“If you like music to surprise you & to blow the cobwebs out of your pretty little heads then this is the label for you.” - Louder Than War

Redeye Distribution welcomes Deathbomb Arc to the family. Get 10% off for your first order! Label Contact: Adam Downey | Northern Spy / Clandestine | adam@northern-spy.com Captain Ahab Snakes On The Brain - Captain Ahab has been easily corrupted by fame, and now has gone completely rap-rock. So say goodbye to the days of upbeat anthem techno, and say hello to monumental epic screaming, riffs Riffs and more RIFFS, and the ugly looks to match. And to those of you saying this is all a high-art scam ala Mike Patton or Andrew W.K., you will eventually eat your words as this joke never ends. File Under: Alternative, Electro Pop; Catalog#: DBA070 Format: CD Packaging: Jewel SLP: $11.99 Barcode: 683119200822

Captain Ahab The End Of Irony - Captain Ahab is fucking committed to freeing your soul! No short cuts on this album. Is that a live guitar player? Yeah, duh! Every band has one of those. So what do you think of this live orchestra then? How about this master sitar player flown out from India to play in a room next to a guy with a modular synthesizer the size of the WOPR. These songs are the real deal, passionate and unafraid. They’re the result of Captain Ahab’s dedication to their audience. If you are ready to be set free, then your lucky day has come. All you need to do is LISTEN! File Under: Alternative Catalog#: DBA090cd, DBA090vinyl Format: CD, 12” Packaging: Digi, Gatefold SLP: $11.99 (CD), $24.99 (12”) Barcode: 683119206022 (CD), 81159198855 (12”)

Captain Ahap / Copy split - Captain Ahab and Copy drop some straight to the dancefloor hits on Ravesploitative, an imprint of Deathbomb Arc. You'll probably recognize some of these vocals hooks from your days sitting in traffic listening to The Beat, but you've never heard them with banging beats like this. File Under: Alternative, Electro Pop; Catalog#: RAVE004 Format: 12” Packaging: 12” Jacket SLP: $16.99 Barcode: 081159198756

Child Pornography She's Got Legs - Can one grow old gracefully with a name like Child Pornography? Apparently, yes. On this 3rd full length, She’s Got Legs, the youthful perkiness that has always characterized this band is not lost. With clarity as a weapon, Child Pornography drive decisive guitar slices through epileptic beats for the most memorable autism-pop you’ve yet to hear. These guys are the Rolling Stones of YOUR generation, so get struttin. File Under: Alternative, Electro Pop; Catalog#: DBA063 Format: CD Packaging: Jewel SLP: $11.99 Barcode: 081159198763

Gang Wizard God-Time-Man Universal Continuum Calibration Disc 12" - Follow-up album to 2007's "Byzantine Headache" on Load Records. What really sets this Gang Wizard album apart is that it was recorded in an actual studio. The load album and albums on Ecstatic Peace were all recorded at home through one mic into a 4track. So, after 10 years of being a band, Gang Wizard breaks tradition. The results are a dense network of sparkling electronics, brittle guitars, and intense vocals that will surprise even the most well-listened GW fan. A landmark. File Under: Rock Catalog#: TPLP-01 Format: 12” Packaging: 12” Jacket SLP: $16.99 Barcode: 081159198732

Kevin Shields The Death Of Patience - First true full-length solo effort from Eva Aguila, aka Kevin Shields. The pieces on this release focus on various combinations of function generator, omni-chord, and a homemade mechanical device. Sheer cliffs of feedback ice, throbbing and grinding gear distortions, and angelic digital bursts slowly cancel each other out… creating additives that are neither impatient nor dead. File Under: Experimental Catalog#: DBA079 Format: CD Packaging: Jewel SLP: $11.99 Barcode: 683119203625

rRope - We Are You There - rRope never relied on blown out amps or distortion pedals that mangled their guitars into oblivion. Known for building their own amps based on old tube schematics, their guitars were meant to soar from one dimension, temporarily into ours, and then into another beyond imagining. We are very proud to present this triple LP which collects every release, from their first split 7” with VNC to their final album. In addition, the most telling live recordings have been included to help tell their story. Besides capturing rRope’s real power, these live recordings also contain songs never tracked in a studio. File Under: Alternative, Electro Pop; Catalog#: DBA070 Format: CD Packaging: Wide 12” Jacket SLP: $11.99 Barcode: 683119200822

Books On Tape Throw Down Your Laptops - For Throw Down Your Laptops, Books on Tapes recorded each track in a single take to 24-track tape, capturing the immediacy and energy of a live show with the pristine sound of a studio recording. Guest musicians include members of Bright Eyes and Slowcoach on an assortment of guitars, synths and drum machines. Todd Books played/programmed the rest - and nothing was edited in the computer. What you hear is what they did. Better listen up! File Under: Alternative, Electro Pop; Catalog#: DBA011 Format: CD Packaging: Jewel SLP: $11.99 Barcode: 634479342523

Neneh Cherry’s Blank Project is her first solo album in 16 years, produced by Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet, and featuring a guest appearance by Robyn. Neneh spent her childhood living 50/50 between a loft in New York and in the South of Sweden with her mother and stepfather, the legendary jazz musician Don Cherry. As a teen she moved to London and helped form the anarchic multi-ethnic, multi-genre band Rip, Rig + Panic. She was subsequently one of the first to bring hip-hop culture to a British audience with her worldwide solo hit “Buffalo Stance” and the Raw Like Sushi album. Through post-punk’s adherence to mixed-race line-ups and anti-government stance, to UK rap’s refusal of the conventions of pop, trip-hop’s connection with the politicized elements of rave culture and, through 1996’s Man, where she introduced elements of Senegalese language to mainstream audiences via the mammoth “7 Seconds” single featuring Youssou N'Dour, and now, with Tracklisting: Blank Project, Neneh Cherry continues to arrive at moments in musical history 01. Overview "patten’s sounds are genuinely intangible, amorphous ... [and] refreshingly non-referential” – The FADER - year new recording hiatus, out of Recently breaking a two nowhere, visionary underground producer patten dropped the surprise EP EOLIAN INSTATE via his newly announced home Warp Records. With no long lead build-up and the firm decision to limit the release to an ultra bespoke run of 500 picture discs, it was clear that patten intends to continue along his own uncompromising route, unrestrained by the formulas and common practices of the environment he finds himself operating in. A relief for existing fans and a refreshingly singular approach to discover for those finding his exquisitely atypical world for the first time. A world contiuously explored in patten’s internationally-focused Kaleidoscope imprint. In just a handful of weeks, EOLIAN INSTATE has found support from major international outlets such as The Wire Magazine, BBC Radio 1, WFMU as well as causing a stir on the digital underground amongst the hyper-aware tastemakers at FACT, Dazed, Pitchfork, The Fader, Dummy, XLR8R and countless others. An unhinged live AV set at Tate Britain for the Warp x Tate museum event and a sold out EP launch in London was followed by his US debut at NYC’s Association of Performing Arts Presenters at Joe’s Pub this January.

YELLOW OSTRICH COSMOS

bark143 CD / LP+MP3

STREET DATE: FEBRUARY 25, 2014 Before starting on songwriting for Yellow Ostrich's latest album, singer/guitarist Alex Schaaf moved into the band’s Brooklyn practice space and immersed himself in the study of such astronomers as Carl Sagan and Frank Drake. Keeping up his day job of digitizing vintage home films by day, Schaaf devoted the next 9 months to exploring the depths of the galaxy from a tiny windowless room, whose lighting he synthetically altered to reflect the arrival and passing of daylight each morning and night. Around the same time, Yellow Ostrich drummer/percussionist Michael Tapper ventured into the infinite in a much more literal sense by departing on a sailing trip from Mexico to Hawaii that left him out at sea for nearly a month. Borrowing its title from Sagan’s 1980 PBS series, Cosmos expands Yellow Ostrich’s intensely guitar-driven alt-rock with dreamy electronic arrangements to mirror the mood of Schaaf and Tapper’s retreats away from the everyday world. While the album embodies a sense of both wonder and isolation, Yellow Ostrich’s refined melodies and dense yet delicate sonic textures make Cosmos as powerfully intimate as it is dynamic.

TRACKLISTING 1. Terrors 2. Neon Fists 3. Shades 4. My Moons 5. You Are The Stars 6. In The Dark 7. Any Wonder 8. How Do You Do It 9. Things Are Fallin’ 10. Don’t Be Afraid

The follow-up to Yellow Ostrich’s 2012 EP Ghost, Cosmos captures that uneasy tension by merging raw guitar riffs, lush atmospherics, brain-bending electro effects, sweetly ethereal harmonies, and earnest but unsettling lyrics. Engineered by Beau Sorenson (Death Cab for Cutie, Superchunk, Sparklehorse) and mixed by Paul Kolderie (Radiohead, Pixies, Dinosaur Jr.), the album saw its inception when Schaaf sketched out skeletal versions of his songs, then brought them to Tapper to begin fleshing out beats and arrangements. Having delved into the work of early-Krautrock and 70’s synth bands while on tour the previous year, Schaaf and Tapper set to broadening their sound with locked grooves and textures inspired by artists like Neu!, Kluster, and Kraftwerk.

LP+MP3:

Opening Cosmos with the ominous “Terrors” and closing with the hushed, hymnlike “Don’t Be Afraid,” Yellow Ostrich lace together electronic elements and organic instrumentation to build a mood that’s sometimes gloomy, sometimes euphoric, and often an inextricable mix of the two. Throughout the album, Schaaf’s fascination with Earth and beyond plays out both literally and as metaphor: there are songs like “In the Dark” (a stark and dreamlike meditation on the journey of NASA’s Voyager 1 and 2 spacecrafts), as well as “Shades” (whose urgent guitar lines and frantic piano reflect the anxiety that Schaaf imagines many people felt upon seeing the first published photos of Earth and “realizing how small and insignificant we really are”). One of the album’s most exhilarating numbers, “Any Wonder” pairs a swirling soundscape and questioning lyrics that closely encapsulate the thematic heart of Cosmos (“I’m gonna try hard to tear it all apart/I wanna be stunned, don’t you?”). In writing “Any Wonder,” Schaaf again tapped into Carl Sagan’s careful illumination of the romantic side of science. “A lot of people have this idea that when you explain something, you take away the magic and mystery of it,” says Schaaf. “But sometimes the actual science of what happens is way more magical than any fiction we could invent on our own.”

BRANDT BRAUER FRICK There’s a common thread that runs through all of Brandt Brauer Frick’s music. It is this: interesting things happen at the interface of machine and hand-made music. The Berlin trio’s 2010 album, ‘You Make Me Real’, fused techno and classical. The 2011 follow-up, ‘Mr Machine’, saw them go the whole classical-meets-club hog with a ten-piece ensemble playing dance music live. Then, earlier this year, came ‘Miami’, a darker, more song-based collection exploring the same man-machine ideas. The Berlin trio’s instalment of the DJ-Kicks series does the same thing with a mix. Not for them the algorithmic rigidity of cutting and pasting tracks together on Ableton. They recorded the mix in one day, out of hours at Berlin’s legendary Watergate club, using only vinyl and dub plates. “We didn’t want to record it in our studio or at home, mainly because we preferred an intense session with limited time,” explains Paul Frick. “That feels more like a unique situation and it enforces the tension and the necessity to do it right. Because we mixed it live there are mistakes and flaws, some rougher transitions in there. We are not super technical DJs. We like it when you hear those imprecisions because it’s human. It feels like someone is behind the mix, rather than a computer.” After all the conceptualising, perhaps most importantly of all, the end result is that rare thing: a dancefloor mix full of emotion. Interesting things happen when humans and machines meet.

The Souljazz Orchestra return with another essential mystical odyssey in February 2014 as they release their brand new studio album, Inner Fire, on Strut. Recorded using the Orchestra’s signature analogue techniques at their studio HQ in their home city of Ottawa, the new set continues their expansive musical journey as they effortlessly fuse intricate Eastern influences, Afro beats, Egyptian jazz, Latin styles and spiritual elements into their unique musical melting pot. The secret to the band’s sound remains a true openness to global music of all kinds and the individual experiences of the Orchestra’s band members. “We all have very wide tastes, we’re always digging for new sounds, and we’ve had the chance to work with master musicians from all over, from Nigeria to Rwanda, from Cuba to Haiti, so each band member ends up bringing different vibes and ideas to each of our albums,” explains keyboardist Pierre Chrétien. On Inner Fire, the different vibes come thick and fast. Side One features “Kingdom Come,” a fierce afro-jazz stomper influenced by North-East African big band sounds, “One Life To Live,” a haunting highlife arrangement on the importance of seizing the day, “As The Crow Flies,” a soaring bossa-tinged piece and “Black Orchid,” a bumping fusion of cinematic soul-jazz with Cuban bolero sounds. The flip brings us the firing salsa dura party jam “Agoya” before the ritual chant of “East Flows The River,” a spiritual jazz hymn using Eastern modes. The tempo ramps up once more on “Sommet En Sommet,” a heavy 12/8 afro-jazz piece influenced by Guinean popular music. Percussionist Marielle Rivard then takes the lead on vocals for a scorching personal rendition of Gary Bartz NTU Troop’s 1971 classic, “Celestial Blues.” The Souljazz Orchestra have become the undisputed leaders in their field since their first album back in 2005, breaking through with the huge international hit “Mista President” on Do Right! in 2007. Since then, the band have remained tight with their original line-up of Pierre Chrétien (keyboards), Zakari Frantz (alto sax & flute), Steve Patterson (tenor sax), Ray Murray (baritone sax), Marielle Rivard (percussion) and Philippe Lafrenière (drums). With their on-stage chemistry and stellar musicianship, the Orchestra’s live shows have now become the stuff of legend, sparking instant parties wherever they play. 2013 was already a massive year for the band with their heaviest touring schedule to date. Highlights included a chaotic night playing to a sold-out crowd at New Morning in Paris, the band’s first full US tours, high profile festival slots alongside Pharoah Sanders, Stevie Wonder and Raphael Saadiq and a 12-minute live “Battle Suite” packed full of classic and original breaks and beats for the B-Boy Battle Finals at Ottawa’s annual House Of Paint hip hop festival. The band will be undertaking a Canadian tour to support the new album starting in February 2014, followed by a full European tour in March and April.

After garnering wide critical acclaim for their 2011 album Glowing Mouth, Milagres have returned with an exciting new endeavor. Violent Light, out February 25, 2014 on Kill Rock Stars, finds the band’s melodic sensibilities intact, but with rougher edges. Singer Kyle Wilson weaves together his falsetto and lower registers as seamlessly as he always has, but the songs on this album have more of a sense of urgency. With the departure of multi-instrumentalist Eric Schwortz and the addition of kinetic drummer Paul Payabab the band has become a four-piece, and this strippeddown lineup has translated to the music: the songs are somewhat more crystalline, more hard-edged than on the previous album, without losing any of the beauty. First single “The Letterbomb” is a great example of this. Wilson’s voice wanders over and through a musical landscape punctuated by Payabab’s snapping, near-funk rhythms, while found-sound voices and piano hover hauntingly in the mix. It’s a dreamy, psychedelic landscape with a solid heartbeat, no easy feat for any band. Recorded at home by the band and mixed by wunderkind Andrew Maury (Ra Ra Riot, RAC), Violent Light feels immediate and complex, challenging and welcoming at the same time. It’s exciting to think how these songs will come across live, as they really give the band – and the audience – something to sink their teeth into. Praise for Glowing Mouth: "The band's sound is something like a spiritual experience: lo-fi and heartfelt. With influences ranging from Prince to Peter Gabriel, the band could just as easily be compared to Radiohead, Grizzly Bear, or Bon Iver." - Interview Magazine "Damn...I'm speechless. That was perfection. Wow. I found my new favorite album and it's not even out until September" - John Richards, KEXP.

Three years ago, Michael Gardner sold his bass and bought a drum kit. Pierre Moore bought a cheap microphone and plugged it into a practice amp. Like their good ol’ days growing up in Jackson, Mississippi, they were playing the blues! Within weeks of forming their two-piece juke group, they met Ryan Lynn. The friendship came immediately and once Ryan picked up the bass, the music quickly followed. By combining musical elements from the genres they loved, the songs poured out in an inspired fury. Only three months after meeting, they chose the name of the folkloric slave hero, John the Conqueror, and took to the stage in Philadelphia, playing their own blend of the southern rock from their childhoods, the punk of their adolescence, and the blues and soul they had always held closely. Entirely written by Pierre Moore, with the exception of a notable cover (“Let’s Burn Down The Cornfield”), “The Good Life” is the follow up to the band’s self-titled debut album released in 2012 on Alive. It is a collection of vignettes from Pierre’s childhood in Mississippi and tales of his life in the streets of a Philly project, where the three friends currently live.

GENRE : ROCK/COUNTRY FILE UNDER : “S” Speer, D. Charles & the Helix RELEASE DATE : February 25, 2014 Dave Charles Shuford (aka D. Charles Speer) grew up in Georgia, absorbing the culture and history of the American South before moving to New York in the early 90s. He quickly fell in with the experimental rock underground that has long been an undercurrent of that city’s defining spirit, most notably as a member of the long-running No Neck Blues Band. The loose and free country rock boogie of Speer’s work with the Helix derives power from the tension between these two aspects of his personality, the traditional and the exploratory. With Speer joined once again by Hans Chew (keys), Marc Orleans (pedal steel), Ted Robinson (bass), and Steve McGuirl (drums), Doubled Exposure, is their most stylistically varied yet consistent work to date, offering a full mélange of what Speer and his band have to offer. Doubled Exposure touches on many aspects of Speer’s musical menagerie, enhancing his ramblin’ tunes with the blistering psych he has explored with Rhyton to the traditional Greek melodies he delved into on Arghiledes (Thrill 263). In the propulsive “Cretan Lords,” Speer enhances a sweeping modal blues with the bouzouki and baglamas, lending a distinctively Mediterranean flavor to rich, tremoloed stew. The ten-minute epic “Mandorla at Dawn,” achieves an incredibly dense psychedelic swirl using a stereo amp rig and live looping, a first for Speer’s studio work. The album culminates with the exuberant “Tough Soup,” with chants echoing along to the rough and tumble boogie. Speer augments the expert, eclectic musicianship of his band with a remarkable lyrical prowess, which he delivers in his trademark deadpan drawl. His rich imagistic tales take three forms throughout the album: heart songs, which are based on personal experience and emotion; visionary songs, which incorporate surrealist language and beat poetics; and research songs, which see Shuford reimagining and incorporating historical events.

GENRE : ROCK FILE UNDER: “Z” Zedek, Thalia “C” Come RELEASE DATE : February 25, 2014

NO EXPORT TO EUROPE, AUSTRALIA, CANADA

EXPORTABLE TO JAPAN

TRACK LISTING: 2013 was a notable year for Thalia Zedek. She released her first album in five years, Via, which PopMatters called a “rumbling, sweet, muscled set of tunes, as resilient as they are beautiful,” which was followed by a tour across North America with Low. She also reunited with Come, the classic band she formed with Chris Brokaw in 1990, reissuing their classic debut Eleven:Eleven and playing their first shows in over a decade across the US and Europe. In October, following this intense flurry of activity, Thalia regrouped with her band in Boston to record an EP, harnessing the creative energy she had accumulated during her time on the road. The resulting SIX opens with a full-band version of “Fell So Hard,” a characteristically mournful dirge that exudes a tenacious, slowmoving intensity. From there, Zedek explores the complexities of interpersonal relationships, employing some of the most sparse arrangements of her career. The spareness of tracks like “Julie Said” and “Afloat” achieve incredible emotional heft, letting Thalia’s lyrics, delivered in her unmistakable voice, take center stage. Alongside this new material is a cover of Freakwater’s “Flat Hand,” which was originally released on the Plum 7” box set in 2007. SIX is being released in advance of Thalia’s most extensive European tour in six years, and will be released in limited quantities on CD and 12” vinyl. SALES POINTS SIX is a brand new 29 minute mini-album following Zedek’s 2013 album Via that was praised by Pitchfork, Spin, PopMatters, Paste, American Songwriter, Magnet, and Under the Radar Zedek’s band features David Michael Curry (Willard Grant Conspiracy), Mel Lederman (Victory at Sea), Winston Braman (Come), and Dave Bryson (Son Volt) Thalia Zedek has been a been a seminal figure in the independent music scene for over 30 years as a member of Live Skull, Uzi, and Come CD packaged in 4 panel mini-LP style gatefold package. “Zedek specializes in thorny songs that unflinchingly address adult topics and full-grown problems, with the malleable backing of her guitar and band providing either momentary refuge or sympathetic cries of exasperation.” - Pitchfork “Over jangling guitar and a weeping violin, Zedek sings like Bob Dylan fronting a late ‘80s college radio outfit, documenting a friend or lover’s painful egress in gripping detail.” - Spin “Continuing to push limits like she did during the ‘80s and ‘90s in bands like Uzi, Live Skull, and Come, Zedek has come up with something that’s as vital and powerful as anything she’s done in her career with her latest album, Via.” - Pop Matters

Cloud Becomes Your Hand Rocks Or Cakes

“The kaleidoscopic music of Cloud Becomes Your Hand can go from tribal to medieval to cacophonous in a single piece. With brilliant melodies, blippy video-game sounds, and Syd Barrett-esque lyrics, Cloud Becomes Your Hand feels like a joyful journey through a strange land.”- The New Yorker The spirit of discovery has made heroes of mountain climbers and deep sea divers. We rally around it with undaunted belief that one day aliens will be our best friends, if we can just push deep enough into space. Cloud Becomes Your Hand reminds us that this magic of new worlds isn’t just on the edges of civilization; it is all around us. Like a children’s show on PBS, depicting urban life with a frenetic jazz of togetherness and purpose, theirs is the sound of exploring your own city. It is the sound of meeting all the surprising people around you. Surrealism, Dada, psychedelia; these are just fancy words to describe the simple thing this group has done. They’ve collected a bunch of exciting sounds and tied them together with the exclamation, “We’re all here, living these wild lives with each other!” It is sentiment explaining the joy and wonder in a child’s eyes. A sentiment Cloud Becomes Your Hand reminds us is for everyone, forever.

Dva Nipomo

Operating in their own microcosm, DVA have stood out with an idiosyncratic sonic lexicon – “pop for non-existing radios” or “folklore of non-existing nations”, as they say. The duo – it takes two “dva” in Czech, to tango - Bára Kratochvílová and Jan Kratochvíl, have carved out a niche with their rich musical landscape. Established in 2006, the Czech project have toured the world, playing at esteemed festivals including SXSW, Eurosonic, Fusion, Incubate or OFF charming their growing global fanbase with smart sophisticated pop. In 2012, DVA toured the US twice and played more than 80 concerts in 10 countries. DVA’s soundtrack for the computer game Botanicula scooped the main prize at Independent Games Festival awards in San Francisco last year, and was also nominated for the UK Sound & Music Awards. DVA’s much-acclaimed debut album Fonók was released in 2008 which was followed by Hu in 2010, and an eponymous soundtrack for the aforementioned video game in 2013 with a new record in the works. Their lyrics, written in an imaginary language, remain abstruse, yet universally comprehensible, while the music is similarly peculiarly universal – an aural collage of “pop, kitchen beatbox, tango, cabaret, circus, radio noise”, bearing their unmistakable stamp - quirky, but accessible. Championed by critics - from the BBC to national and specialist music press and beyond - and fans alike, DVA are one of the most successful Czech bands to emerge in the last decade. Aside from music, they are also active in theatre whose features they have transferred into the music as well. It is not surprising then that the project’s seeds were sewn during the recording of the science fiction radio play by I. Asimov – Victory Unintentional. DVA are a living and breathing aural organism, its own thing. Tracklisting: 1. Nipomo - 4:25 2. Mulatu - 3:42 3. No survi - 2:34 4. Surfi - 3:32 5. Nunki - 3:26 6. Zoppe - 3:44 7. Meteor - 3:21 8. ROCK CANDY REISSUES - $20.99 EACH - 25 FEBRUARY REMASTERED WITH BONUS TRACKS, EXTENSIVE BOOKLETS WITH ESSAYS,

INTERVIEWS AND RARE PHOTOS. JEWEL CASE.

KINGS X OUT OF THE SILENT PLANET CANDY232 5055300379948 ‘Out Of The Silent Planet’ is one of the finest hard rock albums of the period. It is a record that pretty much laid the foundations for the coming onslaught of grunge, a style that introduced detuned guitar work by the bucket load and basked in thick muscular riffs of the type that would soon be appropriated by future stars such as Alice In Chains and Stone Temple Pilots. From 1988, the album was stuffed with extraordinary tunes each with a lyrical twist that indicated that they were communicating on a far deeper level than what might have been expected from such a robust and bruising outfit. Check out tracks such as ‘Shot Of Love’, ‘Goldilox’ and the classic ‘King’ with its haunting refrain and unnerving defiance. AMBROSIA ONE EIGHTY CANDY239 50553300379900 Issued in 1980 on Warners ‘One Eighty’ was the band’s fourth album and is now regarded as the high point of their AOR period. The album benefits hugely from two US top twenty hit singles, ‘You’re The Only Woman’ and ‘Biggest Part Of Me’; both of which showcase front man David Pack’s world class voice, while tracks such as ‘Ready’, ‘Shape I’m In’, and the anthemic guitar driven ‘Rock ‘N A Hard Place’ position the band firmly at the epicentre of a some serious and powerful hard rock. From 1982, Ambrosia’s fifth album in many ways saw them returning to their progressive roots composing songs blessed with ambitious arrangements. In part emphasised by their choice of producer, Pink Floyd engineer James Gutherie. In addition, the album artwork’s illustrative calligraphy by Ralph Steadman was somewhat reminiscent of Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’, further emphasising their progressive rock roots. The album contains lashings of intelligently conceived tracks, such as ‘For Openers ’ and the seven minute epic ‘Ice Age’. Other more traditional sounding melodic rock tracks included ‘Still Not Satisfied’ and the Fleetwood Mac-esque ‘How Can You Love Me’ . For Openers (Welcome Home); Still Not Satisfied; Kid No More; Feelin’ Alive Again; How Can You Love Me; Fool Like Me; Ice Age; Endings

With a successful independent EP eliciting a tsunami of label interest, Ratt signed with Atlantic and were put in the studio with rising production star Beau Hill (later to work with Winger, Warrant, Gary Moore) to record their debut album. Issued in 1984, the results were spectacular; a record that became a three million seller and produced two hit singles in ‘Wanted Man’ and ‘Round And Round’, elevating the band to headline status almost immediately. The secret to Ratt’s success was a unique sound, great songs and great performances – especially from guitarist Warren DeMartini and vocalist Stephen Pearcy. Full of energy, unabashed enthusiasm, musical dexterity and hooks that were instantly embedded in the nation’s conscience; this was a band that took no prisoners in their rise to success. The band continued to rack-up further platinum awards with “Invasion Of Your Privacy” , the follow up to “Out Of The Cellar” and played sold out arena concerts before going back into the studio to record ‘Dancing Under Cover’. It was a testing time for the band, relationships were strained and cracks began to show. They had barely taken their foot of the gas pedal since recording their debut album and those close to the situation were concerned that such fast paced activity was having a detrimental effect. It’s a minor miracle then that this album maintained such impressive quality. Produced, to pin point accuracy, by long-time associate Beau Hill (Winger, Kix, Warrant), the album contains a fine selection of songs in the finest Ratt tradition. Known for her prolific songwriting and soundcloud posting Rose KeelerSchffelers debut album features eighteen powerfully but economically packed tracks, cherry picked from her vast repertoire. Keel Hers songs are intimate vignettes drawn from Roses own experiences delivered in a chatty, honest and delightfully conversational manner. Guitars and synths vie for melodic prominence over vast swathes of fuzz and feedback, where Roses indecipherable vocals swim amongst buzzing melodies, swampy reverb and broken beats. Although much of her sound and aesthetic harks back to 90s slacker culture, the variety of styles she has absorbed makes it harder to specifically pinpoint her sound. Veering sonically from Beat Happening to Ariel Pink, Wavves to Bikini Kill, Real Estate to Guided By Voices and all the way back again, it wasnt long before her bedroom pop reached the ears of home recording supremo R. Stevie Moore. The R Stevie Moore collaboration started when Rose wrote a song for him called Robert. He was won over and they recorded the double A-side single Boner Hit/With Me Tonight. Rose invited Moore to remix the album track I’d Be Your Slave, which also sees him playing bass. Having grown up in Winchester, Rose Keeler-Schffeler began writing and recording in her bedroom at an early age and for over a year posted tracks online at an alarming rate. Now residing in Brighton, she remains blissfully unconcerned with glossy production values, clichd lyrics and formulaic hooks and instead taps in to seemingly bottomless well of creativity on her own terms. 1. Nick McCarthy of Franz Ferdinand and Mark Ralph (who works with Hot Chip) provided additional production. The Chicago songs, which form the heart of the album, were recorded all-analogue at John McEntire's (Tortoise) Soma Studios. Engineered by Bill Skibbe (The Kills/Franz Ferdinand). It also includes 3 specially commissioned orchestral works: Work No. 955 was originally written for the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Work No. 994 was composed for the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra and Work No. 1375 was commissioned by the The London Sinfonietta. Martin has released one previous album, Love To You (Moshi Moshi) in 2012. Martin Creed was born in 1968 in Wakefield, England and was brought up in Glasgow. He studied at the Slade School of Art, London from 1986-1990. His work has been exhibited internationally and is represented in collections including Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Moscow Museum of Modern Art; The Centre Pompidou–Metz, France; Tate, London.

Where I Come From Nervous Cheerleader

Written over a summer of endless bleary-eyed bouts of insomnia, the first few Menace Beach tracks captured the zero attention span and spontaneous, weird-out nature of a couple of minds totally zoned-in to a fuzz pedal and a cassette recorder in the dead of night. After several un-treated breakdowns and a subsequent rash decision to relocate to Leeds, Ryan and Liza shacked up with MJ (Hookworms) to re-imagine their crackly 8track demos. Joining them on the session, were friends Nestor Matthews (Sky Larkin) Matt Spalding, and Robert Lee (Pulled Apart By Horses) who fought their way through Liza’s rats nest of cables and home-made synth modules to blast through the songs during another all-nighter, having so much fun in the process that they all decided to stick around. The Menace Beach vortex has amazingly also recently sucked in Paul Draper of Mansun who performed with them on their Marc Riley session for BBC 6 Music. Ryan says of the new EP : “If, lyrically, the first load of songs we did were a document of losing it again, being ill, moving cities, and all that comes with that, then I guess the songs on Lowtalker are about the aftermath of that; getting better, making friends and trying to reconnect mentally and spiritually. I feel like there’s a lot of positivity on there”. Lowtalker was recorded, produced and mixed with MJ at his Suburban Home studios in Leeds over four pizza, coffee and falafel fuelled days. The result is a kaleidoscopic vision of fuzzed out, psych-y pop exemplified by key tracks Fortune Teller and Where I Come From.

It started with Chicago. Then, Manchester. For nearly three decades, Laurent Garnier has urged himself to create on the cutting edge of dance music. Beyond the turntables and studio, Garnier moves between genres and performance techniques with the aim of continuously challenging himself. Pick any moment from his musical journey, and it's easy to see this creative momentum: there was the Hacienda in the late '80s, his time spent in America exploring house, the techno of his label F Communications and his entry into the realm of jazz. "I never want to be an old artist playing my old tracks just to please the older crowd," he says. "I don't think that's healthy." (RA) Laurent Garnier is now an undeniable force that is making the planet dance. Last summer (2013) Laurent Garnier met with Jerome Derradji over dinner before his long awaited return at the decks in Chicago for SmartBar. Longtime friends, Laurent and Jerome talked about the possibility of releasing some of his new productions under the name Garnier. A new venture for the veteran Dj and producer, that will see him release a series of 12”s for labels such as 50 Weapons and more…. “AF 0490” is the first release in the series and showcases Garnier at his best. Three tracks that pay their respect to the heroes of Trax, Dancemania and to the Chicago sound they helped create without any misplaced nostalgia. “Bang (The Underground Doesn’t Stop)” is a dancefloor anthem, magnificent and pure Chicago circa 1998. “Boom (Chakolak)” takes you way back to the Southside with its gritty “footwork” 909 kicks, snares and vocal loops, massive! “Beat (Da BoxX) is a pure Garnier, Dancemania inspired techno monster. The loop is finally complete, Garnier can now hop on flight AF 0490 direct from Paris to Chicago to Bang The Box once more. Tell your friends, 2014 looks like it’s going to be the year of the Garnier.
