GREAT BIG SEA XX

K EY D A T A R el e as e D a te : November 27th, 2012 F i l e Un d er : Po p/ F o lk
Time, and their own stubbornness and persistence has proven them right. Complied by the band members themselves, ‘XX’ is a special two-disc set which captures the many highs in a 20 year recording career which has produced ten full length CDs, and two DVDs. In order to express the band’s two sides, one disc covers their biggest hits from their more pop-oriented repertoire, while the other contains some of their most loved traditional and folk songs. To balance out the discs the band recorded five new songs, almost a new album in themselves, which run the gamut of their varied stylistic approach. The special limited edition box set that accompanies this release is packed with bonus material that both the casual and truly committed fan will enjoy. Besides the two-disc greatest hits collection, it includes another disc that contains some of the band’s lesser known excursions and experiments. Over a 20 year career the band has sometimes gone astray, and these embryonic ideas and mis-steps will be fascinating to those who have followed the band’s varied career. Another audio disc features one of the band’s first interviews, recorded in the fall of 1993 for CBC St. John‘s, which includes rare and unheard songs from the band’s earliest days. The box contains a special book covering the many ups and downs of their career, along with lyric sheets, stickers, and a calendar covering a year in the band’s life. True fans are eagerly awaiting the set’s DVD, which contains a movie edited together by Sean. Containing a wealth of early interviews, backstage foolishness and general craziness, it captures the madness of the band’s first few years, but without the bruises, bad food and hangovers of the real thing.

ALIVE AT THE DEEP BLUES FEST recaptures the loose and spontaneous feel of live albums produced in the Golden Age of rock’n’roll. The album was recorded live this summer at the Deep Blues Festival during three glorious (sold-out) days of great music, Southern-style BBQ and camaraderie between musicians, fans and friends alike, far from the corporate sterility of many larger modern music fests. Chris Johnson’s festival successfully revived the communal spirit of late ‘60s and early ‘70s music gatherings, evoking the vibe of a large summer picnic with family, friends, good food and great music.

BUFFALO KILLERS and RADIO MOSCOW turned in super heavy sets soaked in psychedelia and reverb, while LEE BAINS III & The GLORY FIRES fiercely ripped through their show with a blistering set of songs steeped in Southern rock, R&B, soul, gospel and punk. BRIAN OLIVE and his backing band melded soulful R&B with technicolor garage-pop for their early daytime set, while HENRY’S FUNERAL SHOE,(the Welsh duo) LEFT LANE CRUISER and newcomers JOHN THE CONQUEROR perhaps kept closest to the Deep Blues curriculum with their respectively raunchy and heavily amplified modern interpretations of rural gutbucket Delta Blues. Grab a copy of Alive At The Deep Blues Fest, invite a bunch of good friends over for some food & drink, and PLAY IT LOUD! ALIVE0137-2 • DIGIPAK : 30 BAR CODE : 095081013728 SRLP : $14.99 • ROCK
Soul Jazz Records Presents... Delta Swamp Rock 2 STREET DATE: 11/13/2012 New on Soul Jazz Records, the second volume of Delta Swamp Rock continues to journey into the heartland of the American south, exploring the musical links between country, rock and soul music in the 1960s and early 1970s. Deep in the southern towns and cities of America - Muscle Shoals, Nashville, Memphis and Macon – select groups of (largely unknown) session musicians made musical history on an almost daily basis. Southern rock rose up in the 1970s on the huge commercial success of southern-based groups The Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, Lynyrd Skynyrd and others. Like the twisted roots of rock and roll, southern rock put country, rock and black music into a melting pot to create a unique sound. This gave rise to a new identity for white southern working-class youth. The roots of this revolution were to be found in an obscure corner of Alabama, in the sleepy town of Muscle Shoals, where, in the previous decade, a group of white in-house studio musicians worked together with the greatest rhythm and blues vocalists of the day - Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Etta James and many others - away from the segregated environment found just outside the studio walls. Delta Swamp Rock 2 contains extensive sleeve-notes in an accompanying deluxe large outsize book housed in double-backed card case, which also includes stunning photography from the Getty picture archive and new interviews with a number of the featured artists. As well as the deluxe slipcase CD edition there is also a similarly deluxe limited edition heavyweight double gatefold vinyl edition complete with full sleeve-notes and super-loud pressing. 2012 has seen all the classic albums from The Sea and Cake return on vinyl as part of our 20th Anniversary vinyl reissue campaign. The band has also released their ninth studio album Runner to critical acclaim and are touring heavily in support. We are now happy to offer the 1994 self-titled debut from The Sea and Cake on vinyl again! This 2012 edition has been remastered to vinyl by Roger Seibel at SAE Mastering. Packaged in a full color jacket emulating the original and for the first time includes a free download coupon. “The Sea and Cake’s buoyant debut is a breath of fresh air, an utterly distinctive and innovative work that expands the scope of frontman Sam Prekop’s work in the great Shrimp Boat to incorporate a new fascination with Afro-Caribbean rhythms and textures. Recorded by Brad Wood, the album simply glows -- Prekop’s dry vocals and free-associative lyrics skip along a shimmering and lushly pastoral backdrop that nimbly fuses pop, soul, jazz, and even prog rock; tracks like “Jacking the Ball,” “Flat Lay the Water,” and “Showboat Angel” are as seductive as they are elusive.” - All Music

Daniel Higgs’ massive double album Say God has been sold out on vinyl since it was released in 2010. We are happy to bring it back as part of our 20th Anniversary LP re-issue campaign. The 2xLP is presented in an old-style tip-on gatefold jacket and includes a full color 8” x10” insert and free download coupon. Daniel Higgs will be touring with OM this November. SAY GOD is an album of gospel songs and poems as presently received by this Daniel Higgs. Recorded with the help and enthusiasm of David Andrew Sitek, who graciously provided this Daniel Higgs with an environment in which to prosper and enjoy the adventure of recording, or, if you will, the ENSNARING of songs as they migrate through time and mind, that they might be heard many places at once, with the singer absent. Song seeds cast abroad, that their message, THE ADVENT OF THE SONGWAY, the WAY ACROSS, might take root, twist and fruit, light for all. It is the simple hope of this Daniel Higgs that the album SAY GOD may be of any use to the listener, may serve the listener, may accompany the listener in clairaudient fellowship.

If you had to define what it is about Offshore's music that makes him stand out a little from the the whole post-dubstep brouhaha, it's that he combines an ability to make big, vicious, system-shaking tracks that also sound human - eccentric and handmade and unique. Using the space given him by the fulllength and informed by spending more time listening to Gang Of Four than the latest EDM/trap sensation, Ewan Robertson crashes together styles and instruments and ideas like an eccentric 19th century anarchist pastry chef given access to a Moulinex. The result is exhilarating, funny and cutting edge, yes, but also deeply affecting. There aren't that many electronic musicians who make music that sounds so personal, so much an emanation of their own personality. So while a track like "Downer" has the kind of wide-screen emotiveness that we've come to expect from this Aberdonianin-London, "Venom" buzzes with rhythmic drive and off-centre malice, "Slip" is epic hip hop and "Bake Haus" itself a kind of deconstructed slow-jam. In between you can find post-rock, static and malfunctioning computers. Robertson plunges tracks, sounds, styles and moods together here into a continuous piece of music, where the individual tunes are less important than the way in which they're strung together. It makes for a short, visceral and, at times, beautiful suite of music which should establish Offshore as a key name in new electronic music and further build interest in his full full-length (this only being a palette-whetting mini-album) which is due next year. The buzz around Ewan Robertson aka Offshore has grown and grown since his debut release with Stuff/Numbers and his two EPs on Big Dada. Combining elements of grime, dubstep, hip hop, early electronic music and more into a unique, off-kilter sound, Offshore won't stay secret much longer. "Filled with emotive melodies, minimal grime snap, hip hop bump and Celtic swing" Resident Advisor Redeye Distribution, 449-A Trollingwood Rd Haw River, NC 27258 USA Contact: Lori Miller - lori@redeyeusa.com www.redeyeusa.com
NINJA TUNE NEW RELEASES FOR 20th NOVEMBER FALTY DL - STRAIGHT & ARROW 12" “Straight & Arrow” offers a clear idea why. FaltyDL makes pitch-perfect, beautiful, widescreen club music that works as well pumped from ear buds straight to your cerebral cortex as blasted from club soundsystems. He’s a technically gifted, subtle producer who understands that soul should never be sacrificed to tastefulness. On this 12" Four Tet reimagines the original, initially with the vocal hook and shuffling beat but evolving into a late-night crescendo of acid-tinged electronica. In between, Mike Q and Divoli S’vere concentrate on the beat, piling kicks and claps together for a sparse but compelling floorfiller.

FALTY DL - STRAIGHT & ARROW 7" It’s a mark of how highly he’s thought of in the world of electronic music that Falty DL can command remixes of the same single from both Four Tet and Gold Panda. This 7" release of 'Straight & Arrow' showcases the reworkings of the latter who chops things up to create an irresistible alternate groove.

LETHERETTE - FEATURETTE Drawing on Bangalter-inflected house but giving it a rumble and wing, Letherette make infectious, beat-driven music which is as fun and un-self-conscious as it is clever and technically cutting edge. From the exuberant cut-up boogie of “Warstones,” through moments of ethereal beauty on the four-to-the-floor stomper “Ettewards,” on into delicate, poised “Surface” (featuring vocals from Jed + Lucia) and finally the spaced hip hop of “Wecko,” the childhood friends use the “Featurette” EP to show their range and diversity as well as their technical nous. After two releases on the excellent Ho Tep Records, an appearance on “Brownswood Electric,” a couple of stunning remixes (for Machinedrum and Bibio) and a fantastic DJ mix for BTS Radio, plus support from the likes of Benji B, Gilles Peterson and Brackles Letherette are ready to make the musical leap to the big time. Bus People Express ( The Poets of Rhythm) “Augusta Georgia” b/w “South Carolina” DAP 1069
LIMITED TO 500 COPIES AND PRESSED ON CLEAR, GLOW IN THE DARK VINYL! First released in 1993 as the 2nd single on Hotpie & Candy Records, this long out of print single shows the soul-saints, which later became The Poets of Rhythm, at their most raw and funky . Inspired by a greyhound bus trip Bo and JJ took on Christmas eve ´91, from New York To New Orleans, these sessions were originally demo recordings for the first poets of rhythm LP “Practice what you Preach”. The A side, “Augusta Georgia” is a blazing funk masterpiece that has even the most discerning funk enthusiast clambering for an original copy. The B side, “North Carolina” was later rerecorded for “Practice What you Preach”, but the group agreed that the loose energy present on the original demo couldn’t be recreated in the studio. It was then decided to release the original 4-track cassette recordings as, Bus People Express. Predating any releases as Poets of Rhythm, this was the first an array of aliases the band would assume in the years to follow. Both sides are included on the forthcoming Daptone LP – Poets of Rhythm Anthology 1992 - 2003.

AUK009LP LP (180GRM) $21.99 27th November 2012 ‘a’ Records 689492067410
Originally released in 1996 now reissued on “a records” Anton Newcombe’s own record label Released on 180 g Green vinyl Taken from the original vinyl release with the original tracks & re cut at Abbey Road The Brian Jonestown Massacre is a psychedelic rock band originally from San Francisco, California, led by guitarist/singer Anton Newcombe. Since 1995 The Brian Jonestown Massacre has released numerous albums, first for Bomp! Records, the label which gave them their start, and later for TVT and Tee Pee. BJM has been essential in the development of the modern U.S. garage scene, and many LA and SF musicians got their start playing with Newcombe, including Peter Hayes of The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Originally Newcombe was heavily influenced by The Rolling Stones' psychedelic phase - the name comes from Stones guitarist Brian Jones combined with a reference to cult leader Jim Jones, but his work in the 2000s has expanded into aesthetic dimensions approximating the UK Shoegazing genre of the 1990s and incorporating influences from world music, especially Middle Eastern and Brazilian music. With The Dandy Warhols, The Brian Jonestown Massacre is one of the subjects of the documentary DIG!, winner of the 2004 Grand Jury Prize Documentary at Sundance. DIG! is also a part of the Permanent Collection of the NY Museum of Modern Art. Since the release of DIG!, the band has achieved increasing critical acclaim and recognition, and has performed at Cochella and Lollapalooza in 2005 with special mentions from the NY Times and Washington Post. They have also toured the UK, Japan, Australia, as well as Continental Europe..

Noise For Pretend Happy You Near (10th Anniversary Edition)
STREET DATE: 11/27/2012
“The trio has many weapons but their most devastating is lead vocalist Esperanza Spalding, who plucks a mean double bass. Sonically, it’s about the equivalent of a spy film set in Trinidad, with a healthy, tempering dose of style and cool. All told Happy You Near is an estimable debut. -Pitchfork The surprise winner of the Best New Artist Grammy-beating out a hopeful Justin Bieber in 2011--was jazz sensation Esperanza Spalding. In retrospect it’s little surprise: she is not only an ambassador for Jazz but for musicians irrespective of genre. She has become an icon, gracing magazine covers (Bass Player, New York Times Magazine, Buzz) appearing in fashion campaigns (Banana Republic),performing at the 2012 Academy Awards Ceremony, appearing on talk shows (The Daily Show, Late Night with David Letterman, The Tonight Show, Later with Jools Holland, etc.), and the subject of in-depth profile pieces (NPR, The New York Times, The New Yorker and many more). Ten years after she recorded Happy You Near with Christian Cochran and Ben Workman, Spalding released her highly anticipated album Radio Music Society as as followup to her Billboard #1 Biggest Selling Contemporary Jazz release Chamber Music Society. If fans were looking for a "crossover" record with her latest, then they might find themselves better served with this well-aged collection. The songs themselves defy genre--they are not jazz, not alternative, not indie--but are richly hybridized without veering into “fusion” tropes. You’ll find no 3 minute solos or scat singing here. Instead, Happy You Near is brimming with tight and surprising arrangements that you can tap your toe to and sing along with. Out of print in physical format for several years now, this studio album produced by Adam Selzer (The Decemberists, M Ward, Laura Gibson, Jolie Holland) will appeal both to those who are familiar with Spalding’s jazz repertoire as well as those who can't quite step to it.

LP is Gatefold sleeve and heavy weight vinyl. Lone Wolf began life in 2009 in various dusty rooms and tape studios around Sweden where Paul Marshall (aka Lone Wolf) pulled his songs and ideas slowly together with the assistance of Kristofer Jonson from Jeniferever. Using powerful percussion, Paul’s adept skills on 6-string (electric) guitar and the soaring backing vocals of XL Recordings’ Blue Roses, The Lovers is a lean lover and fighter of a record, stripping back the role and sound of a singer songwriter and heading into a territory that only the likes of Mark Hollis have dared tread.

King Midas Sound released their enthralling debut album ‘Waiting For You’ in the fading light of November 2009. A hypermodern nocturnal take on Lovers Rock, featuring delicate but sour electronic instrumentals topped with Roger Robinson's bitter-sweet falsetto and Kiki Hitomi’s fragile voice, it highlighted a hitherto less-exposed side not just of producer Kevin Martin’s musical evolution, but that Hyperdub’s too.

‘Cocked And Loaded’, is an album recorded in Los Angeles with seasoned producers Tom Werman (Motley Crue, Twisted Sister, Cheap Trick) alongside Duane Barron & John Purdell (Poison, Ozzy Osbourne, Heart) and featuring guest appearances from Ted Nugent, Derek St. Holmes, Robin Zander and Rick Nielson. The results were spectacular, confirming that LA Guns were more than just a flash in the pan by storming the US charts, selling over a million copies and producing two bonafide hit singles with ‘Never Enough’ and the power ballad ‘The Ballad Of Jane’Stylistically their no-nonsense style of razor sharp riffs and tough-guy bravado also helped them to surf the grunge onslaught from Seattle allowing the band an afterlife that many were ultimately denied. Make no mistake, ‘Cocked & Loaded’ remains one of the most comprehensive and exciting records to have emerged from the glam/sleaze movement.

Signing to PolyGram the band recorded their debut album on home turf in Los Angeles with producer Jim Faraci (Ratt, Poison, Femme Fatale). The results were hugely encouraging, the band whipping up a frenzy of low-slung sleaze in the finest style. Originally issued in 1988, the album surprised even their most dedicated supporters by quickly going gold and selling a cool half million units in the US alone. Amongst a brace of classic tracks, including ‘Sex Action’, ‘Electric Gypsy’ and ‘Bitch Is Back’ is a surprising cover of the Girl anthem ‘Hollywood Teaze’, a track allowing Phil Lewis to link past ambitions with his newly adopted home of Los Angeles.

Sir Bald Diddley is one of the most ubiquitous men in rock’n’roll, with his numerous surf, rock’n’roll, garage, blues, R&B and rockabilly bands. He’s been described as “Britain’s string king” in reference to his wild and fiery guitar style, influenced by Bo Diddley, Link Wray, Chuck Berry, Dick Dale and the like. His singing, meanwhile, has been said to sound like “Ricky Nelson gone very wrong”! For your aural delectation, we have assembled no less than four of the Bald Bomber’s top notch musical combos on this 40 track long set, which runs the full gamut of rock’n’roll styles.

A limited edition release from String Driven Thing. The past is another country, as L. P. Hartley almost said and here Glasgow singer and songwriter Chris Adams does his best to prove him right. Adams, a Glasgow beat, hippie, rock star and producer once shared management and label with the likes of Genesis in the seventies. His band String Driven Thing graced the pages of Rolling Stone and the NME and almost made it big time. Since then he has occasionally resurfaced, has been big in Europe and has most recently grabbed his history by the collar. The band, George Tucker, Andy Allen and Dick Drake rise to the occasion. Like a fine wine this album oozes quality and slips down easy and is all the better for being of a certain vintage.

JK FLESH . PRURIENT WORSHIP IS THE CLEANSING OF THE IMAGIN AT I ON
JK Flesh is the new alias adopted by Justin Broadrick, the man behind revered extreme music pioneers like Napalm Death, Godflesh, and Jesu. But Broadrick has also always been a sonic explorer into new realms of dark, experimen tal electronic-fueled music, whether in his early ambient forays under the moniker Final, the warped club-music throb of Techno Animal, or his more recent caustic bludgeonings as part of the Greymachine collaboration. As JK Flesh, Broadrick has taken his knowledge of electronic sound manipulation and his penchant for violent and foreboding music and melded them into one of his most alarming and abrasive releases to date. Inspired by contemporary artists like Prurient and their noise scene crossover industrial dance music, JK Flesh finds Broadrick rekindling his passion for the brutal, heavy, and caustic sounds that first put him on the map while employing the electronic components that have pushed his music forward.

It’s only fitting then that JK Flesh would team up with a bright new noise maker like Dominick Fernow. Under his alias as Prurient, Fernow’s extensive discography delves into pure, unadulterated noise but also veers into more synth-conjured, melody-driven compositions. You might find Fernow alone on a stage, shirt off, shrieking into his table of electronics, or you might find him on stage as a member of Cold Cave’s neo-EBM live band. It’s a duality directly inspired by Broadrick’s legacy, and thus a perfect compliment to a split album release. The resultant split offers up two distinct voices experimenting with a similar theme—how close can you come to total cacophony while still trans mitting the basic components of a traditional song? How filthy and wretched can you render your tones while still hinting at a melody? How far can you deconstruct a beat while still sustaining a recognizable rhythm? Worship Is The Cleansing Of The Imagination is a product of mutual admiration, a result of two generations of artists inspiring each other and feeding off their sonic revelations. It’s only fitting that this meeting of minds, this exercise in mining new territories, and this bridging of a generational gap serves as the final release for the long-running art-metal label Hydra Head Records. While both an acknowledgment of an artist that served as an impetus to the label and an embrace of one of the underground’s most daring and invigorating young noisemakers, this split release perfectly encapsulates Hydra Head’s musical vision. While the self-proclaimed “imminent demise” of the label is certainly a tragic blow to the international community built around Hydra Head’s artmetal predilections, it’s reassuring to see their swan song so perfectly capture the essence of its mission statement. NINJA TUNE / WERKDISCS NEW RELEASES FOR 11th DECEMBER LUKID - 'THIS DOG CAN SWIM' Let us present to you a record called This Dog Can Swim, the first single from Lukid’s forthcoming album Lonely At The Top, and a 12” that is sure to become a landmark statement in the burgeoning Dog genre. The A side belongs to Lukid, on which he presents us with two uniquely haunting snapshots of canine life. The title track is a fierce one; Lukid pairs the splashiest snare ever recorded with a disconcertingly icy synth to create three and a half minutes of rabid music sure to get your favourite tail-wagger all worked up into a fury. Where the opening track is bloodthirsty and feral, the 2nd is a more domesticated affair, with Lukid using the same dog-sounds to create a new dog-mood. Paying tribute to man’s best friends' more affectionate side, This Dog Can Run twists the icy synths into twinkly melody, then buries it under a layer of fog and detritus to create a warmer (if still unnerving) portrait of a hound. The B side belongs to the remixers. First up is 1991, an elusive young Swede who came to our attention after using his allotted bi-monthly hour of internet time to upload some incredibly timeless gems to his soundcloud page. The 2nd remix comes from Mass Prod, a Genoan lad whose hobbies include techno and satan. Both producers provide abstract and spiralling meditations on Lukid’s mongrel, creating the perfect footnote to this whole barbarous affair. ADRIAN SHERWOOD RECOVERY TIME ONULP1023 RELEASE: 12.11.12 TRACKLIST: A1 In Full Effect A2 An Earful B1 Semistoned B2 Entrapment
Earlier this year, ‘Survival & Resistance’ marked Adrian Sherwood’s first solo full-length album in over 6 years. That album deftly blended melancholy dub psychedelia, lilting synthesizer and string arrangements and Sherwood’s ever-present undercurrent of politicized punk perspective. Now following on from there comes ‘Recovery Time’, an EP built from the shattered pieces of ‘Survival & Resistance’ - yet reassembled using the relentless bounce of dancehall and primed for the dance. Adapted from compositional elements of album tracks, the material on the EP has been reworked to fit firmly into Adrian’s notoriously banging live and DJ sets. Never eschewing the dub innovations that are Sherwood’s trademark, ‘Recovery Time’ refracts it through a prism of club music both old and new, and shreds a few bassbins in the process.
MAIN SELLING POINTS: - Tougher club focused mixes of tracks from the album ‘Survival & Resistance’ - Limited to 250 for N. America - Manufactured and marketed by Warp Records. - Online and PR campaign by Gamall @ Backspin Promotions.

Genre: Halloween beatnik jazz and sordid spooky songs. Just in time for Halloween, Fingertips offer up yet another forgotten masterpiece with a scary 30 track collection that brings together the complete classic vinyl rarity 'Poe For Moderns' by Buddy Morrow and his Orchestra, along with the best of the late '50s and early '60s music inspired by the burgeoning horror movie genre. Buddy Morrow And His Orchestra took the opportunity to roll out a whole album's worth of haunted melodies using the stories of Edgar Allan Poe as their inspiration under the suitably beat title 'Poe For Moderns', in which they also tried to appeal to the beat generation as well as horror fans. 'Poe for Moderns' mixes spoken word and spooky jazz fronted by a cooler-than-thou beatnik-styled English lecturer intoning the tales alongside creeped out harmonies from The Skip-Jacks. Alongside this horror genre classic are 18 classic exploitation 45s mainly culled from the classic horror year of 1958 when The Blob and I Married A Monster From Outer Space were staples at the drive-in. With classic performances by TV horror show hosts John Zacherle and Bob McFadden, tales of purple people eaters from both Joe South and the legendary Bo Diddley and a good smattering of Frankenstein and Dracula novelty hits, it's wall-to-wall gore with a fine sense of humour. The collection is an eerie kaleidoscope of doo wop weirdness, rollicking rockabilly with much maniacal laughter, plus oddball visions from the likes of Nervous Norvous and downright strange stories from a host of vintage crooners. Remastered from the original sound sources, the packaging includes copious sleevenotes by MOJO magazine's Dave Henderson. When punk's implosion offered British musicians a chance to once again draw on earlier eras for inspiration, one of those who took full advantage was Gerard Langley, the frontman of Bristol's free-floating collective Blue Aeroplanes. The sustenance Langley drew from Bob Dylan's nasal monologues (as well as Lou Reed's) is evident on the band's second album, which offers wordy musings on subjects as diverse as Andy Warhol, "Soul," and W.H. Auden's "Journal of an Airman" (recited here to somewhat less than dramatic effect). Luckily, the talented half-dozen bandmembers back him with a tight and coherent sound, full of postpunk's scratchy rhythm guitars and rubber band basslines, as well as the occasional effective embellishment on instruments like French horn and banjo. Using reference points that include prime Gang of Four ("Rare Flowers") and early R.E.M. ("Arrival"), the players take the pressure off Langley's poetry; he even sings on "When the Wave Comes," a pop-leaning treat. Though not as fully realized as later Aeroplanes outings, the ambitious Tolerance isn't overwhelmed by its own artiness, either - no small feat.

3xCD + 24 page booklet. The second release from Famous Flames is all about the power of melody and the marvels of the juxtaposition of saxophones and guitars. ‘The Backbeat Of Rock and Roll’ brings together the great songs that didn’t need a singalong chorus or a life-defining one liner in their lyrics. This wordless journey includes the infectious grooves and finger-popping hits that relied on twangy guitars, syncopated rhythms, all-consuming organs and honking brass stabs. Sure, there’s the odd mention of ‘Tequila’ and the odd instructional dance move but in this 92 track compilation, it’s the back beat that takes centre stage as the perfect follow up to Famous Flames' acclaimed ‘First Rock and Roll Record’ CD. This collection, compiled by Dave Henderson from Mojo Magazine, contains 94 tracks from the 1950s, the glory days of instrumental music, the very backbone of rock 'n' roll, the spine of RnB and primitive pop music. Littered with chart topping hits from rock 'n' roll legends including Duane Eddy, Johnny And The Hurricanes, Link Wray, The Ventures and The Champs, the album features a procession of radio-friendly favourites including 'Raunchy', 'Wild Weekend', 'Bongo Rock', 'Madison Time', 'The Happy Organ' and 'Ooh Poo Pah Doo'. ‘Backbeat..’ is chock full of inspirational moments, like the Keith Richards-approved 'The Fickle Chicken', Jimmy Page heroes Santo & Johnny, the embryo of rock 'n' roll, 'Rumble', and Cramps faves like The Duals along with the birth of surf instrumentals courtesy of Dick Dale and The Belairs. Including buried treasure like the northern soul gem 'Gonzo' by James Brooker, The Dyna-Sores' flipside 'Jungle Walk' and The Frantics' "sensuous" 'The Whip', every song is a must from a time when the bongo was king, the saxophone honked remorselessly and string bending guitars were nothing short of essential. What is Fairhorns? Fairhorns is the sound of the dirty future to come. More prosaically - but not by much - Fairhorns is Bristol based multi-instrumentalist Matt Loveridge, best known for his role as guitar abuser and keyboard/synth manipulator in acclaimed experimental rock trio Beak> alongside Billy Fuller (Fuzz Against Junk) and Geoff Barrow (Portishead, Quakers). You may also know Matt as Team Brick, whose 2009 debut album Alogon was greeted with considerable praise. Prior to that, Team Brick had garnered a reputation for unpredictable, exciting and often confrontational live shows, suggesting a British-born hybrid of R Stevie Moore, C Spencer Yeh (Burning Star Core) and Mike Patton. After a number of years of getting thoroughly puzzled with itself - and self-releasing a succession of limited-run CDRs covering ground from chiptune pop to heavy drone and Power Radiophonics Team Brick splintered into several different projects, each one focusing on a separate element. Thus, Fairhorns was born. Released via forward-thinking UK label Invada, DOKI DOKI RUN is the project’s debut album. Matt describes Fairhorns as “the fuzzed out, too-much-coffee haze of an all-night YouTube binge. Blackened Kraut. Ur-Step. Half-remembered kids TV theme tunes on a locked groove. Autistic blues - music for angry nerds who like to groove stoically and immobile.” The discerning listener may detect elements reminiscent of Hospital-era Cold Cave, Xeno & Oaklander, La Dusseldorf and even avant-doom pranksters Crom in the album’s quixotic flow, ranging from clattering electro-percussive assault to organ-led dreamscape. “Baffling , startling , Doki Doki Run is an eccentric gem that rewards and encourages careful listening” – 9/10 Loud & Quiet

Now on CD for the first time, the 2LP came out last year. The title obviously is a reworking of Clear Spot - Translucent Fresnel (Fresnel is a spotlight). From the late 1960’s through to 1980 John Peel collected tapes of recordings of Captain Beefheart’s live shows particularly ones in the UK. During a tidy up at Nan True’s Hole in 2003 he discovered around six large reels of tape containing many of Beefheart’s live UK performances and he sent these on to Ozit Morpheus Records. Here is Volume 1 of material from the tapes. Like all Beefheart live tracks they are chaotic, erratic and yet charming. Because of the age of the material and sometimes crude recording techniques there is the odd glitch in the recordings but rather than try and digitally repair the sound you get it exactly as it came off the tapes warts and all but full of Beefheartian energy. Volume 1 is songs mainly from the Clearspot era tour of the UK. Band line up for most of these tracks : Captain Beefheart -Don Van Vliet -vocals and harmonica / Zoot Horn Rollo- Bill Harkleroad - guitar slide guitar / Rockette Morton- Mark Boston- bass guitar, guitar / Alex St Clair- Alex Snouffer- slide guitar / Ed Marimba- Art Tripp- drums, percussion / Orejon -Roy Estrada- bass guitar. John Peel said in 2003 “This tape of UK live tracks mainly from the Clearspot Tour era shows the Captain and his Magic Band in fine form. I actually remember these tracks like they were yesterday as I was at a lot of the live shows during that period.” John Peel “Captain Beefheart was driven in pursuit of his music to the borderline between imbalance and genius." Tracks : Suction Prints, Crazy Little thing, Electricity, Golden Birdies, I’m gonna Booglarise You Baby, King Bee / Sugar Mama, Low Yo Yo Stuff, Mirrorman, Peon 2, Peon, Bass Solo, Suction Prints, Sugar’n’Spikes.

“In a just world, a band of such long standing - and with a track record as great as theirs would really need no introducing. But then, as we all know, there's not much justice in the world.” Tom Robinson, BBC 6music. FIREWORK SHOES, Flipron’s fourth & strongest album, delivers what Flipron do best unique songs with piles of personality. This is an album full of questions, provocations & even arguments with itself, presented with the wit & lyrical dexterity that has become a hallmark of their output. Production comes courtesy of long-standing friend & co-conspirator Rat Scabies, who has coaxed the band into their most confident performance yet, with flavours of Alex Harvey & Sparks welded to psychedelic surf-guitar twang, 2-tone organ chips, barrelhouse piano & even Italian mandolins ending up in Flipron’s Technicolor bed of shameless musical promiscuity. The lead single from the album, The Comet Returns, features a guest vocal from Specials legend Neville Staple - the first time the band have collaborated with anyone else in this way. As Flipron guitarist, songwriter & frontman Jesse Budd says: “We’d been working on an instrumental that had a sort of 2-Tone meets Spaghetti Western feel, but we felt that it could be more atmospheric with some ad-libs & shouts, & there’s nobody who can do that sort of thing as well as Neville, so we asked him… He puts a huge amount of energy & personality into what he does. We couldn’t be more delighted. We think the whole tune has come alive with his contribution, & he‘s great in the video too!” But FIREWORK SHOES is ultimately an album as much about entertaining & engaging the listener as it is about provoking questions. One question though: How do Flipron describe their music? Well, US-based music industry mag Music Connections described the band as “Barrelhouse Britpop” which the band thought was pretty good. They quite like “psychedelic honky-tonk” too! Last question: How would you describe it? Tracks : 1 Back where we started again 2 Round and Round the Sun 3 The Big Red Button must never be pressed 4 Big Fat Blackberries 5 The King of all our Crimes 6 Until it gets light 7 The Comet Returns 8 Superstition has its uses 9 Rose-petal Blues 10 Low-Life (Seeking Elevation) 11 The Lost Mountain Lake 17 Heathmans Road, London SW6 4TJ - Tel: 0207 731 5125 - Fax: 0207 731 3866 INFO@CARGORECORDS.CO.UK SALES@CARGORECORDS.CO.UK CARGORECORDS.CO.UK

DVA started off Hyperdub’s barrage of albums in 2012 with his brilliant ‘Pretty Ugly', and now closes the the year with the ‘Fly Juice’ EP’s bumper selection of machine tooled tracks, each created for optimum dancefloor damage and road tested by DVA, Kode9 and a select bunch of DJs. These tracks (four on the double-pack vinyl, with four extra on the digital version) are a brilliant example of what he’s been describing as “power house” for a while, a colourful chunky techno sound that switches up every 8 bars like grime and has plenty of shuffle and offbeat swing as a counterpoint to the 4/4 drums. ‘Fly Juice’ opens with sweet jazz funk Rhodes before dropping into weightless bouncey chopped vocals and stuttering drums building through 8 bar patterns - with the Rhodes as a sweetner, it’s bliss! ‘Do It’ runs a stuttering voice, a huge deep bassline and relentless building stabs against shuffling drums. On 'Walk it Out’, the repetition of the title over a pummelling two note melody is positively dumb, but pitched against swirling effects and whooshing chords the effect is epic. 'Long Street' features a collaboration with South African producer Big Space, and echoes the sound of early UK bleep and bass with a stern melody, breaking down into swirling Detroit-like chords, while shuffling along on a crisp, scissoring rhythm. After the sweet and sour songfulness of his album 'Pretty Ugly', the ‘Fly Juice’ EP shows DVA returning to his dancefloor roots. As an amazing DJ/ producer, you can expect more of this in 2013. A. After last years Hyperdub debut with the popular 'Set The Tone' EP, Ossie's been busy building a name for himself, as a DJ and a producer with both Ossie and Black Orange Juice releases. He comes back to Hyperdub here with the 'Ignore EP', sporting two catchy, housey, broken beat bombs. 'Ignore' features the vocals of Tilz, singing about the game of winding up the opposite sex, over bouncy, broken drums, neat stabs, and a bendy acidic bassline, with wave-like chords building up and down as if in reflection of the cat and mouse antics of the lyrics. 'Find It' on the B-side makes good with layering some roughly cut up female vocal samples, Todd Edwards-style, but twisted and dubbed into strange shapes, incorporating sloppy, dusty drums and a bassline that sounds like Wiley's early eski beat melodies, keeping the track rolling along and sounding mischievous and chunky.

‘DEATH MESSAGE BLUES’, the powerful new album from UK swamp blues band The Inca Babies, was released on Black Lagoon Records on 21st October 2010. It was their fifth studio album in a career spanning 28 years and marked their full return to live performance after the death of founder member bassist Bill Marten. Originally formed in Manchester in 1983 by guitarist and vocalist Harry Stafford and bassist Bill Marten, the band released four albums and recorded four sessions for the BBC’s legendary John Peel Show before splitting in 1988. Reuniting in 2007, Stafford and Marten recruited Gold Blade drummer Rob Haynes, but work on the new album was halted by Marten’s sudden death in 2008. After a period of reflection, it was decided to complete the work that Marten had begun, with the band’s long-time friend Vince Hunt (A Witness) taking over on bass. This line-up has since played London, Warsaw, Milan, Los Angeles and the Drop Dead festival in Lithuania, earning a reputation for powerful live performances. They are represented throughout Europe by Germany’s premier live booking agency ‘IBD’, ‘Wardance’ in Italy and ‘Brave Booking Agency’ in the UK. ‘Death Message Blues’ features twelve new tracks penned by Harry S. casting a net across fast and spiky r’n’b, swamp blues, bastard country and punk power. Lyrically, the songs observe usual Inca traits of wild characters, ghosts and murderous stories, with reflections too on the passing of Inca founding member, bassist Bill Marten. Recorded in Manchester with sonic relish by Tim Woodward at his Courtyard Studios, this Album not so much left off where the incas paused 20 years early but has launched them into the 21st century with a renewed vigour and lust for swamp rock and trashman’s blues. Tracks. 1. Phantom Track. 2. Tumblin’ Man 3. Death Message Blues 4. Shake your soul 5. The Night was burning: the ground was frozen 6.Even lovers drown 7. Walk like Jesus 8. The Inca Babies release a new Album “Deep Dark Blue” in November 2012 on their own Black Lagoon Records. After the release of “Death Message Blues” in October of 2010, “Deep Dark Blue” is their sixth studio album. If “Death Message Blues” was a collection of loss and acceptance, after the untimely death of original bassist Bill Marten in 2008, then, “Deep Dark Blue” is a reflection of songs about hope and endeavour, but with the usual mischief and lyrical mendacity reminiscent of previous recordings. It reflects a re-shaping of the Incas sound into a perhaps mature and yet wilful approach to guitars, percussion and offbeat narratives of tall tales and extravagant characters. Made in Manchester, UK, the Album began at their now ‘house’ studio, Courtyard Recording studios, but with an unexpected breakdown laying low their brilliant producer Tim Woodward, the Incas were forced to up-root and finish elsewhere. They were recommended Phil Green’s Blue Room for its, sheer live sonic delight. And overall, the 13 new songs, written by Harry S., have taken on further inspiration of styles and genres. There’s surf punk, there’s trashman’s blues, death rock grunge and end of the world ballads. While the last album saw new territories open up for the band having played in Rome, Milan, Lithuania, Los Angeles and Warsaw, where they were embraced and applauded for their singular, blistering approach to live performance; This new album, “Deep Dark Blue”, with its exploration into yet more exuberant sounds and ideas, is looking for the band to consolidate and find yet newer untapped congregations to enthral. Tracks 1. My sick suburb 2. But not this time 3. Deep dark blue 4. Following Jorges 5. Bikini Quicksand 6. Tower of Babel 7. Monologues of Madness 8. Endgame check out club 9. The end of the blue 10. Sven Hassel v Billy the Kid 11. Slick 12.Some kinda reason 13. Menahan Street Band “Lights Out” b/w “Keep Coming Back” DAP 1068 Dark, triumphant and mysterious; the new Menahan Street band 45 single "Light's Out" conjures images of hard-fighting pugilists battling it out under a bare bulb, of a matador's graceful execution of a lumbering bull, of sweat, romance and victory. Brought in by a rollicking, almost tipsy, Hammond melody and backed by a smoky smooth guitar line, “Keep Coming Back” eventually erupts into a swanky nightlife anthem, complete with red velvet curtains and a garnished highball. Both songs are featured on their upcoming full-length titled, The Crossing, out October 30th.
