Confirmation Bias

Drawing from the raw intensity of a band like Fugazi, Yeesh’s sound is simultaneously familiar enough to attract fans of Dillinger Four and Braid, but also challenging enough to push the envelop and feel like you’re listening to a new beast. —KEXP Yeesh functions like a less-sardonic Shellac, using chest-rattling bass lines and prickly guitars in the same way, but with a twinge of optimism that makes all that tension rewarding. —A.V. Club This one is a lot to wrap your head around, but when you do you’ll realize it’s awesome. —Stereogum Equal parts noisy and introspective, reviving a post-hardcore sound that touches on Japandroids’ energy and Cloud Nothings’ anger. —Consequence of Sound

A prickly, uncompromising record that captures both the energy of their weathered live show and forges a new, exciting path. —Stereogum Refreshing, grungy, gritty perfection. Haybaby are everything you love about grunge, punk, art rock, indie rock and riot grrrl rolled into one adorable band. —Noisey Haybaby sow brilliant sludge-rock tension and play with suspense through ever-foreboding melodies and fluctuating murmurs and howls. —SPIN We’re deep in the depths of gripping anguish, and Haybaby rock hard enough to carry it. —The Fader Sludgy, dark, emotive indie rock songs that are unsettling and inspiring all at once… just another example of Haybaby’s unique and inimitable talent. —Exclaim!

There are few things worse, or more damning, than peaking too soon. Just ask anyone who accomplished their greatest work before barely hitting the quarter century mark. Ask Orson Welles; ask any Olympic gold medalist. Wheaties boxes, increasing public indifference, and diminishing returns. Is that all there is? Guitarist and former wunderkind Daniel Bachman, at 26, can no longer be considered “precocious.” On even his earliest recordings, released under the moniker Sacred Harp, Bachman’s guitar prowess and compositional voice were staggeringly mature. There was something refreshingly novel about a guitarist not old enough to vote possessing such clarity of vision. But novelty wears off, and even the most big-eared benefactors are likely to become fickle and disinterested over time; the fans who do happen to stick around may begin to hold you to impossibly higher standards – after all, you’re not a kid anymore. And so it is a pleasure to hear Bachman, with Daniel Bachman, so confidently answer the bell with an album that serves as both riposte and reckoning. If you’re not with Bachman now, the album seems to declare, you never were. “Brightleaf Blues (I)” opens with an enveloping acoustic drone, Bachman conjuring with his slide a kind of signpost welcome. The drone gives way to lyrical, insouciant-sounding single note slides, which gain a quiet momentum throughout the piece. “The Flower Tree” is aptly titled, not just because the piece’s unhurried transformation from seed to full bloom is a thing to behold, but because of the small intricate details within, like the way his percussive arpeggios foreshadow the coming knotty, turbulent theme. Here the guitar is cast as a suddenly wild and intractable thing, like a ventriloquist’s dummy that becomes self aware and must be subdued or suppressed by its master. “Wine and Peanuts” is an evocative title that speaks to the dualism in Bachman’s work. Though his attack here, as on “The Flower Tree,” is forceful, almost violent, it is never inarticulate or blatantly exhibitionistic. Consider, also, “A Dog Named Pepper,” which showcases Bachman’s pastoral, placid side, recalling the stoned impressionism of early Windham Hill LPs, minus the stuffy grandiloquence. The tune’s wandering melody is broken up by gaps of negative space; indeed, the song’s final minute is little more than the sound of car tires slowly approaching over a gravel road, reminding us that it is a song that deals not only with time but of distance, of roads traveled and misremembered, of how every route is a choice that, by necessity, leaves other destinies unknown. “Brightleaf Blues (II),” like its counterpart, begins with a drone, this one softer and continuous, from which wide, keening slide guitar notes emerge like slowly expanding bubbles. Bachman sounds deeply connected to his environment here, the probing lines maintaining a steady, simmering focus over most of the piece’s quarter-hour duration. Then, about two thirds of the way into the piece, the slide guitar disappears, leaving only the drone, which now rings with icy, almost shrill, overtones, like the light from a nearby window hitting an ice sculpture. “Watermelon Slices On A Blue Bordered Plate,” Bachman’s take on the riverboat tune, may evoke the expected images of swamps and (it must be said) Fahey circa Of Rivers & Religion, but Bachman’s compositional style deftly sidesteps such clichés. The album ends with a rendition of the hymn “Farther Along.” Bachman’s choice to extract and ruminate on the tune’s melancholic aspects further reveals his good instincts: he plays it a bit like a nonbeliever, which is probably the best way to play it. His rendition suggests transcendence not as a given but as one of many possibilities, a best-case-scenario. Maybe ours are merely transitory struggles, the song seems to say, but then again, maybe they’re not. Truly a song for these insane times. With Daniel Bachman, the guitarist has made his most cohesive statement yet, an album by which future solo acoustic guitar albums by grown-ass men and women can and should be judged. Think of it not as Bachman’s Citizen Kane but as his Mean Streets. In other words, just you wait. -James Toth, July 2016-

“L.A. producer Shlohmo showed just how far the Brainfeeder template of abstract instrumental hip-hop could be stretched-- to gossamer, almost transparent extremes.” – Pitchfork

“Shlohmo makes breezy, lo-fi music that evokes DJ Shadow and more laid-back M83.” – The Wall Street Journal

“Shlohmo's "Bad Vibes" isn't merely its most accomplished release yet; it's likely the most fully realized work to bubble up out of the Low End Theory this year.” – LA Times

“The proudly lo-fi tracks are built from birdcalls, static, wordless vocals, electronic blips, not-always-tuned guitars, half-audible speech, stray clanks and rustles and ticks; it can sound as if were recorded on duct tape. The ingredients vary in each track, but Shlohmo is conceptually fixated, making nearly the whole album a set of variations on the idea of a languid vamp: almost always two chords, occasionally three.” – The New York Times

! ( It’s been waiting to happen. Beyond the mystical pyramids and the mountains of Mars, Looloo’s silhouette emerges. A demigod born out of intergalactic dust, this exalted creature moves to the music of an epiphany laden with pretzels and Cherry Coke bottles. Its electric guitar-shaped head chants the arrival of a new Golden Age of distortion, an inescapable voyage to the end of the world to reconnect with the beings who brought us intelligence and hard rock. If you could only see it, you would understand... Then one day, a band falls under its spell. Suddenly entranced by Looloo’s incomprehensible Sanskrit babble, the musicians are awakened to a desire for transcendence and communion of the spirits. As if each one of us were a small speck in the constellation created by Looloo’s vintage leatherette one-piece suit. Surely this ecstasy and elation will be short-lived. “Rencontrer Looloo, Chocolat’s second album after an extended hiatus, finds the band swimming through modal waters, somewhere at the confluence of hard jazz and surf metal, blended with a songwriting tradition that the media, for lack of a better term, often define as folk. A far stretch from the psychedelic kraut explorations of “Tss Tss, the new opus is a sort of initiatory account of the band’s journey into orbit. TRACKS THE UNBORN CAPITALIST FROM LIMBO REPLICA GARDEN of DELIGHT VIOLENT MOON ORDINARY PEOPLE EVENING GLASS FLU MOON ARRIVAL

NO CAPITALIST TO UK/EU!

Drag City, Inc. is pleased to announce the solo debut full length from Wand’s Cory Hanson. The Unborn Capitalist from Limbo was recorded during May of 2016 in various locations across Los Angeles County, and features string arrangements by Heather Lockie. It came on as a panic, a car wreck, shivering and sudden liquefaction. You tried to hold it, to tend and cradle the damn thing like a child. But injury would only yield to injury. You stood in the darkened theater. The beam of a projector sliced toward you down the center aisle and struck the bag of dry rice in your arms with an image of a factory fire. Tender chiding and all manner of suggestion wouldn’t give pause to the restless flicker. One moment you knew you weren’t holding the ghost of an infant horse kicked dead in a desperate moment by its own mother. The next moment you knew you weren’t holding a hunk of ornate driftwood. Not the head of a handsome purebred dog. Not a scene of two brothers wrestling in the backseat of the car. Not a honeybee drowning in the pink berry smoothie you brewed to wake up by. But the images were plain. Your refutations were beside themselves in the midst of a plan for things arrayed in light. Of course, you know the drill already. An organized understanding — pristine, therefore human — passes through a body on its wild, transmuting way from abstraction to matter careening through a minefield of physical laws. Value extracted at every turn. It’s a small and simple thing, just longer than a half hour of recorded music. Dressed in garlands of inherited words. Modest pools of rainwater punctuating the young volcanic expanse, marbled with fuel slicks.

The Unborn Capitalist is a secret that didn’t need to be kept — conceived of and executed while a droughted Southern California autumn became a droughted winter, became a droughted spring, rolled on toward a broiling summer. It marks the disintegration of a long and dear coupling. It marks a domestic rhythm traded for a touring circuit, for these shrinking obsessions and all their shadowy company. You turn the topsoil of an ordinary childhood pocked by its needling wounds, you compost it with the dead leavings of your meals, you try to make new space for the promise of seedlings. You move back in with your mom. You wake up each day and let the pets out to sniff around and stalk insects back and forth across the fenced-in yard. Accordingly, records like this accumulate. Life calls for music, for lyric, and if you can somehow handle them without needing to possess them, they echo back again as life, vital in its total excess. Hanson’s lyrics here are his best to date. By turns naked, leering, playful, evasive, they present a mute, parading statuary  —  doughy figures waltzing in doomed configurations through bleeding watercolor backdrops across terrains of tangled information. The music is gorgeous and livable. Every surface threatens with the promise of an untold depth; every depth threatens to collapse into a surface. Every place you ply a solution turns out to be an intractable edge. You go looking for the soul, but there is no soul— just the things you had to lift to look behind. Children of Limbo, we are gathered here around a floor lamp, a darkening purple desert stretching out in every direction.

Breathe  —  in through your nose, out through your mouth. Feel the energy passing through your body, from your head, down through your legs to the earth. Turn your heart to the sky — and realize that a new album from The Silence is nigh! Nine Suns, One Morning is the third album from The Silence since their formation in Tokyo in July of 2014. This is an amazing outpouring of music in a very short time! The reason for this is that The Silence transpose ecstatic moments from the rock and roll dreamscape into all-new, living music. Not only is there a lot of music in the ether yet to be realized, but The Silence are very good at this process! Despite the speed with with these albums have been dispatched over the course of just 21 months, each collection is gathered with an expert ear turned to the listening experience. Nine Suns, One Morning is one of the most explosive, far-ranging albums you will hear in 2016. The Silence employ a great variety of instruments with tremendous discipline, always in service of the songs, which share a goal of finding new lines of expression, no matter where

the starting point. This makes for incredibly exciting progressive rock music! While Nine Suns, One Morning is a fully-developed album of modern rock and roll that moves fluidly between ALL styles of music, many listeners are still unaware of The Silence, who have yet to tour outside of Japan, but are anxious to do so (as you will be when you hear their new music!). Masaki Batoh is the leader of the group, which he formed after dissolving the legendary Ghost in 2014. Forming the sound of The Silence, Batoh draws upon the indigenous and the mysterious aspects of the spiritual world, as exemplified by western rock, blues and British traditional music. He is supported in his endeavor by keyboardist and Bulgarian Tambula player (and original Ghost member) Kazuo Ogino; jazz saxophonist Ryuichi Yoshida; bassist Jan Stigter and drummer Futoshi Okano (Subvert Blaze, Hijokaidan). These men bring together a combined understanding of different values of music, literature, film, culture, psychology, philosophy and the spirit world that informs and expands everything they play together as they work to transcend the illusions of music that have existed until now. For those following the story, the previous album, Hark The Silence, emphasized the solvent quality of open air and the liquidity of free-flowing improvisation from which songs might eventually appear. Nine Suns, One Morning departs from the brooding gothic skies under which Hark the Silence’s slow-boiling jams unfolded, revisiting the song-based fixation that marked The Silence’s debut album. The difference this time is that the deep space accessed on Hark The Silence strikes into the new songs, infusing them with wider reach and greater cosmic power than before. The Silence are evolving into something new even as we listen to them! The song orientation of Nine Suns, One Morning is further expressed by the inclusion of a 7" single containing two cover versions. “Louie Louie,” the most elemental of rock songs, is shaken violently in best Silence fashion, while “No Expectations” is given a gossamer gospel treatment on the flipside. From honking sax to jazz time signatures to squalling psychedelic guitars, The Silence celebrate the transformative fusions of rock and roll music with everything that they do. The Silence stand against war, nuclear energy and racism. Music is how they make their stand. If only the politicians of this world could stand up so completely! Nine Suns, One Morning will change the way you live and love, if you accept it into your life.

PAPA M “HIGHWAY SONGS” CD

Papa M? Are you serious? The last time we said “Papa M,” it was 2004 and we were talking about a retrospective compilation album! There were no expectations, and none given! Sure, Papa M was attached to some of the 80s–90s greatest no-core records, especially if you consider his imaginary alter ego, one David Pajo. But that was a long time ago! So why then does Highway Songs spill into our ears with a newness, a vitality that only fresh blood can bring? Could it be because of all the blood? David Pajo’s been writing lines on the guitar since he was a bitty little kid. It sustained him through a lot of groups, like Maurice, Slint, Aerial M, Tortoise, The For Carnation, Dead Child. He’s played live too, and on records. And now that he’s grown up to be a bitty little man, what’s he gonna do, change? If you think so, you don’t know Pajo — or as he’s been known to sometimes go, Papa M. The instrumental sounds he’s made in the name of these names — on albums with names like Live From a Shark Cage and “Whatever, Mortal”— implied danger, violence and total alienation, alongside a peaceful, easy, good-willin’ and wide streak of broke-toothed black humor. So, after those classic albums followed by a long silent phase, broken only by a steady stream of sweet (and terrifying) pictures on Instagram, we’ve now got Highway Songs. Sounds pastoral. Bucolic, even. What’s become of the implication of mayhem in this title? Don’t worry. This album could be called “Wreck on the Highway Songs.” Or “Live From an Oxygen Tent.” You get it right away, when “Flatliners” bursts into full metal jackin’, igniting the Pajolian doom-rock inner magma into firey evidence. This is something new again, extra savage — like the kind of record you might record in between a suicide attempt and a severe motorcycle accident. Add in a little time for a few sessions to finish the album AFTER the bike accident, and you are literally talking about Highway Songs!

HOLE OF BURNING ALMS DC231

With a humble combination of sources, Papa M has traditionally traced his music from aboriginal blues all the way through the rock and on into 21st century classical (wait for it), exploring moments via an audio-diary verite. With each encroaching moment of Highway Songs, it sounds to us more and more like good old Papa M, as David throws back the veil of tears from recent times to bear witness to miasmic moodclouds passing not over but THROUGH him. Music from where the mind goes when the body is broken. Reflecting time spent hooked up to machines. A good person with bad thoughts, a story told in fragments picked up off the bathroom floor. Smashed cuts.

Highway Songs is the songs of a new man, but one made up of the old man with a few new metal parts inserted in key areas of the legs. There’s kind of a “Rear Window” quality to the record — watching suspiciously from a wheelchair at the comings and goings of the world around you, sorting out where the bodies are buried, making wild accusations, almost dying and eventually falling in love again and gaining release from the bondage of your own body. Whew! Right? It sounds tough, but the Papa M approach is laced with fun amongst the bristle, with loads of tasty playing and a dynamic that pits darkness vs light vs irreverence in a Mexican standoff. As before, it’s pretty much all played by Pajo, whose multi-instrumental flair (and Def Leppard-inspired one-legged drum technique!) speaks of the gumption and optimism that has always run under his bridge — along with the blood and water and sperm, massed together in a hypnotic flow. All these things are what makes Papa M, and it’s damn good to hear them, and him, again.

FOR TODAY CHANGE YOUR MEMORY

NO EXPORT TO EUROPE, SET IN MOTION EVERYWHERE ELSE If it seems brighter and a bit more deafening in the world today, congratulations! You’re not dead (yet) and some of your senses are still working. In fact, you might just be perceiving that there’s new Major Stars in the sky — one so formidable it’s already been named, and you haven’t even heard of it until now! Motion Set is the 9th Major Stars LP and their first on Drag City since 2010’s Return to Form, with Decibels of Gratitude appearing in 2012. This has left Starsheads around the world high and decidedly dry; for what reason a four-year gap, they’ve cried, instead of the rather more ideal two-to-three? The answer lies in the very core of the band as they’ve existed from the start: time and space are required to produce the necessary mass to tether their music in this flighty, over-oxygenated atmosphere of ours — and after eight records, it only gets harder to find a combination of possible elements requiring three guitars and a rhythm section in search of the ultimate release with every song they play. Fortunately, Major Stars don’t sell their process until it’s fully melded. C’mon, Wayne Rogers is no Johnny-come-lately to the scene of psychedelic guitar rock. He and Kate Biggar have been crossing axes to head-scrambling effect since the halcyon days of Crystallized

I BELIEVE YOU FADE OUT Movements, in the galaxy far, far away we now call the 80s. In the 90s came collaboration with Damon & Naomi in Magic Hour and Wayne Rogers solo records, before the debut of Major Stars at Terrastock ’97 — the first of several appearances they eventually made at the nowdefunct (and legendary) trips fest. As the years have passed, the band has evolved necessarily in their own expanding universe; since 2005, the Biggar/Rogers guitar duo has become a guitar trio, with original bassist Tom Leonard contributing to the murder of decibels. Vocally as well, Wayne’s lead vocs have given way to a string of she-singers who have brought new dimensions to the the sound. The finding of Major Stars material relies more on a feeling than anything else — intuition vs. accumulated knowledge, the years of process informing but never overwhelming the delightful pull of the knee-jerk if it is meant to be. As far as language is concerned, English barely cuts it! Writing for sextet involves greater complexity in the arranging of parts, but after that, there’s loads of playing and playing and letting go and seeing what that sounded like — an assembly process akin to working with playdoh in a room with no lights on. Every Major Stars record responds in one way or another to the one

before, and to that end, Motion Set commenced with a blackout-andstart-again moment: the pulsing energy of “Alert,” with a view towards making more super-happy, short blues rock songs. Of course, things happen along the assembly line; the title track was played for over two years and thrown away at least once before revisitation, revitalization and recording finally happened. Now, stripped down to a mood and built back to a towering frenzy, it’s the kind of song to name an album after. In a band built to achieve moments of six-string nirvana, vocalist Hayley Thompson-King provides a sufficiently versatile presence to span the crunching, ever-spiraling trinity of Biggar, Leonard and Rogers; with sirenesque flights, a reedy, Nico-like introspection and gritty, pugnacious flourishes to match the full complement of riffs being flung about. And thus, four years in the locaing — Motion Set. Major Stars have been capturing and distilling lightning into bottles for a couple of decades, with each record reaching beyond what they know and delighting in what feels good to locate their desire for exploration, obliteration and rock in the present moment. Motion Set nullifies the past while standing on its vanishing shoulders, reaching ever beyond. 

OVERVIEW Lorenzo Senni is a tireless investigator of dance music’s mechanisms and working parts. The Italian musician is also head of his own label, Presto!? and through the label and his own work has released some of the most unique electronic releases of the past few years. Much of his work serves as amazing deconstruction of sound and rave culture in the 90’s (chiefly trance and hard techno), carefully analyzing it’s constituent parts for reuse in a very different context, with repetition and isolation as key concepts. On his first release for Warp, Persona, Senni takes a brighter, more maximalist sounding approach to his always meticulous production.

PEGGY GOU SEEK FOR MAKTOOP Label: Technicolour Peggy Gou will release her new EP "Seek For Maktoop" via Ninja Tune's Technicolour imprint on 14th October 2016. Comprising three sweetly-swung, groove-focused productions coaxed from her beloved MPC3000, it's the perfect summation of Peggy's unique sonic signature.

CAT#: TCLR019 FORMAT: EP Box Lot: 20 UPC: 5054429006407

"Maktoop is from the Arabic word maktoob meaning 'written' or 'destiny' so the EP title could be interpreted as 'looking for destiny'," explains Peggy. "It's also a reference to two of my best friends: Sik (or 'Seek') and Bada (who taught me this Arabic word). They have always been very supportive of my music and I wanted to acknowledge that somehow." The Korean-born Berlin resident has quickly established herself as a rising star of the underground in 2016 showcasing her production prowess on a pair of 12"s for Matt Edwards’ Rekids label - "Art Of War" and "Art Of War (Part II)" - and an outing on Phonica's consistently excellent Phonica White imprint. Peggy has been equally impressive as a DJ too, playing alongside the likes of Ben Klock, Moodymann, Move D and KiNK and has found a fan in Jackmaster who has invited her to play at his upcoming Mastermix parties in Glasgow and Dublin in addition to the Numbers showcase at Bussey Building in London on 2nd December.

ILLUM SPHERE “GLASS”

Street Date: 11/11/2016 ZEN237 | ZENCD232 Ryan Hunn, also known as producer and DJ Illum Sphere, returns to Ninja Tune with his second full-length, Glass, on November 4th. Glass is fittingly his most crystal-clear statement to date, stretching nine dynamic but focused tracks which are given room to shapeshift within a larger, living whole. Pervading the album is a sense of detachment, most prevalent on standout tracks “Fall Into Water” and later on “Thousand Yard Stare”, the album’s longest statement at almost nine minutes. Glass follows 2014’s Ghosts of Then and Now as the producer’s second full-length effort, but sonically moves further in the direction hinted by his Spectre Vex 12”s and well-received mixes for fabriclive and Dekmantel. The reduction in output over this time a conscious decision to carefully signpost a change in direction. This same shift has also bled into his acclaimed DJ sets that have previously won him fans in Thom Yorke and Ben UFO leaving him poised now more than ever to delve into a sound all his own. ‘I wanted to make an album very different to the first,’ says the producer, ‘one with a different palette, pace and energy.” A change in “situation and style,” as he describes it, replaces the sharp turns and drastic shifts in altitude of his earlier efforts. Glass is a record steeped in mechanical depth and a beating cohesiveness, reminiscent of contemporaries Helena Hauff and Kassem Mosse, and positioning the industry’s best kept secret—Illum Sphere—to have a breakout year all his own. Catch Illum Sphere’s regular NTS show, every four weeks on the INT stream. Glass is released 4th November 2016 on Ninja Tune.

ROMARE

“LOVE SONGS PT. 2” Street Date: 11/11/2016 ZEN234 | ZEN232l | ZENCD234

Archie Fairhurst, aka Romare, gets amorous with his second album. A kind of follow-up or development of his second ever release, a four track EP entitled “Love Songs: Part One”, “Love Songs: Part Two”, explores every nook and cranny of the romantic impulse from dirty sex to religious fervour across ten tracks which develop and expand upon the casual brilliance of his debut, “Projections”, establishing him as one of the most exciting, confident and distinctive producers in electronic music right now. “Love Songs: Part Two” shows him expanding, deepening and developing his techniques. Although sampling from vinyl still plays a key role in his practice, Fairhurst has played much more of the music on this new record, from monophonic synthesisers to his grandmother’s recorder and his dad’s mandolin, with electric bass, plus a variety of guitars and keyboards taking central roles, too. Indeed his parents love of Irish traditional folk music, which Fairhurst grew up with have influenced the sounds on this album. His sample sources have changed a little, too, moving from the jazz and blues which distinguished “Projections” to disco and psychedelic. Indeed, the increased demand for his work as a DJ has caused him to develop his structures, allowing for more sustained builds in intensity. Whatever Romare does, though, it’s held together by his own unique aesthetic, a sonic signature which stamps everything he does as his and his alone. An original reaching the height of his game, it’s time to listen… and fall in love.

Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie, the creative force behind A Winged Victory For The Sullen and Stars Of The Lid, is to officially release his score for the non-fiction film ‘Salero’ on November 11th. Having channelled some of the most iconic drift music of our time through A Winged Victory For The Sullen and Stars of the Lid, 2016 has already seen Erased Tapes luminary Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie provide original scores for a number of feature films including Jalil Lespert’s ‘Iris’ and ‘The Yellow Birds’ by Alexandre Moors. It’s on ‘Salero’ however, that we see Wiltzie weave some of his finest work and deliver an expertly distilled accompaniment to director Mike Plunkett’s sprawling, uncompromising visuals. Set in Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat, the narrative follows the region’s ‘Saleros’ – those who have for generations gathered salt and earned enough to somehow carve out an existence in such a barren landscape. It’s with the discovery of huge Lithium reserves – a mineral used frequently throughout the tech industry – under the scorched earth that acts as a catalyst for exploitation of the environment and its people; holding a microscope to the drastic effect industrialisation has on local culture and tradition. “I have always said that composing music is infinitely easier when you have beautiful images to be inspired by. It was a pleasure to write a score over this captivating place of endless, glimmering salt before its impending demise. I was fascinated by this mythical space and its ability to define the identities of the people who live in its vicinity, where this vast salt flat itself would be a central character” – Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie Recording took place in Adam’s Belgium-based studio for the guitars, percussion and small string ensemble tracking. Hungary was chosen for the final large string orchestra recordings at Magyar Radio Studio #22 with the Budapest Art Orchestra. The original motion picture soundtrack to ‘Salero’ will be available on CD, vinyl and digitally from November 11th via Erased Tapes. Adam will be touring his Stars Of The Lid project across European cities this autumn including a performance at The Barbican in London. Tickets and more information can be found here.

The accompanying large 50-page outsize booklet shows how punk in France emerged out of the countryʼs history of rebellion and revolution (from Serge Gainsbourg to the Paris ʻ68 riots) as well as a love for American punk and proto bands like The New York Dolls and The Stooges, and was kick-started by witnessing the first UK punk bands (including the Sex Pistols who played in Paris in Sep 1976). It also explains how French revolutionary, artistic and intellectual ideas influenced the birth of punk in both New York (Dadaism and Surrealism, Rimbaud and Voltaire) and in Britain (Situationism), how Paris based art collective Bazooka influenced the work of Jamie Reed and The Sex Pistols, and more besides. The large booklet features extensive text, exclusive photography as well as interviews with key French figures in the movement including Marc Zermati (Skydog Records), Patrick Eudeline (Asphalt Jungle), Michel Esteban (Ze Records) and Eric Debris (Metal Urbain). Soul Jazz Recordsʼ new Punk 45 album comes as a heavyweight double vinyl LP with gatefold sleeve, inserts, full sleeve notes + download code and also as a deluxe CD pack + 50-page outsize booklet and as a digital album. NNA095: Tredici Bacci “Amore Per Tutti” Vinyl LP Over the last few years, the young musician and composer Simon Hanes has worked tirelessly to channel his deep love and infatuation with 1960’s/1970’s soundtrack music into his own personal vision and homage to the style through dedicated songwriting, and the integration of the totality of his musical influences. After graduating from New England Conservatory and spending time playing bass in the then-Boston-based No(ise) Wave unit Guerilla Toss, Hanes adopted the “Luxardo” persona as an arranger, composer, conductor, and guitarist, and went on to assemble a band of epic orchestral proportions. Consisting of close friends and fellow classically-trained musicians, the resulting band is the ambitiously sizeable 14-piece Tredici Bacci. NNA Tapes now has the distinct honor of presenting their first full-length album “Amore Per Tutti” to the world.

Tredici Bacci’s 2014 recorded debut EP “The Thirteen Kisses Cassetta” on NNA introduced the masses to the Luxardo sound world, ripe with the sounds of a past era of time. Now, after nearly two years of diligent work and craftsmanship, Hanes has created an album that presents the next logical step in the band’s development. Retaining the same sonic influences that they wear proudly on their sleeves - classical Italian and French soundtrack music of the Sixties and Seventies, Spaghetti Westerns, big band jazz, lounge, and showtunes to name a few Tredici Bacci introduces the element of artistic collaboration to bring the band to the next level and give way to a modernization that creates a unique sound like no other. United not by style, genre, or approach, but rather by a mutual love for these classic sounds, Hanes has assembled an incredibly diverse cast of guest musicians to work side by side with his band, ranging from well-known and established musicians like JG Thirwell (Foetus), Charlie Looker (collaborator of Zs and The Dirty Projectors), and Jennifer Charles (of Elysian Fields and Lovage; collaborator of John Zorn), to modern underground heroes like Ryan Power (NNA Tapes) and Ruth Garbus, to the obscure Italian virtuoso Vincenzo Vasi. This collaborative element forms an unexpected cohesion through Hanes’ talents as a visionary arranger with supreme orchestral chops. When all is said and done, “Amore Per Tutti” is the perfect statement of the goals and aims of Luxardo and Tredici Bacci. It is a record of colorful pop explorations that are rooted in musical timelessness, but are also steeped in modernity through the spirit of collaboration, checking all pigeon-holes and categorizations at the door. Hanes’ depth of knowledge of music is made apparent through the wide variety of styles, techniques and moods that he is capable of utilizing alongside his highly talented band, together showcasing true, unbounded musicianship. In an age of information overload and compartmentalization, contemporary dilemmas such as genre or trend can end up imposing limits on creativity. The music of Tredici Bacci, however, seems to transcend these hurdles by celebrating the inherent beauty and love in all music. “Their touch is goddamn perfect, including technical tropes you’ll recognize as updates of everyone from Nino Rota to Ennio Morricone and way way beyond. Largely instrumental, the sound blends mysterious lone trumpets, plonking percussion twangers, syrupy organ bleeds, swathes of strings (real or imagined) and clomping rhythms in a way that’ll make you sit straight up in your chair and yell, “Ciao!”” -Byron Coley, 2015

NNA Tapes presents “Housed”, the latest work from die Reihe, the project of New York City based sound artist and engineer Jack Callahan. After years of experimenting with electronic music, composition, and modular systems, the recent work of die Reihe has found Callahan operating on the outermost extremes of conceptual art, the avant garde, and minimalism. Crafting a unique style over the years through a series of live performances and releases on labels such as Ascetic House, Jeff Witscher’s Salon, and his own Bánh Mì Verlag imprint, Callahan has more recently distilled his approach to composition by holding a microscope to various genres of music and focusing on a single element within them. On “Housed”, Callahan turns his lens to this classic style of dance music and investigates one often overlooked component - the chords. Using his personal knowledge of and passion for House music, Callahan has extracted the chords from over 250 classic House tracks by 150+ artists, and used them as the building blocks for composition, much like his dissection of Trap music drum fills on his “Trap Studies” cassette (Anòmia, 2015). These rhythmless chords, which range from quick synth stabs, pulsing bass swells, jazzy piano notes, and warm electronic melodies, take on new life when separated from their beat-laden former bodies. Typically used for live DJ mixing to create overlapping seamless segues between tracks, these chords are rarely heard on their own in a club context, and are now liberated by die Reihe to exist as sound alone without being tied to the function of rhythm inherent in dance music. As opposed to the more expected approach of using these chords as the raw source material to be manipulated with digital processing, effects, or layering, die Reihe opts out of personal artistic expression and instead assumes the role of “Organizer”, presenting the sounds raw and as-is, in two arbitrary seamless combinations: randomized (Side A), and shortest to longest (Side B). This approach relates in some ways to Cage’s systems of Chance operations, as well as to Kenneth Goldsmith’s ideas on “Uncreativity”, or to more Dadaist procedures such as Assemblage or Duchamp’s “Readymade” works. By keeping the artist’s hand very light and recontextualizing the sounds within music from a highly conceptual standpoint, die Reihe is able to transform the dimly lit kinetic energy of a dance club into the stark white walls of a gallery.

File Under: Experimental / Electronic Label: NNA Tapes Catalog #: NNA094 SRP: Cassette - $8.99 USD UPC: Cassette - 634457753242 Formats: Cassette, Digital NNA happily presents the latest work from the young Baltimore sound artist Max Eilbacher. Perhaps best known for his work as a bassist with polyrhythmic Krautrockers Horse Lords, as well as the Drainolith live band, Eilbacher has foremost been working for many years in the realm of experimental electronic music. Using self-built systems of modular synthesizers in conjunction with computer music techniques, Eilbacher has created a highly original and personal style of abstract music, as made evident through his brilliant full-lengths of the past few years, including works such as Red Anxiety Tracers (on Spectrum Spools) and Subtle Scatter (on Fogged). NNA Tapes is now proud to offer Eilbacher’s latest recording “Schizophrenia as Architecture”. The four pieces that comprise “Schizophrenia as Architecture” utilize an almost overwhelmingly wide variety of sound sources and techniques in order to create concrète sound worlds with an incredible amount of depth and movement. Constantly shifting, it almost seems as if no two sounds repeat themselves, tirelessly building as the piece unfolds. This compositional restlessness is highly welcomed, as it succeeds in creating a kinetic intensity that often builds to levels of boiling, bubbling insanity that border on the maniacal and absurd, but are anchored by high brow musicianship. Electro-acoustics and field recordings are integrated and layered with such surgeon-like precision that it becomes nearly impossible to distinguish what is ‘electro’ or what is ‘acoustic’ in origin. This technique also produces an unbelievably textured listening experience that tickles and massages the brain, producing high levels of sonic physicality that almost transcend a mere listening experience, becoming an increasingly physical one as the piece moves on. Eilbacher’s personal experience with computer animation and 3D rendering become evident here, creating tactile sensations that seem to reinforce the role of musician as sculptor. Perhaps the most exciting thing about Eilbacher’s music is his seemingly limitless palette there is no trace of conceptual limitations, analog vs. digital pretension, or any self-imposed borders - nothing is off limits, even the kitchen sink. Spoken word, sound poetry, field recording, object manipulation, fm synthesis, and digital processing are all eagerly thrown into the fray. The elements of this liberation are bound together by Eilbacher’s greatest strength - his vivid imagination, which succeeds in establishing an original, creative voice that pushes sound abstraction further into uncharted territory.

The warmth of the kick drum. It’s important to remember to take a breath in this world. The studio and the club can offer similar experiences in that regard but it never feel like it’s running away from things. the opposite: it’s in those moments where we stop that we can feel the most alive. We’re constantly being told that modern generations have no attention span but it’s simply not true. There is more out there to distract us but we have not changed as humans. Kids now want to go and listen to a DJ play for ten hours and become locked in their world. A mix CD, like an album, is designed to be listened to from beginning to end. It’s something I still firmly believe in."

Four

years after their inaugural union at Ecstatic Music Festival inside New York City’s Merkin Concert Hall produced a cosmic din for the ages, two genreobliterating renegades who’ve made indelible marks in the experimental music pantheon—the NYC-bred, Parisbased avant-garde guitar legend and minimalist composer Rhys Chatham and long-running psychedelic free-rock juggernaut and Brooklyn institution Oneida—have joined forces on their first collaborative album proper titled What’s Your Sign?, due November 11th, 2016 via Northern Spy Records. With pedigrees carved in hall-of-fame-caliber collaboration and ever-expanding symphonic ensembles (a Chatham touchstone is A Crimson Grail (For 400 Electric Guitars) while Oneida’s twelve hour long freeimprovisational drone-fests is stuff of legend), it’s no revelation the legendary composer and No Wave veteran and the left-field freethinking noisemakers would make for kindred spirits. “Collaborating with Rhys was a way for Oneida to connect with the legacy of NYC experimental rock,” explains Kid Millions. “It was gratifying and exciting that Rhys was completely wide open. No hesitation as he stepped into the O.” As it turns out, Chatham stepping into the O—a sonically deep and sprawling mind-fry of triptastic psych-stoner dirges and marathon-length organ-splattered space-jazz noisescapes—was a match made in drone, noise and Motorik groove heaven. But even Chatham had jitters upon entering the hypnotic sound-world that would ultimately serve as the foundation for What’s Your Sign? “When I first met up with the merry men of Oneida at their rehearsal studio in Brooklyn, I was a little nervous about how things were going to go, because I was thinking of them as basically a rock group, perhaps with a bit of an edge and a bit of noise, but essentially rock,” recalls Chatham. “I was nervous about it because I was coming to the session with my Outdoor Spell loop/delay setup, and I wasn’t too sure about how that would work with straight ahead rock. So you can imagine my surprise when the drummer, Kid Millions, started playing in a style that owed more to free music and noise than it did to rock. And so did what the other guys were playing. It worked just fine, and the music sounded great!” With six compositions credited to Oneida and Rhys Chatham, What’s Your Sign?—Oneida’s first set of original material since 2012’s A List of the Burning Mountains and Chatham’s second LP in 2016 (Pythagorean Dream the first) and third overall for Northern Spy—is an exercise in

freethinking sonic explorations from an uncompromising, genre-defying group whose collective output has shaped the experimental music landscape extending over the last four decades. Recorded and mixed at Menegroth The Thousand Caves by Colin Marston, Oneida and Rhys Chatham and mastered by James Plotkin, What’s Your Sign?’s six shapeshifters are ecstatic journeys into a psych-rock future-world. Warped, alien jam action like the jet engine-drone roar of “Well Tuned Guitar” and the in-your-face noise-rock screams of “You Get Brighter” harken back to the legendary free-improv allnighters that took place at The Ocropolis, Oneida’s former studio/performance space in Williamsburg. Even with Chatham thrust deep into Oneida’s sounddeconstructing fray, the songwriting process didn’t stray too far from the norm of past efforts. What’s Your Sign? was born out of playing together, jamming on monolithic riffs and squelching electronics, discussing and editing. Both “Civil Weather” and “A. Philip Randolph and Back Bay Station” approach firebreathing 60’s free jazz vibes driven by Millions’ rolling and manic beats and ear bleeding double-horn-fueled drone, thanks to a Hanoi Jane-Chatham trumpet duet. In the end, the instant chemistry betwixt he and Oneida is what makes What’s Your Sign? such a seamless and natural partnership.

May 2014, arriving home after hearing the Café Oto

performance now released as Amalgam, I began to write. Over time the text developed, augmented by relevant dreams, literature and boxing metaphors, to become integrated into my book, Into the Maelstrom. This is an extract from that passage: “In the grey time of the gig, the drift away time, smell of room time, the time when magical implements and instruments are compressed into their road-sick cases, I watched from an eye corner as the tall man persuaded Christian Marclay to hand over a shard of plastic, placed the black dagger in his bag, then headed home. This savage triangle I recognised as debris...one of many during a duo with cellist Okkyung Lee in which their streams of interpenetrated sounds felt as volatile as live power cables, lightning strikes, snake bites, roaring bears, the finessed husbandry of potentially catastrophic rock falls. Something about the implacability of Okkyung Lee, the steel edge of her cello, not in its sound so much as its unmoveable force, something about the need to react to her presence as grit, as grinding, enforced a move away from the turntables out of which Marclay had been unleashing sound up until that point. Close in to a microphone, he was scratching a record with his fingernails,

After the gig I had stood still on a spot that seemed to confer invisibility, observing, waiting, listening. Somebody new to the whole business said to me, why doesn’t everybody know about this music, why isn’t it celebrated and presented in big concert halls to huge audiences? She was alight with excitement, the shock of the new. Somebody else said, but it’s not always as good as this. I said, well isn’t that true of all music, whether it’s composition, improvisation, popular, esoteric, critically acclaimed, classic, old, new, whatever? Some is great; the rest is mediocre or otherwise unforgivable... “Listening now to the recording, more than two years later in a totally different environment is a markedly different experience, yet the intensity that made the concert so remarkable remains palpable. As finely poised as a tug of war between a steam train and a herd of wildebeest, this is music that celebrates all that is volatile, uncompromising, hypersensitive and deliriously inventive in improvisation. - David Toop, September 2016

The aggressive and sublime first album by the band Elder Ones, “Holy Science,” is a kind of gauge for how strong and flexible the scene of young musicians in New York’s improvised and experimental music world can be. Ben Ratliff, New York Times

AMIRTHA KIDAMBI ELDER ONEs HOLY SCIENCE Elder Ones is the quartet performing the compositions of vocalist Amirtha Kidambi (Seaven Teares/Mary Halvorson’s Code Girl). Situated within concentric musical circles and communities in New York City, her collaborators saxophonist Matt Nelson (Battle Trance/ Tune-Yards), bassist Brandon Lopez (Nate Wooley/Joe Morris) and drummer Max Jaffe (JOBS/Man Forever) have crossed paths in the DIY underground, in incestuous circles of free improvisers, and concert halls of angular new music. The instrumentalists chosen for this project draw from a wide variety of vocabularies from jazz and rock bands, to the avant-garde, each bringing their own highly individual language to the group. The quartet uses composed material and open structures for ecstatic improvisation, over a bed of harmonium drones and synthesizer like non-idiomatic playing on the instrument. Visceral vocal and saxophone techniques, and an intense rhythm section dynamic, lend an urgency to the compositions. Oscillating between worlds of Raga and microtonality, to jagged rhythmic precision and punishing brutality, Thyagaraja, Alice Coltrane or Stockhausen could be equally suspect sources of their sound. Singing Indian devotional Bhajans with the harmonium since a young age, Kidambi gravitated towards the instrument as a compositional tool and accompaniment, drawn to its timbre, intonation and mystical qualities. She was also inspired in part by her work with Darius Jones and the Carnatic improvising tradition, to use abstract syllables and phonemes to liberate the voice from specific literal ideas to facilitate unhindered improvisation, and to allow the listener a greater range of interpretation. The quartet’s debut album HOLY SCIENCE is a suite of music named for the four Yugas or eons of cosmic time in Hindu mythology. The four movements Sathya-Yuga, Treta-Yuga, Dvapara-Yuga and Kali-Yuga, explore themes of creation, destruction, and rebirth, with the final movement pivoting on the Vishnu Sahasranam Vedic chant, and ending with a violent apocalyptic reset of the time cycle.

Tones react to the muttering of memory and recollection (before vanishing, lost forever), or to the artist’s respective environments (a picturesque Norwegian village, a lost river found buried at the end of a suburban garden, a stone sphinx blanketed in snow watching over the relics of a crystal citadel). As influenced by Messiaen’s ecclesiastical organ works as Uncle Tupelo’s last round of alt.country cuts, as energised by the non-idiomatic innovations of Derek Bailey as the Delta deviations of Loren Connors, Bumblin’ Creed is an extraordinary piece of enchantment that ranks right up there alongside the best material these guys ever produced, a slow-motion country crawl, the soundtrack to your spiritual baptism: listen close, and be born all over again.

Between

them, British folk phantasms Padang Food Tigers (Stephen Lewis and Spencer Grady) and Norwegian harmonium player Sigbjørn Apeland have recorded for illustrious imprints such as ECM, Hubro, Bathetic, Scissor Tail and Blackest Rainbow. These past offerings are engrained with a rich devotion to various branches of traditional composition – church music, country and folk – yet seek to dissemble those well-worn forms under the aegis of extemporisation. Both parties are collating a formidable canon of après organic ambient, venturing beyond the all-prevailing placebos tailored by so many sleep-starved somnambulists. These guys offer up genuine alternate atmospheres with an emotional pastoralism that speaks with a deep heartfelt feeling, undeniably immediate and open. Theirs is a music inviting, or rather insisting, upon a listener’s self-projections – aimed inward towards the soul, outward in boundless leaps of imagination. Bumblin’ Creed, this collaborative venture for Northern Spy, finds these kindred spirits revelling in their new-found alliances. A shared vision now bears its artistic fruit, borne of an unshakeable belief in the beauty of the passing moment and the intrinsic need to harness precious seconds in the slow-motion passing of a reductionist blues, a child’s plaintive plea or the creak of an old wooden chair (listen,

“This duo of Spencer Grady and Stephen Lewis attain a film-like quality with wistful piano sprinkles, bare-boned, John Fahey-inspired guitar picking, and ambient field recordings over a heaping plate of negative space, something like the soundtrack to a Sherwood Anderson short story, if you can imagine that.” - Decoder Magazine “Padang Food Tigers explore the legacy of Ry Cooder’s much-loved soundtrack for the film Paris, Texas. There’s that same sense of emptiness, mournfulness, of lost love.” - BBC “This Norwegian harmonium player (known for his duos with fellow countryman/fiddler Nils Økland) subtly constructs waves of sound from church and folk music traditions.” - Jazzwise

Blues harmonica innovator Little Walter was a critically important creative force. Between his brilliant, combustible musicality, equally incendiary temperament, penchant for hard living and tragic death at 37, he exerted an influence so pervasive and profound that, much like his bandstand boss Muddy Waters, he has assumed an almost mythological stature in blues hierarchy. As the first musician ever to bring the microphone right up to the harp, cupped within his hands, Little Walter was revolutionary. Prior to that breakthrough, the microphone was almost never removed from its stand; it was static, an immobile object which the performer catered to, but Little Walter completely exploded that limitation. The simple physical act alone was audacious, but Walter took it the full route, also experimenting with squeezing the most out of an amplifier, cranking it all the way up and adding distortion, introducing wild new sonic dimensions for the instrument. His development and use of these techniques were nothing short of revelatory and profoundly enhanced and expanded the entire genre’s impact and range. Walter’s mixture of sensitivity and technical innovation was unbeatable. His innate musicality was intimate, intense and deeply expressive. He was able to coax an unprecedented, spectrum spanning variety of tones out of his harmonica, from explosive peaks to low, wounded subtleties Little Walters’ mastery of both a loose, relaxed feel and dynamic musicality made for some of the finest blues records of the post war era, both his own solo sides and the trove of classic collaborations he undertook with Muddy Waters.

MUDDY WATERS

Mississippi born singer-guitarist Muddy Waters was much more than an influential blues man, he was an artistic epicenter, a rare, luminous astral body around whom it seemed, at certain points, the entire post-war blues galaxy was centered. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Muddy represented the celestial pole of the blues’ very center, a point of connection between the music’s symbolic heaven and earth, one through which flowed a surging force so powerful it not only affected how musicians performed, it reached into the very social-cultural fabric of the nation, and eventually the world. Bound together by a rare symmetry of creative elements, he also ultimately represents a uniting force that, through his pervasive influence on rock & roll’s practitioners, brought black and white together at time of profound division. Muddy Waters changed everything. He proposed a modern blues reality so tangibly potent and loaded with soul deep appeal that it was like a portal to undreamed of realm, and all who entered therein were made a gift of Muddy’s singular philosophical rhythms and truth. As a ringmaster for rock & roll— a Godfather who not only facilitated but also participated by leading Chuck Berry to the recording studio, inspiring and touring with the Rolling Stones—he is completely unique all over again.

“Had the Charlatans been joined by Country Joe’s keyboard player and fronted by an earthy female singer, they might’ve sounded like Marvin Gardens...” —Mike Stax, Ugly Things Magazine Phenomenal anthology of late-60s, electric-folk/garage-psych alchemists Marvin Gardens. Comprised of unheard Warner Bros. audition demos, a self-released EP, and an inspired live performance from the legendary Matrix club in S.F., 1968 captures virtually all recorded evidence of a dynamic and mesmerizing band that existed for only a couple years at the tail end of the 60s. Lead singer Carol Duke was a wisecracking lesbian from Lubbock, Texas, with a deep knowledge of folk music, the vocal power and conviction of Grace Slick and Janis Joplin, and a spine-tingling pop-melodic purity. The young and fearless band jumped right into her large repertoire of folk, blues and standards – often without ever hearing the originals – and intuitively crafted sonically adventurous and emotionally compelling versions that completely stand on their own. Marvin Gardens had elements of molten Quicksilver, the Dead’s cosmic blues, Big Brother’s grand gestures and the city’s open-hearted folkie past, as well as heaps of grit and humor, with shadings of the Velvet Underground and The Charlatans.. High Moon Records has created the ultimate document of a group that should have been a bigger deal and still very much deserves to be heard.. • Remastered from the original source tapes by multi-Grammy nominee Dan Hersch • Liner notes include an insightful essay by Ugly Things’ writer Mike Stax, reflections from band members and associates, and archival photos • CD in a deluxe custom Digipak with a full-color, 32-page booklet • LP pressed on high-quality RTI vinyl with a 24-page, magazine-sized booklet and download card for 5 exclusive bonus tracks in a limited Numbered Edition of 2000 • Original cover and back art by legendary underground cartoonist Larry Welz

MANDOLIN ORANGE BLINDFALLER CD AVAILABLE NOW LP WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE: NOVEMBER 11, 2016

Blindfaller builds on the acclaim of Mandolin Orange’s breakthrough debut on Yep Roc Records, 2013’s This Side of Jordan, and its follow-up, last year’s Such Jubilee. Since then they’ve steadily picked up speed and fans they’ve earned from long stretches on the road, including appearances at Austin City Limits, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Newport Folk Festival, and Pickathon. It’s been an auspicious journey for a pair who casually met at a bluegrass jam session in 2009. As the duo’s songwriter, Andrew Marlin sharpens his lyrical prowess here, touching on broad themes of growing older and feeling helpless in a world torn by injustice. Sure, the album sounds classic, but it is rooted in the here and now of our daily headlines.

GENRE : ROCK / ALTERNATIVE FILE UNDER: “E” E, “Z” Zedek, Thalia “K” Karate, “N” Neptune RELEASE DATE : November 11, 2016 NO EXPORT (JAPAN, S. AMERICA EXPORT OK) TRACK LISTING: E, the trio of Thalia Zedek (Come, Uzi, Live Skull), Jason Sanford (Neptune), and Gavin McCarthy (Karate), have crafted an album that fuses an explosive, industrial sound with the patience and reservation only practiced songwriters can invoke. While each member has decades of experience in the alternative scenes of rock music, their collaborative efforts have combined in a work that is both unlike anything that’s come before them, and the result of three veterans working in total harmony. What sets E apart from their contemporaries is their almost youthful willingness to experiment, while having the maturity to show restraint and austerity. On their self-titled debut album, E have developed a sound that is both mechanically oriented and emotional, a combination they could only describe as “soul music for machines.” Zedek and Sanford first began working together in 2013 out of a desire to dive into a musical outlet more collaborative than their more solo-oriented efforts. Drawn by mutual respect for one another’s artistry, the two were energized creatively when exploring the combination of Zedek’s unmistakable voice and inventive guitar lines with Sanford’s sculptural homemade metal guitar sounds and stomp box rhythms. Zedek and Sanford approached longtime friend Gavin McCarthy about expanding on the unique sounds. Although McCarthy, a fan of E, originally thought of himself in the band on bass, once he was added as the drummer it became immediately clear that his expressive and agile playing was all the rhythm section E needed. E defies expectations - while having no bassist, the sound is driving and with an emphasis on rhythm. “Delicate Fingers” is a great example of their inventive approach. The propulsive tom-heavy drumming of McCarthy in tandem with Sanford’s specially crafted bass-tone stomp boxes provides a relentless drive. Each member sings on the album, bringing their own lyrics and melodies to the table, and sometimes crossing and interweaving with another’s vocals. Where most bands with more than one singer might gravitate towards harmonies, E instead showcases each player’s voice as an individual, with McCarthy even providing some of the albums fiercest vocal performance on the explosive “Candidate.” Several songs find the band trading lyrical and vocal duties, such as “I Want to Feel Good,” where Sanford’s mantra “I want to feel good” trades off with Zedek’s impassioned lyrics about immigration. The name E itself is representative of the band – a trio of lines, each equal in length, each sticking out equally from a base. Because each player is so distinguished and distinct in their playing styles, E is able to exhibit total control over their sound, while still focusing on having the freedom to experiment. Whether it’s stomping on a wooden block housing the blade from a hacksaw for bass tones, or approaching the drum kit as a melodic instrument, the band said themselves, “it’s about freedom.” Also available from Thalia Zedek Band :

E will be touring extensively throughout the U.S and Europe to coincide with this release “E offered loud, layered power-trio rock, shifting the spotlight among guitarist-vocalist Thalia Zedek, drummer Gavin McCarthy, and Jason Sidney Sanford on homemade, scrap-metal guitar.” - Boston Globe “It’s smart, sharp rock, a signal from the nineties altered and amplified for now.” - Grayson Currin (INDY Week) “Through Live Skull, through Come, Zedek’s guitar always bore weight—you could feel the whole 20th century catastrophe bearing down on it. That weight is still there, as through a long instrumental introduction—enveloping, full of confidence, elegiac—you find yourself at a funeral for someone you’ve never met.” - Greil Marcus (Pitchfork) “Eve might just be her strongest yet, bold in its subtlety and intimacy, with Zedek’s writing bittersweet and observational, sourcing new joy from the deep well of sadness and resolve that is the blues.” - Uncut (9/10)

GENRE : ELECTRONIC / EXPERIMENTAL FILE UNDER: “R” Radian RELEASE DATE : November 11, 2016 NO EXPORT (JAPAN, S. AMERICA EXPORT OK) TRACK LISTING:

Vienna’s leading experimental outfit Radian is the trio of Martin Brandlmayr (drums, electronics), John Norman (bass), and Martin Siewert (guitars, electronics), who have been influenced by and shaped the city’s vivid scene of electronica in the early 2000s. Vienna is currently a wide open creative home to many new music composers and innovators. Today, the members of Radian are pillars of that community. On Dark Silent Off features guest performances by acclaimed saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, and marks the first Radian album since guitarist Martin Siewert joined. The album has been in the making since the early 2010s, with each piece being meticulously crafted and re-constructed over time. Debut track “Scary Objects” began its life as a live score to a Ben Russell film as part of his Trypps series, and features Radian’s signature blend of dynamic, percussive grooves with nontraditional instrument timbres. The title of the album, On Dark Silent Off, is a nod to Ad Reinhardt, whose art and theory has been influential on the trio. The juxtaposition of extremes (on/off) is present in Radian’s work: the contrast between light and darkness; and in musical terms, sound and silence and brightness/ darkness of timbre. Radian creates a field of tension between extreme dynamics, freely improvised parts and meticulous construction, an inherent contrast between soft sounds and sharp edits. Radian’s recording/creative process takes a central role in shaping the pieces. It is a two-fold process of creating material through improvisation, sound experiments and processing on the one hand, and a routine of carefully selecting and editing this material on the other. It is often the case that mere snippets are used out of hours of sound material. The contrast between the magic of the moment, spontaneous live performance and its subsequent careful construction shape the quality of the pieces. Radian likes to deal with sound that could be seen as byproducts of a musical process and incorporate them into its pieces — the sound of a cable entering the socket of a guitar, the sound of a switch, hums, sound of the fingers tapping on the string of a bass or the sound of the hand gliding between two chords of a guitar. These sounds are not deleted, or hidden, they are often transformed into central elements of the pieces. The track “Blue Noise Black Lake” was built around a sample Radian recorded of Mats Gustafsson playing the pads of his saxophone. Radian uses the method of “microscopic“ recording to zoom into sounds that would more typically be overlooked: the rattling of a marble on Brandlmayr’s crotale placed on a snare like in “Codes and Sounds,” the beauty and richness of cymbals, acoustic guitars played quietly and recorded closely. The album finds Radian playing more direct and more physical than they ever have. This might derive from the fact that that pieces like “Pickup Pickout”, “Rusty Machines”, and “Dusty Carpets” have been centerpieces of their recent live shows. On Dark Silent Off has a totally unique groove and is a remarkably individual musical statement.

After an incredible and unique cycle of 4 outstanding albums that have deeply marked the history of Doom Metal, MONOLITHE open a fascinating new chapter in their story with a surprising and phenomenal new offering. Surprising, because the absolute singularity of MONOLITHE's artistic genius is celebrated this time through an amazing Progressive Dark Metal approach. This fantastic project is perpetually evolving, and they have demonstrated once again an insatiable need to discover new sonic horizons. And phenomenal, because with this new album the band follow in the mystical footsteps of the great musical explorers of the '70s, showing a fabulous and exciting sense of composition. Even if their specific touch is immediately recognizable, the three monumental pieces developed here are powerfully affecting and channel the purity of deep emotions at the heart of the sound. "Epsilon Aurigae" is a massive maelstrom of powerfull riffs, memorable melodies, and sublime instrumental developments. On ”Zeta Reticuli" the band transposes the bold, exploratory approach of greats such as MAGMA or UNIVERS ZERO into the mystical universe of cosmic heavy music. "Zeta Reticuli" is a monster: a stellar explosion of sound and emotion powered by a massive groove and avalanches of overwhelming riffs. Simultaneously epic, grandiose, melodic and deadly heavy, "Zeta Reticuli" expands the definition of Doom Metal in a sublime refinement and reinvention of MONOLITHE’s history. Mesmerizing and fascinating from beginning to end, this brilliant new album is undoubtedly the magnum opus of this incredibly unique band. "The Reverses" is mind-crushing: artistically uncompromising, bone-shatteringly intense and devilishly heavy - a contorted monument to sinister devastation. The atmosphere distilled on this suffocating record is ignominious and truly eschatological. Layered malicious sounds lurk beneath a frenetic flow of creepy riffing; the perpetual echoes of nebulous voices are enmeshed within walls of guitar noise atop imposing drums furiously hammering home a destructive rhythmic march. As if that were not frightening enough, guesting leading names of the extreme scene - Jonas A Holmberg (THIS GIFT IS A CURSE), Alex Stjernfeldt (THE MOTH GATHERER) MkM (ANTAEUS, AOSOTH) and Vindsval (BLUT AUS NORD) provide a ghastly final touch. "The Reverses" is excessive, fascinating, burning and just...purely extreme! After "The Tunnels" (2011) and "The Purging" (2013) - two incredible, unreal albums internationally acclaimed for their amazingly strange singularity - TERRA TENEBROSA have pushed the boundaries of their thrilling approach to offer up a masterpiece, their finest work to date. "The Reverses" is a gloriously obscure compendium of chaotic styles, dark soundscapes and frantic elements, raised aloft to the Apocalypse. The definitive soundtrack to a dying world. Recommended if you like: SARGEIST, SATANIC WARMASTER, GORGOROTH (old), ENTHRONED (old), WATAIN (old). "Four years after Nightside Emanations and almost 20 years after their first demo, Behexen show no signs of repentance or fatigue, but instead a dedication to further perfecting their hellish black art." - No Clean Singing "Behexen is truly the embodiment of Finnish black metal’s two extremes, melding Sargeist and Beherit’s rabid, minimal hate with the dense, melodic gloom of Prevalent Resistance and Cosmic Church in a whirlwind of somber, catchy aggression. Four albums and nearly twenty years from their impetus, their newest album The Poisonous Path shows this quadripartite unit of blasphemous, mystical glory straying from signs of dilution shown by other longstanding outfits." - Invisible Oranges

IN THE WOODS… – Pure 2xLP VINYL EDITION NOW AVAILABLE Norway has always been the most fertile of lands for experimental and avant-garde Metal. During the last three decades fabulous visionaries have pushed beyond boundaries time and time again, propagating the ever-healthy Metal underground and its myriad sub-genres. The most prestigious and mythical of all are the legendary IN THE WOODS… the originators of truly progressive Dark Metal. Now, 21 years after their singular, beyond-classic debut "Heart Of The Ages" and 17 protracted years after last full-length "Strange In Stereo", a reimagined and revitalised IN THE WOODS… deliver "Pure" - a stunningly focussed new record – a distillation of everything that makes them one of the greats.

ARTIST : IN THE WOODS… TITLE : Pure ORIGIN : Norway

The prolonged absence has led to a propulsive reinvigoration, a renewed directness and melodic refinement, a set of addictive songs grounded in the same strain of epic, atmospheric and psychedelic blackened Prog-Doom the band mined for their 1997 masterpiece "Omnio" – although this record is anything but a re-tread of old terrain.

CAT# DMP0146 FORMAT : Gatefold 2x12" LP SPECIFICS : All copies pressed on black vinyl with 12"x12" insert and download card. GENRE : Progressive Dark Metal LIST PRICE : $35.99

As always with IN THE WOODS… the exploratory nature of the music stems from the freedom of 70's progressive rock: the dreaminess of vintage FLOYD and CAMEL, the skewed restlessness of prime CRIMSON, the perpetual questing of GABRIEL-era GENESIS and subtle Krautrock intimations.

Ashley Bellouin Ballads LP-DR-00023 Street Date: November 11, 2016 Format: LP (with download) List Price: $19.99

Ballads – Bourden | Hummen

Ashley Bellouin’s work explores the merging of sound art, electro-acoustic composition, and instrument building. She focuses on the studies of sonology, psychoacoustics, and the interaction between sound and architecture. Her compositions emphasize and exploit the sonic potential contained within a single musical gesture, regularly using electronics to develop latent qualities. Spatialization, beat frequencies, auditory illusions, and microtonal tunings are frequent compositional tools. Bellouin holds an MFA in Electronic Music & Recording Media from Mills College, from where her accolades include the Frog Peak Collective Experimental Music Award for most outstanding thesis. Since 2012 Bellouin has collaborated with musician Ben Bracken on both musical compositions and instrument building. Their piece “After Image” is included in the double LP/DVD compilation Gravity Spells: Bay Area New Music and Expanded Cinema Art, released in 2014 by Bimodal Press. Other current and past collaborators include musician Sarah Davachi, filmmakers Paul Clipson and Kerry Laitala, and visual artists Rick Bahto, Chris Duncan, and Chris Fraser. Professionally, Bellouin has worked for synth pioneers, the late Don Buchla, as his assistant in research and development, and Dave Smith, as a technician at Dave Smith Instruments. She currently serves as Visiting Faculty at the San Francisco Art Institute and resides in Oakland, CA. Potent music will always free the body to move into some great state of harmony (physical, mystical, or dreamlike variant). These fantastic crossings provide the human experience natural intoxicants to feel a wonderful freedom that is often unfounded otherwise. Some might even propose that this is music’s sole and noble purpose. Composed or not, the music of Ashley Bellouin is a most pleasing blessing to this new century’s blueprint for perfect harmonization, and its splendor is a must hear for true experience. With her debut album, Ballads, Bellouin presents the listener with two sidelong tracks, “Bourdon” and “Hummen” that slowly evolve over their respective journeys. Both pieces focus on the acoustic and psychoacoustic phenomena that arise from microtonal tuning variations, and they invite the audience to enter into a heightened state of listening where small details become the primary focus. Each track unfolds into an intricate auditory journey, suggesting subtle alterations to the perception of linear time. As the pieces progress, select tones emerge and transform the sound by revealing hidden overtones. The negative spaces between closely paired pitches alter and create complex tonal structures and shifting rhythmic patterns. Bellouin composed, performed, recorded, and mixed the album between the period of 2012-2015, with Ben Bracken and Teddy Rankin-Parker joining on electric guitar and cello, respectively. “Hummen” features Bellouin’s hand-built glass armonica, custom electronics, harmonium, electric guitar, and aluminum rods. “Bourdon” features the Sequential Prophet 6 (which Bellouin was involved in making while working at Dave Smith Instruments), custom electronics, harmonium, cello, and electric guitar.

FORMAT DETAILS:

LP + ART BOOK: KNV004. EAN: 5055300385963. 5mm SPINE. BOX COUNT: 10. SRP $31.99.

INFORMATION:

Deluxe LP with art book housed in the record's packaging. The book includes an essay based on the concepts behind the LP, by New York based writer Deforrest Brown Jr. (NPR, Tiny Mix Tapes). The sleeve and book are designed and illustrated by cult design studio Maximage, who have won numerous awards and residencies based on their exploration of colour, typography and psychedelic forms of publication design. Brought up in Vilnius, Lithuania, Gediminas Žygus was first attracted to making electronic music by easy access to pirated software and the comfort of solitary creation. “Music to me was a reaction to the social environment - creating a voice, a reaction to being overwhelmed and not being able to change anything.” Currently his focus and music are driven by the influence and abstractions of theory, thinking about the way global politics shapes the earth’s ecosystem and the architectures and infrastructures of power.

A: Technocracy From Infinity To Here Wetware Transfiguration I: Enlightenment Dust Transfiguration II: Amplification B: Preacher Globalalia Irreversible. Black Atlantic. Immersion Into Noise New World Order Eruption Of The Amorphous Realer Than Real

‘Ecologies II’ was made in a year that amplified the anxieties on the pages he’s been reading, where theory meets the real head-on. The album was made mainly in Lithuania while living in an apartment which had “a detailed panorama of Vilnius where you could analyse the city as a complex ecosystem”, which is also a good way of understanding the flow of the album too; the music on ‘Ecologies II’ is dense, flowing with ideas and sonic undercurrents, made for deep listening. It was also made in response to travelling the megalopolises of South East Asia which helped bring a new awareness of the world system, climates and the thick matrix of social and political order. The album itself is an assemblage of field recordings that are manipulated and fused with digital programming, melody and design to startling effect, resonating with power. The album is like a supple, accelerated take on musique concrète and its techniques, subsumed into the digital realm, to the point where it’s hard at times to work out where the digital and the real start and end, but at others, the contrast is violent and raw. There’s drama and melody in the music; there’s implied narrative. The album is of course indebted to some of the familiar tropes of club music but only in the sense that its forms are a starting point. The familiar use of melodies and the driving energy are forced to breaking point and intensified, escaping easy categorisation or perfunctory uses. But that’s not all. Tracks such as the melodic ‘Dust’ stop and start with trapped sampled voices underpinning the lush strings, ‘Preacher’ throws the pleading of a minister into a tense mesh of flickering voice and pumping heartbeat-like kick drum. Other parts are more or less ambient, such as ‘Irreversible. Black Atlantic.’ where underwater recordings exhibit creaking depth, against a swelling horn part. Other tracks seem to be ecosystems of their own. It’s a complex album rewarding repeated listening.

Moreno’s record is to some extent the most conventional of the three, even though Domenico, the drummer, plays drums on a sampler and cymbal sounds using sand paper. The next release, Domenico’s, had the greatest success in the indie world, while Kassin’s album is the most produced (which makes sense as he has become one of the most successful producers in Brazil).

Moreno, Kassin and Domenico were childhood friends from school. They formed a band and made three albums, each one under a different one’s name. Their records are different and very influential in Brazil.

MORENO

Morneo is the son of legendary Brazilian musician Caetano Veloso. You can hear him at age 8 on the first Luaka Bop release (“Beleza Tropical”) singing the words “Ilê Ayê” on Caetano’s song of the same name.

Press Quotes:

"Call me a sucker for nostalgia, but I've lost hours in this labyrinth of a project, which Deru describes as both a modern day timecapsule and an example on how musicians can extend their storytelling processes in the digital age. I've been listening to the album on repeat every night as I drifted into dreams of my own past, prompting me to speak with Deru about 1979 and its accompanying online universe.” - Zach Sokol, The Creator’s Project "In a time where the devaluation of music seems to be at it’s peak, fans and audiences expect every release to be either for free or donation based, which forces musicians to tour extensively or resort to day jobs in order to support themselves. Deru, an electronic artist who questions this establishment, explores an innovative release of his latest album, 1979. His approach influences listeners to place themselves in an appropriate listening environment, delivering an entirely new experience." - ISO50

LP

Forth Wanderers are five friends from Montclair, New Jersey. Together they make some of the most powerfully intimate and emotive indie rock you’re likely to hear. Comprised of singer Ava Trilling, guitarists Ben Guterl and Duke Greene, bassist Noah Schifrin and drummer Zach Lorelli, despite all being under the age of 21, the group have been prolifically forging musical creations from the bedrooms of their Garden State township since 2013. Such is the perfect narrative that preempted the band’s debut EP Mahogany, as the songwriting partnership was completed by Ben’s three best classroom friends, followed swiftly by long player Tough Love in 2014. With their burgeoning discography it’s hard to believe that Ava only just graduated high school this June, and the rest of the band are in their junior college year. But it’s fair to say that with their Slop EP the band are truly arriving on the international scene. Over just four tracks the band manage to create an intense impact with the effortless, earnest melody of Ava’s talismanic vocals soaring above the untempered churns of Ben’s haunting, raw guitars.

STREET DATE: November 11, 2016 “Pink Floyd’s Meddle and Brian Eno’s Another Green World are some of the signposts that could lead here. Yet one of the reasons we are still interested after all these years is that a Kilbey/Kennedy record, sounds just like that rather than anyone else.” - Brisbane Courier Mail “Fans of The Cure, Interpol and The Church will want to make sure to get a listen of the latest stellar release from Steve Kilbey & Martin Kennedy. On the duo’s fourth studio collaboration the propulsive “Amenia,” the dreamy “This Merciful Blur,” ethereal “Shegaze” and intoxicating “Swansea” are among the wonderful tracks that celebrate their magic.” - musicnewsnashville.com “Sumptuous meeting of Australian soundscaper and the head Churchman.” - MOJO (4 STARS) “Slips psychedelically back into the dark ocean from which it came, ready to lap the shore again at next listen.” – playback:stl

Steve Kilbey (The Church) and Martin Kennedy’s (All India Radio) fourth album Inside We Are The Same takes them to new and unexpected places. From the Pink Floyd-eque children’s choir in This is the Universe to the space rock of Oh My Glad and the psychedelic tinged new wave of Amenia, the album melds Kilbey’s “imaginative lyrical lexicon” (MOJO 4 stars) with Kennedy’s “lush melodies” (TheBigTakeover). The collaboration brings together Steve Kilbey and The Church’s luxurious dreamy psychedelia with the lush melodies and electronic soundscapes of Kennedy’s All India Radio. Separately and together, Kilbey and Kennedy’s music has appeared in movies and TV shows including Donnie Darko, One Tree Hill, CSI, Bondi Rescue, The Rare Earth and many more.

Brad Laner Micro-Awakenings 2xLP-DR-00022 Street Date: November 11, 2016 Format: 2xLP (with download) List Price: $24.99

Mirco-Awakenings – Section 1 | Section 2 | Section 3 | Section 4 | Brad Laner is an American musician and record producer best known for his work with the shoegaze band Medicine, which he founded and leads. Prior to Medicine, Laner was involved in avant-improv bands such as Debt of Nature, Steaming Coils, which included members of Los Angeles Free Music Society, Amnesia, and most notably the experimental tribal post-punk outfit Savage Republic. He publicly began his extraordinary story in 7th grade playing bass in an all kid band on television with The Captain and Tennille (yes, you read correctly). Additionally, Laner is an active solo artist, recording under the moniker Electric Company as well as releasing three albums under his own name. Nearest Suns (co-released by Drawing Room) is his most recent. Artists such as Brian Eno and Caribou sample his work. His numerous and varied collaborations include projects with Lindsay Buckingham, M83, John Wiese, and members of Failure and Tool. At this point, writing that Brad Laner is a master of pop experimentation is just a lazy understatement. His musical works and breadth of sounds consistently push forward the boundaries and definitions of what can be contained in comfortable song formats, and it is this wonderfully successful challenge that is Laner’s greatest asset. His structures allow the listener to move through the realms of song craft with a harmonious sense of enlightenment. His sounds pleasure the cerebral realms that euphorically resonate the whole self. With other releases, Laner has only been able to highlight or approximate this design to listeners. Destiny had other plans in mind for full sound construction. As such, if timing is so crucial for experience, the vinyl release of Micro-Awakenings is the complete revelation.

SALES POINTS -First vinyl issue release of album recorded over a six-year period from 2003-2009 -An absolutely required instrumental album of noisy experimental pop from Laner’s incredibly wonderful discography that demonstrates his keen sense of modern composition that is both fresh and reflective. Attaining higher levels of consciousness through the time travels of sound has never been so beautiful. -Each 2xLP is pressed on 180-gram vinyl housed in a full-color wide-spine gloss jacket (with download) and includes a full color 22x22” foldout poster insert. The talented Dani Tull provided all artwork. Laner is one of the few guitar heroes “…who has fully embraced and adapted to the new technologies and techniques of the modern digital era…” – Miles Raymer, Pitchfork

Laner’s studio trickery “… leaves the listener guffawed and breathless.” - J. Hubner, Backseat Mafia “You'd have to be awfully jaded not to drop your jaw.” – Nitsuh Abebe, Pitchfork

Arranged in four sidelong suites, Micro-Awakenings is an absolutely essential instrumental album of experimental pop. It is a record that purely demonstrates Laner’s astute sense of modern composition and sound exploration that is both fresh and reflective. Recorded over a sixyear period from 2003-2009 in the valleys of Los Angeles, MicroAwakenings is a full testament to Laner’s love of unraveling pop music into new electric assemblies that command a listener’s total focus. Attaining higher levels of consciousness through the time travels of sound has never been so beautiful.

“One of the weirder movers of the LA Scene.” – Byron Coley, The Wire

Drawing Room is excited to present the vinyl release of MicroAwakenings. Each 2xLP is pressed on 180-gram vinyl housed in a full color wide-span gloss jacket (with download) and includes a 22x22” foldout poster with all artwork provided by the highly talented Dani Tull.

The definition of a rebel is someone who goes against the grain. For close to thirty years now, Blue Rodeo has taken the road less traveled - and succeeded far beyond anyone’s expectations. The band emerged in the early 80’s as a countrified rock band in the era of hair metal and glossy pop. Despite sticking out like a sore thumb (or maybe because of it), their single “Try” became omni-present on radio across Canada and set in motion a three decade long career of headlining every club, theatre and arena in Canada. In 1993, when grunge rock was squeezing commercial rock off the radio, they recorded their most acoustic album, Five Days In July, and scored their biggest hit selling over a half million copies of that one record alone. And now, in the digital age, Blue Rodeo has recorded 1000 Arms, an intimate album designed to be enjoyed on vinyl. Fourteen albums on, the rebels live. ......... ............................................................. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . HIGHLIGHTS
