ON TOUR DVD
For 19 years, critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Mark Kozelek has toured solo and as front man of both Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon. Until now, he has never given filmmakers access into his life on the road. Filmed during portions of Mark Kozelek’s European and North American tours of 2010 and 2011, this is a rare glimpse into Mark’s backstage areas and passenger seat travels. Shot in black and white, this dynamic film captures the fast paced travel of a singer on a solo-acoustic journey, giving viewers an inspirational look at its high points, and also a stark view of its mundane realities. Footage includes an intimate version of 'Katy Song' performed at Sant'Ambrogio Church in Bologna, a mesmerizing 'Half Moon Bay' performed in Switzerland, and a flamenco-flourished 'Third and Seneca' filmed in a Copenhagen hotel room. The film’s soundtrack includes album tracks, concert recordings, hotel room performances, and a score written and performed by Mark Kozelek. MATT PAPA
As an artist who mostly isn't interested in simply making music for music's sake, Papa writes songs that center around God's word and doesn't consider his job done until the lyrics have taken permanent residence in a listener's gray matter. "Songs are sermons people remember" Papa says. "I often don't remember a sermon I heard yesterday, let alone a year ago, but with songs, there's a hook, and people remember it. So that's why I want to write with Scripture. I don't want to waste time." Indeed Papa has stayed true to that belief with the release of his highly anticipated follow up to his 2009 release“Your Kingdom Come” entitled“This Changes Everything” due in stores August 2, 2011.

SOLE
AND THE SKYRIDER BAND
HELLO CRUEL WORLD
FFINC027 CD/LP : SOLE AND THE SKYRIDER BAND HELLO CRUEL WORLD RELEASE DATE: JULY 19, 2011 On Hello Cruel World, Sole aka Tim Holland returns with the Skyrider Band for his first full length since the split with Anticon, and his third album with the Skyrider Band. While much was made of Sole leaving the Anticon empire he helped create, there's a refreshing, new found confidence and focus not seen since his now-classic albums Selling Live Water and Bottle of Humans. On Hello Cruel World sees Sole has assembled an army of the most exciting voices in indie culture to be apart of the new record, recruiting everyone from LILBTHEBASEDGOD, Xiu Xiu, Pictureplane, Sage Francis, Ceschi, and more, to create a pretty stunning tapestry that is a new high water mark in Sole's creative output. The album drops July 19th on cd, vinyl, and digital via Fake Four Inc., with the European release being handled by Equinox Records. Perhaps even more interesting, listeners will notice that Sole has adopted the most deliberate flow of his career--abandoning the freewheeling, hyper-timed assaults of his earlier work in favor of a biting clarity and all around accessibility. The record draws on the wealth of his newly found freedom, tapping into the positivity and ethics of a DIY tradition he has always known and embraced throughout his career - transforming his past cynicism into a call to arms and personal empowerment. The Skyrider Band itself has been similarly transformed; trading in their dense soundscapes and organic touchstones for an impeccable attention to detail and more studio-centric productions. On Sole and the Skyrider Band's last record, Plastique, Sole claimed, “I've been digging my grave since age 15.” Since then, he's been hard at work converting his grave into trenches that span from California to Barcelona, and the bottom of the ocean to the moon. Hello Cruel World occupies these trenches, steadfastly refusing to be flushed into a niche.

WILLIAM MICHAEL DILLON
“BLACK ROBES AND LAWYERS” ON SALE 8.16.11
Framed for a murder he did not commit, William Michael Dillon was sentenced to life in prison. While in prison, Dillon got a job helping to create a prison music room. He ordered instruments and equipment, and, with the help of fellow inmates, Dillon learned to play guitar. Primarily, though, he sang country and rock tunes with other players. He also started writing songs — on the backs of official notices, on money receipts, on loose sheets of paper he'd pick up from the library. "I've used everything, I think," he said. I've written a song on toilet paper."

On November 18, 2008, after DNA evidence cleared Dillon of any wrongdoing, a judge dropped the charges against him and Willliam Dillon walked out of prison a free man, with hundreds of songs and a story to tell. Part Johnny Cash and part Tom Waits, Dillon will tell that story through a collection of songs entitled “Black Robes and Lawyers” released on his own Flying Free Productions record label. Dillon’s story has already caught the attention of the national media as he’s been featured on CNN, Good Morning America and the Today Show. Artist: Battles Title: My Machines ft. Gary Numan 8.16.2011 WRP9321
“‘My Machines’ is a triumphant moment, an experimental outburst both ingenious and accessible” – SPIN BATTLES’ “My Machines,” featuring synth-pop pioneer Gary Numan, is available as a 12” colored vinyl single August 16th via Warp Records. The track—off of the band’s critically acclaimed sophomore record Gloss Drop (available now on Warp Records)—has been hailed by NME as “propelled on stern, piston drums, pointillistic guitar notes scattering like frightened crickets.” Numan notes that “working with Battles was an easy choice for me. They have a unique approach to making music and a clear idea of what they want. They are inventive, adventurous, unpredictable and I’m proud to be involved.” The single also includes non-album track “A.M. Gestalt" as the B-side.

YELLOW OSTRICH THE MISTRESS
bark120 CD
STREET DATE: AUGUST 16, 2011
Barsuk Records is pleased to announce that Brooklyn, NY trio Yellow Ostrich has joined the Barsuk family. Their Barsuk debut, The Mistress, will be released nationally on August 16th, 2011.
TRACKLISTING 1. I Think U Are Great 2. WHALE 3. Hate Me Soon 4. Hold On 5. Libraries 6. Hahahaohhoho 7. I'll Run 8. Campaign 9. Mary 10. Slow Paddle BONUS TRACKS 11. Bread 12. Fog 13. Mary (alternate)
The focal point of Yellow Ostrich's magnificent debut The Mistress is Wisconsin native Alex Schaaf's voice. On The Mistress it gets looped and layered, stretched and manipulated; it's stacked up several high and, most often, it's used as an instrument, fleshing out the empty spaces in his bare, searching songs. The album was originally recorded (largely by Schaaf himself with occasional help from a few friends) and given very limited release online for free via his Bandcamp site before he hooked up with now-fulltime bandmates Jon Natchez (bass, horns, vocals) and Michael Tapper (drums, vocals) in New York.
MARKETING NOTES • The Mistress is partially re-recorded and fully re-mastered with the addition of 3 new tracks!

The latest artist to be championed by Jason Swinscoe’s Motion Audio imprint will be familiar to fans of The Cinematic Orchestra. Brooklyn-based L.D. Brown and AKA Grey Reverend met Swinscoe shortly after the Cinematics main-man relocated to NYC and started going to the coffee shop run by Brown’s sister for his hot caffeinated beverages. When Swinscoe heard some of Brown’s material he was impressed by it and they met up. Eventually, he asked the Reverend to supply a cover version of “To Build A Home.” Swinscoe liked the resulting “mix” so much that Grey Reverend began to tour with TCO, singing with them and performing his own material in support. Now, four years on, Brown releases his first album, “Of The Days,” with Swinscoe’s new label. Brown performs his songs primarily as a soloist, using acoustic guitar and voice to convey his music to his audience. The devilish detail within the songs create flashes of allegory in which familiar sentiments simultaneously comfort and unnerve the senses. Compelling and positively ambiguous, with reverence for the grey, undefined areas of style, his songs are unconcerned with musical or social expectations. They sit completely outside of time and fashion, the beauty and simplicity of his voice enough to carry them. TRACKLISTING: 1. Altruistic Holiday 2. Walk The Same 3. One By One 4. Forsake 5. Boats makes music songs in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Sometimes their songs are about fictional performing duos who have holes in their bodies and/or have a belief that they will one day give birth to a flock of birds. Sometimes they are about winning the Superbowl and finding buried treasure. Often they are about failure and death. A noisy indiepop band with high-end hopes but low-end equipment, Mat Klachefsky's bizarre vocal chords mixed with his infectiously catchy pop songs and boundless energy have been freaking out audiences ever since they released their critically acclaimed first album "Intercontinental Champion" to local audiences in October 2007. Since then they have embarked on several North American tours, played packed houses at SXSW, NXNE, Pop Montreal, Halifax Pop Explosion and Sled Island, and charted solidly all across Canada. Cannonballs, Cannonballs was recorded over several hot summer days in Winnipeg at Prairie Recording Studio by Ryan McVeigh (Hot Panda) and Mixed by Cam Leoppky and Shawn Dealey (The Weakerthans). The band did most takes in their underwear. Pizza was provided.
Press Quotes:
l
“The guitar sound borrows its fair share of influence from indie-pop staples like Built to Spill and Modest Mouse; and the synth sounds reflect a love for 80s new wave. Still, some folk undertones and cheerful vocal harmonies are thrown into the mix to give the sound a personality of its own.” – Cerebral Pop Review “…loaded to the brim with Klachefskyʼs stream-of-consciousness lyrics lifted to even odder heights courtesy of his cartoon-like vocals and clattery rhythms. His main aide-de-camp, Ashley Roch, delves even deeper into her arsenal of distinctive keyboard sounds and every track will have you wondering how some particular electronic whistle, buzz or howl was created.” – Winnipeg Free Press

April 10th, 2011 — Portland, Oregon — The Parson Red Heads have signed to The Arena Rock Recording Company and are set to release their anticipated new album, Yearling, August 16th. The 11-track album was produced by sometimes-band-mate Raymond Richards at Red Rockets Glare (Los Angeles CA) and by Chris Stamey, of legendary Southern jangle-pop band, The dB’s, at Mitch Easter’s Fidelitorium Studios (Kernersville, NC); and Yearling was mixed by Stamey at Modern Recording (Chapel Hill, NC). ‘The title of the new record ‘Yearling’ has all sorts of meanings’, says singer Evan Parsons. ‘For us…with this album…the obvious is that the record took between one and two years to make (see: definition of ‘yearling’) but it means much more than that. The collection of songs tell stories about learning as you go, moving on when you finally realize you can’t turn back and loving people when you can. It’s a record about growing up made by a band that’s growing up (and still are!). The songs and messages are very important to us, as are the performances and memories we have of the creation of this album. We consider it a big step for us, although one step of many, but an important one nonetheless.’

Since the days of Black Sabbath, the promise of heavy rock music has been this: that a perfect series of riffs, reinforced by a tightly-wound rhythmic unit, can deliver very real psychedelic effects, forcibly altering one's conscious state of being. Though post-modern doomsters have toyed with elements of the formula (witness: Earth, Melvins, Isis, etc), the principle importance of the mono-riff has remained intact. World Class, the debut full-length from North Carolina's Caltrop, is wildly -- even transcendently successful because the band's exhilarating performances are rooted in the awareness that their music has an uncanny, historically potent power. Indeed, Caltrop's impeccable arrangements deliberately suggest a sort of ascendant scaffolding, the very foundation necessary for the audacious work of spiritual transformation. By any measure, Caltrop's musical agenda is a daunting one. But the band's essence has been distilled -through the calculated ambition of experience -- into a pure, uncompromising force of nature. Today, there is no stopping them. Caltrop's members -- Sam Taylor (guitar, vox), Murat Dirlik (bass, vox), Adam Nolton (guitar), and John Crouch (drums) -- cut their teeth over the past decade in a cadre of North Carolina's hardest hitting combos (Horseback, El Sucio, Hazerai, Pegasus, Country Bears), and their work in those bands has paid off with impressive chops and an almost impossible tightness. It is no surprise, then, that Caltrop's achievements have become noted internationally: Of their eponymous EP (self-released in 2006), Teardrop Explodes' glam-guy turned krautrock-expert turned shaman Julian Cope says, "These gentlemen unfold into areas only the most confident of motherfuckers dare take their shit. And while the drumming is truly something else, the hugely varied guitar playing sways from bilious, cyclical twin lead riffology to ‘Eruption’-style Edward Van Halen-isms of the highest quality … Yowzah!" We couldn't have said it better ourselves. Enjoy! Genres: Psychedelic, Sludge/Doom Metal, Progressive Rock, Stoner Rock, Blues/Southern Rock RIYL: Sleep, Mastodon, Melvins, Harvey Milk, Black Sabbath, Allman Brothers, Slint, Shellac, Jimi Hendrix Praise: “Arguably the best full-length album released by any band in this state this year. … Caltrop rebuilds blues-based heavy metal with big eyes focused through ambition and musical maneuvers carved in perfection.” -- Independent Weekly "48-minutes of bizarre harmonies served over a bed of ever-shifting, ever-smoking gasoline riffery from the ripped backsides of Hell. Caltrop navigate between Harvey Milk and the Melvins, via Viaje A800 and power trio-period Grand Funk Railroad to fascinating effect." -- Julian Cope, Head Heritage “There’s no pretense in what Caltrop does to being sludge, or stoner, or whatever. They just play the heavy tones they want to hear. That comes through on World Class, and so, the record every bit lives up to its name.” -- The Obelisk

Cosmic American four-piece Filthybird has had an busy year, migrating from Greensboro, North Carolina, to the Triangle, opening a guitar repair shop in downtown Graham (Fret Sounds), and putting the finishing touches on their brilliant new full-length record, Songs for Other People. The follow-up to the lauded Southern Skies, Filthybird's latest record reveals an astounding depth, effectively marrying the lilting vocal melodies of Renee Mendoza (Ashrae Fax) to her husband Brian Haran's (Glenn Branca Orchestra, LaMonte Young projects, Viridian) layered guitar atmospherics. Anchored by Michael Duehring and Otto Hauser’s (Vetiver, Bright Back Morning Light, Espers) powerfully inventive rhythm section, these songs are both soulful and dreamy, familiar and fresh. Lush, breezy and cinematic arrangements may recall the best moments of Gram Parsons, Jefferson Airplane, Roky Erikson and Chris Bell, but this band is unique, reassembling the most colorful fragments of a mythic American music into something entirely new. Filthybird’s current lineup includes Jim Bob Aiken on drums. Genres: Americana, Indie Rock, Psychedelic, Rock, Folk-Rock, Pop RIYL: Gram Parsons, Jefferson Airplane, Roky Erikson, Big Star, Joni Mitchell, Brian Eno Praise for Songs for Other People (2010) “It’d be a simple and not wholly unfounded claim to say that Renee Mendoza’s voice carries the day on Filthybird’s excellent sophomore record, Songs for Other People. Her singing can surge with power or crack with a sweet frailty, and she’s never bogged down by affectation. However, as strong as Mendoza is, Filthybird is a full-band effort, each solid piece made sturdier by the next.” -Popmatters “The band's core is Renee Mendoza, a Texas born and bred guitarist and singer/songwriter with a big, open, expressive voice that inhabits its own unique musical space. She has the powerful yet understated delivery of a folk singer, and a literary turn of phrase that never calls attention to itself. Guitarist Brian Haran, her husband, has played in noise rock bands with Glenn Branca and LaMonte Young, but his approach here is minimal and melodic … The music is atmospheric, suggesting wide-open emotional and geographical spaces” -- Allmusic “This is not only one of the best albums of the year locally, it’s one of the best anywhere.” -- Triangle Music Praise for Southern Skies (2007) "There's a rich swirl of New South mystique hidden in Greensboro's Filthybird, especially through frontwoman Renee Mendoza. Her songwriting—a collagist's reflection on the toils of love and life—proclaims a naiveté rung through resilience and tenacity … Filthybird moans in textural splendor until they climb into big, clanging rock crescendos, free and emphatic and strong. The band's debut, Southern Skies, is one of the best 10 records you'll hear from this state all year, guaranteed." -- The Independent

GENRE : POP/ROCK FILE UNDER: “T” Tunnels Release Date: August 16, 2011 NO EXPORT TRACK LISTING: For several years, Tunnels has been the moniker for the solo output of Nicholas Bindeman. Over time Bindeman’s sound has evolved from the slow, breathing landscapes of his earlier ambient/drone releases (Colour Seance, Vexations) to completely fried-out bedroom psych explorations (Astral Collage, In Between Dreams). Throughout these releases he has been committed to an expanding array of music based on sounds invoked from a wide open, psychedelic dream state more akin to Angus Maclise. Rarely has he adhered to any formal song structure, as is also evident with his role in bands Eternal Tapestry and Jackie-O Motherfucker. In the spring of 2008, Bindeman began playing live sets singing over a four track recorder. His initial output, like a dirtier, playful Suicide, with backing tracks acting as vehicles for live exploration. Bindeman would often go into a frenzied state, mumbling and slurring through slapdash songs. These performances gradually evolved into more cohesive and clean music and recording became the focus of the project, writing material through the recording process and eventually falling victim to the lure of pop. The Blackout delves into a world of sound unheard of on any prior Tunnels release as Bindeman steps away from the heady guitar wizardry of Eternal Tapestry to craft a pulsing and dark record steeped in cold dread with a pop sheen. Bass lines, often the centerpiece of the song, play alongside glistening, glass slipper synths and jagged guitars, seeping like silver lined shadows into disaffected vocal incantations. Drawing on a disparate palate of sounds from various facets of electronic music, his version of a new cold wave is a sound both novel and infectious. Taking after synth pop pioneers such as Charles de Goal and Crash Course in Science, with a hint of Throbbing Gristle, The Blackout still manages to resonate with the new. Many songs revolve around sampled sources which Bindeman then collages together to create the framework for any given piece. For example, opener “Crystal Arms” draws it’s slightly off kilter pulse from a Laurie Anderson performance in which she sports a pair of contact mic’d sun glasses which pick up the vibrations of her fists pounding on her skull. With these fractured and psychedelic tones, Tunnels join the ranks of Silk Flowers, Gary War, and others that call labels like Not Not Fun and Sacred Bones home, all the while taking shards of the dark ‘80s pop sound reminiscent of Gary Numan and The Cure, and reconfiguring them for the underground.

This release does not simply feature Roots Manuva on vocals but is more a collaboration between the two producers. In fact, it was Rodney’s original demo that inspired Toddla to mould it into this very version for his album, naturally with Rodney’s stamp of approval. Continuing work on the demo resulted in Rodney’s own version which will also appear as track two on the single package along with a wealth of remixes including one from Sebastian and the legend that is Andrew Weatherall. The Roots Manuva version will also feature on his fifth studio album, ‘4everevolution’ later in the year. This unique release displays the different interpretations borne from the same demo and displays the mutual appreciation between these two highly respected and innovative UK artists.

Everyone witters on about the latest female singer-songwriter to plop off the major label production line but the truth is this: most of them sound the same. Weak re-treads of classic soul or classic folk or classic this or that. As a whole, people are more interested in how they look than whether they have anything to say, or any way to say it. Please welcome, then, Elan Tamara, who genuinely sounds like no one else. Fascinated by Balinese Gamelan and Steve Reich, she makes music as uncategorisable, as heartfelt and beautifully otherworldly as anything you’re likely to hear. Over two EPs she has carved out a space so unique and unclassifiable that people have fallen back on namechecking other female artists with a distinctive aesthetic and outlook – Kate Bush, Bjork, Joanna Newsom and their ilk. Needless to say, she doesn’t sound like them, either. Her third EP, her first with Big Dada, shows Tamara developing her songwriting craft to new heights. With a voice that can be smooth and calming or raging and hurt, Tamara pulls long vocal lines and next level harmonies over the syncopated minimalism of her piano playing. This base is augmented by the playing of her band. The whole is then stretched and moulded into new shapes by up-and-coming producer Kwes (DELS, The Invisible, The XX, and now of Warp Records). The result is some of the most exciting, individual music around, music which deserves and rewards repeated listens and signals the arrival of a major new talent. Listen…

FORMAT - CD/ LP LABEL - Dirty Water Club UPC - CD: 5023903262363 / LP: 5023903262356 CATALOG # - CD : DWC1049CD / LP: DWC1049LP LIST PRICE - CD : $17.99 / LP: $30.99 There‟s a huge number of great bands in Japan right now and one of the best is right here, right now on Dirty Water Records. With a sound that‟s tough, breakneck yet soulful, there‟s also real proper tunes coming from this trio. Yeah, this is freaked-out 100mph fuzzbucket guitar garage rock‟n‟roll, and all executed with more than the usual amount of frenziedly primitive zeal, but it‟s all delivered by people who actually know what they‟re doing, who know how to play their instruments. This is no thrashing around garage-punk-bynumbers. A review of their debut album (on Irish-based label Motor Sounds) said: “Now, with most garage bands you get the impression that they suffer from a fondness for music equipment porn. Gotta get the right pedals, the right sound, the right mixing desk . . . not these guys. This is clearly a band with some amps, some instruments and a volume control set to loud. There‟s bleed all over the place, the vocals are scratchy (in a punching-the -air way) and the drummer is tight‟n‟loose. This band is fuggin‟ ace. Not only that, but they‟re clearly skilled musicians . . . not in a prog way of course . . that wouldn‟t do. But the solos that leap outta each song could easily come from a vintage Yardbirds LP.” Their debut single on Dirty Water, “Do What‟s Right By You”, is a big crunchy blues punk stomp that got the old garage-rock fans as well as indie kids new to real rock‟n‟roll foaming at the mouth. A truly raucous romp of frenziedly frazzled greasy rhythm‟n‟blues wailing racket that cuts through all other current bands like a razor blade through butter. With the sheer number of great bands coming out the Land of the Rising Sun right now, we could be seeing all things Japanese becoming the next big thing. You‟d do well to jump on board now, grab your cool cred points, and be able to say, “We told you about „em first!”
THE MASONICS - In Your Night of Dreams...and Other Foreboding Pleasures
FORMAT - CD/LP LABEL - Dirty Water Club UPC - CD: 5023903262769 / LP: 5023903262752 CATALOG # - CD: DWC1051CD / LP: DWC1051LP LIST PRICE - CD $17.99 / LP: $21.99
Something of a garage-rock‟n‟roll supergroup, The Masonics are a winning combination – featuring musicians who have done time in such legendary groups as the Milkshakes, Pop Rivets, Wildebeests, Kaisers, Headcoats, Del Monas, and more (not bad, seeing as there‟s only three of ‟em – namely, Mickey Hampshire, Bruce Brand and John Gibbs.) Masters of the Medway beat made famous by Mr Billy Childish, this is the group that should be the more famous one – with their better songs and better musicianship. Bruce played alongside Childish in the Pop Rivets back in the late 1970s and he and Mickey were both in the Milkshakes (in fact, it was actually Mickey & the Milkshakes originally!). Anyone who has even a passing interest in garage and beat music of the last 25 years will have come across the names of the bands in which the three members of the devilishly stylish Masonics have spent time. And, combining their previous bands‟ sixties beat, US garage and instrumental styling with a punk rock attitude, this is a group that pays attention to detail, with a talent for song-writing coming to the fore. Singer/guitarist Micky Hampshire possesses a merciless instinct for touching, simple, timeless rock‟n‟roll melodies and lyrics. The band performs with verve and precision, on record and on stage, always giving their followers their money‟s worth. Bruce Brand pounds the traps like it could save your life – and sometimes I believe it very well could! John Gibbs twangs the bass strings with a gut instinct, taking you into a groove with grit and gumption. Eight albums down the line The Masonics remain more hard-hitting and vital than any group of teenage hopefuls on the scene – of that there‟s no doubt.
Matthew Friedberger Cut It Out Thrill - 262 D LP $15.99 BOX LOT LP 30 Vinyl is non-returnable
*90377-CGCEBe
GENRE : POP/ROCK FILE UNDER: “F” Friedberger, Matthew “F” Fiery Furnaces, The Cut It Out is the fourth album released in Matthew Friedberger’s 2011 six album series Solos. Cut It Out was made with drums and machines that play drums and things which can be made to sound like drums. Matt’s vocals are also present. “Matt” is Rock-n-Roll musician and songwriter Matthew Friedberger, a Chicagoan. Mr. Friedberger considers R-n-R an anti-vocational sphere of endeavor, as is obvious from its epithet, so spelled, Q.E.D. Therefore a C.V. is drastically inappropriate. But or so: since 2003, Friedberger has released eight albums with the band he runs with his sister Eleanor, The Fiery Furnaces. The band is planning to record its ninth album before Christmas upcoming. Perhaps the group’s catchiest and most aggressive effort to date, arranged as a concerto for Drum Kit and String Orchestra, this as yet untitled effort may contain such songs as “I met the Queen of the Night in the daytime”, “I was so confused”, “The City of the Sun”, “As insufficient as an Eskimo’s kimono”. And many more. His six record set, Solos in which he plays only a single given instrument per album (though not necessarily the same actual individual example of the single given instrument), is designed to illustrate the following Cretan-Lacedaemonian principle. Every group of instruments against every other group of instruments; every instrument against every other instrument; and especially, every instrument against itself, all alone. See Laws, Book 1, 626 d. This idea jibes quite well with certain notions that have often been thought constitutively American, no doubt unfortunately. Friedberger thinks it therefore illuminating to apply this principle to such a pre-eminently American music as the aforementioned R-n-R. Despite the fact that this application is no doubt already ongoing. Mr. Friedberger will again be scoring the Guggenheim’s production of Rob Pruitt presents: The Art Awards, an awards event and performance piece conceived and co-ordinated by the artist Rob Pruitt. This second annual event will take place in New York at Webster Hall on December 9th. The music this year will refer to Webster Hall’s history of various like amusements, up to and including its period as The Ritz. But no further. Mr. Friedberger is at work on a book called The Progressive Use of Popular Culture 1: Music. In this work, about the same length as Jason Alexander’s non-existent Acting without Acting, he attempts to advance--or exaggerate--the egalitarian potential of the irreducibly esoteric nature of the popular arts. He considers Rock-n-Roll, or Rock ‘n Roll, or Rock, or This Thing, to be the Queen, or King, or Tyrant of Indeterminate Gender, of the Popular Arts. The word Tyrant in the last sentence is meant to include a sense of necessary illegitimacy.

(Part Of The June Cargo Collective) There's only thing you can bank on when you're confronted with Las Kellies: to expect the unexpected. From the raw rock & roll of their 2007 debut 'Shaking Dog' - described by the great Everett True as "entirely ace" - to the Devo and ESG influenced sound of 2009's follow-up 'Kalimera', this Argentinian three-piece have carved out a reputation for ripping up the form-book, delving into their box of magic tricks and serving up something entirely different. And so it is again on their third album 'Kellies': whether it's embracing what they term as their "new sound" of groove-laden and irresistibly catchy post-punk or recruiting reggae legend Dennis Bovell to help in the studio, it's the sound of a band who always keep things fresh. 'Prince In Blue' kicks things of with its post-punk riffs and tongue-in-cheek barbs. Potential suitors, beware: no nice boys are ever going to capture these girls' hearts. "You've been treating me just too well/ Too much pressure, I'm going to hell," they taunt, brushing unwanted attention away. 'Keep The Horse', meanwhile, flippantly recounts the tale of a divvying up of marital assets ("Charlie will be his/ Debbie will be hers") and gossiping acquaintances ("Your rent is in arrears/ And your neighbours are all ears") over a nagging helter-skelter riff that's reminiscent of fellow South American's CSS. On 'Bling Bling', they eye up your wallet size before considering romance ("I'm a bounty hunter, looking for your gold"), while 'Erase You' is a series of stinging retorts to a former paramour: "I'm gonna erase you, just like a drawing/ Erase you, flush you like my toilet". Don't make any mistake, though: despite their love for frivolous wordplay (in both English and the language of their native Argentina, Spanish) and light-hearted approach to love, there's nothing lightweight about 'Kellies'. As drummer Sil Kelly says, "This album is more 'serious' than the others". Whether it's the sunny guitars of 'Erase You' or the brilliantly cheesy instrumental score of 'Bife Dos', this is their most accomplished sound yet. Sometimes, words aren't even necessary: 'Adventure' tosses lyrics aside for a rumbling, ominous bass riff, stabbing echoes of guitar and clacking drums, while there's only haunted shrieking on 'Cous Cous' to accompany the death-rattle sound effects to accompany the swashbuckling score. Since meeting at a gig in Buenos Airies in 2005, borrowing their friend's instruments and deciding to form a band, Las Kellies - comprised of Ceci Kelly (guitar and vocals), Betty Kelly (bass and vocals) and Sil Kelly (drums and vocals) - have never been afraid of change. 'Kellies' is testament to that: a tight and taut mixture of cumbia, dub and post-punk. There's no rehashing of conquered ground: instead, old sounds are given a new twist, and horizons are expanded once again. As Sil recently said: "Every album provides us with a new way." And every time Las Kellies find a new way, it's in a direction that you definitely should be following in... Las Kellies 2011 Tracklisting : 1. Prince In Blue 2. Keep The Horse 3. Bling Bling 4. (Part Of The June Cargo Collective) Did you know that Ryan Driver has a drink named after him? Yeah, it's called Rye and Driver - which is ostensibly a screwdriver with a shot of Canadian rye - and despite the fact that the drink was neither named nor conceived by him, it still speaks volumes of his unique and confounding legacy. Although the thought of this drink that combines vodka and rye is at first a little weird, the result is quite tasteful and it's apropos that such a drink should be named after such a person. Having known Ryan for a few years now, I just heard of and tried this drink last week for the first time. If you've had the pleasure of spending time in Mr. Driver's company or attended one of his shows in any one of his many bands - the Silt, the Reveries, Blah Blah 666 and his own Ryan Driver Quartet, too name a few - you will know that what he brings to the table is something implacable, even enigmatic... And although the genre of music performed spans a slew of old-time and contemporary genres and moods - from folk to free jazz, bombast to balladry - Ryan's presence is always assured and deftly considered, never pedestrian. With his new album Who's Breathing?, Ryan showcases some of his new songs which, not unlike the drink that's named after him, are both eclectic and sweetly intoxicating. The first half is a top-heavy, bleary-eyed amble through the metaphysical country moves made familiar through his work in The Silt. Central to these songs is Ryan's heady, almost surrealist lyrics, which traipse commonplace folk themes on the slant and uneven ground of a funhouse. Here his way with a turn of phrase demonstrates its dexterity amid slinking caterpillar accompaniments (including a rest stopstyle pedal steel and even an English horn pilfered from the AM waves). The second half assumes the mentalist lounge approach, that particular sound not unfamiliar to those who attend the monthly Ryan Driver Quartet appearances at the Tranzac bar in Toronto. Mr. Driver's own brand of smoky, downcast jazz meanders in a slack void between half-speed piano bar exercises and subterranean psychedelia cast in twilight. On piano, Ryan is accompanied primarily by bass, drums, and Martin Arnold's peculiar, intuitive guitar playing. But, as with the first half, it is Ryan's song writing that takes centre stage; teeming with double-meanings and verbal loopholes, excavating the alien and quietly phosphorescent landscape of the soul. It is with immense love that this cycle of songs is transmitted to you over bleating pastures and through the blear of rain and sleet. An album for almost all occasions and another landmark in Ryan's unchartered career. Andrew Zukerman , August 2010. Tracklisting: 1. Dead End Street 2. Am I Still Too Late? 3. Everything Must Spin 4. Tell Me True 5. Blue Skies Don’t Care 6. It’s Tulip Season 7. Don’t Want To Leave You Without You 8. Whether They Like It Or Not 9. When Now Turns To Never 10. On A Beautiful Night Like Tomorrow

SLOAN THE DOUBLE CROSS
To be featured on NPR’s All Things Considered and The Onion’s A/V - Undercover Series “…a succinct set of tunes that seamlessly blend the sensibilities of the band's four distinct songwriters… the perfect balance of fist-pumping riff rockers and classy formalist pop.”- Rolling Stone “…an unapologetic celebration of Sloandom, and a safe place for those who believe good dual-guitar breaks - like the ones on the stomping ‘Unkind’- are the reason why we’re here on Earth.” - The Onion

SONDRE LERCHE S/T .
Recent performance featured on KCRW 89.9-FM Los Angeles Morning Becomes Eclectic with Jason Bentley. “A dependably intriguing wordsmith, he still shows no shortage of unusually intelligent quirks.” - Rolling Stone “Winsome Norwegian Lerche is fast becoming indie rock’s Burt Bacharach with his cleaver, unobtrusive lyrics and artul melding of jazzy folk with punchy power pop.” A- - Entertainment Weekly “In terms of the total package, it’s right up there with Lerche’s best work. Truth be told, his batting average is getting a little ridiculous at this point.” - PASTE “Lerche somehow never loses cohesion. Chalk it up to his honeyed voice and unfailing pop craft…” - SPIN 8 of 10 (Spin’s 24 Summer Albums that Matter Most)
