DAVE HOLLAND | CHRIS POTTER LIONEL LOUEKE | ERIC HARLAND Sure, you could call it a supergroup, but AZIZA is much more than that. The quartet brings together four of the most insightful and influential voices in modern jazz to form a true band, one with a wholly distinct and intriguing sound of its own. Bassist DAVE HOLLAND, saxophonist CHRIS POTTER, guitarist LIONEL LOUEKE, and drummer ERIC HARLAND are all renowned bandleaders in their own right, and together offer a staggering breadth of experience and depth of inspiration. For the jazz aficionado, those four names alone will suffice to compel a listen to the band’s self-titled debut, due out October 14, 2016, on Holland’s Dare2 Records imprint, while the spectrum of emotion and diversity of approach in the music will spur obsessive repeats. Holland is a universally respected, Grammy-winning 2017 NEA Jazz Master inductee whose storied career includes work with Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Gary Burton and John McLaughlin, as well as his own groups from CIRCLE to PRISM. Chris Potter’s ceaseless originality has established him as one of the leading saxophonists of the last couple of decades, whether leading his electric group Underground or playing with artists like Pat Metheny, Dave Douglas or Paul Motian. Lionel Loueke has forged a unique bridge between the musical tradition of his native Benin and a highly individual take on contemporary jazz guitar, creating an utterly alluring and exceptional blend that has attracted admirers from Terence Blanchard to Joe Lovano to Herbie Hancock.

Eric Harland’s deeply felt and dynamically sophisticated approach to the kit has made him one of the most in-demand drummers of his generation, leading to fruitful partnerships with Charles Lloyd and Kurt Rosenwinkel as well as his own group VOYAGER and the collective quartet James Farm with Joshua Redman, Aaron Parks and Matt Penman.

BY ANY BEATS NECESSARY Wax Tailor aims to make you travel with his fifth studio album By Any Beats Necessary. “The album’s title reflects my determination to use all kinds of sounds and textures to get to something musical,” says JC Le Saout. “The word ‘Beat’ also draws a line towards the Beat Generation, Kerouac’s famous novel On The Road, and the quest for an better place. And so, in this time when each of us needs a little escape, I conceptualized this album as the soundtrack to a better elsewhere”. This new take on the western frontier leads us on a fabled road where blues, psychedelic rock, soul, funk and hip-hop collide. Joining him on this ride are guests such as Ghostface Killah from the Wu Tang Clan, R.A. The Rugged Man, who crosses mics with up and comers A-F-R-O & Token, in a showdown for the ages. The album also features Tricky in a very personal duet with Charlotte Savary, Lee Fields, the godfather of the retro soul scene, Sara Genn, Mattic and Raashan Ahmad and newcomer Idil.

Taking one more lap after the finish line, Junior Boys are releasing the Kiss Me All Night EP to cap off their busiest year ever. In addition to releasing the critically acclaimed album Big Black Coat (City Slang Records) Junior Boys' Jeremy Greenspan also released the album Oh No with his collaborator Jessy Lanza (Hyperdub Records) and the But Wait There's More EP with Borys (Jiaolong Records). Now, just in time for an extended US tour in September and October as well as additional European dates, Junior Boys return with brand new material. The ep starts with two extraordinary retro-futuristic club bangers, "Yes“ and "Babyfat.“ It also includes a staple of their live set, the John Martyn cover "Some People Are Crazy,“ and is rounded off by the Paisley Park infused title track "Kiss Me All Night.” Like the end of a long race, it’s hard to come to complete stop. After all of these projects were finished and realized, the compulsion to keep working and working remained. Kiss Me All Night is a kind of amalgam of all of the different projects. It combines the techno production technique of the Jiaolong work, the experimental pop of Jessy Lanza and the subtle fragility of Junior Boys' oldest material. Kiss Me All Night is a final kiss to the year that was. INFORMATION:

Kuedo returns to Planet Mu with his long awaited second album ’Slow Knife’. It’s been five years since his acclaimed debut ‘Severant’ and time has proved it prescient; its futuristic trap influence is now ubiquitous. ‘Slow Knife‘ seems to return to where ‘Severant’ left off, but with the intricate sound design of last year’s haunting EP ‘Assertion Of A Surrounding Presence’ subsumed into the compositions, making them more exacting and beautifully crafted. Between albums Kuedo has been working as a sound designer and composer for hire and the application of intent and widescreen rigour that commercial work requires has definitely found its way into the new album. ‘Slow Knife’ has the subtlety, ambition and pacing of a brilliant soundtrack - a sense of an album of scenes, that easily lends itself to an impressionistic narrative. But, as with ‘Severant’, the title suggests relationship unease, with the slow knife being a metaphor for the building resentment in any close relationship. TRACKLIST:

A: Hourglass Under The Surface In Your Sleep B: Bending Moon Slow Knife Floating Forest Love Theme C: Approaching Broken Fox - Black Hole Breaking The Surface D: In Your Skin Warmer Light Halogen Light Lathe

‘Slow Knife’ is almost two albums; the first half, according to Kuedo, invokes the seduction of the city, taking the music of Michael Mann’s ‘Manhunter’ as a cue, with the latter half being inspired by the bloody starscapes and voodoo wilderness of films such as ‘Angel Heart’, ‘Night Of The Hunter’ and more recently the ‘True Detective’ series. Both halves of the album are also in thrall to ‘Ghost In The Shell’ and Mica Levi’s inspiring ‘Under The Skin’ soundtrack, especially in the turbulence of the mid-section. The songs of the albums first half are synthetic and seductive, a gelatinous veil with shades of the pseudo-sophisticated trance of Enigma, of all things, underpinned with dusky unsettling shadows and atmosphere. ‘In Your Sleep’, perhaps surprisingly, features the vocals of Hayden Thorpe from Wild Beasts, who settles his dark, whispered vocals into the moonlit shadowy atmosphere. ‘Floating Forest’ is the first track to allow back some of Kuedo’s experimentation with the Southern rap template, which he explored before it became commonplace, with echoed drum splashes and a sinister repetitive motif, ending with a haunting growl. The second half of the album enters wilderness territory with ‘Approaching’s slow descending notes, before ‘Broken Fox - Black Hole’ throws the record into the cathartic darkness, as undulating chords play hide and seek with riotous reeds and scratchy strings grown from challenging collaborations with cello player Koenraad Ecker (of Lumisokea). ‘Breaking The Surface’ shivers and coils, before metal and strings dominate while ‘In Your Skin’ feels like being lost in a vast hinterland before ‘Warmer Light’ introduces some memories of sunshine, with its plucked bassline and spiralling dub. ‘Halogen Light’ opens with the sound of crickets and a clear piano, cleansing the soul before ‘Lathe’ brings things down to earth with a short, yet powerful coda.

FEAT. MC DJ WINSTON “THE WHIP” WILLIAMS

Studio One Radio Show RELEASE DATE: OCTOBER 14TH, 2016

Studio One Radio Show presents two rare performances recorded for Studio One by the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation Up until the 1970’s there were heated discussions about the amount of U.S. soul hits being played on the radio. It was in this climate that Studio One’s Clement Dodd as well as Duke Reid and Lee Perry, started purchasing time from the radio stations to play their material uninterrupted. The favored radio jock for Studio One was Winston Williams nicknamed “The Whip With The Solid Kick”. Winston “The Whip” Williams first entered radio in the 1970’s at the now defunct Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation as a newscaster and disc jockey for the afternoon show ‘Whip with the Solid Kick’. He also helmed the Studio One radio show that was broadcast on JBC on Saturday Mornings. Williams specialty was his rapid-fire jive rhyming delivery alongside his alter-ego Marcus who “ate chicken on Sundays”. To date his career in radio spans four decades as newscaster and radio personality, ‘Winston in Kingston’ continues to excite listeners as the ‘radio rhyme king’ on Power 106FM. Broadcasted on Saturday these shows were intended to showcase recent releases and to advertise the various Studio One locations and their products. The first of the two Studio One Radio Shows was known as the “Sound Of Young Jamaica” and featured Winston Francis, The Boss, Jerry Jones, The Heptones, Ernest Ranglin, Horace Andy and Burning Spear. The second show, known as Soul Power and Sound, features Sugar Minott, Ken Boothe, Alton Ellis, The Heptones and Carlton & The Shoes.

Following his acclaimed debut Whelm, London-based singersongwriter and pianist Douglas Dare returns with his sophomore album Aforger on October 14th. In a digital age where memories are mimicked by pixels and identity is as malleable as static, Douglas Dare’s new album Aforger questions the boundaries between reality and fiction. Inspired by recent events and revelations encountered in his life these songs depict Dare at his most vulnerable, whilst simultaneously reflecting our own obsession with reality and technology back at us. Aforger was produced by long-time collaborator Fabian Prynn, mixed by Paul Gregory of Lanterns On The Lake and mastered at the iconic Abbey Road Studios. In the following conversation Douglas strips back the personal journeys and realisations which preceded its recording. Having first toured the world to support of the likes of Ólafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm and Fink, followed by European headline tours in 2014 and 2015, this autumn will see Douglas return to the live circuit for a series of select shows in London and beyond.

In a conversation with Douglas Dare on July 11th 2016: The album title plays with the idea of a forger – someone creating imitations or copies, and reimagines them as the creator of something that’s no longer real. Prior to writing the record, I came out to my father and came out of a long relationship, both were hugely challenging for me and questioned my idea of identity and reality. These thoughts leaked out into the record and formed the core of Aforger. I was determined not to write a break-up album or repeat what I’d done before.. I grew up on quite an isolated farm in Dorset, surrounded by fields and not much besides. My mother taught piano from home and we didn’t have a computer, or the internet or mobile phones. In fact, my family still chooses not to use these things. It’s worlds apart from my life now in London where technology seems to dominate everything I do. After finding out my boyfriend had been leading this double-life, I became obsessed with the question of what is real and George Orwell’s 1984 felt appropriate for me to re-read. Orwell explains this idea of reality control and Doublethink, and it struck a chord with me. The idea that truth can be steered or changed, and we might be able to believe two contradictory things at once. In my case, ignorance was my protection from the truth and ignorance really is bliss, until you’re no longer ignorant. Binary talks about the idea that technology is allowing us to live on after we’re gone. A relative of mine whose parent passed away kept a picture of them on their phone as a background image. A friend saw this and asked ‘how can you have that there to constantly remind you of your loss?’ They replied, ‘no I have to, it shows me that they’re still here’. This resonated with me and I thought ‘okay, this is just an image to me but to them it’s more than a reminder or a reassurance, it’s a reality’. At the same time, I was finding myself haunted by the digital reminder of my ex-partner and wishing they would disappear. I had to realise that it’s all just pixels on a screen. I think New York can be thought of as this fabricated, magical place. I was there with my boyfriend after touring the U.S., but when I came back to London I discovered all these lies and began questioning everything. I even questioned whether New York actually happened or not. New York is a song that’s literally describing that very real feeling of not knowing who or what to believe any more – scary and magical at the same time. Lyrically I wanted to be as honest as possible. The album deals with so much dishonesty, so I felt the lyrics had to be the counterbalance. I was inspired by Björk’s album Vulnicura and how everything is almost awkward in its honesty. Like my first album, Aforger started as poetry, but I consciously tried to be less poetic. For instance, Oh Father is an example of complete unambiguity. It’s certainly the most personal song I’ve put out there, and the realisation that people may hear it makes me feel very vulnerable. That’s the most real feeling of all for me right now.

It’s dark outside our window, with thunder echoing over the horizon — a familiar rumble, but we can’t tell where it’s headed. Does this mean Purling Hiss are coming back our way? Among other things, YES. High Bias is in the air. There’s no place like America today —  but that’s been true of our lunatic colony for a long time. Purling Hiss have floated through the sewer of US culture their whole lives. Growing up in a time like the 80s made a professional dreamer out of Mike Polizze, fueling a desire to escape to the perfect world where music amplifies the pain or just plain DROWNS IT OUT. Since 2009, the fuzzing rock power of Purling Hiss has taken many different forms, all emanating from of Polizze’s instinctive approach to playing guitar, writing songs and hooking a feeling from disparate memories, sensations and desired effects. At times carefree and apparently footloose in the world, other

times intensely focused and wrathful, Purling Hiss are the orphaned kids of last century’s rock and roll generations, lost in a society that has forgotten its way but determined to find their feet again. High Bias moves with rageful, dazed humor and soulfulness against the darkening times in which we find ourselves. With no way out, Purling Hiss hit today’s bullshit head-on, employing pounding psych-rock and punk effects, slipping signature Hissian backup “oooo-ooh”s and Polizze’s blistering guitar pile-ups in a full-bodied, head-ripping brew. Mike puts together a Purling Hiss album as a whole thing, with songs striking defiant and wistful tones in turn, mixing in odes to impermanence, spitefilled rebellion and bemused recollections along the way. High Bias kicks off at 11, blowing with first take energy into a mood of ominous portent. Right away, the power of the band all together is sick — the

guys that came on for Weirdon have grown into a full-fledged Purling Hiss, with Ben and Dan feeding off each other, providing fresh rhythm ground for the songs to romp over. This creates seamless motion between disparate styles, from streamlined futurist radiowave to blatzing punk, sweet indie-pop song craft and barely-contained group riffage. Side one closes with “Teddy’s Servo Motors,” a Milk-Carton Kids/Teddy Ruxpin-haunted fever dream. This was the volcanic headwater of High Bias, a post-tour jam after the end of the Weirdon cycle that pointed the way to a new combination of pop and trash fully loaded with favorite reference points and forgotten ephemera from former eras. Throughout the album, Purling Hiss modulate styles and inspirations, drawing influence from different eras of rock, treasuring bubblegummy moments (like the incredibly sweet “Follow You Around” and the cheeky “Get Your Way”), and

mix-and-matching nostalgia for punk, dance-pop, no-wave and krautrock, all of it melted down into a pleasingly primitive jet of tunage to spray into today. Album closer “Everybody in the USA” brings Purling Hiss full-circle to the repetitive stomp and antisocial fear and loathing found in early recordings, while recalling a misread 80s protest number whose anthemic chorus was used for propaganda despite everything said in the verses. This is the scourge of our American life — the manipulation and the misuse of the desires of people living their everyday lives — but Purling Hiss don’t shy away from being misheard, that’s a part of the confusion we’re all a part of. High Bias is a brave and bold blast of popular music that lays it on the line to keep the rebellion alive in the streets of our mind. This is rock we will need in our ears as we venture into the darkness, and the next unexplored stretch of the wasteland....

When two best friends start a band, songs get filled with inside jokes. In My Head takes the listener on a journey of Andreya Casablanca and Laura Lee's friendship, their life, and a step further into the world of GURR. Having met in an American Studies class in Berlin, and after spending time in the US together, the US West coast sound was an obvious influence on their music, but Andreya and Laura draw from a wide set of pop culture references and personal experiences for their debut album. How to deal with one's own ignorance (first single release Moby Dick), let yourself go and have nights that turn into mornings (Breathless), or deal with the loss of love through someone else's perspective (Yosemite). Instead of telling stories of how it was, the two friends want to create a world of characters, stories and feelings everyone can relate to − and everyone can tell in their head for themselves. First Wave Gurrlcore they call their own genre, always with a slight and acknowledging nod to riot girl culture and yet stressing that they want to invent their own style − they pair straight−forward garage rock tunes with more psychedelic and wave elements on their debut album. "We didn't start making music because of Kathleen Hanna," explains singer Andreya Casablanca. "Musically we were more influenced by bands like Gun Club, Echo & the Bunnymen, the B52s or classics like the Ramones and Beatles."

DVA’s new album ‘NOTU_URONLINEU’ marks a strong and brave turning point for his music. Made with the [Hi:Emotions] moniker that DVA has used for a number of remixes in the past, ‘NOTU_URONLINEU’ is very different from what you might know him for, both in its darkness and its abstract ambitions, but the detail and quality of the music is primed to win over new fans. The rhythmic brilliance and use of space that have given his dance floor recordings their distinct character have mutated and undergone re-assembly into deeper and darker shades. A more pronounced ‘off grid’, improvised character has seeped in, lending the record a looser feel to previous work, as if intuition guides it rather than club practicalities. The album was made under some new self-imposed conditions; of the recording process, DVA says ‘I realised before making this album I was most happy when listening to music in the dark like I did when I was at school. So I decided to record the whole album in the dark too’. Along with this, the album hints at themes of online alienation, confusion, control and domination, and is peppered with hints of fauxtherapeutic advertising and psychotic jingles - a reflection of the stress of online life. Of the themes, DVA says ‘The album project comes from a short visual story set in a time where a mega corporation named H:E / Hi:Emotions is slowly taking control of everything, and planning to eventually make all people live life under one brand in virtual reality. ‘NOTU_URONLINEU’ puts you at the start of that journey.

Laura Veirs Carbon Glacier [LP Reissue] ALBUM DESCRIPTION

Carbon Glacier was originally released on CD in 2004, later released on vinyl in 2007. It has been out of print since 2010. It is widely seen as a groundbreaking album in the Laura Veirs canon. “With her landmark fourth album, Veirs evoked the Pacific Northwest in climactic imagery” - Uncut "Carbon Glacier is a cold, beautiful and engaging record that translates the bleak, isolated vastness of nature into the bleak, isolated vastness of the modern city-sprawl, leaving one voice to sing in solitude.” - Pitchfork "This is an oddly beautiful album - far more engaging than you'd expect of one written in a grey Seattle winter, pondering mortality, Moby Dick and the great sheet of blackened ice after which it's named.” - The Guardian Producer/drummer Tucker Martine (Modest Mouse). Martine allows the experimentation to bloom in all the right places, resulting in a record that never overworks itself, despite being packed to the gills with ghostly glockenspiels, organs, random percussion, and trombone. Veirs' hypnotic voice cuts through it all with deadpan sincerity -- she's equally capable of pitchperfect beauty ("Lonely Angel Dust") or tightrope uneasiness ("Icebound Stream") -- that comes off somewhere between Nina Nastasia and Jolie Holland.” - All Music Guide HIGHLIGHTS

Personal Space Ecstatic Burbs TE156 12” LP on Orange Vinyl w/ insert, DL Code. Includes Marketing Sticker

RELEASE DATE :

10/14

ersonal Space released its debut EP, The Early Universe Was Entirely Opaque, in the Spring of 2014. It was a promising glimpse into a band ripe with talent and intriguing ideas. Still, the Brooklyn, NY outfit would stay relatively quiet in the months to follow as the lineup shifted and a more focused version of Personal Space began to take shape. Fast forward to early 2016 as the band emerged from the studio with Ecstatic Burbs, an amazingly accomplished and fully realized debut album.

TRACK LISTING

roudly embracing a unique mixture of styles and influences, Ecstatic Burbs is polished, progressive pop for the indie rock crowd rarely seen since the likes of the The Dismemberment Plan. Much like the trailblazing DC quartet, Personal Space delves into heavy topics with charmingly reckless abandon. The eight magnetizing tracks survey the saccharine, surreal landscape of early-aughts suburban coming-of-age and all the weird contradictions thereof: the impossibility of violence in a world saturated by it; maladaptive responses to burgeoning male identity and sexuality forged via the internet; over-determined life choices influenced by baseless desires. Yet, Personal Space infuses this challenging material with remarkable depth and humor. From the innocence of childhood to the confusion of adolescence and into the chaos of adulthood, the band hopes to find some sanity beyond it all. Ecstatic Burbs is quite simply, a rousing introduction to the masses for Personal Space.

“Waiting around on another person to change into someone that they’re not is a process predicated on false promises and false hopes. Personal Space’s new single ‘Offering’ takes place in that waiting period, the emotional push-and-pull of observing how a friend has transformed into something you can hardly recognizing but holding out hope for a realignment anyway.” — STEREOGUM EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE

Nathan Brannon is a comedian who tells stories about his life, and his new album “Because” - his first for Kill Rock Stars — is full of them. These stories, while delivered with all the comfort of a cup of hot cocoa, are anything but comfortable. Having lost his own father and become a father in the same year, Nathan's observations are more meaningful, personal, and meatier than in his earlier days. The ease of delivery is the same, the punchlines are all there, but the shit got real. Nathan is also a black man in a white city, half of an interracial couple, and the father of a mixed-race child. When asked who the audience was for this album, Nathan said, "The first half is for white America and the second half is for people of color." The mark of a great comic is delivering your experience in a way that people who are nothing like you can digest. And not just digest, but take home and keep close, in that place inside of us we all visit when we need compassion and community. Listen to both halves, and then listen again. You probably missed something important the first time while you were busy laughing. Nathan's wish for this album is that his son, now just a year old, will listen to it in twenty years and feel proud. We’re sure he will, because we certainly do.

They are dreamy, they are spooky, and they write real fucking songs. While one may detect the influence of the nocturnal jungles of Os Mutantes or the lapeled, knee-socked smarts of Belle and Sebastian, they have cobbled together a special kind of mineral all their own worth making room on the Table of Elements for. Earnest, yet sinister; Vampy, but sentimental. The precise recipe that goes into this concoction cannot be revealed, but it is a delightful snow globe of warm, colorful darkness. In 2014, they won a contest for free recording time at Dub Narcotic Studios in Olympia, WA. This resulted in their first single, 'Trouble in Paradise,' that was later featured in the ABC television series 'Pretty Little Liars.' Not long after that in 2015, their EP 'Cosmic Dial Tone' was released on Los Angeles label Lolipop Records on the heels of a Wes Anderson tribute compilation (American Laundromat Records), to which they contributed a contagiously glad version of 'Stephanie Says' by The Velvet Underground. After a year of writing and recording, they will now finally unveil their muchanticipated debut LP 'House of Souls' to be released Fall of 2016 on Yellow Year Records, and it will be glorious!

SOUL CLAP The spirit of the album was born during their first trip to Tallahassee, Florida to meet George Clinton, which resulted in a collaborative 2015 EP that also featured Sly Stone, as well as production on Funkadelic’s 2015 critically acclaimed album. For their own album Soul Clap returned to Tallahassee to record at Clinton’s What? Studios, collaborating with fresh local talent, working day and night in P-Funk's creative space. Between there, Miami, Red Bull Studios Manhattan, Midnight Magic’s studio in Greenpoint and Charlie Levine’s Rad Pad in Williamsburg, this body of music took shape. In ‘Soul Clap’ we can hear four years of maturing technique since their first album, carefully crafted and supported by a whole community of musical talent. In the words of Charles Levine, one half of the duo, “it digs deep into our funky souls and turns our wildest dreams into sound. If ‘EFUNK’ [their first album] was an attempt to create a blueprint using our past inspirations, then “Soul Clap” is the beautiful skyscraper, standing tall as it looks to the future.” This is music from an eclectic universe, where creativity and mystery are the guides. Lead single ‘Shine’ is an anthemic wonder featuring the legendary Nona Hendryx, founding member of the group Labelle, and collaborator with George Clinton & P-Funk, Talking Heads and Peter Gabriel to name a few. ‘Elevation’ and ‘Numb’ feature Tallahassee locals Ebony Houston, Ricky Tan, Dayonne Rollins and Freeky Neek, while original member of Funkadelic, Billy “Bass” Nelson brings his low-slung flavor to ‘Funk Bomb’ and ‘Future4Love’. Members of Soul Clap’s core Crew Love family, Wolf + Lamb, Nick Monaco and Greg Paulus of No Regular Play also play integral roles on this eleven track album, a truly collaborative endeavor that echoes its message through the soul. Eli Goldstein and Charles Levine have a rare and insightful take on electronic music that breaks through the limitations that often cages others and as DJs they have held residencies everywhere from Circo Loco at DC10 Ibiza, to Output in New York. “Long ago our mentor Caril Mitro from Vinyl Connection [a record store in their hometown of Boston] taught us that “House wears many hats”. That means that the music that we love so much comes in many shapes and sizes,’ explains Goldstein. ‘We are children of the 80’s and 90’s so funk and hip hop were our early influences, but discovering the rave and being led into house and disco, these genres feel very organic and homegrown to us. We carry these influences in our attitudes and beings. Music has the incredible power to shape a personality and it has molded us into the artists we have become.” Starting out cutting their teeth in the 90’s Boston rave scene, they soon found fame through a series of house edits and became household names through notable releases, including a DJ Kicks alongside close allies Wolf + Lamb and their electric first album called EFUNK. The title, which stands for Everybody’s Freaky Under Nature’s Kingdom, and sounds like modern electronic funk, became their calling card, and led to their collaboration with George Clinton and honorary entry into the P-Funk family. EFUNK is a bridge between the discerning futurism of underground dance and the charisma and boldness of funk and pop culture. For Charlie funk is his foundation, for Eli it’s jazz, and as their infamous Yoyoyo 90’s Jam parties testified (playing only classics from the era), they have the ability to transform and lead in more than one movement. “Back in the day at the Warehouse in Chicago with Frankie Knuckles or The Paradise Garage with Larry Levan there was no one sound that dominated musically. It was all about diversity and eclecticism. This was the ethos then and it is a very large philosophy behind us individually and as Soul Clap. In fact it is diversity in sound that initially brought us together back in the 90's and it is the yin-yang nature of us today that pushes us forward into the FUTURE!”

Youandewan There Is No Right Time AUSLP008 / AUSCD008 14.10.2016 Completing a fantastic triptych of LPs for 2016, Will Saul’s Aus Music is delighted to announce a debut full length from Youandewan. The Berlin based Brit’s ten track 'There Is No Right Time' lands in October 2016 and shows a very real development of his deep house style. Youandewan is Ewan Smith, a DJ and producer who has quietly but consistently gone about fomenting his own tender brand of deep house. He has been doing so since 2009 and most recently settled on this label with tracks that are shy but seductive, and full of both motive and emotive forces. This album stays true to that narrative, but really sees the producer finding his feet with his most accomplished and elegant work to date. Much of the music was sketched out

during a wintery Berlin three years ago. Having left London, hungover from a breakup, Smith found himself broke and secluded in an apartment for four months. All this lent the music he wrote a melancholic vibe; one that nods to the lonely nature of the job and to the darker side of constant partying and all that comes with it. A swelling, expansive piece of melodic atmospherics starts things off, then the soft hues of some analog chords bring a neon glow to the weightless whirl of 'Be Good To Me, Poly'. Soaring synths marry with a raw drum and bass combo on 'Waiting for L', then 'Time To Leave (Can’t Mix)' resets to a piano laced beatdown vibe that is willfully wallowing. '10405 (Alice)' is a shimmering, crescendoing piece, and

from there the second half of the album begins to take an upward and optimistic swing through the floating, graceful harmonies of 'Our Odyssey'. 'Something Keeps Me Real Quiet' is a concession to the floor with its rusted electro slither, 'Left On Lucy' calls upon friend Huerta for a flailing bit of hi-tek soulful house Derrick May would be proud of, and 'Earnest Kelly' nods to the '80s with its stomping retrosynthesis. Finally, '4D Anxiety' allows all pent up emotion and energy to dissipate via a playful hip-hop jam effortlessly tapped out on an MPC. Essentially, this is a listening album that proves deep house done well needn’t be reserved for the club. It is vulnerable and musical, and stays with you long after it finishes playing.

Marcel Dettmann DJ-KICKS Marcel Dettmann has mixed the latest edition of the highly respected DJ-Kicks compilation series. Whilst Dettmann is well-known for his incendiary sets at his residency at Berghain, his DJ-Kicks mix is crafted for listening, and displays a more reflective side of the DJ and producer. The mix explores a wide array of selections from various subgenres; ranging from the a new vocal-led Strictly Rhythm release, to rapping on Clarence G’s 1991 release ‘Cause I Said It Right’, recently reissued by Clone Records. Over the course of its 1hr 14 duration, Dettmann reveals multiple new original productions; most notably a collaboration with Levon Vincent, ‘Can You See It’. The pair have collaborated once in the past, releasing ‘Vengeance’ on Levon’s own Novel Sound label towards the end of 2015

to critical acclaim. ‘Can You See It’ sees the duo venture into darker territory; a stripped back, sub-bass laden affair, the quality of this production immediately stands out in the early stages of the mix. Dettmann also collaborates with MDR affiliate Wincent Kunth on ’Possible Step’. In addition to five brand new original Dettmann remixes and edits, there’s an unreleased remix of Marcel’s ‘Let’s Do It’ from Ostgut Ton labelmate Rolando. Designed to be enjoyed by both the critics and more casual listeners, this mix is the latest in a long series of lifetime achievements over the course of Dettmann’s career - and with so many new unreleased original Marcel Dettmann productions included, this is a landmark release for the producer.

Uffe – No! 2xLP + 7 inch– TARTALB006 – October 2016 Danish producer Uffe Christensen returns to Tartelet Records with his second LP 'No', a deeply personal LP to follow 2015's debut 'Radio Days'. Every bit as abundant as his first, it's a record that scales polyrhythmic percussion, improvised jazz, & billowing ballads. This, that and so much more, it's a triumph of one man's instinctive ear - and should be consumed in one sitting. A year after his dynamic debut 'Radio Days', Uffe resurfaces on Tartelet with a record cut in the same spirit as the last: a borderless approach to music-making with organic instrumentation at its heart. Genres collide peaceably - off-beat soul with jazz, hip-hop with the heft of house - and are melded smooth with an earthy warmth. Like nearly all at camp Tartelet, he's a producer who is more interested in cutting loose than playing to the tune of dominant modes in dance music. Uffe has all of the intuition of the self-taught instrumentalist, following his ear into unexpected TRACKLIST

rhythmic and tonal combinations. It's what gives the album its urgent appeal: the sound of tentative experiments being made live; of sequences improvised amongst friends. Far from a churn of simple floor fodder, the album is a journey through a consummate narrative. Shy guitar interlude 'Fridge Magnet Radio Theme' feels its way out of the warbling in jazz breakdown in 'LesserKnown Values'. 'The Fact', an unexpected vocal ballad, follows the broken beat of 'Solo, So Loud'. With the record's pleading closer 'From Me', it's a story with a start, middle, and end. A long player as long players should be. As Tartelet continue their run of consistently solid EPs & 12"s, it's still these album moments that remain the best gateways into the label's distinctive sound. Alongside Max Graef's debut 'Rivers of the Red Planet' and Glenn Astro's 'Throwback', Uffe's 'No!' is a mirror to the Tartelet spirit and sits amongst the imprint's best. For lovers of the true album - the full-length proper; the one-take listen – this one’s for you!

A TRIBE HAVEa yellow Ibeneath moon Release date: 10/14/2016

"Dubliner Patrick O’Laoghaire has bided his time with two EPs (2014’s Yellow Raincoats and last year’s No Countries), but his debut album overshadows these by virtue of its occasional imperfect folk/pop richness. The songs, too, are better – tracks such as La Niege, Cold Fact, Battle Hardened Pacifist (a particularly brilliant tune), Casablanca, and Cuckoo mix shrewd humour with a melancholic undertow. The result is intimate, friendly. After several listens, you’ll have a tribe, too." [The Irish Times]

"Beneath A Yellow Moon is written so elegantly, it reminds me of a classic black and white Hollywood movie. In its starring role is songwriter Patrick O’Laoghaire, an artist whose way with words and commanding vocal has all the qualities of a golden age leading-man... I Have A Tribe’s way of saying everything concisely is a wonder all of its own. And one the songwriter knows when and how to use. “Take the right to be human” is one such phrase. Coming at the end of the frantically building ‘La Neige’, O’Laoghaire drops the line like a dead weight is powerful. Every word of Beneath A Yellow Moon is pointed, and delivered to perfection... Rating: 10/10" [The Last Mixtape]

Description: From its surreal title and occult cover art to its grand buffet of vintage sounds and period production moves, Sam Kogon’s Psychic Tears is a lavish, painstakingly detailed work of modern-retro guitar pop. But what distinguishes the Brooklyn artist from the psychedelic pop herd is not his access to Mellotrons, Vox Continentals, and Russian fuzz boxes. It is Kogon’s vast and fluid command of chamber pop harmony and arrangement. It’s his long-arc melodic genius and his sweet, understated crooning—the real reasons why we revere Sir Paul, Brian Wilson, The Shins, or New York’s own baroque pop institution, The Left Banke, for whom Kogon served as lead singer during a short-lived reunion in 2015. Psychic Tears sounds robustly old school without much at all in the way of explicit references (though the chugging boogie of the delightful Marc Bolan homage “I’m Letting Go” makes a brief exception). Kogon’s retro is seldom studied or doctrinal; this is just the way he hears it, his natural voice as a composer/arranger. Many standout tracks depart from the period vibe entirely, notably “I Was Always Talking,” a timeless pop duet with Frankie Cosmos; and the nervy new wave rocker “I Could Kick Myself,” which channels the barely controlled downhill energy of Elvis Costello and the Attractions circa This Year’s Model.

Sam Kogon Psychic Tears Label: Beyond Beyond is Beyond Catalog Number: BBIBR031 LP / $18.99 / 857387005261

A native of New York’s mid-Hudson valley (site of the currently hopping Kingston and Hudson scenes), Kogon’s family has owned a pawn shop for over 100 years, perhaps accounting for the unstable and fritzed out guitar tones in evidence all over Psychic Tears. The record balances its embarrassment of exquisite melodies with a nasty punk urgency and lots of sonic horseplay, speaking to the rich contradictions in Kogon’s heritage: His grandfather Lonnie played Drums in the 1950's rock and roll group The Thunderbirds. On his mother’s side, he is related to Arthur Fiedler, the legendary conductor of the Boston Pops. Released not long after his skills were authenticated by several collaborations with The Beach Boys’ Al Jardine, Kogon’s pop-wunderkind 2015 debut Before You Knew Me attracted the attention of the Beyond Beyond Is Beyond label, leading to this short-order follow up and a big step up in production values. Recorded at the Figure 8 studio of NYC-scene stalwart Shazad Ismaily (Lou Reed, Tom Waits), Psychic Tears was produced by Celestial Shore’s Sam Owens and mixed by Gabe Wax (Speedy Ortiz, Here We Go Magic, Beirut, The War On Drugs, Cas McCombs). Kogon wisely kept his core ensemble together for this effort, leveraging their roadtested chemistry and the inspired fancy-bits string parts provided by longtime collaborator Finnegan Shanahan.

TOPIC RECORDS

‘Finale’ was recorded live during the innovative folk band’s 2008 tour – their first in 35 years - and sees the original line-up (Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Jacqui McShee, Danny Thompson and Terry Cox) revisiting classic repertoire. In February 2007 the original members of Pentangle – Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Jacqui McShee, Danny Thompson and Terry Cox - received a BBC Radio 2 Lifetime Achievement th Award from Sir David Attenborough. On 29th June 2008, marking the 40 anniversary of the recording their monumental live album ‘Sweet Child’ at the Royal Festival Hall, they returned to the very same venue to begin their first British tour since 1973. As Robin Denslow wrote in his review of the show for the Guardian, it was “an emotional, at times nervous, evening that was far more than an exercise in nostalgia, both because they are now even finer musicians than before, and because their sophisticated, quirky fusions sound as in tune with the current acoustic scene as with the more chaotic hippy era”. Formed in swinging ‘60s London, Pentangle were one of the most exciting and innovative groups in the world, genuinely pushing boundaries and exploring new musical avenues. Simultaneously stars of the underground and darlings of the mainstream, they enjoyed an unprecedented degree of worldwide success for an acoustic band and their influence and musical impact is still revered and relevant today. The beautifully recorded and packaged 2CD set captures the band in a series of scintillating performances. Bert Jansch supervised the mixing and sequencing and John Renbourn prepared the album masters before their untimely deaths in 2011 and 2015 respectively.

GENRE : METAL / THRASH FILE UNDER: “O” Oozing Wound RELEASE DATE : October 14, 2016 NO EXPORT (JAPAN, S. AMERICA EXPORT OK) TRACK LISTING: “So refreshingly anti-bullshit are Oozing Wound that they could conceivably turn out to be the Nirvana of thrash.” - Noisey The Nirvana of thrash, you say? Well, that is exciting! It can only mean one thing — Oozing Wound will make us a lot of money and die and then make us even more! So excited were we by this possibility, that we sat down and recorded an interview with our own band. Two birds, you know — we could write the bio and get bonus material for the posthumous box set all at once! The details: Oozing Wound spent four days getting a studio tan at Minbal Studios in Chicago to record the new album Whatever Forever with recording engineer Matt Russell, which is four times as long as it took the band to record its 2013 debut Retrash. Russell mixed the album and it was mastered by Heba Kadry at Timeless Mastering. Song-by-song breakdown: Rambo 5 (Pre-Emptive Strike): Another love letter to the greatest movies and our hope that a fifth installment is coming. We gave it a title, Stallone. WE WANT THIS SO BAD PLEASE LET US WRITE THE THEME SONG.

SALES POINTS Whatever Forever is the third album from Chicago thrash trio Oozing Wound Whatever Forever is Tipper Gore’s worst fears incarnate. A horrifying concoction of apathy and malaise wrapped in a delectable sheet of hatred, drowned in a bath of contempt represented here by club sauce. Great for parties, ask your caterer for details

Deep Space: Deep Space Nine episode 619 “In The Pale Moonlight” One of the greatest, if not the greatest, episode from the best Star Trek series (shut up, yes it is).

Deluxe 2xLP version is pressed on virgin vinyl with an etching on Side 4, packaged in a gatefold jacket with high gloss varnish, artworked insert, and download card. A limited quantity is pressed on opaque yellow vinyl and include a comic from artist Sam Nigrosh (who did the album artwork)

Mercury in Retrograde Virus: Ever notice everyone who complains that planets are out of alignment and it’s fucking up their life just seems to have a fucked up life period?

CD version in 4 panel mini-LP style gatefold package with high gloss varnish and 4 page booklet

Weather Tamer: Senator Jim Inhofe of pretend grown-ups state Oklahoma. The man famous for bringing a snowball onto the senate floor in a confused attempt at explaining the “big lie” of climate change. When we don’t have fresh water anymore and all the coastal cities become water parks, you can thank this shit stain of a human.

The band will be touring throughout the year

Diver: Look, I’m not trying to be a downer, but when people you love die it can be, uh, painful?

Everything Sucks, And My Life Is A Lie: When you write something catchy, best to wrap it in a shroud of sarcasm. Eruptor:Not quite a song and not quite a word. Let’s play connect the songs! Tachycardia: Ever feel like you want to die only to realize you really just want everyone else to? You Owe Me, Iommi: Better mock your heroes too. Sky Creep: Vladimir Komarov, the first man to die from a space mission, but not actually in space. Really fucked up story. He amended his will before the flight for an open casket funeral so the generals would have to see what they did to him. Google image search to see why!

GENRE : ALTERNATIVE / FOLK / POP FILE UNDER: “R” Roberts, Luke RELEASE DATE : October 14, 2016 NO EXPORT (JAPAN, S. AMERICA EXPORT OK) TRACK LISTING:

“Roberts’ vocals (which contain all the cackle of J Mascis and all the plaintiveness of Townes Van Zandt) are tender and bruised, and…can be legitimately heartbreaking.” - Pitchfork The music made by Luke Roberts is wide in scope and spare in structure. It is as universal as it is personal – if you have to label it, the right stamp to put on it might be “redemptive blues”. The songs themselves are not looking for or extolling redemption, but the search for liberty that underlies them and the sense of freedom they express (often between the lines) leave the listener with a sense of optimism that can only be called redemptive. Roberts’ songs, while deeply personal in origin, touch on universal life experiences and emotions. Both the music and the musician celebrate the quest for liberty: What is it? Can it be imbibed? Embodied? Sunlit Cross is unwaveringly honest and raw, as Roberts gets closer than ever to his true self: a person who looks past the dark truths to see a real light. Roberts has long searched for freedom — even as a kid growing up in East Nashville, he began train-hopping, exploring who he was and where he should be in the world. Four years after the release of his second album The Iron Gates at Throop and Newport, Roberts has gone from living in a trailer in Montana to living on acreage in Tennessee, where he is learning how to farm. In the passing years, Roberts dealt with heartbreak and wanderlust, driving between New York and Nashville, living out of his car for weeks, traveling to Cambodia and Thailand and finally to Kenya, where he stayed with a family whose day-to-day challenges and simple needs impressed him. It was in Kenya where the songs on Sunlit Cross originated. The record is a lullaby, Roberts says, one that pits darkness and disenchantment and the ugly side of life against levity, love, and childhood. The songs on Sunlit Cross are a conversation, one that takes place between Roberts himself, the listener, “God, everything, everyone.” “I spend a lot of time counterbalancing things,” Roberts says. “If I want to say ‘yes,’ I’ll pronounce it ‘no,’ and then ask myself why and I end up saying ‘Jesus.’” Sunlit Cross was recorded at Ronniejone$ound with Kyle Spence (who, in addition to recording tracks for Kurt Vile’s B’lieve I’m Goin Down, also drums with Vile and Harvey Milk). Spence worked closely with Roberts to make the record sonically richer than ever before. The Sunlit Cross crew (including Stephen Tanner of Harvey Milk and Music Blues) would sit on the deck and eat White Castle burgers and drink beers and look out on the Georgia pines with birds and crickets echoing all around. “It feels like you’re in a billionaire’s office in a treehouse,” Roberts says, “making music with some real pros.” Vile, who became enamored with Roberts’ music invited Roberts to tour with him, sings backing vocals and plays banjo on “Silver Chain”. John Neff (Drive-By Truckers) plays pedal steel, and Creston Spiers (Harvey Milk) contributes viola, guitar, and piano. Roberts and his Athens, GA-based band will be touring in late 2016 and into 2017.

GENRE : ROCK/EXPERIMENTAL FILE UNDER: “P” People of the North “O” Oneida RELEASE DATE : October 14, 2016

NO EXPORT (JAPAN, S. AMERICA EXPORT OK) TRACK LISTING: People of the North is Kid Millions and Bobby Matador. The duo has a long history for creating explorative music and of pushing the limits in performance (Kid Millions as Man Forever and behind the kit in Oneida, Bobby Matador on guitar, vocals and organ in Oneida). As the duo People of the North, they have released a series of limited Long Player-only meditations on a particular musical concept. The parameters they set for themselves and the challenges they embody are often immense. The duo’s core raison d’etre is to create relentlessly abstract music. It should be no surprise that their albums are quickly snapped up by New Music devotees. People of the North’s The Caul is a musical attempt to grapple with the forces of one’s personal desires and own inherent limitations in perceiving and understanding reality. Cauls are the membranes that cover the heads and faces of some babies when they are born, and in some folklore, caul-bearers are able to shift between logical and liminal states. “There are historical associations with cauls around precognition, superstition, and protection,” Bobby explains. “The process of creating this music was intended to replicate experiences that are difficult to express or navigate through rational process.” Improvisation and experimentation are musical languages, and the best speakers are active practitioners. People of the North has been playing together and speaking these languages together for over 25 years. This album is a rare performance where one can hear this conversation without other voices. The album title track is one of the only true duo tracks in People of the North’s history — Kid and Bobby have previously recruited others including Barry London and Shahin Motia of Oneida and Richard Hoffman (Sightings) to play with them in the past — and the pair’s fluency with experimentation is evident throughout The Caul. And, as if to defy your expectations, the duo presents “A Real Thing You Can Know,” the band’s most linear, explicitly emotional track recorded to date. The Caul was recorded over the course of two days at Potterville International Sound in upstate New York with multi-instrumentalist Jamie Saft (a renowned keyboardist and composer who scored the Oscar-nominated documentary Murderball), who plays on the album’s second track “Surfacing” and “A Real Thing You Can Know”. People of the North will be playing select performances through the remainder of 2016 and into 2017. While commercial factors often determine what is written into musical history, one should not forget that innovators, like People of the North, shape music.

MIZMOR - YODH 2LP BLURB INFO Here we have the final announcement for our batch of summer albums, and one that I am quite pleased to be a part of, the release of the second full-length album from Portland, OR based one-man blackened-doom band, Mizmor. Although there have been a number of EPs and split releases over the last four years, Mizmor has not released a full-length record since its self-titled first album in 2012. A.L.N. (the sole member of Mizmor) and Gilead Media are excited to announce this new installment entitled Yodh.

ARTIST: TITLE:

An epic conceptual exploration, Yodh finds the project at its most focused state. Over the course of the 60+ minute, five-track album Mizmor takes the listener to a place entirely new for the band. The album is an impassioned struggle with the nature of survival - why humankind continually chooses life each day in the face of adversity, pain, depression, and suffering.

Yodh is also elevated in its display of Mizmor’s most fully realized sonic experience. The album was recorded by A.L.N. himself, meticulously mixed by Sonny DiPerri, and mastered by Adam Gonsalves. This creative team pushes the sonic limits further than any previous Mizmor material in order to present a finished audio product suitable for such demanding themes. The result is simply brutal, harrowing and overwhelming blackened doom that surges with pure energy. This album will be presented as a gatefold 2LP by Gilead Media, and as a self-released cassette edition. Both formats will feature packaging graced with four incredible works by painter Zdzisław Beksiński, licensed and scanned directly from the paintings themselves in Poland. $9 File Under: Post Black Metal No Export Restrictions Barcode: None Overview On this double CD we revisit ”On The Subject Of Mortality” and ”Social Disservices”. Both carefully reworked. With a new mix by Spenser Morris and a re-master by Colin Marston we’re getting the possibility to experience these two albums in a totally new and fresh way. “REVISIONS OF THE PAST comes in a massive 8 panel digipack, containing the reworked albums ”On The Subject Of Mortality” and ”Social Disservices”, fantastic cover artwork by Nate Burns, a 16 page booklet including original text explanations, current liner notes and other important reflections of these two albums. A few words from Austin of Panopticon about these re-issues: The album ” On the subject of mortality” has been painstakingly completely reworked , re-amped, cleaned up and remixed by Spenser Morris as well as re mastered by Colin Marston to sound the way the album was originally intended. For many who have heard this album before, it will be like hearing the album the for the first time. The album suffered from terrible production due to the head space I was in when I recorded it, the equipment ( or lack of ) and COMPLETE lack of recording knowledge I had during its recording. To me, this is the album as intended and the definitive version of the record. “Social Disservices” has also been completely reworked by Spenser Morris, painstakingly sample replacing the drums ( using samples from my drum kit), hit for hit and blending them with the original lo-fi drum tracks, so you can finally hear the parts played as they sounded live. When this album was tracked, I still had very little equipment or knowledge of how to convey the music as it sounded in my head…thanks to Spencer’s hard work I can finally hear the album the way it was meant to sound..brutal, suffocating and furious. I am so thankful for the work he put into this. The album was reworked, re-amped and remixed over a period of six months, then remastered by Colin Marston who was also involved in the creative process of the record. I am forever grateful to both of these men for the work they put into this. The original versions of the album will always exist, and they stand as a reminder to me of a time and place in my growth with this project: raw, honest, stumbling through change and growth. I look back on both of those album folly for what they were at the time, but honestly I am relieved to have these ( in my opinion) improved versions of the albums done and I am forever grateful to Spenser, Colin and Nate for the work they put into this. Thank you my friends!”

Track Listing: On The Subject Of Mortality 1. Living In The Valley Of The Shadow Of Death 2. Living Eulogy 3. To Make An Idol 4. A Message To The Missionary 5. ...Seeing... 6. Watching You Social Disservices 1. Resident 2. Client 3. Subject 4. Patient What the critics are saying: “Lunn considers these to be the definitive versions of Mortality and Disservices, and there’s no reason to doubt him, as both are faithful to the originals and heightens their respective strong points. It’s not best taken at once, as both of the records are vastly different. Panopticon diehards would get something out of the new Mortality; Disservices is a much more broadly appealing record, one that shows that black metal can be used to teach compassion.” -Pitchfork

Stilla returns with yet another monumental recording that reeks of aggressive, beautiful and melancholic metal. After two years of silence Stilla now slightly moves out from the shadows and once again we get the opportunity to experience the very typical rugged Stilla sound we first heard on their 2013 album Till stilla falla. Here blended with inspiration and emotions not far away from what the prog-rockers Goblin achieved with D. Argento in the 70's.Stilla has always created their own unique style of Scandinavian Black Metal where the sound more then seldom travels into the nostalgic 90's mid era. And Skuggflock is definitely not an exception…

Track Listing: 1. Irrfärd 2. Vårens sista önskan 3. Skuggflock 4. Till den som skall komma 5. I tystnad vilar själen 6. Av maran riden 7. Ett inre helvete - ett yttre helvete What the critics are saying: “The band returns with another monumental recording, Skuggflock (Shadowpack), that fuses aggressive, beautiful and melancholic metal together in an immersive and potent style. After two years of silence, Stilla re-emerge from the shadows building on the rugged sound we first experienced on their 2013 album Till Stilla Falla. Skuggflock sees the band blend their own unique style of Scandinavian black metal with inspiration and emotions not far removed from what prog-rockers Goblin achieved with Dario Argento back in in the 70’s.” -Zero Tolerance “Stilla creates another recording that remains true to the melancholic black metal style of previous recordings and also mix the raw, atmospheric, melodic and progressive sides of the genre to create something very original” -Occult Black Metal Zine ““Skuggflock” (Shadowpack) is yet another tantalizing taste of a highly distinctive album made by a talented band who continue to follow their own twisting, turning, unpredictable path.” -No Clean Singing

Overview If, after meeting John Owen Kerr, the topic of discussion quickly turns to collecting Celtic Frost Cold Lake cassettes, one might assume the multi-instrumentalist behind Marsh Dweller has a love for metal based only in jovial irony. That assumption would be wrong, for Kerr (also of Seidr, Noltem, and Vit) has an expression of heavy music that deals with both the universal question of cosmic significance and a personal need to isolate oneself within the natural wombs of wind, water and woods. On The Weight of Sunlight – as with the classic, unhyphenated heavy metal of the ‘80s – you will find an album carefully constructed without filler, wherein no riff feels unnecessary, heart always transcends bravado, and a common sense approach to songwriting triumphs over mindlessness. Though the styles appear disparate at first glance (melodic death/black metal alongside pure heavy metal), the melding of genres is seamless, and you’ll find yourself drawn in for this entire 43-minute ride. No overly long, too-tech missives here: just a compactness and directness both refreshing and necessary in today’s bloated metal universe. Though a sense of chosen solitude permeates each track, Marsh Dweller was created in collaboration. Guest appearances from the likes of Tanner Anderson (Obsequiae, Celestiial), Andrew D’Cagna (Brimstone Coven, Obsequiae, Nechochwen) and Aaron Carey (Nechochwen, End) add additional textures to the already-varied work on display. Yet as before, each contribution adds just the right amount of color to John Owen Kerr’s vocals, guitars, and drumming, forming a rich palette of metal, compelling enough in its own right. Let The Weight of Sunlight fall upon you! Track Listing: 1. Cultivating the Cosmic Tree 2. The DUll Earth 3. Where the Sky Ends 4. Monumental Collapse 5. Heaven’s Empty light 6. Forks of the River 7. Feathers on the Breath of God 8. The Weight of Sunlight What the critics are saying: “The guitarwork is varied and memorable without being hammy or derivative, the drumming is suitably lively and dynamic, the atmosphere is convincing, and – with an average track length of just over 5 minutes – ideas are repeated at just the right times and never overstretched. Moments like the terrific beat shift in aforementioned “Sky” or the Wodensthrone melody-turned-tremolo riff of the closing title track show Kerr knows how to reforge his ideas for max effect, and the guest solo of Nechochwen‘s Aaron Carey on “Monumental Collapse” only add to the fun. With a bit more adventure and experimentation in the future, Marsh Dweller could very well become the next Panopticon. For now, it’s hard to ask for a better start.” -Angry Metal Guy “I can’t help but praise this album’s knack for sticking with the basics in an entertaining fashion, and this is definitely the sort of release that would really flourish in a playlist of similar artists. The current wave of folk metal is overwhelming in scale, and Marsh Dweller carries the flag with bold commitment.” -Sonic Sensory

Overview As lives are led with no thought given to the decay surrounding us, many share in the fault of oligarchs for the ravaging of the Earth. But not everyone is silent – and for those, the raging sounds of Minneapolis, MN’s Pestifere are a fitting rallying cry. Astride black/death/thrash riffs riddled with force-fed melody, the angered screams of guitarist/vocalist Lucas Scott confront mankind and its self-serving drive, which destroys the life-giving world we inhabit: “Vulgar apes, flailing through time and space … Trampling, consuming … Robbing history from those who have no voice”. With a somewhat Dissection-style approach tempered by ferocious thrashing reminiscent of Aura Noir, Pestifere levies accusation toward all human structures, like the skyscrapers peppering the band’s own home. Scott decries them all as being “monuments to our death … Forged on the lifeblood of the earth”. All together on this, the band’s second outing, careful composition meets chaos to form an overtly original attack on modernity for all who find solace away from human “progress”. Eihwaz Recordings is proud to release Hope Misery Death, by Pestifere, on CD and cassette, July 15, 2017. Track Listing: 1. Don’t Let the Winter Take You 2. Cormorant Tree 3. Peregrine’s Timbre 4. Dispirit 5. Suffer the Day 6. Tomb of Monumental Decay 7. Mine is a Strange Prison 8. To Those Who Lost Their Home What the critics are saying: “this one includes some high-energy, technically impressive instrumental work, but it’s also home to some darker, more atmospheric passages with acoustic picking and ghostly ambient sounds, as well as furious, thrashing assaults.” -No Clean Singing “There’s a lot of traditional metal band interplay, with stop-starts and thrash-inspired dramatic builds on opener “don’t let the winter take you” before going more straight up modern/”occult” black metal on “cormorant tree” and “peregrine’s timbre... “Mine is a strange prison” feels very early second wave Norwegian in its driving tremelo lead line giving way to grinding riffing, and finally “to those who lost their home” heads straight into Kveldssanger territory with its peaceful acoustic dirge. Can you tell I really liked this fucking thing?”. -Third Eye Cinema

Mare remains one of the enigmatic entries in the Hydra Head roster of artists, as this eponymous EP represents the band's one and only recording. This Canadian trio consisted of vocalist / guitarist Tyler Semrick-Palmateer, Rob Shortil on bass, and drummer Caleb Collins. The band had a short run from 2004 to 2007, emerging out of Toronto's death / tech-metal community with Semrick-Palmateer had cut his teeth on vocals in The End. On the five songs of Mare, the band assembled a menacing composite of styles and forms -sludge-metal, math-rock, classic prog idioms, and the diaphonic harmonies from Bulgarian chorals.

SELECTED QUOTES: “With such artists as Mike Patton, Tim Hecker, Ayal Naor, JK Broadrick, and more, Isis receive an extended arm to assist them in making their sound more dense, atmospheric, and more original than before.” Sputnik Music

Film and musical theatre also work into chimera of influences with the band mentioning that both 2001: A Space Odyssey and Jesus Christ Superstar had been in heavy rotation during the writing and production of the album. Sonically, Mare concentrates on monolith of trudging rhythms and densely packed riffs squeezed through numerous time signature changes and sudden shifts in velocity. Semrick-Palmateer's vocals are a unique feature to Mare's aesthetic, throat-scraping with bellowing howls and harrowing screams before gliding into the form of a silver-tongued crooner such Jeff Buckley or even Chet Baker. "They Sent You" and "Tropics" situates the beatific facet of the vocals in concert with gilded arrangement for French horn before the trio locks into a formidable post-hardcore groove of dissonance and crushed chord progressions.

Koen Holtkamp’s music is never quite what it seems. There are distinct textures, tones, structures, relationships, and references —the things that bring us back again and again, but the undercurrent remains elusive. For listeners unaware of Holtkamp’s solo efforts, most will have encountered him as half of the Brooklyn based duo Mountains (Thrill Jockey) —a project which has pushed musical boundaries for more than a decade. Voice Model wades effortlessly into this same ambitious territory, but focuses on the breadth of possibility activated by a narrow band of sonorities. It’s two interrelated works, Scene One and Scene Two, feature Holtkamp on piano, modular synth, bowls, cymbals and processing, as well as contributions by Nina Mehta on Flute and Josh Millrod on trumpet. Both sides, though in clear conversation, weave autonomous worlds - collapsing the ground between the historic efforts of Groupe de Recherche Musicales (GRM), New Age, and contemporary avant-garde practice, while sculpting their own worlds of sonic potential and understanding. Voice Model’s fascinating intricacy works gradually like the sediment of time, gathering beneath a pool of conflicting streams, and defying the normal expectation of structure and artistry. Though the album fits seamlessly into the larger body of Holtkamp’s output, his hand remains elusive. Sounds appear to have sculpted themselves - to have appeared from an organic inevitability. This is an exploration of discrete encounters within an electronic ecosystem - a world of chance, where the dimensions of time unfold. As its tones ricochet off each other, they lead us not to themselves, but towards a whole. Single tones and textures expand and bleed, generations of influence raise their heads and disappear into the shadows. Recorded in 2014 and 2015 before being allowed to percolate for the better part of a year, Voice Model finds an artist at the height of his powers —curious, and at equal ease with challenge and invitation. It’s singular and mature and welcomes listeners both seasoned and new to these territories. DRIF T MACHINE — COLLIDING CONTOURS RELEASE DATE LP / DIGITAL: UR088 — RELEASE DATE: May :6,Sept 201630,

2016

LIST PRICE : $20.99 vinyl is non-returnable

Berlin-based duo Driftmachine returns with another striking piece of music. “Colliding Contours” is a shape-shifting album made from kosmische, dub, Industrial and Avant-garde elements. It’s all held together by tense grooves and a post-club, eerie electronic atmosphere. The latest work of Driftmachine offers a complex dialogue between genres and music styles, transcending the familiar by generating a peculiar mood through its unique take on modular synthesis and its obsessive bass-structures and detailed rhythmic patterns. Within the haunted electronic spaces of “Colliding Contours” one can find a geometry made of dub, jazz and industrial techno lines, intersecting at ominous intervals; an unsettling companion for a late night trip or a tangled state of mind. The album opens with “Radiations”, a crawling piece with a slow rebound of electronic shocks fractioning into echoes and reverberations which could be heard as an initial dialogue between operator and machine (an idea Driftmachine formerly explored in their “Eis Heauton” EP). “Sans Soleil”, the second cut, introduces the perpetual motion sound sculptures that will be prevalent throughout the rest of the album. Terminal velocity is achieved as they hit the mark inside “Observant Sirens”, where the hard shapes drawn between the ‘riddim’ and the bass reveal the signature style of Driftmachine (formulated in their debut LP “Nocturnes”). Going up and down, with longer suites of meticulous, systematic assembly and darker dub patterns, we reach “Gaukelwerk” diving deep into cosmic space, followed by “Dogov Godov“ and its heavy post – industrial steps which are contrasted by ethereal layers of analog oscillation. With “Colliding Contours” Driftmachine, the duo comprised of Andreas Gerth (Tied & Tickled Trio) and Florian Zimmer (Saroos), have built an exhilarating new vehicle to deliver their vision. Go deep into the elegant menace of their sound through the unpredictability of modular synthesis. Produced by Andreas Gerth and Florian Zimmer. Mastered by John Tejada. LP limited edition of 500 copies packaged in an uncoated stock jacket with double sided insert, black inner sleeve, and free download coupon.

“Nocturnes”, the debut LP by Driftmachine was originally released in June 2014 and sold out quickly upon release. The re-release will be available on blue-transparent vinyl, and comes with revised black artwork. 300 copies LTD. “There’s an impeccable symmetry [...] intertwine electronic patterns that don’t quite belong together, creating a palpable sense of tension in the process [...] is all gutter dreams and evasive glances across rainy latenight streets, charged by a post-club atmosphere that suggests the heavy thwack of real life coming back into view.” — Pitchfork “ [...] redefines the lines between insomnia and slumber, is the dancing flicker of a bedside lamp by eerie electronics that will carry through the dark night.” — Dublab With Nocturnes, Driftmachine have created a psychoactive, dream-inducing stimulant of sorts: Evoking and maintaining a trancelike state, the duo’s six-part journey into the dark was originally inspired by reading The Rest Is Noise and listening to the music discussed in Alex Ross’ seminal book. The resulting soundscapes, redefine the lines between insomnia and slumber, between wraithlike dub grooves gone awry, the dancing flicker of a slack-joint bedside lamp, and eerie electronics. Six studies in precision: perfectly symmetrical structures that slowly spread their bass-heavy wings, sprawl like digital fungi, shift shape and – paradoxically – seem to drift and to obey the two captains at the helm. With its meticulously displaced details and intricate harmony layers, Nocturnes also evokes the electronic avant-garde of the mid-70s, think Cluster during the band’s Zuckerzeit era. Nocturnes keeps the balance between intense, dramatic metrics and rather complex, modulated melodies. Also nodding to Krzysztof Komeda’s compositions (especially his score for Rosemary’s Baby) and the haunting, uncanny vibes of Raime. Nocturnes won’t let you sleep. Produced by Andreas Gerth and Florian Zimmer. Mastered by John Tejada. On the occasion of the 2nd pressing of “Nocturnes”, we are very excited to collaborate with the Austrian avant-garde filmmaker Peter Tscherkassky to release an official music video of “To Nowhere part. 2”, track which serves as a score of “Manufraktur”, film of Tscherkassky original of 1985.

Carolina Eyck with American Contemporary Music Ensemble Fantasias for Theremin and String Quartet CAT# BSCR015 DIGITAL List Price: $9.99 LP List Price $21.98 - UPC: 634457738713 CD List Price $12.98 - UPC: 634457738720 Release Date: October 14, 2016. Genre: New Classical, Theremin Domain: Worldwide

World-renowned theremin virtuosa Carolina Eyck and American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME) come together for the first time on Fantasias for Theremin and String Quartet. Eyck composed these six Fantasias specifically for the 12” vinyl LP format, a practice reminiscent of early-60s Nonesuch releases. All performances were recorded in full takes with no editing. The result is an organic virtuosity that leads the listener through a wide range of sonic environments across the six pieces.

Highlights Translucent green vinyl gatefold LP package, limited edition. Deluxe 6-panel CD digipack with separate booklet. World-renowned thereminist Carolina Eyck gives stunning performances that elevate the instrument.

Eyck’s compositions range from slow-evolving arpeggiations reminiscent of Reich and Glass (see “Oakuunar Lynntuja” and “Dappa Solarjos”), to alternative bowing and fingering techniques that achieve an ethereal ambience (see “Leyhomi”), to athletic explorations reminiscent of Bartók’s String Quartets (see “Dappa Solarjos”). The titles were devised by Eyck and producer/label-head Allen Farmelo by scanning multiple Scandinavian languages for pleasing lingual combinations. Eyck’s striking theremin performances showcase her dead-aim intonation, her command of microtonality, her fluid melodicism, and her utter lack of self-consciousness as an improvisor. The vinyl LP is in a full color gatefold package and pressed on translucent green vinyl, with an essay by producer and label-head Allen Farmelo in the gatefold. The CD is a 6-panel digipack with the essay printed on heavy-weight stock in a detached 8-page booklet.

American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME) are a cutting edge quartet, performing with Bjørk, Blonde Redhead and more. US performance dates.

idée fixe JENNIFER CASTLE PINK CITY Greeted in Canada with five star reviews from Now Magazine and the country’s national daily The Globe and Mail, Castlemusic firmly established Jennifer as one of the country’s most talented singer/songwriters. Her intuitive take on musical tradition coupled with a deeply affecting and instantly recognizable voice soon found its way beyond Canada when Castlemusic was rereleased 8 months later on American label No Quarter Records. Profiles and reviews for the record subsequently appeared in Spin, NPR, Time Out New York and Brooklyn Vegan as Jennifer toured in support of the record throughout North America including support for kindred spirits Cass McCombs, Kurt Vile and Lower Dens. Perhaps the most notable praise was from Greil Marcus, writing for The Believer, who stated “Castle reaches a pitch of mystical transport so gorgeously ethereal she seems about to drift off into lands that don’t appear on any map”.

With promotion for Castlemusic slowing down in 2013, Jennifer returned to the studio to work on Pink City. A collection of intimate reflections on both the internal and external world, Pink City displays a sharpened musical focus showcasing Jennifer’s powers as a writer and performer amidst a new sense of sonic clarity. The reunited production team of Castle, Dave Clarke and Jeff McMurrich invited a host of musical friends to embellish their vision. Owen Pallett provides string arrangements for a number of songs including the cinematic opener Truth is the Freshest Fruit and stirring ballad I’m Like A Gun. Other notable guests include American folk legend Kath Bloom providing inspirational harmonica on side A closer Down River. Throughout the album downtown Toronto’s finest musical stalwarts, such as Ryan Driver (piano, flute), Mike Smith (bass, arrangements), Paul Mortimer (guitar), Jonathan Adjemian (piano and keys) and Brodie West (saxophone), provide stunning support.

Mile Me Deaf - Alien Age Vinyl LP

Mile Me Deaf is an experimental pop band from Vienna, Austria. Most songs were written and recorded by Wolfgang Möstl in his living room, but on stage they are a full functional rock and roll cabaret, who have shared the stage with The War on Drugs, Kurt Vile and My Bloody Valentine.

Tracklisting: 1. Invent Anything 2. Blowout 3. Shibuya+ 4. The World We Own 5. Alien Age 6. One Ark 7. Headnote#2 8. Where Else 9. Zither 10. Martian Blood

Wolfgang Möstl is known by some as the noisepop whizzkidd of Vienna, an image he probably got from his earlier bands Killed by 9V Batteries and Sex Jams. His solo-project Mile Me Deaf is more alternative pop than noise, dealing with his obsessions with 90's guitar tunes, quirky pop melodies and Jim Carrey movies. It has been written that “Mile Me Deaf lie in a guitar-pop realm between Yuck and Girls”

Includes Digital Download RIYL: The Avalanches, Beck, Pink Floyd, My Bloody Valentine

Mile Me Deaf will be touring the USA for the month of October with fellow Austrians Sex Jams. Do not miss this chance to see this show live!

TRACKLISTING: BLOOMS * SLOW SLOWLY * THE BALLAD OF A SMALL PLAYER * FALLING IN SLEEPER * IN RED AND RED * TRILLS * BROODS AND WAITS * LITTLE BLUE * PALE FIRE * OUTPOUR Dead Light was created after Anna Rose Carter and Ed Hamilton moved from London to a quiet, remote space in the countryside. The migration out of the sprawling metropolis to their new rural refuge was a transition that significantly impacted them both, and one that continues to turn and shift under the ambivalence of change, loss, and new beginnings… The reality of this new setting is an apposition between the quaint and serene nature of their new life, and the dislocation from the lives, people, places, and culture that they left behind; two conflicting sentiments that co-exist in a somehow beautiful, bitter-sweet relationship. Dead Light is the tension between these two states, a textured and imperfect dream world. Recorded at Pie Corner between September 2014 and May 2016, the eponymously titled debut album from Dead Light is a tender, ambient explorationof hope, escape, tension, and isolation. Rooted in traditional instrumentation and a hand made approach to effects and synthesis, Dead Light’s music drawsupon classical, ambient, pop and electro-acoustic influences. Waves of melancholy stretch through every track, with slow, yet expressive melodies that sing from tape-looped cello motifs, and an old close-mic’d piano that Anna’s grandfather gave her, yet the feeling of hope never seems to be far away. Distant and reflective, yet intimate and emotive, Dead Light’s sound is characterised by a plethora of analogue artefacts ranging from tape delays (via daisy chainedreel to reel machines), homemade synthesisers, old Russian microphones, 1950s tube pre-amps, as well as contact mics and hydrophones. Elements of their textured sound can be attributed to their experimentation with treated tape (warped in various ways via prolonged exposure to sunlight, vinegar solutions, microwaves and washing machines), hydrophones (placed in ice trays and allowed to freeze and thaw) and most noticeably, piano preparations (hand-muting strings, screwdrivers, coins, felt, using the soundboard as a plate reverb etc). Other experimental techniques can be found in ‘Sleeper’, for example, which utilises the layering of looped and treated voice, or in ‘Broods and Waits’ which uses experimental timbres of stringed instruments, and drone-like backdrops. ‘Falling In’, the first track they wrote after their escape from London, is a great example of their sound - involving the textural exploration of Anna’s old piano, coupled with Ed’s emotive tape treatments and loops. “‘Falling In’ is about beginnings, renewal, rebirth, travel - both metaphorically (escaping the city, learning a new collaborative language) and geographically. Technically it is the two of us establishing our sound with a handmade approach to effects and electronics (multiple reel to reel machines rigged up as multi-head tape delays, using the piano soundboard as a natural plate reverb, etc.)” - Anna and Ed 11 tracks in total, the Dead Light LP is an exploration of ambivalence, a sonic ethnography that contemplates a personal narrative of transition and identity.

AXIS: SOVA

MOTOR EARTH Love Identity ( Like An) Intruder Sanity Range Eyes Have It Unraveling Violent Yellow Emoticog (Jam 4) Routine Machine

GOD012 LP/CASS List Price: $20.98/$8.98 Release Date: October 14, 2016 NO EXPORT TO EUROPE, MOTOR EARTH TO THE REST OF THE PLANET

Just a little more than a year since last transmission and suddenly the rotation to Motor Earth signals a new day in the life and anti-life of Axis: Sova! We expect our music to reinforce perceptions of time as an arrow bolting forward, one way, into the future. But where’s the symmetry in that? Everything else in physics is two-way traffic; that’s the Faustian Universe that Axis: Sova scans for its rock. Where past, present and future are all pulling together, known together — as if we could get a clean link to that other hemisphere in our brain. We’re at the edge of the edge, how much further to the fringe? The fuzzing, burning film stock of Early Surf was like a solarized sound of discontent and not-belonging, a state of dissonance within a state of reverberating vocals, circulatory systems of guitar and test-tube rock beats. The mix was TWEAKED, slaved over in an endless night. Motor Earth trips that trend further, rife with percolating boogie, suicidal punk shredders and cavernous rock, but this time, it’s a planet cleared of sonic brush so as to cleanly reflect the star it orbits and the moon it mirrors. A key to this was working with a wider tape-head — Sova’s former four track fantasia is an ashy otherworld half re-

membered, replaced on Motor Earth by a broader expanse. Buoyant low end is well-defined rather than inferred, bearing out the robo-rock propulsion that drives Axis: Sova through space. Guitar grit remains profound, but distinctly un-smeared; here, the sound of the four-track is used as a tincture, an exotic accent to the flavor. Another thing was building a band vibe. See, Axis: Sova began as Brett Sova’s one-man operation, building up and stripping out parts from new and repurposed equipment, pitting meat against machine to find interplay, equilibrium. But touring the last two years as a band blew things wide open. Motor Earth demanded that same visceral, live approach, so Axis: live band mainstay Tim Kaiser’s input on guitar was necessary and utilized. Along with him, others from the Axis: inner circle visited to transmit one sound or another, telescoping Sova’s terms of psychic distortion into clearer sight lines. Studio takes were live in duo and trio style, even, driving deeper into a spontaneous countryside than ever before. All the while, alien hands working the boards for the first time. Motor Earth flames into action with the band ablaze, two guitars finishing each other’s sentences before expanding

in the ether, only to catch fire and plunge back to earth, reentering with steel-melting velocity. This is the moment of “Love Identity,” the keys to Motor Earth’s ignition. Past its album-opening arc of floating feedback, more songs reveal themselves in tightly wound chugs. “(Like An) Intruder” is a slab of classic snarl, “Eyes Have It” dances a serrated, two-note tumble. The flip stretches out — “Violent Yellow” swirls with paranoia before detonating into syncopated dual riffs; “Routine Machine” lopes a hot lead over a damaged progression, meditating like a funeral procession to album’s end. Motor Earth finds Axis: Sova assimilating back down on Earth, soaking in the flawed humanity and broken systems of the world, the repetitive nature of days and days, the course of years. Who’s getting off on the mundanity? Kiss the Axis and you will find a parallel world of time. You’ll find the human collisions that occur as we run from society’s dreams of total control, causing sprays of rust from the decaying undercarriage. It’s the meeting of the reptilians and the beast within — the good, odd vibes resonating in late nights and the blown-ear mixes: the fractured togetherness of us all, revolving on Motor Earth!

Following their critically acclaimed debut record, 2013’s Dark Holler Pop, Mipso released Old Time Reverie in fall 2015 to rave reviews from critics and fans alike. The record shot up the Billboard charts, where it landed at #1 on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart and in the Top 25 of the Billboard Heatseakers Chart. With songwriting hailed as “smartly written, hewing surprisingly close to gospel and folk while still sounding modern and secular.” (Acoustic Guitar), Mipso’s Old Time Reverie was named among the “Best Records of the Year” by The Guardian - for the band’s “aptitude for stunning harmonies” and for its “ lush and moving songs that feel as fresh as a warm spring rain.” With over 400 shows under their belt so far, and the permanent addition of band mate Libby Rodenbough, Old Time Reverie is a reflection of Mipso’s musical and personal growth. Their gripping, mature sophomore release finds the quartet expanding their sonic resources while doubling down on their experimentation with string band tradition. Influenced by the contradiction of their progressive home of Chapel Hill, North Carolina and the surrounding rural southern landscapes, Mipso’s Old Time Reverie dips in, explores and mixes the complexities of traditional bluegrass with modern instrumentation and smart pop melodies. The result is an intoxicating, distinctly unique blend of modern day Americana. Mipso is: Jacob Sharp (mandolin, vocals), Wood Robinson (bass, vocals), Joseph Terrell (guitar, vocals), Libby Rodenbough (fiddle, vocals)

RECENT PRAISE “[Among] the best…albums of 2015…[offering] lush and moving songs that feel as fresh as a warm spring rain... Outfitted with a guitar, mandolin, string bass, fiddle, and an aptitude for stunning harmonies, Mipso is poised to be a new sort of Nickel Creek for the rising generation of folk/newgrass fans.” – The Guardian “[D]eliciously distinctive...the picking is strong, the harmonies solid, and the tension between traditional musical tropes and the post-modern uncertainty of the lyrics makes for one satisfying sound.” – Nashville Scene "There’s no banjo, no twang, no high tenor, and no bluegrass overdrive. Instead, there’s a front-porch sweetness to their sound, a thoughtfulness that makes every note count." – Acoustic Guitar “Their songs are as heartfelt as they are intricately arranged in a way that is as forward thinking as it is rooted in tradition.” – Glide Magazine “Old Time Reverie soars with the group's sharp bluegrass composition and lilting harmonies. It also delivers complex and nuanced songwriting, strengthening Mipso's craft as storytellers.”- WUNC “Provocative and mature…their best work yet.” – Indy Week “The Chapel Hill quartet’s very fine new album Old Time Reverie is as sharp as they’ve ever sounded, 11 solid songs that go well beyond traditional string-band music with abundant pop sense” - News Observer

Mukqs has released solo experiments that take his tactics of tape-loop mangling and sample manipulation honed in the trio Good Willsmith to new heights of noise collage abstraction. Walkthrough, Max Allison’s first full length release on Hausu Mountain represents another complementary branch of his work: layered synth compositions performed on hardware electronics, inspired by the tones of classic video game music. Recorded live as a single session presented without overdubs, Walkthrough finds Allison winding through a song cycle of day-glo square-wave leads, busy electronic percussion patterns, and washes of low-end drone. Mukqs meshes the emotionally resonant melodies and synthetic timbres of the soundtracks to Super Nintendo RPGs like Chrono Trigger or Earthbound with the strain of organic synth exploration practiced by the likes of Cluster or Emeralds. For Mukqs and many musicians of his generation, video game soundtracks served as a formative entry point to electronic music at a young age. Instead of merely bridging the gap between Mukqs’s musical upbringing and his current experimental practice, Walkthrough reveals that no such gap exists.

MRDOUGDOUG - SOS FORKS AI REM hausmo50 - Cassette - $7.99

Doug Kaplan wants you to be happy, to stare into the digital void, and to merrily prank you into a puddle of fractals. As MrDougDoug, he makes music to entertain and challenge in equal measure. The MIDI-contorting sci-fi opus SOS Forks AI REM represents his debut album of solo material on Hausu Mountain. While Doug continues to explore the possibilities of noise improvisation and guitar performance in the trio Good Willsmith and other projects, SOS Forks AI REM finds him harnessing his in-the-box production experience to create an album entirely using software instruments. MrDougDoug drudges up pre-existing MIDI files from the Internet Archive’s Geocities Collection and freemidi.org and overhauls them to suit his twisted tastes. Kaplan’s style of re-contextualization balances the spastic urges of John Oswald’s plunderphonic pop experiments with the attention to production detail and cyborg texture of Oneohtrix Point Never - all while maintaining a sense of reckless glee and mischief reminiscent of The Residents’ stable on Ralph Records. MrDougDoug imagines a future where RIYL: Video game black speakers continue to shrink and shrink, from earbuds to phone speakmetal gamelan karaoke pop ers to biologically integrated playback devices sounding out of minuscule flesh amplifiers, blasting into the realms of unprecedented fidelities. C60 - orange shell with black imprints. ProSOS Forks AI REM, then, is what emerges from those pore-sized speak- dubbed chrome plus casers. Each note overloads the device, and each track overloads the brain. sette. 2-sided J-Card. 6

TALsounds - Lifter + Lighter HausMo 51 - Cassette - $7.99

The sessions of live-looped electronic improvisation that Natalie Chami releases under the TALsounds moniker continue to evolve in complexity and emotional resonance as she refines her approach to performing music as an everyday process. As part of the trio Good Willsmith, Chami’s self-harmonized choral vocals and recursive synth leads weave through her bandmates’ swathes of noise and abstracted “rock” instrumentation. Lifter + Lighter, her second full-length TALsounds release on Hausu Mountain, focuses the spotlight closer than ever on the direct physical reality of her meditative performance style. If 2015’s All The Way (HAUSMO32) offered a series of confessional, diaristic expressions of Chami’s experiences, rooted in specific events along her own timeline, Lifter + Lighter sheds any overarching personal themes in favor of a universal connection to her listeners. Instead of creating vehicles for specific moments, TALsounds hones the technical aspects of her craft, conjuring new inRIYL: Björk, Grouper, Holly spiration from the tones and improv strategies themselves that she Herndon, Eartheater workshops over her exhaustive home recording regimen. On Lifter + Fripp & Eno, Terry Riley 34457 74634 Lighter, Chami’s vocals sit closer to the front of her mixes than ever C44 - pink tape with before. Her clear human presence, coupled with her more legible black imprints. Produbbed chrome plus lyrical content, achieves a direct exchange with the audience in the cassette. 2-sided JCard. form of her most “song”-like sessions to date, all while maintaining the loose, no-overdubs quality of previous releases. The takes documented on Lifter + Lighter range from filmic expanses of pitch-black synthesis to pounding exercises of industrial rhythm to vocal-focused pieces closer in execution to R&B ballads. 3

“meditative songs that sound slaved over, but are in fact raw recordings without any overdubs.” - FACT “...the placid hypnosis Chami deals in is oddly metastatic - it’s both the skin and the core, spreading to every cell inside her songs. “ The Out Door “When she’s not teaching music at Chicago High School for the Arts, Chami makes keyboard jams for contemplative moments.“ The Fader

TALsounds unites these styles under the umbrella of her solo live performance, all poured from the same rig of analog synths, samplers, and loop pedals. Sessions like “I’m Just Around” churn over arrhythmic beats while Chami drops languid vocalizations into the increasingly queasy atmosphere. “Close My Eyes” and “Hair” draw tonal inspiration from Björk circa Vespertine, as Chami’s elegant music-box synth lines ping together between sighed verses that stack onto themselves over time. “I Am Why” finds her streaking into a harsher, glitch-inspired textural field, randomly erasing and segmenting her own looped vocals into a live-constructed stutter before piling on additional strata of sampled percussion. Album closer “Solace” represents a cathartic peak to Lifter + Lighter’s varied gradient of headspaces. The session captures the precision and spontaneity of her performances in equal parts with its slowly unfolding, suite-like structure. Atonal synth bursts howl in the darkness. Her vocalizations cut through and stir together in the center, compounding into a dense wall with each impassioned wail left to hover in her loops. TALsounds climbs up octaves as vocal phrases layer to their limit, before squelching peals of delay manipulation overwhelm the mix. As in all of her sessions, each of these decisions happened in real time - performed over the same time that it takes to hear them, pulled from two hands and a brain conditioned over a perpetually expanding journey of practice.
