Songs For Singles

Songs for Singles, Torche's upcoming addition to a six year stretch of welldeserved lionization within the world of progressive metal, is basically a super solid collection of singles (though I'm pretty sure the title actually refers to one's legal interpersonal status) written by, and therefore in, the instantly appealing songwriting style developed by the band… Now, if you are unfamiliar with the Torche because, perhaps you've been time travelin' or sliding in and out of polar universes since the early 2000's, critics commonly refer to the aforementioned songwriting approach as doom and or sludge pop, but I/we generally choose to refrain from using such terminology when commenting on the group in question because if a sub-genre exists surrounding the sound that Torche has pioneered, I/we would prefer to give honest credit where it is due.. ya dig?

So, Torche and every bit of music they produce sounds like Torche, and the bands that have followed suit… well they also sound like Torche.. A bit bold and maybe a little arrogant for us to point out, but why beat around the bush… Semantics etcetera aside... You, just like me, have probably been waiting patiently for some new material since Meanderthal!… If so, I'm honored to be the one to publicly confirm that new material is on its way! If you are one of those in need of an education on the subject, Songs For Singles will still find a way into your day to day… reason being… everyone's summer need a jam (debate it) and S.F.S. will be hitting shelves just in the nick of time!

“Choice Press Quotes” for Torche”:

“likely to appeal to listeners into any stripe of heavy music from the past 20 years.”- Pitchfork “thrash out hefty hooks so flawless that Josh Homme just woke up in a cold sweat.”- Spin “With beautiful shoegaze vocals and expansive, fuzzy guitar riffs, these Miami hurricanes have twisted their stoner metal into something altogether unclassifiable” - Alternative Press “Album of the year.” - Decibel “Meanderthal, an album with a tongue-in-cheek name that lures listeners in, then whacks them over the head with chunky distortion and indie rock melodic sensibilities.” - CMJ “Torche has carved out a unigue niche among connoisseurs of heavy music.”- Chicago Tribune “Torche takes on metal with an unlikely arsenal of pop hooks.”- Baltimore City Paper “Pummeling, earth-shattering noise married to gorgeous melodies: It’s the golden egg so many underground acts have searched for, but only a handful have had the chops to pull off.” - Paste

At last a new Roots Manuva album is here! And with artwork from the legendary Tony McDermott (who was responsible for the illustrations on Greensleeves classics by the likes of Scientist, Mad Professor and the famous “Carnival of Reggae” 12” sleeve) it’s a thing of beauty. Okay, let’s clarify what we mean by ‘new’. What we have on offer is in fact largely a series of re-works by a talented producer who, goes by the moniker Wrongtom. Tom, with moral support from Mr Manuva, has turned in an album which covers all four of Roots Manuva’s main albums, plus tracks from “Dub Come Save Me” and “Alternately Deep” and a brand new collaboration with Mr Manuva and Ricky Ranking on lead single “Jah Warriors”. The project is approached with such conviction and skill that many of the tunes become hard to place in their original context, so it really does feel as if these funky, skanking, shuffling little numbers are in fact the ground zero of the Manuva experience.

Artist: The Hundred In The Hands Title: The Hundred In The Hands 09.21.10

Overview

WARPCD193/WARPLP193

“Move over Sleigh Bells: The Hundred in the Hands are the latest Brooklyn-based buzz band with a guy-girl lineup and tricked-out pop music at their core.” - AOL Spinner On the heels of their critically acclaimed EP, This Desert, Brooklyn’s The Hundred in the Hands will release their debut full-length September 21 on Warp Records. Time Out New York says “The Hundred in the Hands’ music springs from that sliver of the early ‘80s in which pop was personal, arty and potentially angry,” while Brooklyn Vegan calls their EP “a bit post-punky, a bit shoegaze-y but sounds like now. And you can dance to it.” The new recording follows the band’s first national tour and a wave of critical praise from the U.K. and Europe. The Hundred in the Hands LP is an album of deceptively complex pop songs which hark back to the dance music of NYC’s storied underground. Where their recent EP feels like a summertime pop dream, THITH’s forthcoming album conjures the spirit of downtown’s mutant disco scene as made legendary by clubs like the Paradise Garage. It’s a product of DIY home-recording plus a series of studio sessions in London and New York with contributions by producer friends including Jacques Renault, Richard X, Eric Broucek and Chris Zane. The Hundred in the Hands is Eleanore Everdell and Jason Friedman. The two live in Brooklyn and discovered their shared sensibility for early hip hop, French house and disco, ska and dub, post-punk, British invasion-mod and girl pop from the 60’s through the 80’s and decided to form a band. Their first song—the post-punk rave-up “Dressed in Dresden”—was written and recorded in a couple of days, released online, picked up and released as a 45 by a record shop in the U.K. where they were soon playing shows and coming to the attention of Warp Records. Meanwhile, the two retreated to the bunker to write and record. During that time, Friedman and Everdell focused on deciding exactly who they wanted to be. What they discovered and emerged with were 11 startling new tracks and a precise and deliberate sound.

DAVE ALVIN

AND THE GUILTY WOMEN RELEASE DATE: 09.21.2010

rammy-winner Dave Alvin has been roaming the highways of American music for over a quarter century. During those decades he’s busted speakers with roots rock kick-starters The Blasters as well as mined the depths of country, folk and blues with his solo projects. A mainstay during much of this journey has been Alvin’s electrifying band The Guilty Men. Following the recent death of Dave’s best friend and Guilty Men accordionist Chris Gaffney in early 2008, Alvin decided to move in an exciting new musical direction. In October 2008 he stepped onto the stage of the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival with an all star, all female group. Since dubbed The Guilty Women, the group consists of Americana scene vets Cindy Cashdollar, Nina Gerber, Laurie Lewis, Sarah Brown, Amy Farris, Christy McWilson and Lisa Pankrantz. Special guests include Marcia Ball and Susie Thompson. The self-titled debut from this uniquem assemblage of players led by Alvin is a spirited collection of thoughtful yet dynamic tunes, featuring worldclass musicianship worthy of his now-legendary pedigree. Watermelon Slim Live at Ground Zero Blues Club A terrific live DVD from a great live performer! Bill Homans, a.k.a. “Watermelon Slim” is one of the most intriguing bluesmen out there. Watermelon Slim first appeared on the music scene in the early 1970s as the only Vietnam veteran to record a full length LP during the war.

Past Reviews of Watermelon Slim: “Watermelon Slim incarnates the deepest and truest roots of American music. Combine Jimmie Rodgers, the Carter Family & Bob Wills with Blind Lemon, Sonny Boy Williamson and Wilson Pickett—and you have Slim—a one of a kind pickin’ & singin’ Okie dynamo.” Jerry Wexler, Legendary Producer

In subsequent years, Slim played with a variety of famous blues stars, but only recent has he become a fulltime bluesman.

“He’s got that cry in his voice that only the greatest singers in the genre have had before him.” AW, Paste Magazine

Less than six months after leaving his most latest truck driving job, hauling industrial waste, Slim is now making a living as a full-time touring bluesman. The decision was predominantly the result of a recent and nearly fatal heart attack, and the renewed perspective on mortality that followed. Logically, why drive industrial waste around Oklahoma to dispose when one can drive band mates around the US to play music and entertain?

“A blues hero goes country on a trucker's ode to the road. (This album) finds the singer and slide guitarist revisiting the country of the Seventies, before the homogenization of the Garth Ages. The sound owes as much to Lynyrd Skynyrd as to Merle, Hank and Waylon." Blues Revue

howlin’ the blues

"There is no doubt this is a country album, complete with fiddles and steel guitar...But it is also unmistakably a Watermelon Slim album with his intense, world weary voice that sounds like it has covered a lifetime of hard miles..." Blurt Magazine

Now that Slim has received a record sixteen blues music award nominations in the last 4 years, he is the new ‘King of the Blues’. Finally, a live DVD that captures the brilliance of Watermelon Slim.

CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX —I , Vigilante

FORMAT - CD /LP LABEL - INVADA UPC - CD 5024545600520 / LP 5024545600513 CATALOG # - INV095CD / INV095LP LIST PRICE - CD: $15.99 / LP:$26.99 "Lupus Pilum Mutat, Non Mentem" - The wolf may change its fur, but not its nature. This is the sen-timent that runs throughout the new six (6) track album "I, Vigilante". It encompasses words of warn-ing and tales of trouble from times past up to the present, songs of standing your ground and stories from our history, for it is only through history we truly exist. "I, Vigilante" is something of a catch-up point for CBP as even though the last mammoth albums were only released last year, the songs on "The Resurrectionists" and "Night Raider" are in fact older, dating back to 2007. So to save frustrations and to keep the gears oiled, CBP have recorded five (5) new songs to release this summer. This is not the usual type of album in CBPs world, it per-forms a slightly different agenda, shorter and tothe-point, although the running time is still around the 45 minute mark. It makes more of a statement of where the band is in the live arena, with a noticeably raw and less produced approach.

Following the ground-rupturing, genre-fusing success of their ballistic debut full-length, 2009’s Join The Q, The Qemists return with their brilliant second album, Spirit In The System, a bolder and more sophisticated beast betraying a confidence drawn from playing their wild noise to riotous audiences across the globe. While Spirit In The System delivers plenty of The Qemists trademark visceral energy – like ‘Your Revolution’, first single off the album, with its galloping Drum & Bass tempo changes and ribcagerattling sub-bass riffs and captivating vocals from Brighton-based Matt Rose – it’s a deeper experience than its predecessor, the group having gained the confidence to touch feelings as well as move bodies. With collaborations from the likes of Rob Hawkins (The Automatic), Grime MCs Maxta and MC ID, and Enter Shikari, to name but a few. The Qemists remain as brilliantly, defiantly indefinable as ever.

HANNI EL KHATIB Dead Wrong

I N N O VAT I V E L E I S U R E R E C O R D S Hanni El Khatib’s music is as diverse as his ethnicity. Equal parts Filipino & Palestenian, Hanni El Khatib hails from San Francisco, is creative director for skateboard powerhouse HUF & is heavily influenced by the 1950’s. The multi-instrumentalist serves as singer, songwriter & producer for his one-man band (live he is joined by a drummer). With his sinewy guitar and wry, whiskeyglazed voice, Hanni creates malt shop music for those who drink them spiked with bourbon. Hanni’s folky blues reflect his love of the soulful music of Sam Cooke, Johnny Cash & Robert Johnson, but lyrically it’s more like Charles Bukowski with a conscience. Hanni’s debut full-length will be released in early 2011 and sounds like a cross between The White Stripes, Black Keys, Johnny Cash & 1950’s Doo Wop. The first single from the record, “Dead Wrong” is a harrowing appeal to a scorned lover complete with the “La, La, La” vocals and rapid, single-note guitar lines that made 1950’s surf rock famous. The B-side is an old standard called “You Rascal You”, a song sung by many including Cab Calloway and Louis Armstrong. Hanni gives it a slight twist in his version adding blazing guitar riffs and a yelp as strong as any.

“The endorsement of Aesop Rock goes a long way but even if Hanni El Khatib didn’t arrive with impeccable credentials, I suspect that I’d have become an instant convert to his bloozy garage-rock soul, suggestive of Jack White if he was a spiritual disciple of Sam Cooke rather than Son House” - LA Times

GENRE : OLD-TIME FILE UNDER: “B” Black Twig Pickers, The Banjos and fiddles, boards and bones in hand, The Black Twig Pickers dove into a living tradition of old-time music that surrounds their homes in Southwest Virginia and never looked back. Both scholars of the regional sounds and advocates of an ecstatic and highly personal approach to the music, the Twigs hold down local dance and bar gigs, play all manner of celebrations and every so often, hit the road. Along the way, Isak Howell, Nathan Bowles and Mike Gangloff kept company with some of underground America’s heavyweights and haunted the doorsteps of Appalachian fiddle and banjo masters. They’ve played for the National Council for the Traditional Arts and for audiences overseas. And they’ve put out a string of acclaimed albums, including 2008’s Hobo Handshake and last year’s Jack Rose & the Black Twig Pickers. Ironto Special is an album of traditional Appalachian old-time tunes (and two originals) that they’ve learned through study of both local old-time musicians and oldtime records and field recordings. The instrumentation is all-acoustic and features some of the old-time usuals – fiddle, banjo, guitar – and some less-routinely-heardin-today’s-old-time-scene implements like washboard, bones, fiddlesticks, mouth harp and jaw harp. Plus (on one song) a one-of-a-kind baritone resonator 12-string guitar. Old-time music served, and continues to serve, a variety of functions in Appalachian life – from dance music to somber solo performance to raggier blues and everything in between. Ironto Special is an attempt to celebrate this variety in the old-time tradition through the band’s process of learning and growth as they explore the music’s many facets. As a result, the band is in a constant state of evolution as they gleefully tackle this music that fascinates and enraptures them. Mike Gangloff’s fiddle playing is driven by often-frenzied bow rhythms and a steadily improving technique, which combine with his near-religious fervor of gathering tune variations, giving him a large range of expression on the instrument. Isak Howell’s guitar is as chugging and powerful as ever, but this record is really his standout harmonica showcase. Perhaps the biggest change from Hobo Handshake to Ironto Special is Nathan Bowle’s move to the clawhammer banjo. The washboard attack of Hobo Handshake is still present on a few tracks (and bones and fiddlesticks make welcome appearances), but the majority of the cuts are a snapshot of Nathan’s growth on clawhammer banjo, further allowing Mike (previously the band’s primary banjoist) to soar above it all with his idiosyncratic fiddle style. Recorded throughout 2009 in the Shred Shed in Ironto, Virginia, Ironto Special is entirely recorded in single takes. There are no overdubs on the record in any form. Although Ironto Special is their Thrill Jockey debut, The Black Twig Pickers have recorded several releases for VHF, The Great Pop Supplement, and Klang. Mike continues to play in Pelt and the Spiral Joy Band with Nathan. Isak has also recorded and played with both bands. At some point, these three musicians realized that old-time music is a living, breathing art form, not just music that was recorded in the 1920s or 30s, and it managed to bring them all together. Old-time music is not something that needs to be re-enacted or revived – it’s doing just fine and all they did was step in and take part. They are not pretending to have grown up in the music or in the part of Virginia they now call home, but like the many who have come before them and passed on their knowledge, they consider themselves to be a part of the music as much as anyone else, and Ironto Special is their contribution to the continuously flowing tradition that will eventually be passed on to the next generation of players.

Clairaudience Fellowship Thrill - 255 Limited LP $15.99 BOX LOT LP 40 Vinyl is non-returnable

*90377-ACFFBe

GENRE : EXPERIMENTAL FILE UNDER: “H” Higgs, Harper “N” Nautical Almanac “L” Lungfish

Release Date: September 21, 2010 Clairaudience Fellowship is a new album from Twig Harper and Daniel Higgs, two legendary forces in the realms of experimental/noise/rock/out music. Twig Harper is a performer and electronic sound artist who began playing guerrilla-and punk-style shows with Scheme, Mini-Systems and Nautical Almanac in the milleu of Wolf Eyes, Andrew W.K. and others involved in the Bulb / Hanson 90’s noise/total music movement in Ann Arbor, MI. Moving first to Chicago and then to Baltimore, he has toured widely in the US (five multi-month tours) and Europe (twice) with Carly Ptak and others. With Ptak, he has released many recordings and co-founded the influential Tarantula Hill venue-compound. His music and performances have been characterized generally by an incredible sense of trickery and playfulness - even foolishness - but in earnest and with careful consideration. Daniel Higgs is a musician and artist from Baltimore, Maryland on whose behalf superlatives are destined to fail. It’s not that his artistic output – spanning three decades, numerous albums, books of poetry and collections of drawings – simply eludes classification, it defies it. Higgs is known for his work as the sole lyricist and frontman of the band Lungfish, a fourpiece enshrined as one of America’s last true folk bands, and Higgs anointed as a patron saint to artistic purity. That the band has undertaken this pursuit in the guise of a humble rock outfit, in the absence of any public relations fanfare, metanarrative, or manifesto has been enough to endear them to tens of thousands. In recent years, Higgs has released a number of solo outings that can only be described as the ultimate in isolation, worlds away from the hypnotic, communal rock of his band. His latest solo recording Say God was released earlier this year on Thrill Jockey. A Conversation With Twig Harper Regarding Clairaudience Fellowship: How do you describe the new record to someone who has not heard it and is not familiar with Nautical Almanac or Daniel Higgs’ work? This record is a setting of experience by creating a bridge inside the ear striving to see linguessence/utterance immediately prior to verbal distinction placed firmly inside a double helix weave ultra verbal mirror. How would you describe it to someone who is familiar with your other work? This is a really special record, something that’s been silently brewing in the backs of our minds for years, unknown and hidden even to us until we decided to let it breathe. Please elaborate on recording techniques, instruments, and other technical information that might provide the listener more insight. Daniel brought intonation of previous transcribed word forms a resonation of the immediate experience of the responsive reaction of the recording as it was unfolding and taking place. The sounds formed by non-linear processing techniques, so that we would be able to receive the channeled manifestation. Tape loops that moved according to what sounds and air pressure vibrating the room, smoke filled mixing boards set to multiple effect chained feedback circuits, open minds, synthesizers with independent sound wills interacting with ours, and hidden layers of multiple spoken tracks thrown in a syncronistic overlayment that was sculpted and raised to the heavens. How did this duet come about? This recording was a direct result of Baltimore Maryland, Daniel Higgs and Twig Harper, starting from less and less random meetings to a level of enjoyment of each other, of shared past occurrences and lead to a willing of a creative fellowship. All are welcome to join in the Clairaudience Fellowship. Origins of the band and name? Clairaudience: to hear beyond physical vibration. Fellowship: in a communal or collaborative way.

GENRE : POP FILE UNDER: “F” Future Islands

Release Date: September 21, 2010 This has been quite the year for Future Islands. In April the band released the 12” EP In The Fall, (their first release on Thrill Jockey). The 12” featured the summer hit “Tin Man” as well as a song with Katrina Ford of Celebration. Following right on the heels of the 12” was the band’s full length In Evening Air, an album that was critically acclaimed across the board : “One of my favorite records of the year, hands down.” - Morning Becomes Eclectic host Jason Bentley “Future Islands’ sound is as texturally interesting as it is rhythmically accessible - music designed for both heads and feet.” - NPR Song of the Day “Replacing the dance-pop movement with rich characterization and storytelling, they’ve found themselves at a pleasant distance from most formal genre comparisons. Their music is playful but steeped in subtle detail, with both emotional heft and a pungent sense of theatricality... Drawing from a few different traditions while making them their own, Future Islands prove here to be a well-versed group of wild, woolly storytellers.” - Pitchfork (7.6) “There is an uncommon thrill in hearing a band discover and deliver a fresh approach, and this is what Future Islands achieves on the nearly perfect In Evening Air.” - PopMatters (8/10) “The album is a bottom-of-the-heart outpouring of pop music. Harrowing and addictive in equal measure” - BBC Radio One The band hit the road and toured the US for over two months, bringing their high energy live show to clubs across the country. They did in-store performances at Amoeba in Hollywood, Reckless Records in Chicago and Criminal in Atlanta. They performed and were interviewed on the hugely influential KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic show, they stopped by for a performance at Seattle’s KEXP, and they were featured on Dirty Laundry TV. The band shows no signs of slowing down with a month long European tour on the horizon, and now, Undressed, a brand new limited 12” EP. The songs for Undressed were recorded quickly in Baltimore’s Mobtown Studios for broadcast on WYPR’s “The Signal” as the band was preparing for their first ever acoustic show at the Metro Gallery in Baltimore. The sessions at Mobtown served as much as a practice as it did a recording, as Future Islands brought in three additional musicians to fill out the unplugged ensemble: Denny Bowen (Double Dagger) on drums, Kate Barutha on cello and Devlin Rice on acoustic guitar. Those performances saw Future Islands strip down rich textures and lush melodies to their core. Samuel Herring’s always-affecting vocals are all the more haunting in this new setting. Based on the success of that first acoustic performance at Metro Gallery, Future Islands perfumed the acoustic set again at the opening of Baltimore’s Whartscape Festival. They would later close out the festival in their standard configuration with a set that Bmoremusic.net called, “nothing short of legendary.”

Ilyas Ahmed Between Two Skies / Towards The Night Pakistani-born musician Ilyas Ahmed traffics a sound that borders on the folk/drone/raga/rock axis, one that Scottish critic David Keenan has called “gone”. Currently residing in Portland, OR, Ahmed has released recordings on Time-Lag, Digitalis, and Root Strata. He is known to perform live with Honey Owens (Valet) and Jed Bindeman (Eternal Tapestry, Heavy Winged) and his recent recordings have featured Liz Harris (Grouper). He first appeared in the Fall of 2005 with Between Two Skies & Towards The Night two albums that were released on CDr in editions of 50 copies. Even in editions so small these records quickly made waves and impacted anyone who was lucky enough to hear them. In 2007, Between Two Skies & Towards The Night were given a proper CD release by Digitalis.

It’s primordial and yet forward-thinking, a music for all civilizations seen through one lost soul’s eyes. It’s timeless and hypnotic, challenging and emotionally pure. It’s essential, simple as.” - Julian Cope’s Head Heritage

Immune Recordings is now proud to present the ultimate edition of these two modern classics presented as a deluxe gatefold double LP. Featuring the original collage artwork printed in full color as well as brand new gatefold artwork created especially for this release by Ilyas Ahmed. The music was meticulously cut to vinyl by Roger Seibel at SAE Mastering in Phoenix, AZ and pressed on high quality virgin vinyl at RTI in Camarillo, CA. Some words on Ilyas Ahmed from author/critic David Keenan of Volcanic Tongue : In the fall of 2005 Ilyas Ahmed self-published two solo discs of guitar, vocal, piano, percussion and bells that felt so completely lonesome - so fully unplugged from anything approaching any extant tradition - they may well have been beamed from his own personal universe a couple of light years away from the nearest human being. They came with virtually no accompanying details, no hyperbolic press release or handy line of descent, except for the information that they were recorded in almost complete isolation on an old farm in Minnesota. Where he was calling from seemed to be the only fact that held any weight in regards to the measure of the music. This was extreme emotional topography, personal mappoints focused into an intense singularity. The discs were titled Between Two Skies and Towards The Night. They spoke of a saga as hermetic in its personal symbolism as that of Jandek, Mark Tucker or Joshua Burkett. The music itself seemed a little Anglocentric for an American resident, with guitar stylings that were closer to the whole Bert Jansch/John Renbourn type of spidery, eschatological folk modes than the more often referenced school of American Primitive birthed in the wake of the late John Fahey’s personal guitar cosmologies. Ahmed was born in Pakistan, raised in New Jersey, lived in Vermont and Maine, took off for Seattle, dropped out in Minnesota. He was on the lamb, and he was drawing on a musical vocabulary that was a classic traveller’s cache. In his unanchored modal work he touched on aspects of Davy Graham and Clive Palmer’s Far Eastern/North African folk synthesis. In the organic logic of his phrasing - the very length of his lines - he was truly projective, with movement in space governed by movement of breath. The evocative placement of piano, vocals, cymbal drones and thimbles of percussion also seemed to follow a similar construction, falling like delicate feathers into a deep, black void. And his vocals sounded like trains, like the whistle of the freighters on their way from Jackson, Mississippi to Houston, Texas on John Fahey’s 1967 concrete/guitar masterpiece “A Raga Called Pat”, while his guitar would occasionally lock in behind them in a laconic, traveling style that approximated the laying of tracks across huge phantom continents. There’s a purity to the playing across both these early sides that is becoming hard to find in the increasingly culturally-policed and globally plugged-in underground milieu that was the first to embrace them, highlighting both Ahmed’s lack of subcultural savvy and his deeper, more intuitive grasp of the precise vibrations of Ur-forms like folk and country blues, resulting in a music that has tangible roots in classic outlaw styles while remaining extremely personal and outside of any established school. Call it abandon, a facility for letting go, for moving on; either way Ahmed’s music is *gone*. And all we have are the recordings, scattered notes to prove that he once existed and felt it all as deeply and miraculously as any of us. And right now, from where I’m calling from, I wouldn’t ask for anything more. --David Keenan, Glasgow, May 2007.

NEW SINGLE: “Trace Decay” Serviced to Alt radio July 31

Wintersleep's fourth album, New Inheritors, follows the immense success of Welcome to the Night Sky, an album that garnered the band much critical acclaim and popular attention, securing them the 2008 Juno Award for New Group of the Year, as well as video awards for the single, "Weighty Ghost". The dreamy, tone-drenched pop architecture of the songs on New Inheritors was born on the road as the band spent the past 2+ years touring across Canada, the USA and Europe. Produced by Tony Doogan (whose credits include the last Wintersleep as well as Mogwai and Belle and Sebastian) the album has been hailed as “one of the most fearless rock albums of the year”.

Bio: On March 11th, 2010, Great Big Sea celebrated their 17th birthday as a band. Like almost all of their many anniversaries spent together, they celebrated by playing a concert, this one in Omaha, Nebraska. For the players it was an important landmark, but for the fans, some of whom had travelled hundreds of miles, it was a chance to spend a night with a band that has come to define the energetic spirit of Newfoundland. On July 13, 2010 they released their tenth full length album, Safe Upon The Shore which contains their signature blend of folk and pop. 5% discount on the entire catalogue: • • • • • • •

Record Store Spotlight

Music Millennium It was The Ides of March, March 15th of 1969, when Don MacLeod, his wife Loreen and brother in law Dan Lissy first opened an 800 square foot record store on the corner of 32nd & East Burnside. Specializing in mostly underground music not found in the department stores, drugstores or the couple of record stores which existed at the time, Music Millennium filled a niche for the Portland music community. Titles by Fairport Convention, Frank Zappa, John Fahey, The Fugs and Holy Modal Rounders were stocked in the small store along with the sounds heard on the then three month old FM station, KINK-The Underground Link. The store quickly grew in the first five years to its current size, including the addition of a classical store called The Musical Offering, now known as Classical Millennium. A second Music Millennium store was also added next to the now defunct Purple Earth Tavern at NW 21st & Irving, later located at 23rd & Johnson. It's over 30 years later and Music Millennium is the oldest record store in existence in the Pacific Northwest. Throughout their history, they've stocked the ever-evolving gamut of formats including LP's, 45's, reel-to-reel, 8-track, cassette, DAT, compact disc, mini-disc, DCC and CD-ROM. As people who know and love music, Music Millennium has hosted an array of in-store performances and autograph appearances over the years, including the likes of Richard Thompson, Luscious Jackson, Loreena McKennitt, Maureen McCormick (aka "Marcia Brady"), Blue Rodeo, Shonen Knife, Matthew Sweet, Soundgarden, Mike Watt, Don Walser, Sheryl Crow, Randy Newman, Everclear, Jewel, Little Feat, Susannah Hoffs and Cheap Trick to name a few. When did your store open its doors? 3PM on March 15th , 1969....the Ides of March What made you venture into music retail? My venture into music retail was an accident....a good accident. I knew nothing about recorded music. I played music and was going to to go to college on music scholarships. I started working in a record store in September of my senior year of high school...never went to college. How does your store stand out from the rest? We have a great selection and great staff. We pioneered live music in a record store in the 80's and do about 150 instore performances a year. What do you do differently than others to help publicize/promote/market a release? When we champion a release, we will do displays, blogs, instore play, e-mail blasts...anything we can to get the word out. What kind of selections do you tend to cater to? We are a full catalog store. Blues, Classical, jazz, Soul. Hip/Hop, folk,Electronica, Rock, World....they are all an important part of the store and we try to give the customers a great selection to pick from in all of them. Describe your average customer. 35 to 60...people who grew up as vinyl or CD buyers. What are your favorite Redeye releases? 1) Anything by Los Straitjackets 2) Dolorean 'Violence In The Snowy Field" 3) Sloan "Never hear The End of it" 4) Dave Alvin "Ashgrove" 5) Sharon Jones "100 Days, 100 Nights" Any tidbits, stories or funny notes? I visited Redeye headquarters when they were in a house in the middle of Nowhere, North Carolina. CDs and vinyl in every room of the house except the bathroom. Kitchen was full of product. It felt like home.
