sarah lee guthrie johnny irion wassaic way Beloved duo Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion will release their third studio album together Wassaic Way on August 6 via Route 8 Records. Produced by Jeff Tweedy and Patrick Sansone of Wilco, the album's eleven original songs were recorded at that band's famed Chicago studio, The Loft and feature the duo's most ambitious songwriting, far-‐reaching arrangements and electrifying performances to date. "It's a departure from being 'a folk duo,'" Irion says. "It's the first time we've taken our time with a record and really gotten it right." Featuring Sarah Lee and Johnny on vocals, guitars and keys, the pair are backed on the album by Tweedy on guitar and vocals, Sansone on bass, mellotron and more, Charlie Rose on guitar, pedal steel, banjo, trumpet and more, Otto Hauser on drums, Jon Stirratt on vocals, Radoslav Lorkavic on piano, Spencer Tweedy on drums and Jocie Adams on clarinet. Additionally Jeff Tweedy co-‐wrote one song on the album with Irion, "Probably Gone." Wassaic Way marks the latest entry in the ongoing creative relationship between the Guthrie family and Wilco. Sarah Lee is the daughter of Arlo Guthrie, and granddaughter of iconic folk singer Woody Guthrie, whose unfinished songs Wilco famously recorded with Billy Bragg on a pair of Mermaid Avenue albums in 1998 and 2000.

For RocketNumberNine, capturing the spirit of the music is paramount and with their debut album, MeYouWeYou, the London-based Page brothers -Tom (drums) and Ben (synths) -- invite you into their tribal Chingford roots, taking music forwards to reach where it came from. This is hard hitting, modern dance music played live without a single click track in sight. With a name taken from a song by space jazz crusader Sun Ra and musical influences from Detroit to London to Africa and beyond, RocketNumberNine, have spent the last eight years shaping, breaking and squeezing their sound into what it is today.

Before we get to today, let’s revisit the musical journey that got them here. While working with legendary drummer Steve Reid, Tom met Kieran Hebden (aka Four Tet) resulting in the band going on a short tour with Four Tet. By the end of this run, Kieran decided he must produce and release the bands 14 minute “Matthew & Toby” via his TEXT label. It was recorded and mixed in a day without so much as a sniff of a computer -- a refreshing approach from the producer renowned for his electronic productions! This kickstarted a new era for RocketNumberNine as it saw them moving away from improvisation and condensing their electronic dance punk jazz mash up into bite sized chunks. Soon after, an early live collaboration with Four Tet and RocketNumberNine caught the attention of Thom Yorke who invited them to open for Radiohead at The Roseland Ballroom in New York in late 2011. At those shows, material started to take shape for what would later become the first collaborative release from RocketNumberNine and Four Tet, the ”Roseland/Metropolis” 12” (TEXT023). This brings us to the present. The new TEXT release has hit, rumors are floating of a new collaboration with the enigmatic Miss Neneh Chery, and, a long time coming, on August 6, 2013, their debut full-length, MeYouWeYou, is finally going to be released by Smalltown Supersound. 2013 appears to be the year RocketNumberNine crosses out of the shadows surrounding the darkest of live dance music over into the light that is the infamy of wider adulation. Thom Yorke, Four Tet, Gilles Peterson and Caribou can’t all be wrong!

Raffertie has crafted a debut album with the clearest and most fruitful of purposes; to remind the listener that they are not alone. That's something that most people to whom music is very important will recognise - we all discovered albums in our youth that spoke directly to us, or so it seemed. It's a rather noble sentiment, and one that's resulted in a stunning debut album, 'Sleep of Reason.' 'I wanted to create an album listeners could empathise with,' Raffertie, AKA Benjamin Stefanski, says. 'Albums I listened to and connected with most when growing up, and indeed still now, were those that made me feel like I wasn't alone. That perhaps sounds quite sad, but that whole process of connection was ultimately what I felt drawing me into a lot of music. Catharsis, it seems to me, is the universal backbone of music. It's a process of coming to terms with our relative daemons.' It's an eloquent statement for an equally eloquent album. 'Sleep of Reason' is rich, enigmatic and full of yearning, evocative audio paintings. Album opener 'Undertow' sets out the record's intentions gloriously, its Berlin-eraBowie sonics, electronic textures and explorative melody evoking a powerful mood that draws the listener in entirely. 'Sleep of Reason' is strongly informed by Stefanski's childhood in a British seaside town, the faded grandeur and aging population of which caused him to ruminate on mortality as a child. 'Parts of this album are about letting go of the worry of when something might happen, and instead embracing now.' That statement goes some way to explaining the beguiling, addictive urgency of the album. The driving drums and startling melody of ‘Gagging Order’ reveal exactly why Raffertie has been hotly tipped by luminaries like Annie Mac and Huw Stephens. Those two DJs sit at either end of a wide axis that Raffertie straddles effortlessly. He’s made his most confident music to date for ‘Sleep of Reason,’ and there’s a sense here of a young master at work. There are few musicians out there capable of making a song like ‘Touching,’ which is about as deep as a song you can dance to gets. Stefanski’s vocals – showcased powerfully on single ‘Build Me Up’ are a perfect compliment to his production. Lyrically minimal, they often centre around single, striking images, making them seem like incantations perfectly wedded to the music’s mood and mental subject matter. ‘Last Train Home’s’ ominous, glacial synths and verge-of-panic drums combine with a pulsing bass and emerging arpeggio to stunning effect. The song’s vocal is full of urgency, and there’s something edge-of-the-seat about it that’s truly extraordinary. All this comes after several years as one of electronic music's most hardworking pioneers. Having set up his own label, Super, and discovered and released AlunaGeorge amongst others, he's also remixed Franz Ferdinand, Wolf Gang, Wild Beasts, Clock Opera and of course AlunaGeorge themselves. This is an artist with a love for the scene he's working in, and someone who wants to champion the other artists within it. Like all the best albums, ‘Sleep of Reason’ demands to be listened to in full, to allow its themes, moods and textures to fully emerge and take grip. It’s also full of brilliant standalone songs. Listen to it how you will, but do listen – you won’t be disappointed.

Sun Ra once spoke a future where the mere thought of a place would take somebody there. In the past future of today, Ras_G explores space and time through his ancient/futuristic music. Dusty, ethereal and bugged out, the Crate Creator's beats bring the past to the future. "Back On The Planet," _G's first Brainfeeder release in years, finds the blunted master of the beat guiding his Afrikan Space Program further out than ever. Since his arrival on the planet, Ras_G has called Los Angeles his base. Growing in south central, _G was tapping into his innate knowledge while having the earthly experience of living in the "ghetto." Gravitating towards the turntables early _G spent formative years DJing spots like Project Blowed and Five On The Black Hand Side in Leimert Park until his cousin Wolverine introduced him to the SP-1200 and thoughts of production became realities. Equally informed by the looped-up dust of classic boom-bap and the avantgarde esotericism of free jazz, _G began paving his own path in the beats. He cut his teeth in the early days of Low End Theory and in precursor nights like JuJu and Sketchbook. Day long hangouts at record spots like Aaron's (RIP) and Poo Bahs laid the foundation for projects, live experimentations and new experiences. A key pillar in the Los Angeles community, _G is the power-forward of the Brainfeeder crew, down since day one. After amassing a sizable discography of 7"'s, EP's and digital releases on a host of platforms, Ras_G & The Alkebulan Space Program are BACK ON THE PLANET for their most complete demonstration to date. The countless nights at SpaceBase behind the MPC and SP-303 have seen _G come fully into his own. On this project past experiments in chest-rattling bass, terse loops and bugged-out field noise come full circle. Ancient Afrikan poly-drum rhythms meet outer-synth splashes of white noise and intuitive experimentation meld with deep sub-harmonics for an otherworldly experience. "Asteroid Storm" captures the pulsating energy of The ASP's live demonstrations while "Natural Melanin Being" finds _G's Uncle Ra sharing a few words of wisdom that go very well with the therapeutic tones of the meditative "All Is Well." "Back On The Planet" is The ASP at it's most confident, shedding all barriers for an open and honest manifestation. Drawing from a source beyond the ego and dealing with the eternal, Ras_G & The Ancient Space Program are a cosmic outfit, eternally elsewhere but always in tune. There were plenty of reasons for Londoner James Mathé to simply keep course after the release of his well received debut album, Chemical Campfires in 2008 on Fence Records: a flourishing reputation as one of Britain's most exciting acoustic troubadours, a prominent spot in Jose Gonzales' backing bands, the roar of applause from the audience at a sold-out show at New York's Bowery Ballroom still ringing in his ears. But Mathé had other ideas. “I loved the acoustic scene, but knew it was not all I was about,” he remembers. “So I dug out all my old Casiotone keyboards, drum machines and analogue synths and just started writing.” Bloodlines, then, is a compelling reinvention and sees Mathé’s emotive missives from young adulthood rewired into elegiac electronic anthems, dusted with huge spectral gasps of reverb and soulwrenching organ melodies. From the sultry ache of opener Bloodline – a nod to Massive Attack's Unfinished Sympathy “about not picking up the bad habits of the generation before you”, says Mathé – to the Pharrell Williams-inspired urban crunch of ‘Turbine’, all the way to ‘The Load’, written when Mathé was indulging in his love of Jurassic 5 era 90s hip hop, Bloodlines is a brilliantly varied listen that pulls and paws at your heartstrings. Recently signed to iconic London label Memphis Industries (Field Music, POLIÇA, The Go! Team), Mathé is influenced by everything from soul men Stevie Wonder, D'Angelo and Levon Helm to Dirty Projectors and Sufjan Stevens but points to one inspiration in particular for the overall mood of Bloodlines – Vincent Gallo’s cult '90s film Buffalo 66, a twisted romance about a tap dancer who falls for her convict kidnapper – “the end scene which features Yes's Heart of the Sunrise and the scene with Cristina Ricci dancing to King Crimson’s Moonshine at a bowling hall especially,” he notes. Barbarossa is touring with Junip in May/June and will be returning for more live dates in the Summer / Fall. MUTAZIONE ITALIAN ELECTRONIC & NEW WAVE UNDERGROUND 1980 - 1988 “Are you nervous as you like to be?” Die Form, ‘Are You Before’ In Italy, they are known as the Anni di Piombo, the ‘Years Of Lead’, a period of unprecedented political turmoil between the late ‘60s and early ‘80s across the country. Sparked following an attempt to merge the neo-fascist Italian Social Movement (MSI) into the ruling Tambroni government and a subsequent coalition between the Christian Democrats (DC) and the Socialist Party, nearly 2000 murders were attributed to political violence during this dark period in the form of bombings, assassinations and street warfare between rival militant factions, including the high profile murder of DC leader Aldo Moro in 1978. Kompakt artist Alessio Natalizia from Walls brings together ‘Mutazione’, a collection of reactionary underground electronic and new wave rarities from Italy, recorded during the tail end of this turbulent era. Based around a hotbed of activism in Tuscany and the Emilio Romagna region, bands emerged from squats and both right and left wing militant groups, feeding off the national paranoia and angst to create a unique sound, rooted in punk but touching on new wave, electronic, experimental and industrial styles. Much of the music was released on limited cassettes. Fanzines sprang up, both from political groups and the bands themselves, in turn spawning new artists – Suicide Dada, featured on this album, emerged from a collective running the VM fanzine in Turin and the Traxxtra collective of underground musicians also published a regular lo-fi magazine of their own. For ‘Mutazione’, Natalizia digs deep to explore the full spectrum of sounds from this rich era of Italian music. Styles range from brooding new wave and post-punk to raw electronic pieces and claustrophobic, whispered vocal cuts. There are stories aplenty behind many of the tracks: Laxative Souls’ chilling ‘Niccolai’ samples a telephone call made by infamous terrorist group Brigate Rosse to Aldo Moro’s lawyer, explaining where he could find the politician’s body. Kirlian Camera’s ‘Edges’ is an early single from one of the few underground Italian new wave to land a major label deal and Doris Norton’s ‘Norton Apple Software’ is culled from an all-electronic instrumental album sponsored by Apple during their early days in 1984. This exclusive release comes with extensive sleeve notes by two of Italy’s leading cultural journalists, Andrea Pomini and Alberto Campo, both now of Rumore magazine. The package also features a wealth of original photos alongside artwork from fanzines, cassettes and LP covers.
KEY POINTS - First definitive compilation of underground Italian new wave scene from 1980s - Powerful soundtrack to turbulent political backdrop in Italy during early '80s - Features over 20 previously unreissued tracks - Package full of rare artwork from fanzines, cassettes, posters and LPs + sleeve notes by leading Italian journalists Andrea Pomini and Alberto Campo - Another essential package in Strut's catalogue of post-punk, new wave & early electronic releases following 'Fac. Then singer and creative force, Chris Olley preferred to shunned the limelight until in 2011 he formed a drummerless version of Six By Seven. Gigs followed and so did five singles and an album. After a chance meeting in London, Olley found himself having a beer with ex Placebo / Boo Radleys drummer Steve Hewitt. What followed was four months of rehearsing songs Olley had written over the previous five years, nine of which became this new album. This is arguably their most accomplished album. Instead I wanted to piece together unrelated sounds, music samples, rhythms and ‘events’ in an attempt to deviate from my own trappings as a musician.” Tim Elsenburg, Anja Garbarek Thomas Feiner of Anywhen, David Sylvian, Nina Kinert and Joan Wasser provide vocals . 01/ Grip 02/ Sleepyard 03/ Cancelled Pieces 04/ December Train 05/ Sow The Salt 06/ Gap Of Cloud 07/ Playground Martyrs 08/ A Way Of Disappearing 09/ Ballad Of A Deadman 10/ Conversation Over 11/ Life Moves On 12/ Playground Martyrs (Reprise)

A hellish amalgam of the hook laden rolling stoner grooves of QOTSA and Red Fang, mashed with a mighty thump of heaviness, then put through a psychedelic mangle. Fully remastered, 12 page full colour booklet – 3,000 word essay, enhanced artwork, memorabilia, rare photos and full involvement from Stan Bush. Making the AOR scene in the early 80s, Stan’s reputation was high, with many naming him as one to watch. His debut solo album garnered healthy critical acclaim, even if it did not have the sales to match the hype. In 1987 Stan signed to the Scotti Brothers label under the handle of Stan Bush & Barrage. Produced by veteran Richie Wise and utilising a number of key session players (dubbed Barrage) including members of Black Rose, John Parr’s Band, Foreigner and Rick Springfield’s band, the music was superbly executed melodic rock sitting atop raunchy guitar work and beefy drum ‘n bass. ‘The Touch’, from this album was included in the soundtrack to the movie ‘Transformers’. Temptation; Love Don’t Lie; Primitive Lover; Heart Vs Head; Crank That Radio; Gates Of Paradise; Do You Remember; Take It Like A Man; The Touch; What Is Love

Originally issued in 1982, “Eden’s Gate” is a stunning example of melodic hard rock, with a panoramic lustre . With musicians including guitarist Earl Slick and drummer Frankie Banalli the album is loaded with widescreen triumphant epics such as ‘Dogs Of War’, ‘Edge Of Madness’ and the title track itself. “If Little Richard had written this, he’d still be boasting about it today” **** Mojo Magazine, September 2008 “This extraordinary debut... The JJR positively redefine raw, untamed, born-with-a-tail rock ‘n’ roll” 8/10, Classic Rock Magazine, September 2008 The Jim Jones Revue eponymous debut album exploded into the UK music scene in 2008 sounding like a car crash between Little Richard and The MC5. The raw, supercharged rock’n’roll played by The London quintet was inspired by The Killer, The Georgia Peach and of course The Memphis Flash and the deranged sons of Detroit. The Jim Jones Revue strip rock’n’roll back to its essential elements and this album is a document of their base alchemy. Recorded live (no overdubs!) on four track in one straight 48 hour session the record is a celebration of no holds barred full on rocking. Princess and The Frog kicks off the album and blasts out of the speakers like a rock’n’roll atom bomb explosion taking the traditional Grimms fairy tale and spinning it on its head with an injection of filthy sleaze. Among an album of hard rocking delights other key tracks to dip into are Rock’n’Roll Psychosis which sounds like a unholy jam between Jerry Lee Lewis and The Birthday Party. More carnal bump and grind with Cement Mixer the final track of the album. For this The ‘Revue step back in speed but increase the power with Mortimer unleashing a hurricane of Hammond keys while Jones intones “Here we go, nice and slow...” A soundtrack for a filthy liaison in a Latin seaport when your boat has already left... In a former life Jim Jones was the prime mover in nineties garage punk legends Thee Hypnotics (RIP). Long after Thee Hypnotics had split and his latest project Black Moses had crashed & burned, Jim then hooked up with four London hoodlums and together they became The Jim Jones Revue and set about stripping rock’n’roll right back down to the bone .

“The greatest rock ‘n’ roll band in the world right now” Phil Alexander, MOJO Burning Your House Down was the breakthrough album that launched The Jim Jones Revue from their hometown of London into the world. Produced by Jim Sclavunos (of Nick Cave &The Bad Seeds/Grinderman), Burning Your House Down captures the roar of an untamed band at the top of their game. With the microphone shredding wail of the incomparable Jim Jones at the helm, fearlessly spurred by Rupert Orton’s six-string maelstrom, Elliot Mortimer’s savaged ivories and the jackhammer rhythm section of drummer Nick Jones and bassist Gavin Jay, The Jim Jones Revue swing like a giant ball and chain. In the wake of the release of Burning Your House Down, The Jim Jones Revue swiftly progressed from their earliest shows in the dive bars of East London to staking their claim as an unstoppable force across the world. A breath-taking performance of the album’s lead single High Horse on The Late Show with David Letterman led the host to declare “No more phone calls, we have a winner!” Since the day The JJR were first featured on BBC national radio and star UK DJ Steve Lamacq announce “I think I may have something here” and proceeded to play tracks from the band's eponymous debut album, The Jim Jones Revue juggernaut has not looked back. Burning Your House Down has redefined rock’n’roll for the 21st century!
