Nonetheless, Dead Magick is accessible on a song-bysong basis, as each is a world unto itself, encapsulating firmly rooted musical and philosophical content. These grand concepts are only refracted, reflected, and magnified through an appreciation of its individual role in the grander schema of the album as a whole, and once again vis-à-vis the greater Dead philosophy (see www.dead.is).

HANNI EL KHATIB “ FAMILY / PENNY ” INNOVATIVE LEISURE RECORDS

STREET DATE: 3/19/13 ARTIST: Hanni El Khatib TITLE: Family / Penny FORMAT: 12” VINYL (double-sided front cover) CATALOGUE: IL1043 FILE UNDER: Alternative / Rock SRP: $8.99 UPC: 634457578814

Bio When Hanni El Khatib started out, he was just a skater kid playing the world’s worst guitar and singing by himself. Inspired by a long line of determined do-it-for-themselves musicians winding back through punk and psychedelia to rock ‘n’ roll and early r&b and finally the first scratchy years of the blues, he’d record song after bare-bones song—in between day jobs and night life—just because he had things he wanted to sing about. Then in 2010 from a chance meeting, up-and-coming indie label Innovative Leisure recognized that there was something huge hiding in those little songs. And so El Khatib made his official full-power soul ‘n’ rock ‘n’ roll debut (on vinyl too) in 2010. Soon his music would overtake him completely. By the time his first album Will The Guns Come Out was released in 2011, he clawed out a space of his own musically and left his job as creative director at streetwear label HUF as well as his hometown of San Francisco to become part-owner of (and in-house Art Director) Innovative Leisure in Los Angeles, California. It had been the kind of year where anything that could happen would happen. In 2012, however, Hanni El Khatib showed up to record his second album with just the clothes on his back—no guitar, no fancy almost-finished demos, and only about three weeks time to get from start to finish. While on tour, he'd met Dan Auerbach in a bar in Paris and after some whiskey got involved, they decided to partner up in Auerbach’s studio in Nashville. The idea was to erase everything he’d become comfortable with and to make an album out of only raw instinct and inspiration. The result is Head In The Dirt, produced by Auerbach, in which El Khatib takes a lucky eleven songs and makes the entire history of rebel music something all his own. He’s got cut-to-the-bone rhythm ‘n’ blues (“Save Me”) and overcranked Stooges-style stompers (“Family”). He’s got bottomless Black Sabbath riff-outs (the back half of “Pay No Mind”) and dub-a-delic garageland rockers (“Nobody Move”) that call up the spirits of the Clash and the Equals both. His “Low” is just one Andre 3000 remix away from a club anthem, “Penny” is his stuckin-your-head pop hit and “Sinking In The Sand” is his smash-your-head freak-out. The plan that first day in Nashville might have been to make something out of nothing — but by the end of Head In The Dirt, you’ll realize that Hanni El Khatib actually made something out of everything.

TIJUANA PANTHERS “TONY’S SONG” b/w “ONE WAY TICKET” I N N OVAT I V E L E I S U R E R EC O R D S

Item ID (cat#): IL1035 Artist: Tijuana Panthers Title: Tony’s Song b/w One Way Ticket UPC: 634457578975 Release Date: 3/19/13 List Price: $7.99 Label: Innovative Leisure Packaging: 7” record in brown paper bag sleeve For Fans Of: Buzzcocks, FIDLAR, Minutemen, Soft Pack, Descendants Genre: Alternative/Rock

BIO The Tijuana Panthers got their name from the little black ceramic panther that was a present from their neighbor Max Baker—yes, the Max Baker who they named their first album after, and who deserves a bio all his own—and they got their sound from that strange place where punk bands crash into pop music and come out the other side, bristling with hooks and hitting three-part harmonies almost by happy accident. Even the Beach Boys were once a garage band, and after them came the waves of kids playing rock ‘n’ roll somewhere between the surf and the surface streets. Then when punk showed up in the ‘70s, it was just an adjustment in hairstyle and speed. The Buzzcocks did this a whole hemisphere away, the Real Kids and the Modern Lovers did it on the other side of the country, and the Crowd and the Simpletones did it just a few towns over. And now Tijuana Panthers come striding proudly out of their hometown of Long Beach, California, with Semi-Sweet, their most fully realized album yet. The first single from Semi-Sweet, “Tony’s Song” matches the relentless energy of the Wipers with instantly catchy beach-punk harmonies while the B-side is a pitch-perfect Nerves cover, a reverent redo of “One Way Ticket” by a band that in sound and sentiment both were pretty much the Tijuana Panthers of their day.

“Cribbing as much from Brian Wilson’s lyrical topics as they take from Dick Dale’s reverb-soaked guitar tone” - NOISEY/VICE “[The music of the Tijuana Panthers] sounds something like they had spent an afternoon with Jan and Dean sharing fish tacos with Quentin Tarantino, before laying down some 4-track recordings with The Cramps in a sunlit garage.” - LA WEEKLY

RAINBOW AND Thin Lizzy were two of the biggest names in rock during the 70s so when Rainbow dispensed with the services of bassist Jimmy Bain and Thin Lizzy dismissed guitarist Brian Robertson it was almost inevitable that the two would join forces to create a new powerhouse rock group. Indeed, with Bain and Robertson sharing a London flat together the musical combination was quickly cemented going under the forceful moniker of Wild Horses. Renowned for their hair raising personalities Robertson and Bain delivered explosive guitar driven tracks big on hooks but smooth enough to appeal to radio. Amongst the material on offer were songs co-written by Robertson’s former Lizzy band mates Scott Gorham and Phil Lynott. Originally released in April 1980, the band’s debut album still sounds exciting and fresh, a testimony to the talent involved.

‘Stand Your Ground’, originally issued in May 1981, found the band changing the line-up with Neil Carter departing for pastures new (going on to join UFO) and being replaced by the previously unknown John Lockton. Enlisting the help of Producer/Engineer Kit Woolven who had previously worked with Thin Lizzy and on Phil Lynott’s two solo albums, the band headed into Good Earth Studio, owned and operated by another Lizzy alumnus, Tony Visconti. In keeping with the bands volatile reputation the recordings were the subject of fractious conflict between Bain and Robertson, the two men at odds with the direction the music was taking. With that in mind, ‘Stand Your Ground’ is a diverse and exciting record full of surprises set amidst an atmosphere of tension and nervous energy. Not surprisingly it was the final record from the band, both principals opting to go their separate ways.

HE MAY not be internationally well known but Freddie Salem is one of the most impressive American rock guitarists to have emerged in the 1980s. As a member of Southern guitar gods the Outlaws, Freddie injected feisty guitar pyrotechnics into the band’s most commercially successful albums like ‘Ghost Riders’ and ‘Los Hombres Malos’, before cutting loose to record a solo album. This was his debut, and so far only, solo album, recorded for the Epic (Sony) label in 1982 and it showcased Freddie in valedictory mood, looking to spread his wings with various shades of guitar-fuelled mayhem. Selfproduced and recorded in New York City, the album captured a healthy mixture of Manhattan’s manic pace whilst still boasting a Southern rock tinge, proving that you can take the man out of the country but you can’t take the country out of the man. ‘Cat Dance’ is a fine album indeed, boasting a healthy selection of solid and memorable hard rock tracks and blessed with lashings of Freddie’s blistering guitar work, including hip thrusting riffs and lightning fast solos. Released just as Sony laid off half of their US staff in a frantic cost cutting exercise, the album failed to make a commercial impact and was left to find its own audience.

LIGHTNING RAIDERS ‘SWEET REVENGE’ CAT NO: FORMAT: PRICE: LABEL: BARCODE: GENRE: PACKAGING:

TRACKS: Sweet Revenge; Rowdies; Addiction; Soul Rescue; Criminal World; Citizens; Disguises; Made In Japan – Bonus Tracks: Psychedelic Musik; Views

Based in West London, the Lightning Raiders carved out a serious reputation during the early 80s as an uncompromising quartet that took every opportunity to tear down barriers and set fire to tradition. Half punk, half metal and blessed with an anything goes attitude, the band’s live reputation for militant confrontation soon turned into an anything can happen in the next half hour kind of event. With musical links to Motorhead, the Pink Fairies, the Sex Pistols, Kilburn & The High Roads and many more, their reputation for setting the stage on fire was second to none. Signed by Island Records, the band recorded tracks for their debut album at the Who’s Ramport Studios, only to find half way through that the label’s direction had changed and that they were no longer considered part of the plan. The eight songs on this record are the surviving mixed tracks from those sessions, giving us a taste of what would have been if the band had been allowed to continue on their path to fame and fortune.

MARCH 19TH NIAGARA ‘OTTO’ CAT NO: FORMAT: PRICE: LABEL: BARCODE: GENRE: PACKAGING:

TRACKS: 1.Eight 2.Superbe 3.Seal 4.Watershipdown 5.Etacarinae 6. E.V.A. 7. Galaxy Glacier 8. Love Me Love Me

Niagara is the collaborative project of Turin-based singers/producers David Tomat (TOMAT / N.A.M.B./ GEMINI EXCERPT) and Gabriele Ottino (N.A.M.B. / Milena Lovesick / GEMINI EXCERPT), who like to take a less conventional approach to composition. On ‘Otto’, their debut album, Niagara blend together a heady mixture of experimental pop, electronica and psychedelia to create their own brand of ‘avant-psych-tronica’. The first single, ‘Seal’, is a joyously off-kilter mandolin-fueled pop paean to summer, with an uplifting chorus filled with handclaps, sweet west-coast harmonies and humourously surreal lyrics. ‘Watershipdown’ recalls the trippier, spacier synth-fuelled explorations of The Flaming Lips, with a driving beat, drones and chopped vocal samples. It all ends with the whimsical ‘Love Me Love Me’ skipping lightly through a garden of syncopated percussion. The album was recorded by Niagara and mixed by G.U.P. Alcaro at Superbudda Studio in Turin and mastered by Francesco Donandello at Calyx Mastering Studio in Berlin.

LP Pink Vinyl + Download. UK noise-drenched pop band Fawn Spots and California weirdo scuzz renegades Cum Stain release their split LP Wedding Dress. The release features four tracks by the 5 month old new Fawn Spots line up, and six tracks by Cum Stain. The cover artwork has been designed by Joe Prendergast of ex-Tubelord and now JOEY FOURR acclaim. Burger Records is releasing a cassette version of the LP. To say the LP is schizophrenic is an understatement. Fawn Spots’ songs are laced with a deep seated love of the passionate college punk of Husker Du, driving rawness of Rites of Spring and the hook laden chants of early Buzzcocks; Cum Stain’s tunes are true Burger Records riffs and rhymes, playing a tongue-in-ass version of The Ramones that sits comfortably alongside Nobunny (coincidentally Burger is Cum Stain’s spiritual home). Though the two bands are coming at Wedding Dress from two different directions, and continents, they’re united in playing a unique blend of dissatisfied pop – there’s a voyeuristic joy in Fawn Spots’ anguished pop tunes and Cum Stains’ satirical relationship analysis. Bad Paintings’ staffers have been lifelong fans of Californian sunkist punk, the dingy desperation of East Coast Hardcore and British alt-pop a la Comet Gain and Television Personalities. To bring together a band from a backwater in the UK and a band from the shores of California that share a twisted pop sensibility made perfect sense for the label. Burger Records and their artists have been a great inspiration behind Bad Paintings attitude and ethos – to work with them on this release is a dream come true. When pursued for a quote, Oliver, guitarist/singer in Fawn Spots, managed, “most of all I want to thank God for his support…mate I have no idea.” Sean, mastermind of Cum Stain managed something slightly more coherent… “I am more than excited to be releasing a record with these friendly fellows from across the sea! Keep it warm and sticky ya'll!” Fawn Spots have announced the first of several UK shows in support of the release: 15th Feb @ Flashback Records, London / 16th @ Leamington Spa / Track listing : Fawn spots. 1. Tailor made 2. Watered down 3. National anthem 4. Recorder / Cum stain : 5. Ghost love (dm version) 6. Sippy cup (dm version) 7. Bloody fingertips 8. Can't take it (typewriter version) 9. Behold! The debut album by Norwegian scum punk revivalists in The Good the Bad and the Zugly! Oslo is widely regarded as the ugliest capital in the world. It’s no wonder then that the city is breeding some of the most distasteful music that is around. The proudest example of this standard Oslo-filth is Fysisk Format's newest signing: The Good the Bad & the Zugly. The Good the Bad & The Zugly has produced four 7" that have caused shock and awe amongst Norwegian natives and brought comparisons to Dead Boys and GG Allin, as well as label-mates Haraball and Haust. Their debut album is entitled, Anti World Music and is produced by Tommy Manboy of Silver and Turbonegro. With a band name as infantile and cartoonish as it gets (based on the bass player’s longtime nickname Zugly), his band is not exactly a branding or promotional minded gang, this is genuinely p-u-n-k all the way. So frothingly angry, that it brings associations to the darkness and hatred of their black metal fellow countrymen. Musically, it’s incredibly tight, tough and catchy. This is not your sloppy three chord punk band, this is spent-all-of-adolescence-playing-punkrock-because-of-alienation-from-society-syndrome. Four of the members of The Good the Bad & the Zugly are regulars at Oslo's dirtiest beer bunkers and have played together in numerous bands throughout the years. The band first consolidated when the dirty dudes was approached by the repulsively fresh Lars, who demanded to be the singer. Being a professional psychologist, he soon manipulated the band into allowing him to take centre stage. The lyrics range from downright stupid “I ain’t got no job” to more substantial songs. “Reaction Formation” is a layered thing about the psychoanalytic defense mechanism when people go from one extreme to another, where middle ground is not an optional lifestyle. A true story about a friend of the band, who went from being an avid punk rocker to joining Al-Quaida, and another who went from being a junkie rock star to a Scientologist. Songs like “Smoke ’em ” with the lyrics, “out in the park, smoking doobies, with the good, the bad and the zugly groupies” and “Call The Cops” (I don’t give a fuck) speak for themselves.

powerdove CIS1056: DO YOU BURN? Annie Lewandowski comes from Minnesota, a place full of things that are long and longer: church services, dinner tables, and worry lines, to name a few. Somebody said there are ten thousand lakes there; if that’s true, each of them shows up in some little way in Annie’s songs.

WWW. CIRCLEINTOSQUARE. COM

She writes under the name powerdove, which began as a band of one in California in 2007. A document of this brief solo era can be found on her EP Live from the Maybeck House (s/r, 2010).

Press Inquiries:

Before long, powerdove evolved into a trio with Alex Vittum on percussion, and Jason Hoopes on bass.

Nathan Walker (Riot Act Media)

That trio recorded Be Mine in 2009, which was then released on Circle Into Square the following year.

nathan@riotactmedia.com

On her new album, "Do You Burn?", many of the songs were written along the scuzzy River Itchen

Label Inquiries:

in Hampshire, England, where Annie played concerts and went on the occasional European tour with

Tom Filepp (Circle Into Square)

the laptop composer Curtis McKinney. After her year spent down by the sea, she returned to the US,

info@circleintosquare.com

settling in upstate New York and writing the rest of the material on the new album. When it came time to record, Annie enlisted the help of an old California friend, John Dieterich (Deerhoof),

and a new French one, Thomas Bonvalet (L’ocelle Mare). Three great improvisers, they worked fast.

The result lies somewhere near the Marble Index, David Sylvian, Diane Cluck, and the Curtains

2 Under Awnings

(of which Annie is a former member). The roughness and fluidity of these tracks owe to their origin

in mostly live takes, which have also lent a certain intimacy to every sound: these are little songs

to love, but there is also great mystery here, and even menace.

5 Love Walked In 6 California

Powerdove will be touring the US and Europe in late spring with full band.

7 Flapping Wings 8 Red Can of Paint

Do You Burn? will be released on Circle into Square Records in March 2013.
