Nick Lowe Labour Of Lust
NATIONAL release date: CD/lp: 03.15.2011 As the bassist and primary songwriter for Brinsley Schwarz, Lowe was one of the catalysts of the pub rock phenomenon in the early 1970s. As the co-founder and house producer at Stiff Records, he would help create the blueprint for the modern indie rock label and usher in British punk and new wave, helming historic recordings for The Damned, Elvis Costello, and The Pretenders. Here, his landmark second solo album Labour of Lust gets the deluxe reissue treatment, sporting an expanded 12pg. booklet with period photos, new essays and artwork by groundbreaking graphic artist Barney Bubbles. The reissue also includes Nick’s biggest US hit “Cruel To Be Kind,” the originally U.K.- only “Endless Grey Ribbon” and U.S.only “American Squirm” plus bonus B-side “Basing Street.” LOL is the only of Lowe’s solo albums to hold the distinction of featuring Nick’s Rockpile cohorts Dave Edmunds, Billy Bremner and Terry Williams on every track. Originally released in 1979 and out of print for nearly twenty years, the album has been remastered from the original source, reintroducing this masterpiece to a new generation of pop music obsessives. KEY FACTS: • Long awaited reissue of the 1979 album featuring Nick Lowe’s greatest pop hit “Cruel To Be Kind” • LP in print for the first time in over 30 years with the CD returning after a 20-year hiatus • Tracklist combines songs from US and UK versions plus a bonus track “Basing Street” for a 13-track release over the original 11 • CD and LP packages feature 12-page booklet of sleeve notes, credits, and rare shots with the LP including a reproduction of the orginial “Cracking Up” poster REtail: We will be doing targeted marketing in key markets across the nation. Marketing funds are available for key indies and regional chain programs. In-store play copies, promo items, and posters are available, as well as video widgets and banners to place on retail websites and eblasts: contact your sales rep or or mike@yeproc.com. Radio: We will service this digitally to all of Triple A, CMJ and Alt. Specialty. Nick has a great history in a number of genres of radio, and they will be glad to spin this re-issue. Historically big fans of Nick Lowe will be priority targets in addition to past supporters of Quiet Please. Press: We are working with Shore Fire Media to pitch this album. The 1979 BBC Documentary “Born Fighters” along with photos from the period will aid our efforts to secure coverage. Video: We will service a roughly 30-second teaser clip to reintroduce the album to writers, retailers, and consumers. The short features a mysterious man walking down a dark, dank street and enters a bar. After a drink he heads into a private, back room to meet with a mob boss and acquire the original tapes for Labour Of Lust. “Cracking Up” provides the soundtrack. KEY MARKETS: Los Angeles, CA; SF-Okland-San Jose; New York, NY; Seattle-Tacoma,WA; Chicago, IL; Boston, MA TRACK LISTING: 01. Cruel To Be Kind 02. Cracking Up 03. Big Kick, Plain Scrap 04. The Death Set’s new album, “Michel Poiccard,” comes prefigured by tragedy. For their first record "Worldwide", the core of the group had been the two Aussie ex-pats who moved together to Baltimore in the early noughties – Beau Velasco and Johnny Siera. Just as the pair were about to embark on writing a new album together,Velasco, who had struggled with drug addiction on and off throughout his life, died of an overdose. The band were shattered, so much so that Johnny still finds it almost impossible to talk about. It wouldn’t have been surprising if the group had decided to call it a day. Instead, Johnny Siera, with long time band members Daniel Walker and Jahphet Landis decided to make the record a celebration of Velasco’s life. Relocating to Brooklyn and enlisting long time friend and Baltimore associate XXXchange (Spank Rock, Kele, The Kills) to man the desk, they created “Michel Poiccard,” an album which loses none of the charm of their previous “punk spazz” work but adds considerable depth, both in terms of the punch and bottom end that XXXchange brings to the table, and in terms of a sense of desperate loss or longing, which permeates everything on the record and reaches a considerable pinnacle on “I Miss You Beau Velasco” and the closer “Is It The End Again?” There are songs here about mammoth Ecstasy binges (“Chew It Like A Gun Gum”), Beasties-like celebrations of arcane handshakes (first single, “Slap Slap Slap Pound Up Down Snap”) affirmations of relying on positivity thoughout the roughest of times "We Are Going Anywhere Man", a celebration of one of the stars of A Bout De Souuffle (“Michel Poiccard (She Yearns For The Devil)”), tales of smashed equipment and angry promoters (“Can You Seen Straight?”), with a dose of familiar, snotty, punk anthems about French girls with a penchant for taking it up the shitter (“I Like The Wrong Way”). Diplo drops in for a fight and ends up giving them a keyboard line for “Yo David Chase!”. Spank Rock guests on “7PM Woke Up An Hour Ago”.Yes, all of them are instilled with the same manic Ritalin-and –Sunny-D-induced energy of their earlier records, but it feels like something deeper has happened here, too. Above it all floats the spirit of Beau Velasco, amused and laconic. Words of his were rescued from samplers and old ProTools sessions so that it is his voice that opens the record with words which could serve as the group’s mission statement, perhaps never so fully realised: “I wanna take this tape and blow up ya fuckin’ stereo!”

The Damnwells No One Listens To The Band Anymore Street Date: March 15, 2011 Coming off a transitional year for the band, The Damnwells are set to release No One Listens to the Band Anymore, an album funded entirely by fans through PledgeMusic.com. As part of their involvement, Pledgers were treated to exclusive videos from the studio, rough cuts and B sides, and blogs written by Alex Dezen throughout the recording process. The band has been referred to as a collaborative of great musicians and producers working with songs by lead singer/songwriter Alex Dezen. The Fleshtones
Brooklyn Sound Solution NATIONAL release date: CD/LP/Deluxe: 3.15.2011
“Pardon us for living, but the graveyard is full.” Or so goes the title of a new documentary film telling the tale of The Fleshtones. While that sentiment is a bit tongue-in-cheek, it’s also true. The Fleshtones have been grinding out garage rock before garage rock was even called garage rock, and turning rock clubs like Max’s Kansas City into impromptu discos for over 30 years. While chart hits and magazine covers weren’t to be their fate; a reputation as the hardest working, most sincere rock band on the planet was cultivated in the process. The result of that distinction is their new album Brooklyn Sound Solution featuring the legendary Lenny Kaye. In addition to his role as long-time guitarist for Patti Smith, Kaye also curated the seminal garage and psychedelic music compliations Nuggets. Have a problem you can’t solve? The Fleshtones offer you a Brooklyn Sound Solution.
REtail: We will be doing targeted marketing in key markets across the nation. Print ads will run in key tour markets. Marketing funds are available for key indies and regional chain programs starting on street date and running through April. In-store play copies, promo items, and posters are available, as well as banners to place on retail websites and eblasts: contact your sales rep or mike@yeproc.com. Radio: We will target College and select AAA Non Commercial radio. This record has a great garage rock vibe and there are a lot of fans in the radio world, so we should be able to gather support early on. We will target Sirius XM Underground Garage (nationally syndicated) and many other stations across the nation. We will also be pitching in studios in all tour markets. Press: Lenny Kaye will be a great point of interest here. Nuggets is an EXTREMELY well loved series and people still find it influential. We will have a new bio with quotes from Lenny about the album. Our focus here will move away from the old notion that the Fleshtones are the originators of much of the garage rock resurgence of the early aughts and even the one going on now. We will instead focus on the music they are making now and the fact that it’s as good as anything they’ve ever done and rocks just as hard. The debut album from
Tim Heidecker and Davin Wood
of Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! Heidecker & Wood, is the songwriting and recording duo Tim Heidecker (co-creator of “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!”) and Davin Wood (composer on “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!”) Their first release, Starting From Nowhere, consists of twelve songs written and recorded at Heidecker and Wood’s home studios over the course of two years. With recordings that evoke the sounds of a range of 70’s rock and singer-songwriters, from Steely Dan and The Eagles, to The Doobie Brothers and Jackson Browne. The combination of Heidecker’s strange mix of dry humor and sincerity with Wood’s spot-on ability to create authentically nostalgic sounding tracks creates a simultaneously puzzling and delightful listening experience; one that deserves multiple spins and is bound to result in spontaneous shower serenades. From what began as a hobby and a collection of songs, and encouraged by Tim and Davin’s friends, this album evolved into a worthy release. But to be true to the style they were going for things had to sound just right. So Tim brought on Pierre de Reeder (Rilo Kiley) to mix the record, who then suggested bringing in session drummer Jason Boesel to replace Davin’s midi drums which were “oh so close”, but missing the organic feel of a real human being. Pierre took what began in a bedroom office and a laptop and turned it into something that sounds like it came out of a Sunset Blvd studio. So there you have it. Call it whatever you like: Vanity project? Sure. Novelty record? Why not? Our only hope is that you won’t be able to get these songs out of your head and that one day you’ll be caught singing out loud to yourself “you better be fighting what’s right in the world,” and wonder “what the f**k does THAT mean?”

D. Charles Speer Arghiledes Thrill - 263 Limited LP $16.99 BOX LOT LP 40 Vinyl is non-returnable
*90377-ACGDBd
GENRE : FOLK/WORLD FILE UNDER: “S” Speer, D. Charles “N” No Neck Blues Band Born and raised in Atlanta, GA, David Charles Shuford is the body behind Speer. After moving to New York City in the early 90s, Shuford forged a path as a musician adept in multiple sounds and styles. A member of the No Neck Blues Band for 15 years and running, he has also engaged his mind and fingers in other groups such as Enos Slaughter, The Suntanama, Egypt Is The Magick #, and Coach Fingers. Through a steady series of home recordings, the Speer trajectory began to take shape in the early 2000’s. Assembling of masses of vibration bearing wood was needed to fulfill one man’s band obligations. The full instrumental ensemble of a Middle Eastern belly dance troupe and a selection of voices from a Cajun band were thereby smashed together to engender a sound wildly alive. After a self released debut solo LP Some Forgotten Country in 2007, Speer then sought out a public performance outlet with the killing-est band in the land, the Helix. His second solo LP Arghiledes brings a return focus upon acoustic instrumentation, with a still healthy dose of electric effects and speaker fry. Arghiledes is a trip to the underworld. One Greek in Hades vying to enchant the shades. Steeped in the sounds of the 1930s Piraeus Quartet, this selection of recordings is the outgrowth of a decade long engagement with the rich heritage of early 20th century Greek music. Utilizing an array of traditional instrumentation (including trichordo bouzouki, baglamas, worry bead percussion on whiskey glass, zills and many more), Arghiledes is a work infused with improvisational fire and constructed on the emotionally cutting modes of Anatolia. Heavy influence is drawn from the music of Markos Vamvakaris, the reknown patriarch of the bouzouki; his composition “The Sniffer”, a musical portrait of a malevolent drug addict, is given a faithful rendition. Another of his songs “At Phaliro Where You Swim” is interpolated into the lead off track, which takes a more experimental sound-based approach. This LP is an attempt at working within the tradition of hasiklidika, hashish songs which spilled from late night dens of iniquity known as tekedes. Though inspired by music of greater vintage, these pieces also sup at the altar of 60s and 70s psychedelia and dub as evidenced by the head turning grind and swirl of tracks like “Tsamiko Hijaz” and “Harmanis”. A true solo record in the overdub manner of Todd Rundgren and Tony McPhee, all sounds were performed, treated and mixed by D. Charles Speer. This limited editios LP will be followed quickly by an electric album with the Helix, Leaving the Commonwealth on April 12, 2011. The combination will serve to further cement D. Charles Speer’s reputation as one of the most innovative players out there.

GENRE : ELECTRONIC/ROCK FILE UNDER: “M” Mi Ami
Release Date: March 15, 2011 NO EXPORT TRACK LISTING:
Dolphins makes it hard to believe that Mi Ami used to be a rock band. Gone are the ferocious guitar, hypnotic bass-lines, and the thundering drums of Steal Your Face (2010, Thrill Jockey) and Watersports (2009, Touch and Go/Quarterstick), now replaced by an unrelenting electronic vibrancy. Bass player Jacob Long left the band earlier this year, creating an opportunity for founding members Damon Palermo and Daniel Martin-McCormick to dive headfirst into a new setup: Damon on the 707 drum machine and a sampler that uses floppy disks, Daniel on the mic and keys, riding the mix. Elements of this new approach can be heard on their Cut Men and Towers Fall (Techno 1.1) 12”s, but those were baby steps. Dolphins is the sound of a band diving head first into the musical fray. Listeners can feel Damon’s command of the rhythm expressed through the drum machine, alchemizing the inorganic into the organic, while Daniel’s trademark vocals remind you that this is Mi Ami. Psyched on their fresh palette as a duo, they went in the studio only three months later with Trans Am’s Phil Manley (Watersports, Steal Your Face) performing these four tracks live. Dolphins is the fruit of that labor. A melting, dystopian refraction of left-field new age, lush soundscapes and Italo daydreams overlapping with slaughtered dolphins and the heartbreak of “Hard Up.” Simultaneously ingesting and rejecting pop pleasure, wide-eyed optimism and modern despair, it is equal parts improvisatory winging it and forceful, fully-realized vision. Blurring the line between the tainted and the sublime, Dolphins is the sound of a band thrillingly re-imagining itself.

GENRE : ROCK FILE UNDER: “E” Eleventh Dream Day When one thinks about rock music, there are several words that come to mind: sex, drugs, youth, punk and for many years, male. The “manliness” of rock seems to have been solidly debunked. Is “youth” on the brink? The last few years have seen a surge of critical and commercial success of bands from the ‘90s, or otherwise middle-aged artists. Superchunk, Slint, Come, The Gories and many others have reunited to find themselves more popular then they were back in the day. Sonic Youth, Tortoise, Yo La Tengo, and The Flaming Lips are some of the most successful artists from the indie community. It is true that critics and audiences alike embrace new artists with mind bending rapidity thanks to blogs, social networks, and video technology. The same audience seems equally fast to reward and embrace artists whose careers began before those championing their virtues were born. Riot Now!, Eleventh Dream Day’s 10th album, is a call back to the urgency of 1988’s Prairie School Freakout, with a string of mostly first takes tracked in one session with few overdubs. Rick Rizzo, Janet Beveridge Bean, Douglas McCombs and Mark Greenberg revel in their own mixture of melodic mayhem. The band, while always moderately active in Chicago have not released a record since 2006. Their 2011 album cover depicts a check out line in a grocery store. A customer stands glibly in line wearing a shirt that says “Riot Now!” Overhead a security camera films, and customers move about with blank expressions. The cover and many of the songs are comments on the contradictions inherit in a desire for large scale social change while retaining all the creature comforts of prosperity. While this election has shown us that Americans have less patience, we are largely complacent and unable to take action beyond complaint. Jason Ankeny described Eleventh Dream Day as “one of the most resilient and criminally underappreciated bands to rise from the Midwestern underground community. The career of the noisy guitar unit is a textbook study in alt-rock endurance; despite a nightmarish major-label tenure, ill-timed roster changes, and commercial indifference, the group persevered, and emerged as elder statesmen of the Chicago independent scene.” Eleventh Dream Day are a band who make music because they are compelled to. Their motivation is as pure as it was when they began. They have something to say and they need to say it. The band are true to the ethos of the punk rock that inspired them. There can be no more perfect final nail in the coffin of those who still believe rock is the exclusive domain of youth. Balancing ragged guitars against fragile melodies and sweet vocal harmonies, the Chicago group’s three late ‘80s/early ‘90s albums perfectly encapsulated the promise – both artistic and commercial – of post-punk alternative rock.” – Rolling Stone

Eternal Tapestry Beyond The 4th Door Thrill - 252
Eternal Tapestry started in the fall of 2005, conceived after original members Nick Bindeman and Dewey Mahood discovered their mutual love of Sonny Sharrock and Neu! It was these two vastly different artists who helped the band’s sound take shape, free improvised guitar with structured rhythms and lots of layered ambient sound. They asked a few friends to join them in the band and so it began. Nick’s younger brother Jed Bindeman moved to Portland, Oregon in the summer of 2006 and joined shortly afterwards. At this time both Nick and Jed were playing drums as part of a six piece band, making very chaotic and dark psychedelic music. A few members came and went around this time, leaving the core trio of Nick, Dewey and Jed to continue on their own. Most of the limited edition LPs released to date document this trio. In 2009 Ryan Carlile joined the band on saxophone and synth, and just in the last year Krag Likins joined as bassist, completing the current line up. The members of Eternal Tapestry are extremely active in the experimental underground. Nick explores minimal synth music as Tunnels, with an album to come on Troubleman Unlimited in 2011. In addition Nick plays guitar in the psychedelic/improv group Jackie-O Motherfucker. Dewey has recorded solo bliss out music as Plankton Wat since 2002, and explores the outer realms of dub as Edibles. Jed has played in the bi-coastal drone/rock band Heavy Winged since 2004 and has released many records with the band over the years, with the latest being a release on Type Records. Jed also joined Jackie-O Motherfucker as their drummer at the beginning of 2010, and plays in the minimalist/techno project Operative. Ryan plays as one half of the electronic/drone duo Cloaks. Jed and Dewey also collaborate with Barn Owl as the group Gärden Söund, whose debut album came out this fall on the Digitalis label. On their Thrill Jockey debut Eternal Tapestry have delivered an album not unlike their epic live shows. Beyond the 4th Door contains long stretches of melodic guitar improvisations, dark brooding songs that slowly build and expand to allow in layers of light. The album was recorded in their home studio and was created by recording more that two hours of material, mostly live, and hand picking what you hold in your hands. There is a free and open nature to their structure creating for the listener a spacious environment to explore. Harkening back to the early 70’s experimental rock that inspired them, such as Popol Vuh, Cluster and Träd Gräs och Stenar, Beyond the 4th Door is an album meant to be listened to in its entirety. There is no single, no easy sound bite. It is not a record made for the pop world – it is a record made despite it. The brooding psych rock builds from the contemplative, atmospheric opener of “Ancient Echos” through to the heavy epic “Galactic Derelict”, taking the listener way out and then gently calling them back with the reprise of Nick’s ghostly vocals on “Reflections in a Mirage”. The album finishes with a hint of light in the delicate guitar and bass interplay, floating on the ambient waves created by the open cymbal and horn work of “Time Winds Through a Glass, Cleary”. Eternal Tapestry are in every way musicians of the now. Extremely active in the new underground of cassettes and CD-Rs, releasing limited edition carefully designed albums on the premier purveyors of the counterculture. Turning the warehouse show on its head by making it a mini-festival of like-minded musicians whose shows are very much a unique event as opposed to an attempt to sell or recreate a record. What is old is what is new, the openness of the 70’s comes back to thrive well beyond the parameters of Pitchfork and the like. We invite you to explore the world, Beyond the 4th Door.

Eternal Tapestry are one of an increasing number of artists reclaiming it for more innervated and colourful purposes... The austere focus of OM et al is displaced by Motor City energy and space rock colour rooted in The Stooges, Hawkwind, heavy Kraut and latterday believers like Spacemen 3 and Loop.” - The Wire “Krauty, spaced-out, bluesy improv that hits hard. In the same vein as Parson Sound or Can, these guys have really nailed the art of weaving improv in and out of catchy riffs, really sweet.” - Aquarius

Applied working method. Information is written to the environment. Stimuli, atmosphere, delicate movements. A few channels are recorded, these trigger reactions, semi-automatic overdubs, complementary actions from others. Carried-out work seems to define new building structures. Instincts, learned patterns and responses, spontaneous additions and supplements. Two chords are played, then two again, four, they are lustpermuted, four, a metal whistle, a faint howl is cut in, the elements are permuted, permuted, lust-permuted.” Swedish trio Tape was formed in 2000 by brothers Andreas and Johan Berthling with Tomas Hallonsten. Taking cues both from pop, experimentalism, and minimalism their sound has become recognized internationally and is clearly something of its own. Their first album Opera was released on the Häpna imprint (which Johan is a co-owner of) in 2002. Working intuitive, all by themselves, they created mini symphonies out of electronic sounds paired with a stunning melodic lyricism. With an array of electronic and acoustic instruments at hand they have gone on to release three additional full length albums (Milieu, Rideau, and Luminarium). In 2006 they collaborated with Japanese duo Tenniscoats for their album Tan-Tan Therapy. The same year they recorded in Tokyo with Japanese quartet Minamo for the album Birds of a Feather. Tape have performed worldwide, playing shows in Japan, China, Taiwan, and tours of Europe and the US. Since Luminarium was released in 2008 the band have been diligently recording in their Summa Studio in Stockholm. The results of their labor is the new album Revelationes.
Revelationes is the 5th studio album from Tape, their first since 2008’s Luminarium and the follow-up to their collaboration LP with Bill Wells (Fugue, Immune 008, 2010)
“Tape organically blend balsa-light acoustic textures (guitars, percussion, winds and brass) with a range of organs and a gentle yet firm digital pressure.” – The Wire

“these four minimalist sketches pick up where Brian Eno’s work with Harold Budd left off, their delicate piano lines overlaid with gently picked guitars, distant organ chords and the barest splash of cymbals.” - Uncut (on Fugue)

“Handcream For A Generation and Judy Sucks A Lemon For Breakfast firmed up their credentials as one of Britain's more consistently smart indie bands…if the free taster track, “United Provinces Of India” is anything to go by, the final product will be well worth it.” - The Guardian, Pick of 2011 Music Preview. After many a time in the studio, under lab conditions, Cornershop are set to release their new album featuring the incredible double sugar-coated vocals of Bubbley Kaur on March 15, 2011 through the band’s own label, Ample Play in North America. When Tjinder and Bubbley decided to work with each other, she had not recorded a note of music. They had met very fleetingly, years ago at a cellar gathering in Preston Lancashire (UK) where Tjinder Singh and Benedict Ayres studied. So it was much surprise when a taxi driver friend mentioned an Asian lady that liked to sing, was the same lady that worked in a local launderette, was the same lady he had seen in a northern cellar bar. They then met a good many times at Tjinder’s house where they would listen to and discuss traditional Punjabi Folk Music, and slowly Bubbley came out writing her own original lyrics, which were set to a varied range of modern music. ‘Natch’ was the first song she recorded, followed by ‘Topknot,’ and together they became the first double ‘A’ single on Rough Trade Records. The complete recordings have now been finished in their own good time. Tjinder explains “There was no need to quickly put the album out, but there was a need to make it top rank and evergreen, especially as I have wanted to do an album like this for 20 years.” Cornershop set up their own, Ample Play label to release the highly acclaimed album Judy Sucks A Lemon For Breakfast. Always known for being innovative, the band finished this album with the support of pre-orders via the PledgeMusic platform. The way Tjinder and Bubbley met was like a hindi movie script, and the outcome of the music is like an Asian version of The Kids From Fame – totally upbeat, giving rise to new ways of expressing yourself. 2010 marks the 25th anniversary of Valley Of Rain - the debut album by Giant Sand and Fire Records is proud to announce the start of a Giant Sand/ Howe Gelb series of rolling reissues from September 2010, which will see the re-release of roughly 30 albums. “Purge & Slouch” was originally released in 1993 and is the ninth Giant Sand reissue in the series from Fire Records and follow up to the successful „Center Of The Universe‟. After the commercial and critical success of „Center Of The Universe‟, Giant Sand looked to lay down the instinctive and impulsive spark of the band onto record, “Believing in recording in "the moment of impact" to result in a "perfect harvest" where a song gets captured the first time it ever gets played, and this record marks the moment where 98.5% of it was done like this”. Howe was planning on it being his "metal machine music" album, but instead, “some real songs happened too many times in the process ... songs I have never learned”. Recorded at a house on the outskirts of Tucson, „Ramp„ features some local guest guitarists on a couple of tracks with the aim to “fully realize an album without working up any of it before arriving at the studio”. “Giant Sand is a mood,” says Howe‟ of Giant Sand, as if trying to offer a low-key explanation for his dizzying array of artistic exploration that includes a back-catalogue of some 40 albums as a singer, band-leader and producer. After growing up in Pennsylvania in the 1970‟s, it wasn‟t until he moved to Tuscon, Arizona that he met his musical soul mate, the guitarist Rainer Ptaceck. The two formed Giant Sandworms and issued only a handful of recordings before the worms were put to rest: since then, Giant Sand have released 24 albums - an impressive haul when considering Howe‟s equally prolific output under other projects including Black Ranchette and Arizona Amp & Alternator as well as his solo releases. 2010 marks the 25th anniversary of Valley Of Rain - the debut album by Giant Sand and Fire Records is proud to announce the start of a Giant Sand/ Howe Gelb series of rolling reissues from September 2010, which will see the re-release of roughly 30 albums. “Ramp” was originally released in 1991 and is the seventh Giant Sand reissue in the series from Fire Records. For „Ramp‟ Giant Sand ushered in several new members to the fold, “including young bassist Joey burns, the stunning voice of 74 year old Pappy Allen, and our sweet, sweet friend Victoria Williams .. we had begun recording in Tucson and finished it back in Venice, CA at mad dog studio again .. the first track was produced by Dusty Wakeman and featured the late great Duane Jarvis”. Howe describes that the experiment with „Ramp‟ was “to record an electric song live in the studio and have the pre-recorded acoustic bridge be slotted in by DAT machine while then starting up again with the electric part live at the same pace as before the DAT take was applied with its different beat. What made this tricky was the mechanical delay of the play button on the state of the art day machine...you can hear the result in "warm storm". “Giant Sand is a mood,” says Howe‟ of Giant Sand, as if trying to offer a low-key explanation for his dizzying array of artistic exploration that includes a back-catalogue of some 40 albums as a singer, band-leader and producer. JAD FAIR - Beautiful Songs (The Best Of Jad Fair)
FORMAT - 3CD LABEL - Fire Records UPC - 809236113825 CATALOG # - FIRECD138 LIST PRICE - $26.99 Fire Records brings you a triple CD crammed with 100+ of the best songs spanning the career of the legendary Jad Fair and his band Half Japanese. Liner notes by Everett True. "Jad Fair is the godfather of minimalist monster art rock - a gentleman and a beast." Edwin Pouncey The Wire. “I love him for his boundless enthusiasm and shy genius” says Everett True, “.. maybe it’s wrong to call Jad naïve because he knows what he’s doing, but he has a child-like wonderment that to me is at the core of most great music I can name. The Shaggs, Leadbelly, Jonathan Richman. He makes my feet want to move, and there’s no higher compliment, I’ve seen Jad play concerts with a rolled-up newspaper and upturned wastebasket for rhythm, with just his voice for colour. I’ve also seen Jad play stadiums in precisely the same fashion – with a band behind him, sure, but with the spirit intact – in front of crowds of over 15,000, in support to Nirvana on their final tour.

After the cult success of „Blue Blood Birds‟ in 2008, Sawyer and his Ghosts are back again with their debut for Fire Records, eleven new songs But in the con-tours, peaks and troughs of „How To Eat Snakes‟ there is real, earthy beauty. Give yourself up to the spectral charms of Matthew Sawyer and the Ghosts
JAD FAIR - His Name Itself Is Music
FORMAT - CD LABEL - Fire Records UPC - 809236113924 CATALOG # - FIRECD139 LIST PRICE - $15.99 Jad Fair is by his own admittance a prolific artist, “It takes a lot of work, and bands spend way more time in the studio than I do. Most of my albums have taken three or four days to record‟‟. It comes as no surprise then that whilst releasing „Beautiful Songs - the Best Of Jad Fair‟, an album featuring both Jad‟s own material and those created with Half Japanese and boasting over 100 tracks, that Jad can o er yet another contribution „His Name Itself Is Music‟, to what is already a considerable and esteemed bank of work, „His Name Itself Is Music‟ see‟s Jad continue to embrace his emotive and raw approach to music making. An un-tuned guitar, his voice for beats and his expressive singing wavering in and out of pitch as if mo-mentarily plucked from his generous subconscious.
RILO KILEY
TAKE OFFS AND LANDINGS bark19 / 2xLP+MP3
AVAILABLE NOW!
Los Angeles, California, circa 2001. Rilo Kiley comes into the room. The Echo Park-based songwriters and multi-instrumentalists have an uncanny knack for fashioning pop songs that sound like something you've been humming all your life. The 3-boy/1-girl quartet's picture already appears in several dictionary editions next to the "Indie Pop" entry. They are skilled. They can go from a swirling, indie-rock opus to a softly strummed, country-tinged ballad of heartbreak and not cheapen the transition with irony. Their songs are riddled with impossibly catchy melodies, off-kilter lyrics, sweetness, light and sadness. Most importantly, though, Rilo Kiley really means it, and their honest instinct for subtle songwriting sets them apart from the herd of twee popsters that infest the pop spectrum.

Forbidden Friends is an exciting new project from Hutch Harris, his first new project since starting The Thermals eight years ago. But Forbidden Friends sound nothing like the brash, biting power-pop for which Harris and The Thermals are famous, except maybe the sweet nasal croon that is Harris's trademark vocal sound. "Tiny Hands", the first single from Forbidden Friends, is a fresh slice of minimal acoustic pop-rock - the likes of which we haven't heard since The Violent Femmes first LP dropped back in 1983. And like The Violent Femmes, though there are no loud amplifiers or distortion, and instruments are played rather than fucking smashed, there is still an awesome high energy not unlike the best melodic punk rock. The songs are catchy and incredibly UP. You can dance to these songs, ah-oo. You can sing along with these songs, ah-ah-ah-oo. You may possibly fall in love to these songs, ah-oo! Ok... "Tiny Hands" and "For You" were both performed almost entirely (guitar, bass, drums and vocals) by Harris. Percussion was supplied by fellow Thermals Kathy Foster and Westin Glass, and Michael Lerner of Telekinesis. The single was recorded at Jackpot! in Portland, Oregon by Kendra Lynn. Similar to the recent Thermals sessions at Jackpot, the recording process was an all-analog affair (2" tracking, 1/4" mixing), but Lynn went one old-school step further and mixed the tracks MONO. For those too young to know (or care) it means the exact same sound is coming out of both speakers. So if you're listening to these songs on a cheap stereo with one busted speaker you will lose nothing and this record will still sound great! Just turn it UP. Ah-oo!

Their first album, 1990's Last Decade Dead Century, was a critical sensation, especially in the U.K., where listeners readily embraced the band's political invective and insurrectionist rantings as the next big thing. .

FUNKYSTEPZ — Fuller / Hurricane Riddim
FORMAT - 12” LABEL - Hyperdub UPC - 5055300328472 CATALOG # - HDB049 LIST PRICE - $11.99 Funkystepz are a collective of house producers from North London, with a show on Rinse FM and a string of self-released underground hits under their belts. They're definitely some of the producers to watch out for this year. After a period of trial and testing on dubplate by DJs like Kode9 and Marcus Nasty, this first release for Hyperdub doesn't mess about. ‘Fuller’ is a dancefloor destroyer of a very British vintage. Hard without being rigid, with a cold, elastic sense of melody that bounces and snaps around the midrange between the bass and snares. Tem-pered by an occasional organ stab, it's one of those tracks that will lively up any club straight away, doing away with the forced euphoria of a lot of contemporary dance music, and instead honing the harder-to-master skill of energetic intensity and building anticipation. ‘Hurricane Riddim’ takes the listener through a number of contrasting moods simply but effectively. Opening with heavy orchestral stabs and military snares reminicent of classic grime, the addition of a complicated, snaking bassline gives the track a jump up feel, and the eight-bar aggression gives way to sections of orchestral calm and a sad but bouncy piano melody. Tracklisting: A. Fuller AA. Hurricane Riddim .
WEDDING PRESENT — Live 1989
FORMAT - 2CD LABEL - Scopitones UPC - 5024545603026 CATALOG # - TONECD034 LIST PRICE - $17.99 ‘LIVE 1989’ collects the fifth and sixth of The Wedding Present’s infamous ‘live tapes’; cassettes that the band sold at gigs and through their fanzine in the late 80s. The recordings were unavailable any-where else. Fans eagerly collected them and they became very rare. This is the third in the series of these much-demanded CD and digital releases - ‘Live 1987’ and ‘Live 1988’ have both been graciously received by the press and the band’s record buying public.‘LIVE 1989’ includes the somewhat bewildering, but extremely powerful concert of The Wedding Present’s ‘Ukrainians’ project… joined by singer/violin player Len Liggins and mandolin player Roman Remey-nes. The second disc in the set sees the band return to their old form at the top of their Indie game with hits from their albums Bizarro and George Best.

Apocalypse Now… end of the world – enough said.
The Poison Tree's self-titled debut, out March 15 on embarque, could easily have been found on some old reels of 1/2" tape buried under a mattress in the Chelsea Hotel. Led by former King of France frontman Steve Salett, ‘The Poison Tree’ (a nod to William Blake’s “Songs of Innocence and Experience”) was recorded on tape and tracked mostly as a live ensemble at Sear Sound and Salett’s own Saltlands Studio in Brooklyn. Seductive with a ragged elegance, the music slyly courts listeners with unhurried tones and excellent songwriting. Artful and thoughtful, 'The Poison Tree' is centered on Salett's nylon-stringed guitar and builds outward with keyboards, horn and harmony. Salett's burnished baritone easily draws comparisons with Leonard Cohen, Lee Hazelwood and Serge Gainsbourg, but he is also culturally connected with these artists. Like Hazelwood and Gainsbourg, Salett is a committed producer and collaborator, nourishing a vibrant musical community in Brooklyn. The Poison Tree features a rotating cast of some of Brooklyn’s finest musicians including Thomas Bartlett (Doveman), Dawn Landes and Jeff Hill (Rufus Wainwright). At Saltlands Studios in DUMBO, Salett, the founder, has maintained an impressive enclave of musicians, creating a tight-knit independent recording facility and collective. Artists who have recorded there recently include: Sondre Lerche, The Soft Pack, Josh Ritter, Doveman, Sam Amidon and The National. More info: http://saltlands.com/. “From the second the band walked on stage until the last second of the last song-- laughter, excitement, and 1000’s of camera flashes filled the room. What made it even better was the fact that STOD was actually a killer band-- not just some gimmick.” – Seattle Rock Guy “Then there was Steel Tigers of Death on the Neumos stage . . . .with a name like that, you’d better be brinin’ it... and ya, they did. Four guys in rabbit suits rocking it out with punk flavor; exactly what the crowd was in the mood for. The sheer spectacle alone was worth watching.” – Pinpoint Music “Seattle’s Steel Tigers of Death have already started to garner a following of fans with their gale-force drumming, disorienting time signatures, and undercurrent of freakishly hooky melodies.” – The Stranger “Steel Tigers of Death have struck the perfect balance. They liven up their shows with ever-changing matching ensembles (ugly sweaters one show, matching tennis ensembles the next) and hilarious patter. And when it comes time to unleash whippet-quick, blistering originals like “Sea Demon” and “Target: Cockpuncher,” the boys are deadly serious.
