Artist: Flying Lotus Title: Cosmogramma 05.04.10
Overview When global bass music matriarch Mary Anne Hobbs recently told The Fader “Flying Lotus, for me, is like the Hendrix of his generation” it seemed more than an audacious opinion, and with the arrival of Cosmogramma, it's revealed as a revelation. In the past couple of years since his debut album, Los Angeles, Flying Lotus has grown into the position of being far more than a producer, he has helped materialize a far-reaching strain of musical ideology that has encompassed not only a global family of like-minded artists, but also a nearly infinite palate of planetary (and interplanetary) sonics.
WARPCD195/WARPLP195
“It would have been so easy to just make a dubstep album,” says Ellison, a nod to the scene that has lionized him as one of its progressive champions since 2008's Los Angeles. Instead, he created a far-reaching kaleidoscope of sonic emotion, which Ellison calls “my most honest work, just true to what I wanted to say.” Not to say that dubstep headz won’t find themselves drooling all over it; just that it goes much deeper than that. No longer simply an outgrowth of Ellison’s machines, the music here is also the product of live instrumentalists from the worlds that Cosmogramma engages. There’s the constant bass presence of “Thundercat”, a cornerstone of Sa-Ra Creative; there’s Rebekah Raff’s harp connecting the dots between the music of Harry Partch and Ghostface Killah (both of which she’s performed); there’s an appearance by the tenor sax of Steven’s cousin and jazz royalty, Ravi Coltrane, and by the voice of one Thom Yorke, an Oxford bloke taking respite from singing in the most influential rock band of the 21st century. Ellison’s heritage forecast how different approaches to creativity could form a singular whole. His grandmother, Marilyn Mcleod, wrote and produced popular songs for Motown (most famously, Diana Ross’ disco smash “Love Hangover”); while his aunt, the harpist/pianist Alice Coltrane (wife of saxophone colossus, John Coltrane), created legendary compositions that remain bedrocks of the jazz avant-garde, not to mention crucial fusions of Eastern and Western tonalities, incorporating spiritual themes into modern music. Many artists strive for something grand and vast, but 26 year-old Steven Ellison actually brought it forth from his head and heart. To not dress it in the garb of the special does it a great disservice.

GENRE : POP FILE UNDER: “F” Future Islands Release Date: May 4, 2010 Comprised of J. Gerrit Welmers (synthesizers and programming), William Cashion (bass), and Samuel T. Herring (vocals), Future Islands has continued to make passionate music through an electronic medium for the past four years. [Although, the three have been working and performing since the spring of 2003.] They call their music “Post-Wave,” taking in part from the emotional fragility of New Wave and coupling it with the power and drive of Post-Punk. Their music is spearheaded by Welmers, whose layers of synths and drums create the landscape for Cashion’s punching-strum style, that pulses and fights--the two--creating noise and bliss. Herring, who has been called “one of the most magnetic frontmen in indie rock,” finds his space in between. Carving through the music, at times, with a whispering croon, and at others, with a deathly wail. In Evening Air marks the first full-length release from Future Islands since moving to Baltimore, and also their first full-length release as a focused three piece. However, there’s no lack of spirit in this paring down. More so, there’s a greater intensity and eye to detail than we have yet witnessed from the group. These changes are felt and heard. In Evening Air takes us and swirls us around those feelings of growing outside of one’s city and one’s self. It moves through gripping loss and the search for peace from a heavy head, with an ease and understanding where there was none. With production by Chester Endersby Gwazda, Future Islands fuses together their poetry with a dynamic musical range. Traveling from the slow burn to the highly ecstatic while holding on to the quill and not letting go. These songs are answers. They are born from fire and pain, yet are filled with light, acting as breathless testaments to love and it’s consequences. But this isn’t just a group of songs. This is a book of stories. From darkly quiescent and imaginative tales, to the passionate burnings of a searching heart. From the fear of being misunderstood and coming to terms with the loss of love. Future Islands speaks a language of forever and always, with an honesty that falls but never touches the ground. Also Available from Future Islands : In The Fall 12”EP (Thrill 12.41)

Lazer Crystal MCMLXXX Thrill - 241
LAZER CRYSTAL is a musical node comprised of three humans and various mechanisms. They are from the city of Chicago, Illinois and have thus far released two limited selections on the collectors imprint HBSP-2X. The first 12” single Hot Pink BMX was printed in an edition of 300 copies and spray painted by hand, some with custom textile covers. The following 12” release EP1 was even more unique. Lazer Crystal asked several artists to contribute artwork for another 300 copy limited release. The results were that approximately 50 people contributed designs and every single record ended up with a unique jacket. These were displayed “gallery style” for a special release on Record Store Day. The members of Lazer Crystal are Nicholas Read (electronics & vocals), Josh Johannpeter (percussion), & Mikale De Graff (vocals & electronics). MCMLXXX is their first full-length. IN SHORT: Lazer Crystal believes that we as humans are at the extreme promontory of the centuries. The human race has reached the moment where we must open the mysterious shutters of the impossible to seek the unknown. We are moving beyond Time and Space toward the absolute, since we have discovered eternal, omnipresent speed.

booka shade more! “The album is called More! More refined production, more multi-layered atmospheres, more emotion,” explains Arno Kammermeier, one half of BOOKA SHADE. “We wanted this album to be more energetic with strong grooves and of course the typical BOOKA SHADE melodies and atmospheres that we love. The album takes you through every stage of the night out; the excitement before you go out, the party, the late, late night, a bit of paranoia...and then the sunny morning of a new day.” Across the album, Arno and partner Walter Merziger delve deeper than ever before, delivering what has to be their most dynamic and accomplished album to date, which is saying something for BeatPort’s 2009 Music Awards Winner for “Best Tech House Artist.” For the first time on any of their albums, they’ve collaborated with guest vocalists, sharing the limelight with electronic pioneers Yello on the song “Divine” and Get Physical favorite Chelonis R. Jones, electropop’s first cosmosexual antihero on the album’s first single “Bad Love.”

The name: Baby Ouh!. The look: “hysterical glamour”. The sound: playful, experimental. The Lyrics: RʼnʼRʼ: Romantic and Rebellious. Stereo Total recorded a total of 40 songs for this album. So as not to strain your nerves too far, only 17 will appear on the album. Also included are a few cover versions of Stereo Totalʼs idols (e.g. Brigitte Fontaine from France and Pedro Almodóvar from Spain). Additionally, many guest musicians contributed. However, this is no vehicle for dropping famous names from radio and television, rather they are friends of the band – real Superstars in the Warholian sense: Gina dʼOrio (Cobra Killer), Vice Cooler (Hawnay Troof), Miss le Bomb, Becky Ofek (Boy from Brazil), Can “Khan“ Oral, Anton (Die Dreipunktbande), Albrecht Kühner (Das Barock‐ Orchester), Irma and Lou Schiller (“Der Kinderchor”/ ”The Childrens Choir”) – their mother gave them permission – and still more star guests. Lyrics that are anarchistic, lewd, poetic in an overwrought way, sometimes very sad and sometimes very silly; accompanied by music that is played with flea market instruments, recorded on to cassettes, and with its LoFi attitude, generally regards the penultimate technical developments as the best. Stereo Total, who for nearly the last 10 years have been constantly touring around the world – with tours in Japan, Australia, North and South American and Europe – have always tried to solve musical, technical and marketing problems with ideas rather than with major label money and recording studio technique. They bring out their records on several independent labels worldwide, in different languages, are perceived and classified in almost every country differently, and travel with a minimum of rock band equipment, no matter if they are playing in rock clubs or at 3am at a rave. During the years in which a “Live act” could be understood as a Karaoke show with a laptop and a microphone, the sight of the duo Stereo Total with drums, guitars and a mini‐sampler was fairly unusual. Their live concept is very direct and simple: 1, 2, 3, 4 and letʼs go. The result is very excessive and wild shows that have a lot to do with Françoise Cactusʼ RockʼnʼRoll background with The Lolitas.

"It used to be that Moby was the artist people thought of when the words innovative and hip were applied to a musician who had sprung from the corridors of SUNY Purchase. But Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt! - a revolving band of musical party-throwers signed to David Byrne’s Luaka Bop record label - are racking up a string of much-hyped shows around Manhattan and Brooklyn." -NY Times “It’s nearly impossible to stand on the sidelines of a Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt! Show. Well it’s possible, but you’d be missing the very reason people come: to be part of the sweaty disco pileup.” -New York Mag: “The Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt! have caused a stir closer to home with their high-energy gigs and ridiculous costuming” -Pitchfork "...everything worthy of a band known for memorable performance-art- led, costume-fuelled, all-singing-all-dancing extravaganzas" -Vice

The Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt is a never ending romp of a dance party; looped pianos and saxes race on top of crappy synths and ill beats, and like twenty vocal takes (like seriously rivaling Broken Social Scene status) are mixed in there somewhere. These are severely catchy, dancey pop songs that actually have lyrical content. These are songs about friends, romance and everything else that rules in life, presented in a comic, yet somehow deathly serious, way. Live, TPDR becomes a whole new beast altogether. Neil is relentless, running through crowds, scaling things, doing acrobatics, all this while wearing a giant Ultimate Protection Suit, that is, 100 stuffed animals sewn to a jumpsuit, turning him into some kind of childhood head of the bed gone wrong. His instrument: lights. While singing and dancing, Neil's hard at work orchestrating an elaborate light show. Old lamps, giant inflatable storks and cats turn on and off. Strobes, disco balls and every other kitschy flashing item any college student has ever had in their dorm: think Daft Punk with a $16 budget. Meanwhile, the Grrrrl Police, an elite force of enthusiastic singers and dancers parade around dressed as giant pizzas, Christmas trees and every other thing that might make humans feel warm. The Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt! create something rare and spectacular: a genuinely fun concert. There is no such thing as not singing, there is no such thing as not dancing-those things exist in a world where there is such a thing as "cool" and "not cool." This is the Terror Pigeon's world: there is only "awesome."

THE AUSTERITY PROGRAM BACKSLIDERS AND APOSTATES WILL BURN Three years after they released their debut full length, The Austerity Program are back with not even twenty minutes of music – a four song EP. You are not us, their label, and so you have no idea how much this absolutely infuriates us. We have probably been on the phone with these guys averaging at least once a week over that time. “Guys, guys, we have invested a LOT of money in you, when are you going to come out with something?” And they fucking promised us like a triple LP or something. And then, three goddam years later, we get this. That’s like, just over a song a year. And not a 45 minute, seven part epic song. These things are barely five minutes each. You could probably learn to play them over a long afternoon. What the hell did we do? We run a record label – it’s not like we’re dumping toxic waste in playgrounds or laying off thousands of people who work in our factory or anything. This is small potatoes. So why the hell are we punished like this? And of course – of course – we’re suddenly expected to drop everything because now they’ve got a record release show lined up and “it’s very important that we have all formats available the night of the show.” It’s like, I … I really don’t even know what to type I’m so angry about this. I just had to walk away from the computer and get a glass of water to calm down. This is ridiculous.

What does it sound like? You tell us, man. We haven’t even cracked open the reference copies because what’s the point? Any schedule we made about this thing died literally years ago. If it’s anything like their last record (and they claim that it is, but “so much better” – whatever, guys) it’ll have a drum machine and some guitars and bass and that one guy will be singing and can I just tell you how pissed I am that I am even stuck writing this thing? Promo materials for something that the band swore up and down was going to be huge and on time. I just want to get a red marker and write “D - , SEE ME” all over the CD copy they sent us and just mail it back to them. No, even better, I want to FED EX it back to them just to make it totally obvious how screwed up they are. Four songs. Just … it’s just astonishing that they really think this is their next record. So, yeah, The Austerity Program finally took some of their precious time and now expect us to put their EP out. Screw this – I’m going to go work on reviewing the layout for the next Torche record or something. “CHOICE” PRESS QUOTES ___________________________________________________ "...one skull-crushing riff after another, reinforced by beats so mosh-worthy you'll want to buy their drum machine a beer... TRACKLIST
The Whitsundays are the weird and wonderful musical brainchild of Edmonton, Alberta's Paul Arnusch. The world first heard from them when their compact, catchy pop jewel of a first album came out in 2008, but in the meantime Arnusch's vision has grown and mutated tremendously. This time around his sophomore album Saul, which Arnusch recorded in his own basement over the course of a snowy Canadian winter, is much different. Saul is a pop opus suitable for the rainiest days or the most star-filled nights, a resplendent collection of vintage psychedelia and jangly pop, yet also something much darker and stranger than anything the Whitsundays have done before.

The Whitsundays’ epoynmous debut album, released on Friendly Fire Recordings in early 2008, caught the ear of a lot of people - including Rolling Stone, who called them "the next big Canadian indie supergroup." Fueled by the generous accolades they were receiving and a hefty dollop of willpower, Arnusch (who also plays in dream-pop luminaries Faunts) spent a successful year touring and playing festivals, including VirginFest Calgary, CMJ and Sled Island. For Saul, Arnusch hibernated in his basement, not only taking on the role as writer, performer and producer, but this time isolating himself one step deeper and engineering the album as well. The result is an album that is every bit as catchy as the Whitsundays' first album, but at the same time more personal and revealing - these are still melodic pop songs, but there's something deeper lurking within. Saul is an emotional dawn-to-dusk carnival of sounds and songs, still holding on to the 60s-hearkening pop

sensibilities that defined the debut album. This time around, however, Arnusch has let go of the rollercoaster’s handles and thrown his arms in the air, abandoning the strict song structures of the Whitsundays' debut album for a more visceral and expansive sound. Arnusch manages to combine the harmonic textural elements of the Byrds, in songs like “I Can't Get Off of my Cloud", with the sincerity and distress of Galaxie 500, on “Oh Madeline”. He adds a smashing psychedelic pop hit chorus into "You Fell for It", and then in later tracks references both the strange alien wit of heroic David Bowie and the carefully sculpted noisy reverb of Ariel Pink. Despite these subtle nods, The Whitsundays rule over a kingdom that’s all their own, a place of half-remembered shadows and fresh blood. It’s music that removes the listener from the siege mentality of this decaying world. Arnusch is not without help - his supporting band, which contains members of another critically-acclaimed Edmonton group called Shout Out Out Out Out, consists of Lyle Bell, Nickelas Johnson, Aaron Parker, and Aiden Lucas-Buckland. The rest of this merry band make appearances throughout the album, which helps flesh Saul out even further. Despite the new direction in tempo and texture that the Whitsundays have taken with Saul, there’s a common mood, an ethereal feeling that bonds these songs together. To the casual listener, it may just be another catchy pop record, and indeed the songs here are superlatively catchy. But take heed: there's something else at work here: inside these pop songs is something strange, waiting to rise to the surface.

Poirier is a DJ/Producer from Montreal, Canada. ‘Running High’ includes 27 tracks spanning two CDs. Rhythms have been run, Soca systems have been sounded (not to mention air-horns), ceiling’s have been brought down, and now it’s time for the man called Poirier (Pwa-ri-ay) to rewind and come again (selector that he is...)... A twelve month period has seen the release of three EP’s, all showcasing very different (yet at the same time very coherent) sides of Poirier’s production...from digi-dancehall bangers, to hyper Soca rhythms, and techno/Caribbean hybrids. That same time frame has also seen Poirier reaching to all parts of the globe to drop his signature ìall things bassî sound on ever increasing crowds. Whether as a solo DJ or with one of his various M.C’s by his side, he’s murdered it in pretty much any place you can pronounce on a map, and along the way has cemented his status as one of the top names in an ever growing group of producers rocking dancefloors with a globally curated pastiche of sounds. Now it’s time to drop the culmination of those last twelve months into his 7th full length (2nd for Ninja Tune)... the two disc ìRunning Highî album.
