Overview

Artist: DRC Music Title: Kinshasa One Two 11.8.2011

In July 2011, DRC Music - a collective of producers led by Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz) - headed to Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo to make a record with contemporary Congolese musicians. DRC Music is comprised of producers: T-E-E-D (Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs), Dan The Automator, Jneiro Jarel, Richard Russell, Actress, Marc Antoine, Alwest, Remi Kabaka, Rodaidh McDonald and Kwes. Each of them has donated their time and waived all royalties to this work.

WARPCD221 / WARPLP221

The sounds created were completely different to normal instrumentation because the local instruments were primarily homemade from whatever was available. As Dan the Automator said, “The equipment they created to make music was amazing. The drive and spirit to create with whatever was available was the highlight to me – old fans, tins, tree trunks, homemade drums, metal rods.” The Democratic Republic of Congo has long been wracked by conflict and is home to one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. Proceeds from the album will benefit the local performers and Oxfam's work in Congo. Oxfam fights poverty and suffering in DRC through the empowerment of individuals and communities based on their rights, such as the right to clean water or to live in safety. Oxfam has been in DRC for 50 years and now has more than 350 staff in projects across the country, responding to emergency situations in order to save lives.

LAURA VEIRS Tumble Bee

STREET DATE: 11/8/2011

“I love this record,” says acclaimed songwriter Sufjan Stevens. “Laura's folk songs for children proves that the best children's music never gets old.” Tumble Bee, the first children’s record from the prolific Laura Veirs, inspires listeners to lean in close and hit replay. The youthful innocence in Veirs’ voice lends itself well to the jaunty spirit of the album, a collection of American folk songs. She and renown record-producer Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, My Morning Jacket, Sufjan Stevens), her long-time collaborator on seven of her eight records, have created a piece of art that is sure to appeal to children as well as adult fans of Veirs’ previous work. As Smithsonian Folkways recording artist Elizabeth Mitchell says, "This is a luminous, smart, essential and truly extraordinary album." Inspired by the birth of her son and by countless fans who’ve told her over the years how much their kids love her records, Veirs became curious about the history of American children’s music. She and Martine listened to hundreds of songs from the past several centuries, including Harry Smith’s famous Anthology of American Folk Music. They selected what Veirs calls, “a sampling that reflects our richness as a people.” Tumble Bee was recorded at home in the Spring of 2011. “Many of these songs have been forgotten throughout the years,” says Martine. “We wanted to bring these beloved songs to a new generation with an instrumentation that both honors their traditions and creates something unique.” A joyous testament to this collective history, Tumble Bee embodies both the uplifting and fearful moments of childhood. Listeners of all ages will revel in Veirs in her prime.

HIGHLIGHTS • Guest appearances by Colin Meloy (The Decemberists), Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Bela Fleck, Karl Blau and others. • Full scale PR campaign by Tiny Human (Ever Kipp) and Beth Blenz-Clucas (Specialty Childrens Music Publicist) • Radio by Dauntless Promotion (Monsters of Folk, Andrew Bird, M. Ward) • Two tours of major markets in 2012

STEVE AZAR

What is Delta Soul ? It’s a style of music born in the people that come from the Mississippi Delta. It tells the stories of a hard life, the mixing of cultures and race, poverty and pride. It’s about earning a meager living from the cotton crop, or the long hours on the Mississippi river. The music of the Delta has influenced some of the greatest rock and blues music of all time. Eric Clapton, The Stones, Paul Simon, Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top and so many others have been inspired by the sounds that resonate deep in its very soil. “Delta Soul” is the music from a man born and raised in the heart of it all. It’s a mix of the sounds and musical lessons he learned growing up in Greenville, MS. It’s honest and pure, the lyrics are a journey through the places he’s been and the people he’s known. It’s the stories shared by family, friends and blues legends he knew. Steve Azar mixes his Delta roots with blues, rock and soul, and a little touch of twang to create his sound, "Delta Soul". It’s the music of Steve Azar found on his new CD, “Delta Soul volume one”. A collection of songs that take you along on Steve’s musical journey through his life in the Mississippi Delta. A great listen start to finish.

You’ve known Steve Azar as the chart-topping country singer-songwriter. “I Don’t Have To Be Me til’ Monday” is one of the Top 5 most played songs of the last decade at country radio. If you have ever seen him live, his show has always been more than 50% blues / rock music influenced by his growing up in the Mississippi Delta. Schooled by Eugene Powell (Sonny Boy Nelson) and Little Milton, Azar learned the Delta Blues from an early age. Sitting on a crate behind his dad’s liquor store, Steve got to hear it and learn it from his mentors. Walking off stage at the Delta Blues Festival in Greenville, MS after playing a tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughn with James “Son” Thomas, and having Mr. Albert King say to Steve, “Hey kid, you got it!”, “Now what you gonna do with it?” Azar has always worn his Delta Roots on his sleeve, never hide it in his music, there has always been the influence in there. Now it’s time to just take it all the way and do his brand of music, Delta Soul.

Zenph Sound Innovations presents

RELEASE DATE: NovEMbER 8, 2011

The SpaniSh MaSTerS “What the Zenph team has done is bordering on the miraculous.” -Dr. Milton Laufer, noted pianist and world expert on Spanish composers

The Spanish Masters shines a spotlight on famed Iberian composers Albéniz, Granados and Falla. Although these gentlemen died more than sixty years ago, they were recorded anew in 2011 performing their own works at the piano, alongside cellist Zuill Bailey and soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian. How was this possible? Through the magic of groundbreaking technology, the original audio recordings of these Spanish masters were transformed back into live performances. This recording combines classical music royalty with two of the most vibrant stars in classical music today, to create a dazzling, blockbuster recording that serious music fans and audiophiles will want for their collection. Zuill Bailey has established himself as one of the most sought-after musicians performing today. Likewise, Canadian-Armenian soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian is an international opera sensation and has appeared on stage at the world’s premier opera houses. The original recordings of Albéniz were recorded in 1903 by Edison gramophone on wax cylinders; the original Granados cylinders originate from 1912. From those delicate cylinders, stunning new re-performances were created using cutting-edge technology, along with the most modern recording equipment and production. This album is the fifth offering from Zenph Sound Innovations, a music technology company based in Durham, North Carolina. The company creates proprietary software and algorithms to transform recorded music into very sophisticated data, describing precisely how musicians perform. From this data, recordings can be “re-performed” with astonishing fidelity. The company’s work was named one of the “Best Ideas of the Year” by The New York Times Magazine and has received multiple GRAMMY® nominations. The editor of Stereophile magazine described Zenph’s Rachmaninoff Plays Rachmaninoff album as “one of the finest piano recordings ever made.” Selling PoinTS : • Zuill Bailey and isabel Bayrakdarian are international recording stars with a built-in fan base and heavy worldwide touring schedules. • The Spanish Masters marks the first full album in Zenph re-performance history in which superstar contemporary musicians collaborate with historic artists. • This album is a high-water mark for Zenph Technology – a world-famous cellist and soprano playing alongside the most renowned Spanish composers, recorded at a brand new, state-of-the-art studio (Manifold Recording). • Zenph Sound innovations’ work was named one of the “Best ideas of the Year” by The new York Times and has received multiple gRaMMY® nominations. • The company has earned accolades from critics the world over, including The Wall Street Journal, The los angeles Times, The Washington Post, Stereophile, The absolute Sound, national Public Radio, the CBC and the BBC. • Full press mailing will be serviced to all classical, lifestyle and audiophile outlets.

One of the most important bands of the late ‟60s and early ‟70s! The rock act that made a stray Bowie song into an anthem for a generation and beyond! A singer with recognisable hair and ever-present shades! Mott The Hoople are perhaps known to all music fans, but what of their story? The Ballad of Mott the Hoople is a feature length documentary that tells the story of of one of England‟s most cherished rock „n‟ roll bands. The film brings the band‟s story to life through a stunning combination of rare and unseen archive footage, their magnificent music and the testimony of band members Ian Hunter, Mick Ralphs, Verden Allen, Dale “Buffin” Griffin, Luther Grosvenor aka Ariel Bender, Morgan Fisher plus other associates and witnesses, including The Clash‟s Mick Jones, Queen‟s Roger Taylor and Mott “Seadivers” fanclub president Kris Needs. Running Time: 101 Minutes. Detailing the whole story up to the band imploding at the height of their fame The Ballad Of Mott The Hoople chronicles and evaluates (in the artists‟ own words) this very unique history and the lasting impression that Mott made on their peers and the younger groups that followed in their wake. It's all here, from their early encounters with the troubled, yet visionary Svengali Guy Stevens, the astounding music which followed to the band‟s witty, honest and frank recollections of the crazy circumstances that whisked them from Hereford to the bright lights of London, America and world level rock stardom. In 2009 the group reformed to play a reunion show at The Hammersmith Apollo to a packed audience that included such deities as Jimmy Page. The only available film footage of this legendary return to glory is available on this DVD! Although a rock combo that saw guitar gods Mick Ralphs, Ariel Bender and Mick Ronson pass through their ranks, Mott The Hoople never succumbed to guitar histrionics above the substance of songs. Ian Hunter‟s lyrics combined Dylan‟s mid-60s poetry with the band‟s Stonesy vibe, a Velvet Underground sneer and a sound that helped pave the way for the punk movement. Indeed, „Crash Street Kidds‟ from 1974‟s The Hoople more than hints at what was around the corner! The Ballad Of Mott The Hoople talking head and punk hero, The Clash‟s Mick Jones, has been quoted saying “I suppose my main guitar influences are Mott The Hoople, The Kinks and the Stones.” The Clash song „Julie‟s In The Drug Squad‟ was a clear homage to the majesty of the Hoople! Most British musical gods of a certain age were touched and inspired by the hand of Mott The Hoople. They had attitude and made gawky teenage boys see the possibilities in being different. Morrisey, who pens the sleeve notes for this DVD, is a huge fan. Too often cast off as one hit wonders by the musically illiterate or as glam or “classic rock” by the ill informed, Mott The Hoople were a one of a kind British rock ‟n' roll explosion who in combining the rootsy rock of the Stones and The Faces, the unbridled punkishness of early Kinks and the intelligence of Dylan and Bowie still sound valid and fitting for a new audience in 2011. The Ballad Of The Mott The Hoople is not only a fascinating documentary, whose cast are a testament to the music, it is also a heart warming saga of the ascendency and decline of a group who were ploughing a musical landscape across a period in cultural history that was generally breaking new ground. If anything will gain them the lasting respect they deserve it is this thoughtful, provoking and enjoyable film. The DVD includes a 12-page booklet featuring liner notes by Morrissey, a limited edition set of 5-postcards and over one hour of bonus material: DVD Extras/Bonus Features : 1. 2009 Hammersmith Reunion Unseen live footage from the triumphant 40th anniversary at Hammersmith Apollo in 2009 – „Rock „n‟ Roll Queen‟, „The Moon Upstairs‟ and „I Wish I was Your Mother‟. 2. Overview

Artist: Brian Eno Title: Panic of Looking

From the recordings that produced Drums Between the Bells – the acclaimed collaboration between Brian Eno and British poet Rick Holland – comes an all new EP titled Panic Of Looking. The 6 tracks continue the exploration of how lyric & song-writing are perceived in the post-everything era. As the Sunday Times (UK) suggests, “the poems aren’t sung, yet the pieces are undeniably songlike, first because the music refuses to act simply as background, but lurches frequently, sometimes unexpected to the fore, and second because we hear the meaning of the words in the way we normally pick up song lyrics,” while WIRED Magazine calls Eno’s soundscapes, “a tapestry of pillowy synths, minorkey melodies, chiming guitars and skittering drums.” All of these elements come together for the November 8th release of the EP, which was produced by Eno and features his original artwork on vinyl, CD & digital formats.

Having created three elaborate albums between 1992 and 1997, (Shoulder Voices and Horsedrawn Wishes with Rollerskate Skinny and Dead City Sunbeams with Kid Silver), it was off to New York for Ken Griffin. His previous work was written largely in response to the lack of excitement and colour in a difficult Dublin and a grim London. Those 3 albums were works of fantasy and desperation. New York offered the same escape that music had given him as a child. At their first practice Griffin was shocked to find the band had already taken his songs and shaped them into the type of “thunderous, plain beauty” he had dreamt of. “It was so moving. The band was already playing the songs with such confidence and commitment. All I had to do was pick up the microphone and sing,” he remembers. A few weeks later, the Sons decided to play some shows. “I was terrified,” admits Griffin. “In the past, I could always hide behind my guitar and a wall of noise and samples. But at these shows, I just had to stand out there, close my eyes and sing.” The Sons recorded their debut album Down Beside Your Beauty in Brooklyn with acclaimed studio wiz Victor Van Vugt (PJ Harvey, The Fall, The Pogues) to mix it. “There are so many apologetic undertones hidden in the way bands play nowadays, says Werth. “This is not that at all. This is something right from the battlefield.” Down Beside Your Beauty was written during a time of great loss in Kens life, which, frankly, overshadowed any real desire to create art. The result was a raw spill of emotion, which had and has its merits, but was a bit of a step off the artistic path he had been on. This second album The Great Deal Of Love was recorded with Mike Demming (known for his work on The Pernice Brothers Overcome By Happiness), Griffin reached out (from NYC) to some friends across the Atlantic with a mass mail and ended up with The Great Deal Of Love coming out on a rejuvenated Low Rent Recordings in Ireland, these has lead to the band going to Ireland for major festivals this Summer and playing shows with The Frames where both bands communed for a version of Rollerskate Skinny’s Speed To Me Side. The Irish Independent called it “a real and brilliant grower”, with Hot Press giving it four stars and declaring that “these songs testify to a life lived arse-backwards.” hIGhLIGhTS Full US tour as support to BellX1 in November Press campaign by Nick Loss-Eaton TouR SuPPoRTING beLL x1 November 2011 01 02 03 05 07 09 11 12 13 16 18 19 21

Zun Zun Egui Katang

national Release Date: CD: 11/08/2011 Simon Raymonde (Bella Union/Cocteau Twins) on Zun Zun Egui…. News travel pretty fast in the A&R world which is why I try never go to the same gigs anyone else in the label scene is going to, and have, in 15 years of doing this, only been in competition, knowingly, with one other label for an artist! There's enough bands to go around, and the idea of standing at a London show next to every other scout or A&R dude in the land seems rather silly to me. And so it was 12 years ago when I began to make regular visits Austin Texas to SXSW. There were just a handful of UK peeps out there and it really was as easy as walking into a deserted bar and walking out having found (and signed) the most incredible band (I did this for example in 2001 with the legendary, incendiary Lift to Experience, from down-the-road-Denton who I saw in a Taco Shack at 4pm in a black thunderstorm). In 2011, things could not be more different. There are so many UK label folks out there now for SXSW, (probably more Englishmen than Americans!) that is it normal for a fellow Londoner to avoid speaking to me for a whole year and then mailing me at the beginning of March and saying 'hey dude, you going to SXSW, we should meet up?'. Yeah we COULD, or..we could just not bother, cos I can see you any day of the week here, dude!

Through the success of our American bands like Fleet Foxes, Midlake, Andrew Bird -- whose records we put out in the UK – well, Midlake we put out in the US too -- the label often gets labelled 'folkie' which seems most bizarre to me. Explosions in The Sky, Wavves, Beach House, Lawrence Arabia, Veronica Falls, I Break Horses, are most certainly not folk. I even signed a Nova Scotia rapper called Josh Martinez, and released two classical piano albums, so I tend to ignore such lame generalizations, and get on with trying to discover music that makes my jaw drop to the floor, and mouth obscenities along the lines of 'holy fuck what was that' or the more printable' goodness gracious missus, cop a load of that!' Such profanity dripped from my lips late on the final night of SXSW 2010 in the most unlikely of locations, in a small lounge room on the ground floor of the marvellously opulent Driskill Hotel on 6th Street. The band in question that provoked my reaction was Zun Zun Egui, a brilliantly original group from Bristol in the UK. I had been hearing amazing things from friends for a while about their prowess as a live band and I liked the fact that they didnt have much stuff available online, and seemed to be playing things cool and at their own pace. The stuff I HAD heard was raw and exciting and I was seriously keen to check them out in Austin but they didnt seem to playing any official shows, so I was gutted. Then in the evening, word got to me that ZZE were playing later at the Driskill, their only show in Austin! It was midnight and I'd been on my feet since 9am, which in Austin if youre seeing as many people and bands as I usually do, is really far more heroic than it sounds on paper! Within 3 seconds of them walking on stage, I knew I loved them and wanted to sign them. That doesn’t happen so often! Visually, they are a treat. Not many bands are. They were SO different from all the other bands that were being touted around as 'the best thing of sxsw' that year. You could dance to it too! The best way to describe them, because in many ways they are indescribable, is to illustrate what I 'feel' when I see them live. Think: the frenetic choppy funk guitars of The Pop Group, the elegant brutality of the basslines of Luke Mosse which could be inspired by Bitches Brew by Miles Davis, the deep soul and heart of African and Pacific sounds, part-King Sunny Ade, part-Martin Denny, and they also ROCK at glorious moments with the kinda riffs pouring out of Kushal Gaya's guitar, that Jimmy Page or Dave Navarro would probably love, all driven along by superb drumming of Matthew Jones and hypnotic synths from Yoshino, the band's keyboard player and designer of their art and choreographer of their dancing (see brilliant new video for Fandango Fresh). Bands usually form out of their love of a sound, but it's clear this band are here because they LOVE playing together. All with very different tastes, this could create one unholy mess, yet it never does. I came away from their explosive Driskill show feeling like I had seen the Sex Pistols. It was for all its musicality and technical ability, as punk rock as it gets. Annoying cameramen bugging Kushal, gets a polite warning to move back as his camera invades the small stage getting right up in Kush's face. Then whilst STILL playing amazing guitar and singing too, he managed to beat the shit out of this total prick and carry on as if nothing happened. I was like YESSSSSSS!! A band with spunk. A band of real people with passion and commitment. Smart, and thoughtful people. The kind of people you dream to work with. So from the most exciting live band I saw at SXSW 2010 by a country mile, and now on the eve of the release of KATANG their debut lp on Bella Union, as the UK magazine The Stool Pigeo says 'this is the most exciting debut album of the year', I am proud to introduce the band to you TRaCk LisTing 01. GENRE : FOLK/POP FILE UNDER: “R” Roberts, Luke The debut album by Brooklyn’s own Luke Roberts is an intimate and immediate experience. Songs about running, stumbling, falling, crashing, crying, spitting, fighting, sleeping, dancing, healing, bruising, the butterfly, crawling, creeping, building, flying, fording, gargling, just starting out, homecoming, claiming, calling, bridges, tunnels, planets, and the sun and money. Essentially they are just gifts for Luke’s loved ones. Luke says it best: “They are poems that I didn’t feel comfortable not reciting before I go.” Big Bells and Dime Songs was recorded by Kyle Spence (Harvey Milk) in his Ronniejone$ound Studio in Athens, Georgia. This was Luke’s first trip to a studio. Kyle also played drums and some bass on the record. They had never met prior to the recording of this record. Luke got his name and number from a fellow cook and Harvey Milk member. (Thrill Jockey got Luke’s music from another cook.) “Luke Roberts is the type of guy who’ll get on a Greyhound bus with a forty dollar acoustic guitar and travel 800 miles to go and record an album with somebody he’s never met. And he likes Arby’s.” “When I think about this album, I don’t really think about how quickly we did it or how much fun it was or how satisfied we were with the way it turned out... I think about how much Luke likes Arby’s.” “Sometimes you get a chance to work with someone that can really open your mind and cause you to reconsider what’s truly important. Luke Roberts is one of those people and I can’t say what I’d think about Arby’s right now if I hadn’t made this record with him.” “At one point during the recording of the album I asked Luke why none of his songs had any changes. He said “Man, I know. Every time I try to add a second part in one of them I think ‘man, that’s cheesy’ and I take it back out.” I agreed with him and then he suggested that we go to Arby’s.” - Kyle Spence (Harvey Milk)

we were exploding anyway

65daysofstatic Deluxe edition with bonus ‘Heavy Sky’ EP – Features guest vocals from Robert Smith of The Cure 65daysofstatic – the name still shrouded in inspirational ambiguity, the band still one of the most arresting live acts on the circuit – arrive at album four reborn. Following years of incessant touring, and three albums in as many years, a break in momentum has given them the breathing space necessary to revaluate their artistry, to focus on fresh ambitions and reach for them. From the underground, over; out of the basements and into the light: this is the Sheffield quartet as you’ve never heard them before. The four – Joe Shrewsbury, Paul Wolinski, Rob Jones and Simon Wright – scored an unlikely hit in 2004 with their debut album, The Fall Of Math. A critical success, it launched the band into a new league of recognition; here, they would hone their sound, transforming from studio operatives crafting rave music for rockers into a rock band impossible not to rave to. Live, they excelled. Audiences swelled. Album two, 2005’s One Time For All Time, furthered their already enviable reputation. Audiences got larger still. In 2007 they released The Destruction Of Small Ideas – album three was supported not only by domestic treks up motorways and down A roads, but also by worldwide touring alongside The Cure. The ante had been upped. Those audiences… Those audiences damn well exploded. But then, silence. A pause. Stasis for the ‘static. Rediscovery of music that passed them by before – Daft Punk, house music, hedonism over IDM headaches – and a prolonged period of writing where new ideas could exert substantial pressure on the old. September 2008 signalled the beginning of the end for 65days as they were – where interviewers would ask after the pros and cons of being pigeonholed a post-rock band – and the dawn of something wholly unexpected, against type and beyond bold. Audacious, disregarding of former glories, We Were Exploding Anyway is 65days anew. This is not a rock band with a bit of glitch on the side, all guitars with the slightest semblance of high-BPM beat-craft as underlay; it’s a not-so-distant dance party, the purest euphoria as earworms that dig deep and nestle tight. It’s an armsaloft salute to the thrill of letting yourself go in the tide, and riding that rush ‘til it leaves you breathless but so prepared to go around again. Were Exploding Anyway is a game-changer from a band that has only ever followed its own rules, and now they’re broken. Don’t pick up the pieces. Leave them. Dance over them. This time, and for all time, and those audiences… Those audiences were exploding anyway www.65daysofstatic.com

The Skull Defekts (featuring Daniel Higgs & Zomes) 2013 - 3012 Thrill - 12.48 Limited 12”EP $15.99 BOX LOT LP 40 Vinyl is non-returnable

GENRE : ROCK FILE UNDER: “S” Skull Defekts, The “H” Higgs, Daniel “Z” Zomes

Release Date: Nov 8, 2011

In April 2011, The Skull Defekts toured the US to celebrate the release of the Peer Amid album on Thrill Jockey Records, a record where the Swedish core of the band was completed by the presence of Daniel Higgs on vocals. The band decided to invite Higgs’ old Lungfish companion Asa Osborne and his Zomes project to open for them on tour. It didn’t take long for them to find each other in friendship and a common belief in the power of music and sound. The Skull Defekts and Zomes have different ways of presenting this belief but it was clear to everyone attending these intense shows that the artists did share something special, beautiful, and rare. When the crew found themselves with a cancelled show midway through the tour, they luckily were at Machines With Magnets where they had played a show the night before - a great studio in Pawtucket, RI (previously used by bands like Battles and The Psychic Paramount). The studio had just ended a recording session and the band entered for an explosive and extremely creative one day session. Two new songs were written and recorded, and another one that had been played on the tour was put to tape... The Skull Defekts and Zomes in Pawtucket, RI. Something beautiful, something strong and important was there, and these six men succeeded in documenting it with the great help of Seth Manchester and Keith Souza. Sometimes magic happens. This was one of those moments.

2013 - 3012 is a brand new 12” vinyl only release that follows the Peer Amid album (Thrill 260, Feb 2011) and features The Skull Defekts joined by both Daniel Higgs and Zomes The A side consists of three new songs while the B side is a reverse cut done on a Scully Lathe. We were told that there were only a handful of mastering facilities with an operating Scully lathe in the United states. We could only find one. The B Side is not only a reverse recording of the A side - but literally PLAYS BACKWARDS from the inside of the record to the outside 2013 - 3012 is limited to only 1,000 vinyl copies worldwide and includes a free download coupon. These are not expected to last long as the Peer Amid vinyl sold out very quick earlier this year These three new tracks were recorded during the band’s US tour in support of Peer Amid The Skull Defekts are one of the centerpieces of Sweden’s experimental rock scene. Daniel Higgs is the lyricist and frontman of Lungfish and has a very extensive catalog of solo material. Zomes is the solo work of Asa Osborne (Lungfish, The Pupils). “The Skull Defekts rhythmic, muscular, psychedelic use of drone, raga, ritualistic repetition, circularity, and noise works perfectly with Higgs’ Lungfish and solo trajectories.” - Stereogum “Peer Amid is a fierce, hypnotic slice of rage and cosmic searching... Songs like “Fragrant Nimbus” spin wildly (but not out of control), creating some kind of space music best visible with use of the third eye. Other tracks approach a Wolf Eyes-ish howling assault, but with a ferocious, tribal drum backbone. Packed in the middle of this melee you’ll find “In Majestic Drag,” the band’s most crushing, metal-forged statement yet. Peer Amid is the ultimate soundtrack for fighting your way to enlightenment.” - Filter

Death-In-Life is the fifth album released in Matthew Friedberger’s 2011 six album series Solos. Death-In-Life was made with organ and Matt’s vocals. “Matt” is Rock-n-Roll musician and songwriter Matthew Friedberger, a Chicagoan. Mr. Friedberger considers R-n-R an anti-vocational sphere of endeavor, as is obvious from its epithet, so spelled, Q.E.D. Therefore a C.V. is drastically inappropriate. But or so: since 2003, Friedberger has released eight albums with the band he runs with his sister Eleanor, The Fiery Furnaces. The band is planning to record its ninth album before Christmas upcoming. Perhaps the group’s catchiest and most aggressive effort to date, arranged as a concerto for Drum Kit and String Orchestra, this as yet untitled effort may contain such songs as “I met the Queen of the Night in the daytime”, “I was so confused”, “The City of the Sun”, “As insufficient as an Eskimo’s kimono”. And many more. His six record set, Solos in which he plays only a single given instrument per album (though not necessarily the same actual individual example of the single given instrument), is designed to illustrate the following Cretan-Lacedaemonian principle. Every group of instruments against every other group of instruments; every instrument against every other instrument; and especially, every instrument against itself, all alone. See Laws, Book 1, 626 d. This idea jibes quite well with certain notions that have often been thought constitutively American, no doubt unfortunately. Friedberger thinks it therefore illuminating to apply this principle to such a pre-eminently American music as the aforementioned R-n-R. Despite the fact that this application is no doubt already ongoing.

Matthew Friedberger is one half of The Fiery Furnaces. Death-In-Life is the fifth of six full length albums Matthew Friedberger will release in 2011 as part of his Solos series. This album features Matt’s voice and organ The Solos series has been previewed extensively by Altered Zones, Entertainment Weekly, Spin Magazine, Pitchfork, Stereogum, AV Club, The Village Voice and many other outlets.

Mr. Friedberger will again be scoring the Guggenheim’s production of Rob Pruitt presents: The Art Awards, an awards event and performance piece conceived and co-ordinated by the artist Rob Pruitt. This second annual event will take place in New York at Webster Hall on December 9th. The music this year will refer to Webster Hall’s history of various like amusements, up to and including its period as The Ritz. But no further.

Death-In-Life was recorded in Paris, France and mastered by Joe Lambert at JLM Sound in New York

Mr. Friedberger is at work on a book called The Progressive Use of Popular Culture 1: Music. In this work, about the same length as Jason Alexander’s non-existent Acting without Acting, he attempts to advance--or exaggerate--the egalitarian potential of the irreducibly esoteric nature of the popular arts. He considers Rock-n-Roll, or Rock ‘n Roll, or Rock, or This Thing, to be the Queen, or King, or Tyrant of Indeterminate Gender, of the Popular Arts. The word Tyrant in the last sentence is meant to include a sense of necessary illegitimacy.

“Cut it Out utilizes a varied palette of acoustic and electronic percussion, harmonized vocals, and free-form singspiel into a softly mutating mosaic, proving the ludicrously prolific Friedberger to be as unpredictable as ever.” - Altered Zones

“Friedberger throws himself at it with such joyous abandon that one would think he’d been kept from it months against his will.” - Under The Radar

POLINSKI A debut album of beats and noise from 65daysofstatic’s Paul Wolinski After ten years (give or take) on the road and on the record with 65daysofstatic, Paul Wolinski finally steps out from behind that particular outfit’s notorious smokescreen and emerges as POLINSKI, a man with a laptop, some synths and a plan, in the metaphysical sense of the word. In our childhood bedrooms and minds, the possibilities were always endless, there were worlds within worlds, and galaxies upon galaxies. If the suburbs outside seemed limited by how far we could get on our bikes, then in the real and unreal realities of space travel and science fiction we were satiated, if only momentarily. What if your bike could take off? And it is to there that POLINSKI has returned, to soundtrack the impossible possibilities of the sci-fi mentality. Says Wolinski “This is basically an album I daydreamed of writing back when I was 15 and just learning how to program MIDI...lots of beats and distortion and piano and big melodies, with a dance-y toughness.” Written in-between or on tour, this is the sound of software catching up with what the mind is capable of, the simple joy of the back of a van and a laptop, an airport lounge and a head between timezones, lightspeed drifting between futures, the futures we glimpse out of the window of the flimsy vessels we trust our lives to, the futures we dream of in the hotel room after one too many in-flight drinks-in-the-sky.

RELEASE DATE 11/08/11

“Polinski is poised to strike gold on his first outing” – The Silent Ballet top pick of Electronic music Fall preview

Feeding himself a steady diet of 70s and 80s sci-fi movies and endless 2nd hand paperbacks from the golden era of sci-fi publishing, and free of the myopic shortcomings of writing music in a room with 3 other people, this is music that is unconstrained in its search for warp speed, the 1.21 gigawatts that launches the listener back to the future. Examining the impulse that feeds the creative urge is a dangerous thing to do, especially in these cynical post-everything times, but taking that pulse is not. If sci-fi is the best metaphor for all that could not be articulated in the solitary bedrooms of our formative years, then music is its best simile. ‘LABYRINTHS’ may not be able to tell you how existence feels, but it can let you hear it. And some things are better left unsaid.

CAT# CD/LP:

If this sounds heavy, then it is, but that would sell short the upbeat nature of Polinski’s current output. We may be headed for a black hole, but we may as well dance as the planets explode. – Joe Shrewsbury, 65daysofstatic

things.yes

M+A M+A is Michele Ducci, 19, (vocals, instruments) and Alessandro Degli Angioli, 22, (instruments) from Forli, Italy. They create inventive, spirited electronic pop. In their own words: We listen to music to understand what we do, and we do music to understand what we listen to. We record everything at home, in a mansard to be more precise. The “home-made” policy corresponds to a definite aesthetics, particularly with regard to a pop range. It’s like a scene from a thriller movie where, at the very crucial moment, there’s a shot of the director and his assistants while setting up the play set. So yes, we do make pop, but with the unpretentious intention to thrill. Our band is made up by two components, not merged in a unique identity, but rather coexisting. Sticking to the common sense of the word, we never really felt like a group. With its naivety and brutality, M+A plainly represents our initials just to make the whole thing more tangible and real. It’s two people moving forward parallel one another, though with countless meeting points. There is no real language, it’s unnecessary for what we’re trying to do. At the moment, stories don’t appeal to us. We look for coolness without those usual subterfuges of meaning or mysterious words. We don’t want to say anything nor teach it. We only want to leave something where anyone can feel or imagine what he wants. And use it as deemed most convenient. This way “the song event” becomes completely collective. Who listens is not only important, but essential. We provide forms, and who listens creates contents. The song doesn’t end with us, and becomes itself a base of departure and not of arrival. It’s so funny to make a fool of the person who listens, just through what is acknowledged as the universal language, English exactly. We’re so used to hearing words that we can’t even listen to them. It could be also read as a criticism in action of the “ear spectator”. However, the interesting thing about it is to make use only of the “sounds” of a language, and then observe how the listener combines them into actual forms. Therefore it appears, if not a comprehension, an inclination to grasp how on the one hand it frees the listener from us, but on the other hand it makes him come closer. Taking a step backwards to move closer to the others. www. http://www.ma-official.com • www.facebook.com/ma.thingsyes www.twitter.com/ma_thingsyes • www.myspace.com/masoundtrack Tracklisting 1. Available as originally intended with the same track listing as the debut LP.

ORCHESTRA OF SPHERES —Nonagonic Now FORMAT - CD/LP LABEL - Fire Records UPC-CD:809236124722 / LP:809236124715 CATALOG#-CD: FIRECD247 / LP: FIRELP247 LIST PRICE - CD: $17.99 / LP: $22.99 Although distinctly their own, the band's sound draws on influences far and wide, with echoes of African rhythms, free jazz textures, electronic dance music, krautrock and Indonesian gamelan music. 'Nonagonic Now' was recorded at the fittingly named Frederick Street Sound and Light Exploration Society, a venue run collectively by the band and others in the Wellington creative music scene. Creative and exploratory it certainly is, to a dazzling level matched only by the sequins and shine of their radiating costumes. If Orchestra Of Spheres illuminate themselves as a stellar, cosmic form, this record is grounded to this earth by a strong rhythmic force, which pumps continually from the opener 'Hypercube'. Setting a subconscious canon for the rest of the album that weaves in and out of tracks, it emerges in hypnotic guise on 'Rotate' and as space funk on

'Hypersphere'.

WALTON —Walton EP FORMAT - 12” LABEL - Hyperdub UPC - 5055300329899 CATALOG # - HDB053 LIST PRICE - $10.99 Sam Walton is the 20 year old Mancunian producer behind this Hyperdub debut, an EP exploring four original experiments with the funky house sound, always keeping the emphasis on energy. ‘Aggy’ kicks things off by perfectly blending the raw, hard aggression of grime with the tight disciplined micro-syncopations of funky house. ‘Mangled Riddim’ runs a bassline that sounds like a rubber band being twanged accompanied by spacious toms and 808 kicks and claps, while ‘808 Vibzin’s mix of swinging 808 claps and claviers with sunshine synths and xylophone sounds like classic blissed out Midwest 90s house music. ‘Skrilla’ on the other hand mixes tough off-beat funky drums and rhythmic stabs, simultaneously recalling grime’s sparseness and the chilly toughness of Northern bleep house.

Ralfe Band - ‘Bunny and the Bull’ OST CD STREET DATE: November 8th, 2011 Jewel case with 12-page booklet

VINYL STREET DATE: December 6th, 2011 Limited edition of 300, hand-numbered, gatefold sleeve

Ralfe Band have announced the North American release of their already acclaimed original soundtrack to the film Bunny and the Bull (Warp Films, out now on DVD and Blu-ray). Ralfe Band is the brainchild of British songwriter/composer Oliver Ralfe who has released two Ralfe Band albums in the UK and Europe, Swords (Skint 2005) and Attic Thieves (Loose Music/Talitres 2008), followed by the soundtrack for Bunny and the Bull. Discovered in 2004 by John Peel who said of them “It’s difficult to tell who they’ve been listening to…”, the band has earned high critical praise, toured widely across Europe and played many festivals including Reading and Leeds and two main stages at Glastonbury. British feature film Bunny and the Bull is a comedy road movie set entirely in an apartment. An extraordinary visual feast from the director of The Mighty Boosh and featuring the crème-de-la-crème of British comedy talent including Noel Fielding, Julian Barratt and Richard Ayoade (Submarine), Bunny and the Bull is one of a recent batch of productions from Warp Films that also includes This Is England, Four Lions and Submarine. Says Oliver Ralfe, “The film creates its own unique visual world, so I also aimed to create a similarly self-contained soundtrack. The music is meant to have a magical, unreal quality, like the film itself.” Recorded in the dead of winter, isolated and snowed in, the soundtrack follows the travels of the two main characters across Europe, featuring a good deal of piano, electronic pieces and some classical themes embellished with strings, alongside folk and gypsy influences with mandolin, accordion, viola and trumpets. Continues Ralfe, “I really wanted to create a soundtrack album. I’ve always enjoyed sitting down, listening to them and going on a strange journey in your head. So having finished work on the film, I spent a couple of months producing the album. I enjoyed having themes re-emerging within the album almost like a classical piece.” Of working with Ralfe Band, film writer/director Paul King said, “They were the best of collaborators. I'd made suggestions of where I wanted music and given them vague references. They'd completely ignored me, done their own thing, and I never wanted to change a note. It's blindingly, blisteringly, barnstormingly better than I could ever have imagined - and the one thing about the film I would never, ever want to change.” Oliver Ralfe is also an award-winning filmmaker. His documentary film The Ballad of AJ Weberman about the infamous Bob Dylan fanatic was filmed in New York and premiered at Slamdance Film Festival 2007, before winning the Raindance Award at the British Independent Film Awards and most recently screening on BBC4 in the UK for Dylan’s 70th birthday. Oliver’s second feature documentary The Mighty Boosh On Tour Journey Of The Childmen follows the cult comedians on their 99-date UK tour. The film premiered in the USA at the Cinefamily in Los Angeles and 92Y Tribeca in NYC where Oliver introduced the film to an army of comedy fans. Ralfe also creates artwork for Ralfe Band’s releases, and an animated video based on his drawings and created for the single “Women of Japan” won the award for Best International Music Video at SXSW 2006. Oliver and his band also make several cameo appearances in seasons 1 – 3 of television show The Mighty Boosh.

"The 22 tracks here recall the deft melancholy of the ‘Amelie’ soundtrack... The kind of regally drunk spirit last heard on David Dundas' equally fine ‘Withnail & I’ soundtrack. Score!" 8/10 NME "The real test of any score is its ability to survive independent of the movie and Oliver Ralfe's piano-heavy work manages that easily... It's alternately sweetly hushed, spooky and sad, tapping Bernard Herrmann, Tom Waits, Danny Elfman, European folk and gypsy song traditions in a bewitchingly evocative collection." a sound that is distinctly Factor.

Factor is - without question - the hardest working, most prolific producer in Canada today. There's no taking it away from him. So far this year he has produced tracks for Myka 9, Moka Only, Ceschi, Isaiah Toothtaker, Sunspot Jonz, Sole, Noah23, Kay the Aquanaut, Mic King and more, as well as full length albums with Awol One and his project with Kirby Dominant, Paranoid Castle. All of these projects showcase Factor's versatility as a producer as he effortlessly blurs the lines between Hip-Hop, Pop, Folk, R&B and Rock, while maintaining

Now with the new moniker for his solo work, Factor and the Chandeliers, he builds upon his already vast repertoire and creates his first sample-free fully instrumental EP. Working with session musicians, including long time collaborators bassist Enver Hampton and Canadian Pop Sensation Gregory Pepper - as well as natural field recordings - he experiments with a wide array of genres within just eight cohesive tracks. By taking this new step, creating more organically and collaborating with a variety of talented musicians, Factor hopes to progress his sound and his abilities as a producer. It's a far cry from a traditional Hip Hop record, or an instrumental Hip Hop record for that matter. Exploring facets of 80's era R&B, Upbeat dance and Shoegaze, it elicits a range of emotions, all enveloped with a solid head-nodding groove. Although Factor's distinct dusty breaks are still the driving force, the wide variety of original source material enables Factor to play the line between late night dance party and chill-out session.

BENEATH OBLIVION from man to dust “I want to stand with pride... waiting for the end to arrive” he proclaims, as a tremendous struggle is about to unfold within us all and before us all. Inwardly, outwardly. Consumed by devastation and the somber reality of a world of ash and a brain full of worms. Ruins. Ruined. From Man To Dust is an 80 minute journey through the deepest chasms of grief in a postapocalyptic wasteland of nuclear fallout. The war inside is responsible for the war outside. Beneath Oblivion trudges onward through the 8 tracks that make up the album in an utterly ferocious manner. Crushing all preconceived notions of “devastation” as they bludgeon ahead amidst all the contempt and misery we’ve all caused one another. “Flush it away, I care no more... perhaps I never did” vocalist/guitarist Scott Simpson realizes on the albums second track. With the shriek of a man on fire, he condemns society and questions how we process thoughts as human beings. In a world where nobody else cared, would you? The album is as introspective as it is globally inquisitive. Detailing the direct correlation between our inner thoughts and the direct actions of man in a fractal universe. “Love is madness, and madness is inspiration”. The fragile human psyche presents the hardest struggle of man, few can hold the stretching fabrics of sanity together for more than mere presentation to others. “Easy to forget, and totally permanent”. With its focus on stark imagery and the contrasting beauty of destruction, the album arcs through each movement with terrifying strength. “I’m still alive, that’s all I know”. The lyrical composition further deals in the metaphorical sense of wordplay - detailing accounts of an apocalypse that is never completely revealed to be internal or planetary... or both. “To journey miles... over the smoldering dead... who turn to soil which yields no growth”. The guitar work of Allen Lee Scott and Simpson is like shovels digging graves for all of us and they dig with the conviction and confidence of a band thats rediscovered themselves. They are fighting for it on From Man To Dust, as the rhythm section of Keith Messerle (bass) and Nate Bidwell (drums) churn through each track with the tightness of a duo that’s performed together for years, though it’s Messerle’s first album with the band. It also marks the bands first recorded output as a four piece, creating a dense environment capable of seizing the air from your puny lungs. “Death is a being, she has inevitable tow”.

The album was recorded during a sweltering heat wave in a massive, formerly abandoned warehouse in Cincinnati, OH by Andy Perkins, with samples, mixing and additional tracking done at his own Perkins Ranch in Erlanger, KY. The natural reverb from the multitude of room microphones in the gargantuan space further conveys the ambitious grandeur of the record. After the mixing of the album was completed, the whole thing was sent off to the legendary engineer/producer Billy Anderson to master (Neurosis, High On Fire, Melvins), the resulting sound confidently captures the devastating nature of the material itself. In describing the sound in terms of something relatable for people that haven’t heard the album, I suppose you could say Beneath Oblivion combine the hypnotic, churning crunch of Sleep and Electric Wizard, with the raw, broken down contempt of Grief and Buzzoven and the monolithic heaviness of Zoroaster and YOB, but also has moments containing the more eclectic elements of Agalloch-esque folk-metal and Skepticism-esque funeral doom keys. Simpson’s vocals range from head splitting shrieks, more akin to black metal than doom, to guttural growls, and even into clean singing. Mix it all together with a considerably European flavored atmosphere and a twist of southern rock swagger and you’re getting an idea of what the band sounds like. Artwork design for the album was handled by the bands own Allen Lee Scott with layout duties taken care of by N.Shumaker/Northerlightsindustries.com. The album will be released worldwide via The Mylene Sheath. “Inner and outer conflicts have grown, mental, global, crumbling and too far gone.” - Recently featured in Decibel Magazine with press photos and interview - Recent tour dates with Weedeater, Jucifer, Wolves In The Throne Room, Cough, and a set at the Hopsctoch Festival! - Marketing campaign included full page ads in Decibel Magazine and online ads on MetalSucks, Metal Maniacs, Stereo Killer, and more! - Limited edition vinyl, only 500 pressed and only 300 on this color!

“Some bands like to play it safe. They find something that works for them, get comfortable with it, and then continue to fine tune that method with each subsequent project, often to critical acclaim and a delighted fan base. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this method and it often yields classic albums and songs. But then there’s an entirely different breed of band. The type of band that couldn’t care less about critical approval. The type of band that writes music to challenge themselves and get it out of their collective souls because they have to. And the high risk, high reward brand of music this type of band creates can often become the catalyst for other people picking up instruments and learning how to play them. There’s a reckless abandon, an unwavering confidence, a “press-record-andsee-what-we-do” swagger that is inspirational and moving. On Leaves/Scars, the third album by the instrumental rock band Beware of Safety, we can hear them becoming one of the latter bands: taking high risks and bearing astonishingly high rewards. After touring on dogs in 2009, the band decided to begin writing the next record and for the first time in the band’s six year history, the album was to be written completely from scratch. In addition to going into the new album with no previously conceived material, the band would also be writing as a five piece for the first time. (Tad had joined the band on bass after dogs’ release in January, 2009.) So in what could be considered an “album of firsts” for the band, they also (for the first time) had an opportunity to write an entire record from start to finish with each member’s input on each song. The diversity on display within the tracks on Leaves/Scars exemplifies the influence that this new writing process ultimately had on the final compositions. The range of sonic scope on display is mesmerizing. From the aggressive stomping and shrieking of the opening track, “Meridian”, to the building and climaxing crescendo of “Kevin Spacey”, to the slowly churning and growing “Lowercase West”; to the smooth jazz turned math metal cruncher that is “Crooked Nails for Catching Skin”; and on into the beautiful, triumphant, shimmering number “Moorpark Ends”; to the introspective and bittersweet “Small Victories”; and finally the utterly epic 11-minute closer “Memorial Day” which somehow encapsulates the entire gamut of the album’s emotional spectrum and gives it one final, massive shot in the arm. The immediate moments spent in the aftermath of Leaves/Scars are deafeningly quiet; a true indicator of the intimate listening experience of which you’ve just been a part. Some of this can be attributed to how the music was brought to life, as the band also approached the recording, mixing, and mastering of the album from a new perspective this time around. As Leaves/Scars crashes out of the gate, the immediacy of the new approach and the recording itself are instantly noticeable. Light on punch-ins and rejecting any over-finessing, the album has a strong, gritty, “in-your-face” sound that helps to separate itself even further from anything else in the band’s discography. Recorded by Jeff Lewis at The Compound Studio (Marc Ford, Dusty Rhodes & the River Band), mixed by Patrick Murphy, and mastered at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, CA by Evren Goknar (30 Seconds To Mars, Megadeth, Iggy Pop), it also marks the first time the band worked with three different people in three different locations to produce a record. Leaving their comfort zones in every aspect to make this album - from the initial writing methods, to the recording, mixing, and mastering process - Beware of Safety set out to challenge themselves and discover who they are as a band. This is an honest record, full of feeling, passion, and soul... From the heart.”
