Shields is the fourth and most anticipated Grizzly Bear album to date. After long spans of shows headlining (as well as supporting Radiohead, Feist, Wilco and Paul Simon), Grizzly Bear’s members Chris Bear, Ed Droste, Daniel Rossen and Chris Taylor lived their own lives. Trips were taken, and friendships were restored; families were visited, and solo projects were finished. The potential energy gathered in tour vans and buses, in studios and on stages for years was finally released, giving the individual band’s pieces the chance to recover and, after a year, return to being Grizzly Bear. The whole band wrote songs together, taking each other’s ideas and extending them. And for the first time, they tended to move forward only with the songs that were most open to true quartet collaboration. Asked which tunes on Shields belong to which songwriter, every member balks and explains that, for the first time, these are actually full-band numbers. Both in process and product, this is Grizzly Bear as they’ve never been. “This has a different energy behind it,” concludes Droste. “Veckatimest was a little more of a polite album; the desire to keep the vocals smooth might have kept a little distance between us and the audience. This one feels a bit more rough and exposed, so that on Shields, everything speaks for itself.”

The Corin Tucker Band is set to return with Kill My Blues September 18 on Kill Rock Stars. The follow-up to the group’s critically acclaimed 2010 release 1,000 Years—an album hailed as “thoughtful [and] subtle” by Pitchfork and “a determined effort” by the Los Angeles Times—Kill My Blues finds former Sleater-Kinney frontwoman Tucker returning to her riot grrrl sonic roots along with band members Seth Lorinczi (Golden Bears), Sara Lund (Unwound) and Mike Clark (Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks). The group will tour the east coast this fall, please see a list of dates below. Of writing and recording the new album, Tucker notes that Kill My Blues was a group effort. “After the past two years playing together, traveling and making music, I think we’re more comfortable,” she says. “We collaborated on every song on this record and no one was shy about their ideas. I think you can hear that sense of joy and abandon in the songs.” Best-known for her role in punk rock mainstay Sleater-Kinney, Tucker also played in the influential early-`90s rock group Heavens to Betsy. Recently she has appeared alongside Sleater-Kinney bandmate Carrie Brownstein in the IFC comedy Portlandia. Corin lives with her two children and filmmaker husband Lance Bangs in Portland.

“Corin Tucker knows how to transmute melancholy into energy, a stubborn belief that what can feel like a trap can also turn into a map to freedom.” — NPR “Fresh Air” “A punk-rock heroine”—Rolling Stone
WAX TAILOR DUSTY RAINBOW FROM THE DARK Wax Tailor established his reputation in just a few years as one of the leading voices of the post hip-hop and downtempo scenes. Returning with the concept album, Dusty Rainbow From The Dark, the French producer gives us a musical tale inspired in large part by the enchanted world of childhood. His fourth long player is also a charming allegory on the escapist power of music. To compose this album, Wax Tailor went back to his first love of sampling, but added a unique twist to the process. Instead of trying to replicate loops, the producer gathered textures from the grooves of countless phonograms and reworked them to create entirely new instruments, note by note. This approach enabled him to get a very vintage feel to the sound of the album. The fall of 2011 was spent in New York alongside singer-songwriter Sara Genn, to pen the plot of the album, and at the start of 2012, the casting for the album began. The first order was to find a narrator, a role which was tailor made for the legendary voice of Don McCorkindale, best known for his work on the serialized radio version of The Avengers, on the BBC. Simultaneously, Wax Tailor cast guest vocalists that would appear on the album, drawing from familiar collaborato (Charlotte Savary, Sara Genn, Mattic, A.S.M, Ali Harter) as well as new voices (Aloe Blacc, Elzhi, Jennifer Charles, Shana Halligan, Akua). Finally, reknowned children book illustator Rebecca Dautremer came on board to create the art that would accompany the story and offer her vision of the main protagonist. This multicolored fable with an international cast takes us on a wandering path through psychedelic downtempo and baroque hip-hop, to create an album that is at once modern and timeless.

MENOMENA “MOMS”
bark131 CD / 2xLP+MP3
STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 18, 2012 During the last decade, Menomena has become its own reference point. From hooks wrapped around plummeting baritone saxophone lines and nearly inhuman rhythms to serpentine lyrical frameworks and high-concept album art, Menomena has established a singular and unmistakable aesthetic. No one else sounds quite like this band. Following the release of their breakthrough album Friend and Foe and 2010’s acclaimed Mines, co-founder Brent Knopf departed to focus on his solo project, causing Justin Harris and Danny Seim—close friends since high school and now well into their second decade of making music together—to recast Menomena as a duo.
TRACKLISTING 1. Plumage 2. Capsule 3. Pique 4. Baton 5. Heavy Is As Heavy Does 6. Giftshoppe 7. Skintercourse 8. Tantalus 9. Don’t Mess With Latexas 10. One Horse
The result, Moms, explores both a new vulnerability and resiliency within Menomena, a band that’s taken change not as an excuse to opt out but instead as a catalyst for growth. It’s tragic and intimate, comic and endearing, personal and motivated. In 10 songs and just less than 50 minutes, Harris and Seim cast pop cascades into noise kaleidoscopes (“Baton”), chop and twist a melody until it becomes a big dance beat (“Capsule”), and build inescapable arrays of tension and texture that finally release (“Tantalus”). Opener “Plumage” couples its surge of energy with a cleverly playful study of sexuality, while “Pique” turns the same sort of seemingly impossible tessellated-rhythm tricks that have become a Menomena trademark. As a real, genuine kid, long before he became Kid Koala, Eric San wanted an E-mu SP-1200 sampler– the Ark of the Covenent of hip hop production, used by his idols and heroes and imbued with legendary, almost supernatural, audio powers by rap aficionados worldwide. Unfortunately, he worked out he would have to deliver around eight million newspapers to buy one. Now, having hit his thirties, Eric finally has the machine he always craved. Of course, music production has largely moved on, so Eric began working out what he could do with it - a kind of reverse engineering back to his childhood self. A little mucking around and it came to him – the blues was always about stripping music back to its bare essentials, which is exactly what the SP1200 does, too. Over three days he cut up and reassembled the bed tracks for “12 Bit Blues.” No sequencing software was used. Using the pads on the machine and a multitrack, Eric played each part of the tracks in real time, before finally returning and adding cuts over the top. The result is a really raw, immediate and strangely beautiful album, much like the music it draws on for its inspiration. In attempting to outplay and outthink the technology he is working with he revives the unworldly oddness of blues music before it became a staple of beer adverts and the jamfantasies of middle aged marketing executives. This is the music, ripped and scratched and distressed until all those souls sold down the crossroads rise up and send shivers down your spine. It’s that real and, yes, that made up. GENRE : POP/ROCK FILE UNDER: “S” Sea and Cake, The The Sea and Cake deliver an album with the freshness and energy of a new band, and the ease and musicianship that can only come with experience. Runner began as the companion piece to 2011’s The Moonlight Butterfly, and using that album’s sonic experimentations as a starting point for a new process of writing and recording, became something completely new. Songs that began as synthesizer experiments in Sam Prekop’s home studio were reimagined by the other members, and eventually recorded and mixed by John McEntire at Chicago’s Soma Studios. The result is an album that feels like a private travelogue. Start listening at one place, and end up some place else. Cherishing the unexpected mysteries around every corner. From Sam Prekop: “Normally I would ignore past efforts when writing something new, but this felt different, The Moonlight Butterfly was ripe for expansion. Keeping the butterfly in mind focused a direction and provided a good jumping off point. Between The Moonlight Butterfly and Runner, I wrote and recorded a soundtrack for a film called Pavilion. It was absolutely wonderful for a while not to know what I was doing, but working still, scrambling with purpose. I truly felt free to try almost anything. in completing a picture with sound, trying to record a nuance, the particulars became huge - to render a space, describe a time, follow a spell. Reaching in this direction has definitely informed the new record. I was interested in writing songs that started not with guitar but with synthesizer/sequencer ideas. The modular synth parts didn’t always make it through to the final recordings, but the influence is still there. On “Harps” for instance, that melody and structure could not have happened if I hadn’t played off the sequencer right at the beginning. Having the pieces start in my home studio, I became quite cavalier with them, painting with a new fat sloppy brush. The songs were feeling pleasantly out of control and I was hearing music unlike other material I had come up with before. The Sea and Cake worked remotely for quite a while on Runner. As a result, what the band brought was more reactionary, impulsive, since the foundation was already there. The pieces seemed able to absorb a new kind of risk taking. It was fascinating to hand over almost complete works and have the other members of the band have at it, rip up, reconfigure, reconsider. Just when I felt I couldn’t go further on a song, someone in the band would change it forever. I firmly believe in taking cues and direction as the material evolves. I’m never one to impose preconceptions on a record and feel the most interesting work is found, rather than predetermined.”

Almost two decades into its career, those are nice surprises for those who’ve been following along the whole way.” – Pitchfork “This group has remained relevant, inventive and damn good since 1994... Good music transcends throughout time, and The Sea and Cake is one of few that do it right.” – Filter “Uniquely inventive blend of lilting pop and obtuse artrock... It’s heartening to find them messing with the template long into their second decade” - Mojo

Canada’s hardest working super-group, The Souljazz Orchestra, return at full throttle this September with ‘Solidarity’, a new collaborative album featuring a range of unique artists from their country’s vibrant underground groove scene. Rooted in rhythmically rich musical traditions of the past, the collective have kept their eyes on the future, pushing the boundaries of soul, jazz and tropical styles with a set of heavyweight new songs, unified by a powerful message of positive social change. After the success of their last record, the all-acoustic, instrumental outing, ‘Rising Sun’, the Orchestra returns to electric, vocal-driven compositions on ‘Solidarity’, inviting in a selection of singers with whom they have collaborated at different times over the last decade. The album's cast includes singer, percussionist and songwriter El Hadji "Élage" M'baye, songwriter and guitarist Rômmel Texeira Ribeiro, vocalist and songwriter Slim Moore, brilliant jazz trumpeter Nicholas Dyson, versatile singer Amelia Leclair on backing vocals; and the full Souljazz Orchestra core complete the line-up, with vocal contributions by drummer / conguero Philippe Lafrenière and baritone saxophonist Ray Murray. The compositions that arose from the sessions are in a variety of Afro, Latin and Caribbean styles, all connected by a consistent thread of North American soul and jazz sensibilities, featuring lyrics sung in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Wolof. The plugged-in direction of the new album also provided the band with an excuse to dig out some of their dusty, forgotten electric instruments from the attic: an ancient transistor organ, pawn shop hollow-body electric guitars, & even an old Italian-made Elka electric piano rescued from a garbage can. The album was recorded onto a temperamental Tascam 8-track tape machine inherited from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police at a surplus sale. The resultant sound is gritty, low-budget and analogue and the musicianship is, as always, vice-tight. Now celebrating their 10th year, The Souljazz Orchestra continue their unrivalled run of fine albums with their newest addition, “International Soundclash”.
KEY POINTS • Solidarity marks a return to electric, vocal-driven compositions, with accomplished guest singers, and varied, eclectic instrumental choices. • The Souljazz Orchestra are now celebrating their 10th year together • The Souljazz Orchestra will be touring from September 2012, including extensive dates across Europe, Canada, and the US.

ORIENT NOIR A WEST-EASTERN DIVAN
Selected by Dr. Bertram Nickolay
Orient Noir presents a collection of tender oriental rhythms and mesmerising melodies, tastefully selected by the renowned music curator and collector Dr. Bertram Nickolay. Elegant Arabic-oriental traditions meet the rich heritage of Jewish-oriental music and create an east-west divan of 14 outstanding musical pieces. Orient Noir leads the listener on a magic carpet ride over a colourful landscape of oriental culture that, even today, seems different and unexplored to us. The west and south coasts of the Mediterranean sea are connected by ancient bonds - maybe this is the reason why the sound of the Orient touches the Western world so deeply. The musical kaleidoscope gives cultural insight into a region that has recently experienced a revolutionary awakening into a new era. Starting from the North African Maghreb via the Near and Middle East, the music enchants the listener with lively examples of how, much more than in Western culture, music is still deeply rooted in oriental culture and keeps flourishing at celebrations like weddings and religious festivities alike. Orient Noir features a variety of Nubian Wedding Dances, Turkish-Sephardic chants, and Oriental Dance music from Lebanon, as well as typical patterns of popular music like North African Chaabi music and electronic instruments finding their way into today's oriental music. Watcha Clan (Marseille / France) renew Ofra Haza's old Yemenite hymn and world pop-hit "Im Nin'Alu", Bi Kidude Baraka (Zanzibar) sings the melancholic Taarab classic "Pakistani" from Eastern Africa's shore to the Indian Ocean. Also included: from Beirut / Lebanon: Ihsan Al-Mounzer; from Cairo / Egypt: Mahmoud Fadl, Salwa Abou Greisha, Samy El Bably; from Jerusalem: Ruth Yaakov; from New York City: Frank London and Susan Sandler; from Oran und Marseille: Maurice El Médioni; from Rabat und Ashkalon: Emil Zrihan; from Vladicin Han / Serbia: Boban i Marko Marković. The Bonus title features Efendi‘s Garden's oriental Krautrock rarity from the 70s.

Breakthrough is the debut full-length album from the Gaslamp Killer, a manic and mystic trip through the mind of a madman. Resident DJ and co-founder of the mythic Low End Theory club night in Los Angeles, the Gaslamp Killer is known across the globe for his impeccable turntable skills and high-energy performances. He delivers the same fire to Breakthrough, a project pulled from within his soul that is his strongest musical statement yet. Blending California-inspired psych with widespread global influences, Breakthrough is a musical anachronism, an unconstrained compilation from a wandering spirit. Finding new clarity through human connections after years on the road, the Gaslamp Killer’s evolution as an artist continues with Breakthrough. Overcast with ominous tones, loose drums and contorted sounds, Breakthrough is much more than a collection of beats; it is a musical project that reflects the culmination of almost a decade’s worth touring and performing around the world. Laying his hands on production and live drums, the Gaslamp Killer brings together a potent cast of friends to contribute to the album. Featuring guest appearances by Gonjasufi, Adrian Younge, Dimlite, Daedelus, SAMIYAM, Computer Jay and more, Breakthrough is a journey of creative connection, a tribal ceremony loaded with a sense of fellowship that reflects the Gaslamp Killer’s devotion to the collective experience. Lacing the album with ancient dust, Gonjasufi lends his gritty voice to instantly grasping “Veins” and the easy, grainy groove of “Apparitions.” Finding a frequency of high-strung horror, “Flange Face (with Miguel AtwoodFerguson)” drops with a feeling of impending doom, a heaving monster with cinematic strings and meteors falling from the stars. “Impulse (with Daedelus)” immediately descends into madness, spinning out of control amidst wicked sound contraptions and a blurry, bass-driven melody. Named after the Gaslamp Killer’s grandfather, "Nissim (with Amir Yaghmai)" travels through a host of emotions, evolving from the solemn strums of a yiali tambur into a sunny tune that instantly transports you to Istanbul. “Seven Years of Bad Luck for Fun (with Dimlite)” slices the spine down the middle with chills, a cold-blooded tremor that congeals as it crawls through the shadows. Grabbing your breath through your guts and flinging off into the ether, “In the Dark”, is an encompassing track whose twisted strings and heavy horns overtake the album’s denouement with a shuddering glimpse of the end of the world.
17. In the Dark...
To his ever-expanding fanbase, the Gaslamp Killer is much more than a DJ or producer; he is a master crafter of the collective experience, a shaman of spiritual escape found by following the beats. The journey continues; turning 30 this year, the Gaslamp Killer has only scratched the surface of himself as an artist and a person. Resonating on a deeper level, Breakthrough is the Gaslamp Killer’s spirit shining through the haze, breaking through the foggy veil of singularity to find the human connection.

“Not just an oddity in the Ninja Tune stable, Fink should in fact be regarded as the jewel in its crown.” - Pop Matters After making the transition from world-class club DJ and electronic producer to widely acclaimed singer-songwriter, Fink’s 2011 album ‘Perfect Darkness’ further progressed an incredible musical journey for one of the UK’s most fascinating artists. Following a string of sell out tours in Europe, this Autumn, Fink will finally be hitting the US to undertake a tour which will see the artist perform at a range of venues throughout the country. This round of 13 dates will be taking it back to the basics: a stripped down set-up as a two-piece with his band-mate Tim Thornton on drums, guitar, and percussion. Fink’s forthcoming album - released September 18 ‘Wheels Turn Beneath My Feet,‘ is composed solely of live recordings from the last year, and serves as a taster of his trademark ferocious yet delicate live performance. PAUL WELLER On the heels of the announcement that Paul Weller will be the face of John Varvatos in the designer’s Fall 2012 worldwide advertising campaign comes“The Attic”, the third single from Paul Weller’s Critically acclaimed album, Sonik Kicks. It is a pop song from a future time somewhere in the past. As Weller himself puts it, “It’s like a 50s pop song, but revved up: like Helen Shapiro on gear. It’s got the pizzicato strings to it, but with that manic pace, too. Lyrically, it’s a bit lovelorn.” However you describe it, the track is a classic Weller pop song. The B-side is the soulful, previously unreleased song, “We Got A Lot”. This 7” single is only available in the US and it’s on orange vinyl!

FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE & UTOPIA PARKWAY NATIONAL RELEASE DATE: LP: 09.18.2012 Fountains of Wayne self-titled debut and the follow-up, Utopia Parkway, laid the foundation for the band’s reputation as masters of power pop, or as The Dean of Rock Critics, Robert Christgau, put it, “full-fledged art heroes”. These two albums are considered classics of the genre. Fountains of Wayne contains the standouts “Radiation Vibe”, “Sink to the Bottom”, “Please Don’t Rock Me Tonight”, as well as the ode to the suburban commuter, “Sick Day”. This is the first time Fountains of Wayne has been on vinyl since its initial release over 15 years ago. Utopia Parkway, available on vinyl for the first time ever, features, “Red Dragon Tattoo”, “Denise”, and, “Laser Show”. PITCHFORK described the album as, “suburbia perfectly captured by four suburbanites with suburban sounds.” And what better way to experience that sound than on viny!

Califone’s debut album Roomsound was originally released on CD in 2001 by Perishable and then reissued on CD in 2006 by Thrill Jockey. As part of our 20th Annivesary we are happy to offer Roomsound on the vinyl format for the very first time. Cut by Paul Gold at Salt Mastering and pressed on high quality virgin vinyl, Roomsound is presented in a deluxe custom silk-screened jacket with an art-worked inner sleeve and free download coupon. Roomsound covers the same rustic, slightly ramshackle back forty that Tim Rutili has been ploughing through since his previous band Red Red Meat. Only this time the tilled bedrock unveils the most vividly colored, luring crop of songs Rutili has ever harvested. The sleepy, country-blues picking and autumnal backwoods melodies are accented with striking splashes of electronic tone color, obsolete keyboards and off-kilter percussion. Lyrically, Roomsound penetrates the breath of pirates, poison apples at a tango contest and the waiting room between death and canonization where missionaries have quit and 19th-century whores have been rescued for all the wrong reasons. Masterfully engineered by Brian Deck, the album is vaulted far beyond the sum of its parts.
Who’s Your New Professor was the second solo album from The Sea and Cake’s Sam Prekop. Originally released in 2005 the LP version is back as part of our 20th anniversary vinyl reissue campaign. Pressed on high quality virgin vinyl the LP edition comes with a free download coupon. On Who’s Your New Professor Prekop used a variety of unconventional guitar tunings and actively stepped away from familiar vocal and rhythmic patterns. He goes on to explain: “I was consciously trying to get away from the Brazilian influence. It did seep in occasionally, but I was careful to approach the record differently. This time around there seems to be a curious blues quality to many of the pieces which has never happened before.” Like his self-titled debut, the songs on Who’s Your New Professor were created in Prekop’s Chicago apartment, and were then taken to John McEntire’s (Tortoise, The Sea and Cake) Soma Studio in Chicago. The band of Josh Abrams (bass - Town & Country, Sticks & Stones, The Roots), Archer Prewitt (guitar - The Sea and Cake, Sof’ Boy), Chad Taylor (drums - Chicago Underground, Sticks & Stones), and Rob Mazurek (cornet - Chicago Underground, Isotope 217) was reassembled, and Who’s Your New Professor was born.

GENRE : COUNTRY/ROCK FILE UNDER: “I” Irwin, Catherine “F” Freakwater RELEASE DATE : September 18, 2012 NO EXPORT Catherine Irwin’s second solo album is a showcase for her considerable TRACK LISTING: writing skills both musically and lyrically as well as her singular performance style. Little Heater combines raw and unadorned vocals with lush countrypolitan-style productions: gorgeous string sections, pedal steel guitar and dense layers of vocal harmonies. Lyrics follow the themes of old-time music -- loss, despair, self-destruction and delusion -- but the references and turns of phrase are entirely modern and entirely Catherine’s. As she did on 2002’s spare and haunting Cut Yourself a Switch, or as she has done as the primary songwriter in Freakwater, Catherine aims her laser wit into the dark corners of the human condition. Little Heater was recorded and produced by Tara Jane ONeil (Rodan, Ida) in Woodstock, New York in September 2011. The acoustic instruments and vocals were captured with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a sound that is relaxed, organic and immediate. Shimmering electric guitars and high-lonesome pedal steel wash over Catherine’s voice while heartbeat steady bass drum drifts in from the next room. Lush and atmospheric, not unlike the way it sounds when you are alone and crying down at the bottom of a well. Tara plays drums and numerous other instruments. She also lends her voice to “Sinner Saves a Saint”, a duet written by the late, great cartoonist John Callahan. Elizabeth Mitchell, Daniel Littleton and Jean Cooke -- all members of Ida -- lend their considerable vocal and instrumental talents. Rounding out the guest contributions, Marc Orleans lays down some classic pedal steel solos and Bonnie Prince Billy offers up his keening vocals on a few tracks, gently complimenting Catherine’s southern gothic tales.

SALES POINTS Little Heater is the brand new solo album from Catherine Irwin (member of Freakwater for over twenty years) Little Heater features guest appearances from Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Tara Jane ONeil (Rodan, Retsin), Elizabeth Mitchell and Daniel Littleton (Ida), Marc Orleans (D Charles Speer & the Helix, Sunburned Hand of the Man), and Jean Cook (Jon Langford, The Mekons) Press being handled by Pitch Perfect PR Catherine will play select shows in support Neko Case, Kelly Hogan, Califone, and Jolie Holland have all covered Catherine’s songs and Hazel Dickens, Steve Earle, Randy Newman, Indigo Girls and M. Ward number among Catherine’s fans
Over the years, Irwin’s songs have been covered by artists including Neko Case, Kelly Hogan, Califone and Jolie Holland. Neko covered Catherine’s “Hex” on The Tigers Have Spoken, and “Dusty Groove” is the opening track on Kelly Hogan’s major label debut. It should come as no surprise that musicians like the late Hazel Dickens, Steve Earle, Randy Newman, Indigo Girls and M. Ward number among Catherine’s fans. As Freakwater, Catherine and Janet Bean virtually paved the way for what is now known as Alt-Country. There was no indie equal when they released their first album in 1989, at least a year prior to the first albums by bands such as Uncle Tupelo who soon joined them in spearheading a movement.
Freakwater’s 1993 classic Feels Like the Third Time was re-issued for Record Store Day this year and sold out in pre-order
Little Heater is Catherine’s finest recording to date, a stand out in her remarkable body of work. Whether the landscape is urban or rural, personal or political, the terrain over which Catherine drags her pen is dark, but paved with diamonds.

GENRE : ROCK FILE UNDER: “T” Thank You
Release Date: Sept 18, 2012 NO EXPORT TRACK LISTING: Baltimore’s Thank You return with the Mother’s Nose 7”, a constellation map of power and imagination from one of the most important acts on today’s art-rock scene. The band’s first 2012 release finds Thank You broadening their palette with vibraphone, mandolin, and acoustic guitar, and growing from trio to quartet with the addition of bassist Steve Santillan (who previously worked with Nicolaidis and Bouyoucas in the Monitor Records band More Dogs). “Mother’s Nose” delivers a next-level articulation of the tensionand-release sound the group developed on 2011’s album Golden Worry. It’s an incandescent eruption of organized panic, propelled by shimmering guitars, churning rhythms, and esoteric chants. Yet as this A-side feels like the ultimate expression of Thank You’s approach thus far, B-side “The Whale” situates our ears within a new orbit altogether. Here, opiated melodies float over beats more click than clamor, coalescing into an Eno-esque soundscape of harmonic waves and secret horizons. Together, these songs form a multi-dimensional statement of post-punk purpose as rigorous as it is concise. Both new tracks were recorded at Tempo House in Baltimore with Jared Paolini and Craig Bowen (Lungfish, Growing). The one-of-a-kind, handmade covers for this 7” are the creation of Baltimorebased friends of the band, including members of Beach House, Zomes, Future Islands, and Double Dagger.

Each 7” features completely unique and hand-made cover art created by Thank You and their many friends in Baltimore. 7” cover artists include Victoria Legrand (Beach House), Asa Osborne (Zomes, Lungfish), William Cashion (Future Islands), Post Typography (Double Dagger), Elena Jonston (Future Islands album art) and artist Andrew Liang The two songs on this 7” were recorded with Jared Paolini and Craig Bowen (Lungfish, Growing) in Baltimore “the band’s maximalist volume, minimalist repetition and potent drum sounds combine to form a free-rock dynamism that makes all your atoms stand at attention.” - XLR8R “Golden Worry could be the band’s pinnacle, successfully capturing the unassuming journeys of melody and fusion of industrial-tribal rhythms into a package accessible outside of their live performance. Vocals are now far more prominent, and are precisely interlaced to create and add new depths for the band.” – B More Music Blog “An instrumental conversation that consistently creates and destroys melody throughout the song... an album that makes assertive artistic choices and keeps you wondering where it will go next.” - Filter

Samuel James
File under Blues
And For The Dark Road Ahead The best acoustic bluesman in America! howlin’ the blues
Comments on Samuel James:
Samuel James is a performer of stunningly singular talent. A master of fingerstyle, slide, banjo, harmonica, and piano, this phenom has just turned thirty. With musical influences ranging from Skip James and Sonny Terry to Gus Cannon and Charley Patton, such understanding of pre-war blues is rarely embodied in the music of one person.
“James is already a true master and this is one of the best debut albums that I have ever heard." David Blue, NetRhythms, July 2008
“There are so many influences here, and I’ve probably missed a lot of them, but I would hazard a guess at Robert Johnson, Big Joe Williams, Son House, Bob Dylan, Bukka White, and Fred McDowell.”
But Samuel James is not a revivalist. His songwriting is unparalleled in contemporary blues. His writing is descended from the long forgotten art of the songster. While musically one could compare him to Patton or Cannon, his writing goes in another direction entirely. His songs are often written as linear stories, novels in musical format: O. Henry meets Mose Allison.
Terry Clear, Blues Bytes, Nov. 2008
“Samuel James is like a time machine— the same one that keeps Son House and Mississippi John Hurt traveling back to the public consciousness.” Portland Phoenix

Samuel James’ third CD! Produced by Juno Award-winning producer, David Travers-Smith. PR handled by Michael McClune in LA. Samuel’s first CD received amazing reviews— with reviewers comparing him to legends like Mississippi John Hurt, Robert Johnson, Son House, and others.
“Beyond the standard 'squeeze my lemon' kind of blues lyric, this is more like O. Henry put to music by Son House. OK, that may be pushing it, but there's more to James' lyrics than repetition, and you should know that going in. Johnny Winter comments on his 'great voice and a great playing style! Traditional blues done with a hip twist.' Johnny should know.” David Kidney, Greenman Review
“James is still in his 20s, but he already has a leg up on Keb' Mo' and other more established acoustic bluesmen. He's a terrific finger-picking guitarist and promising banjo player, with his feet serving as an ample percussion section." Jeff Johnson, Chicago Sun Times

CARS & TRAINS
WE ARE ALL FIRE FFINC041 CD/LP : CARS & TRAINS WE ARE ALL FIRE RELEASE DATE : SEPTEMBER 18, 2012
The concept of a family is one of those ever-morphing ideas that is constantly growing and contracting as we stumble through life. Sometimes that means joy; far too often, there's a great deal of pain involved. But whether it is the people that raised us, or the friends and loved ones that picked up where the birth family dropped the ball, we have a family we can call our own. It is in this spirit that Tom Filepp created his third full-length album We Are All Fire recorded under the name Cars & Trains. The idea was to create a narrative about family—a search for identitythrough and a family—a search for identity and a personal narrative expressed electroacoustic pop—that pulled in as many members of Filepp's musical family as he could get. Though you might not be able to pick out their individual contributions, sprinkled throughout the album is the work of fellow Portland musicians like the Future Historians, Alameda, and the Ascetic Junkies, as well as Filepp's labelmates Astronautalis, Rickolus, and Ceschi Ramos. From that foundational idea, Filepp found confidence to explore the darker crevices of his musical psyche. Not with the intention of wallowing in the muck, but to shine some light and clear out the cobwebs, all through the skein of an Odyssey-like narrative that wends in some indelible imagery taken from the natural world. Stars, wind, waves, birds, trees, and, of course, fire all play prominent roles. Like any great songwriter can, Filepp connects the personal and the universal beautifully. You can hear how these songs affect him through his poignant and gently piercing vocal performances. He then balances out the emotion these songs stir up with fluttering downtempo beats, delicate acoustic playing, and the inclusion of strings, horns, and smatterings of electronic noise. We Are All Fire is both a question and an answer. Filepp seeks to find out what family means in our digital age, and finds the connections he was looking for both in his own past and in his present. The key word in the album title is "we," and that includes you too. "a beautifully convoluted sound forged from the combination of the natural and the unnatural." -CMJ

NINJA TUNE presents ACID RAGGA 7" RELEASE FOR SEPTEMBER 18TH THE BUG CAN'T TAKE THIS NO MORE Cat #: ACIDRA001 Format: 7 Barcode: 5021392744162 Box Lot: 20 Label: Acid Ragga Packaging: Card vinyl sleeve, Neon yellow vinyl SRP: $9.99 Ninja Tune presents : The Bug's Acid Ragga 7" label "After 'London Zoo' I wanted to come with something intense and fresh, and the ACID RAGGA label is it." Kevin Martin, The Bug The Bug is returning. After dropping the hugely successful London Zoo album in 2008 ("Hovers immaculate between beauty and fear" The Wire,) he's back with a Roland TB-303 in hand, and an 808 under his arm, detonating a new genre and sub-label : Acid Ragga. But this isn't your parents second coming of the summer of love acid. This time there will be no smiley faces, no ecstasy, and no future. The world is truly fucked and Kevin Martin can always be relied on to soundtrack armageddon time. Rather, this dystopian acid takes influence from pioneers like Stakker's 'Humanoid' , Plastikman, Phuture's 'Cocaine/Your Only Friend', Aphex Twin etc and twists it into Kevin's own perverted take on classic dancehall. Harkening back to when Sleng Teng refined Jamaican music as we know it, the Acid Ragga imprint will forever scar the face of raggamuffin reggae. The first release is "Can't Take This No More" which finds the legendary Daddy Freddy slowed down to a menacing crawl, on a countdown to self destruction. Whilst the flip ft. Inga Copeland (Hype Williams) on "Rise Up", sounding like Donna Summer on smack, crooning inna deeper shade of blue. This debut Acid Ragga release will be swiftly followed by single 2 by The Bug, "Ganja Baby" ft. Daddy Freddy, which is a body breaking, robo-raggamuffin, weed anthem (think 'Witness the Fitness' remixed by Richie Hawtin in cold crush mode). Watch for a continuing series of Acid Ragga singles throughout the year. Leading up to the next Bug album proper 'Angels & Devils'. Names that The Bug is working with on the project, in addition to Inga Copeland and Daddy Freddy include Death Grips, Gonjasufi, Grouper, JK Flesh (Godflesh/Jesu), The Spaceape, Flowdan + Warrior Queen.

ABOUT THE BAND Since 2006, Empty Orchestra has been making music that is both catchy and thought provoking, with masterfully played and crafted songs built on a refreshing combination of intellectual and visceral elements. Started by Stephen Wisniewski, Empty Orchestra is comprised of a group of eclectic musicians and equally unique instrumentation — from banjo to flute, organ to melodica, the music reflects a truly collaborative songwriting effort. The band’s music draws comparisons to Ryan Adams, The Hold Steady, Cursive and Tom Waits.
ABOUT THE ALBUM Empty Orchestra’s new album for Pentimento Music Co., “One More Time, All Together Now…,” is a powerful new musical statement that is at once diverse and cohesive. Produced over the course of almost two years, this collection of songs was recorded in a variety of spaces in Chicago, Illinois, and in the band’s hometown of Flint, Michigan—including living rooms, bank vaults, basements, abandoned buildings, and professional recording studios—with longtime engineer and founding member Mark Michalik (the Swellers, Into It. Over It, We Are The Union). Over the album’s 12 diverse songs, Empty Orchestra’s legion of players (a dozen members contribute to recording, and the band operates as a musical collective in the studio) simultaneously define and defy labels like “Americana,” “punk,” “folk” and others with expert musicianship and impeccable songwriting. So what is this album “about?” Well, the human condition, of course. The Big Things via the little things. It’s about the possibilities and limitations of community. It’s about the beautiful and dangerous act of performance. It’s about the politics and poetics of “home,” and what it means to be a part of a city or a band or a family. It’s about love, and labor unions, and violence. So what does this album “sound like?” Well, it sometimes sounds like well-crafted indie / folk-rock—songs like “Broken Record” and “Trust Me” feature warm chords, pedal steel and harmonica. “The Audience” and “Lo and Behold!” on the other hand, are taut and angular, and hum with dark intensity. And acousticbased songs like “No Such Place” and “We Have Ways of Making You Talk” deliver heartfelt yet cerebral lyrics with beautiful harmonies.

EROL ALKAN
ANOTHER ʺBUGGED OUTʺ MIX & ʺBUGGED INʺ SELECTION At the end of 2006, Erol Alkan was at a crossroads. He’d been voted DJ of the year by Mixmag. He’d made landmark, expectation-defying remixes for bands he loved: a crunching “glam racket” reworking of ‘Do You Want To’ for Franz Ferdinand, a wonderfully wistful reinterpretation of Hop Chip’s ‘Boy From School’, a psychedelic take on Scissor Sisters’ ‘I Don’t Feel Like Dancing’ and a genre-defining reworking of Justice’s ‘Waters Of Nazereth’. He was about to close Trash, the Monday night indie disco that had somehow morphed into the most adventurous, influential and glamorous club night in the world without changing its attitude, musical philosophy – or ever charging over six pounds on the door. Other triumphs lay a little further in the past. In 2006, he supported Daft Punk for their live return at Global Gathering at their own personal request. The year before, he did the same for Madonna at Koko in Camden with a DJ set which she used as an intro tape on her subsequent world tour. In 2002, he’d lent some muscle to another icon, creating the bootleg of ‘Blue Monday’ and ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ that Kylie performed at the Brits in 2002: the culmination of a craze for “bastard pop” hybrids he’d been instrumental in creating alongside long-term kindred spirits Soulwax. Then there were his DJ sets at clubs and festivals around the world, in which Erol’s unerring instinct for playing the right record at the right time brought hardened clubbers and alternative music obsessives together in abandoned celebration of brilliant music. Though he started DJing in dance clubs in earnest in 2001 after being invited to play at Bugged Out, Erol still considers himself an outsider in that scene. “Unfortunately, I never had that seismic moment of hearing someone like Carl Craig DJ in ’96” he says. “I feel as passionately about the Manic Street Preachers as people in dance music do about Kraftwerk. That’s where my DNA is different, which I’m really happy about, because that’s the thing that’s hopefully made me different to other DJs.” Erol has started playing epic annual sets every Easter at Bugged Out – 2012’s was nine hours long. “I was slightly disenchanted by the way support DJs would play like they were playing Wembley to 10,000 people,” he says. “I wanted to build an evening through the music and be able to be my own support. This way, I bought complete freedom to proceedings, as anyone who came would be aware that I would play across my entire musical spectrum, and it would differ to a usual 2 hour set.” All 1,200 tickets sold out in advance. After his hugely successful Bugged Out mix from 2005 he’ll be dropping his 2nd Bugged mix this summer. A wide selection of music, with both sides featuring music from 4 decades. An impressive effort indeed!

A story within a story, Blood Rushing is a glimpse into the world of Blushing, a heteronym of the artist Josephine Foster. A rock-ballet chantĂŠ, the music is set to a Pueblo drum's metapulsing Pan-American heartbeat. Recorded in Colorado by Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes) with the collaboration of her partner Spanish guitarist Victor Herrero, and musicians Paz Lenchantin (The Entrance Band), Heather Trost (A Hawk and a Hacksaw) and Ben Trimble (Fly Golden Eagle)."Cleansing. The sanitation of blood, even. Sometimes I hear my own flesh and it terrifies me - it's a sonic confirmation of everything we believe in. It's natures heart beating harder than any story I couldn't have written on my own. Last evening I wanted to cry - I couldn't, because the charm was diffused over the six or seven hours of dusk. Then I danced it off to the shaking of the pipes. For some time now I've been enchanted by these sounds. Again, because of the magic show: this one, of generosity, the kind that comes from sight. Clarity. I met a younger self the other day, seeing things just the way I do from the park bench. When I left her it was the sadness that makes Grandmother cry to me in the kitchen of feeling all her children grow and the speed of time in the in light of how heavy and how fast we grow. It's the same heaviness that this town reeks off - but in an estranged way that makes everyone nobody's child (and every-body, their neighbour's child). Since the fall of my last defence, clarity means listening to organs. Most of the time I feel like I have black crayon strewn on my face and a sort of odd dental fixture and so does everybody else here. And so we all treat each others' magic with the same kind of anonymous respect. A muted awe. Josephine's voice is not metaphoric. Nor is it a spell. Blood Rushing is as native as my flesh and yours." In September, Critical Heights will be releasing the new full-length from Brooklyn's duo Talibam! Previously known for their avant-jazz, experimental rock leanings, ?Puff Up the Volume? sees Talibam! turning their considerable talents towards an album of synth-popinfused, comedy-soaked ?No School Rap?. Having collectively been in bands with members of Battles, TV on the Radio and Grizzly Bear, the pair of Matt Mottel and Kevin Shea have joined 'Brooklyn's Finest' and made an album of hook riddled pop star bombast. Puff Up the Volume', is Talibam!'s 'NO SCHOOL' Rap debut. They like to say ' if you went to rap school' you wasted your money. This epic record is chock-full of party anthems and raw emotional verse, solidifying the duo as a skilled production team. Talibam!'s “Puff Up the Volume” represents the outcome of poetic circumstance. Drummer Kevin Shea's big toe was crushed during a gong accident in 2009 forcing him to play bass drum with his left foot for the rest of a tour and the subsequent recording session engineered by Dirty Projector's touring sound engineer Etienne Foyer in Paris. The circumstance 'liberated' Talibam! from their previous ethos with drummer Kevin Shea bumping a BIG BEAT flavour along side Matt Mottel's spicy Mini Moog mastery. "Puff Up the Volume' will enter your head and stay there. The craft in songwriting, the focus on synth tone, the forceful funk of the drums and the verbal 'epuffianies' spit by Kevin Shea and Matt Mottel make this album a contender for 'album of the year.' Each song is a gold nugget ready for mass appeal. Get ready to breathe DEEP AND 'PUFF UP THE VOLUME'. Tracks: 1. Jimmys From the 49th 2. Zombie From Albequrque 3. I Want All Your Money 4. AND THEN there was Angel. If there was one band that should have reached the heights of superstardom then surely it ought to have been Angel. Meticulously assembled as part of an advanced master plan to create the perfect rock ‘n roll animal, Angel’s manifest destiny revolved around two key components: that’s killer musicianship and killer looks. Seasoned players all, their arrival on the Los Angeles rock scene certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons in a world crying out for something fresh, original and very different. Based in Los Angeles, and signed to the irascible Casablanca label (home to Kiss and Funkadelic). Angel’s debut album was issued in 1975 and received instant approval from anyone hip to the trip. Musically the focus was firmly on a sort of pioneering seventies mash-up of progressive and melodic hard rock, spearheaded by the extraordinary operatic vocals of Frank DiMino and the wildly dexterous keyboard virtuosity of Gregg Giuffria. Produced by Englishmen Derek Lawrence (Deep Purple, Wishbone Ash) and session guitarist extraordinaire Big Jim Sullivan, the album is treasure trove of surprises and includes several songs that have since gone on to become standard bearers in the star spangled world of melodic-rock mayhem. For categorical proof look no further than the straight from the hip attack of ‘Rock & Rollers’, ‘On And On’ and, arguably the greatest pomp-rock creation of all time, ‘Tower’, a pumping behemoth of a track with keyboards and guitars locked in mortal combat. No home should be without a copy. Track listing: Tower; Long Time; Rock & Rollers; Broken Dreams; Mariner; Sunday Morning; On & On; Angel (Theme)

Special Limited Deluxe Collector’s Edition / Fully re-mastered sound shaped from 24 BIT digital technology / 16 page full colour booklet, 4,000 word essay, enhanced artwork, memorabilia, rare photos and full band involvement. THERE HAVE been many great bands that didn’t receive the level of recognition due to them, but none have been more deserving than Angel. Cruelly denied the opportunity to bask in the spotlight of success, Angel’s story is a tear-jerker in the grandest tradition. A great band, astonishing musicianship, sensational songs and a stunning stage show but for some reason doomed to cult status, maybe because they were - in effect - wildly ahead of their time and far beyond the realms of previously known parameters. ‘Helluva Band’ was Angel’s second album, and a record that took their brand of adventurous pomp-rock to astonishing levels. Unafraid of throwing everything and the kitchen sink into their music, they reached a new level of achievement which allowed every member of the band to excel at their craft. Singer Frank DiMino in particular, unleashes one of the definitive vocal performances of the era, an ostentatious operatic style that thrilled audiences back then and still continues to make its mark to this day. Originally issued in 1976,and produced by British ex pats Derek Lawrence and Big Jim Sullivan in Los Angeles, the albums contains a clutch of 24 Karat showstoppers, including the epic ‘Feelings’, ‘Mirrors’, ‘Pressure Point’ and ‘The Fortune’, a progressive pomp-rock watershed with all the trimmings you might reasonably expect from such a genre defining band. Absolutely essential. Track listing: Feelin’ Right; The Fortune; Anyway You Want It; Dr. Ice; Mirrors; Feelings; Pressure Point; Chicken Soup; Angel Theme

Special Limited Deluxe Collector’s Edition / Rare original Japanese mix and sequence / Fully remastered sound shaped from 24 BIT digital technology / 16 page full colour booklet, 4,000 word essay, enhanced artwork, memorabilia, rare photos and full band involvement. IT WAS a brilliant concept. Five immaculately coffered musicians dressed in virginal white and playing a flamboyant combination of progressive pomp rock with all the genre trimmings that you could possibly desire. T Their stage show was equally as breath-taking, taking in everything from holograms to spectacular magic stunts. It was as if PT Barnum himself had formed a rock band and created the ultimate spectacle. ‘On Earth As It Is In Heaven’ was Angels’ third album and showcases the band expanding their horizons by taking a more directly melodic hard rock path, but one with hooks and riffs to the fore. Just because the music was harder and edgier, isn’t to say that they had abandoned their progressive roots altogether as Gregg Giuffria’s keyboard work will testify. Produced by seasoned sound man Eddie Kramer (Hendrix, Zeppelin), the songs here display a raw edge that provides guitarist Punky Meadows with a platform to unleash some of his best riffs, whilst vocalist extraordinaire Frank DiMino soars to new operatic heights. Songs such as ‘Can You Feel It’, ‘Cast The First Stone’ and ‘White Lightning’ explode with a sense of urgency that suggests the band were scaling new heights of creativity and feeling all the better for it. Oh, and check out the band’s logo – it reads the same upside down, back to front and in a mirror. Oud Vibrations brings together two complete albums from the late 1950s, which sit at the meeting point of eastern and western cultures, instruments and styles. Featuring Ahmed Abdul-Malik’s super rare ‘East Meets West’, (an evocative tapestry of structured raga-styled music set off against some classic jazz horn breaks) and the rare debut album ‘Come With Me To The Casbah’ from Charles ‘Chick’ Ganimian (a hybrid of Armenian and American cultures that touched on rock ‘n’ roll with the single ‘Daddy Lolo’ as Ganim And The Asia Minors, which was a minor US radio hit.) Remastered and with sleevenotes written by MOJO magazine’s Dave Henderson, these vintage buried treasures from two unsung heroes of jazz create an intriguing set of sounds that should appeal to lovers of space age pop and exotica as well as jazz enthusiasts and fans of Yusef Lateef, Paul Horn, Alice Coltrane and Terry Riley. Cross-cultural unions and collisions of musical instruments always bring about intriguing other worldly ambiences. The oud’s distinctive sound, and its traditional swirling, percussive backdrop was a malleable commodity that dovetailed neatly into Jazz music and early rock ‘n’ roll. It sounded truly different when it was introduced to tackle old standards. The instrument itself is a pear-shaped stringed affair, which looks like a sawn-off psychedelic guitar. The late great Ahmed Abdul-Malik was part of the New York Jazz scene in the mid-‘50s, where his double bass acted as foil for Art Blakey, John Coltrane, Zoot Sims and Thelonius Monk, among many others. Of Sudanese descent, he had a penchant for the roots music of his on ‘East Meets West’ from 1959. The music is rich and heady, a multi-layered set of tonal grooves that are wrapped tight beneath the melody lines. Charles ‘Chick’ Ganimian was an Armenian American who played only record as a bandleader was ‘Come With Me To The Casbah’; an exotic slice of mystery, which comprises tracks nine to 20 in this collection. The album features the hit single ‘Daddy Lolo’ as well as a superb reading of classics ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ and ‘My Funny Valentine’. Like Abdul-Malik’s album, it’s super rare in its original vinyl form, an even deeper, swirling set of textures that are completely enveloping. Ahmed Abdul-Malik’s ability to fuse Western Jazz with the driving rhythms created by his oud that seems almost sequenced, are startling. Ganimian’s swing phrasings added to his sensuous, evocative song structures make both of these sets landmark recordings, where two cultures clashed and the result was a supremely different kind of music. Formed in 2005, instrumental 4 piece Maybeshewill have been busy building a significant worldwide fan-base. Their first two albums received widespread critical acclaim including glowing reviews and coverage from NME, Kerrang, Rock Sound, Drowned In Sound and BBC Radio 1 in UK. The band achieved great success through a loyal and enthusiastic fan base built by constant touring and word of mouth. Initially focusing on the UK they have quickly discovered a huge demand for them in Europe and the rest of the world as word has spread virally through the internet. ‘I was here for a moment, then I was gone ‘ is the band’s third album and first for London UK label Function Records. Released in UK and Europe in 2011 the record will be their first US release when it comes out this coming September. The album is intended as the soundtrack to an as yet unimagined film; widescreen cinematic highs and haunting moments of quiet played off against intense, almost brutally pounding guitars. They've maintained an intense touring schedule that has seen them play sold out shows across the UK, Europe, Russia and Japan and more recently China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Following several festival appearances across UK and Europe the band will be touring Eastern Europe in September before a month long tour across the US in October. With glowing press for the new album and sold out shows across the UK, Europe, and Asia under their belt they've never been more confident in the year ahead. And so onto the US! "They’ve the potential to become a domestic instrumental act that truly matters" ― Drowned In Sound "Most bands couldn't juggle the collective noise of Mogwai and Glassjaw without exploding... These songs are extremely quick to kick your teeth in when you least expect it" ― Kerrang (KKKK) Tracklisting: 1/ Opening 2/ Take this to Heart 3/ Red Paper Lanterns 4/ Critical Distance 5/ Accolades6/ An End to Camaraderie 7/ Words for Arabella 8/ Farewell to Sarajevo 9/ Relative Minors 10/ To The Skies from a hillside

On 'Sebenza', meaning ‘work’ in the Zulu language, South Africa meets South London as the LV trio of producers hook up with three of their favourite South African MCs, Okmalumkoolkat from Dirty Paraffin, Spoek Mathambo and MC / producer duo Ruffest. The first sessions from the album started two years ago, when one of LV went over to Jo-burg to DJ and hooked up with Spoek Mathambo on a tip off from a mutual friend. One thing led to another and they were introduced to Okmalumkoolkat, and on a later visit, to the duo of Sello and Max who make up Ruffest. Their talents as MCs and infectious characters are what drew LV to them, and by happy coincidence, the synthesis of their vocals and LV's music form something fresh, unique and playful. Across the album, LV's music is 'zingy'; analogue synths digitally propelled by multisided rhythms, that take off from the interzone between UK funky and kwaito house's bouncy rhythms, but detour much wider through the spidery, digital soca / kuduro of title track 'Sebenza', the afro-garage of ‘Animal Prints’, the scuttling triplets of ‘DL' and ‘Limb’, the half speed grime of ‘Zulu Compurar’, the old school electro hip hop of ‘International Pansula’ and the Prince-like synth melodies on closer 'Ultando Lwaka’. The album shares a palette of sounds, but each track stretches those sources into different templates, each custom built with the MC’s flow and topic in mind, slowed down and sped up where needed. The three MC’s styles differ from each other dramatically. Okmalumkoolkat shifts schizophrenically through different characters; he’s an Afro-futurist tech nerd on ‘Zulu Compurar', a wired gangster on ‘International Pansula‘, and on ‘Spitting Cobra’, a shapeshifting bad man. Ruffest mix shout outs to the thugs on ‘Hustla’, boast their uniqueness on ‘Nothing Like Us’ , bring the party on ‘Thatha’ and get love sick on ‘Uthando Lwakho’. On ‘Limb’ Spoek Mathambo’s rhymes dissolve into the rhythm like a holographic James Brown, while ‘Work’ answers Okmalumkoolkat’s ‘Sebenza’ with instructional cheerleading over clicking beats. ‘Sebenza’ is a joyful listen, refreshing in its disregard for musical and verbal cliché. It brings to attention a handful of the awesome talent of South Africa’s young generation of MCs over the finest productions of South London. TRACK LIST : 01. Sebenza ft Okmalumkoolkat 02. 14 track album on swimming pool blue vinyl. I was thinking about instrumental music and whether it could truly be about something. I was thinking about how classical, jazz and the avant-garde often group music together under conceptual titles and themes. Isn’t a lot of this music about music itself? Isn’t instrumental music literally about the unspeakable, the indescribable? My name is Darren Hayman and I have made an instrumental album about Britain’s open air swimming pools; it’s called ‘Lido’. If I am known or liked for anything at all in my career then it is for my lyrics. I see words as incisive, accurate tools, when used correctly. I don’t want my words to paint vague canvasses; I want them to make detailed, forensic technical drawings. In my own listening, however, I have moved more and more towards instrumental music. I enjoy the heavenly fog of the ECM label. I love following the unpredictability of John Coltrane’s reckless career. I adore roots dub reggae – it makes me feel safe and calm. Instrumental music has given me something that has been missing from my listening for a few years. Cautiously, over the last few years, I started to amass recordings of my instrumental compositions. When I had five that I thought were good, I needed a title that might pull these sunny, open tunes together; I thought of ‘Lido’. From that point onwards I tried to think about what it would be to write music with a specific setting in mind. I tried to write the tunes in my head, while visiting the individual pools. I wanted to make music that sounded half remembered but purposeful. I went to the road where one of the pools used to be. I recorded nothing but the faint rumble of traffic and put in my tune. My album 'Lido' is about open air swimming pools and something else as well. It's just impossible to say what it is exactly. - Darren Hayman February 2012 Track Listing: 1. London Fields 2. Jethro Fox is a Biblically named singer from a family of Atheists, and his celestial music is set to light up 2012. Brought up in Colchester, Essex and sharing a proud 6th Form College music teacher with Damon Albarn, Jethro moved to Liverpool to study and has since become a central character in a once again thriving music community. A multi-instrumentalist, he has played in most of the new bands in the area’s resurgent scene, which is centered on the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. Now playing under his own name, Jethro’s own music is urgent and life affirming in a manner that belies the rainy gray of Liverpool. Characterized by his alreadydistinctive golden harmonies, and the echo of school halls and cavernous churches, his music suggests a deep affinity with the classic symphonic pop of The Beach Boys, Roy Orbison and Grizzly Bear. A few months ago, Jethro posted his first track online, ‘Before’. Received to great acclaim (“One of the most exciting musicians on the planet”, John Kennedy, XFM”), Jethro was subsequently invited to record a Steve Lamacq Maida Vale Session for 6 Music: an almost unprecedented opportunity for an artist yet to release a record. That’s all set to change with the release of his debut single, ‘Blinding Light’, through Tough Love Records (Weird Dreams, Girls Names) on 20th August. Backed by ‘Lonely Sound’, it’s the perfect introduction into Jethro’s immaculately conceived world. "A staggering set of vocal chords...there’s not a great deal of ground that it fails to cover." This is Fake DIY. “Hotter than the surface of the sun…One of the most exciting musicians on the planet.” John Kennedy, XFM

BOOTSTRAPS STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 18, 2012
Their debut has built momentum from what Liza calls an "instantly likable, intelligent and signature" sound that the Examiner labeled as "Americana-laced gorgeousness" and Paste Magazine paralleled to Ray LaMontayne, with hints of Bon Iver and Band of Horses . After being named Hydrogen Magazine's “Band to Watch” singer Jordan Beckett spoke about their unique recording process. "We tracked the album live, the old fashioned way" with help from Richard Dodd (Civil Wars, Kings of Leon) who enhanced this vision in the studio. The singer concluded, "Live recording as a full band is just that, it's alive, making it possible to capture moments and the feeling that makes music music." That feeling has translated on ABC, NBC and FOX shows and at the Nashville Film Festival where the band took home the prestigious 'Best Music in a Film" award. These accolades have merely set the stage for their debut album to break out beyond music industry insiders. A bittersweet fact for the "Morning Becomes Eclectic" DJ, "I'm glad it will find a larger audience but I will miss the feeling that Bootstraps is my go-to secret recording." And it’s no wonder...some secrets are too good to go unheard.
