FOALS -TAPES Tapes (from !K7) asks the great and good of modern music making the question, "What would be the perfect mixtape?" The only rules are old school. Two halves (like an old tape) split roughly down the middle, home made artwork and some showing off about the depths of your record collection. Musically there are no boundaries. This edition: Foals Foals answer this by creating a mix which is eclectic, pop, deep, druggy and heavily influenced by the spirit of the early house scene shown by inclusion of the originators, Marshall Jefferson and Arnold Jarvis and the modern day benefactors like Julio Bashmore and Tanner Ross . There's some digging in the crates - Confusion (Ma Afrika) was ripped from a real tape and comes from Apartheid era South Africa and a remix of Sepalcure - Every Day Of My Life by Jimmy Edgar! All in all - the perfect mixtape. Foals always wanted to make kids dance, but it was not ever thus. Four of their five members coalesced from the ashes of various circuit-hardened bands. They were bored of the anally retentative indie-math-post-whatever nanocosm they inhabited, and tired of the staid, codified dynamics of the rock show. They wanted to make music that was new, vibrant and exciting, to recreate the feeling the first time they'd heard Repeater or Daydream Nation. Edwin Congreave had never played an instrument before, but during his shifts in an Oxford restaurant he'd introduced Yannis Phillipakis (the nascent band's first-among-equals) to enough hours of mindblowing music to warrant a place in any rehearsal room or recording studio. It was decided that Edwin, now armed with a few curious analogue eBay finds, would become their synth player, and his cutting-edge knowledge of labels like Kompakt, DFA, R&S and Strictly Rhythm and understanding of the dynamics of the dancefloor would become the crucial final piece of the sound of their debut album, the tight, uncompromising and brutally funky Antidotes. After joining Foals he would DJ through the night after the visceral, chaotic house party sets that made the band's name, and as the band grew in stature and crashed into the mainstream he'd play at their after-parties, be they swanky label-funded Kensington nightclubs or airless basements in his native Oxford. The one thing that remained constant was Edwin's sets; always striking that perfect balance between obscure and popular; always sending the party into raptures.

SAINT SAVIOUR UNION OVERVIEW As Saint Saviour, Becky Jones has trodden an unconventional and uncompromising path towards artistic salvation. It hasn’t always been easy. It’s a story that stretches from the workhouses of Dickensian London to the arena house concerts across the globe. But throughout it all, and with her spectral and hypnotic debut album, she may just have emerged as one of the defining solo artists of her time. Lawrence Arabia The Sparrow National Release Date: CD/LP: 07/24/2012 Introducing the new album from New Zealand songwriter/producer Lawrence Arabia. The Sparrow is Lawrence Arabia's third solo album, the evocative follow up to the Taite Music Prize/Silver Scroll winning Chant Darling. Venturing away from the harmony-laden, classic pop production of Chant Darling, The Sparrow is a more measured and minimalist work, drawing particularly on the influence of the symphonic late-sixties work of Scott Walker and Serge Gainsbourg. The songwriter, known to his bosom compadres as James Milne, explains: "I'd been turned off the infinite possibilities of Pro-Tools production by the process of making my last album. You can mimic any sound from any part of pop history and stack them up on endless tracks and edit them in endless ways. It's maddening. I became totally enamoured with the mystique and aesthetic limitations of these late-sixties and earlyseventies records where there was so much space in the arrangements and you can really luxuriate in the sounds of individual instruments." While various ominous words like "mature,” and “serious” come to mind, there are still strong traces of the witty pop songwriting that defined the first two Arabia albums. The material for The Sparrow was accumulated throughout 2010, while Lawrence and his band The Prime Ministers toured in support of Chant Darling. Images like the "crude moustache, exposed brains" seen on a poster of Zac Efron in the New York subway, the jaded conversation with the TomTom on a rainy British motorway, "the last breaths" of a London house party that dragged on just a little too long, were collected throughout the year as contextfree scribbles in a diary, waiting for songs to attach themselves to. These images found homes during a fairly frenzied period of writing in borrowed lounge rooms and rehearsal spaces at the end of another abject London summer. During the same period, the enigmatic title "The Sparrow" surfaced and became some kind of mysterious guiding image for the aesthetic of the album, the angst of the inexorably approaching thirties, represented in the form of a small, malevolent bird. God knows why.

CONSTANTS pasiflora After releasing the heaviest album of their career with 2010’s If Tomorrow The War (produced by Justin K Broadrick of Jesu/Godflesh), Constants’ fifth studio album Pasiflora reveals a very different side of the band, this time with an emphasis on shoegaze and an almost retro-sensibility. Whispering vocal harmonies, walls of chorused synths and booming Peter Gabriel-esque drums coalesce into an album landing somewhere between M83 and Mew. Simply put, Pasiflora might just be their best and most creative release yet. Late last Summer, with nine years, four critically acclaimed albums and countless international tours under their belts, the members of Constants began to feel pigeonholed into the “post-metal/post-rock/post-whatever” scenes. So they set out to write an album that would redefine their already genre-bending sound from the outset, but it wasn’t until drummer Rob Motes presented a batch of bedroom demos that the new album really began to take shape. The group scrapped 6 months and 10 songs worth of material to embrace the vibrant and textural sound that would become Pasiflora. “We aim to surprise people with every record and like to work outside of our own safe zone as much as possible. The challenge is to shape the result into a clear, consistent album,” says guitarist/vocalist Will Benoit. “We’re genuinely excited to have found something fresh at a point in our timeline where most bands become stagnant.” Pasiflora was self-produced in Benoit’s Radar Studios (Junius, Caspian) – New England’s first and only Solar-Powered recording facility – and co-mixed by Daryl Rabidoux (Bad Rabbits, The Cancer Conspiracy). NATIONAL release date: 2xLP: 07.24.2012 John Wesley Harding's New Deal, originally released by Rhino in 1996, and here released for the first time on vinyl, was the songwriter's first album away from Sire, after the early 90's trilogy of Here Comes The Groom, The Name Above The Title and Why We Fight. Left to his own devices, on his own dime, determined (for the first time) to make precisely the record he wanted, Harding produced an unexpectedly introspective album that instantly became a fan favorite, and coincided with a sharp turn towards the acoustic in his career, inspired less by Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, and The Lovin' Spoonful, and more by the more baroque folk stylings of Cat Stevens, Duncan Browne and early Bee Gees. The title, which seemed to refer to the end of his association with Sire, also signaled a change of intent. The Sire records were partly successful because of their almost absurd stylistic variety, but on New Deal, Harding seemed for the first time to find his authentic musical voice on a record that worked precisely because of its cohesion of expression. The record was made at Chris von Sneidern's Ordophon-upon-Avon studio in San Francisco in almost ludicrously laid-back conditions, one or two days a week for many months. Parts weren't recorded until particular friends happened to pass through town. At the mastering session, the engineer asked what the almost inaudible squeak was on some of the tracks: "Well, probably the mattress," said the singer. "I did most of the vocals sitting on a bed." The focus here is the songs themselves, with their simple, rich, emotionally direct arrangements. It was the first time a John Wesley Harding production married form and content; each song seemed to have the perfect setting; no instrument was unnecessary. Drums were used on only two songs, and only at the end of one of those. It was as though Harding, with the shrewd guidance of von Sneidern, was learning how to make a record as he recorded this one. Though Harding didn't want to clutter the vinyl, or alter the presentation of the original record, with unnecessary associated material, this version comes with a digital download of 15 bonus tracks, including every extant acoustic demo of the songs on the album, numbering ten, all previously unreleased, recorded 6/7/94 for a tape called "The Sayonara Sessions". Also included are five bonus tracks from the Other People's Failure CD5, including two out-takes (Let Us Now and Death of The Ghostwriter), live versions of Kiss Me, Miss Liberty and The Secret Angel, and the classic, prophetic When The Beatles Hit America, in its finest incarnation, recorded live for KSCA, LA. It’s truly apt that Raw Money Raps opens with Jeremiah Jae hazily reminiscing about awakening from an especially chimerical journey. More than just an album, this is an all-encompassing Pynchonian, Tumblr-feeding, social networked art-rap fever dream. A seismic collision of the analog and digital worlds makes for deceptively hooky beats that double as sonic rabbit-holes, all of which cradles Jae’s flow – which is a versatile instrument all it’s own, skipping from rapid, focused deliveries to surprising melodic sing-a-longs then chopped-and-screwed slump and stream of consciousness brainfloods. I’m Going Away is The Fiery Furnaces’ eighth album. It was recorded by and mixed with Jason Loewenstein at the end of 2008 and the beginning of 2009 in New York City. Jason also played bass and Robert D’Amico played drums. All songs were written together by Eleanor and Matthew Friedberger, except for the title track, which is “trad. On their Thrill Jockey debut Occupied with the Unspoken, Golden Retriever create polyphonic music from monophonic instruments. The bass clarinet and the analog modular synthesizer are generally both capable of playing only one note at a time. Starting from this point of pure melody, Golden Retriever then find ways to turn melody into harmony using their “boring old one-note instruments” to make live electronic music that is remarkably rich in textural details and almost symphonic in its use of layering. Though the music is often classified as experimental, its most salient feature is melody. It is made remarkable by the ease at which it takes the disparate elements of minimalism, free jazz, noise, classical, and even pop and shapes it all into something emotionally compelling.

Recorded live, but then heavily edited in Carlson’s basement studio, Occupied with the Unspoken’s songs are more concise then those found on Light Cones (2011, Root Strata) or in their typical live performance, where often Sielaff and Carlson allow room for exploration and re-invention of their material. The four songs presented here were typically performed as 25 or 30 minutes pieces. For the album, the songs were distilled into shorter passages where the original structure remains, but each section within the overall song has been shortened. The process allowed Sielaff and Carlson to fit more ideas into the album, and taken as a whole it is a more complete document of their stylistic variety than previous releases. While many of the compositional ideas behind the tracks are complicated, Occupied with the Unspoken excels in being an approachable listen. An impressive album of soaring melodic lines and vivid soundscapes, the aptly named Occupied with the Unspoken belies the complex creative process making the understanding of it merely an exciting bonus.

The Black Twig Pickers take it to the dance floor on Whompyjawed, offering longform, highly rhythmic and deeply layered takes on traditional fiddle and banjo music. Joined by some of the musicians who frequent the Southwest Virginia square dance and flatfooting scene -- fiddler Sally Morgan, and bassist/guitarists Sam Linkous and Joe Dejarnette -- and by a troupe of accomplished feet-percussionists, the Twigs work up propulsive and mesmerizing versions of two side-long songs. “Merry Mountain Hoedown” is an old-time rocker with Mike Gangloff and Sally Morgan’s duo fiddles sawing atop a careening bed of pounding feet and furiously locked-in banjo, guitars and bass, while “Brushy Fork of John’s Creek,” with Sally fiddling and Mike banjoing, wanders more spectral -- but no less ferocious -- territory, with Nathan Bowles’ washboard and Isak Howell’s guitar and mouth harp guiding a long and shifting mix of clattering drone. The Skillet Lickers meet Faust IV? The trio have toured the UK in the company of both Jack Rose and Charlie Parr, accompanying Rose on a series of raucous UK shows to celebrate the Jack Rose & The Black Twig Pickers album released in 2009. Rose and Gangloff were of course longtime band mates in drone masters Pelt, symbolizing the band’s emergence into traditional music from a more experimental background (Bowles is also now a member of Pelt and both he and Gangloff perform as part of Spiral Joy Band). They also followed Rose onto Thrill Jockey’s books, releasing Ironto Special, an album of traditional Appalachian old-time tunes (and two originals) in 2010. That same year they also released an album of traditional gospel music, Glory in the Meeting House, with Parr contributing his trademark sturdy-but-sweet vocals and resonator guitar. In 2011, the Twigs collaborated with Parr on a Record Store Day split LP for Thrill Jockey, with the flip side featuring recordings from Cambridge, MA based guitarist Glenn Jones. Through study of both local old-time musicians and old-time records and field recordings, the trio have literally come to old-time from leftfield, purely through their love of the music, and found they can hold their own with the old-timers, constantly tearing up the Virginian highways to keep commitments at bars, country fairs and parties, while simultaneously turning on their more avant listeners too. Bowles has also become a powerhouse banjo player of growing repute, with his first solo album in the works.

This box set is huge the box measures 19 inches by 13 inches and includes 6 cds, 2 dvds, 1 208 page book mainly focussing on the Grateful Dead, 10 postcards, 1 replicated poster. The legendary Bickershaw Festival took place on the 5th to 7th May 1972 in a small village near Wigan, Lancashire. Organised by the late Jeremy Beadle and Harry ‘The Count Bilkus’, it may have been one of the wettest rock festivals in history, but will always be remembered as one of the last all-night festivals, where the Grateful Dead played for over four hours! The Bickershaw Festival box set has been lovingly put together over the past eight years by festival worker, Chris Hewitt with help until late 2007, from Jeremy Beadle. As Chris said, "When Jeremy and I first started to plan the Bickershaw Box Set about five years ago, we wanted to create something that when you opened the lid you were transported back to the festival site." Accompanying the 6 CDs of music (both soundboard and audience recordings), and 2 DVDs (5 ½ hours of footage), is a 208 page hardback book containing personal accounts, music reviews and colour photographs. Beadle assembled one of the most ambitious programme of bands for any festival held in the North West (or UK for that matter) - bringing an incredible contingent of American acts to merge with some of the best folk and rock acts from the UK. A festival music programme that started during the day on Friday and ran well into the early hours of Saturday and Sunday morning culminating with the late afternoon early evening set of the Grateful Dead on the Sunday. Although she’s been associated with the development of the new UK house and funky sound, Cooly G's productions have always existed in their own hinterland. Her music is full of stripped down, tribal post-garage beats graced by dubtracted vocals, incomplete seductions and glimpsed vexations, uttered over empty spaces and lush washes. On ‘Playin’ Me’ she displays the full spectrum of her sound, plummeting from her sometimes melancholy, sometimes romantic songs through to her more menacing, trackier style. Recorded without any frills in her home studio, the album simultaneously recalls a legacy of black British music, filtering the female pressure and reggae lilt of lovers rock’s kitchen sink dramas, the sweet seduction of ‘80s-flavoured “Quiet Storm” soul, through to sour, bitter-sweet synths, and the polyrhythmic dub decay of early jungle and tough tribal drums. ‘He Said I said' sets the tone in dramatic fashion with some guitar licks borrowed from a Spaghetti Western before the smouldering lyrics grace the tracks. ‘What The World Needs Now’ is a dreamy, uplifting stepper with big summery strings. ‘Come Into My Room’ is romantic and piano-led, with smooth Arp strings, breaking into twinkling 808 cowbells and teasing with rushing drum patterns midway through. ‘Good Times’ pleads over cold droplets and shivering synths while, by contrast, ‘Sunshine’ is a mid-summer skank. The more ambient refrain of ‘Trying’ sounds like an intro to a classic Jungle track whose sub bass undertow never resolves in a drop. By the time we get to 'Playin’ Me', the romance has started turning a bit sour, and rage amps up through an in your face bass riff, that bulldozes through swirling strings and tough kick drums. The biggest surprise of the record is Cooly’s cover of Coldplay’s ‘Trouble’, making it shiver and bounce with a strange clockwork rhythm and epic techno strings. It’s a talented and brave producer that can make a Coldplay song sound fresh and the song sits naturally in the album’s flow. ‘What Airtime’ starts the album’s slide towards instrumentals, with hard drum track echoes and stormy mood. ‘It’s Serious' featuring Baltimore house legend Karizma is a masterclass in sustaining dark, heads down energy whilst filling a track with twists and turns and rhythmic trapdoors. ‘Is it Gone’ is wonkier still, spinning together dubbed vocals and drums into weird collisions recalling prime period Metalheadz of Rufige Kru and Source Direct. She concludes the album on the more colourful and heady ‘Up In My Head’, combining her stop start rhythms with intoxicated vocals. Cooly G has produced a first album that sits next to other recent Hyperdub debuts by Laurel Halo, Dean Blunt & Inga Copeland and DVA as records with original and single-minded perspectives that manage to straddle pop and experimentation perfectly.
