PAUL WELLER

DELUXE

INDIE ONLY! RELEASE

SONIK KICKS

STREET DATE: CD/LP - MARCH 27TH, 2012 Enjoying a constant critical high and a never ending creative peak, Paul Weller continues to push the boundaries with his forthcoming new album Sonik Kicks, scheduled for release on March 27th 2012 on Yep Roc Records. The album is the follow up to the Mercury Prize Award nominated Wake Up The Nation and is also Paul’s eleventh solo album. Once again, it's his best yet. For fans eager to hear a taste of what’s to come, Paul’s website previewed the first single “AroundThe Lake” in late November of last year at: paulweller.com The track is set to an excellent sequence from a short film called '24hrs, Pavey Ark' directed by Mike Moloney & John Hooper which Paul is massively into. 2012 will also mark two important anniversaries for Paul Weller. In 1977 (35 years ago) The Jam burst on to the music scene with their debut album In The City, which without question was one of the most important punk albums to ever be released. Since then Weller consistently changed and evolved his sound through his work with The Style Council and as a solo artist. It was 20 years ago in 1992 when Weller released his self-titled first ever solo album. With Sonik Kicks Paul Weller once again shakes up his palate and stirs his influences anew. He mixes pop art punch with soulful communication; jazzy explorations into psychedelia and dub with razor-sharp melodies and abstract soundscapes with clear-eyed forest-folk. HIGHLIGHTS: • Guest musicians include Noel Gallagher (Oasis) and Graham Coxon (Blur) • LP on 180 gram vinyl will include album digital download code • Performing in NYC in May - 35 years after Weller first played on US soil (w/ The Jam) RADIO: • First single, “That Dangerous Age” going for radio adds in early February • KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic has been spinning “Around the Lake” since November VIDEO: • A total of 5 videos for album tracks will be made and released via YouTube and other online outlets prior to release • First video for “Around the Lake,” on YouTube now • Social media campaign around 5 videos planned PRESS/TV: • MOJO cover feature • Performing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on May 17 • Performing on Friday Night w/ Jonathan Ross on BBC America in March • Other confirmed press: Rolling Stone, Q, NME and Uncut (cover) TRACK LISTING: 1. Overview

Artist: Daniel Rossen Title: Silent Hour / Golden Mile 3.20.12

"gorgeously still ... Rossen shows off his estimable tenor over a warm and immaculately recorded bed of pianos and woodwinds. The man knows what he’s doing." –– Stereogum

WARPCD332 / WARP332

Having written some of the most critically-acclaimed songs of the last several years as part of Grizzly Bear and Department of Eagles, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Daniel Rossen recorded a brand new collection of wholly personal songs on his debut solo release Silent Hour/Golden Mile. Before Grizzly Bear became a band that a bunch of people know, Daniel Rossen had never really tried his luck as that quintessential solo singer-songwriter. In fact, when he started writing the five trenchant songs that form his debut EP, he thought they might simply be demos for a new Grizzly Bear album or themes he’d soon forget. But late in 2011, these tunes started to feel for Rossen like a unified declaration ––about unease with the world around you, about indeterminacy in your own life, and the ability somehow to navigate both Essentially all of the instruments, singing, arranging and production is by Rossen himself, with a bit of help from friends Scott Hirsch (lap steel), Eric Slick of Dr. Dog (drums on 'Golden Mile') and Ian Davis & Kris Nolte (horn arrangements). Unlike Grizzly Bear's more meticulous and piecemeal approach to songcraft and recording, much of what is heard on this EP are first takes, which yields something new, yet inherently Rossen's.

Overview

Artist: Battles Title: Dross Glop 3

3.20.2012 WRP9329

“...as delightfully fucked up as it is musically seamless” —Filter Magazine Battles proudly present the third in a series of highly anticipated remixes from their 2011 album Gloss Drop. Each release in the series comes exclusively on 12“ vinyl (not initially available on digital) and contains stunning, exclusive re-works of the original album art. The remixes are titled Dross Glop 1, 2, 3...etc. through the 4th and final 12”, which will be released exclusively for Record Store Day 2012. This 3rd release features deeper interpretations of the album from Silent Servant of Sandwell District, Kangding Ray and electronic pioneers Qluster. Silent Servant’s minimal sound struck electronic headlines as a member of the techno magnate Sandwell District. His solo productions garner a trademark mechanical shiver, doused in ambient- at time orchestral echoes. “Toddler” underwent remix treatment from Kangding Ray, the mysterious German master of dark, ascetic, dubstep-derived techno-pop. As a key artist on Raster-Noton, Kangding Ray skillfully dance-floor ready techno without obscuring the melody. Qluster has cemented themselves as one of the most important electronic bands in German history. Since their first emergence in 1969 as Kluster, pioneer Hans-Joachim Roedelius has collaborated with Brian Eno, and most recently Onnen Bock of the Berlin Philharmonic. Continuing to turn heads of a new generation through re-working Battles’ “Dominican Fade”. NO EXPORTS

TREVOR JACKSON PRESENTS

PRESENTS

INDUSTRIAL / POST PUNK / EBM: CLASSICS & RARITIES 80 - 88 Strut present ‘Metal Dance’, a new compilation from one of the UK’s most respected DJ / producers, the man behind Playgroup and original founder of the legendary label Output Recordings, Trevor Jackson. Drawing on the specials that have peppered Jackson’s DJ sets for over a decade, ‘Metal Dance’ hones in on the more underground and danceable side of industrial, post-punk and EBM (Electronic Body Music), a phrase coined by Ralf Hütter of Kraftwerk but honed by later bands like DAF and Front 242 as socialist realist aesthetics were dragged onto the dancefloor during the mid-‘80s. Herein lie sounds that have heavily influenced today’s crop of artists and labels – from DFA and MGMT to Factory Floor and Hot Chip. Jackson cherry-picks classics and rarities from this era, including a new edit of Nitzer Ebb favourite ‘Control I’m Here’ (sampled on Quartz’ rave classic ‘Meltdown’), the cold dance of Analysis’ ‘Surface Tension’, Neon’s dark ‘Voices’, re-interpreting a Master C&J riff from the early days of Chicago house, and hard-hitting dubs from Pete Shelley, Alien Sex Fiend and more. Elsewhere on the album, Jackson brings in unexpected cold wave gems – a track from cult John Carpenter film ‘Escape From New York’ remixed by Klein & MBO’s Mario Boncaldo, a lost album track by avant garde Spanish artist Diseno Corbusier and a UK promo-only mix of Yello’s ‘You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess’. Following his award-winning graphic design work for Soulwax and fresh from projects with car giants Lexus and electro heroes Chromeo, Jackson draws on his considerable status as an artist and graphic designer with some stunning package graphics on ‘Metal Dance’. The album is released as a deluxe digipak (2CD), gatefold (2LP) and digital. KEY POINTS • first compilation by Trevor Jackson in over 8 years • timely release of a sound that has influenced many from DFA and MGMT to Hot Chip • many tracks appearing on CD and digital release for the first time • includes exclusive edits of tracks by Nitzer Ebb and Fini Tribe • features superb graphics from Trevor Jackson, who is now a major digital artist

“The mark of a great DJ is one who knows that hip-hop came from disco. That is the truth of the matter...” Johnny 'D' DeMairo has always been about disco. It was something that underpinned his seminal house label Henry Street Music, the imprint he set up with Tommy Musto in 1993. It was a place where the particles of classic disco and the four-to-the-floor throb of house music were smashed together to create something new, something that would extend the life of these underground anthems and introduce them to a new audience. Armand Van Helden, Kenny Dope, Lil' Louie Vega, Terry Hunter, DJ Sneak, Todd Terry, DJ Duke; they all turned it out for Henry Street, and tracks like Dope's 'The Bomb! (These Sounds Fall Into My Mind)' and Van Helden's 'The Funk Phenomena' made it a pivotal part of house music history. But the story starts much earlier than that in Brooklyn, New York, in the 80s. Born into a blue-collar Italian-American household, it would have been virtually impossible for DeMairo to avoid the streetlife happening outside his front door. Block parties, rollerskating, graffiti, disco, boogie, electro, freestyle and hip-hop were consuming kids from all backgrounds, of all colours. At 12, he started to learn how to DJ using 'the absolute worst turntables ever made' – a pair of Lafayette T-2000s bought him by his father. The next year he got his first pair of Technics 1200 MK IIs, some of the first to arrive in New York. Working in the various businesses owned by his extended family, he would make a wage during the day and then play the parties at night and on the weekend, while the mixtapes he distributed were slowly taking on a life of their own. Until any real money from DJing started coming in, he'd have to hide the growing mass of records he'd bought from his parents. “My father thought I was blowing all my money on vinyl. Which I was. Now 80,000 records later, I can remember where almost every record came from,” he says. Making contacts among the DJ-only record pools, and then meeting the likes of Louie Vega, Todd Terry and Kenny Dope on the club circuit, DeMairo joined a promotion company called the Street Information Network, soon using it to create networks of his own; CJ Mackintosh in London, Terry Hunter in Chicago, 95 North in Washington, and, of course, all those New York connections. When it came time to launch his own label, the fledgling Henry Street (named after a cross street in his Brooklyn neighbourhood), he could call on the most smouldering of talents in house music to make it great. But that is another story... This selection is about the tracks that would inform Henry Street, the tracks found deep within the complex strings of its DNA, the tracks championed by Pettibone on Kiss or by Washington at the Studio, or those dredged from crates across the city. Half-heard anthems from Italy tracked down through forensic research in the record shops of the five boroughs, rare dub versions of classics that you won't be finding on eBay anytime soon. This is real disco. “These are the secret weapon tracks, but more personal to me and people from my world. I'm pulling records from different places. This is how I play records. It's not fake. I have never been a 'set DJ' and always played just about every genre of music, from the fastest uptempo disco anthem, to the most ghetto rap jam to Zeppelin. Music is music. A good DJ can play it all. A great DJ can play it all technically correct!”

Magic Castles had self-released three albums (two in 2009), all of which are currently out of print, before fans landed a You Tube video in the hands of the legendary Anton Newcombe (Brian Jonestown Massacre) via the We Are The Radio/Dead TV experimental social media phenomenon in 2010. On hearing the tracks Anton quickly asked the band to sign to his label which they did in 2011. Magic Castles are a band from Minneapolis Minnesota that was abruptly formed in 2006 by Jason Edmonds, with the help of guitar-ace Jeremiah Doering and a rotating cast of players and friends. Lyrically concerned with trolls, golden birds, and other creatures conjured from the lands of the mushroomed mind, the band takes a journey-is-better-than-the destination approach. Inspired by Spacemen 3, Skygreen Leopards, Galaxie 500, the band combines warm Farfisa drones with hazy guitars and bright vocal harmonies to create something similar without sounding redundant. Whether it be storybook psych, mildewy dark garage, or forest folk, the band crafts its songs using an expansive approach that deftly oscillates between traditional song form and stretched-out, slowly unwinding abstract passages, managing both poles without a smudge of awkwardness. Great albums by The Black Angels & Black Mountain have harbored the resurgence of psychedelic drone rock, and the psychedelic folk revival catapulted Devendra Banhart and Fleet Foxes to stardom - somewhere in the middle lies the sound of Magic Castles. Sit back, light up a smoke and enjoy!

GENRE : ROCK / PSYCHEDELIC FILE UNDER: “W” White Hills White Hills newest and most energized recording to date is bursting with raw energy packed into their most concise songs to date. Fear not long time White Hills fans, there is still loads of killer guitar work and fuzzed out psychedelia on Frying on this Rock. Their highly sought after and deluxe vinyl editions as well as the super limited CDR and 7” releases have made them a band who get talked about as much in reviews as they do on social networks. Their boundless live performances, especially the higher profile ones at ATP New York, Supersonic and several Roadburn Festivals, or their dates with The Flaming Lips and Sleep have established White Hills as one of the most talked about space rock bands currently performing. Their 2011 H-p1 album topped several UK end of the year lists including one of the world’s most influential record stores, Rough Trade. Frying on this Rock opens with an under five minute scorcher and closes with a 15 minute track that reminds us why space rock gatekeepers like Julian Cope were very early supporters. White Hills is guitarist Dave W. and bassist Ego Sensation. They are joined on this recording by frequent sonic collaborator Antronhy (drummer for Julian Cope) on treatments, synths, and backup vocals, and touring/recording drummer Nick Name. Frying on this Rock was recorded in the fall of 2011, when White Hills dug in at BC Studios in Brooklyn with the help of recording engineer Martin Bisi (Brian Eno, Sonic Youth, Swans, Herbie Hancock, Boredoms). Unlike many previous recordings that focused on spontaneity, the band brought new songs to the studio that had been honed on recent European and American tours. Bisi brought his technical expertise to achieve the band’s desire for a more separated sonic recording. The end result, Frying on this Rock, is an invigorating deep space rock album. An album that is at once able to channel the energy born of a collective anger into a swirling psychedelic, brutalising musical statement that mainlines the thrill of defiance straight to the listener’s heart. GENRE : FOLK/POP FILE UNDER: “R” Roberts, Luke In the year since Luke Roberts recorded his debut Big Bells and Dime Songs RELEASE DATE : March 20, 2012 (Thrill 283, Nov 2011) a lot has changed. Luke now owns a guitar (a Collings NO EXPORT 0002H model) that his sophomore album was written on, he has moved from TRACK LISTING: Brooklyn to Montana to Nashville, his childhood home, and the songs were written over a long period of time in his Brooklyn apartment (as opposed to largely on the bus down to the studio on the debut). The combination of changes made a significant and noticeable impact on the songwriting and arrangements found on The Iron Gates at Throop and Newport.

The album was recorded at Beech House in Nashville by Marky Nevers (Lambchop), revised and tweaked at a few studios in Brooklyn, and finally mixed at RonnieJone$ound by Kyle Spence (Harvey Milk). The Iron Gates at Throop and Newport is a big leap forward in Luke’s songwriting. While Luke’s plain spoken lyrics are still present, they are now embedded in far more complex and dynamic arrangements. Where the debut was a raw country blues style recording with minimal editing and accompaniment, Iron Gates features many additional players from drums to harmonica, and notably the fiddle and mandolin of country player Billy Contraraz, and the backing vocals of Emily Sunblad. The lyrics are again deeply personal and in many cases the songs speak of struggle, redemption and again, struggle. Luke has the uncanny ability to take deeply personal emotions such as the ones in “I Don’t Want You Anymore” and make them resonate with the listener as a shared experience. He is in the moment and you are in it with him: love, desire, loss, the search for a sense of belonging, and a sense of place, all of which are core human emotions. He is very much a person, who while no longer the freewheeling train hopper of his youth, is still traveling. Now his travels are philosophical searches for answers to life’s biggest questions. A potent example is “His Song”. A spiritual quest to find the “why”, the “what”, the “who”, and the “how” of it all. The ability to to lay bare not only the toughest of emotions but the search for answers in such a deceptively simple and relatable voice, makes Luke Roberts an utterly unique and compelling artist. The lovely instrumentation and arrangements of The Iron Gates and Throop and Newport make for a beautiful sounding album. Luke’s ability to capture many of life’s pivotal moments with such a simple and emotionally resonate voice makes him stand out as a songwriter and as a performer.

These songs are fiercely internal, which also makes them remarkably hard to shake...” – Pitchfork “...a sparse but striking debut... Amid all the guitar-strumming hipster-folk, Big Bells stands out as a small masterpiece of melancholy restraint.” – Metromix “Musically, the tracks can showcase poetic grace and fingerpicking chops (“Epcot Women”) as well as bare-bones, knuckle-dragging full-band excursions like “Somewhere to Run” and “Just Do It Blues” that conjure up the medicated hayseed jams as done by folks like Palace and Silver Jews.” – Filter

Live fast, die young and leave a good-looking corpse? How about play fast, die old and leave the next round of stiffs wondering what the shit their crusty old grandpop was up to back in the economically vibrant 20-teens, when liquid gold flowed down from Finland’s Kemi River and crisp American sawbucks grew on trees? If Split Cranium had a manifesto—which they don’t—they might at least consider endorsing that one, whatever it was, before giving us all the finger and getting on with it. “It” being a highly satisfying blitzkrieg of Finnish/Amero punk perpetrated by Jussi Lehtisalo (Circle, Pharaoh Overlord), Jukka Kröger, Samae Koskinen (Steel Mammoth) and Aaron Turner (Mamiffer/ex-ISIS), a token American brought in to soften potential US resistance to the Finns’ brash mastery of almost every style of rock worth mastering. Of course, it’s no coincidence that Mr. Turner is also not exactly a fucking slouch in the vocal department, lending his patented monastic chants and feral roars to the band’s stomp n’ burn riffola and death-defying d-beats. Birthed kicking, screaming and drenched in smelly amniotic slime, Split Cranium is the result of a recording session that promptly reversed course. Lehtisalo and Kröger had spent a few days unfurling some artsy-fartsy free-noise-rock improvisations before deciding to just get their fucking riff on. Circle had recently joined ISIS on the latter’s final European tour, during which Lehtisalo and Turner had discussed forming an unstoppable Scandi-American justice league of maximum musical proportions. Right after his improv session went punk, Lehtisalo heard that clicking sound that everyone always references when they say dumb shit like “It just clicked.” The token American was drafted, post-haste. Koskinen was simultaneously hauled in from NWOFHM killers Steel Mammoth. Left brains were promptly separated from right brains. Split Cranium were ready to, uh, split craniums. First head on the list? YOURS.

NEW RELEASES FOR 20th MARCH 2012

SHERIFF — Sheriff

FORMAT - CD LABEL - Rock Candy UPC - 827565058860 CATALOG # CANDY126CD LIST PRICE - $20.99 Initially issued in 1982, Sheriff’s debut album failed to ignite the public’s consciousness. Sure, it was a fine record with all the accoutrements expected of such work but the bands appeal was severely dented by inadequate promotion and a crowded market place. Amazingly, in 1989 DJ started spinning the power Ballad ‘When I’m With You’, a song that quickly gained momentum at virtually every radio station resulting in a US #1 hit single. This was a unique and totally overwhelming event and one that made everyone reassess the Sheriff album in an entirely new light. Pompous and grandiose, Sheriff’s style is perfectly in alignment with all the great AOR bands of the early 80s, offering up huge hooks, ripping guitar work and killer keyboard arrangements. The icing on the cake, however, is Freddy Curci’s amazing vocals, a man blessed with a range that evokes the great-est work of Freddie Mercury and Steve Perry. Hear it at all costs.

Special Limited Deluxe Collector’s Edition / Fully Remastered Sound shaped from 24 BIT digital tech-nology/ 7 Bonus Tracks/ Classic Canadian AOR/ 16 page full colour booklet – 4,000 word essay, en-hanced artwork, memorabilia, rare photos and involvement from the band.

MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE —The Ballad Of Genesis & Lady Jaye

FORMAT - CD LABEL - Sweet Nothing UPC - 5055300333421 CATALOG # SNCD055 LIST PRICE - $17.99 Music soundtrack to the intimate, affecting portrait of the life and work of ground-breaking performance artist and music pioneer Genesis P-Orridge (Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV) and his other half and collaborator, Lady Jaye, centred around the daring sexual transformations the pair underwent for their “Pandrogyne” project. Featuring music by Psychic TV, Thee Majesty and his other collaborations. Defying artistic boundaries, Genesis has redefined his art as a challenge to the limits of biology. In 2000, Genesis began a series of surgeries in order to more closely resemble his love, Lady Jaye (née Jacqueline Breyer), who remained his other half and artistic partner for nearly 15 years. It was the ultimate act of devotion, and Genesis’s most risky, ambitious, and subversive performance to date: he became a she in a triumphant act of artistic self-expression. Genesis called this project “Creating the Pandrogyne”—an attempt to deconstruct two individual identities through the creation of an indivisible third. This is a love story, and a portrait of two lives that illustrate the transformative powers of both love and art. Marie Losier brings to us the most intimate details of Genesis’s extraordinary, uncanny world. In warm and intimate images captured handheld, Losier crafts a labyrinthine mise-en-scene of interviews, home movies, and performance footage. The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye documents a truly new brand of Romantic consciousness.

NEDRY - In A Dim Light

FORMAT - CD/LP LABEL - Monotreme Records UPC - CD: 5065002002297 LP: 5065002002303 CATALOG # - CD: Mono-65CD LP: Mono-65VNL LIST PRICE CD: $16.99 LP: $27.99 Eagerly anticipated second album by hotly tipped genre-pushing trio. Nedry are a trio by way of London, Osaka and Bristol whose distillation of advanced rhythmic structures, low frequencies and raw human tones stand uniquely at a fascinating sonic crux of leftfield, club and indie juncture. British bass music clings to few modern regulations. As grey areas become inviting, zones of conflict are transformed into fertile new ground. Nedry are dictating a path that recognizes no genre, no structures, no rules. Ripping progressive dance culture out of the bedroom producers’ smoke stained confines and planting it resolutely on the live stage, Matt and Chris utilize MPC, laptops, guitars and synths to create a deep, thoughtful musical space. Nedry are dissolving the distance between this cutting edge and hungry audience. Splicing a band aesthetic with the ‘heads down and thumbs up’ bass craft of the UK, they gift the faceless revolution of dark music an inviting visage within which we can all dwell. As comfortable on the dancefloor of London clubs like The Boiler Room or FWD>> nights as they are onstage at The Great Escape or Barcelona’s Sonar electronic showcase – Nedry are the hypnotic, tender and evolving exponent of the delightful mutation that we face each day in Britain’s refreshingly wobbly musical culture. The album is available on CD format and also on a limited pressing of 180 gm vinyl (300 copies white and 200 copies black) which comes with a free copy of the album CD and 12” x 24” poster.

Caspian’s third attempt at sonic hegemony is Tertia – ten tracks that swirl, that twist and curl out of and into themselves, embracing the paradox of evoking the wildly specific by exploring the elusively abstract. There is a narrative, but it is spasmodic, fleeting moments, amidst songs like “La Cerva” and “Malacoda” where the instruments come together to an inextricable point, yet they seem to be uniting to deliver this: Things are about to fall apart. And then they do. With teeth gritted tighter than previous work, “The Raven” showcases the leaden fury that weighs on the cracking atlas-spine of the album. There is something controlled about the plummet, though. It is as if the fall is really a volatile casting down of the familiar until, in “Vienna,” its pieces can be quietly examined amidst the passing violence. Out of the scattered shards comes the closing “Sycamore.” Beginning with the most delicate drippings of melody since their debut’s “Last Rites,” guitar lines weave around each other, bleeding and fading into a mosaic of polyrhythms that, for all their tribal wiliness, ceases with a single snap, soldering the instruments into something fused, smooth, new. Tertia is, at it’s blood pumping core, an aural descent through darkness towards a sun-soaked radiance. There is a sweeping sense of storytelling happening here, and fans of the band will have no difficulty assigning their own highly personal meaning to the narrative that unfolds. And yet, Tertia is also simply sixty minutes of new music written by five guys, inspired by the relentless cycle of performing on the road and experiencing a world much larger than the small oceanside town they call home. An honest reaction to life experience is being attempted, and it’s taking form in a gloaming full of guitar flurries, bass throbs and pulsating, steady percussion. Since forming in 2004 as a four-piece with no aspirations other than to create music they could collectively appreciate, the band have added a third guitarist, whose weighty presence makes its recording debut here. After playing their first show in their hometown of Beverly, Mass. five years ago, the band have been in a seemingly constant state of motion, bringing their sound well beyond borders they initially imagined, with a plan to add even more this fall. The rain of fists that was their debut EP, You Are The Conductor, bled into the distinctivebut-circular tone poems of their first full-length, The Four Trees. Now, Tertia. One word meaning ‘three’ – the sum is merely an echo of its parts, the parts always aching—or, at least trying—to be one. - Press campaign through Solid PR (Torche, Thursday, Cave In, Boris) - First pressing of 1,300 copies sold out in 2010, been in high demand ever since - Altered artwork/packaging from original pressing - Band is currently in the studio recording the follow up album with producer Matt Bayles (Pearl Jam, Mastodon, Isis, Botch) - Comes hot on the heels of the bands first official live album release (also available via Redeye, “Live at Old South Church”, LP-Sheath-034) - Band recently featured on Decibel Magazine’s website, as well as CMJ, The Boston Globe, Boston Weekly Dig, and many more! - Band just inked a booking deal with The Agency Group for full tours worldwide in 2012 and on! For more than 30 years, Jerry Joseph has been strapping on a guitar and chasing down truth, understanding and soul with a tenacity and resonant skill that mark him as a hard charging kindred spirit to Joe Strummer, Warren Zevon and Patti Smith. While not a household name or critic’s darling, Joseph is the archetypal musician’s musician, something resoundingly clear on his sweeping new double album, Happy Book. Captured with muscle and blood by Joseph’s longtime trio The Jackmormons, this latest chapter in his long, strange journey flows like glowing quicksilver through the modern psyche. Happy Book presents The Jackmormons at their most diverse and confident, a record with a wide swing that dexterously moves from whisper closeness to Technicolor expansiveness. Many of the songs on Happy Book were written in Mexico right after Joseph’s father passed away but then left wide-open so the band could be part of the writing process, producing an emotional and sonic wallop fueled by the tightest, tastiest playing Joseph (guitar, lead vocals), JR Ruppel (bass, backing vocals) and Steve Drizos (drums, backing vocals) have ever captured in the studio.

With its contagious “joie de vivre” and its vibrant music, this band of six exceptional multi-instrumentalists has created an original and dazzling repertoire that reflects the colourful influences of Montreal’s cultural mosaic. Conceived in the hallways of the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal on a sunny day in 1999, Sagapool is giving birth to his fourth album. On the menu: guitar, accordion, violin, double bass, clarinet, piano, various tools and sandpaper. Sagapool is a forum for quivering ideas, somewhere between the Nu-Jazz and World Music, with a cinematographic music ambiance. An original album recorded in SaintElie-de-Caxton (Quebec, Canada) and produced by director Jeannot Bournival. Since 1999, Sagapool has played over 300 times in Canada, with 4 major performances at the Montreal International Jazz Festival. Launched in 2008, the previous album named Épisode Trois was warmly received by the public and the critics. It even reached the Top 10 List of Montreal CD sales. That same year, the band won the award for the Best Instrumental Group of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards.

BiOGRAPHY Four decades in the making, the Roy Sludge debut, Too Drunk to Truck is the roots record you’ve been waiting for. Plain and simple, Roy Sludge is the real deal. The self-proclaimed “reigning King of the $50 bucks and a burger" circuit has been entertaining Boston music fans for the last three decades. He is a prolific and well respected songwriter and multi-instrumentalist – a musician’s musician – blessed with a unique and unusually low baritone voice and a biting sense of humor. Too Drunk To Truck (out March 20th on DeeVeeUs records), is a 16-song classic sounding country record, steeped in truck driving and drinking songs that whips by in just under forty minutes. “I’ve been playing drinking and truck driving songs for many years now, so I thought I’d merge the two. This is not advocating drinking and truck driving simultaneously, it’s that the guy in the song is too drunk to drive his truck…get it? If you have to explain it, it loses the punch line.” The record was cut live at Q Division Studios in Somerville, MA over the course of just a few days featuring Duke Levine (Peter Wolf, Mary Chapin Carpenter) on guitar, Jim Haggerty (Wanda Jackson) on Upright Bass, and special guest Kevin Barry (Ray LaMontagne) on Lap Steel. It features Sludge originals and eight fairly obscure covers ranging from Roy Rogers, The Gun Club, and Johnny Cash which sound as if they were penned by Sludge himself. “I’ve written hundreds of “roots” songs, recorded demos, then realized I’d aped another song verbatum. Over the years, I’ve decided ‘Screw It’ – there are only really fifty songs ever written anyway – you can’t help but rip off twenty-five of them,” says Roy.

PRESS

“His voice drops so low, you wonder whether Johnny Cash could catch it.” – The Boston Phoenix “Roy’s whiskey & cigarette seasoned voice is pure country pleasure to the ears.” –Del Villarreal

WHISPERTOWN // PARALLEL LA-based WHISPERTOWN is the latest iteration of the unique vision of Morgan Nagler (songwriter, lead vocals, guitar). What was once The Whispertown 2000 has morphed into a less structured version of itself, with Nagler’s unmistakable vocals leading a revolving cast of musicians and artists. As The Whispertown 2000, Nagler and company garnered support slots for Jenny Lewis, The Breeders, Rilo Kiley, Bright Eyes, She & Him, The Elected, Azure Ray, Maria Taylor and many more. The band soon caught the attention of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, inspiring the first signing to their own Acony Records. Shortly thereafter, the band released 2008’s Swim, their debut release from Acony, comprised of classic songwriting and harmonious folk-pop. WHISPERTOWN’s sophomore release on Acony Records, Parallel, sticks to Nagler’s earth grounded wisdoms while taking a turn toward a new form of lo-fi electronica. Parallel moves easily through rock gems like “Blood From Wine” and “State Of Mind” with lyrical prowess, only to be punctuated perfectly by stark dance tracks such as “Open The Other Eye.” Produced, recorded and mixed by Andy LeMaster (Bright Eyes), Co-Produced by Jake Bellows (Neva Dinova), and Executive Produced by David Rawlings, the stars have aligned here. This is classic music for the people.

World Tour Believe (EP) Available via Cascine on 12” vinyl, March 20

Undoubtedly one of Cascine’s most anticipated releases of 2012 is the Believe EP by World Tour – a bold, thoughtful and imaginative contribution to pop music. Another new entry is “R.L. Burnside,” a true story of a night Drozdowski spent with the musical mentor who inspired him to found the band 10 years ago performed as an electric country blues. And there’s “Delta Train,” a ghost story set to a riveting Mississippi stomp. Drozdowski has been on the American blues scene for 30 years. His writing has appeared in Rolling Stone, Guitar World, Musician and dozens of other publications. He has also consulted on film projects including 2003’s “Martin Scorsese Presents: The Blues” PBS-TV series. “Bhiman's songs would be remarkable from anybody: He's a penetrating melodist as well as an accomplished guitarist and a striking singer.” -Bob Christgau, NPR All Things Considered Bhi Bhiman is an American original, and yet he seems transported from an era when songs were more important than the pretty faces that delivered them. His rich, bellowing tenor can soothe or explode at a moment’s notice. His lived-in, knowing delivery belies his years. His songwriting, too, is quick to captivate. Bhi’s mix of humor and deep empathy puts him in the company of distinguished (and much older) lifelong songsmiths like John Prine, Nick Lowe and Randy Newman. And Bhiman’s technical, emotive guitar playing rises to the challenge that his striking voice presents. It’s fitting, then, that there truly is—as far as anyone can tell—only one Bhi Bhiman. His parents, emigrants from Sri Lanka, named the songwriter after Bhima, a central character in an ancient Indian text called The Mahabharata. But Bhiman’s own American experience was markedly less exotic than his name would imply—he came of age in the ‘90s in St. Louis, reared on Soundgarden and Nirvana, and later relocated to the Bay Area, where he lives today. His forthcoming album, BHIMAN, was recorded at John Vanderslice’s famed analog studio, Tiny Telephone. He completed the album with producer Sam Kassirer (Josh Ritter, Langhorne Slim) at The Great North Sound Society; an 18th century farmhouse in Parsonsfield, ME. Together, they created a deep, layered record that is urgent enough to grab new listeners and deep enough to keep them coming back to hear the subtle, soulful shifts in both instrumentation and that powerful human voice.
