URGE OVERKILL
ROCK&ROLL SUBMARINE STREET DATE: 05-10-11
THE INSATIABLE ROCK MACHINE THAT IS URGE OVERKILL RETURNS with their first release in 16 years — all aboard the Rock&Roll Submarine! Almost two decades since Exit the Dragon (Geffen) and their Pulp Fiction hit cover of “Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon,” founding members Nash Kato and Eddie Roeser have reformed the band that sold over 2.5 million albums and epitomized rock star personality in the early 90s with their celebrated releases on Chicago’s Touch & Go Records. Joined by former Gaza Strippers guitarist Hadji Hodgkiss on bass and Cherry Valence’s Bonn Quast on drums, the Chicago band released the first song off the new album, “Effigy,” in the fall of 2010 to great respsonse from critics and fans alike. With the energy of past albums’ fusion of arena rock and punk coupled with the evolution of Kato and Roeser’s songwriting over the years, Rock&Roll Submarine is set to deliver its cargo of a new breed of UO rock torpedos to fans hungry for new material.

In a span of about three years in the mid‐‘90s, Chicago rockers Urge Overkill dropped a hotly‐tipped major label debut, 1993’s Saturation; released a wildly popular cover of Neil Dimaond’s “Girl You’ll Be a Woman Soon” on one of the decades most beloved soundtrack, Pulp Fiction; then, on the verge of breakout success, flamed out and broke up. Now, fifteen years after their last album, they’re back with a brand new album. ‐Peter Gaston for SPIN.com

GREG BROWN FREAK FLAG
NATIONAL release date: CD/lp: 05.10.2010 Greg Brown, accomplished songwriter, co-founder of the influential indie roots label Red House and former musical director for Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion radio program, is a prolific songwriter…and it’s a good thing. As the result of a fateful lighting strike on the studio where he was working, Brown lost the recordings that were to comprise his next album. For most artists, losing that much material would have been a creatively scarring and demoralizing experience. For Greg, it was just an excuse to turn inward once again, and write more songs. Of the songs that came to comprise his 24th album Freak Flag, the title track is all that remains of that ill-fated lost original album. Greg wrote ten new songs, moving on to record them at Memphis,Tennessee’s legendary Ardent Studios. This time there were no storms, but creative lightning did strike again, resulting in what many have called Greg’s best album. Like a jagged stone worked by ocean waves, Brown’s signature rough hewn-yet-velvet-smooth baritone is in fine form on Freak Flag. Produced by Bo Ramsey, the album also includes a cover of Brown’s wife Iris Dement’s “Let the Mystery Be” and Brown’s daughter Pieta’s song “Remember the Sun.” Key Facts: • 24th Studio Album from one of traditional folk's most prolific songwriters • Includes a cover of Brown’s wife Iris Dement’s “Let the Mystery Be” and Brown’s daughter Pieta’s song “Remember the Sun.” • Co-founder of influential indie roots label Red House and former musical director for A Prairie Home Companion Retail: We will be targeting key markets across the country. Marketing funds are available for key indies and regional chain programs. In-store play copies, promo items, and posters are available, as well as video widgets and banners to place on retail websites and eblasts: contact your sales rep or mike@yeproc.com. RADIO: We will service Americana, AAA non-comercial and key college stations with record digitally and will service select targets with physical product, specifically tour markets. The department is currently pitching key national outlets, i.e. e-town, World Café, Woodsongs, Mountain Stage, KEXP for live performance opportunity in addition to airplay where applicable. The campaign commences by soliciting stations with lead-off single and title track “Freak Flag” for blog/site promotion. PRESS: The first PR went out to a great response. Greg has many fans in the press, gleaning solid interest from Assoc. Press, ACL and more. Servicing the interested parties with physical CDs and a steady stream of assets on his many musician/actor fans are a few ways we plan to reinvigorate awareness of Greg’s talent and output. We expect the covers with daughter Pieta and wife Iris Dement to prove invaluable tools in expanding his listenership. Online Marketing: Utilizing the label’s social media channels via Twitter, Facebook and MySpace, we will promote album news, pre-order, press and release information to its followers and monitor for fan conversation and questions. Yep Roc will also work to assume control of the Greg Brown Facebook account, leverage his active Yahoo! Groups site, and examine the value of creating other venues such as YouTube for music sharing and consumption. These social media efforts will also coordinate with promotional eblasts, publicity and retail promotions. Sloan
The Double Cross
NATIONAL release date: CD/LP: 5.10.2011 Following their most critically-acclaimed albums to date, - SPIN called Never Hear the End of It, “the best British Invasion best-of you’ve never heard,” and Pitchfork called Parallel Play “almost flawless” - Canadian pop iconoclasts Sloan are ready to celebrate. Their recent albums would be reason enough but 2011 marks the twentieth anniversary of the band, and how better to honor such an occasion than a brand new album prolific with power pop gems? Sloan delivers just that with their 10th album The Double Cross, a titular shout-out to the band’s 20th (or XX) anniversary. The album kicks off as awesome as universal healthcare with “Follow the Leader” and the surefire sync license riffage of “Unkind.” In addition to releasing one of their best albums to date, the band will be celebrating all year long with special shows, an exclusive one-of-a-kind album artwork series and much more. So raise your glasses to Jay, Patrick, Chris, Andrew and 20 years of Sloan. Here’s to 20 more!
Highlights: • This is the band’s 20th Anniversary and 10th album! • Sloan are the kings of power-pop in Canada. They have influenced more bands than most can count. • Never Hear the End of It received critical acclaim, being favorably compared to The Beatles’ Abbey Road by the Wall Street Journal and with SPIN bestowing it with four stars and lauding it as, “the best British Invasion best-of you’ve never heard.” Parallel Play followed strong soon after garnering praise from Pitchfork: “almost flawless,” and All Music Guide” .“ Retail: We will be doing targeted marketing across the nation for this release. The band will be available for in-stores while on the road and there will be in-store play copies and posters are available, as well as video widgets and banners to place on retail websites and eblasts. Please contact your sales rep or mike@yeproc.com to receive. PRESS: A press release announcing the album went out and has already gotten an overwhelmingly positive response. We will be following up with a trailer about the album and a tour announcement, which will keep the story going. The pitch will revolve around the band’s anniversary and their steady, prolific output of 10 albums in that span. radio: We will be working with Pirate! Promotions for CMJ radio. We will be leading with “Unkind,” sending it out for tastemaker stations early to post on their blogs/podcasts and put into rotation, then do a full servicing of the album closer to streetdate, with an add date 2 weeks before streetdate. Tour: Sloan will be touring in June, doing festivals throughout the summer in Canada and the US, and then doing a follow up tour in the fall. VIDEO: We will have a lot of video content to work with to promote The Double Cross. There will be an album trailer to spread virally, in addition to a video of interview footage taken of bands that have been influenced by Sloan. Also, the band has created 20 videos (one for each year they have been a band) that tell their history and how their sound has developed over the years. We will be putting these videos out one day at a time leading up to street date. In addition to this viral content, we will also have an official music video for “Unkind,” the lead single off of The Double Cross. Jimmie Dale Gilmore with The Wronglers Heirloom Music STREET DATE: May 10, 2011 The Wronglers are an amateur string band (banjo, twin fiddles, mandolin, guitar, bass) led by Warren Hellman, better known as the benefactor of the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in San Francisco, a free festival now in its 11th year. They formed in 2006 and over the years they have played around the Bay Area, opening for the likes of Steve Earle and Gillian Welch, as well as nationally at festivals such as South by Southwest, Old Settler’s, Strawberry and The Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis. Jimmie Dale Gilmore of Lubbock, TX, whose penchant for spiritual themes and cosmic considerations has led to descriptions of his lyrics as “West Texastentialism” released his first album of many in 1988. His heartfelt singing style, with its masterfully understated phrasing, is known in some circles as “sagebrush soul,” a genre that he is credited with creating. In addition to his long, distinguished solo career, with its three Grammy nominations, Gilmore is a longtime member of The Flatlanders which also features fellow Lubbock-ites Joe Ely and Butch Hancock. For some time Gilmore has been wanting to go back to a time before country music got really commercialized and he saw his opportunity with The Wronglers. He and Hellman became friends through HSB and they have joined forces to make “Heirloom Music”, an album of early twentieth century, folk-rooted country music featuring material from the likes Charlie Poole, the Carter Family, Bill Monroe, Bob Wills and the Delmore Brothers. MARKETING: • The first release from Jimmie Dale Gilmore since his grammy nominated Come on Back (2005). • Beautiful collectors edition, one-of-a-kind packaging with full XX page hardbound booklet • Fully Radio serviced on Triple A, Non-Commerical (NPR), and Americana stations nationwide • National television and radio program appearances (i.e. A Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage, E-town, etc.) • National Media and Tour Support • Jimmie Dale’s interview about the CD with Terry Gross of NPR’s “Fresh Air” will be rebroadcast in May around release time. JESU
STREET DATE: 05.10.11
According to Webster’s dictionary ‘ascension’ is the moving to a higher or more powerful position. As a title for Jesu’s newest album, it’s first traditional album since 2007, it’s a perfect description. Jesu is Justin Broadrick and he has been on this path for many years now. ‘Ascension’ may be another way station on this journey or it may be a peak but it is certainly is part of a body of work that is rising with much power and majesty. The layers of atmospheric guitars and keyboards on the ten tracks on ‘Ascension’ build relentlessly atop each other creating a huge structure that seems to float or glide more like a weather pattern than a piece of music. As it moves overhead you are enveloped in a new world of sonic pleasure where the edges are soft and sustained but the weight is ever present. However through this cloak of sound great beams of sunlight occasionally break, lighting the clouds in spectacular colors. All is not gray in this world. Justin Broadrick first emerged as a force in music as part of the band Napalm Death in the mid eighties. He then formed Godflesh which cemented his place in a genre which is variously known as extreme, grindcore or just new metal. There are however, many arrows in Justin Broadrick’s quiver. Over the last twenty years he has maintained a series of projects ranging in musical style from punk to industrial to the melodic atmospherics of his current band, Jesu. This ability to step outside the confines of musical convention sets him apart creatively from other writer musicians who have been working in his field over this period. Despite, or perhaps because of this stylistic diversity he has attracted an obsessively loyal fanbase and a reliably positive response from critics. The question is always, How does he sound so light while staying so heavy? Jesu’s output has been spasmodic but of a uniform high quality. All instruments are played by Justin Broadrick and apart from the occasionally guest vocalist ( Jarboe from The Swans) he handles all vocals. Two traditional sequenced albums , ‘Jesu’ in 2004, and ‘Conqueror’ in 2007 plus an album length song, ‘Infinity’, in July 2009 have been intertwined with a number of EPs. In 2008 Jesu issued one EP, ‘Why Are We Not Perfect?’ and contributed to two more split EPs with other bands while an EP called ‘Opiate Sun’ came out on Caldo Verde in Oct 2009.

EMA Fans of guitar noise will have crossed paths with EMA as the scorching guitarist in legendary folk/noise outfit Amps For Christ before forming the genre-defying cult duo Gowns with Ezra Buchla, which Pitchfork called “one of the most heart-stoppingly great live bands on earth” and the Village Voice spluttered succinctly upon seeing them live: “Holy fucking fuck!”. Their 2007 album Red State was an electronic folk and feedback drenched masterpiece that left critics both raving and bewildered. It sadly proved to be their last. The upside is that that musical crossroads lead to the unveiling of EMA who has since opened for Throbbing Gristle on their last US tour. GENRE : POP/ROCK FILE UNDER: “S” Sea and Cake, The In January of this year Sam Prekop, Archer Prewitt, John McEntire, and Eric Claridge reconvened at Chicago’s Soma Electronic Music Studios to record their latest release The Moonlight Butterfly. This thirty three minute mini-album finds the band deliverying much more long form and cinematic pieces. The new songs lean upon the band’s more experimental tendencies, taking time to stretch the forms and in someways the new material relates to the way the band re-interpretes some of their songs live. With the band making a shorter than usual record they were allowed to take more chances and ended up with a release that leans a bit more towards the instrumental. Rather than having the vocals be the sole focal point the shifts in emphasis to other instruments facilitated a more open approach. The song “Weekend” from Car Alarm was kind of an unwitting blueprint for some of the new material. Especially the new song “Inn Keeping” where a synthesizer pattern became the armature for the song, a constant to play with and against. “Inn Keeping” is also quite a breakthrough for the band, sounding unlike anything they have done before and breaking the 10 minute mark. Hot on the heels of a month long nationwide tour and a split 7” with Broken Social Scene, The Sea and Cake are in the midst of one of their most productive periods in their nearly 20 year history. The band plan to tour throughout the year and will soon begin work on a full album to follow The Moonlight Butterfly.

GENRE : BLACK METAL/EXPERIMENTAL FILE UNDER: “L” Liturgy Brooklyn based Liturgy is Hunter Hunt Hendrix, Greg Fox, Tyler Dusenbury, and Bernard Gann. Aesthethica, their second album and third release, shows the band exploring, in greater depth, themes initially touched on by their critically acclaimed debut album, Renihilation. The band used every instrument, literal or figurative, to produce meaning and intensity, disregarding the genre boundaries of black metal, hardcore and experimental music. On Renihilation, Liturgy made use of simple song structures, and concentrated on sustaining a blindingly high intensity level from start to finish. Aesthethica, a more controlled and polyvalent effort, finds the band operating at multiple levels and using more varied forms. The music is both elaborately crafted and chaotically performed. Songs often begin in the form of a simple chant or hypnotic abstraction, then evolve into something dense and complex. A constant sensitivity to the states of attention that different musical patterns activate and foster, yields a paradoxical result: the more complex the music, the simpler the message. Cycling through the fundamental modes of being: stasis, chaos, repetition and entelechy, Aesthethica is a metaphorical exercise in affirmation. The record is a unified whole. A major concern, sonically and lyrically, is the question of what it is to be meaningful, and how intensity relates to emotion or affect. Many of the songs activate and manipulate cliches relating to heroism, tragedy, hope, and so on by connecting black metal techniques to the spirit of film score writing (Vangelis, Badalamenti) and post-Romanticism (Scriabin, Sibelius). “High Gold” presents a vision of apocalypse, “Harmonia” presents a judgment on the meaning of life, and so on. The resulting collection of songs, at once, embodies and transcends these tropes. The music is supersaturated with lofty melodies and lyrics, bursting with frenzied execution, and builds to a boiling point of chaos, distorting all meaning and distilling to reveal the raw core of pure sonic joy. Liturgy surrounds these fractured islands of meaning with a sea of a-signifying ritual repetition and sound (Branca, Sleep, Lightning Bolt). Tear at the seams of the straitjacket of ordinary life, release the energy from the field of potentiality that it binds, enter the realm of the good and the beautiful, so commands Aesthethica. Highly technical musicianship, poetico-mystical gesturing, and a minimal directness; all singular elements, whose interactions and reactions are contained in and bursting from a black metal framework. Revelatory contrasts presented in an intensely physical performance whose energy is palpable and whose abatement is as illuminating as its arrival.

GENRE : AVANT ELECTRONIC/AMBIENT FILE UNDER: “M” Mountains Mountains is Brendon Anderegg and Koen Holtkamp, two sonic explorers whose long history, shared philosophies, and love of sculpting sound, has resulted in some of the most densely layered and blissful music crafted in recent memory. The duo is known for obscuring the boundaries between acoustic instrumentation and electronics. Their debut Thrill Jockey release Choral was universally critically acclaimed, has nearly sold through three LP pressings, and ended up being one of the label’s best selling releases of 2009, a remarkable achievement. Air Museum blurs the lines between acoustic and electronic music even more without sacrificing melody or the delicacy of their sound. It is an album of firsts. It was the first album that the acoustic instruments were not processed via a computer. Instead, the processing of the instrumentation (acoustic and electric guitar, cello, accordion, piano, bass etc.) was done using a variety of pedals, modular synths, and other analog techniques. While acoustic instruments were used extensively, the album manifests itself sonically as their most “electronic” record yet. Air Museum is also their first record that was made in a studio. Working in the studio expanded their possibilities, giving more room for experimentation. While much of the album was recorded in real time with minor editing, the band took the opportunity to utilize the studio as an instrument of sorts, investing a great amount of time in customizing their approach to post-production. Air Museum was recorded at Telescope Recording, in Brooklyn, New York, between December 2010 and January 2011, with the exception of “Blue Lanterns On East Oxford” which was recorded in Philadelphia in the spring of 2010 and “Live At The Triple Door”, an edit of a live performance that took place in Seattle at the 2009 Decibel Festival. Since returning from European and American tours for Choral, Mountains has been concentrating on the assembly of new systems to create and perform without the use of a computer. Air Museum is the first result of these efforts. It is less reliant on long linear crescendos, focusing more on rhythmic interplay and dynamic changes. Like their previous work it retains the energy and the expansiveness born of improvisation. Mountains is also taking a new approach to their live performance, utilizing many of the techniques they developed while working on Air Museum. For their new live set, Mountains has created a patch that will enable their electronics to sync up at various times, so while the musicians react to one another musically, given the right parameters, the machines can react to one another as well. Through their multi-textural and subtly shifting approach, Mountains has garnered much praise from audiences and critics alike.

Tiago Sousa
Walden Pond’s Monk Walden Pond’s Monk is the brand new album from Portuguese musician and composer Tiago Sousa. Following the limited vinyl-only album Insónia released in 2009 on German label Humming Conch, Walden Pond’s Monk is the first album from Sousa released worldwide on both CD and LP formats. Walden Pond’s Monk is a piece that was composed and heavily influenced by the idealism and revolutionary spirit of Henry David Thoreau. The album is a natural evolution of the aesthetics already present in the previous album Insónia, while at the same time it reveals the maturity of a composer who consistently challenges himself.

LP version is limited to 500 copies pressed on high quality virgin vinyl at RTI and includes free download coupon Walden Pond’s Monk will appeal to fans of Nils Frahm, Peter Broadrick, Rachels, Max Richter, Ólafur Arnalds, or Deaf Center “with Insónia, Tiago Sousa cements his place as one of the most distinct voices to emerge out of the current wellspring of piano driven minimalism” - The Silent Ballet “Insónia draws upon his accumulated knowledge of classical, experimental and popular forms, all blended into a single suite of compositions…The title track in particular is just exceptionally beautiful, a piano solo that might be the most accomplished, well-made piece of its kind since Gonzales turned his hand to the format five years ago. You can hear the influence of Satie, or even Chopin’s Nocturnes at work here, and Sousa’s poised, expressive performance is quite magical. Insonia feels more modern, and somehow, more mature than the main thread of classical-styled records that have come our way this year.” - Boomkat
On this album, Tiago Sousa maintains the same intuitive and spontaneous approach to the piano and remains convincingly impermeable to the normative formalisms of genre and academism. With Ricardo Ribeiro (clarinet) and Baltazar Molina (percussion), Sousa builds a piece in a continuous momentum, anchored on impressionist melodies of disarming simplicity and interrupted by a stormy improvisation. During the thirty two minutes of Walden Pond’s Monk, Tiago Sousa nourishes a romantic narrative based upon the essential ideas that Thoreau documented in works like Walden or Civil Disobedience: the profound respect for freedom and for the infinite expression of the possibilities of men. An unexpected encounter that outdoes the limits of an album and becomes roundly an artistic and personal manifest for Tiago Sousa. Walden Pond’s Monk stands out not only because of the mature composition work, but also for the natural but yet surprising confluence between the aesthetics of the composer and the ideological concepts that he absorbed from Thoreau. Tiago Sousa was initially known as the founder of Portuguese netlabel Merzbau, but in the last few years has been a very active solo artist. Always preferring the intuitive approach to music and stepping aside from the frontiers of genre and formal academism, he has become one of the most promising names in the Portuguese musical scene. Before his work with piano, Tiago founded the band Goodbye Toulouse and was part of the collectives Jesus, the Misunderstood, Sapien Sapiens and Macadame. He is also one of the Barreiro-based artists that belong to a generation that created and produced festivals like Out.fest and Barreiro Outras Músicas. In 2006, the piano became the gravitational center of his music with the release of Crepúsculo. It was followed by Noite/Nuit, a split released with SRX in 2007 on Merzbau. In 2008, Tiago released The Western Lands, a challenging record named after the book by William S. Burroughs, on the German label Resting Bell. The Western Lands gave him his first press reviews, a tour throughout Europe and precious moments on stage with Shannon Wright, Vic Chesnutt and Paul Metzger. 2009 saw the release of his third LP Insónia on Berlin’s Humming Conch label. The album was met with critical praise and was on many of the year’s best Portuguese lists. Simultaneously, he began a new cycle of concerts performing at the Lisbon venues Teatro Maria Matos and Galeria Zé dos Bois, as well as Festival Rescaldo and, once again, to Berlin, Brussels, and Paris. 2011 will see Tiago touring and performing in support of the new album Walden Pond’s Monk.

Lee Perry aka Scratch, The Upsetter, The Super Ape, Pipecock Jackson and on …. Genius, Madman, Visionary, Lunatic, Shaman? Probably guilty of all as charged. Rise Again The title should speak for itself. A clear and direct collaborative projection that transforms pop music production into an art form all it's own. Like an ageless tribe of Lazarus, Lee “Scratch” Perry just keeps coming back. This time out, the Upsetter celebrates his 75th year on planet Earth with the release of Rise Again—a crucial set of eleven all-new songs, mixed and produced by Bill Laswell and featuring vocals by TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe, Ethiopian chanteuse Gigi Shibabaw and Jamaican toaster Hawk(man). Rise Again is not just another echo-drenched, bass-heavy, psychedelic dub release, that Perry helped invent back in the early ’70s, but this record goes deeper into the Rasta mysticism (and you thought it was just about smoking herb) that provides the key to understanding Scratch’s trip. This is, after all, the same innovator who literally realigned the career paths of Bob Marley, The Clash and The Rolling Stones, so it only makes sense for him to continue pushing forward. Even more fitting that he should take the leap with Laswell, whose resumé as a radical-minded producer speaks for itself(but we’ll mention it anyhow); his studio forays with Herbie Hancock, George Clinton, Public Image Ltd, Iggy Pop, Yellowman, Sly & Robbie and Matisyahu (to name just a few)—as well as his late ’90s dub remixes of the Marley/Wailers and Miles Davis catalogs—still reverberate today like a vintage Echoplex. But don’t take our word for it ...

WARPCD199/WARPLP199
“The type of hyper-dance that makes you want to grow your hair out just to whip it around... indebted to roots reggae as much as it is to juke music and meteor showers” – FADER Nearly nine years ago Mark Pritchard and Steve Spacek began bonding over their shared passion for the seemingly disparate spheres of bubbling Detroit techno, soul and fierce Jamaican digital dancehall. By pure coincidence, the two found themselves living in Australia, and that connection was cemented by the forming of Africa Hitech, the moniker which represents both Steve and Mark’s love for all things progressive within music, whilst acknowledging that the roots of much of today’s popular music can be traced directly back to Africa. Their first full length project for Warp is titled 93 Million Miles. Pritchard had already begun to narrow the gaps between the pair’s beloved genres under his Harmonic 313 moniker and Spacek was eager to explore new directions in both his production and vocals after the disbandment of his eponymous band and the worldwide acclaim of his Dilla-asisted “Dollar” single. 93 Million Miles is an unflinchingly ambitious product of international globe-trotting that carves a new faultline into the rapidly expanding terrain of “bass music”…or whatever it’s being called this week. The first point of introduction for many will have been the Ini Kamoze-sampling behemoth “Out In The Street”, immediately championed by Flying Lotus, Untold, Toddla T, Benji B, Scratcha DVA and featured in “Wild Hundreds”, a documentary about Chicago’s underground Juke/Footwork dance community. A brilliant exercise in artful international data-splicing, “Out In The Street” combines the ghosts of 1980s Jamaica with the youth-culture explosion of juke. For many this ambitious cultural intake could spell disaster, but in the hands of Pritchard and Spacek it becomes a surprising, fulfilling journey aimed squarely at the dedicated listener rather than simply at the dancefloor. Given the duo’s breadth of experience and exquisite levels of taste and ability, it could go no other way.

LOVE INKS OVERVIEW: Love Inks' debut album ‘E.S.P.’ was conceived and recorded with strict, direct motives. No frills, tears through extravagant side roads, indulgent solos, certainly no jamming, and no extra instrumentation. The sounds captured within these 10 tracks are simply an electric guitar, a bass guitar, an old drum machine, at special moments a Moog Satellite and, most importantly, the simple yet poignant vocals of S herry LeBla nc . The combined sound is minimalist dream-pop; imbued with raw emotion, sexuality, and splashes of electronic For mats: CD / LP

the guitar and bass, Lo ve Inks found there is a way to drop it perfectly into the song, in between everything, so that the vocal can exist in its own world, floating independently above the song. For the lyrics, Sherry channels the intensity and love between Yoko Ono and John Lennon. The art of Ono, inherently Japanese, is concise and inspired John Lennon to follow suite: "Try shaving it all off and getting down to the nitty gritty-- that's what I always try to write. I'm not interested in describing a fucking tree. I'm interested in climbing it or being under it." Give it to them straight, with honesty. Sherry is also a firm believer in positivity. Her lyrics are never abusive or cynical. “We are a family, and in some ways stronger because we are always supportive. The album reflects a time and place for everyone in the band. A time to pear down to what is necessary, essential. Cut out complexity, and you'll find a deeper layer that is thicker and stronger. Like the human body, you'll eventually end up at a nerve; once it's hit, that's when

DESCRIPTIVE TEXT __________________________________________________________ There's very little for us, the assembled OXBOW, in consideration of past historical fact, that's created as great a sense of disturbance at best or feelings of careerist concern at the worst, as this, the creation of this record, the King Of The Jews. While those more professionally minded industry folks in our midst fret over the slumping that is sometimes an inevitable part of sophomore outings, this was really the last of our artistic concerns. Moving beyond the ill-intentioned and well-delivered suicide note that was our debut, Fuckfest, the struggle was not to create a record that was "crazier" than the first, there was no effort afoot to exceed the first's excess in a way that played off of our more "charming" elements and continue the sales cavalcade that failed to materialize in actual fact. No. The effort here was, despite diversion aplenty, to dig our knuckles deeply into what we were trying to say the first time but failed to deliver on, in our eyes, both musically and production-wise, and most certainly lyrically and graphically [which is to say, on a certain level, thematically]. Of course this is all just police blotter stuff. Concrete and organized detail that does not address at all the unspecified disasters hinted at in the lyrics. Lyrics that touch on my personal move from thinking that suicide was a workable solution to a much more practical understanding of life at hand that's remained today and that's that as much and as many problems as suicide might solve, there are still plenty of people who deserve to die more than I do. In the end? Homicide seemed a much better solution and one which I was probably much more functionally suited for. This record marks that very personal shift in me moving from feeling sorry for myself toward me feeling sorry for you, or more precisely: the not-so-comfortable transition from being a danger to self to being a danger to others. --Eugene S. Robinson

Jackie-O Motherfucker– Volume 1:Fig.5 & Liberation (Special Edition) FORMAT - 2CD LABEL - Fire Records UPC - 809236112095 CATALOG # - FIRECD120X LIST PRICE - $22.99 A special edition Jackie-O Motherfucker release of both Liberation and Fig.5 re-issues together in packaging especially designed by Alex Hornsby. Fig. 5 is slow and plodding like time itself. This work, again, simply has no precedents. Or rather, its precedents lie in the dusty anonymities of American musical history, instead of the proud and touted monuments of America’s cultural past. Listen to it once if you can. It is our secret national anthem. Following the critical success of their Road Cone debut Fig. 5 in 2000, Jackie-O Motherfucker released their seventh album, Liberation, in October 2001. This CD showcases the group's most experimental free-form side. The 12 musicians involved in these recordings stomp over any distinctions between rock, jazz, folk, or any other musical idiom for that matter. They jam. As hodgepodge, confused, and eclectic their blend may seem, they master it and make it exciting.
Wooden Wand —Circle FORMAT - 7” LABEL - Critical Heights UPC - 80923613019 CATALOG # - CRITTER01 LIST PRICE - $7.99 James Jackson Toth, known to the world as Wooden Wand, is a maverick, good-hearted troubadour whose blend of smoky Americana has been garnering plaudits for the last decade. Unafraid to mix psychedelic workouts with sweet and soulful country, his varied and prolific output has resulted in a wealth of lyrically rich songs; the kind whose lines stick in your head for a lifetime. Here he provides a wonderful rendition of Circle, where Tennessee sour mash replaces real ale to create an aching slow burn of a tune. This is the first release on new UK label Critical Heights.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC BAND— Translucent Fresnel (The Nan True’s Hole Tape 72/73 Live) FORMAT - DLP LABEL - Ozit UPC - 811702012327 CATALOG # - OZITDANDELIONLP8008 LIST PRICE - $38.99 180 gram vinyl gatefold sleeve. From the late 1960’s through to 1980 John Peel collected tapes of recordings of Captain Beefheart’s live shows particularly ones in the UK. During a tidy up at Nan True’s Hole in 2003 he discovered around six large reels of tape containing many of Beefheart’s live UK performances and he sent these on to Ozit Morpheus Records. Here is Volume 1 of material from the tapes. Like all Beefheart live tracks they are chaotic, erratic and yet charming. Because of the age of the material and sometimes crude recording techniques there is the odd glitch in the recordings but rather than try and digitally repair the sound you get it exactly as it came off the tapes, warts and all but full of Beefheartian energy. Volume 1 is songs mainly from the Clearspot era tour of the UK. “Captain Beefheart was driven in pursuit of his music to the borderline between imbalance and genius." John Peel
HOLLY GOLIGHTLY & DAN MELCHIOR– Desperate Little Town FORMAT - CD/DLP LABEL - Damaged Goods UPC - CD: 5020422033825 DLP: 5020422033818 CATALOG # - CD: DAMGOOD338CD DLP: DAMGOOD338LP LIST PRICE - CD: $15.99 DLP: $17.99 Reissue of a great lost album, a collaboration between Holly Golightly & Dan Melchior that was originally released on Sympathy For The Record Industry Records from California, it’s been out of print for around eight years and Holly & Dan thought it was about time we put that right. Recorded in London and Californian in 1999 with long time friend Bruce Brand on percussion this album features 10 tracks, some of which you’ll know if you’ve seen Holly play in the last decade like ‘Directly From My Heart’ & ‘Further On Up The Road’ but here they’re given very warm re-workings. If Dan Melchior is new to you then here’s a brief history. He was born in England, now based in the states. His first album was with Billy Childish (Devil In The Flesh), and he made another 15 or so plus loads of singles. His current combo is ‘Dan Melchior und Das Menace’ and he’s rather good.
Lesley Gore– Hits & Rarities 1964 – 1969 FORMAT - CD LABEL - Teensville UPC - 0793573031785 CATALOG # - TVAS1003CD LIST PRICE - $18.99 This is the first of a new series from “Teensville” called “Artist Spotlight” where we feature hits and rarities by artist(s) of the 60s. This package focuses mainly on Lesley Gore with tracks recorded between 1964 and 1969 but with 2 fantastic bonus tracks recorded in the 70s and 80s that have never been released. The major attraction of this package is the many first time to CD master mixes and also some very rare stereo mixes from the Mercury vaults. Amazingly, the collector can hear the chatter at the end of “Look of Love;” this is also the original single mix not issued on CD before. We also feature 2 of Lesley’s biggest hits “You Don’t Own Me” and “Judy’s Turn To Cry” in Italian (with more studio chatter.) This is a refreshing collection of 18 newly remastered Lesley Gore goodies with mostly rare stereo mixes never before issued on CD, which makes it a must for fans of 60’s pop, girl groups and of course, Lesley Gore.

CEREMONY Mexicans With Guns is back in the club, and he's not here to sell you roses. The bass luchadore sometimes known as Ernest Gonzales conjures mystic bass-bin beats for his debut Ceremony LP due May 10th on Innovative Leisure. It's his second proper release on the Highland Park set following 2010's outof-print Me Gusto EP for which notably The FADER & LA Times spilled ink. Those familiar with the masked man's previous efforts won't be surprised by his gritty, sleep-with-one-eye-open basslines and atmospheric swelter, but they may find themselves entranced as they diffuse over the space of 14 original tracks. Gonzales crafted the distinct sound of Mexicans With Guns as an outlet for exploring traditional Hispanic folk music as an electronic artist in the present; on Ceremony he effortlessly transposes the spiritual tradition of the past onto the rattling dance halls of the present.

The San Antonio, TX native cut his teeth producing remixes for Freddie Gibbs, Rainbow Arabia, CYNE, Faunts & Yppah and honing his live show headlining Low End Theory as well as on bills with Peanut Butter Wolf, Daedelus, Eliot Lipp, Mux Mool & Jogger. In addition to Me Gusto, he's released a split EP with Robot Koch, last year's Friends of Friends Vol 3. Now forCeremony, MwG shows the chops he's primed producing for others and also those he's sharpened playing for a room. He's invited a bevy of MCs & vocalists for his coming-out LP including Freddie Gibbs, Helado Negro, Chico Mann, Nocando, Zacky Force Funk & Sasha Perera of Jahcoozi. Each of these guests illuminate a different side of Gonzales' expanding repertoire. The "Opening Incantation" of no hay espacio, no hay tiempo cedes to "Jaguar" an early standout, its shoulder-slinking, midtempo grind stalking along a fierce low end. Freddie Gibbs picks up the mic on "Highway To Hell" and the brash Gary, IN rapper proves he wouldn't lose an ounce of his hustle south of the border. Staying decidedly dark is "Dame Lo;" dark enough, at least, to inspire the violent, boozy & occultish video The FADER called "the sickest we've seen in a minute." "Me Gusto" lightens the mood a stitch, with Antibalas' Chico Mann's swaying melody improbably fusing a track filled with 8-bit, lazer & nods to 80's funk & b. Finally, MwG dips into drones and loops, helping Savath y Savalas cohort Helado Negro, feel right at home on the disembodied "El Moreno." There is a sense that while Ceremony has finished, something larger has commenced... keep attuned to Mexicans With Guns in 2011 as he preps a 7" featuring Texas rap legend Bun B (joining Freddie Gibbs on an alternate to "Highway to Hell"), collaborates with Mexican raverton originator Toy Selectah as Gun Selectah, and tours behind a mask & alter.

LAURA VEIRS
The Triumphs and Travails of Orphan Mae Originally released in 2001, The Triumphs and Travails of Orphan Mae set Laura Veirs on a course for the next decade; the first of five albums recorded with producer Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, My Morning Jacket, Sufjan Stevens) that would culminate (in a circular fashion) with 2010’s July Flame. Veirs reflects on Orphan Mae, describing it as “Ten songs that I think really hold up over time. It has some surprises in it. It’s rooted in the folk tradition and it’s also experimental. July Flame was actually inspired by he Triumphs and Travails of Orphan Mae. We wanted to go back in time to capture that feeling of a very sparse and song-based album. You could play these songs with just a voice and guitar and it would come off okay. I think I strayed from that for a while.” If July Flame was return to form, it was also Laura Veirs’ most widely acclaimed and best selling album, on her own label no less. So in addition to the auspicious 10 year anniversary, it seems appropriate to reissue this ruby of a gem. “When I was started writing songs in this era I was really into the country blues writers Mississippi John Hurt and Elizabeth Cotten, and they continue to be inspirational to me. You can hear it in the foundations of this album, and later with a little more of my own flavor on July Flame.” Review "A fascinating glimpse of Veirs' nascent talent. Even this early on in her career, Veirs' slightly spooked voice conveys a strong sense of place, especially when singing about her beloved wilderness in the American Northwest. And in case you're wondering, no she doesn't vote Republican. Dubbed 'art country' by a local news paper, Veirs sounds a little like Suzanne Vega if she'd grown up in such a place. The two albums [Year of Meteors & Triumphs] share the same subtly inventive producer in Tucker Martine, string arrangements by Eyvind Kang and a generally sparse, largely acoustic ambience, occasionally illuminated with subtle electronica." - BBC Music

CASS McCOMBS WIT’S END Tracklist 1) County Line 2) The Lonely Doll 3) Buried Alive 4) Saturday Song 5) Memory’s Stain 6) Hermit’s Cave 7) Pleasant Shadow Song 8) A Knock Upon The Door Catalog Number DNO 296 Streetdate April 12th, 2011 File Under Rock/Pop “M” Format Cassette $9.99 Boxlot: 88 801390029646
Overview: Cass McCombs, singer-songwriter born in Northern California in 1977 and currently residing somewhere in that State, is set to release WIT’S END, his fifth-and-a-half album and his third for Domino, on April 12th. The album is the result of two years of recording in various homes and studios in California, New York, New Jersey and Chicago. WIT’S END was produced by Cass with Ariel Rechtshaid reuniting the duo that also created his previous album Catacombs. Sounds that conjure the colors purple and black, this is his darkest record to date. It seems he is going deeper into the mania of a man buried alive inside his self-made Catacombs, banging the stone walls, crying to be let out, and enjoying the quiet away from the outside world. However, he is not a man afraid of his own shadow, for in this environment of complete darkness, no shadows can be cast. This is a world of total Feeling. Here, words become a catalyst away from the slavery of arbitrary Thought and toward Feeling. Selling Points: -The cassette comes with a full color insert and a MP3 download card. - WIT’S END is the follow up to the critically acclaimed Catacombs - his biggest selling album so far. It has scanned 7500 plus, doubling his previous sales high water mark. And yes . . . that means five-and-a-half albums into his career his audience is growing. - The lead single, County Line, premiered in late January to overwhelming positive reviews from music tastemakers such as Pitchfork, the Fader, Stereogum, Filter, Gorilla vs Bear and more: http:// soundcloud.com/dominorecordco/cass-mccombs-county-line - Cass will be working on a video for County Line leading up to street date. - Full radio and press campaign around album release. - He will be playing the Domino SXSW showcase followed by a full US tour in late spring and early summer. More dates are scheduled for the fall. - He has done support dates for The Decemberists, Band of Horses, Andrew Bird, and Modest Mouse.
