MENOMENA MINES
bark101 CD / 2xLP+MP3
STREET DATE: JULY 27, 2010
Portland, OR art-rock trio Menomena is among the leaders of the new school of indie rock – musically complex, melodically and lyrically riveting, and unlike anything that has come before. Their breakthrough album Friend & Foe epitomized the artistry required to balance a modern band's storm of ideas, and it was anointed “Best New Music” by indie tastemaker Pitchfork, whose review of that record said, “music this full of ideas, sections and material can come across as overstuffed, but this feels just right almost everywhere.”

The band's newest work comes after a period of significant upheaval that has left them with no shortage of new ideas, and Mines is as good or better than anything they've done to-date. In the wake of brutal disagreements, unrelenting grudges and failed marriages (not to mention a world full of modern terrorism, natural disasters and economic collapse) Menomena is still standing, and has made an album that many are already saying defines the state of intelligent pop music one decade into the millenium.
MARKETING NOTES • Mines is the follow-up to 2007’s essential Friend & Foe, which has scanned almost 50,000 albums to date.

DEAN & BRITTA 13 MOST BEAUTIFUL: SONGS FOR ANDY WARHOL'S SCREEN TESTS STREET DATE 07.27.10 Dean & Britta are set to release a limited edition double-CD package - 13 Most Beautiful: Songs for Andy Warhol's Screen Tests. This project was initially commissioned by the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. Dean & Britta created 13 songs and instrumentals to perform live in a multimedia show, with Andy Warhol's Screen Tests projected on a large screen above the band as they play. The screen tests were short, silent portrait films made by Warhol at the Factory between 1964 and 1966 -- of actors, dancers, artists, and Factory regulars. Each film is 4:15 in length. Dean & Britta selected 13 subjects (including Dennis Hopper, Nico, Lou Reed) and recorded 8 songs and 5 instrumentals for them. These are original studio recordings, produced by Dean & Britta, with additional remixes by Scott Hardkiss, Sonic Boom (MGMT, Spacemen 3) and My Robot Friend. Songs are a mix of originals and covers - including Bob Dylan's "I'll Keep It With Mine" and the Velvet Underground's "Not a Young Man Anymore." Dean & Britta have been touring 13 Most Beautiful for 18 months, have now played 50 shows around the world, from the Sydney Opera House to Lincoln Center, NYC to a 15th-century cathedral in Paris. Additional 13 Most Beautiful shows are now booked into 2011, with dates in Bilbao, London, Dresden, Mulhouse, Saint Brieuc, Paris, Indianapolis, Cleveland and New York. In addition Dean & Britta will be performing in the following cities this fall: Boston, Toronto, San Francsico, Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta.

Bombay Bicycle Club, the unexpected rock phenomenon who have taken the UK by storm this year, have announced plans for the US release of their acclaimed debut album, I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose. The album will be released in the states on July 13 via Portland based label Arena Rock Recording Company. The album will be available in limited edition vinyl and CD as well as digitally. This US release will finally give American music fans an opportunity discover what critics and fans in the UK have been touting as one of the most exciting new bands for the past year, even awarding Bombay Bicycle Club the crown of “Best New Band” at the 2010 NME Awards, beating out The xx, La Roux, The Big Pink and Mumford and Sons. The US version of I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose will feature three exclusive bonus tracks not available on the UK release. Bombay Bicycle Club’s skyrocketing journey to indie rock notoriety started in 2006 when the four-piece, made up of Jack Steadman (vocals, guitars), Jamie MacColl (guitars), Suren De Saram (drums), and Ed Nash (bass), from Crouch End, London took home the grand prize in Channel 4’s “Road to V” competition which landed them the opening performance of 2006’s V Festival. Soon after, the band self-released their debut EP, 2007’s The Boy I Used to Be followed by 2008’s Indie Chart-topping EP How We Are. After the success of both releases, Bombay Bicycle Club took to the studio to record their debut full length with studio veteran Jim Abbiss, the producer of landmark debut albums by Arctic Monkeys, UNKLE, Kasabian and Adele. The record encompasses a garagey and intimate feel punctuated with sonically epic and soaring moments with most of the tracks being laid down at Konk studios and several of the beats put together by Jack as guide tracks in his bedroom deemed worthy enough to make it all the way through to the final mix. From the dizzying swoops and morning-after ruefulness of opener “Emergency Contraception Blues” to the ambitious, opentuned, Appalachian folk feel of “The Giantess,” the album thrums with subtle invention and quiet emotional intensity. It’s an outstanding debut, brimming with youthful urgency, honesty and romance. Like its bashful creators, I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose doesn’t feel the need to shout, scream or bluster to be heard. Instead, its chiming chords and sighed melodies blaze proudly like flushed cheeks on a cold day.

Artist: La Gritona Title: Demasiado tonto para los niños listos. Demasiado listo para los niños tontos. Catalog #: TR-038 Label: Tortuga Recordings Format: 2xCD Release Date: July 27th, 2010 CD SRLP: $13.99 UPC: 6 34457 52582 5 Box Lot: 30 Territory Restrictions: US Only DESCRIPTION It was the live show that did it for me. Imagine massive slabs of discordance at earsplitting volume and a terrifyingly intense, tattooed madman working out his personal demons while wearing a too-small Sonic the Hedgehog tee shirt and that gives you a good idea of what La Gritona were like in the live setting. At the time most bands in Boston were recycling Sabbath riffs or ripping off Helmet but La Gritona were tapping into something darker and heavier. There was the obvious Black Flag intensity but concurrently The Birthday Party, Voivod and Swans were subtly being referenced and the result put most people outside of their comfort zone. It was raw, sublime, artsy and barbaric all at once. It was like watching The Lost Highway after being awake for 24 hours; you couldn’t quite follow the narrative but you knew you were witnessing something that was just outside of your grasp and the truth lie just beyond the comforting glow of the campfire deep beyond the treeline. The role of innovator can be a lonely path. William Blake was largely unrecognized during his lifetime but is now thought of a seminal figure in the art world but I hesitate to use the word “art” to describe La Gritona. They were a band that created ugly, brutal and emotionally intense music that was criminally underappreciated when they were around. Luckily the material has been rescued from obscurity by the good people at Tortuga and assembled in this document, giving you an audio snapshot of the shot, intense career of La Gritona, a band “too dumb for the smart kids and too smart for the dumb kids.” “SELLING POINTS” -This release is a 41 track discography on 2xCD featuring La Gritona's entire recorded output. It includes previously unreleased material in addition to all out of print tracks, including their 1996 Steve Albini recorded full length Arrasa Con Todo. They were a band in existence 10 years too early… -Members of La Gritona have also done time over the years in a hefty list of Boston/NYC/Cleveland bands in the 90's, and right on through to the present. Bands include, but are certainly not limited to: Eye for an Eye, Suicide King, Michael Mancini, Keelhaul, 27, Anodyne, Sweetness, Blacktail, Windmills by the Ocean, Vasilek, Post Mortem, Imedipsych, Slaughter Shack, The Finger, Killdren, My Rifle, My Pony, And Me, Lupa Voluma, Sweetheart Mistreaters, Carneceria, Murder Baby, Beastovitch and, we think Dana was in Intergrity at some point too, but then again who wasn't, right? “CHOICE PRESS QUOTES” “Growling vocals, melodic, distortion-filled guitars and a solid rhythm section give La Gritona a sound that’s not punk, not hardcore, not metal but an original likable heavy thing that we could use more of.” - Pit Report “Super heavy, muddy, low fi gruesomeness, in a Laughing Hyenas / Melvins vein with larynx shredding vocals by Colin Burns” - Zoom “..structures that are similar to Rollins Band. La Gritona come across leaner and meaner, amped up and primed to kill. the vocals are deep and gutteral and there’s occasional H.R. helium ranged shrieks. The chords La Gritona use are slicing like old Die Kreuken or Voivod.” - All That

With his transition from Paul Marshall to the artist known as Lone Wolf, the songwriter weaves tapestries of lyrical lust, vengeance and Poe-esque murder together with equally lush instrumentation, further fleshing out his originally bare compositions with sweeping horns, strings and dramatic musical fanfare. RecoRd StoRe Spotlight
AmoebA music In 1990 Amoeba Music was born on Telegraph Avenue in one of California’s most exciting and revolutionary cities - Berkeley. The passion they shared with their customers for a truly broad, expertly stocked music selection at an irresistible price quickly kindled into a strong community and widespread attention. Since then they’ve expanded many times and opened stores in two major California cities, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Today, music lovers come from far and near to visit their three brick-and-mortar stores. They stock every kind of music and movies - from the top 40 to the best in underground rock and hip-hop, soul, electronica, new and classic jazz, world music, roots music and experimental music. They also have the biggest, most diverse and affordable selection of DVDs and vinyl LPs found anywhere. Since they’re a trading post for new and used discs, their stock changes daily, and just about anything you’re looking for can be found inside. They’re more than just a record store - they’re a 21st century music outlet, a website, a popular live performance venue, and together with their customers they’re a meeting place for California’s most colorful community of progressive and creative minds. When did the Hollywood store open its doors? 11/17/2001. What made you decide to venture into music retail? We love music and wanted to share what we love. Love the community of a record store and being with people that love music as much as we do. How does Amoeba stand out from the rest? A huge, vast selection across all genres. We don't just concentrate on indie and electronica and hip hop, but also have great jazz/ classical/oldies, etc. We have one of the biggest DVD selections. And we have always stood behind vinyl. We knew vinyl was not going anywhere and have almost as much vinyl as we do CDs. So you don’t cater to anything specifically? We cater to everything. We still have a great VHS section along with laserdiscs, 7"s, audio cassettes, 78's. And we concentrate on all genres! From black metal to christian rock! Does Amoeba handle releases differently than other stores? Most indie stores do most of the same. We stand behind releases we really like by having individual buyers for all the genres. We promote albums with reviews and blogs on the website and have big and little in-stores to support the artists we like. We also have employees that like to talk about their favorite albums and actually share them with customers. How would you describe your average customer? Mostly the 20-50 crowd, but really all kinds of people. More and more young people are showing up to buy new albums on vinyl. And we also still have all the collectors that have never stopped buying actual music. Lastly, what are some of your favorite Redeye releases? Booka Shade, Red Sparowes, Phantogram, Sharon Jones and Grizzly Bear.
