The Heavy are a British indie rock band from Bath, England formed in 2007. The band is comprised of Kelvin Swaby (vocals), Dan Taylor (guitar), Spencer Page (bass guitar) and Chril Ellul (drums). At SXSW 2008, The Heavy was named artist of the day by Spin Magazine as well as mentioned in Rolling Stone’s Hot List. “You must go change your life.” Those words by Rainier Marie Rilke followed Laura Gibson as she boarded a train in the summer of 2014, the Empire Builder line that took her from Portland toward New York City. Ahead was an MFA program in creative writing and uncertainty; behind was a boyfriend, a close-knit family and music community, a city that fanned her songwriting and her life.

Back in Portland she had already started writing a new batch of songs, recording demos with engineer John Askew (The Dodos, Neko Case). She planned to finish in New York, but her entrance to the city was bumpy. Securing a fifth floor apartment in the East Village, Gibson continued work on the new songs and began her program at Hunter College, even as her long distance relationship started to suffer. Shortly after she arrived, she broke her foot, effectively barring her in the apartment while it healed. The songs she had begun to write and record in Portland began to feel more important, a way of understanding her situation. A new record was taking shape. On breaks from school, Gibson returned to Portland to continue recording in Askew’s studio, and with violinist/composer Peter Broderick on the Oregon Coast. Her rhythms were emerging in the studio, and in New York she was getting settled. A fire changed all that. On March 26, 2015, Gibson’s East Village apartment building was consumed by a gas explosion and burned to the ground. Two people lost their lives, more were injured, and most were displaced. Gibson escaped unharmed, but in the wreckage was every piece of the life that she brought with her: the notebooks filled with lyrics, her instruments, including the guitar she had played on every album, every ID card and piece of paper that detailed who she was. She bounced around. She slept on couches. Friends and fans and fellow musicians near and far supported her with guest beds, financial assistance, and encouragement. In the midst of trauma and recovery, the very act of writing and re-writing her lost lyrics connected her to who she was, and where she was going. As the songwriting came together, the music and recordings did too, as Gibson gathered a band of her closest friends and most admired peers: Dave Depper (Death Cab for Cutie, Menomena) took up guitar and bass, building ambient loops. Drummer Daniel Hunt (Neko Case) layered percussion, and Broderick added string sections and sang with a sensitivity to match Gibson’s own silver voice. Contributors like Nate Query of The Decemberists and the singer/songwriter Alela Diane rounded out the studio time. Sharing the role of producer, Gibson and Askew pushed forward. What emerged is Gibson’s most personal record to date.

Matthew Barber & Jill Barber The Family Album Siblings Matthew Barber and Jill Barber have spent the past 12 years focusing on their solo careers, and while they have made guest appearances on each other’s albums and have toured together, until now the two had never made a collaborative album. This past spring, the inevitable finally happened – Matthew and Jill began work on The Family Album. Matthew’s “The Sweeter The Dawn” floats dreamily and burns slowly while the ballad “Grandpa Joe” is a tribute to the siblings’ Scottish maternal grandfather they never knew. Jill’s “Today” is a classic affirmation of love in the face of fear, and “Big Picture Window” is her country take on settling down and making a home. The rest of the album is comprised of six covers; chosen from a long list of songs that were pitched, discussed, attempted and roughly recorded during a few sessions in Vancouver (Jill’s home), Toronto (Matthew’s home) and California (during a family vacation). The songs selected are of personal significance, relevant to the album’s themes of loyalty, time, memories and, of course, family, or simply for how much fun they were to sing. “We are indebted to the songwriters and previous interpreters of these great songs. We hope we did them justice. We ultimately went with the cover songs that just felt most right for the overall feel of the album. They ended up all being from the 60’s and 70’s. Included in “Albums We’re Most Excited for in 2016” (Pitchfork) I AKA I is the ﬁrst album that Iranian-born, London-based electronic musician Ash Koosha has released on Ninja Tune and it is, by some distance, his best work yet. Koosha, lauded for his “mind-bending electronic music” (Pitchfork) and “intimate, elegantly fractured, beat-driven music” (The Guardian) has been supported by various publications including FACT via their LPs of the year for “Guud”. Koosha has also had to cope with a brief imprisonment for his music and seeking asylum in the UK, where he lives as an exile, unable to return home. He prefers, though, to concentrate on his art and, with I AKA I Koosha’s experimental drive solidiﬁes into remarkable achievement, sitting somewhere between Amon Tobin and Flying Lotus and sharing qualities with the likes of Arca and Haxan Cloak but sounding like no one but himself. The results are nothing less than stunning. Sami Baha is a young producer from Istanbul, with his roots in the Turkish Hiphop scene, who has been stealthily pricking up ears with guest spots on Rinse FM and NTS since he moved to London last year. He started this EP ‘Mavericks’ while he was in Istanbul, saying "the music I produced became more chaotic as Istanbul became a harsher place both politically and economically. I didn't really design it that way, but I feel like the sound got more aggressive over the years". He describes his music as ‘instrumental trap‘, but instead of trap vocals there are complex arrangements, although he has started to work with vocalists while he’s been in the UK.

He says of his sound; "I grew up when the Arabic style of Turkish music known as Arabesk was at the centre stage of Turkish culture, so I was listening to popular Turkish performers Ibrahim Tatlises and Muslum Gurses alongside trap originators DJ Screw and the Atlanta scene. I know people don't hear the orient instruments and rhythms in my music, but I like to think of my music as arabesk-trap, as I feel like the Arabesk and trap crossover is where they come from and in their feel." ‘Mavericks’ EP is a deconstructed and beautifully crafted take on the trap sound, using a dramatic sense of space and melody that gives the EP an epic feel plus an attention to sonic detail that makes tracks move like they’re alive, avoiding all clichés. ‘Mavericks 1’ opens with a lush repetitive string melody, dropping into tense atmosphere; ‘Still’ uses the space between notes, unusual configurations of tuning and tone draw the track apart and let every note shimmer in dark space. The steel pan melody and spiralling snares of ‘Dough’, manage to remind of vintage Black Dog, rolling out emotively over bass and drums. ‘Tozko Paran’ is trap re-imagined as a delicate cyborg waltz and ‘Cataphract’ featuring Kuedo, runs a twisting, turning melody over unsettling chords, dubby drums and a bumpy ride bass that pumps like a fearful heart. April 1st will see Peter Broderick’s classic score Music For Confluence reissued on vinyl for the first time. Through relentless touring and multiple album recordings, Portlandbased Peter Broderick has established himself as a contemporary composer, known for his innate gift as a musical medium to picking up any instrument, turning his musings into poignant songs. The scope of Peter’s work is vast – his recordings and original score work currently feature in dance arrangements, art installations, films and documentaries. He collaborated with many like-minded contemporaries such as Nils Frahm and Greg Haines, and featured on Clint Mansell’s Last Night soundtrack. Peter’s signature emotional depth cuts through any instrument to create stirring, personal music that is full of artistic detail. Currently an artist in residence at Sirius Arts Centre in Cobh, Ireland, 2016 has much in store for Peter. Created in 2011 for Jennifer Anderson and Vernon Lott’s spell binding documentary film on five unsolved murders in Idaho, the soundtrack takes the listener through waves of stark emotions. IN HIS OWN WORDS: “It was November 2010 when I started to seriously think about relocating to Berlin. I knew my Danish visa would run out sometime in 2011 and if I wanted to stay in Europe I'd need to either renew it or get another visa elsewhere. Berlin pulled me in like a magnet, with so many of my friends and inspirations living and working there, and also being so central for my frequent European travels. And just when I started to think about finding a place, I heard about a friend of a friend who was renting out a spacious two-floor apartment in the middle of town. I was told the building was owned by a man who only wanted musicians to live there, so I could make all the noise I wanted, and on top of that I was given a key to the piano store on the bottom floor so I could play anytime the store was closed… the place was made for me! All winter, when I wasn't traveling and playing concerts, I was locked away in this new space creating. I had been asked to make the score for a documentary film called Confluence. The film is based in the Lewiston, Idaho area, not too far from where I grew up in the USA, and it chronicles several mysterious cases of young girls found murdered or gone missing around 1980, all of which seem to lead back to one man who for a variety of reasons has not been able to be charged with these crimes. So with my minimal equipment and a key to Die Klavier Etage (the piano store), I set out to create some textural soundscapes which could compliment the building tension of the story without being too intrusive or suggestive. Days and nights, snowed in and experimenting with layers and layers of whichever instruments I had around, finding a murky atmosphere that fit with the uneasy feeling which the film gave to me. On New Year's Eve I was inside, recording the final notes for the score. I had finished everything except the piece for the credits. After speaking with one of the directors of the film, Vernon Lott, we decided the song for the credits should be different from the rest of the score. ALBUM DESCRIPTION On the evening of May 6th, 2007 Peter Broderick sat down at a piano and performed a collection of 10 solo piano compositions that would be released by a small Swedish label in 2008 as Docile. Since then, these simple, luminous tracks have defied the gravity of his extensive repertoire and found their way into the hearts of thousands. “Ceasefire” and “Begin” occupy two of the top 3 slots on Broderick’s Spotify page with a collected 2.5 million listens. Docile is a distillation of Peter’s pure musicality. The compositions, recall the poise of Erik Satie’s Gymnopedies, and the minimalism of Philip Glass. The best musical partners play as if there is a direct connection between their brains. Steve Gunn (guitar) and John Truscinski (drums) possess that certain ESP / telepathy / majick - whatever *you* elect to call it. We've all heard folks whose operate on these otherworldly levels - Sandy Bull and Billy Higgins, Brian Eno and Robert Fripp, Alan Vega and Martin Rev, John Coltrane and Rashied Ali - and know just how special it can be when folks ascend to those sorts of rarefied heights. Over the course of a few short years these men recorded two albums, Sand City (2010) and Ocean Parkway (2012), that captured their unique and private musical language. Originally released as two separate smallish and now long out of print editions, those two albums are now presented within a singular gatefold package. Whether you are a recent convert to Gunn's lyric and expressive guitar styling or an old-timer who has never investigated this particular corner of his discography, there is a lot to be rewarded by within the confines of both Sand City and Ocean Parkway. The first of the duo's two albums, Sand City, saw release following a late winter conversation between Gunn and Three Lobed Recordings on a bench in Tompkins Square park. Old friends who had spent a lot of time playing together both in public (including within the later incarnations of raga dronesters GHQ) and private, Truscinski and Gunn were looking to lay down some of their well-honed compositions in a studio setting. Sand City is informally split into "electric" and "acoustic" sides, both reflecting the duo's well fluid and expressive style. Ocean Parkway followed quickly thereafter and features a collection of electrifying material honed while the duo was on a 2011 European tour. Gunn’s playing across all of this material, while always truly exploratory and aimed for the stars, takes on the more expansive reach typically reserved for his live performances when anchored by Truscinski’s textured and expressive backbeat. These two albums, while recorded at different times, share such a familiar tone that they seem and feel as if they are two sides of the same coin. Paired together Sand City and Ocean Parkway meld into a seamless listening experience.

Felder is an infinite, boundless creation that unravels upon every listen. Werner has created sounds that are listenable and inviting, complex but approachable and, mostly, completely unidentifiable. “Felder” means “fields” in German, and here the word refers to conceptual frameworks and subjects, and sound fields. Werner is a cultivator — a farmer — of the various sounds, from metal scratched on a big glass window to piano phrases found on a private Popul Vuh compilation. He mixes organic sounds from French horns and cellos seamlessly with synthesized notes created with one-of-a-kind programs. Werner builds layers of sound with differing cadences upon one another, creating intricate patterns that connect with each other structurally, rhythmically, semantically, and historically. Suggestions of jazz, industrial music, drone and even folk float in and out of the electronic compositions in a seemingly effortless manner; paradoxically, Felder was meticulously constructed over the course of four years. Werner’s refinement process for the pieces on Felder was simultaneous with the lofty goal of challenging himself as a musician while still creating a record that is melodic and complex. Werner recorded the album in Marfa, Texas; Berlin, and around the world while touring with Mouse on Mars. Just as the album’s creation and production cannot be tied to a specific setting or time, the sounds heard on the album have no clear boundaries. They are unexpectedly malleable and mutable. Context and perceptions play with sounds to yield a fresh new experience with each listen. Samples and instrumentals bounce off one another, starting from central points and radiating outwards. With so many new sounds to discover and new inspirations to be found, Felder is an entire new field of musical possibilities — a landscape that at first appears simple and beautiful that reveals its utter complexity upon closer inspection. What if we became adventurers in our own backyards? That’s what award-winning children’s singer-songwriter Frances England started wondering, not so long ago. In an era where so many of us float through the world with our noses in our phones as the colors of our neighborhoods slide past in a blur, England imagined a joyful antidote. It starts by simply looking around, and noticing all the little wonders that abound. Things like the music of raindrops pattering on pavement, or the shadow-patterns that fences paint upon the ground. This is the curiosity that lights up Explorer of the World, England’s fifth album for families. Written for the kid in all of us, but with a special nod to those aged 4 -12, these ten fresh and playful tracks pay homage to the everyday treasures all around us: from handwritten notes fluttering on the sidewalk (“All the Things I Found”) to sunlight lacing itself through leaves (“See What We Can See”). This theme of exploration informs every aspect of the album, starting with the genesis of the songs themselves. “I decided to shake up my songwriting process,” England says. “I’ve always started with chord progressions and melodies and I really wanted to open that up. So instead of starting with the chords of a guitar or piano, I started making melodies over the sounds of my city.” For two years England took walks around San Francisco and, with a handheld microphone, recorded an array of sounds she’d never really paid much attention to before. The bucket drum that kickstarts “Street Life” was played by a street performer on Market Street, then looped throughout the track. The ambient urban sounds of “City Don’t Sleep” were recorded on late night walks through North Beach. These noises - along with the beats of a couple of salvaged drum machines - would form the vivacious foundations of the album. To pull it all together, England asked two of her friends to co-produce the album: GRAMMY award-winner Dean Jones (Dog on Fleas) and composer Dave Winer (Justin Robert’s Not Ready For Naptime band). Winer’s catchy beats and funky horn arrangements paired perfectly with Jones’ earthy, analog sensibilities. In gathering these sounds and songs together, Explorer of the World is nothing short of magic, a shimmering sonic journey through the undiscovered everyday - and a reminder of all the unexpected adventures that can happen, when you keep your head up and let our own curiosity lead the way.

ABOUT “THE WORLD UNSEEN”: For Mamiffer’s Faith Coloccia and Aaron Turner, music is a divine language, a code to be deciphered, a map riddled with clues. Their latest album, The World Unseen, is a conceptual and liminal document of numinous connection through an experience with loss. It is an exploration of subconscious and psychic bonds between the past and present, and the ways in which the musical devices of repetition and incantation create hands across the chasm that divide the human from the divine. Through the use of piano, voice, guitar, Wurlitzer organ, bass synthesizer, tape machines, and effects pedals, Coloccia and Turner have created an eight-song aural lexicon that vacillates between Arvo Pärt’s delicate minimalist beauty, Thomas Köner’s narcotic pulses of noise, and Richard Pinhas’ sublime textural patterns. Further expanding upon their explorations, Mamiffer enlisted Eyvind Kang for string arrangements. Geneviève Beaulieu (Menace Ruine) and Joe Preston (Thrones) make guest appearances on “Domestication of the Ewe pt. III”, contributing additional choral vocals and bass, and adding greater dimension to their auditory crossings. Despite this impressive arsenal of musicians and instruments, Mamiffer ultimately depends as much on empty space as they do upon the various oscillating frequencies within their sound. “The record is imperfect,” says Coloccia. “It has within its heart an incompleteness, a stillness containing the presence of absence and loss.” It was a slow and patient journey to arrive at the final formation of The World Unseen. Chance, accident and imperfections were used as compositional tools, and unplanned chaos revealed itself as having its own harmonious order and healing litany. The songs took their shape from source material that stretched back as far as 2011. Mamiffer then began to capture those songs in recording sessions at their home studio and at AVAST! Studio in Seattle with producer/engineer Randall Dunn throughout 2013 and 2015.
