Stitch of the World, Merritt’s sixth studio album, was written on a friend’s farm in Marfa, Texas, at Merritt’s California cabin and in New York City in the wake of several major changes in her life. Merritt workshopped the songs on Stitch of the World with longtime friend Sam Beam of Iron & Wine after bumping into him in an airport. The album was recorded in Los Angeles while Merritt was six months pregnant, after which she relocated to her hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina. The time since the release of 2012’s Traveling Alone has also found Merritt recording and touring with Andrew Bird in his Hands of Glory, MC Taylor’s Hiss Golden Messenger and classical pianist Simone Dinnerstein.

TY SEGALL
NO EXPORT TO EUROPE, NO CDs TO JAPAN OR AUSTRALIA
SELF-TITLED
Life is a Rorschach, life is a Rashomon. Fuck your facts. Throw ‘em out with yesterday’s webpages. Lives lie beyond the equations of currency, border lines and government — and truth is just a drop in the beholder’s eye. Ty Segall has made whole records that wrestle with realities — fighting against some, pulling mightily to bring others into being. Of late, he’s thrown up his hands and donned clown shoes, dancing merrily in the dual role of oppressed/oppressor! His hands aren’t any more or less dirty than anyone else’s — but amidst the thunder and the chaos of the ongoing storm, he’s looking for the eye within. The new self-titled record — the next record after Emotional Mugger, Manipulator, Sleeper, Twins, Goodbye Bread, Melted, Lemons, and the first self-titled album that started it up in the nowdistant year of 2008 — is a clean flow, a wash of transparency falling into a world that needs to see a few things through clearly, to their logical end. It’s got some of the most lobe-blasting neckwork since the Ty Segall Band’s Slaughterhouse (from way back in the long, hot summer of 2012), but it also features a steep flight of fluent acoustic settings, as Ty’s new songs range around in their search for freedom without exorcism, flying the dark colors high up the pole in an act of simple self-reclamation. All he wants is some truth! CD

TRACK LISTING
The construction and destruction of his chosen realities has, until now, been a luxury Ty has rightfully reserved for himself, striping overdubs together to form the sound — but for this new album, he entered a studio backed by a full band — Emmett Kelly, Mikal Cronin, Charles Moothart and Ben Boye — to get a read on this so-called clarity. This leads to a new departure in group sound, as well as some of the most visceral and penetrating vocal passages yet heard from Ty Segall.
BREAK A GUITAR FREEDOM, WARM HANDS (FREEDOM RETURNED), Hands” puts the “sweet” back into suite; “Orange TALKIN’, THE ONLY ONE, “Freedom/Warm Color Queen” is a supreme moment of tenderness; “Talkin’,” a roots-infused truth-attack. “Papers,” looks behind the doors of THANK YOU MR. K, Ty’s process; “Break A Guitar” is a brutal fun-fest pitched to the back of the house. Ty Segall keeps you guessing, bracing your ORANGE COLOR QUEEN, skin with a welcome astringency, seeking to stem the bleeding chunks and splashes of guitar, tight beats, audio-verité toilet PAPERS, TAKE CARE with smashes, a Wurlitzer electric piano in a jam, blazing harmonies, and LOTS of songs to sing. There’s no concept beyond that; (TO COMB YOUR HAIR) finding the right places to be is a momentary thing. Ty Segall is the sum of his songs — and about getting the free. The free to be!

INDIE EXCLUSIVE SCRATCH AND SNIFF SLEEVE YELLOW LP (+
Lemon Memory is the new album from UK noisemakers Menace Beach. Following up from 2015’s rapturously received debut album ‘Ratworld’, the Leeds-based brainchild of Liza Violet and Ryan Needham are back with their most psychedelic and haunting effort to date. ‘Lemon Memory’ is in part an effort to lift a citrus based curse – trust us, it’s a real thing - Ryan and Liza believe was placed on their house, using the hex breaking power of music. With bad things happening at home, from a giant rodent infestation, to gangs breaking in to attack their landlord, Menace Beach left Leeds behind clutching a copy of ‘Mysterious Cults’ a book they’d picked up while on tour and hotfooted it to Ibiza with start writing the follow up to ‘Ratworld’. With writing complete, they headed straight back to Sheffield in the studio with Ross Orton (MIA, Arctic Monkeys, The Fall). Kicking off the album with perhaps the most straightforwardly pop moment on the record, ‘Give Blood’, ‘Lemon Memory’ gradually reveals itself is a more stretched out affair, exploring Motorik nooks and psych crannies whilst never letting go of Menace Beach’s way with a wayward melody. Culminating in the epic drone of Hex Breaker II, ‘Lemon Memory’ may or may not be the key to breaking a lemon related curse; what it definitely is the sound of a band forging their own identity, edging closer to some sort of grimy truth.

Cuddle Magic is Benjamin Lazar Davis, Christopher McDonald, Dave Flaherty, Alec Spiegelman, Cole Kamen-Green and Kristin Slipp – a six piece avant-pop band located between Brooklyn and Philadelphia. All six musicians are in-demand collaborators in New York’s musical community and work with a wide array of artists, from pop superstars like Beyoncé to critically lauded independent musicians like Will Sheff (Okkervil River) and Amanda Palmer (Dresden Dolls), as well as with respected figures of the avant-garde like Fred Frith and Ran Blake. “...a favorite new album of mine by a band that certainly has the most adorable name: Cuddle Magic...a spare bit of electronic pop inspired by music from Ghana. It leans somewhere between Sylvan Esso and the Postal Service.” - Bob Boilen, NPR “Philly-Brooklyn ensemble Cuddle Magic does meticulously orchestrated chamber pop that’s part twee and part proggy. A few years back, the band resembled a folkier Dirty Projectors, but its yearning new single “Trojan Horse” demonstrates a new affinity for squashed synthesizers.” - Time Out New York

inai Vessel was originally conceived as a one-man project for singer/ guitarist Caleb Cordes before ultimately becoming the fully realized, collaborative group that would create the highly anticipated debut full-length Brokenlegged. hile the trio’s excellent 2014 EP Profanity drew on the outsized drama of mewithoutYou, the canny, observational nuances of Pedro the Lion and the literary smarts of Bright Eyes’ early-00s golden era, Brokenlegged allows its eight songs to stretch out and plumb wide fields of human emotion with complex, challenging results. The record is, by definition, “lived-in”: the songs here find people trying to co-exist with and reconcile the doubts, anxieties and ironies that have always been a theme in the band’s work. Soul Jazz Records Presents
STUDIO ONE ROCKSTEADY 2 The Soul Of Young Jamaica – Rocksteady, Soul and Early Reggae at Studio One 27th January 2017 No shipments outside of North America
Soul Jazz Records’ new journey into the mighty vaults of Clement Dodd’s Studio One steps once more into the fertile musical environment of Jamaican music in the late 1960s and early 1970s, from the sweet harmony vocals of seminal 1960s Rocksteady right up to the nascent birth of Reggae and Roots music at the start of the 1970s.
TRA C KLIS T
Sleevenotes to this album are by Steve Barrow, author of ‘Rough Guide to Reggae’ as well as Soul Jazz Records’ own ‘Reggae Soundsystem Cover Art’ books.
2. The Termites – Rub Up Push Up
While Ska at the start of the 1960s had taken American Rhythm and Blues as its main influence, Rocksteady focused on the emergence of American Soul music – with Jamaican vocal harmony groups such as The Gaylads, John Holt & The Paragons, Carlton & The Shoes showing a particular fascination with the close harmonies of Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions and other US Soul acts. Here The Heptones even feature with a cover of Bob Dylan’s ‘I Shall Be Released’. The influence of Soul music on Jamaican Rocksteady and Reggae is almost palpable, so much so that one wonders how much more successful singers like Delroy Wilson, Alton Ellis, Slim Smith and John Holt would have been had they been born in Chicago, Detroit or Memphis.
1. Hortense Ellis – Sitting In The Park
3. Carlton & The Shoes – Never Let Go 4. Alton Ellis – I’m Still In Love With You 5. Owen Gray – Give Me A Little Sign 6. The Bassies – Big Mistake 7. Alton & Hortense Ellis – Breaking Up Is Hard To Do 8. Slim Smith – Born To Love
Artists such as Alton Ellis, Delroy Wilson and Owen Gray defined the era – a slowed down beat as Jamaican political and social heat slowly increased when the 1960s progressed into the start of the 1970s – and the music evolved further from Rocksteady into Roots Reggae.
9. Cannon & The Soul Vendors – Bad Treatment
This album is released on heavyweight gatefold sleeve double vinyl (plus download code), CD with slipcase and digital album (ex-North America).

MATTHEW DEAR DJ-KICKS The long established and critically acclaimed DJ-Kicks series kicks off 2017 with suitably accomplished DJ, producer, vocalist and instrumentalist Matthew Dear at the helm. A man of many musical hats, Texas born, Detroit raised Dear has a wide reaching discography that takes in face melting techno as Jabberjaw, dark avant-pop under his own name and intricate minimal as Audion. Often with a gothic slant and full of curiousness, his pensive but playful music is an intoxicating distillation of many different influences, often with his own stylised vocals at the centre. As co-founder of both Ghostly International and Spectral Sound Dear has also been responsible for some of the underground scene’s most exciting new music, plenty of which appears here. Now more than 15 years, five albums and 20 EPs into his esteemed and always evolving career, Dear is

exactly the sort of fascinating character that makes the very personal DJ-Kicks series so special. Included along the way are three brand new and exclusive cuts from Dear himself, one under his own name and two as Audion. They are typically weird and intriguing cuts that tie the whole unhinged and freaky mix together. Also helping to add to the left-of-centre afterparty vibe are inclusions by artists as diverse as Thatmanmonkz and Matrixxmann, ItaloJohnson and Pearson Sound, Randomer and Simian Mobile Disco. Wholly timeless yet totally of its time, this is the first new work from Dear in a while. Once again, though, it proves that he is a master of subversion; someone who can head down a brain frying techno warren then effortlessly onto raw machine grooves via left of centre synth ditties and kaleidoscopic house music. In his considered hands, they all make perfect sense.

PRESENTS
About In May 1976 a record was released that would have an unforeseen and lasting impact on the music industry “Ten Percent” by Double Exposure was an early release on the New York independent label Salsoul Records. America was in the grip of a disco explosion with new clubs opening on a weekly basis; Salsoul saw what was happening and swiftly created a sound for their label, heavily influenced by the music then coming out of Philadelphia, aimed directly at New York’s dance-floors. Records like “Salsoul Hustle,” “Tangerine” and “You’re Just The Right Size” by The Salsoul Orchestra borrowed heavily from the beautifully orchestrated Philadelphia International Records but added a more percussive, bass heavy depth that New York’s DJs loved. So what was so special about this particular single then? Double Exposure was, after all, just another band, “Ten Percent” just another song; one of many “disco” records released that week. First of all Salsoul became the first record label to make a twelve inch single available to Joe Public - the exotic format was previously only available to DJs as promotional items or bought under the counter at certain record stores. Not only that though, the extended version was created by Walter Gibbons, a DJ at New York’s Galaxy 21 who’d built his reputation making exclusive versions of tracks to play in his sets. In 1976 it was unheard of for a DJ to set foot in a recording studio, being seen as little more than living jukeboxes by the serious music industry. Recording studios were strictly the domain of recording artists and producers so Walter found himself in a unique position, gaining access to a world no DJ had been granted before. Or so we thought... The Men In The Glass Booth tells the full story. Featuring ground breaking re-edits and remixes by some of the Disco era's most influential DJs including Walter Gibbons, Bobby DJ Guttadaro, Tom Savarese, Jellybean Benitez, Tee Scott and John Luongo, this opulent release also includes a 40 page book which features exclusive photos and insights from some of the story's key figures. Key Selling Points: - Full Press, radio & online campaign (to include google ads face ads & boosts) - Package contains previously unissued versions of classic tracks by pioneering DJs of the disco era) - Vinyl edition contains 40 page coffee table book telling the story of the DJ as remixer and featuring previously unseen vintage photographs TRACKLISTING 5LP Part A A1 Leon Collins - I Just Wanna Say I Love You (John Luongo Remix) A2 Marboo - What About Love (Tony Gioe Remix) B1 Double Exposure - Ten Per Cent (Walter Gibbons Sunshine Sound Acetate Edit) B2 Juggy Murray Jones - Inside America (Rick Gianatos Disco Queen Acetate Edit) C1 Hot Ice - Dancing Free (John Luongo Remix) C2 The Sunshine Band - Black Water Gold (Sunshine Sound Acetate Edit) D1 The Salsoul Orchestra - Magic Bird Of Fire (Francois Kevorkian Sunshine Sound Acetate Edit) D2 The Salsoul Orchestra - It's Good For The Soul (Jay Negron Sunshine Sound Acetate Edit) E1 Double Exposure - My Love Is Free (Walter Gibbons Disco Madness Remix) E2 Fay Hauser - Reaching Out For Happiness (Jonathan Fearing Remix) F1 Love Symphony Orchestra - Let Me Be Your Fantasy (Tom Savarese Remix)

Quarta 330 aka Toru Koda from Tokyo has a long relationship with Hyperdub, dating back to 2007 when he remixed Kode9 in his own then-unique 8-bit dubstep style. In 2017, with ‘Pixelated EP’, his music has evolved and accelerated; this set of detailed, energetic chiptunes makes you take notice. It has all the hallmarks of what makes Quarta’s music unique and exciting with a fierce sense of fun. The EP kicks off with ‘Resonate 3’, perhaps the melodic highlight of the set, with an open-hearted, jazz fusion-like tune that Yellow Magic Orchestra would be envious of, and shivering chords set to a sparse, rattling beat. ‘The Fairies Homecoming’ reaches back to his dubstep roots with its reggae offbeat, but this time the reggae feel is matched with hyper-speed drums, reminiscent of early jungle. On the flip, ‘Yatagarasu’ bends whooshing, emotional chords and a bright snaking melody against stiff kick drums and deep bass, while ‘Digital Lotus Flower’ is pounding and energetic with complex low-end bass and drums reminiscent of a heavy rain shower, tearing out to a stuttering bleeps and chords. The ‘Pixelated EP’ is just a taste of the new batch of Quarta 330 goodness on the way.

On Old Light: Songs from my Childhood & Other Gone Worlds, old-time fiddler Rayna Gellert first established herself as a songwriter and vocalist. Workin’s Too Hard, her latest collection of original and traditional songs, carries that promise forward, along a tradition now of her own devising, and demonstrates how deep immersion in our musical past can point the way toward the future of American music. She developed the album in collaboration with co-producer Kieran Kane, multiinstrumentalist Kai Welch (Abigail Washburn, Bobby Bare Jr.), and drummer Jamie Dick (Rhiannon Giddens, Joan Shelley). Recorded old school live in one room by Grammywinning engineer Charles Yingling (Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard), the sound of Workin’s Too Hard is as warm, intimate, and deep as the songs themselves.
Produced by Kieran Kane and Rayna Gellert
Having grown up steeped in American folk music, Gellert’s unique voice - both as a writer and singer - embraces a synthesis of the old and the new. I love Rayna’s musical personality, which is deep, funky, and complex. –Béla Fleck

Royal Wood Ghost Light
One of the most accomplished singer songwriters in Canada, Royal Wood takes on the world with the release of his new album GHOST LIGHT on Outside Music, available January 27, 2017. The journey to GHOST LIGHT started years ago on a small farm in rural Ontario, Canada. While his family tended cattle, Royal, at the age of 4 was more interested in any instrument he could get his hands on than bales of hay. His parents recognized his prodigious talent and enrolled him in music studies. “As a shy kid, growing up on farmland in the middle of nowhere allowed me to escape to the open spaces to learn music and dream without the noise of the city life”. When it came time, Royal left the family homestead to attend university in Montreal where between studies, he fine-tuned his skills by becoming the house piano player at some of the classic Montreal jazz clubs and performing Dylan inspired folk songs in coffee houses. Realizing the Montreal jazz bars and coffee houses weren’t opening many doors for him, Royal headed west to Toronto to realize his dream as a singer songwriter. To pay the bills as a beginning musician, Royal found himself in the towers of Bay Street. In typical Royal fashion, he went from a trader’s assistant to a Senior FX Trader in a very short time. With his days spent immersed in the FX market to pay his rent, Royal continued to write and record his music at night and perform everywhere and anywhere – releasing his debut album Tall Tales and touring all over Canada. “At no time in my life did I ever want to be an FX trader, but looking back it was the best thing that could have ever happened. It gave me business acumen, money to pay for my first albums, tours and publicist, and basically fund my dream until it became a reality”. The critical acclaim that greeted Tall Tales encouraged Royal to record the follow-up A Good Enough Day and more importantly, it lead him to finally quit the day job and focus on his destiny. The accolades began to pour in, multiple Juno Award nominations, being named iTunes Songwriter of the Year, as well as opportunities to tour with Sarah Harmer, My Morning Jacket, and Hawksley Workman. Royal Wood, had gone from a farm boy musical prodigy to the chaotic lifestyle of a FX trader, to one of Canada’s most acclaimed performers, producers and songwriters. All in a very short time. In 2013, Royal, split from his wife, headed overseas, unplugged and tucked himself away in a rustic cottage outside the Village of Slane, Ireland. With that isolation, Royal wrote the album that was to become The Burning Bright. An album which spawned the radio hit “Forever & Ever” and broke Royal’s career wide open in Canada. After nearly 2 years of touring behind The Burning Bright, Royal relocated to LA to record GHOST LIGHT with co-producer Bill Lefler. Instead of hiring session players to perform on the songs, Royal took it upon himself to play almost every instrument. “The creation of GHOST LIGHT was an example of serendipity at its best. My intention of being in LA was to visit with my brother who lives there, and to experience the joy of creation again with my old pal Bill in sunny California. At first we thought we’d just record a couple songs and then talk about what we might do one day down the road. But instead, we felt so inspired by the first 3 songs we recorded, so electrified by the occasion that was happening, that I bounced around from instrument to instrument like a kid in a candy store. The album literally laid itself out at our feet in a matter of a couple weeks. Even the first single ‘Long Way Out’ only happened because on a day off in LA, I sat around with some friends writing for the sake of writing. As a result we ended up creating the 2 obvious singles for the album in one single afternoon”. The rural kid who spent the past 15 years away from home, first in the bars of Montreal, then to the breakneck pace of corporate finance, and finally to the unpredictable world of a career musician has now returned home. Last year, Royal purchased the family farm. Most recently, he turned the farm organic by giving the land to young farmers trying to change the world. Royal Wood has accomplished many of his personal and professional goals in his native Canada, and it’s now time for the rest of the world to be introduced to this immensely talented and captivating performer. “Today, I find myself finally comfortable in my own skin. Finally making the music I always knew I was born to create. Finally acting independently of the good opinion of other people. I am simply following my bliss and seeing where it leads me.” LORI MILLER AT REDEYE DISTRIBUTION PROJECT MANAGER LORI@REDEYEUSA.COM

GENRE : ELECTRONIC / TECHNO FILE UNDER: “E” Emptyset RELEASE DATE : January 27, 2017 NO EXPORT (JAPAN, S. AMERICA EXPORT OK) TRACK LISTING: Emptyset is the innovative electronic duo of James Ginzburg and Paul Purgas. The duo composes within a complex set of self-imposed parameters or rule sets and the results of their expeditions on Borders are at once minimal and visceral. Focusing on shifting timbral changes over melody, Emptyset’s work is an exploration of the relationship between rhythm, texture and space. The pair shares a history in Bristol’s underground music scene as well as an impressive list of production credits. Ginzburg, now Berlin based, runs a network of record labels including electronic music label Subtext and Arc Light Editions, whose reissues include a work by Arthur Russell. He’s a prolific producer and remixer for both independent and major labels, with diverse projects such as Faint Wild Light, Ginz and more recently Bleed Turquoise. Purgas, now based in London, founded the We Elude Control label in 2009, a curated collection of rare experimental music. Purgas is an artist, writer and curator who has presented projects with Tate, Whitechapel and Serpentine Galleries, and he is also an active promoter of electronic music in eclectic spaces from a carpark to a Modernist pavilion.

SALES POINTS “[Emptyset’s music is] something genuinely alien, and that alone is reason enough to listen.” - Resident Advisor “Intriguing – even bracing.” - The Guardian “Emptyset are one of the most innovative acts currently working in the techno domain.” - FACT Borders is Emptyset’s Thrill Jockey debut following limited and sold out releases for Raster-Norton, Subtext, Future Days, and Caravan Recordings
Each project’s framework and parameters dictate how the sound or performance evolves. In the past, Emptyset have explored the ways in which the sonic and spatial interact within different architectural contexts: often site-specific locations such as the decommissioned Trawsfynydd nuclear power station in North Wales, or the neo-gothic Woodchester Mansion. Borders takes a different approach, centering around the performative and the performer. Having each created their own tactile instruments, a six-stringed zither-like instrument and a drum, Emptyset focuses on how organic sounds interact with the analogue processes that have defined their work to date.
Empytset have performed at many high profile festivals including Unsound, MUTEK, CTM, Sonic Acts, Berghain, Luminato, Adelaide, and Bozar. There is already interest from MUTEK, Moogfest, Walker Art Center, and Getty Center for 2017 performances
Contrasting typical approaches to making electronic music, Emptyset set out to emphasize live performance rather than creating sequences within devices. While Purgas and Ginzburg utilize vintage analogue electronics, compressing and distorting the signals, the album itself is performed entirely live, where subtle movements make for substantial changes in sound.
LP pressed on virgin vinyl with artworked inner sleeve and free download coupon. A limited supply will be pressed on clear vinyl. CD version in 4 panel mini-LP style gatefold package.
From the very first track, “Body,” one can hear how the physicality of the instruments have imbued the sound’s texture. The physical characteristics of the metal strings create a layer of dynamic juxtaposition to the grinding timbres emerging around them. The broody “Ascent,” features the album’s clearest call-and-response between the stringed instrument and the drum, barking and thudding back and forth at one another. Evident in tracks such as “Border” and “Speak,” Emptyset uses basic rhythmic structures drawn from an array of broad cultural practices, expressed neutrally and without overemphasis on the source. Taken as a whole Borders distills the duo’s inspirations to their essence and the resulting music is as raw as it is captivating.
Ginzburg is a prolific producer and remixer with his projects Faint Wild Light, Ginz (collaborations with dubstep/grime musician Joker), and Bleed Turquoise
Empytset have a history of work for film trailers and are being pitched for new music synchs around this release Turkish conceptual artist Cevdet Erek is working on a remix. Erek will represent Turkey at the 2017 Venice Biennale Emptyset have been commissioned for Architecture Foundation’s installation at Ambika P3 space near Baker Street in London, Tate Britain’s Performing Architecture programme, a collaboration with conceptual artist Cevdet Erek for Spike Island, an installation at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and a study of composition through ionospheric propagation developed with Deutschland Radio

GENRE : FOLK FILE UNDER: “J” Jones, Glenn RELEASE DATE : January 27, 2017 NO EXPORT (JAPAN, S. AMERICA EXPORT OK) TRACK LISTING:
Glenn Jones’ debut album This Is The Wind That Blows It Out was originally released in 2004 on CD-only by Strange Attractors Audio House. We are proud to give this timeless classic a first time vinyl issue. Glenn Jones is a master of American Primitive Guitar, a style invented in the late 1950s by John Fahey, whose traditional fingerpicking techniques and wide-ranging influences were used to create modern original compositions. Jones, who led the post-rock ensemble Cul de Sac, brings his own made-up tunings, the use of custom-crafted partial capos, and a highly skilled picking style on both banjo and guitar, to create personal compositions that are lyrical, emotive and elegant. What sets him apart from the myriad guitarists playing today is his ability to tell stories with the guitar and banjo, and to convey a range of emotions. This process starts with the compositions themselves and carries through to his selection of recording environment and engineer. This Is The Wind That Blows It Out stands the test of time in today’s avant folk movement with Glenn Jones emerging as a clear leader. His pensive sentimentality and playful spirit, not to mention his innovative technique, have become just as ingrained into the style’s DNA as any hallmarks of the original Takoma school. Opening with the title tune, “This Is The Wind That Blows It Out” meanders with heady grace, “Delta-delica” slide guitar as intoxicating as it is mournful. “Fahey’s Car” bounces and shimmers like some of Peter Lang’s classic Takoma sides, and Linden Avenue Stomp is an alternate take of a old-timey duet with the late great Jack Rose. Jones turned away from standard tuning years ago, inventing tunings as a way of escaping the known, his 2016 album Fleeting gained much critial acclaim and his convivial live performances prove him to be a compelling storyteller as well as an outstanding muscian.

GENRE : ROCK FILE UNDER: “P” Pontiak RELEASE DATE : January 27, 2017 NO EXPORT (JAPAN, S. AMERICA EXPORT OK) TRACK LISTING: 1. 2. 3. 4. Pontiak is made up of three brothers from the Blue Ridge farm country of Virginia, Van (guitar, lead vocals), Lain (drums, vocals) and Jennings Carney (bass, organ, vocals). Their music is swaggering guitar rock that straddles the line between a power trio and something far more expansive in sound and scope. Their broad song structures allow ample room for three-part vocals, drums, organ and stellar slide and lead guitar to stretch and captivate. Songs roll along with an effortless synchronicity despite their extremely varied textures. Julian Cope described them as, “straddling a wide sonic rift valley, with references that stretch from the southern latitudes of Spain’s Viaje A800 to the northern majesty of Black Sabbath and Harvey Milk via The Doors.” Sun On Sun, their second full-length album, was recorded in a log cabin just north of Charlottesville, Virginia in about four days. The thick wooden walls of the structure reflected a lot of sound that gave the recording a sharp biting quality. Each string pluck from Van’s guitar can be heard soaring above the rich ethereal reverb that coats tracks like “White Mice” and “The Brush Burned Fast”. The wilderness surrounding the cabin and the appreciation for it that the brothers share can be heard seeping into every track. From start to finish, Sun on Sun evokes the nature that surrounds the brothers from the rolling meadows, to the dense woods, from the early morning solitude of the rural farmer, to the open and endless night sky. The psychedelic organ flourishes of “Tell Me About” and the bass heavy churn of “Shell Skull” keep the album grounded in the rock tradition, never wandering too far from the epic and at times heavy trail that the brothers are blazing. Sticking with this tradition, the Carneys honed the songs that make up Sun On Sun while touring and didn’t waste much time tinkering in the studio. Most of the tracks were recorded in only a few takes, if not the first and they strived to create an album that flowed like a live performance. “Swell”, which was written in the time it took to record it, bleeds into the pounding rhythms and guitar swirl of “White Hands”. The title track was a song that had been written long before and road tested but underwent a sudden metamorphosis in the studio, a happy accident if you will, that the brothers have continued to build on since that moment.

AU CHAMP DES MORTS – Dans La Joie The striking first full-length from AU CHAMP DES MORTS is a richly emotive, multi-headed manifestation of finest contemporary Black Metal song-craft. Texturally and musically diverse, this sterling album melds the prime orchestration of predecessors ANOREXIA NERVOSA with an abundant core of atmospheric influences including black-gaze, post-rock, cold wave and post-black metal. Impassioned vocals from guitarist Stephan Bayle and bassist Cecile G are haunted by the ghosts of internal and external wars, bringing howls of dismay, chants of uprising and clean-sung litanies of personal fragility amidst corroding heritage.

Strident themes alluding to the peopled triumphalism of folk song are wrung for maximum poignancy in the face of accelerating extinction, impossible crises and imminent collapse. Beautifully produced and mixed at Drudenhaus Studio (ANOREXIA NERVOSA, ALCEST), iridescent soundscapes and shimmering effects-laden guitars transition seamlessly into masterly blast command and powerfully affecting chord-work. A deeply personal, vital record, “Dans la Joie” is an interweaving of dualities: transience and temporality, fury and fragility, aging and aesthetics, depression and delirium, dreams and dust.

THROANE – Derrière Nous, La Lumière "Derrière-Nous, La Lumière" is a giant wave of despair, a colossal edifice of discordant guitars and heartbreaking howling built on mid-paced and oppressive tempo, reminiscent of GODFLESH, NEUROSIS or BLUT AUS NORD. The poisonous heaviness of this insane work of Art, truly mind-melting, is dangerously addictive, intelligently repetitive and hypnotic. The infected music of THROANE is a despereate landscape, a massive nihilistic echo crawling into the mystic depths of the human soul, at the crossroads between Industrial Black Metal, Post-Core and Dark Ambient. With this first outstanding album, a pure injection of desolation, THROANE has positioned himself to join the elite in the obscure meanders of real underground, where creative and audacious bands are the hidden monarch of exceptional Dark Arts. MARGE Bruise Easy Label: Salinas Records Format: Vinyl LP Catalog Number: SAL-078 / TI-03 Release Date: January 27th, 2017 Contact Information: wideawakeprpdx@gmail.com
MARGE is a four-piece indie/punk band from the burgeoning DIY music scene of Philadelphia, PA. The catchy Bruise Easy is their debut full-length release for punk mainstay, Salinas Records. The thirteen tracks on Bruise Easy represent what the DIY music scene of Philadelphia is all about; excitement, heart, and honesty. MARGE came together as a band in 2013 for DIY Philadelphia’s, First Time’s the Charm Fest, a two-day festival showcasing new bands in Philadelphia’s DIY scene with a spotlight on female-identified, trans* and queer folks and people of color. After a few EP releases, a split with Philadelphia band GUNK, and some exciting live shows with bands like RADIATIOR HOSPITAL, SWEARIN’, WAXAHATCHEE, and LVL UP around the east coast, the band caught the attention of Salinas Records. Salinas Records offered to put out the bands first full-length record, and the band began work on what would become, Bruise Easy. Recorded in West Philadelphia at Sex Dungeon studios, by Dan Angel and James Ryskalchick over the course of one week, the songs on Bruise Easy bring the listener back to the sounds of bands like BELLY, THE BREEDERS, THROWING MUSES, and at times, THE RAINCOATS. Even though these bands are great reference points for someone that has never heard MARGE, the band gives a youthful punk spirit to the music that tended to lack in their predecessors. Bruise Easy brings to life the sentiments of 80’s and 90’s indie rock, while updating it for a new generation of frustrated youth. Bruise Easy flows effortlessly, and fills the air with an atmosphere and melody that most bands spend their entire careers trying to achieve. MARGE may not be the most technically proficient band of this genre, but they have something that most band don’t have, heart. The raw production and emotional openness of Bruise Easy showcases the passion and heart that MARGE has become known for in the underground music scene. The lead track, “Give It Time” and it’s follow up “Graveyard,” invite the listener into MARGE’s world of vulnerability and warmth, while keeping an intimacy not found in the records of their peers. Bruise Easy is a record that has the ability to ignite a burning passion in the listener, and repeatedly captivate. MARGE have not only created a debut record that brings an older generation of indie rock fans back to a music genre they may have left in the past, but also opens up a whole new musical world for a younger generation of fans that are searching for a vulnerability and honesty in music they’ve been missing. Bruise Easy will be available on January 27TH on LP from Salinas Records, and Marge will be hitting the road in support of the LP in the following months. Tom Paxton may have trimmed his touring schedule, but he is far from done writing songs and performing. On “BOAT IN THE WATER” he features exquisite new songs co-written with Jon Vezner (“Kathy Mattea’s hit “Where’ve You Been”), Pat Alger (multiple Garth Brooks hits) and Don Henry. He has his own new songs and a few from the past that are calling back to him. Paxton and teamed up with friends and GRAMMY Award winners Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer as producers and band. Marcy’s versatility as harmony singer and instrumentalist on the resonator guitar, mandolin, guitar, ukulele and percussion have built her resume as a top notch studio and live musician. Cathy Fink adds banjo, guitar and harmony vocals. Ralph Gordon, versatile double bassist, keeps the rhythm section solid. The many trio performances and long time friendship of this trio is apparent in the music. *Folk icon Tom Paxton’s 63nd recording includes 13 songs, a mix of brand new songs and a few not heard in a very long time. *Touring solo, with Cathy & Marcy and with the Don Juans *GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award Winner

“They set a blueprint for subsequent indie rock, the kind that valued DIY yet didn’t shy away from melody, and addressed matters of the heart with arch distance.” Pitchfork “Half Japanese are no dictatorship – more an underground political movement, united in their love for Jad Fair’s weird dismantling vision” The Wire Wildly eccentric and humorous, the energetic ‘Hear The Lions Roar’ is an art rock record where Jad’s expertly thrown out lyrics remain optimistic and fresh alongside a fierce and compelling rhythm section. Featuring a cohort of past musicians from the 90’s, their dexterous instrumentation brings further depth to Jad’s songs.

Double 12” vinyl (green / white). Stanley Brinks (aka André Herman Düne) is joined once again by the Norwegian folk collective The Kaniks, this time stripped back to a two piece of fiddle and banjo. Eschewing a traditional recording studio, Brinks took The Kaniks to a remote island outside the small town of Egersund in south west Norway. Over the course of week of midnight sun on their isolated rocky island, living and recording in the only building on the island, the Vibberodden lighthouse, they recorded this double album of modern day folk tales of love, loss and mischief. Brinks is renowned for his unique antifolk style: both playful and suggestive, insightful and entertaining. His mastery of storytelling, presented in both English and in French on these albums, introduces you to the free spirited world of Brinks’ life as a touring musician. His fondness for calypso and the unusual provide the perfect foil to The Kaniks’, whose folk instrumentation and country and bluegrass influences take this double album to a joyous place Brinks hasn’t been before in his extensive back catalogue. Final album to mark the 20th anniversary of London-based cult Anglo-French “ghost rock” group whose ouevre includes collaborations with John Grant, Low, Dead Can Dance and Vashti Bunyan. Features guest appearance from Peter Milton Walsh of The Apartments. th
The aptly-named, ‘Closure,’ is the 12 and final official album by cult London-based AngloFrench self-proclaimed "ghost rock" group, marking their 20th year of existence. ‘Closure,’ includes a guest vocal appearance from Peter Milton Walsh, singer of acclaimed Australian chamber pop band, The Apartments. Audrey Riley, go-to cellist for the likes of Nick Cave, The Smiths, The Cure, The Go-Betweens, Muse, Coldplay (to name but a few) provides luscious string arrangments on many of the tracks here. Forming as a lo-fi electronica trio in 1996, Piano Magic’s first EP, ‘Wrong French’ was a favourite of John Peel’s (they later recorded a Peel Session for him). By 2000, they’d become a full, touring alternative rock group, recording 2 albums for 4AD Records : the soundtrack to Spanish director Bigas Luna’s ‘Son De Mar’ film and ‘Writers Without Homes,’ most notable for featuring the first recording in 30 years of long-lost folk doyenne, Vashti Bunyan. The album also saw the band’s second collaboration with John Grant, back then far from the critically acclaimed torch singer of today. Further collborations throughout the years included Low, Dead Can Dance, Cornershop, and Tarwater. Often described as darkwave or coldwave, Piano Magic prefer the label, “ghost rock,” an emotive combination of post-rock and haunting ethereal electronics – a blend that has proved particularly popular on the Continent - the band have toured as far and wide as France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia, Turkey, Poland, Ukraine, Portugal and Greece in recent years. “Smooth, finely crafted and very songwriterly affair (with echoes of Talk Talk, The Auteurs and Roy Harper)” – The Wire (Dec ’16) “These masters of dark wave have certainly left an indelible mark” 4 stars – Songwriting Magazine (Dec ’16) Other reviews confirmed : Mojo, Uncut (with interview), Record Collector, Prog, Shindig! and more Tracks: Closure/Landline/Exile/Let Me Introduce You/Living For Other People/You Never Stop Loving (The One That You Loved)/Attention To Life/I Left You Twice, Not Once Also available : Life Has Not Finished With Me Yet (SL017)

Having reunited three years ago after being asked to play All Tomorrow’s Parties by their fans in Deerhunter, Blue Orchids are back with their first full-band album since - believe it or not - their 1982 Rough Trade “The Greatest Hit (Money Mountain)”. Blue Orchids began in 1980 after three former members of The Fall reunited, including founding guitarist Martin Bramah and their first keyboard player, Una Baines. A deal with Rough Trade shortly followed, resulting in two 7” singles, a spot on NME’s C81 cassette compilation of post-punk luminaries and 12” EP, “Agents Of Change.” Despite later line-ups featuring members of Primal Scream, The Smiths, James and other big names, no follow-up albums were issued in their day. Martin was asked to become lead singer of Inspiral Carpets, passed on that, rejoined The Fall for their biggest-selling album, “Extricate,” and retired from music for a few years. American trip planned for spring of 2017. Good Day To Live / Jam Today / Feather From The Sun / Motorway / Rosy Hours / August Rebels / Whisky Burn / Iron Tree / Running Blind / Road To Perilous / cd bonus: Groundhog Life

“The Flood” and “Disney Boys” came out as a double a-side and quickly made the indie charts. “Work” and “The House That Faded Out” bettered the debut, and in fact “Work” easily remains the band’s most often compiled song, appearing on two dozen officially released various artists collections. Following their debut album Blue Orchids acted as Nico’s back-up band and recorded a number of songs perhaps originally intended for her. Four of them were released on the “Agents Of Change” 12”. Those tracks are compiled here on vinyl for the first time with two previously unreleased tracks. “The Unknown” comes from around the same time as the “Agents Of Change” EP, and “Sleepy Town” is an early version of a song which was later a 12” 45 side. Despite promises, Rough Trade US, in a period of chaos and confusion, somehow failed to release any of this material in America. So for the first time ever, Blue Orchids offer an actual domestic release, with cover art by acclaimed artist Leka Mladenovic, whose work with Vic Godard of Subway Sect has been the subject of several gallery exhibitions. During a lull in Blue Orchids activity in 2006, Martin decided to record a solo album for his own amusement, which he then made around two dozen copies of, making it among the rarest of all The Fall / Blue Orchids-oriented releases, and surprisingly, one of the best! With the exception of an overdub or two, Martin sings and plays all the instruments on the album. Nearly every song’s a winner, from the opening put-down of Fall main man Mark E Smith, “The Fall Of Great Britain” to the closing “Necessity.” Not quite rock, not quite folk, the album’s simplicity and directness took on odd forms . Both the vinyl and compact disc versions are limited editions.
