New Band. New Album. Same Genius.
Dave Holland Octet Pathways Featuring: Chris Potter (tenor, soprano); Robin Eubanks (trombone); Steve Nelson (vibes, marimba); Nate Smith (drums); Antonio Hart (alto); Alex Sipiagin (trumpet); and Gary Smulyan (baritone). Recorded live at Birdland, January 7-11 2009.
Street Date: 3/23/10
A Dave Holland bass line compels attention. A master of tone and rhythm, the bass-
ist, composer, and bandleader is now in his fifth decade as a performer. His path has led him from the frontiers of free improvisation to modern ensembles that fully embody Sam Rivers’ philosophy of “playing all of it.” The Wolverhampton, England, native got his big break from Miles Davis, with whom he played during the trumpet legend’s epochal Bitches Brew period. Holland became a prominent voice during the 1970s and, over the course of his career, worked with artists including Anthony Braxton, Betty Carter, Chick Corea, Jack DeJohnette, Bill Frisell, Stan Getz, Herbie Hancock, Roy Haynes, Joe Henderson, Pat Metheny, Thelonious Monk, Cassandra Wilson, and Kenny Wheeler. Holland made his deepest and most personal imprints on jazz music via his recent ensembles, most notably the Dave Holland Quintet and the Dave Holland Big Band. These two groups were responsible for such era-defining albums as Not for Nothing, Extended Play: Live at Birdland, What Goes Around, and Overtime. When Dave Holland forms a new group, people listen. The band or album may be new, but it’s always the same genius. Pathways marks the recording debut of the Dave Holland Octet and the fourth album to be released on Holland’s own Dare2 label. The players should be familiar to Holland fans: Chris Potter (tenor, soprano), Robin Eubanks (trombone), Steve Nelson (vibes, marimba), and Nate Smith (drums). Added to the front-line are other Holland collaborators Antonio Hart (alto), Alex Sipiagin (trumpet), and Gary Smulyan (baritone) giving the band an even bigger sound. Holland returned to New York’s Birdland to record Pathways – capturing this incredible group of improvisers in full flight.

Artist: Autechre Title: Oversteps 03.23.10
Overview
WARPCD210/WARPLP210
There are few artists operating in contemporary music whose work could be accurately described as ‘pioneering’. Though they’d doubtless balk at the term, Sheffield-via-Manchester's Sean Booth and Rob Brown probably have more claim on the label than most. For theirs is music that, on first listen at least, appears to be without influence, a rich hermetic sound world that is a law unto itself, adhering only to the constraints of its own internal logic. Autechre will see the release of their 10th studio album, "Oversteps" this March 23rd. One of the most distinctive and revered electronic groups of all time, they've previously been commissioned to remix the likes of Stereolab, Tortoise and Surgeon, and have notably been feted by Thom Yorke, with the Radiohead frontman stating on his official website that their 2001 album "Confield" "made my head spin", and citing Booth and Brown's work as an influence on his own Kid A and Amnesiac (of course Autechre themselves admit indifference to this). Their latest work, still very much an Autechre record, shows an oft-overlooked playfulness and a rarely mentioned musicality that comes to the fore-front, in what could be described as their most accessible work to date. Between the layers of cold digital pings and fuzzed out tones, there are true chord changes and warm soundscapes being built from the ground up. As freelance writer David Abravanel (New York Magazine, Big Shot, Pop Matters..etc.) put it, Autechre's previous release, Quarterstice was "the cool In A Silent Way to the more aggressively beautiful Bitches Brew of Oversteps. There are tracks here with the kind of ambient techno melodies that have scarce been present on an Autechre album since 1995's Tri Repetae. Where part of the thrill of Quaristice was the unmistakable sound of the duo wrestling with where to fit all the pieces, Oversteps beams with confidence; everything is fleshed out here."

“...captures the raw, contagious energy that has long characterized their live shows”-Fred Mills (Blurt)
18 years and 8 previous Bettie Serveert albums (including their 1998 limited edition set of Velvet Underground covers, Venus In Furs) have passed since Bettie Serveert first formed in Amsterdam, yet they continue to evolve.
• TRACKLISTING CD: Deny All / Semaphore /
After a false start in 1986 when they dissolved after only one gig, Bettie Serveert formed in 1990 and quickly caught the ear of Matador, Brinkman and 4AD’s Guernica label for whom they kindly agreed to record their first album Palomine. Carol van Dyk’s seductive voice, Peter Visser’s emotional guitar playing and the band’s bittersweet melodies and a cool cover of Sebadoh’s Healthy Sick made for an impressive debut, which endeared them immediately to the press.
• MARKETING: Retail Co-Op Budget avail-
With its mournful, desolate feel, and Carol’s typically striking lyrics, Bettie Serveert had served an ace. A full year later in January 1995 the band recorded their second album Lamprey, which was hailed by Melody Maker as the most tangled, desolate, real life guitar sound of the year. After extensive touring with the likes of Belly, Dinosaur Jr, Buffalo Tom, Superchunk, Come and Jeff Buckley, the band soon climbed to the top of the indie underground with their unique and unmistakable heavy sweet guitar sound. Pharmacy of Love is undoubtedly the band’s best album since their debut “Palomine” and arugably their most aggressive effort to date. As Blurt’s Fred Mills stated “it captures the raw, contagious energy that has long characterized their live shows.. this kicks ass!”

Simon Green aka Bonobo returns with his forth and finest album to date. Losing none of his epic emotionalism, his control of texture and colour and his subtlety, Green has also made some of his most contemporary-sounding music. The beats may sound a little harder and more digital, but this is a producer at the height of his powers, who can shape any sound or style into his own aesthetic. Featuring collaborations with Andreya Triana, the Mercury-nominated Portico Quartet, Catherine de Boer (of Bellaruche) and TM Juke, this is perhaps the definitive set of music from an artist very much on the up. GENRE : POP FILE UNDER: “H” High Places
High Places vs. Mankind is the second full-length album from Mary Release Date: March 23, 2010 Pearson and Rob Barber. Formed as a Brooklyn duo in 2006, High Places have since relocated to Los Angeles, whose warmer temps NO EXPORT TRACK LISTING: and mountain vistas better fit the warmth of High Places’ music and personalities. But relocation was but a small part of what’s been a 1. The Longest Shadows dynamic few years for the two. 2. On Giving Up High Places’ 2007 self-titled debut 7” grabbed the immediate attention of the music-blogosphere (including “Best New” honors from you know who) and anticipation built with subsequent single releases, compilation tracks and touring in the US and Europe with No Age, Abe Vigoda, Dan Deacon and Yeasayer. By popular demand, Thrill Jockey released the 03/07 - 09/07 CD in 2008 collecting those single and compilation tracks, and FADER called High Places “One of the most steadfastly interesting bands to emerge over the past year.” When High Places self-titled debut full-length came later in 2008, it was named one of the year’s best albums by Pitchfork, Stereogum, NME and The Village Voice. “Despite the duo’s ambitious blending of genres, the colorful, charismatic High Places remains unique and focused, naturally absorbing a rich array of influences and ultimately thriving on the impulses behind them.” - Pitchfork’s Best Albums of 2008 High Places began as an experiment in collaboration, based on a DIY compositional style and a love of layers. The title of High Places vs. Mankind accurately suggests the album will take a slightly altered course from the “goodness as growth reflected in nature” motif of the band’s debut. A digital single released on Halloween entitled “I Was Born” demonstrated Rob and Mary using more standard instrumentation including guitars sounding like guitars, and the bassoon upon which Mary was classically trained. Her vocals are less effected and more present, but many aspects of the High Places sound and aesthetic remain intact. One hears dance rhythms, stereo effects, accessible melodies, dub influence, and as always, a love of layering and of combining the unexpected into something cohesive and new. The band will tour North America and Europe this spring in support of High Places vs. Mankind, and will also release a 12” soon after collecting digital single tracks and remixes.

Double Dagger Masks Thrill - 239
Double Dagger does not make “background music.” The Baltimore trio’s songs are meant to be experienced, rather than just listened to - either at one of their intense performances or with the volume turned up loud enough to feel it in your gut. Their performances have highlighted their hometown Baltimore Whartscape Festivals, upstaged the likes of The Jesus Lizard and Melt Banana, and left smoldering rubble around the US and in Europe on tours with Dan Deacon, Parts & Labor and The Deathset. 2009’s More LP captured that intensity on what their local City Paper called the year’s best local album. Double Dagger embodies the contradictions of the fair-yet-blighted city they call home—visceral, raw, cacophonously loud, yet with unexpected moments of clarity, humor, and revelation. Live, Double Dagger’s strippeddown musical line-up, consisting solely of bass, drums, and vocals, somehow manages to sound like a stage-full of musicians. Drummer Denny Bowen hammers the drums with such force that bassist Bruce Willen must employ four amps to match his volume. Singer Nolen Strals wades into, out of, and sometimes on top of the audience, channeling a dynamic energy that often has the three musicians dripping with sweat by the second song. Music reviewers have compared Double Dagger to (in alphabetical order) At The Drive In, Big Black, Cop Shoot Cop, Dead Kennedys, The Fall, Fucked Up, Happy Mondays, Henry Rollins, The Hold Steady, Led Zeppelin, Les Savy Fav, New Order, Nirvana, No Age, Rites of Spring, Shellac, Steve Reich, Unwound, The White Stripes and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, among others. While this description is generally apt, Double Dagger continues to push the boundaries of what some critics have dubbed agit punk, art rock, DIY, future shock, hardcore, In Utero-era noise, metallic funk, minimalist punk, post-grunge, post-hardcore, post-pop, postpunk, post-punk, post-rock, or underground music. Double Dagger’s new EP, Masks, continues in this vein, taking up where More left off. Masks presents a series of vignettes, ranging from acerbic to facetious to self-reflective, on the facades we build within our lives. Masks contains some of Double Dagger’s most catchy songs to date, yet characteristically the tone of the album encompasses the abrasive and sarcastic as well as the upbeat and closes with a surprisingly delicate instrumental. The EP was recorded by the band using a necessarily DIY setup, and like More, manages to capture the loudness and energy of Double Dagger’s explosive live performances.

Drink Up Buttercup Born and Thrown on a Hook NATIONAL release date: CD/lp: 03.09.2010 “Drink Up Buttercup brought a smile to every face I could see, and the bashing on that garbage can lid couldn’t obscure some genuinely pretty and expressive harmonies.” -The New York Times Drink Up Buttercup may hail from Philadelphia but the geography of their debut album Born &Thrown on A Hook is less easily located on a physical map. It’s an occasionally surreal mythology filled with tales of hopelessly flawed characters, star-crossed lovers, drunks, fairy tales & bad trips. It exists in a world touched upon previously by Tom Waits, Hans Christian Anderson and Lloyd Kaufman while musically it follows the direct lineage of classic songwriting: Bowie, The Beatles & The Beach Boys’ late 60s lysergia, early Roxy Music, Sabbath’s bass heavy pulse & the crescendos of Arcade Fire. First brought to the attention of music fans through their debut ‘Sosey & Dosey’ 7” on Brooklyn’s Kanine Records (Grizzly Bear, Chairlift), the Philly group stormed CMJ and SXSW and earned early praise. Described as, “Beatle-esque but in a kitchen sink kind of way,” (Brooklyn Vegan) and “60’s psychedelic carnival” (Stereogum) the band’s nuanced yet bombastic live show is a vital part of its growing legend, with the New York Times saying that DUB, “mesmerizes and clobbers live.” Retail: The 7” single for “Even Think” was released commercially early last fall and this album release will build upon the interest that has been building for the band through national touring and the glowing reviews from the blogs. Music has been serviced early so people have a chance to listen and get into the album. We will approach independent retail and secure top visibility and listening posts at stores in appropriate markets. In-store play copies and posters are available: contact your sales rep or mike@yeproc.com. RADIO: CMJ is the main target because of the initial exposure with the 'Even Think' single and the success of the band at CMJ '09. With Pirate! Promotions hired and in place, we should see better CMJ charting positions with all key stations. The main focus outside of station calls will be to again maximize any in-studio performances available. Every station that has had them in has said nothing but good things and we hope to keep that going with the album. PRESS: The early press successes the band has seen will be invaluable in kick-starting the album’s campaign and indicates we should certainly set our goals high, furthering the band’s already established online/tastemaker presence and realistically setting our sights on significant mainstream exposure. The foundational elements of this campaign will be a steady stream of creative web content, a strong visual imaging initiative, significant touring presence/regional publicity exposure and a dedicated listening push to key writers and editors. TOUR: The Agency Group is currently booking the band on opening slots with larger bands in some of the top east coast markets. Drink Up Buttercup is heading to SXSW and will look at dates going into and out of Austin in March. With several dates at SXSW, the additional exposure within the industry will help to get this band on bigger and bigger tours post SXSW and release of the album the week after. online: Full online marketing campaign to be executed by For The Win Media. The campaign will focus on several areas including Social Media - creating profiles and increasing exposure through those channels and fans, Widgets - to have an easy to use tool to disseminate audio and video, email marketing - to both increase the numbers and communicate more frequently and Promotions -such as premiering video content in exchange for high profile placement. + Previously unreleased video footage including television studio quality sound and video and a super-8 film created during Liliput tour, 1982.
Overview: If you've watched any live YouTube footage of Kleenex/Liliput then you know how amazing they were as a live band. This two CD/DVD set is a testament to their greatness. Featuring Kleenex live in Biel in 1979 and Liliput live in Zurich in 1983, the CD includes some never before released songs and the sounds of a world-class band in their prime. The DVD is the much rumored about document of their European tour in 1982 mostly shot in Super 8mm and featuring their music.
Press Quotes: "Liliput celebrate the right rock gives to say anything, expressing their keen, nothumorless intellects through voices and music alike. Their influence can be heard throughout the riot-grrl Diaspora of modern times, but Liliput managed one crucial difference: they made radical social and aesthetic re-engineering sound like the greatest party you've ever been to in your life." — Pitchfork, 2001 "...Liliput's alternate vision of pop is inspiring, entrancing, and therefore utterly essential..." - NME Magazine, 2001 "...Eerie and delightful. Erudite and infantile. Nearly unknown, without an ounce of selfpity." - Spin Magazine, 2001 "They convey both raw power and a sense of absolute creative freedom with every track, whether itʼs a bouncy more pop-ish number or an angular piece of post-punk. Theyʼre easy to fit within categories of both punk rock and feminism, yet they play with such a carefree, wild attitude that itʼs hard to imagine them pausing to intellectualize or categorize what they do." - Popmatters.com, 2001

Ron Contour may or may not be underground hip hop hero Moka Only, he may or may not be a rapper, and he may or may not be Canadian. The only thing that’s certain is that Ron enjoys the finer things in life including food, women and vintage clothing. Ron’s style has been described by the rapping industry as being “highly erractic, conceited, spacey, wandering, loopy and devastating and cement textured and/or fragrant”. “Saffron”, his latest and greatest collaboration with producer Factor is the perfect introduction to Ron’s world of debauchery and snacking. Factor’s production is top notch (as always) laced with his signature drums, psychedelic funk and folk beauty. Ron’s first release in 1999 was masterminded by Moka and was actually BILLED as Moka only IS Ron contour. Moka did this as a sneaky way to break Ron Contour into the rapping industry so he could do his rapping, eating and other things. The album came out to critical acclaim although there was some confusion as to whether or not it was really Moka on the album. After 2000 Ron Contour dropped out of the scene altogether to pursue girls and beekeeping. Women have found him tolerable . In 2007 Ron approached Moka about getting back into the rapping industry. His newest accomplishment, besides getting his driver’s liscense, is an album that he completed with superstar rap producer Factor that is entitled “Saffron” to be released by the wonderful Fake Four records. They also provided ron with a much needed dental plan. Ron’s favorite quote is “whenever theres good times to be had, you’ll be glad’. And based upon Ron’s current level of work and his soon to be massive, errect catalog there most definately WILL be good times to be had ahead while ingesting his thick, beefy music catalog. AND you just might be glad. Very glad.

FEATURING
Mickey R
eal soul transcends all genres of music. R&B “got soul,” to only state the most obvious, but the best rock “got soul,” too. The angelic-voiced singer John Michael “Mickey” Thomas injected revitalizing soul into the pop rocking Jefferson Starship beginning in the late 70s, propelling them to super stardom on the # 1 hits “We Built This City” and “Sara” in 1985. Before joining the band, however, he gained serious roots music credibility when he stepped up to sing the stunning lead vocal in 1976 on stone bluesman Elvin Bishop’s surprise # 3 hit, “Fooled Around and Fell in Love.” Thirty years and counting into his ongoing tenure with the Starship, the amateur cook now turns his sweet and sour voice to a discriminating selection of choice covers and creates a spectacular musical statement with The Bluesmasters, testifying with sweaty fervor to his rock audience while making true believers of blues fans. As if to acknowledge his years of preparation and knowledge of the material, Thomas recorded all his vocals in one take. The Bluesmasters name is no idle boast. Ace guitarist/producer/music publisher Tim Tucker and pianist Sean Benjamin, who plays on two tracks, formed them in 2007. Using his vast experience and contacts, Tucker assembled a tight, tough ensemble behind Thomas with the fatback drumming of legendary British bluesman Aynsley Dunbar, bassist Danny Miranda, organist Ric Ulsky, harmonicist Doug Lynn - the featured soloist - and the addition of a number of guest artists. Thomas has a connoisseur’s taste as well as unbridled confidence in his ability, and he ranges from prewar country blues to postwar electric Chicago blues, Kansas City shuffles to R&B, and even a classic rock number and an original.

It seems like we’re all waiting for a story these days, some dream to escape to. A tale told by the fireplace with its heroes and villains, a That’s-all-Folks kind of ending and a piano playing I’m Dreaming Of A White Christmas with the whole family around it. Tahiti Boy dreamt that dream and turned it into Good Children Go To Heaven. Here’s how the story goes. After spending a few years in New York City and working with some of NYC's best underground acts (Mike Ladd, Antipop Consortium, TV on the Radio...), Tahiti Boy aka David Sztanke came back to France with a head full of new music and beautiful melodies. Setting up in Paris, he started to gather musicians from some of the coolest indie bands around (Jamaica and Syd matters to name but a few) and in no time found himself heading the best backing band in town. They called themselves the Palmtree family. On top of the traditionnal pop combo, they’ve added percussions, a cello, and Tahiti Boy's keyboards, central elements of their signature groovy psychedelic pop sound inspired by Sly Stone, the Beatles and the Supremes . Their debut album was released locally to critical acclaim last year and find them swimming in the same musical seas as The Flaming Lips, Of Montreal with an added obvious Michel Legrand and Serge Gainsbourg inspired french touch. Tahiti Boy shoots the whole scene and each song is like a pop gem. “1973” is everyone’s favorite, a great pastoral and psychedelic tune with a great video. “Brooklyn” features a perfect summer pop melody as Tahiti Boy sings about his years spent in NYC, between his classes at the Juilliard School and his job in a music shop. Last but not least, Tunde Adebimpe (TV on the Radio) joins the family on “That Song”, a more introspective and minimalistic affair. This US Edition comes packed with 4 exclusive songs, including Para One’s brilliant remix of “1973” an eerie feeling in total harmony with the family’s spirit. At this point, you would call the whole thing a divine blessing. Good children go to heaven. And according to Tahiti Boy, we’re all good children.

The! Right Ons - Look Inside, Now! !
The most American sounding Rock n' Roll band not from America, The Right Ons are in fact from Madrid, Spain (and sing entirely in English). Drawing heavily on the Detroit Garage Sound, as well as funk and soul from the 60's and 70's, the band's energetic live show has become legendary on the festival circuit in Spain. After the band toured the US in the fall of 2008, they stopped at Q Division Studios in Boston to make a record with producer Ed Valauskas (Eli "Paperboy" Reed & The True Loves). They tracked the entire record live in just two weeks and the result is Look Inside, Now! - available now for the first time in the US. ! “The Rights Ons turned up the dial. I heard traces of Led Zeppelin and the Stooges in their sound, though they were totally modern. Sort of like Jet if they were out of Madrid, their youthful energy set the tone.” - BILLBOARD “The quintet from Madrid, Spain is like a party in a box. They’re well-studied students of the classic Detroit garage rock sound, with bits of Jimi Hendrix and Sly and the Family Stone thrown in as well.” – TWANGVILLE
