INDIE EXCLUSIVE ORANGE
Commontime is built around the brothers playing, writing and singing together again after four years of solo works, collaborations and soundtracks. "As much fun as we might have had on our own or collaborating, we missed just spending time in the studio, the two of us, trying things out together." explains David. Standout tracks include The Noisy Days Are Over, a wry farewell to some bad old boozy days, heels dragging while everyone else is growing up and getting on and Disappointed a love story lost in a fog of mismatched expectations. Field Music have always been a unique proposition; a bandwho plough a furrow that, since their 2005 debut has been theirs and theirs alone. Now more than ever, with conversations and choruses, family and friendship at the heart of Commontime, Field Music are something to be truly treasured.

DRESSY BESSY KINGSIZED
WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE (CD/LP): 2.5.16 “We never broke up,” Dressy Bessy singer/guitarist Tammy Ealom says on the occasion of the release of KINGSIZED, her band’s first new album in seven years. “It was never our intention to drop out, it just sort of happened. We were dealing with life, but we never stopped making music.” “We didn’t quit,” agrees guitarist John Hill, Ealom’s bandmate of nearly two decades. “But we did go through a period of reexamining what we were doing, and we came out of it a better and stronger band.” Indeed, the 13-song KINGSIZED makes it clear that, nearly 20 years into their career, Dressy Bessy are making some of their most compelling and accomplished music. Such melodically infectious, lyrically barbed new tunes as “Lady Liberty,” “Make Mine Violet” and the anthemic title track are potent examples of the band’s uncanny ability to wrap Ealom’s personally-charged, pointedly subversive lyrics in sparkling, irresistibly catchy songcraft. In addition to showcasing the band’s musical chemistry, KINGSIZED also draws upon the talents of a wide assortment of friends, admirers, and contemporaries. R.E.M.’s Peter Buck adds distinctive 12-string guitar on “Lady Liberty” and “Cup ’O Bang Bang,” while legendary Pylon frontwoman Vanessa BriscoeHay adds her voice to “Get Along (Diamond Ring).” Minus 5/Young Fresh Fellows mastermind Scott McCaughey plays keyboards on “Make Mine Violet” and “57 Disco.” KINGSIZED also features an assortment of notable guest bassists as well, including Eric Allen of The Apples In Stereo, Jason Garner of the Polyphonic Spree and The Deathray Davies, Mike Giblin of Split Squad and fabled punk progenitor Andy Shernoff of The Dictators. “We’ve always been a really self-contained band, and not the kind of band to have a million guest stars,” Ealom notes. “But losing a member freed us up to try different things and bring in different people, who came up with things that were different from what we’d come up with on our own. I went ahead and recorded some scratch bass lines for the songs on the album, and then we asked various people to play, and it worked out perfectly.” Now that they’re back in action with some of their strongest music to date, Dressy Bessy is happy to be back at work. “I feel like we’re just starting to get good at what we do,” Ealom states. “We’ve had a lot of time to hone in our sound, knowing what we want to sound like and figuring out what we need to do to get that. I’m really excited about the future.” “We actually kind of know what we’re doing now,” adds Hill with a chuckle. “We used to always be flying by the seat of our pants, but we’re better players, Tammy is a better singer, and we’re a better band. I think we’ve recorded the best album that we ever have, so our plan now is to just get out there and rock, then keep on rocking. We need our fans and we feel like they need us too.”

COUNT OSSIE AND THE MYSTIC REVELATION OF RASTAFARI TALES OF MOZAMBIQUE
Street Date: 5th February 2016
No shipments outside of North America
Soul Jazz Records are releasing Count Ossie and The Mystic Revelation’s seminal 1975 album Tales of Mozambique in an expanded double album/single CD/digital format, fully remastered and with the inclusion of two bonus rare single-‐only tracks, full sleevenotes, exclusive photographs and interview.
Tracklist
Count Ossie is the central character in the development of Rastafarian roots music, nowadays an almost mythical and iconic figure. His importance in bringing Rastafarian music to a populist audience is matched only by Bob Marley’s promotion of the faith internationally in the 1970s. Count Ossie’s drummers performed on the first commercially released single to integrate Rastafarian traditional music with popular music: the vocal group The Folkes Brothers’ groundbreaking song ‘Oh Carolina’, recorded for producer Prince Buster in 1959. In 1966 his drummers greeted the momentous arrival of Haile Selassie at Kingston airport. His legendary jam sessions in his Rastafarian compound up in the hills of Wareika, Kingston, are famous for the many Jamaican musicians who attended including The Skatalites players – Roland Alphonso, Don Drummond, Johnny Moore, Lloyd Knibbs – and many others. The Mystic Revelation of Rastafari formed in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1970, a union of Count Ossie’s Rastafarian drummers – variously known as his African Drums, Wareikas or his Afro-‐ Combo – and the saxophonist Cedric Im Brooks’ horns group, The Mystics.

The Mystic Revelation of Rastafari are the defining group in bringing authentic Rastafarian rhythms into the collective consciousness of popular music, their unique music is at once rooted in the deep traditions and rituals of traditional drumming alongside a forward-‐ thinking, even avant-‐garde, artistry influenced by the likes of John Coltrane, Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders and other pioneering African-‐American jazz artists radicalised and charged by the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

Artist: Lafawndah Title: Tan EP 02.05.2016
Overview
WAP388
Lafawndah exists at a unique crossroads between vocalist and producer, conceptualist and performer - a disciple of hyperlinked global sonics and steadfastly urban attitude. Like her acclaimed 2014 debut EP, the recording of Tan began on an island with the same minimal studio set-up. This time, with collaborators Nick Weiss and Tamer Fahri, it was Fire Island off the South Shore of New York rather than the Caribbean island of Guadalupe. Soon enough proceedings hopped to the totemic island of Manhattan, where she embodied the role of executive producer by folding the like-minded ADR and L-Vis 1990 into her process to help realize a warped vision of esoteric industrial rhythms fused to an aggressive palate of nomadic atmospherics that brings to mind Muslimgauze and the twisted pop orchestrations of Leila without sounding remotely like either. Friends first and collaborators second, the unique group operated more as an orchestrated band – not ‘producing’, but working cohesively to accelerate Lafawndah’s momentum.
Format: Vinyl Boxlot: 25 Price: $10.99 Packaging: 12” jack with 3mm spine
The songs on Tan are married to the sound and vice-versa, they are confrontationally playful, determined compositions and each track exists as a kind of suite with such a degree of narrative and musical morphing that Lafawndah seems to channel fragments of Grace Jones, Lady Saw, Psychic TV, Kate Bush and Missy Elliot into a theatrical soundclash that arrives at something entirely her own. In the now, everything exists as a fusion. It is the meaningfulness
within these myriad connections that proves so difficult to find. Lafawndah presents an alternative, a metallic idea of sensuality and defiance that is fluid, unsentimental and assertive. Just in time.

SO U L S O K S É GA Following successful excursions into rare tropical and island sounds with the ‘Sofrito’ series, ‘Haiti Direct’ and ‘Calypsoul 70’ albums, Strut Records turns its focus to the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius for a new compilation, ‘Soul Sok Séga’. Séga first developed as an insular music and dance form after slaves arrived on Mauritius (then île de France) from East Africa and Madagascar during the 17th to 19th centuries, using Créole language and rhythms played on the large ravanne circular drum, the triangle and the maravanne, a box filled with dried seeds. Séga was essentially frowned upon and marginalised by the Mauritian bourgeois until the 1950s when singer Ti Frère began to play a more Westernised fusion of séga. Through Ti Frère and his contemporaries like Serge Lebrasse, the music began to be popularised during the ‘60s and became fully accepted after the ‘Night Of The Morne’ event in 1964 as the Créole community asserted ist cultural identity. ‘Soul Sok Séga’ documents the heyday of séga in Mauritius during the 1970s as a new generation of contemporary artists broke through. Jazz, soul, funk and rock elements all began to be effortlessly infused into traditional séga folk roots to create some inspired fusions. A talented new wave of artists including Jean- Claude, Claudio, Marie Josée and Roger Clency became domestic stars and began to take the music to international stages for the first time. Meanwhile, cult artists like the James Brown-influenced Ti L’Afrique, Coulouce and Christophe all enjoyed a more brief but important moment in the spotlight. Since this era, séga has now been adopted as the national music of Mauritius and the original ‘70s music is a revelation for any fans of tropical music and world sounds. Strut’s album features extensive sleeve notes from long time Mauritian cultural champion, Percy Yip Tong, including new artist interviews, photos and original vinyl artwork. The compilation is by DJ duo La Basse Tropicale (Natty Hô and Konsöle), based in the neighbouring island of La Reunion. All formats (1CD / 2LP / digital) are unmixed, with all tracks never reissued internationally since they were originally available. An accompanying European tour featuring Ti L’Afrique, Jean Claude and Claudio with an all-star band of original musicians is planned for Summer 2016.
KEY POINTS - first official international compilation documenting séga music from Mauritius - key artists involved in album and promotion including Ti L’Afrique, Jean Claude and Claudio - features exclusive artwork by Lewis Heriz and sleeve notes by respected Mauritian cultural journalist and promoter, Percy Yip Tong - strong addition to Strut’s tropical reissue range following the Sofrito series, Haiti Direct and Calypsoul 70 - supported by DJ dates by album compilers La Basse Tropicale with plans for séga legends live tour during 2017

20 YEARS OF HENRY STREET MUSIC THE DEFINITIVE 7“ COLLECTION – PART 1 About HENRY STREET MUSIC TWENTY YEARS OF FIERCE HOUSE MUSIC Incredible as it seems, this year marks twenty years since the launch of Johnny D’Mairo’s Henry Street Music label. To celebrate, BBE is marking the occasion with a very special 5 x 7 inch vinyl box set. Many of the movers and shakers of the day had their best moments on Henry Street, and some of the best of them are represented here: Johnick, Armand Van Helden, Kenny Dope, Ralphi Rosario, Mike Delgado, DJ Sneak, Robbie Tronco, 95 North and Scotti Deep – a veritable roll-call of the premiereleague of dance at the time, an era when dance music still seemed incredibly fertile and the link with its own past is still vital. Henry Street (named after Brooklyn homeboy Johnny’s neighbourhood) always had a ‘New York’ vibe, and even when drawing its producers from further afield, the label encapsulated the city’s melting-pot of talent and raw, bristling energy... energy captured here, and exploding off these remastered tracks like it’s 1999 all over again! So... dust off those dancing shoes, and get ready to feel the heat, it’s one more time for the Henry Street Hustle!

shirlette ammons Language Barrier Veteran Durham, NC-based record label Churchkey Records has partnered with newly-launched SugarQube Records to release shirlette ammons’ sophomore album, Language Barrier. The first single, “Earth Intro”, features a guest appearance by Grammy Award-winning duo The Indigo Girls. Other guests on the album include Meshell Ndegeocello, Amelia Meath (Sylvan Esso), Hiss Golden Messenger, German rapper sookee, Heather McEntire (Mount Moriah), Median (Foreign Exchange Music Group), Joceyln Ellis, and Phil Cook (Megafaun). All of the music was composed by Daniel Hart whose credits include St. Vincent and Broken Social Scene among others. shirlette worked with a broad and talented roster of award-winning guests to create a record that blends and bends genres. “As a part of the whole Language Barrier concept, I wanted to write an album that explores the ways we love across imposed and implied barriers. In this sense, Language Barrier is an album about love as an act of resistance. I also wanted to approach genre as a ‘barrier’ then break it down.” The album seamlessly moves between indie and classic rock, hip hop and ambient soul. “To have an opportunity to work with Meshell, The Indigo Girls, Amelia, Hiss Golden Messenger—and all on one record—is a dream come true,” shirlette says. SugarQube Records is the brainchild of identical twins shirlette and Shorlette Ammons, and Language Barrier is their debut release. Asked about working with SugarQube to release Language Barrier, Churchkey’s Kyle Miller and Steve Jones said “shirlette is such a fantastic artist, and we’ve wanted to work on a record with her for years—we’re thrilled and attered to be working together with the Ammons twins as they launch SugarQube Records.”

Wanda Group valiantly returns for their third release on NNA Tapes. Since the project’s debut “Bass Urine” in 2011, Louis Johnstone seems to have worked diligently to eradicate all traces of traditional “music” from his work, leaving behind only the acousmatic sounds of life itself, deepening the journey down the rabbit hole of musique concrete. Although “Ornate Circular” seems to be constructed from various tape and field recordings, electronic signal processing, radio interference and digital effects, Wanda Group refuses to make these elements the emphasis of the work or give any clues as to their origin. What Johnstone presents us with instead is purely the creative manipulation of the sounds of earthly existence, void of context or traditional musical structure. As humans, it is our nature to want to assign a reality-based narrative to sounds we cannot see the source of, but Wanda Group denies us this through the complete deconstruction and rearrangement of everyday sounds, creating a totality of abstraction which nullifies context altogether. “Wanda's music may not make for an altogether comforting listen, but sometimes faintly obscure questions are preferable to over-familiar answers.” “One of the most intriguing voices in contemporary electronic music.” –Angus Finlayson, Resident Advisor “It’s confusing, chilling and deeply enthralling stuff” –FACT Magazine

NNA Tapes is proud to present Secret Meeting, the collaboration of Travis Laplante (tenor saxophone) and Peter Evans (trumpet). Laplante and Evans are each devoted to creating multidimensional improvisational spaces, pushing their instruments to the edge in the service of a musical experience that travels beyond the realm of the mind. The deeply mysterious, epic improvisations on Secret Meeting points toward a seemingly ancient relationship between these two boundary-breaking improvisers. Encompassing a vast array of sounds and an umbilical cord-like connection, Secret Meeting embodies profound exhaustion in one moment, as though the players' collective weariness might altogether slump them over, and manages unparalleled vitality and vigor in the next. Through all of these sonic undulations, Evans and Laplante place the listener within a visceral, symbiotic torrent of beauty. “[Peter Evans produces] a torrent of breathtaking, athletic and often disconcerting virtuosity” –Corinna da Foncesca-Wollheim, New York Times “Laplante brings pinpoint precision to ferocious extended techniquecircular breathing, fiery overblowing, and starburst harmonics... from brutal catharsis to piercing austerity.” –Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader

Looking inward for inspiration, these talented musicians present a powerfully unique record: riff-heavy and devastating, restless and condensed, melodic and atmospheric, imbued with unrelenting forward motion.

Old Sunlight is an exciting, fascinating and relentless piece of semi- instrumental Cinematic Metal in its more noble expression, cleverly technical and complex without being over-worked - a captivating structure of monstrously heavy riffs and haunting mellifluous vocals surrounded by an impressive maze of curving and twisting melodies.

Debut LP from Santa Ana, CA based Media Jeweler. "$99 R/T Hawaii” aims to capture the relentless restlessness of being alive on this increasingly weird and overstimulating planet. It was recorded and mixed in a casual and really quite nice three-day session during the dawn of spring at Machines with Magnets by Seth Manchester and Keith Souza (Battles, Lightning Bolt, etc.). It was mastered a week later by XOQ (Liars, Factory Floor, Martin Gore, etc.). “ A true fiesta for the ears” - Pitchfork “Itʼs immensely pleasing” – Stereogum “Media Jeweler's music—the back and forth, up and down, the aversion to settling in one rhythm or soundscape—feels particularly resonant in these last few days of summer when the lingering heat begins to make us stir crazy.” – Noisey “$99 R/T Hawaii hides plenty of little flares of genius worthy of multiple listens.” – Consequence Of Sound

Swim 10” VWM50 5024545736267 $13.99 ALWAYS THE SEA SHAPESHIFTERS ORGANIC CITIES MECHANICAL CREATURES SLOW LIGHT
Minimal Compact’s Malka Spigel and Wire’s Colin Newman’s minimal-technoinspired Immersion, release their first new material under the Immersion name since the 90s. This new five-track 10” is on their own Swim label . The project between the two has been inactive since the release of 1999’s Low Impact, with the new decade seeing Newman & Spigel refocus their attention to the song based structures of Newman’s Wire, Spigel’s solo works and their collaborative work as Githead alongside Robin Rimaud/Scanner . The duo decided to revive Immersion after a synth-based shopping trip in New York at the end of Wire’s US tour earlier this year, eventually giving way to this new release from the pairing. “It’s all about analogue synthesisers and layering,” says Newman of the new release as well as Immersion’s general focus. “You begin with on part and then play on top of it, pass after pass, building up a track with loops of synthesiser and making an arrangement out of it. It’s very organic: there’s not a real sense of direction, it’s just the shape it comes out. There was no guitar ever on early Immersion — it was all synth. That was how we started, but I had a strong feeling this time that we couldn’t just repeat the same Immersion that we did a long time ago. I felt it should make a step forward and do something it hadn’t done before, which is what it did with the guitars.” The 5 new tracks of epic, ambient dronescapes capture the essence of Immersion
