Artist: Jamie Lidell Title: Compass 05.18.10

Overview

WARPCD192/WARPLP192

Jamie Lidell is a genuinely restless soul. He broke out of small-town England and has been a nomad ever since. His constant desire to progress—leaping and stumbling towards new discoveries—has defined his musical journey so far; and there’s no sign of it fading away. Dig into the discography and you’ll find underground techno, two albums of Super_Collider’s fondly recalled science-funk (with Cristian Vogel), and his magnificently wigged-out solo debut Muddlin Gear, followed by Multiply, a surprising, hook-stuffed, meticulously produced platter of deliciously uplifting soul and funk that won international adulation. Meanwhile, Jamie’s one-man shows were, quite literally, something else. By 2008, Jamie had become Jim—constructing a warm, invitingly plush bordello of funk, disco, soul and gospel. The accompanying tour saw him evolve from peerless sonic manipulator into a showman leading a blazingly talented four-piece across the world’s clubs, stadiums and TV studios. Yet, that sense of exploration that he craves was never far away. Now it’s 2010, and Jim has left the building. So Jamie returns with a new map for these territories. Undoubtedly, Compass is his most eclectic album yet. Songs shift, chop, change and mutate genres and forms before our very ears. It’s got funk in spades; the jaw-dropping power of the vocals is stronger than ever; it rocks, it pops, it’s sweet, angry, hard, soulful and soft, often within the span of a single track. It’s the restless album that finally matches the soul of its creator. Recorded in Los Angeles, New York and Canada, Jamie’s fellow travelers on Compass include Beck, Feist, Gonzales, Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear and Pat Sansone of Wilco. Musically and lyrically this is very much A Jamie Lidell Production—reflecting not only his exhilarating, diverse tastes, but also a year of change, love, longing and arrival at a new place. When he takes to the road in 2010, he’ll be bringing a band again, but stripping it back; keeping it lean. For both newcomers and initiates, this will be an experience. And no, he won’t stop.

The Sadies

Darker Circles NATIONAL release date: CD/lp: 05.14.2010

Darker Circles is the follow-up to The Sadies’ acclaimed last album Country Club (with John Doe) and sees guitarist brothers Dallas and Travis Good, drummer Mike Belitsky and bassist Sean Dean again pair with legendary Jayhawk and sought-after producer Gary Louris. Furthering the focused songwriting and recording aspirations reached on New Seasons, The Sadies bring their signature blend of country, psychedelic, rock and surf into rifle-scope focus on Darker Circles, further underscoring their reputations as musicians’ musicians. Always at the top of the list when discussing musical chops and live intensity, The Sadies are now more intent than ever on making their mark as songwriters. In one turn as heavy as a sledge, and on the other flitting across melodies with the ease of so many sparrows, The Sadies prove once again that denying them now is simply prolonging your conversion. So go on, pull up that screeching wooden chair that bows with your weight. Slide it up next to the turntable and drop the needle, The Sadies are a sure thing….tomorrow isn’t.

Retail: The success of Country Club, their recent collaboration with John Doe (X), has scanned close to 20,000 units. This will help to indicate stores that can do well with this release. We will focus our efforts on those stores and on the stores that have good history with our previous Sadies’ releases. POP and instore play copies are available. Email mike@yeproc.com. RADIO: Our approach to this record is to maximize success with AAA, Americana and Non-Comm stations that have a history with the band. The recent success from Country Club will give us a good "in" at Americana and should help bolster our efforts. PRESS: An early press release has already been sent and announcements for the album’s release have been running. This effort will be followed by servicing of an Mp3 to all music blogs as well as the tour announcement. A focus of the efforts will be to get reviews that time with street date on No Depression, My Old Kentucky Blog, Paste, Blurt, Jambase, Rolling Stone, American Songwriter as well as all guitar magazines. TOUR: The band is going to do the Truck Festival (April) in upstate New York before the record releases before then start a 20 date tour June 5 on the West Coast, through SoCal and into the Midwest. The tour continues by hitting the East Coast at the end of June and will include dates in NYC, Boston, Philly, DC and Cleveland. They'll play Art Park in Buffalo as well, and will likely add another leg later in the year that goes through the Southeast. Advertising: Banner and print advertising will be placed in No Depression, Blurt, Paste and more. DESCRIPTIVE TEXT

A Small Turn of Human Kindness, is as dense and as heavy temperamentally as it is

musically. The seven songs so subtly bleed together that the listener has no choice, but to view the entire album as a linear orchestration with a singular ebb and flow. A rising and falling action, refined to hell and back. And so, all of these things lead me to believe that any and all true Harvey Milk fans will eventually argue this record as the band's finest work. Or at least the vinyl version will become the quintessential mantle-piece for a generation of suburban children slumming it in the inner city… you know who you are!

PRESS QUOTES

“Harvey Milk's soul and swagger -- long apparent but often stretched and overdriven -- come together clean at last, the perfect, unpredictable pinnacle for a marvelous maze of a career.” - Pitchfork “...the undersung journeymen revered by their peers and overlooked by the scene’s Sunday drivers. They were the first and scruffiest in an indie-metal lane now densely populated with enlightened plodders like Isis, Pelican, Torche and Kylesa.” - Paste Magazine “The band piles on heaps of grimy distortion, slow, plodding riffs and enough bong-water jams to make the band more than just an exercise in cerebral noisesculpting ventures.” - Aversion “Essential listening for fans of the band or anyone interested in the depth of sludge rock’s brutality.” - No Ripcord “Often called the South’s answer to the Melvins, Harvey Milk were the very antithesis of the Athens, GA, college rock scene they were unfortunately swept up in.” - Decibel

PEARLY GATE MUSIC PEARLY GATE MUSIC

STREET DATE: MAY 18, 2010 Pearly Gate Music is an incredibly gifted gentleman by the name of Zach Tillman (although he records and usually plays live with a stylistic variety of full-band options), who makes beautiful, challenging, simple-yet-complicated songs structured around his extraordinary singing, vivid lyrics, and unusual melodic sense. Sometimes conjuring the feeling of a punk rock religious revival in an old-time prairie tent, sometimes stripped down to spare acoustic-guitar-and-lovely-croon, Tillman’s music sounds as if it were written and performed by a bedraggled dust bowl poet influenced by whatever popular songs from the poor folk circuit were being sung after dinner in the parlors of his youth – and who somehow managed to supernaturally absorb the sound of Lubbock circa 1955, Laurel Canyon circa 1968 and Berlin circa 1980.

...in the presence of a young man who is really more of a complicated old man, with a complicated, conflicted old man heart. He's an old man with tons of questions left, tons of swirling and confusing emotions and statements to make… We're overcome by Tillman's gorgeous and provocative writing, giving us the kinds of poignant and cutting truths/insight that one like Kris Kristofferson does with every single line he's ever written. A song like ‘Gossamer Hair’ contains bits and pieces of everything that make Tillman one of the most promising new artists in the country. It shows his sensational energy… and he's absolutely got our attention.

Artist: The Hundred in the Hands Title: This Desert (EP) Overview Brooklyn-based duo The Hundred in the Hands are set to release their This Desert EP May 18 on Warp Records. This Desert strikes a path that touches on elegant French pop, blissed out dub, house and post-punk. The 6-track EP sets the stage for deeper explorations on a full-length this fall.

05.18.10 WRP9293

The Hundred in the Hands is Jason Friedman and Eleanore Everdell. The recently-signed group makes emotionally charged and intensely driving music, which harks back to the most classic of dance songs from NYC’s storied underground. The band describes the EP as, “The more ethereal, gauzy side of our tastes; the Summertime-Gothic and dreamy tracks we made thinking they’d go well with open hydrants and looks that kill.” But The Hundred in the Hands’ self-description belies more than just a dance band. Everdell and Friedman bend and blend styles, sounds and eras into something that doesn’t feel confused, fake or forced. It just feels fun. This Desert EP will follow on the heels of the “Dressed in Dresden” 12” single. The critically acclaimed single comes packed with huge remixes from Detroit techno wunderkind Kyle Hall, London bass maestros Various (aka Various Production) and NYC-via-Paris party monster Maxime for diverse contributions to the original song’s expansive verve. NME alternately describes it as a “Polyrhythmic beauty” and “Nonchalant vocals, juddering guitars with rumbling doom bass…” and Q magazine adds, “You really can’t help but fall in love with this track.”

Stephanie Finch Cry Tomorrow

Release Date: 05.18.10 Cry Tomorrow is a little gem. As are diamonds. A casually stunning love letter to classic song. An album whose sound recalls ‘Loaded’ era Velvet Underground tunes alongside The Modern Lovers and Brill Building pop -- but ultimately all revolves around Stephanie Finch’s relaxed, cool, confident presence. Backed by The Company Men: Chuck Prophet, Kelley Stoltz, and Rusty Miller. ‘Cry Tomorrow’ is an instant classic.

“Sometimes I worry about what people might think about a record I produced. I really don’t produce records that often. But this time around, I don’t care. I know it’s good. Very good. I can wrap my hand around it. And it feels as perfect as the first guitar neck I ever held.” -Chuck Prophet “For a boy-genius growing up in the 60’s longing to be old enough to make out with Dusty Springfield, Stephanie Finch is today’s goddess of love incarnate -- subtle, sophisticated, both near and far. Her songs are proverbs. Ms. Finch is a perfect gift for this swindled generation.” -Guy Neal Williams, The Crescent Review Track Listing

01. 02. 03. 04. 05. 06. 07. 08. 09. 10.

Tina Goodbye So Do Don’t Back Out Now Sensitive Boys She’s the one In My Book Of Love Transmission Count the Days 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 Wandering Son All is Forgiven

Stephanie’s already sung her roots out with Chuck Prophet. And whispered softly with Red House Painters, on ‘Songs for a Blue Guitar’ with Mark Kozelek. She also popped up as a cameo on the odd tribute for Joe South, and on the soundtrack to Sign Of God with Jonathon Richman. (If your cable’s paid up, you may have seen her playing Judy Collins in HBO’s Chicago 7 biopic). Stephanie’s butter-wouldn’t-melt voice (except when topping apple pie) on one hand, and the Company Men’s sometimes raucous but always soulful harmonies on the other - lives at the heart of all Ms. Finch’s songs. It gives Cry Tomorrow a quiet urgency and a unique twist. The CD (with TV noir jacket art) includes some intriguing covers: an un-released Randy Newman song, She’s the One - (a bent out-take from the short-lived but incendiary TV musical Cop Rock) as well as Ms. Finch’s take on the Prophet/Alejandro Escovedo tune Sensitive Boys ‘-- turn your amps up loud ... I need you more than ever now’. It evokes the album’s subtle intelligence: a heartfelt ballad given an ironic twist, still bathed in tenderness. If Cry Tomorrow were a movie, it’d be a Hal Hartley film -with better jokes. And popcorn you’d be willing to share. Marketing Full radio servicing with emphasis on on NPR key Internet and AAA radio. Stephanie tours tirelessly with Chuck Prophet. In fact, the family business owns it’s own Ford Econoline van.

Resounds with echoes of Neil Young, Pete Townshend, and Phil Ochs. A must-own for anyone who ever cared about any of those three influences. –All Music Guide Strongly influenced by early Buffalo Springfield, Bob Dylan, and Gene Clark-era Byrds, Winter Hours’ rootsy, aggressive style put them in sharp contrast with their late-’80s rock brethren. A quintet consisting of Joseph Marques on vocals, Michael Carlucci on guitar, Bob Perry on guitars and vocals, Bob Messing on bass, and Stanley Demeski on drums, the band built up a presence on college radio after opening for artists like the Bongos, the Godfathers, Let’s Active, the Hoodoo Gurus, and Marshall Crenshaw. By the time they had signed with Link Records and issued their first EP, 1985’s Churches, they had a new drummer, John Albanese. Four more EPs followed in 1986 on Link, Wait till the Morning, The Confessional, Leaving Time, and Say the Word (which featured another new drummer, Frank Fiannini). The same endless touring that helped build their fan base also brought them to the attention of Chrysalis Records, who signed the band and issued their self-titled LP in 1989 (with a new drummer Dave Scheff). SCOTT MORGAN RELEASE DATE : 5/18/10

The legendary SCOTT MORGAN

(RATIONALS, SONIC'S RENDEZVOUS BAND) has teamed up with some of

Detroit's most highly regarded underground luminaries to make his definitive solo album, and introduce his voice to the world at large. Scott Morgan, the album, is here to remind everyone that one of the greatest singers in rock'n'roll music walks among us. Following the long awaited 2009 UK release of the Rationals A-Squared recordings (Big Beat), Scott performed the Rationals' songs live at select gigs with a MATTHEW SMITH band consisting of (OUTRAGEOUS CHERRY / NATHANIEL MAYER), CHRIS TAYLOR (AVATARS / MAZINGA), JIM DIAMOND (DIRTBOMBS / WITCHES), and DAVID SHETTLER (SSM / SIGHTS / NATHANIEL MAYER). Scott's new group played with the dynamics and energy of the Rationals and the MC5, but the thing that really blew everyone's minds was the voice at the center of it all. Scott Morgan is a first rate soul singer, admired by everyone from MITCH RYDER to NATHANIEL MAYER, from ROB TYNER to IGGY. The general feeling seemed to be that the world needed a Scott Morgan LP that would really showcase his influential and mesmerizing vocal stylings. Since his 70's stint in Sonic's Rendezvous Band, Scott Morgan has made a lot of great music with a variety of bands, a lot of loud motor city style stuff, and some straight up soul music as well (The Scott Morgan Band, Scots Pirates, The Hydromatics, Powertrane, The Solution), but this is his first proper solo outing. Scott Morgan, the album, is a point where Detroit soul tradition meets Ann Arbor music history in a blast of Downtown Detroit contemporary rockn'roll culture. It is brought to you by the producers responsible for records by NATHANIEL MAYER, The GO, The WHITE STRIPES, The SIGHTS, and a whole lot of other good stuff.

Daniel Higgs Say God Thrill - 240

Daniel Higgs is a musician and artist from Baltimore, Maryland on whose behalf superlatives are destined to fail. It’s not that his artistic output – spanning three decades, numerous albums, books of poetry and collections of drawings – simply eludes classification, it defies it. Often we hear that a true work of art is meant to speak for itself, and with the work of Daniel Higgs the maxim rings truer than ever. His art is of the cosmos, we on Earth merely lucky that it happens to be confined to our atmosphere, in our lifetime. Higgs is known primarily for his work as the sole lyricist and frontman of the band Lungfish, a four-piece dedicated to charting, in this listener’s estimation, nothing short of the evolution of all species, known and unknown. That the band has undertaken this pursuit in the guise of a humble rock outfit, in the absence of any public relations fanfare, metanarrative, or manifesto has been enough to endear them to tens of thousands. They are enshrined as one of America’s last true folk bands, and Higgs anointed as a patron saint to artistic purity. In recent years, Higgs has released a number of solo outings that can only be described as the ultimate in isolation, worlds away from the hypnotic, communal rock of his band. Higgs follows up the 2007 album/book release Atomic Yggdrasil Tarot with his new double album Say God. SAY GOD is an album of gospel songs and poems as presently received by this Daniel Higgs. Recorded with the help and enthusiasm of David Andrew Sitek, who graciously provided this Daniel Higgs with an environment in which to prosper and enjoy the adventure of recording, or, if you will, the ENSNARING of songs as they migrate through time and mind, that they might be heard many places at once, with the singer absent. Song seeds cast abroad, that their message, THE ADVENT OF THE SONGWAY, the WAY ACROSS, might take root, twist and fruit, light for all. It is the simple hope of this Daniel Higgs that the album SAY GOD may be of any use to the listener, may serve the listener, may accompany the listener in clairaudient fellowship. In the era of single song downloads, Pontiak have created a record meant to be heard in sequence in it’s entirety. Start by spreading some “Young” on your toast. Slip into the deliberately paced “Algiers By Day” as it builds and teases and leaves you suspended in anticipation, only to be dropped into the unforgiving explosion of “And By Night”. The howling intro of “This is Living” is a great example of an essential element of Pontiak; textural contrasts. The softly sung and often melodic vocals and the pummeling instruments behind them. While the vocals on “Forms of The” and the instruments strike the same melodic tone, the contrast between it and the track that follows provides a certain degree of palpable tension. A nontoo-subtle tension as “Thousand Citrus” starts with an extended buzz. Wood-shedders at heart, Pontiak are as relentless in their musical explorations as they are with their guitar attacks. They are happy about all those that have chosen to follow their travels, but would travel regardless. Their live show is earsplitting and yet the brothers are low key and soft spoken off stage. Unpredictable, unforgiving, and utterly individual. Simply put, our favorite kind of rock.

GENRE : POP FILE UNDER: “H” High Places

Release Date: May 18, 2010 NO EXPORT If High Places’ recent new releases have proven anything, TRACK LISTING: it’s that the band has been well suited by their recent move to Los Angeles. Warmer air and a proximity to nature have Side A reinvigorated the band, and The Village Voice says of their 1. Can’t Feel Nothing recent LP, “Bad news, folks: This new High Places album is 2. I was Born easily their best yet… their L.A.-derived High Places vs. Mankind effortlessly trounces its New York predecessor,” and called their Side B new material “really rad in a way you never really thought of 3. I was Born (HP Remix) 4. Can’t Feel Nothing (HP Remix) High Places as being rad.” It all began with High Places’ “Late Bloomer”, a video track and one half of a split release with Soft Circle last summer, followed by the digital single and video releases of “I Was Born” on Halloween. Another new track, “Can’t Feel Born,” came in the spring, and now High Places are quickly following up the new High Places Vs. Mankind album with the Can’t Feel Born EP, a limited 12” of exclusive tracks and remixes. The “I Was Born” single demonstrated Rob Barber and Mary Pearson using a new guitar-centric instrumentation that would be featured on High Places vs. Mankind. A faster pace and darker tone also seem to permeate through the singles and this new 12” collects these tracks as well as their unheard counterparts. As on the album, Mary Pearson’s vocal are less effected and more present, but many aspects of the High Places sound and aesthetic remain intact. One hears dance rhythms, stereo effects, accessible melodies, dub influence, and as always, a love of layering and of combining the unexpected into something cohesive and new. “Despite the duo’s ambitious blending of genres, the colorful, charismatic High Places remains unique and focused, naturally absorbing a rich array of influences and ultimately thriving on the impulses behind them.” - Pitchfork’s Best Albums of 2008 Check out the video for High Places “The Longest Shadows” HERE

CATHY LEMONS & JOHNNY ACE

STREET DATE: 5/18/10

lemonace

Veteran blues bassist and master showman Johnny Ace teams up with Texas-born blues singer Cathy Lemons to lead a stellar cast through a soulstirring set of original music that draws on their deep musical backgrounds and left-of-center sense of humor. Lemonace band members Pierre Le Corre (guitar) and Artie “Stix” Chavez (drums) are joined by special guests Tommy Castro, David Maxwell, Kid Andersen, Paul Oscher and Ron Thompson. Now living in San Francisco, Cathy and Johnny have both paid their dues, in full. Cathy started out by honing her chops with Texas bluesmen such as Anson Funderburg, and even performed with Stevie Ray Vaughan. In the 1980’s she came to California and toured with John Lee Hooker as his sendoff singer. She’s been headlining her own bands since then and has come full circle as a fully developed singing stylist, writer and lyricist. Johnny, originally from New York City, has played with a who’s who of blues giants including John Lee Hooker, Otis Rush, Charlie Musselwhite, Victoria Spivey and countless others. “Johnny was always a great showman... Johnny would throw his vintage 1962 Fender P Bass into the air and let it fall onto the middle of the dance floor only to jump down on the floor and do the splits two times and then get up and grab the bass and start playing all over again. To this day I’ve never seen anyone top that... The really amazing thing about this story is that Ace finally met his match: Texas-born blues singer Cathy Lemons. I think how tragic it would be if somehow they had never met. Cathy has the great voice and clever lyrical mind and Ace has the grooves and the feels, and you put those elements together and it makes great songs. Cathy and Johnny have a unique and rare chemistry like Louis Prima and Keely Smith, Delaney and Bonnie or Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball. I don’t think they realize just how much they complement each other. This is a strong and soulful effort by two of my favorite humans. I am honored to have been asked to play on this record. And I have to add that I think Kid Andersen plays some killer guitar on it too!”

– Tommy Castro (from the liner notes)

Considered one of New England’s best kept secrets, virtuoso guitarist and vocalist Peter Parcek presents to the world an amazing calling card with The Mathematics of Love, weaving beautiful mosaics of sound on the album that reflect his interests in blues, rock, jazz, folk and country music. As someone who was lucky enough to experience the British blues explosion first hand while living in London in the late 1960s, Parcek got a chance to see Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and especially Peter Green in the clubs, making a lasting impression on the young guitar player. Parcek soon became a Peter Green fanatic, and he acknowledges his mentor with a smoking take of Green’s early Fleetwood Mac classic, “Show Biz Blues,” which kicks off the new album. Elsewhere, Parcek dazzles the ears exploring the deepest roots of American music, covering songs by Mississippi Hill Country legend Jessie Mae Hemphill (“Lord Help the Poor and Needy”), seminal bluesman Kokomo Arnold (“Kokomo Me Baby”) and the great Ray Charles (“Busted”), which features special guest Al Kooper on organ. Other covers includes Lucinda Williams’“Get Right with God” and Cousin Joe Pleasant’s “Evolution.” On Parcek’s originals, he demonstrates not only a wonderful depth of soul in his approach to the songs, but also a knack for a variety of sounds, as heard on the existentially funky instrumental, “Rollin’ with Zah,” which showcases his improvisational playing; or “New Year’s Eve,” a track with guest Ronnie Earl originally recorded for his first limited-release album and given a special remix here; or the title track, a blend of acoustic and electric guitars that meet in a perfect center. “My first limited-release album was called Evolution, but this album really is an evolution for me,” explains Peter. “It’s the most focused, emotionally complex and complete artistic statement I’ve made under my own name.” HIGHLIGHTS:

Mark Bacino is an American singer/songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist born and raised in New York City. With two critically acclaimed, power-pop obsessed album releases to his credit (1998's Pop Job! on Parasol & 2003's The Million Dollar Milkshake on Parasol in the US, Nippon Crown in Japan), Bacino returns to the fray with Queens English; a self-produced album he describes as “a melancholy love-letter to NYC & life in its outer-boroughs. With its eclectic mixture of pop, rock, ragtime-y music hall and orchestral fare, Queens English seamlessly blends its palette of tack pianos, acoustic guitars, horns, strings and things into concise, two and a half minute blasts of hook-laden songcraft reminiscent of Nilsson, Newman, solo Macca and Muswell Hillbillies-era Kinks.

OVERVIEW: Classic songwriting amidst Rubik’s-Cube-structures – the music of Berry is a curious hybrid. At once dense and delicate, their blend of forward-thinking indie-pop is as graceful as it is perplexing. Having written and recorded over 100 songs in 7 years, Berry has found a way to marry meticulously detailed instrumentation with genuinely alluring pop. The band’s most recent offering, Blue Sky, Raging Sun, contains 43 minutes of their boldest musical statements 1 to date. The album draws its inspiration from the band’s 2 “Amtrak Tour 2008,” in which Berry decided to scrap their trusty 15-passenger van and tour by train. They packed only the essentials – what fit in their arms and on their backs – but returned home with an exciting new sound. Contrarily, they also found the gloomy reality of the American music scene, but with it, a renewed vigilance to create. This is the dynamic force at the heart of the new album. Blue Sky, Raging Sun tumbles across twelve tracks of blurry musical terrain. Stark melodies pierce brooding arrangements. Cascading keyboards wash out into oceanic cymbal crashes. Sweat, love, experience, and disillusionment meld into an array of post-modern indie epics.

Simon Scott Traba

Traba is a brand new mini-LP from the UK’s Simon Scott. In the early ‘90s Scott was the drummer for renowned shoegaze band Slowdive. Recent years have seen Scott running the KESH recordings label from his base in Cambridge, performing in the group Seavault with Anthony Ryan (ISAN) on Morr Music, and also working as a sound designer for television, film and sonic art installation. 2009 saw the release of Scott’s debut solo album Navigare released on Miasmah Recordings (run by Erik Skodvin of Svarte Greiner/Deaf Center). Scott has shared studio and stage with Brian Eno, Klimek, The Caretaker, Machinefabriek, Jasper TX, Nils Frahm, Seasons (Pre-Din), Rafael Anton Irisarri, Xela, Fever Ray, Svarte Greiner, Marcus Fjellstrom, Lawrence English, Fennesz, Leyland Kirby and Taylor Deupree. He has also remixed ON, Autistici and ISAN and provided production assistance for Hannu’s album Hintergarten. Scott also performs live with The Sight Below and co-wrote songs on the new album It All Falls Apart (Ghostly International).

She Came From The Sea The Water Loop Lamina An Avalanche

(5:12) (5:06) (8:12) (5:10)

SALES POINTS Simon Scott was the drummer for renowned shoegaze group Slowdive in the early ‘90s and now is a highly respected solo artist. Traba follows up Scott’s critically praised 2009 debut album Navigare (Miasmah) Traba is pressed on high-quality virgin vinyl at RTI in an edition of 500 copies. Included is a free MP3 download coupon Traba’s artwork and design was done by Erik Skodvin (Svarte Greiner / Deaf Center / Miasmah) “Scott is particularly adept at layering coolly shimmering guitars and dark churning currents of noise into something vast...A haunting aspect of ‘Navigare’ is how it seems to contain traces of tunes that stand out like half-forgotten relics of the past” - WIRE “A wonderfully rich ambient record in its own right - one whose residual echoes of a shoegaze past give it an appeal that transcends the usual parameters of drone music”. - Boomkat (Navigare, Album of the Week)

Traba contains four tracks that were written at the end of the sessions for Navigare. When the deadline for completion of the album came and went these compositions were unfinished, but over the course of the summer and autumn of 2009 they were completed in Scott’s o3o3o Studio in Cambridge. Traba continues and expands on the themes of submergence, being lost at sea, and intoxication. Opening track “She Came From The Sea”, with it’s distant swirling brush stroke drumming, haunting vocals and deep processed textures, captures the almost overwhelming physicality of being at sea, miles from home, yearning for loved ones and a physical embrace. Though this is the first track on the record it was the last one to be written and completed after the Navigare sessions. “The Water Loop” tackles themes of addiction, obsession and urban decay via a Max/MSP manipulated loop that initially feels warmly narcoleptic but grows into something anxious and intimidating. The music evokes warmth and adventure but slowly unfolds into a dark tone of emotional weakness and paranoia. An influence of Stanley Kubrick shines out here as this is a musical landscape occupied by Droogs on Molotov cocktails threatening to impose themselves on you. “Lamina” is about a short spell of tinnitus that Scott had which resulted in a brain scan. The uncertainty of what caused the hearing damage mixed with the possibility that something had indeed grown inside his brain affected Scott in a heavy way. “Feeling like I had half of my head submerged underwater somehow matched the themes I was writing about so it inspired me to finish the track. Luckily my head was fine and the frequencies returned just in time to mix the piece”. The digitally processed acoustic instruments are blended together with field recordings taken from his local East Anglian Coast line as well as vocal samples. These elements ebb and flow until the smoldering finale that recalls the sinister imagery of the Quay Brothers, David Lynch or the Brothers Grim. Scott’s uncle was a submarine officer in the British Navy who died of alcoholism. His life away at sea fueled his fraught family life and kept his battle with drink alive until his death. Traba’s closing track “An Avalanche” is directly inspired by the moment his uncle’s heart stopped. Coming ashore after months at sea, his uncle drank himself to death. He was brought to a hospital where he was shortly brought back to life, but quickly returned to his death bed as a direct result of his eldest son’s disapproval. Traba is truly a dense collection of songs from Simon Scott.

MICK KARN — The Concrete Twin

FORMAT - CD LABEL - MK UPC - 5024545582628 CATALOG # - MKCD3 LIST PRICE - $17.99 Drama is most definitely the key word for Mick Karn's latest release The Concrete Twin. Not just because it could so easily fit in as the soundtrack to the best film or TV drama you have ever seen, but because of it's sense of classical harmony that takes one's breath away. From the opening track Ashamed To Be A Part of Them, it's obvious that this is not a background instrumental album, but one that demands attention. The 10 tracks are dense, at times overpowering, and laced with a sense of symphonic overtures that surface unexpectedly through the Jazz, Swing and Drum and Bass textures. "I wanted to move away from using samples," explains Mick, "so developed a way to sample myself.

IKONIKA -Idiot / Idiot [Altered Natives remix ]

FORMAT - 12” LABEL - Hyperdub UPC - 5055300311290 CATALOG # - HDB033 LIST PRICE - $11.99 Due for release one week after Ikonika‟s debut CD „Love, Contact, Want, Have‟, „Idiot‟ is the first in a series of picture sleeve 12”s taken from the album backed with remixes from some of Hyperdub‟s favourite current producers. „Idiot‟ is already something of a hit with those who‟ve heard it being played out, combin-ing hard soca drums with lush ecstatic melodic synth harmonies and a driving bass with a strange 8-bit melody that stumbles and trips around the rhythm. It‟s completely alien at first, but potent enough to stick in your ears until you might catch yourself humming the refrain when you least expect it. A unique and fantastic combination of compelling contemporary sounds. Altered Natives, aka North London producer Danny Native, whose track „Rass Out‟ was one of 2009‟s best, takes over the B-side with a remix that seems to reflect 20 years of British house music back on itself. Just using the bleeps from the original tune, he ech-oes and morphs his own melody over stepping dubby kicks and snares and a dark, driving bassline.

KYLE HALL —Kaychunk / You Know What I Feel

FORMAT - 12” LABEL - Hyperdub UPC - 5055300311283 CATALOG # - HDB032 LIST PRICE - $11.99 After his remix of Darkstar‟s „Aidy‟s Girl Is A Computer‟ at the end of last year, Hyperdub were quick to request an EP from Kyle Hall, and these two fantastic tracks are the outcome. Just 18 years old and hailing from Detroit, Kyle Hall has been getting a lot of attention after releasing several EPs on his own Wild Oats label, plus a one-sided single for Omar S‟ FHXE imprint. However, this is his first full release for another label. Both tracks inhabit an interzone between live and mechanical music, full of details and fills that lend a playful, hands-on feel. „Kaychunk‟ wraps lush arpeggios and classic warm Detroit strings around shuffling syncopated drums into an upbeat track that‟s al-most a mirror image of uk funky. „You Know What I Feel‟ combines 2-step kicks that sound like rain hitting wood, with great clouds of bittersweet chords, a see-sawing bassline, and a rich swooning melody that echoes Stevie Wonder‟s classic „70s synth-drenched soul.

Release Date: April 6, 2010 NOT EXPORTABLE TRACK LISTING:

Jason Urick is highly regarded in the Baltimore music and arts scene, through his work in the group WZT Hearts and at the Floristree Space where he has curated many shows and festivals. Fussing & Fighting follows his solo album debut Husbands, and finds Urick pushing his music further forward with new experiments in rhythm and sonic space. “Phantom drones twirl, drifting in and out of hearing range, cloaked in a faintly menacing electronic buzz… Urick is in complete and utter control of the sonics he commands.” - Baltimore City Paper “Husbands is a very compelling and enjoyable listen...it’s near faultless...these four tracks are certainly worth 43 minutes of anyone’s time” - Drowned In Sound (UK) The three tracks on Fussing & Fighting were spawned during the period just after Urick completed his work on Husbands. After not listening to little else as he finished that album, Urick dove deep into some old faves, including Pita’s Get Out and the Gas catalog, and also became obsessed with videos of London reggae linchpin Jah Shaka. The three compositions included on this 12” are experiments in trying to combine these influences into Urick’s working methods established for Husbands. Unlike Husbands’ gentle washes of ambience, the songs on Fussing & Fighting are Urick’s first in a very long time to incorporate any sort of rhythmic element, however simple. This time Urick made a conscious effort to slowly steer away from the experiments with density on display on Husbands, opening up his music sonically and allowing things to breathe. As with Husbands, all three of the original tracks were recorded by Urick himself at Floristree. The fourth and final piece on Fussing & Fighting is Matthew Papich of Ecstatic Sunshine’s take on the title track, recorded with engineer Craig Bowen.

Future Islands In The Fall Thrill - 12.41 Limited 12” EP $11.99 BOX LOT 12” 40 Vinyl is non-returnable

*90377-BCEBBi

GENRE: POP FILE UNDER: “F” Future Islands

Release Date: April 6, 2010 NOT EXPORTABLE TRACK LISTING: Too many bands in the era of buzz and the blog are taken before their time. The spotlight hits hard and finds a group who has not yet developed, not yet put in the work to find their sound and hone it and make themselves better, and just as quickly they’re gone. Future Islands are not one of those bands. J Gerrit Welmers, William Cashion and Samuel T Herring have been making music together since 2003, and as Future Islands since 2006, putting in the work. Formed as college friends in Greenville, NC, Future Islands relocated to Baltimore after becoming friends with Dan Deacon, an early and avid supporter of the band. They’ve released a handful of CD-Rs, tapes and limited vinyl releases, and their debut album Wave Like Home came out on UK label Upset the Rhythm in 2008. They’ve toured extensively in the US and Europe, including the Baltimore Round Robin tours and opening for and performing in Dan Deacon’s large ensemble. For their effort, Future Islands have mastered their style, which Rolling Stone describes as, “adding punishing heft to simple pop melodies, making blippy electropop sound oddly confrontational.” Future Islands calls is “Post-Wave,” taking in part from the emotional fragility of New Wave and coupling it with the power and drive of Post-Punk. Their upcoming Thrill Jockey debut LP, In Evening Air, will be their first proper and timely US album release. Future Islands’ music is spearheaded by Welmers, whose layers of synths and drums create the landscape for Cashion’s punching-strum bass guitar, that pulses and fights, creating noise and bliss. Herring, who has been called “one of the most magnetic frontmen in indie rock,” finds his space in between. Carving through the music, at times, with a whispering croon, and at others, with a deathly wail. In addition to Future Islands’ collaborating with Dan Deacon for his large ensemble and Round Robin tours, their upcoming releases were recorded with the help Deacon producer Chester Endersby Gwazda. The title track on In The Fall features the vocal assistance of the fantastic Katrina Ford (Celebration). Future Islands also recently collaborated with No Age and Victoria Legrand of Beach House for tracks on their Post Office Wave Chapel 12” on Free Danger, and the EP features remixes by Javelin and Pictureplane. In The Fall will be followed by the May release of their album, In Evening Air. Future Islands will be touring the US very heavily around the album release, including more than six weeks of US shows in May and June.

‘LIVE 1988’ collects the third and fourth of The Wedding Present’s infamous ‘live tapes’; cassettes that the band sold at gigs and through their fanzine in the late 80s. The recordings were unavailable anywhere else. Fans eagerly collected them and they became very rare. This is the second in the series of these much-demanded CD and digital releases - ‘Live 1987’ was released in 2007 to critical acclaim. Live 1988 is especially interesting because it includes some early versions of tracks [their first hit ‘Kennedy’, for instance] that went on to appear on their major label debut, Bizarro. For 2010 the band are celebrating the 21st Anniversary of the release of Bizarro by playing the album live. In 1988 The Wedding Present were at a crescendo of speeding guitars and lovelorn lyrics… and it’s all even faster and more frantic live, of course, with the adrenalin of public performance, but somehow it all holds together. The third and final part of Mike Ladd's epic Infesticons concept trilogy, “Bedford Park” sees the remnants of the Infesticons' marching band emerge from a bunker to find out that not only is the war with the Majesticons over, but no one can even remember who either side are. With various guests including Saul Williams, Creature, Juice Aleem and Seraphim (of No Surrender), Ladd fashions a ragged punk-blues noise for this strange, beautiful and funny coda, a sound which has already been described as “Dinosaur Jr by Black people.”

Dave Holland Octet Pathways Premium Edition

When Dave Holland forms a new group, people listen. The band or album may be new, but it’s always the same genius. Pathways marks the recording debut of the Dave Holland Octet and the fourth album to be released on Holland’s own Dare2 label. The players should be familiar to jazz fans: Chris Potter (tenor, soprano), Robin Eubanks (trombone), Steve Nelson (vibes, marimba), and Nate Smith (drums). Added to the front-line are other Holland collaborators Antonio Hart (alto), Alex Sipiagin (trumpet), and Gary Smulyan (baritone). Holland returned to New York’s Birdland to record Pathways – capturing this incredible group of improvisers in full flight.

Packaging Details Limited to 1000 copies, and designed by Grammy-award winning package designer Susan Archie (Screamin’ and Hollerin’ the Blues: The Worlds of Charley Patton), this edition of Pathways comes in a 5” x 7” lidded box, containing six postcard-sized reproductions of classic Dave Holland concert posters designed by Niklaus Troxler, including a poster commemorating the Dave Holland Octet’s recording of Pathways live at Birdland in 2009. This set of 6 “postcard” posters, printed on board stock, are belly-banded and include an appreciation of Niklaus Troxler’s work by his long-time friend and associate, Holland. The CD comes in a 4-panel folder decorated with Troxler’s art as well.
