“…90s-leaning cuts of minimal guitar fuzz and tight, sticky melodies marked by singer Abby Weems’ endearing Liz Phair-type monotone…the subtle feminist bent you’d expect from a band named after a Bratmobile record.” – Pitchfork “the downer charm of early grunge…excellent” – The New York Times Hailing from the home of Thurston Moore and Dinosaur Jr., and drawing from the fertile music community that is Western MA, Potty Mouth are all-parts smart-pop craftswomen, specializing in infectious indie pop meets ’77 punk perfection. The band released their debut 12″ vinyl EP, Sun Damage in July 2012, which garnered the attention of The Boston Globe, who named Potty Mouth one of the “top five indie-rock bands to watch in 2013.” Departing from the more angular shades of post-punk heard in their EP, Hell Bent is marked by its significantly heavier production and melancholic hooks. Nonetheless, the album stays true to the confident, youthful punk aesthetic the band has cultivated for themselves. WESLEY STACE SELF TITLED
NATIONAL RELEASE DATE: SEPTEMBER 17TH, 2013 Twenty-five years after the release of his debut album, celebrated author, NPR personality and singer/songwriter Wesley Stace, formerly known by his stage name John Wesley Harding, returns with Self-Titled, his first ever record under his given name, September 17 on Yep Roc Records. Stace chose not to use his well-established stage name for Self-Titled due to the considerably more personal nature of the new songs. “Novels seem to take care of the intellectual business for me these days, and my songs have become a lot more intimate and autobiographical, requiring a different musical treatment entirely. It seemed ridiculous to sing them under any name but my own,” notes Stace, adding, “It’s time to bring everything under one roof.” Self-Titled features two songs, “When I Knew” and “Stare At The Sun,” co-written with the Fiery Furnaces’ Eleanor Friedberger. Both tracks appear in alternate versions on Personal Record, Friedberger’s critically acclaimed new record co-written with Stace. SPIN hails the pair’s “easy collaboration” while NPR Music notes that Harding “knows a little something about smart love songs of every stripe.” Along with the new record, Wesley Stace’s Cabinet of Wonders, the ongoing variety show that draws together collaborators from the worlds of music, literature and comedy all hand-picked by Stace, is set for its second season of exclusive radio distribution by NPR. Recorded live at NYC’s City Winery and airing in six one-hour episodes beginning this summer, the Cabinet of Wonders will also travel to multiple markets this fall. In addition to his storied recording career, Stace is also the author of three novels (including the international bestseller Misfortune), teaches a course called “How to Write a Song” at Princeton University with poet Paul Muldoon and is artist-in-residence at Fairleigh Dickinson University, where he has also taught creative writing. He and his work have recently been the subject of a course at Central Connecticut State University titled “The Allusive John Wesley Harding.” Stace is also currently contributing to The New York Times’ Measure For Measure blog at http://nyti.ms/11zz0UY. His most recent novel, Charles Jessold, Considered as a Murderer, was published to rave reviews from The New Yorker, The New York Times and the Huffington Post.

Tift Merritt
Traveling Alone expanded edition NATIONAL release date cd/LP: September 17, 2013
After The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and hometown newspaper The Raleigh News & Observer heralded Traveling Alone as her best album yet, it would have been easy for Tift Merritt to sit back and enjoy the praise. Instead, she embarked on national and international tours, released the classical hybrid album Night with pianist Simone Dinnerstein and dug even further into Traveling Alone to create the beautiful new expanded edition CD and LP box sets. One year after its initial release, the exquisite expanded version comes packaged with an illustrated hardbound lyric book. Merritt commissioned the images from artist Diana Sudyka to help bring her words to life, packaged in a vintage book inspired by her travels and penchant for old fabrics, wallpapers and bookstores. Equally exciting, in addition to Traveling Alone, bonus album Traveling Companion features 10 unreleased acoustic tracks, including Merritt originals and two covers from Joni Mitchell and Tom Waits, recorded this year in Brooklyn’s Mason Jar Music studio with guitarist Eric Heywood (The Jayhawks, Son Volt, Alejandro Escovedo). The special companion package comes in both CD and LP formats. The CD version includes the hardbound, vintage-inspired book with two CDs in swinging pockets bound within the book’s pages. The premiere vinyl LP version includes three 180-gram LPs that span both Traveling Alone and Traveling Companion, the hardbound lyric book and three custom postcards. Both come with a free digital download code insert, and are must-haves for Merritt fans new and old.
“The touch of sweet sadness in Tift Merritt’s voice has rarely served her better than it does on Traveling Alone.” -The New York Times “Ms. Merritt put together what's likely to be a once-in-a-lifetime group of musicians that gives her new compositions an undeniable drive and a distinctive personality…Traveling Alone is her best yet.” - The Wall Street Journal “A quietly arresting album, one of the best in Merritt’s catalog…there’s not a single note out of place.” -The Raleigh News & Observer key points: Raleigh-Durham, New York, Nashville, Boston, Atlanta, Charlotte Track Listing - Traveling Alone 01. THE SADIES
INTERNAL SOUNDS
NATIONAL RELEASE DATE CD/LP: SEPTEMBER 17, 2013 The Sadies, Canada's hardest working band, return with their new album Internal Sounds, available in stores and online September 17th. Internal Sounds was recorded in Toronto and produced solely by the band’s Dallas Good. "There was a conscious effort to deliver a finished product that wouldn’t suffer from a deadline or budget,” says Good. “We recorded this record over a span of a year, in session for 20-plus days. By the end, we'd spent every dime we had and used up every favor. There is usually a sense of immediacy to our records, maybe because we make a lot of them. I didn't want that this time.” Internal Sounds also features another Canadian legend, Buffy Sainte-Marie, who contributes her haunting vocals to the closing track “We Are Circling.” With this album, The Sadies hit the ground running, picking up where 2010’s Darker Circles left off and giving us their most mature record yet.

TONY JOE WHITE HOODOO
NATIONAL RELEASE DATE CDLP: SEPTEMBER 17TH, 2013 Tony Joe White’s latest effort, Hoodoo, emerges via Yep Roc Records on September 17, 2013. Awash in danger, spiritual uncertainty, and environmental fury, Hoodoo’s lyrical concerns are matched by a particularly intense strain of White’s trademark swamp funk. Hence the title’s double-edged meaning: “hoodoo” referring both to the songs’ ominous tone and the palpable vibe that filled the studio as the songs were cut. Cut mostly live to tape— vocals and all—much of Hoodoo consists of first takes. Culled from an initial stack of seventeen or eighteen tunes, the nine songs that comprise the album come alive in the haunting atmosphere and intensity of the stripped-down recording process. MARKETING POINTS: • Celebrating his 70th birthday • Press by Missing Piece Group • Radio by Brad Paul Media • 180 gram vinyl with CD version and download code • CD comes with download code • New single “The Gift” featured on the LA Times • Radio servicing of full album to AAA and Americana • European, East and West Coast Tour following release TOP MARKETS: New York, NY,Los Angeles, CA, Washington DC, Louisville, KY, Seattle-Tacoma, WA, Nashville, TN, Portland, OR, Minneapolis, MN TRACK LISTING 01. Artist: Nightmares on Wax Title: Feelinʼ Good 9.17.2013 WARP241
Overview Nightmares on Wax is an institution, albeit a delightfully different one. The man behind the moniker, George Evelyn, just keeps reinventing, not in a wilful Bowie way, but flowing along, going at whatever speed he fancies to wherever his ideas carry him. For the last seven years he’s lived in an Ibizan farmhouse and, while he’s Warp Records’ longest serving artist – “the granddaddy,” as he puts it – he overwhelmingly focuses on his current projects, letting them revitalize his music. Best known for his ground-breaking ‘90s LPs Smokers Delight and Carboot Soul – and American favorite, cinematic lo-funk of 2006’s In A Space Outta Sound – Evelyn’s pride and joy these days is his four year old underground party on the white island he calls home. Wax Da Jam at Las Dalias, Ibiza’s oldest nightclub (50 this summer) has become a go-to haunt for locals, alongside guests such as DJ Shadow and Roots Manuva. It’s all for kicks. It’s all about ‘Feelin’ Good’, hence the name of his new album.
Format: CD Boxlot: 30 Price: $13.99 Packaging: Digipack with booklet
If that sounds a bit hippy dippy, forget it, Feelin’ Good is zesty with funk, soul, 'Masterplan' is bracing trip hop soul featuring Californian folk singer Katy Gray, 'Now Is The Time' is a squidgy funk assault that George reckons is marinated in Wax the Jam flavour, 'Give Thx' bleeds '70s Motown vibes, 'Eye (Can't See)'is a gripping, glitched, The latter pair both featuring ex-Zero 7 singer Moses, while 'Om Sweet H(om)e' finds M People percussionist Shovel and George himself revving up to the sounds of chanting Tibetan monks.

THE BAND OF HEATHENS
SUNDAY MORNING RECORD Sunday Morning Record, the Band of Heathens' fourth studio album (and seventh overall), marks a milestone in the resilient outfit’s development, capturing the musicians' remarkable creative chemistry along with the deepening melodic and emotional resonance in the songwriting of founding singer-guitarists Ed Jurdi and Gordy Quist. The 11-song set, produced by Austin studio vets and longtime BoH collaborators George Reiff and Steve Christensen, is the product of an intense period of change within and around the group. The Band of Heathens performs 150+ dates a year from Maine to California, and they've played some of the finest stages in music including club dates and performances at major festivals like Austin City Limits Music Festival, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Wakarusa, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Mile High Music Festival, and more. “★★★★ (4 STARS) Top Hat Crown & the Clapmaster’s Son finds the (Austin) song collective completely giving into a Rolling Thunder Revue meets Mad Dogs & Englishmen-styled romp. Together they paint a vivid canvas” - THE AUSTIN CHRONICLE “Equally adept at rootsy country-rock as they are old-time R&B on One Foot in the Ether.” –UNCUT “...what makes these Heathens so refreshingly different is the overall musicianship and seamless blending of altrockers, folk tales, gutbucket blues and heartland anthems.” –CHICAGO SUN TIMES "Top Hat Crown should charm anyone who digs The Jayhawks, Buddy & Julie Miller or vinyl-era classic rock like Lowell George period Little Feat and The Band, who get a nod on the album with a blazing cover of the Levon Helm staple “Hurricane.” - DENNIS COOK, JAMBASE “The Wall Street Journal’s Jim Fusilli called theirs the best set at South By Southwest. The Dallas Morning News calls them “a must-see show.” Maverick magazine says they’re “magnificent", and The New York Times called their show at Brooklyn’s Union Hall “hungry, unflagging and lean.”

Freddy J IV and Brenn Beck are back with an album of voodoo hillbilly punk-blues. Recorded in Fort Wayne IN, and mixed in Detroit by Jim Diamond, “Rock Them Back To Hell!” sees the duo expanding their sonic palette by adding bass, harmonica, organ, and “trash percussion” (that would be a cardboard box, a paint tin, trash can and an electrified five-gallon bucket). The result is an album to wake up the dead, and rock it back to hell! The “hell-billies” cover art is the work of renowned artist William Stout (Return Of The Living Dead, Invaders From Mars, Pan’s Labyrinth). TOMMY KEENE
Excitement At Your Feet
The Tommy Keene Covers Album features songs by: The Who, Rolling Stones, Big Star & more!
Tommy Keene delved deep into his record collection in planning Excitement at Your Feet, his 10th studio effort and first LP of cover songs, due for release Sept. 17. Rather than top hits, Keene takes on some heavy hitters: the Rolling Stones, the Who, the Bee Gees, but apart from Donovan’s “Catch the Wind” none of Excitement’s 11 tracks ever troubled the U.S. singles chart. This album largely about the artist’s personal musical inspiration. Keene pays tribute to his aforementioned British Invasion heroes, but also his East Coast punk/new wave roots with covers of Television and Mink Deville. On a more contemporary note, he also tips his hat to Keene Brothers partner Robert Pollard with a cover of Guided By Voices’ “Choking Tara.” Get ready to dig into this idiosyncratic survey of great rock and roll from the past half century.

"Grace," the poet Frank O'Hara once wrote, "to be born and live as variously as possible." Though early in his musical career, this ambitious but certainly worthy aspiration toward "variousness" might be said to be the defining characteristic behind the artistic output of Alexis Georgopoulos, aka Arp. After all, not many people can claim to have curated and performed at New York's downtown bastion of the avant–garde, The Kitchen (where Laurie Anderson, Glenn Branca and Philip Glass cut their teeth), to have been DJ'ed by NY underground disco pioneer David Mancuso (at his legendary party The Loft), to have soundtracked a Chanel runway show per Karl Lagerfeld's request and to have released an album of minimalistic classical music (Arp & Anthony Moore’s FRKWYS 3 [RVNG Intl]).

„An album of painstakingly produced, walking-paced pop songs that one might easily mistake for a lost collaborative album between the likes of Brian Eno and Kevin Ayers“ -The Fader
Perhaps best described as a pop album by an avant–garde musician, MORE is an album that begins in one place and ends in another, melding bedroom art–pop with avant-garde composition to create a world of heady atmospherics and melodic song craft over its concentrated 46 minute arc. Played almost entirely by Georgopoulos, MORE reveals an impressive grasp of style and vision, following a distinct narrative, dipping into 70s art rock, autumnal baroque pop, musique concréte, minimalistic piano epics, narcotic gospel, sound library atmospheres, and delicate space folk. Although 2010’s The Soft Wave (a New York Times “Notable Album of 2010”) may be his most–heard album so far, Georgopoulos' 2010 collaboration with Englishman Anthony Moore may provide more appropriate background for MORE. Not merely content to espouse the voguish sounds of the day, Georgopoulos decided early in 2012 that he'd abandon his analog synthesizer–centric abstractions in favor of something he'd never done, write songs. The better to challenge himself. As such, with MORE, he has made his first album–length foray into song. The 12 pieces that make up MORE might best be heard as distinct scenes in a single film. And this being his first New York album, the city figures in significantly, both in scale and in character. “High–Heeled Clouds" locates its protagonist amongst the well– heeled, boutiqued mirages of Manhattan's 5th Avenue, a lilting waltz and a tale of delusional souls and refracting mirrors. "Judy Nylon" is all highbrow primitivism, chugging forward on an adrenaline rush of Phil Manzanera–like fuzz guitars and locomotive rhythm, picking up speed as it builds. The otherworldly, baroque atmospheres of "A Tiger In The Hall at Versailles" are a tale in contrast, with the tension of the harpsichord–led verses giving way to a lush, doe–eyed chorus, akin to a shaft of light breaking through a sinister scene. "E2 Octopus" is the first of three candy– coated morsels of musique concréte on MORE, revealing a love of innovators like BBC's Delia Derbyshire and Bernard Parmegiani and tactile field recordings. Moved by the premature passing of Broadcast chanteuse Trish Keenan, "Light+Sound" is a delicate, moving ballad awash in Mellotron and harpsichord, calling to mind the kind of softly psychedelic, autumnal atmospheres Robert Wyatt has specialized in. "17th Daydream" begins in the open air of the country and travels, by air and rail, to the rising steam of the city. The very New York–inspired, minimalist mini–epic "Gravity (for Charlemagne Palestine)” is an alternate Empire State theme, an ecstatic pull portrayed by an always– ascending pillar of sound chugging on piano, cello and spiraling guitars. "More (Blues)" suggests a stoned choirboy fronting a gospel church group, Georgopoulos' delicate delivery melding with the song's narcotic sway. The misty mix of astral folk and beach– influenced atmospherics of "Daphne & Chloe" is, simply, epic. Finally, closer "Persuasion" rides into the sun, a bookend in the form of overdriven fuzz guitars and Moog synthesizer. MORE establishes Georgopoulos not as a stylistic shapeshifter but rather as a restless artist not content to stay put. Like a visual artist who works on a particular body of work within a larger body of work, he makes albums as complete wholes. And then he makes another. If MORE seems like quite a different beast from The Soft Wave or FRKWYS 3, as the dust settles, they will reveal an artist who follows his own trajectory, regardless of trend. If MORE proves we do not know what Georgopoulos might do next, his work is all the more compelling for it.

As part of the Pacific Northwest indie rap collective Oldominion, Grayskul made a name for themselves regionally with futuristic sci-fi raps over gloomy, innovative production from the likes of Mr. Hill and S moke before catching the attention of Rhymesayers Entertainment while touring with Eyedea & Abilities. Opening for Atmosphere on the At It Again Tour in 2005, emcees Onry Ozzborn (aka Reason) and JFK (aka Recluse) took to the stage with aliens draped over their shoulders and televisions set to static on either side of the turntables. From the early days of their existence, it was clear that Grayskul was on another plane. A host of tour-only releases paired with RSE albums Deadlivers and Bloody Radio put Grayskul on the national map, with indie rap icons such as Slug, Aesop Rock, Mr. Lif, Cage and Pigeon John making appearances. Occupying the roles of superheroes and vampires on the aforementioned records, Onry and JFK combined seemingly disparate elements of abstract, goth, horrorcore, and free associative lyricism into something fresh. “Prom Quiz”, from Grayskul’s RSE debut Deadlivers, married their outsider worldview with accessible narratives and catchy production. In 2009 they released a joint effort with Chicago producer and longtime Qwel collaborator Maker under the name Graymaker, before taking some time apart to focus on a variety of projects such as Dark Time Sunshine (Onry), Building Wings on the Way Down, and Th3rdz (JFK). The time off from Grayskul gave Onry and JFK the opportunity to polish their respective blades before stepping back into the booth to record Zenith, their first release on Fake Four, Inc. The entire album was conceived, written, and recorded in Momentum Studios in Seattle under the watchful ear of sound engineer Zebulon Dak. Zenith finds Onry and JFK at their storytelling finest, examining school shootings, hollow social media existence, fatherhood, and the false allure of the club under explosive production handled by Aesop Rock, Smoke, Void Pedal, and Moodie Black. Raekwon starts the show in classic Wu fashion with a spoken intro, and the record also features guest shots from Aesop, Solilla, Reva DeVito, and Fake Four labelmate Terra Lopez of Sister Crayon. True to its title, the 17-track Zenith is the masterfully produced and executed crown jewel of Grayskul’s decade in the indie rap game.

GENRE : WORLD/AFRICAN FILE UNDER: “T” Touré, Sidi RELEASE DATE : September 17, 2013
NO EXPORT TO EUROPE, CANADA, AUSTRALIA On September 17 Malian songwriter and guitarist Sidi Touré returns with Alafia, his third international release for Thrill Jockey and his most focused recording to date. This follows last year’s critically-lauded Koïma and 2011’s revelatory debut Sahel Folk. With attention from NPR, SPIN and Pitchfork, among others, Touré’s musical identity has fully come into its own. Touré deals with the strife and political instability plaguing his home region using the effortlessly broad musical language he’s internalized since his youth. Regional styles, including takamba, holley, and abarbarba (the butcher’s dance), along with his longtime interest in international music, form the underpinning to Touré’s lyrical ode to his country. Recorded between two locations—Nantes, France and Bamako, Mali— during what has become the most contentious political impasse for Mali since the country’s independence decades ago, Alafia mirrors the dramatic nature of the situation. Mali is a massive, culturally diverse and largely peaceful nation that is still struggling to maintain order following a Tuareg rebellion in Touré’s home region in the North last April. The ensuing chaos that followed led to a coup in the capital, leaving a power vacuum in which Islamic extremists have cast a dark and violent shadow over Northern Mali. While Touré’s Gao was under control of Islamic groups, the band recorded in Nantes on the heels of Touré’s first European tour. Recording in Bamako took place after the “Sahara Soul” tour with well-known Malian acts Bassekou Kouyate and Tamikrest, while Northern Mali’s biggest cities had been liberated. Alafia is marked by these contrasting contexts and the varied mind-frames they imply. The album’s title, which means “peace,” is a simple word that sums up an album of thematic complexities—joy, dialogue, reconciliation, multiculturalism, respect and the fight for a better society— and in-depth explorations of the Songhaï folk music from Touré’s beloved home region. Backed by this band of young talented musicians, who have joined him on severals tours, he invited friends from the North to participate to this album: the singer Leïla Gobbi, the kolo player Berté Ibrahim, and the rising star guitarist (and Touré disciple) Baba Salah. Touré also opens his music to Malian traditions outside the Songhaï realm with the n’goni virtuoso Abdoulaye Koné aka Kandiafa and the legendary Fula flute player Cheick Diallo.

GENRE : ROCK/POP, EXPERIMENTAL FILE UNDER: “W” Wong, Dustin RELEASE DATE : September 17, 2013 NO EXPORT From the opening notes of Mediation of Ecstatic Energy, it is clear that Dustin Wong has bested even himself in expanding the capacity of what can be done with a few pedals and a guitar. The album is the conclusion of a trilogy that began with 2010’s Infinite Love and continued with last year’s Dreams Say, View, Create, Shadow Leads, each record created by Dustin in solitude with ten fingers, two feet, and his endless imagination. Mediation shows Dustin complicating his already complex arrangements for guitar, voice, and loops, expanding not only his timbral palate, but also exploring new rhythmic intricacies. This is his first record since moving back to Japan (where he spent his childhood), and follows Toropical Circle, a collaborative release with Japanese singer Takako Minekawa, which was released on vinyl on Thrill Jockey in July. Dustin is constantly exploring new conceptual frameworks and methods of music making. “The Big She” opens Mediation of Ecstatic Energy with the most aggressive atmosphere Dustin has cultivated on a solo release. Explosive and unpredictable, the song features a constantly morphing loop-pulse that allows Dustin to clang and wail from above. Throughout the album, he uses syncopation, abnormal time signatures, and polyrhythm to create an overwhelming feeling of weightlessness, most notably on songs like “Out of the Crown Head” and “Imaginelectric.” There is also an increased bass presence, which is generated using his guitar and an octave pedal. These are the sounds of Dustin advancing his technique, pushing it as far as he can, from complex abstraction to blissful bursts of melody. Much of the album’s energy and all of the song titles are derived from a short story Dustin wrote, which is included in the album’s artwork. The story incorporates themes of youth, technology, and spirituality. It was partially inspired by Dustin’s experience growing up in a Christian school in Tokyo, which he attended from 3rd to 12th grade. It was here that Dustin was exposed to singing in rounds – a direct precursor to his dynamic loops. The theme of spirituality is directly reflected in the album’s artwork, which is a photo of Dustin’s aura taken in Japan.

GENRE : EXPERIMENTAL, FOLK, PSYCH FILE UNDER: “P” Plankton Wat “E” Eternal Tapestry RELEASE DATE : September 17, 2013
NO EXPORT TO EUROPE, CANADA, AUSTRALIA Portland, OR musician Dewey Mahood is one of the most versatile and prolific musicians in the modern psychedelic underground. As Plankton Wat, he has explored the outer reaches of folk and synthesized drift since the mid-aughts, and his dedication to improvisation above all else, his restless exploratory spirit, has earned him his place as a dark horse in the continuum of contemporary sonic explorers such as Sun Araw (with whom he has collaborated), Expo ’70, Steve Gunn, Herbcraft, and Daniel Higgs. Following his departure from heavy-psych mainstays Eternal Tapestry in late 2012, Plankton Wat has emerged as Mahood’s primary musical focus, which is instantly apparent on his latest sojourn, Drifter’s Temple. Rather than improvising live to tape and editing the pieces judiciously as he has on his previous tapes, CD-Rs, and limited LPs, these songs emerged from rehearsals and took form during live performances over the past year before being laid to tape. Mahood utilized 6 and 12 string guitars, lap steel, bass, organ, and synth to realize these richly detailed songs. Drifter’s Temple harkens back to Mahood’s childhood in Northern California, both sonically and conceptually. A loose narrative is woven through these ten instrumental tracks, touching on the Gold Country and Mt. Shasta that populate his native countryside. The album unfolds with the grace and contour of the landscape that inspired it, with fingerpicked melodies slowly growing to gigantic peaks of lysergic bliss. His guitar style is as far reaching as ever on Drifter’s Temple, which shows him seamlessly integrating his love of the Appalacian folk music of Dock Boggs and Roscoe Holcomb into the subtle Grateful Dead-isms, nods to 70’s cosmic music, and overt Crazy Horse moves he has explored on recent releases. The album was recorded by Mahood at home on a four-track and features contributions from Dustin Dybvig (Horse Feathers & Edibles), Matt McDowell (Sagas) and John Rau (Royal Baths & Edibles). Plankton Wat will be touring Europe extensively in the fall, including a performance at the Incubate Festival in the Netherlands, as well as the US. Mind Over Mirrors
When The Rest Are Up At Four Those of us inclined to summer nightswimming in the open ocean may have noticed, under the proper conditions, a pale green or blue glow amidst the roiling black waves and in the trailing wakes of kicking feet and paddling hands. Bioluminescent phytoplankton appear as thousands of pinhole stars pricked out in the surf, simulating (to the contemporary observer) an artificial LED glow illuminating the vortices of agitation. So too does the music of Mind Over Mirrors, the solo project of Jaime Fennelly, deploy modest organic constituent materials— in his case, an Indian pedal harmonium—to produce deeply satisfying, seemingly magical sensory effects that simulate the swells and troughs of synthesized electronic music (a specious designation and half of a false dichotomy, but a recognizable shorthand nonetheless) as well the ceaseless rhythms of tidal surges.

Utilizing an Indian pedal harmonium, oscillators, tape delays, and an assortment of synthesizing processors, Fennelly bends slowly-building, repetitive melodies into massive sonic mountains When the Rest Are Up at Four is the fourth Mind Over Mirrors album following releases on Digitalis, Hands In the Dark, & Aguirre/Gift Tapes Mind Over Mirrors has shared bills with kindred spirits Mountains, Golden Retriever, Date Palms, Angel Olsen, Zelienople, Scott Tuma, Zaimph, Jon Mueller, Cleared and Steve Gunn The album was mastered and cut to vinyl by Andreas [LUPO] Lubich at Calyx in Berlin LP version is pressed on virgin vinyl and packaged in a black paper inner sleeve housed in a full color jacket printed on uncoated stock. Fennelly buttresses his simple harmonium foundation with a superstructural assortment of oscillators, tape delays, and synthesizing processors that belong to the world of classic analog electronic composition. But the essential minimalism and refinement of timbre he pursues should not be confused with purity or dogmatic adherence to some imagined authenticity, whether Luddite or academic. Rather, the harmonium’s significance is as historical, cultural, and folkloric as much as it is a self-imposed compositional or technological limitation. (I imagine Jaime would agree with Stravinsky’s assessment: “My freedom is so much the greater and more meaningful the more narrowly I limit my field of action and the more I surround myself with obstacles.”) The humble harmonium, a 19th-century pump and pedal-operated reed keyboard instrument, features prominently in North Indian and European classical and religious canons as well as the vernacular music of Scandinavia and the American South. To most ears, its sound conjures a churchiness and spiritual asceticism that fits Fennelly’s meditative, even prayerful music intuitively, if obliquely. Tellingly, the instrument was prized among seabound sailors and residents of tropical and island climes for its portability, ruggedness, and ability to stay in tune despite high humidity and heat—as opposed to say, pianos, harpsichords, and organs. Emerging from a renewed collaboration with dancer and performance artist Miguel Gutierrez—the seed of the gorgeous “Storing the Winter”—as well as musicians Scott Tuma (Souled American) and Matt Christensen (Zelienople), When the Rest Are Up at Four, Mind Over Mirrors’ fourth and finest collection yet, maintains but supplements the project’s solo axis. Fennelly recorded much of it to two-track tape in his Chicago bungalow, though appropriately, the pipe organ on “Heights & the Deeper,” the longest track, was recorded while in residency at AIR Antwerpen, ensconced in a lockmaster’s house at the entrance of Antwerp’s shipping port—once again, the sea encroaches meaningfully on Fennelly’s processes and aesthetic. Jaime also cites his interest in moon node astrology and permaculture, other natural cycles, as formative influences on this record. But enough about process and inspiration—what does it sound like? While we can point out referential compass points—G.I. Gurdjieff’s harmonium improvisations; certain particularly harmonically viscous recordings of Sacred Harp singers; Edward Artemiev’s soundtracks to Tarkovsky films—in its patience, its simultaneously formal and folk aspects, and its sheer, unabashed (if intermittently anxious) beauty, it doesn’t sound much like anything else being made today. The metaphor of sea phosphorescence and the historical valences of the harmonium’s popularity among islanders are particularly apt given Mind Over Mirrors’ origins on a remote island on the Salish Sea of Washington State while still involved with his former group, the legendary Peeesseye (also featuring Chris Forsyth and Fritz Welch.) And it is island music, though not of the same generic dimensions usually attributed, bearing a resemblance—spiritual, if not sonic—to another island music, the ring shouts of Gullah and Geechee communities off the coast of Georgia and South Carolina. A similarly easy confluence of praise and play is evident in these six deliciously unfolding pieces, which produce oceanic associations as well as catalyzing oneiric reveries. Their ebbs and flows recall, alternately, the pulse and throb of an aching bruise, the somatic patterns of breathing or swimming, or, once again, the ephemeral illuminations and deliquescence of bioluminescent phytoplankton. I strongly suggest a swim herein. Brendan Greaves Bald Head Island, North Carolina, July 16, 2013

“fifth LP from psych-folk-rockers is a streamlined beast” - Uncut “Dave Heumann’s stoner rock about (mostly) the black hole of our souls is scoured with acid riffage that grinds like a glacier being crushed under its own weight” - Q Magazine “Coming Out of the Fog finds the band playing its sharpest music to date. With its combination of intoxicatingly slow rhythms, surreally poetic lyrics and fuzzed-out guitars, the album can have an almost inebriating effect on a listener.” - Baltimore Sun “Dave Heumann’s Arbouretum is arguably the best of the millennial classic rock bands, a guitar-fuzzed powerhouse that follows Neil Young’s trampled trail, bending folk and country into surreal shapes through the sheer force of volume and distortion.” - Dusted

Records, the label which gave them their start, and later for TVT, Tee Pee & now on Anton Newcombe’s own A Recordings label. BJM has been essential in the development of the modern U.S. garage scene, and many LA and SF musicians got their start playing with Newcombe, including Peter Hayes of The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Originally Newcombe was heavily influenced by The Rolling Stones' psychedelic phase - the name comes from Stones guitarist Brian Jones combined with a reference to cult leader Jim Jones, but his work in the 2000s has expanded into aesthetic dimensions approximating the UK Shoegazing genre of the 1990s and incorporating influences from world music, especially Middle Eastern and Brazilian music.

With this record, Pelican brought on new levels of complexity to their already distinctive auditory stamp. Acoustic guitars take their place beside the group's traditional (read: highly amplified) power-droning and awe-inspiring instrumental anthems. Whether it signaled the end of the underground musical landscape as we knew it, or the beginning of a new one is anyone's guess. Luckily, it rules either way. “SELLING POINTS” ____________________________________________________________ - Housed in an old-school style heavyweight gatefold jacket printed on reflective metallic stock. Each record is in a heavyweight 5 color inner-sleeve. - Pelican are touring both the US and Europe throughout the remainder of 2013 supporting their new album Forever Becoming (out Oct. 2013 on Southern Lord). - They've toured with Low, Tortoise, Isis, Boris, Cave In, Daughters, The Bronx, High On Fire, Tombs, Circa Survive, Thrice, Torche, Opeth and pretty much everyone.

ARNOLD DREYBLATT & MEGAFAUN APPALACHIAN EXCITATION The meeting of composer Arnold Dreyblatt and psych-folk trio Megafaun shouldn’t be seen as unlikely just because it’s crossgenerational, or even (arguably) cross-genre. Such categorizations have to be set aside before taking in Appalachian Excitation. The music on their first collaborative recording fits into many styles, but none quite completely. It’s psychedelic in the mind altering (not electric sitar) sense, it hints at Americana but isn’t actually of any nation. The album opens with “Home Hat Placement,” a military march with repeating guitar lines and a snare keeping strict time that resolves in a jagged funk. “Recurrence Plot” slows the gambit to a crawl, becoming a ploddingly persistent procession punctuated with bright chords. “Edge Observation” brings the music down to stasis with sustained tones layered into lush harmonies. If there seems to be a methodology at work, it’s undermined by the closer, “Radiator,” at eleven minutes the longest track of the set, almost proto-punk in its riffing and almost danceable in its rhythms but set apart from any such concerns by clean playing and a tight, modular structure. Categorizing their music is kind of like fitting a hexagonal peg into an octagonal hole: You might be able to force it, but you’ll know it didn’t really fit.

Flashback to Chicago in 1985, when House Music was just being born. A few kids - Matt Warren, Miguel Garcia and Ralphi Rosario, get together to join forces with the already established Sunset Mobile Disco - owned by brothers Alex and Robert Rojo - to create a new record label as an outlet for their productions. In the following 4 years, Sunset Records Inc. released some of the most groundbreaking Chicago House records, mixing New Wave, Disco and Industrial influences with "beat tracks" and a huge amount of talent expertly scouted by Matt Warren & Miguel Garcia. While largely remaining in the shadows of larger labels like Trax and Dj International, the metamorphosis of Sunset Mobile Disco into Sunset Records Inc. perfectly illustrates the wide range of influences that gave Chicago’s dance scene its unique sound. Jerome Derradji is proud to present the definitive story - written by Jacob Arnold - of one of Chicago's House Music best kept secret in a superb gatefold DLP and a DCD compilation that includes remastered, rare and unreleased tracks from the Sunset Records Inc. label along with lost pictures and artifacts spread in a gatefold DLP and in a 23 page booklet (DCD only). Key Selling Points: Jerome Derradji's past compilations, 122 BPM: The Birth Of House Music, In The Dark: The Soul Of Detroit & The American Boogie Down have received widespread critical acclaim and were great sellers in North America, Europe and Japan. Chicago's original house music is seeing a huge resurgence of popularity around the world as proven by the recent reissue compilations on Strut, Soul Jazz, Demon and more. "Kill Yourself Dancing" is part 1 of a 2 series compilation on the work of Matt Warren and Miguel Garcia. DAVE RILEY AND BOB CORRITORE Hush Your Fuss!
CONTEMPORARY JUKE JOINT BLUES, PERFORMED BY MODERN MASTERS “I first heard Dave Riley and Bob Corritore perform together at the King Biscuit Festival in 2009. Dave captivated the audience with his original songs, fine Mississippi-flavored singing and guitar, and friendly stage presence. And Bob’s masterful full-toned Chicago harp and strong ensemble playing charged each song with deep blues. Together they have a crafted sound completely unique to these two experienced blues players. This, their 3rd CD, upholds and advances their tour-tested formula. Come and get it from Dave and Bob. It’s not a history lesson or the same old stories. It is modern day down-home juke joint blues performed by two creative masters” – Bob Margolin The “Mississippi meets Chicago” blues partnership of Dave Riley and Bob Corritore is now in its 8th year. This is their 3rd CD together, and they have toured extensively in the USA, Europe and South America. Their stage show is a real down-home blues throwdown! Dave Riley grew up in Hattiesburg, Mississippi before moving to the West Side of Chicago. He worked down South in later years was a close associate of Frank Frost, Sam Carr and John Weston. Bob Corritore is a Chicago born and bred harmonica player. He won the 2012 Living Blues Award for Best Harmonica Player. Bob’s Harmonica Blues CD won a 2011 Blues Music Award, he is a recipient of the Blues Foundation’s Keeping The Blues Alive Award and performed on a Grammy-nominated album. This was the Dutch band’s second album, issued in 1983. Less confrontational than their debut album, it showcased a more mature Vandenberg, one with increasingly sophisticated songs and broader scope. The album may not have eclipsed sales of the debut in the USA, where record company politics hampered progress, but in Europe the record gained healthy traction. With cover art painted by Adrian, whose guitar solos also continued to impress, the album is now regarded as an essential cornerstone of the band’s legacy.
First time on CD! The only real fist-in-yourface hard rock act to blow their way out of Pittsburgh during the 1970s was four piece riff kings Diamond REO. The explosive ‘Dirty Diamonds’ was issued in 1976 . This is the birth of modern arena rock as we know it with the most impressive factor surely being the punishing guitar work of Warren King, a man who evokes the spirit Hendrix, Perry and Page. Highly recommended for those with a penchant for loud, mean, heavy rock.
Taking their influence from glam and fusing it with a pinch of punk, a new strain of Sunset Strip bands started to emerge in the 80’s and Faster Pussycat were among its main offenders . Issued on Elektra in 1987, this debut album was helmed by Poison producer Ric Browde. Fronted by charismatic vocalist Taime Downe and featuring guitarists Brent Muscat and Gregg Steele, the tracks leave little room for experimentation or refinement, concentrating instead on riffs, low slung guitars and a serious dose of rock ‘n roll attitude.

The Runner’ was Thomas’s seventh studio album and found him emphasising the very thing that captured his audience’s imagination in the first instance, with a brace of great melodies and sublimely connective lyrics. These were songs that would eventually go on to be recorded by a variety of artists including Chicago, Manfred Man and Santana. With a pronounced West Coast sound comparable to that of Steely Dan and Hall & Oates, the music is fluid and consistent with a meticulous approach to song construction.
Of all the great pomp bands that flourished during the 1970s, five piece West Coast unit Aviary were, in many ways, the kings of the genre. Grandiose, pompous, bombastic and completely impervious to fashion, the unique song writing talent of vocalist Brad Love and the musical skills he and his fellow band members brought to this album still make it a very special work of beauty. Originally issued in 1979, and brimming with epically constructed songs and arrangements, the contents were truly mind blowing, calling to mind Queen and Yes, together with the art-rock of Be Bop Deluxe and Sparks.
GLIDER
The man is a king of kings in the world of Canadian singer-songwriters. ‘Glider’ was his sixth album, a record that built on the strengths of his previous work ‘Still Here’. Self -produced, and issued in 1979, the record contains a stellar collection of tracks including the eerie Sci-Fi influence of ‘Pilot’, the equally complimentary tones of ‘High And Mighty’ and ‘Nero’s Spell’, plus the epic ‘Voices Of The Children’. A great album, presented with a mouth-watering album cover. No wonder that Supertramp were so enamoured that they actually wanted to release it on a new custom label they were intending to form. Like the sweetest orange their opuses are bright and vibrant, sweet and a little tart. Daiquiri Fantomas is a cocktail of ideas, breathing life into the most diverse sound architectures by boldly experimenting with acoustic instruments and vintage electronics crossed with new technologies. LP reissue - with new gold printed sleeve. Originally released in tiny edition of 52 on Albert's Basement, Blank Realm's 2010 album 'Déjà What?' became a homeland hit in Australia after it was picked up by Brisbane's Bedroom Suck label. The album is an uneasy marriage of 70/80s US experimental punk with ultra-crude Flying Nun styled pop. At times it's hard to tell if the results are casual and unfinished, or if the album is a complete universe unto itself. For those who have just got wise to this year's acclaimed 'Go Easy', 'Déjà What?' will prove an essential backtrack in this fascinating origin story. 1. Crystal Ball 2. Full Moon Door 3. King Midas—Scandinavia Fysisk Format LP / FYR002LP / 7041889501274 / $24.99 Reissue of Norwegian 90s cult classic! King Midas are an Oslo-based band who have been projecting their own special brand of electronic artpop since the nineties. Their second album, Scandinavia from 1999, is a true masterpiece, a cult album for the initiated. Fourteen years on, Fysisk Format reissues the album vinyl including an 8 page fanzine with download code. Combining inspiration from German minimal techno with author Christopher Isherwood and Donald Duck , this is an album with unexpected and sudden changes in its musical palette. At times it comes through more like a bizarre art installation than a traditional pop LP. Still, it also captures the band at their most melodic, echoing the subversive pop strategies of early Roxy Music & Ultravox and updating it to the late-90’s peculiarities of radio cut-ups, lounge-jazz snippets and dub-heavy bass. 1.
