CIRCLE MILJARD
Like with any group of tireless, fearless, infinitely creative artists, to discuss one album by Circle is to discuss a snapshot. In the course of over 20 years, and over 30 albums, the Finnish band has explored more genres than most people can name. They have been savage metalheads, trippy prog disciples, deftly accurate Krautrockers and purveyors of otherworldy folk. In other words, to hear one record is to hear a moment static in time that may possibly never be revisited again. The moment here is Miljard, a 2006 instrumental album where the band chose to push themselves further than usual by assuming the form of ascetics working in the sparse realms of ambient music. There is no form here, at least none that can be picked up casually. The opening melancholy keyboard line of “Parmalee” illustrates the heart of the record: simple webs of melody used to stitch together brooding, fractured, disparate sounds that meander, skitter, rumble and squeal through all ten tracks. Each one has been recorded to impart a sense of mood and theme. The slow builds and recessions; the moments of mania that disappear like delusions; the depth of field between the instrumentation; they create a fully realized atmosphere whether a song is only few minutes or runs to over twenty.
ALBUM INFO - Artist: Circle - Title: Miljard - Catalog: HYH-179-1 - Label: Hydra Head Records - Format: Vinyl 3xLP - Release Date: January 8th, 2016 - SRLP: $29.99 - UPC: 634457698918
No single photo can define someone, and each Circle record only grazes their sweeping, stunning career. But as a standalone piece, Miljard fascinates, challenges and confounds every time you revisit it. SALES POINTS - First Ever Vinyl Pressing - Remastered Audio - Limited Edition of 1000

BOTCH 061502 “This is your last chance.”
That statement near the tail end of the final Botch show says it all. Starting out as wannabe hardcore kids from Tacoma, Washington, over the course of eight years they morphed into one of the most iconic and influential bands of their generation.
After breaking up, the members wound up in so many renowned projects (Russian Circles, Minus the Bear, These Arms are Snakes, Narrows) that some may argue Botch's mathrock/ noisecore was just a stepping stone, part of their evolution. But no one in attendance can deny feeling a void open when the stage lights went up at Seattle's Showbox on June 15th, 2002. Focusing primarily on material from their two critically admired full-lengths, the quartet played to a sold out audience, fans flying in from around the world to hear the goodbye. And in just a little over an hour, Botch showed everyone what they'd been building up to. The band had no interest in going out with some pristine, polished relic. This isn't a studio-quality recording with applause thrown in. It's a barely contained maelstrom, the band wrecking their instruments and assailing the audience. It captures, as best as it can, what it felt like to be there: the deranged, macerating guitar work of Dave Knudson skittering over Brian Cook's obscene bass tone; Tim Latona's algebraic rhythms hammering behind the screams of Dave Verellen; the crowd, as one body, mournfully singing “It's so quiet here” before the mayhem begins again. It seems as if every band is doing a reunion nowadays, and many are clamoring for Botch to finally join the crowd. But whether or not that happens, this one night was successfully captured, where four friends walked on stage together and played as though it would never happen again. TRACK LIST

MAMA
Grindcore. Black metal. Harsh noise. Many fans of these genres tend to gravitate towards them because they push the boundaries of sound, testing our limits of how sonically extreme it is possible to go. And ENDON is fighting to lead the offensive. Self-described “Catastrophic Noise Metal, the Japanese quintet have harnessed the most severe aspects of the aforementioned genres to create something that is both wildly ambitious and viciously disturbing. Combining blast beats, tremolo riffing, destructive feedback and fascinating structures, the six songs contained on MAMA have all clearly come from the same warped id, yet are fulfilling and corrupted in singular ways.
Produced by Atsuo from experimental veterans Boris, MAMA is an album that looks for no easy exits. In roughly 40 minutes it swerves from cinematic atmospherics to the din of electronic havoc to near indecipherable bursts of chaos, all while vocalist Taichi Nagura howls, shrieks, growls and wails as if he's both the torturer and the victim.
ALBUM INFO - Artist: ENDON - Title: MAMA - Catalog: HYH-243-1 - Label: Hydra Head Records - Format: Vinyl LP - Release Date: January 8th, 2016 - SRLP: $21.99 - UPC: 634457698512
But despite how challenging and anti-musical the band can be, there are occasional passages of beauty that showcase their careful, nuanced approach to songwriting, even if it is adorned with such great disgust and violence. ODETTA HARTMAN 222 Odetta Hartman is a young woman keeping the spirit of Old New York alive. With a heart-stopping voice and wide-ranging instrumental talent, she carries cowboy soul into a new era where country can clash with computers, and bluegrass isn’t afraid of bass. With her first strictly solo record, 222 -- an experimental, bedroom-produced hybrid of folk, musique concrète and psychedelia -- Odetta Hartman and her partner, sound artist and producer Jack Inslee, have created something completely original and unsettling: badass banjos, detuned violins, superstitious stories and eerie soundscapes all give backing to beautiful vocal stylings that range from sensual to spooky. 222 presents itself as a post-modern audio novella: its 22-minute running time makes it as concise as your favorite Netflix episode, and its eclectic edge is sure to leave your head spinning by the time you’re through. In addition to writing all of the songs, Odetta sings, plays banjo, violin and guitar and incorporates samples from her own field recordings to create a truly idiosyncratic world of sound. A companion remix EP will be released in collaboration with Full Service Party, featuring unique reinterpretations of each track from some of the finest talents in the electronic music world. The 25-year old East Village native grew up around experimental filmmakers, street poets and afterhours debauchery, all thanks to her pioneering parents (founders of the local institution Two Boots Pizza) who have cultivated her passion for musical performance since the tender age of 4 years old. She currently teaches neighborhood girls age 8-18 how to produce radio and music at the Lower Eastside Girls Club.

“Odetta Hartman. The name itself sounds like a spitfire character from an old Western, and her debut album 222 extends that myth, blowing it up until it explodes in a flurry of twisted banjo, warped violin, and eerie field recordings.” — Stereogum Odetta Hartman Makes Futuristic Folk On “Creektime” — The Wild Magazine • Song of the week — The Bluegrass Situation • “Dreamcatchers” stream — Death and Taxes • Singles Mix — SPIN • Odetta Hartman Gives us Unconventional Folk — Wild Honey Pie

Silence / C1. A City / C2. Animals D1. Midnight Fever feat. Elli Medeiros / D2 Your Kind (Matias Aguayo Version) OVERVIEW: Colder has just completed his third, very long-awaited album, Many Colours, and it’s abundantly clear from the opening strains of the title track that the lengthy absence since 2002 debut, Again, and 2005 successor, Heat, hasn’t diminished Marc Nguyen Tan’s keen sense of mood and melody. In fact, as the remainder of Many Colour’s 10 mesmerising tracks attest, if anything the nineyear respite has given Tan a renewed sense of purpose and direction that reveals itself with a subtle beauty that resonates and endures. This is a mature work made by an artist of rare purity and insight, a man who makes music for the right reasons, or not at all. Previously known for his trademark intense, sensual, almost apocalyptic compositions, Tan’s latest album won’t disappoint existing fans, though the layering runs deeper, the emotions more considered and the overall effect harder to evade, as if you would want to. When an artist disappears for such an extended period, expectation of their return is rightly weighed down by fear that they have lost their creative spark or that the motivation behind it is less than noble. With Many Colours, Colder has crafted the ideal antidote to such concerns, in the process producing one of the most compelling and original records in years, an album that continues the cycle begun in 2002 whilst taking the conversation in other, less familiar directions. Signing with Trevor Jackson’s seminal label Output (Four Tet, Circlesquare), Tan’s two albums cemented his reputation as a masterful producer capable of creating sonically satisfying dance music alongside introspective, thoughtful songs. British electronic pop pioneers Depeche Mode were impressed enough to commission Tan to remix their track Clean, which he duly transformed into a twitchy, distorted slice of agit-pop. Another of his heroes and influences, The Cure, picked Colder to support them on a European tour. After stopping Colder in 2007, Tan relocated to the Small mountain village of Xalo in Spain, to reconfigure his future as an artist and to reconsider his life as a human being. The ensuing créative burst of activity led to the writing of the 10 tracks on Many Colours, resulting in an album of singular grâce and power. Opening track Many Colours rejuvenates the best elements of recent decades of modern music, juxtaposing its dominant synthetic template with a deeply affecting organic quality underscored by Tan’s use of piano, an instrument that appears on many of the album’s songs. Echoing the more experimental edges of The Velvet Underground, David Bowie, Kraftwerk, Joy Division, Orchestral Manoeuvres In the Dark and dozens of other reference points, Tan has produced a timeless album that belies its genesis in the mountains of Spain. The album’s mood is urban and urbane, taking the listener into the heart of the metropolitan darkness haunting Tan’s dreams. His spoken-word lyrics reflect ongoing concerns about the current state of the world, with Tan combining the levity of his music with the gravity of his vocals, and yet he never loses sight of the purpose of each song. This is an album to be assimilated and appreciated, a record that demands to be understood, loved and shared. Many Colours is an impressive, accomplished work made by an artist at ease with himself, but not the world. If the album is the beginning of a new creative phase in the career of Marc Nguyen Tan, we have much to look forward to. "Danceable, yes, but without breaking a sweat.” BROOKLYN VEGAN "All dark hues, monochrome vision and moody lighting, a wonderfully intoxicating return" FACT "Exquisite - Colder sounds like a sparser, funkier Joy Division or a Digital Doors" NME “With Colder there’s no notion of compromise” TIME OUT NEW YORK "Suicide-ish vocal meanderings and Krautrock-via-Joy Division hypnosis” CMJ "While there's more than a little influence from early New Order here, one can also hear echoes of Suicide, PiL's Metal Box and the motorik reveries of Cluster.” MOJO “Colder's sound is at the height of chic, the perfect late-night complement to an evening of jealous lovers” PITCHFORK https://www.facebook.com/ColderMusic/
Bob Margolin my road Steady Rollin’ Records/VizzTone Label Group is proud to announce the release of multi-award winning guitar player/songwriter/singer Bob Margolin’s MY ROAD. MY ROAD brings a fresh focus for Margolin - both musically and lyrically: “’MY ROAD reveals who I am today, musically and very personally. Each song takes a surprising turn from the others and my previous music. This breakthrough for me is informed by fifty years on bandstands, my Blues music heritage and credentials, and the drive to survive and thrive in today’s pressurized world. MY ROAD is my ride through modern challenges, the ironies and lessons of aging, achieving true love, mourning, my band’s distinctive signature sound, a childhood epiphany, my seven years in Muddy Waters’ band, and exploring the darkest sides of life with friends who have been there.” The album was produced by Grammy-winning producer Michael Freeman and recorded at Fidelitorium Recordings in Kernersville, NC. Joining Margolin (guitar/vocals) in the studio are Chuck Cotton (drums/vocals) and Tad Walters (guitar/harp). The album features 6 new Margolin originals (plus 2 co-writes) and 4, written by friends, Margolin had long wanted to cover. PRIVATE ALBUM STREAM: https://soundcloud.com/francismacdonald/sets/francis-macdonald-music-for/s-wCeAx YouTube link to “20 Sep”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGOedecOeTI&feature=youtu.be OVERVIEW: Scottish BAFTA-nominated composer and songwriter FRANCIS MACDONALD drums with Teenage Fanclub and has worked with a range of artists (Alex Chilton, Dan Penn, The Pastels, Kevin Ayers, Kate Rusby, Edwyn Collins, Ian McCulloch, BMX Bandits, Belle & Sebastian, Cairn String Quartet and Max Richter, etc.) Made with the help of a grant from Creative Scotland, “Music For String Quartet, Piano & Celeste” is an album of minimalist contemporary music informed by Francis’s work in TV and film soundtracks and influenced by key musical figures such as Philip Glass, Ennio Morricone and Arvo Pärt. Macdonald also cites the inspiration of fellow Glasgow-based composer Malcolm Lindsay who, like Francis, did not formally study classical music. The album was recorded at Mogwai’s Castle Of Doom studio, Glasgow (because Francis liked their piano) and features a quartet drawn from the esteemed Scottish Ensemble, formed in Glasgow in 1969. It was recorded and mixed by Iain Hutchison (Julie Fowlis, Transatlantic Sessions) and mastered in Milan by Stefano Barzan (Ludovico Einaudi). Francis played piano and a celeste hired from RSNO. The album cover photo was taken at Hardanger Fjord, Norway during a Teenage Fanclub tour.
“This album was a bit of a challenge to myself”, says Francis; “As a listener I came quite late to classical music and I have no formal training, but I didn’t want to use an arranger or orchestrator. I wanted to be responsible for every note.” OTHER ACTIVITY: www.francismacdonald.com

After last year’s well recieved album 'The Phoenix', King Britt returns under his Fhloston Paradigm moniker for the first in a series of 'Cosmosis' EPs. 'Cosmosis Vol 1' is three spacey perfumed hardware workouts of the kind that Fhloston Paradigm built his name on. The EP starts with 'Sonic Six', matching bumping drum machine rhythms with gurgling bleeps, and mournful strings building the emotion through the noise. The second track is the slowly evolving ambience of ‘Faith’, which builds up into radiant, shimmering clouds of sound before a bass line drops midway, grounding the track melodically and switching the emotion from ecstatic to bittersweet. The EP closes with ‘Past’, where broken sounds are dragged over a warping piano line, and a flickering static melody engulfs the track as the noise dies out. ‘Cosmosis Vol 2’ will follow early in 2016 …

HIPBONE SLIM & THE KNEETREMBLERS is a band that plays proper rock’n’roll! They take all the influences of original rock’n’roll, rhythm’n’blues, whatever you want to call it, and give it their own unique stamp and energy, with a garage band attitude and enthusiasm. They have somehow captured the true essence of rock’n’roll in a way that very few have been able to do in a very long time. The band is led by the ubiquitous Sir Bald Diddley (aka Hipbone Slim), on guitar and lead vocals, a man who has been described as ‘Britain’s string king’ in reference to his wild and fiery guitar style, influenced by Bo Diddley, Link Wray, Chuck Berry, Dick Dale and the like. Harsh critics may single out their unwillingness to deviate from the primitive rhythm’n’blues blueprint as their downfall, but this would be a failure to understand the objective of the group. To put it simply, as already stated, Hipbone Slim & the Kneetrem blers play rock’n’roll music. Bald Head, Hairy Guitar, Ugly Mobile, Orangutan, One Armed Bandit, Sally Mae, Voodoo Love, Hieroglyphic, Hey Ramona!, Indestructable Love, Why Can’t I Find What I’m Looking For?, Don’t Know Where To Start, Meanwhile, Back in the Jungle, Number One Son, There’s Only One Louie.

And the jury was out where the Quireboys were concerned. If the band’s second coming was built to last then Homewreckers & Heartbreakers had it all to do.This would be make or break for one of Britain’s best-loved rock and roll treasures: a defining moment in a career where potential had never quite evolved into proven talent. ‘The Birthday of the World’ is the follow up to last years ‘Cutting Up The Present Leaks Out The Future’, described by Q Magazine as “a thrilling long dark night of the soul”. From lo-fi bedroom pop cassettes, to post-punk shards and poetry, short films, girl-boy rock 'n' roll, and drug fuelled dark folk tinged psychedelia they have constantly evolved with each release. The atmospherics, lyrical heart, and energy are carried through to this new album: a science fiction themed art-pop odyssey titled ‘The Birthday of the World’. Inspired by the stories of Isaac Asimov, Ursula K Le Guin, and Arthur C Clarke, the new album is an exploration of Earth’s last days and the colonisation of Mars and is without doubt their finest collection of songs to date.
