It's a complete protein!" - Neko Case From one of the country’s most inimitable songwriters – Portland, Oregon’s Laura Veirs – comes her ninth full-length album. Beautiful, lush and at times deeply dark, "Warp and Weft" captures the intensity of motherhood, love and violence. Primarily electric-guitar driven, it is a fever dream of an album and could well be Veirs’ best work to date. It builds on the uniform praise and commercial success of 2010's "July Flame," which Utne Reader dubbed “idiosyncratic and captivating” and received glowing reviews from The New York Times, Pitchfork, NPR and others. The recording of "Warp and Weft" (a weaving term) was a community effort. Produced in Portland in March 2013 by Veirs’ longtime collaborator Tucker Martine, the album features Jim James, kd lang, Neko Case, Brian Blade and members of The Decemberists and My Morning Jacket. Veirs sings not only of mid-winter suns, white blossoming cherry trees and melting ice, but also suicide, gun violence and war. She weaves threads of old folk songs including “Motherless Children” as well as stories of folk-art hero Howard Finster and jazz harpist Alice Coltrane. “I think of this record as a tapestry where disparate elements come together and are stronger and more lovely as a result,” says Veirs. Veirs was eight months pregnant with her second child during the recording; she says her experience as a mother brought about some of the more beautiful and painful songs. “I’m haunted by the idea that something terrible could happen to my kids but that fear pushes me to embrace the moment. This record is an exploration of extremes – deep, dark suffering and intense, compassionate love.”

In early 2013, venerable indie label Kill Rock Stars announced Kurt as the first comedy signing for the label. Kurt’s debut album How Do I Land?, recorded live at packed rock clubs in Seattle and Portland. The album’s name comes from Kurt’s “Cloud Project” in which he raised $6k on Kickstarter and hired a pilot to write the words “How Do I Land?” across the LA sky. The resulting skywriting images went viral. He wrote or co-wrote with Daniel Rossen many of the group's best known songs, including "No One Does it Like You," "Teenagers," "While We're Young," and "Herringbone." Their last album, In Ear Park, was awarded "Best New Music" by Pitchfork Media and made The New York Times' year-end top ten list. Golden Suits is Nicolaus' first project working alone. It was inspired by a strange year that saw him get chased out of an apartment by a rat infestation, go through a painful breakup, travel to Germany to learn about his grandfather's death in WWII, go broke, and lose forty pounds. Throughout that chaotic time, he became obsessed with a book of short stories by the fiction writer John Cheever, and started writing songs that blended his own experiences with fragments from the book (the name "Golden Suits" is a reference to the final line of a Cheever story). The result is a collection of ten songs that combine nostalgia, sentimentality, skewed references to a book about suburban marriage in the 1950s, personal confessions and abstract non-sequitors that take a shot at the sublime.

Kissaway Trail Breach

NATIONAL release date CD/LP: 08.20.2013 Formed in Denmark in 2005, Kissaway Trail initially consisted of five members. Led by the songwriting of guitar players and vocalists Søren Corneliussen and Thomas Fagerlund, the band fused the fiery atonal rock of acts such as the Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana with the ethereal thump of the Flaming Lips and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. The result was two well-received records – 2007’s self-titled debut and 2010’s Sleep Mountain – that consolidated their reputation as a band to watch. Extensive touring established their live rep, and the group seemed poised to make their third, crucial album. Then, everything exploded, as tensions within the band’s direction hastened the departure of two of the five members. By 2012, the remaining three – Corneliussen, Hasse Mydtskov on drums, and singer and guitar player Thomas Fagerlund – had spent time getting to know each other and their music again, and headed into the studio fresh, excited, and rejuvenated. “With this new unity,” says Mydtskov, “we were able to be more open with each other, more vulnerable, and really find out what we wanted to do. And what we wanted to do was much more straight ahead than the first two records, more aggressive, more in-your-face.” And how. Breach is a statement of sharp-angled, dreamy pop-rock purpose. Right from the first lines of the opening track, “Tell the Truth,” you can hear a more confessional, stripped-down sound that reflects the trio’s through-the-tempest experiences of the past three years. Or take, for example, a track like “The Springsteen Implosion,” which combines the chugging atonality of Daydream Nation-era Sonic Youth with the vocal heroics and sonic scope of U2. At the same time, tracks like the haunted “Beauty Still Rebels” show Breach’s spirit of experimentation, with a sensibility as much Bowie as Jesus and Mary Chain.

Extra drums kick in after 15 minutes, courtesy of Wayne again, riding the wave home.The basic track was recorded to cassette on Price’s walkman, and slowly added to and built up over the course of two years. It is one of Price’s most ambitious and triumphant creations yet. k2o was recorded in Bristol, London, Memphis, and on the Italian shoreline over the course of three years using his dependable Fender Mustang, microkorg, and as much fuzz as he could gather. Mountains Mountains Mountains was first released on the Catsup Plate label in 2008 in an edition of only 500 copies, and was Mountains’ first album released on a label other than the band’s Appastaartje label. The pieces were recorded during the duo’s early years, between 2005-07, demonstrating that Mountains emerged as a fully formed entity. Opener “The Whale Years” was recorded and improvised in 2005 in a hotel room in Georgia on a night off mid-way through their first ever US tour, while “Millions of Time” and “Hive” originally appeared on a 3” CDr sold during that same tour. “Nest” was recorded in NYC in late 2007. Koen Holtkamp describes Mountains Mountains Mountains’ legacy thusly: “One thing that strikes me on listening back 5 or so years later is both how different and similar it sounds to what we are currently doing. While these pieces are clearly more minimal and intimate on some level and our technical approach has changed somewhat, the dynamics between the acoustic and electronic elements remain fairly consistent throughout our releases. Which is something we’ve been engaged with from the beginning and part of what defines us as a band.” The record’s artwork mirrors the band’s ability to create music that encourages personal revelation through universal consciousness: “We made sign up sheets with instructions for people to right the word Mountains which we had by the door at a few of our shows and left in a couple record stores in NY. Each ‘signature’ is in a unique handwriting by a different person, but all writing the same word.” This reissue features an inverted color scheme and contains a download card for the first time. Mountains Mountains Mountains is an integral part in the band’s legacy, and lends insight into the band’s development into one of the most critically regarded experimental acts of the past decade.

tlapa the odeon remixes It’s something of tradition for Tosca to get their albums remixed. Indeed, they once released a record comprised entirely of 13 mixes of one song, 2002’s ‘Different Tastes Of Honey’, variations on ‘Honey’ from 1999’s ‘Suzuki’. It’s a way of keeping things fresh, injecting some uncertainty into proceedings, knocking things out of balance in order to check how they should be re-aligned. The first person the pair approached was New York producer Brendan Moeller, who remixed ‘Bonjour’, turning it into a muted soundscape of drifting synths and keening strings that slowly warms as a bubbling riff fades in. The choice of remixer for ‘Stuttgart’ was a case of obvious connections. The track already had a bit of a Latin feel thanks to guest Lucas Santtana from Brazil. Of course, Dorfmeister is an accomplished remixer himself, so it would have been remiss not get involved. Other reworks come from Silver City, two guys from from Buenos Aires who live in London. They apply an ’80s twist to ‘Johnny Waters’. LTJ Experience, an alter ego on Italian producer Luca Trevisi from Bologna, turns in an atmospheric interpretation of ‘Meixner’. Perhaps the most unusual remix is AFG’s version of ‘Cavallo’, which sees spoken word passages thrust to the fore. “That’s definitely the most leftfield,” agrees Dorfmeister. If ‘Odeon’ was the sound of a band at the top of their game, still relevant after two decades, then the remix album shows they’re still on top of the music scene, pulling together well-judged names, old and new, to give their distinctive sound an equally distinctive twist.

spraying into a sink to anchor one of his beats. The Star Eyed Condition is chameleonic effort in the impossible to pin down trajectory of Loden's career. The Belgian-based producer and musician has already proven his facility for glassy disco and droning ambient on his 2005 debut Valeen Hope, and glitchy hip-hop via his work with Sole and Thirsty Fish. On his new album, Koks goes even further beyond his already drawn boundaries. There's a touch of robo-electro to tracks like "Optimist Never Cries" and "Sanesserarian" (a play on the phrase "ça ne sert a rien" or "it is useless"). He brings the ghostly sounds of German electronic pop into the dirtiest of hip-hop beats. And on his collaboration with rhymer Doseone, "Future Confetti," he gets lost in a psychedelic wilderness worthy of DJ Danger Mouse. To bring this new collection to bear, Koks tapped a number of his friends on their shoulders, asking them to provide rhymes and melodies to these tracks. Busdriver jumps in the aforementioned sink spray track "About Busdriver With Colors," slinking through the acid techno swirl. And collaborator Sole makes an appearance on the album closer "A Letter to a Future Kid," laying his reflectively calm rhymes atop a slowly unfolding dreamlike beat.

Koks says, "I love being completely blown away by a record and just wanting to live inside of it." Loden is not alone in that idea, but what may surprise him to know is that there are going to be plenty of listeners out there lining up to take up residence inside of The Star Eyed Condition. DATE:
