Redeye welcomes Hausu mountain to tHe woRldwide distRibution fam! Hausu mountain is a record label founded in 2012.the label operates out of chicago, il and focuses on releasing oddball electronic music “we had high hopes for Hausu mountain when we placed the small Chicago outfit on our labels to watch list in January. Still, we couldn’t have predicted their incredible 2015. the label’s ragtag roster of artists held court over our bandcamp column this year, delivering experimental music that was as challenging as it was fun” - fact magazine - #2 label of 2015 Eartheater

“field recordings, hip-hop beats, classical arrangements, choral chants, kosmische and surreal poetry are all flattened out in a sort of everything-is-equal grandeur, yet in the midst of all its complexity, Drewchin sits at the center with zen focus, guiding us to the other side with warmth and grace.” - fact magazine #10 album of 2015 “RIP Chrysalis is the sound of someone figuring themselves out in real time, making all of their distinct voices harmonize, and creating new musical forms to share their discoveries.” - Pitchfork “it is the music of the ether, the thick liquid through which we move in time and space like woozy thrombocytes, occasionally crashing sidelong into our purposes.” Tiny Mix Tapes - #34 album of 2015 Videos

[Horse lords member andrew bernstein] “lets loose a series of shattered saxophone runs that shimmers like glitter, but cuts like broken glass.” - spin magazine
“The excellent Hausu Mountain label have a knack for putting out trippy music set in imagined landscape, but talsounds has several additional layers that reward the listener. one can follow chami’s skillful linear methods of on-the-spot layering, hear her intertwine cybernetically with her gear, or float along in her raft of tranquil modes.” The Quietus - best tapes of 2015

Log / split
Moth lP
both form a log and Moth Cock cherry pick performance strategies and sound sources from disparate traditions - electro-acoustic improv, hip-hop, techno, plunderphonics, free jazz, rock - and mash them into chimeric compositions that abandon all logic, opting to communicate in some looney primordial dialect beyond our understanding (and maybe even their own).
“Eartheater makes psychedelic music that’s at once familiar and mutated with a penchant for pop subversion and vocal alterations, found folk music in synths and harsh noise, and vice versa.” - nPR “Drewchin displays an all-consuming interest in blurring boundaries that burrows all the way down to the record’s textural details.” - Pitchfork

The
Growlers
“Nielsen’s voice, which resembles the Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner with a few inches of smoker’s-cough phlegm coating his worldview, is a good instrument for pickling icky sentiments until they become appealing again.” -- Pitchfork “ “Dull Boy,” channels a new wave Velvet Underground, in all the right ways.” -- Esquire “On “Big Toe,” the band picks up where their nine-song Gilded Pleasures EP left off in November, delivering another trademark nugget of salt-water psychedelia, entrancing listeners with a compelling groove as singer Brooks Nielsen croons atop with slacker swagger.” -- SPIN “After a few years of seemingly constant recording and touring, they’ve refined their sound into a poppy, retro-leaning style that they call “beach goth,” a combination of chiming, reverb-drenched guitars, snappy drums, and frontman Brooks Nielsen’s languid vocals, which suggest a guy who never takes his shades off, even indoors.” -- Entertainment Weekly “’Big Toe’ fuses their surf rock roots with a gritty rockabilly vibe. If it’s any indicator, Chinese Fountain is sure to be an album loaded with post-punk charm.” -- Under The Radar “The beach drifting sound of The Growlers only continues to get bigger, the chops are tighter, and production is cleaner.” -- IMPOSE

ON TOUR THIS FALL Need Your Light, the fourth full-length from Brooklyn’s Ra Ra Riot, sees the band – Wes Miles (vocals), Mathieu Santos (bass), Milo Bonacci (guitar), Rebecca Zeller (violin), and Kenny Bernard (drums) – getting back to their house party roots without abandoning the more heady soundscapes they explored with 2013's Beta Love. With a dedicated fan base, big supporters at radio and press, and an extensive touring history, the band will be supporting the release of Need Your Light throughout all of 2016.

AOIFE O’DONOVAN In The Magic Hour RELEASE DATE: AVAILABLE NOW
On Tour This Fall With Willie Watson Aoife (pronounced EEE-fah) O’Donovan will be performing a number of tour dates with Willie Watson, in support of her latest album, In the Magic Hour “O’Donovan has a fragile heart-melting voice and is a fine songwriter…In The Magic Hour is both exhilarating and exploratory” ★★★★ –Mojo Magazine “Sweetness and sadness find a tenuous balance in the voice of Aoife O’Donovan—and in the songs on her second album…evokes the reverberant chamber pop observations of Grizzly Bear…[and] the lush austerity of Alison Krauss.” –The New York Times “Gorgeous…The sparse-but- intricate arrangements speak to O’Donovan’s conservatory training, but are delicately shaded with her pristine voice and smears of electric guitar or wisps of fiddle.” –Rolling Stone Country “O’Donovan pushes her genre’s often confining envelope into brave, exciting territory.” –American Songwriter Tour Dates with Willie Watson: Thu 10/13 Fri 10/14 Sat 10/15 Sun 10/16 Tue 10/18 Wed 10/19 Thu 10/20 Fri 10/21 Sat 10/22 Sun 10/23 Tue 10/25 Wed 10/26 Thu 10/27 Fri 10/28 Sat 10/29 Sun 10/30

SHADOWY MEN ON A SHADOWY PLANET SAVVY SHOW STOPPERS / DIM THE LIGHTS, CHILL THE HAM / SPORT FISHIN’: THE LURE OF THE BAIT, THE LUCK OF THE HOOK
WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE (CD, LP): SEPTEMBER 16, 2016
Twenty-plus years after their last reverb trail dissipated, the remains of Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet have reconstituted. The Men were first reanimated in 2012 and have been semi-active since, revealing a stature and distinct influence that has only grown since their original incarnation. Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet existed originally between 1984 and 1995, and released three albums and twelve singles, appeared on numerous compilations (including the formative “It Came From Canada” series), toured extensively throughout North America and England, were one of the first Canadian bands to record a Peel Session for BBC D.J. John Peel, beat David Foster out of one of the two Juno’s they were nominated for, backed B-52’s vocalist Fred Schneider on his “Just Fred” album, and scored a couple of feature films and the television series Kids in the Hall. Recent years have seen them named as finalists in Toronto’s daily newspaper, as the Best Toronto Band Ever, and be indicted into the mysterious Independent Music Hall of Fame, for being “true Independent pioneers”. After years of being out-of-print—and for the very first time as digital downloads— Yep Roc Records is releasing the original three Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet albums—Savvy Show Stoppers, Dim The Lights, Chill The Ham, and Sport Fishin’—in deluxe gatefold sleeves, with expanded artwork, liner notes by Bon Von Wheelie, Bry Webb and Scott McCaughey, and contextual essays by band associates and a chihuahua. Translated from Latin and remastered from first generation tapes by Grammy Award winning engineer Peter J. Moore. Founding members Brian Connelly (guitar) and Don Pyle (drums) are joined by extended family member Dallas Good, of The Sadies, playing bass guitar for the foreseeable future, with select tour dates throughout 2016. Shadowy Men bass player Reid Diamond died in 2001 after a battle with cancer, so it is an honour to have long-time friend Dallas playing his parts.
“Shadowy Men are truly the instrumental kings of the Great White North” –Ira Robbins, Trouser Press Guide to 90s Rock “Canada’s best instrumental rock band of all time” –Grant Lawrence, CBC host and vocalist with The Smugglers “It's music that is as disarmingly fun to listen to as it is deliberate and artful, and for a kid learning to play an instrument and write songs, it laid out how a keen ear can put pop music culture and history in its place, without being a jerk about it.” –Bry Webb, solo artist and guitarist/vocalist with The Constantines “The material is top notch. The playing is superb.” –Scott McCaughey (The Minus 5, The Young Fresh Fellows, R.E.M.) Yep Roc Records is releasing all three of their studio albums on CD and vinyl. Each of these reissues contains bonus tracks (included on CDs and on digital download that comes with vinyl).
HIGHLIGHTS: • All three original studio albums are available on CD and LP with bonus tracks • The limited edition Record Store Day box set SOLD OUT • Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet will be playing select shows in the USA and Canada

MYKKI BLANCO MYKKI A singular artist who has made an indelible mark on the pop music landscape with a string of street-level releases and mixtapes, Mykki Blanco releases his debut album “Mykki“. Produced by Woodkid and Jeremiah Meece, the album finds Blanco simultaneously at his most fearless and his most accessible. “I realised as an artist I need to focus on myself and on my work. Arguments with people online distract from that. I used to have a problem with the media trying to define me, CD TRACKLISTING 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 10 11 12 13

either as a drag queen, or a transvestite, as a homosexual rapper, a transsexual or an HIV positive pop star, but most people need labels and my true fans know who I am and what I'm about". Mykki Blanco’s referential framework is both archival and futuristic; a myriad of culture references, spiritual anecdotes, designer labels, make-up brands, hippie jargon, Fendi here and Snapchat there, all perfectly reflecting the creative dialogue digital landscape we live in. Southern Culture On The Skids new studio album, The Electric Pinecones, will be released September 16th on the band’s own imprint, Kudzu Records. Featuring a dozen original tunes — 11 brand new songs and a whole-lotta NOLA remake of the SCOTS classic, “Swamp Fox”, the record will be available on CD and as a digital download. A limited edition green translucent vinyl LP will be available in November 2016. “The Pinecones was our folk-a-billy garage band alter ego,” singer-guitarist Rick Miller explains. “In the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, we would occasionally open up for ourselves as The Pinecones. What we played was not your typical SCOTS fare; more ‘60s west coast psych, folk and country. Those old set lists became the starting point for this record, The Electric Pinecones.”
STREET DATE: 9/16/2016
The first single off the album, “Grey Skies,” is a minor key mood piece with that folk-a-hill-a-billy psychedelic sound. Listen to how the acoustic 12-string riff slides into the band’s hypnotic rhythms that propel Mary Huff’s vocal into the mind’s eye of times past and love lost. Thirty plus years, two hundred plus songs and a million plus road miles in, Southern Culture On The Skids continues to blur the lines between genres and once again delivers a stellar album. Fingers Crossed
Vinyl
Item #: PRP137 UPC: 805520001373 Format: LP SRP: $19.99 PROPER RECORDS Export: North America Only
New studio album from Mott The Hoople frontman, co-produced by Andy York (John Cougar Mellencamp), featuring much anticipated David Bowie homage, ‘Dandy’ 180gm vinyl + full colour inner sleeve + mp3 download code Ian Hunter’s latest studio album, Fingers Crossed unveils ten new, self-penned songs including his much-anticipated homage to David Bowie, ‘Dandy’. Recorded at HOBO Studios in New Jersey, and co-produced by Hunter and Andy York, the record features his magnificent Rant Band and is the follow-up to 2012’s acclaimed ‘When I’m President.’ As leader of ‘70s British rock legends Mott the Hoople and as a hugely influential solo artist, Ian Hunter is widely revered as one of rock’n’roll’s most compelling performers and one of its most articulate songwriters. As author of such immortal anthems as, ‘All The Way From Memphis,’ ‘Once Bitten, Twice Shy’ and ‘Cleveland Rocks’ and the voice of such landmark albums as, ‘All The Young Dudes,’ ‘Mott,’ ‘Ian Hunter’ and ‘You’re Never Alone With A Schizophrenic,’ he remains a hero to fellow musicians and fans around the world. The compositions on Fingers Crossed see Hunter covering typically wide-ranging subject matter. ‘Dandy’, his fond tribute to David Bowie reflects on a relationship cemented in 1972 when Bowie produced Mott’s album All the Young Dudes and penned its hit title track. Even prior to this, with Mott, Hunter recorded four iconoclastic albums – ‘Mott The Hoople,’ ‘Mad Shadows,’ ‘Wildlife’ and ‘Brain Capers.’ The band’s artistic and commercial success continued with ‘Mott’ and ‘The Hoople,’ between them, containing the hits, ‘All The Way From Memphis,’ ‘Honaloochie Boogie,’ ‘Roll Away The Stone’ and ‘The Golden Age Of Rock ‘n’ Roll.’ On their final tour, they took out a then little known band, Queen, who would have a hit single with a song about their experiences, ‘Now I’m Here.’ It would be the only time Queen would open for anyone and the band members would stay long term friends with Ian, contributing backing vocals to his ‘All American Alien Boy’ album. Mott have also been credited by John Lydon (Sex Pistols) and Mick Jones (The Clash) as being one of the pioneers and inspirations behind the burgeoning punk / new wave movement. Later on, Ian would go on to produce Generation X’s ‘Valley Of The Dolls’ album and The Clash would play on Ian’s ‘Short Back ‘n’ Sides’ release. ‘Fingers Crossed’ continues Ian’s phenomenal run of Five Star critically acclaimed records following ‘Rant’ (2001), ‘Shrunken Heads’ (2007), ‘Man Overboard’ (2009) and ‘When I’m President’ (2012). Alongside Proper Records 30-Disc anthology box set, ‘Stranded in Reality’ due on 2 September, 2016 will be quite a year for Mr Hunter. RELEASE
OVERVIEW Future-facing UK duo patten return with their third LP & second for Warp, an album of deconstructed club music with multiple strains of Pop, Post Punk Industrial and hi-tech electronics. The record is named with the Greek letter Ψ (pronounced Psi - a volatile symbol perfectly linked to their tripped out tracks), on the sleeve artwork, presented in an intensive state of growth or collapse. patten seek to evoke and explore the worlds of deep pre-linguistic emotion and experience in all they do; in audio, visuals and live performance. As with each release from the group, Ψ marks a definitive shift in the patten project, expressed across many forms from the sleeve artwork to stage setup. Their mind-altering drive remains present, but retooled and sharpened in focus. Ψ sees patten transforming their freeze frame blur into high speed crystal clear emotive energy.

Jack Rose JACK ROSE LP-TLR-118 Street Date: September 16, 2016 Format: LP (with download) UPC: 711574797912 List Price: $19.99
A – Levee | Revolt | St. Louis Blues | Miss May’s Place | Gage Blues B – Spirits In The House | Dark Was The Night John Coltrane died at age 40, and in retrospect it seems as if the intensity of activity in his last years, the sheer torrent of notes, was an attempt at purging the music from his soul before it was too late. The guitarist Jack Rose died at 38, in 2009, and listening back to his catalog one has a similar notion. Like Coltrane, Jack Rose’s last years were marked by a shimmering intensity, an outpouring of his spirit, onto audiences and records. I believe Jack Rose felt the duty of preservation but was by no means bound by it. With his virtuoso fingerstyle technique and restless guitar explorations--modal epics, bottleneck laments, uptempo rags--it’s easy to hear a connection to tradition and at the same time a pulsing modernism: “Ancient to the Future” in the words of Chicago’s Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. Ultimately, it’s no use attempting to explain the unexplainable (natural disasters, God, art, death). As the air gets heavy before a thunderstorm, Jack Rose’s vivid guitar picking awakes in us a peculiar awareness, something ancient and American. Jack Rose’s work exists along the established continuum of American vernacular music: gospel, early jazz, folk, country blues and up through the post-1960s “American primitive” family tree from John Fahey and Robbie Basho and outward to other idiosyncratic American musicians like Albert Ayler, the NoNeck Blues Band, Captain Beefheart and Cecil Taylor. His process can best be heard as an evolution; renditions of songs would transform over time, worked out live, with changes in duration, tempo or attack, in the search for a song’s essence. Rose’s self-titled album was originally released in 2006 on the arCHIVE label, and later reissued as a CD two-fer with Dr. Ragtime and His Pals. It contains a combination of studio and live recordings. Jack Rose is marked by a sense of forward momentum, the result of several years of constant playing, with fresh versions of a number of previously attempted songs. Blind Willie Johnson’s spiritual “Dark was the Night, Cold was the Ground” is manipulated into a wailing slideguitar lament. “Levee” pops like a warning. “St. Louis Blues” (in this and its several other incarnations across his entire catalog) is a good example of Jack’s innate sense of swing, a crucial characteristic of his playing perhaps lost on some of his fingerpicking followers. The centerpiece of the album, however, is the nearly sidelong “Spirits in the House,” which begins with tentative weeping glissandos, and slowly reveals itself as a stately fingerpicked blues meditation. Jack Rose was a larger than life man with a hearty spirit--a no-bullshit gentleman--and his death continues to reverberate among the community of musicians and music people he called friends. This spirit, as evidenced within his recorded output, has proven to be indomitable and continually vital. -Scott McDowell, May 2016-

Jack Rose I DO PLAY ROCK AND ROLL LP-TLR-049 Street Date: September 16, 2016 Format: LP (with download) UPC: 711574797714 List Price: $19.99
A – Calais To Dover | Cathedral et Chartres B – Sundogs John Coltrane died at age 40, and in retrospect it seems as if the intensity of activity in his last years, the sheer torrent of notes, was an attempt at purging the music from his soul before it was too late. The guitarist Jack Rose died at 38, in 2009, and listening back to his catalog one has a similar notion. His process can best be heard as an evolution; renditions of songs would transform over time, worked out live, with changes in duration, tempo or attack, in the search for a song’s essence. I Do Play Rock and Roll, the title a mystifying nod to Mississippi Fred McDowell’s electric period, finds Jack Rose in extended drone mode, coaxing open-tuned raga meditations from his 12-string guitar. “Calais to Dover” first appeared on Rose’s classic Kensington Blues in a somewhat truncated form. The version heard here is more expansive and open-hearted, a waxing-and-waning piece of introspection. “Cathedral et Chartres” shares the same quiet romanticism, with rotating patterns and the chime of open strings, “Sundogs,” the sidelong drone abstraction that occupies Side B, stands alone among Jack’s solo work. A long-form live rendition of a track that appeared on the genredefining triple album compilation By The Fruits You Shall Know The Roots, it is perhaps most evocative of Pelt, Jack’s previous band, a minor-key free drone, with only miniscule dynamic shifts and the occasional recognizable string accent. It is territory Rose seldom traveled but completely and fully invigorating.

A – Miss May’s Place / Revolt / Bells / Knoxville Blues B – Soft Steel Piston / Linden Avenue Stomp / Blessed Be The Name Of The Lord / Walkin’ Blues / Buckdancer’s Choice John Coltrane died at age 40, and in retrospect it seems as if the intensity of activity in his last years, the sheer torrent of notes, was an attempt at purging the music from his soul before it was too late. The guitarist Jack Rose died at 38, in 2009, and listening back to his catalog one has a similar notion. His process can best be heard as an evolution; renditions of songs would transform over time, worked out live, with changes in duration, tempo or attack, in the search for a song’s essence. Dr. Ragtime and His Pals marks Rose’s step into the world of group interplay with versions of his standard repertoire arranged for a band. In its finished form, it exists as a sort of “party record” within his discography. Highlights are raucous and many, including “Linden Avenue Stomp,” “Knoxville Blues,” the spiritual “Blessed be the Name of the Lord” and Sam McGee’s “Buckdancer’s Choice.” In assembling this album, Jack chose musicians with distinctive personalities and their own personal connections to old-time music; people he could learn from. His “Pals” rotated often and in this case include the banjo player Mike Gangloff (Jack’s old accomplice in Pelt as well as the Black Twig Pickers), Micah Blue Smaldone on guitar, Glenn Jones on guitar, Nathan Bowles (Black Twig Pickers) on washboard, and Philadelphia legend Harmonica Dan (“Knoxville Blues”). The result is a late night back porch jam session, fueled by whisky, friendship, and a shared love of the old weird American music found on forgotten 78s. Jack Rose was a larger than life man with a hearty spirit--a no-bullshit gentleman--and his death continues to reverberate among the community of musicians and music people he called friends. On the cover, a bare chest and bits of bodies sketched in ragged lines of black and white. Inside, in full calor, we find Tim Presley. The dark force behind White Fence steps into the solo light with The WiNK. Lit up within the shades and the folding conflex of his many musical outfits are the musical sparks that make Tim Presley come alive — but The WiNK lives beyond all previous incarnations found in Drinks, Hair, White Fence and Darker My Love. Here, there’s fewer filters than ever between you and Tim. Thus, his name up front; a wink towards ostensible (and ominous?) solosity, making light as it whistles through the layers that cage Tim’s life. Tim’s a man in a glass booth, grabbing at scraps of paper blown at his windscreen as if they were of the greatest value. They’re actually of the ONLY value. And we grin in delight in his twist and tumult; in this process, he’s assembling his tunes in essential fashion, rolling around in the dust of his Id-bowl, then reordering the scrambled head-events into a barrage of phrases and stages, flickering through disembodied and reembodied moments, held together by Tim’s inviolable belief in the song progression underneath. The tension is unbreakable, a thin plastic slip, as he intones upon a maze of high wild mercury stings.

When you tune in to The WiNK, it takes a couple minutes for you to hear a word. But then it takes only one line until “and then you die,” uttered in a voice of mottled, throaty horror, as if ghosts that haven’t yet shown themselves are advancing through walls. Working with the creative team of producer Cate Le Bon, drummer Stella Mozgawa, and engineer Samur Khouja, Tim’s located the corners of a perfect square, with their creativity and truth crafting unique parts to function as songs within songs, giving the tunes doublejointed features that extend their original intentions. The Presley guitar hand has a powerful, yet quicksilver touch, with metallic brilliance ALWAYS, esp. in rhythm figurations, where it wrings chords out like panic signals, highlighting “Can You Blame,” “Long Bow,” “Underwater Rain,” and “Clue” (to name a few), and a cover version of Willie “Loco” Alexander’s “Kerouac” (nod and a wink!), where a smooth and steadfast lyric melody is supplanted by a throw of broken guitar and shards of keys. Throughout The WiNK, Tim’s tone is thin and princely, connecting the dots sideways and backwards to align and make the image emerge. The WiNK is produced by Cate Le Bon, who does the impregnable work of bringing a Tim Presley solo statement into focus somehow from without, by leading Tim the long away around to make a portrait of him. Cate fully embodied the producer role, picking the songs for the album from a deep pile of demos, making arrangements for the chosen songs and steadfastly suggesting that the trusted team go off the beaten path in their execution. Alert to the scribble from which Tim’s songs emerge in best home-recorded intimacy, Cate’s studio production teases such details out without losing any of the cerebral splatter — deconstructing and rebuilding the songs with a tight-knit crew whose shared language lifts Tim’s sound from the deep blue to create a different, stranger, authentic result. The pop pusher of our teenage century has slipped from behind the Fence to claim his name. It’s about Tim!

It's been nine years since we last heard from Blue States, the moniker for the musical outlet of Andrew Dragazis. Recorded, produced and, for the most part, played by Dragazis at his Lightwell studios in Stoke Newington, London, Restless Spheres doffs its cap to the soundtracks of Budd and Morricone, to 60s Greek bands such as The Forminx, to German electronic pioneers Dieter Moebius and Michael Rother and to American minimalist composers Steve Reich and Phillip Glass. Blue States began nearly twenty years ago with the young, movie soundtrack obsessed Dragazis writing and recording largely instrumental, electronic pieces alone at his parent’s house in Sussex. Music had always been around in his family, his father having been involved in the Greek pop scene of the 1960’s, jamming in Athenian clubs alongside preAphrodite’s Child legends Demis Roussos and Vangelis. The recordings found their way to nascent electronic label Memphis Industries, who went on to release a succession of 12”s including the smooth electro sweep of ‘The Trainer Shuffle’ and the filmic ‘Yé-Yé’ stylings of ‘Your Girl’. An album “Nothing Changes Under the Sun” followed in 2000 and became a surprise hit seeing Dragazis form a band, tour the world, remix Future Sound of London, work with Roy Wood and sign to XL Recordings. Subsequent albums Man Mountain and The Soundings saw Dragazis work with more traditional song structures (including Season Song, the title track of cult Zombie flick 28 Days Later) and collaborate with vocalists Ty Bulmer, latterly of New Young Pony Club, and old school friend Chris Carr. 2007’s ‘First Steps Into..’ saw Dragazis revert to working solo and heralded a return to his electronic origins with more extended, free form soundscapes. On ‘Restless Spheres’ Dragazis draws on all four of his previous albums to create something entirely different, an album imbued with a subtle majesty and hope filled melancholy.

star treatment The music of Wovenhand and songwriter/multi-instrumentalist David Eugene Edwards has always had an unparalleled intensity. Edwards’ rich, billowing and emotive voice is always the driving force of his music, but it’s catapulted by his spellbinding ability to transform instruments that many people might consider mundane relics — be it banjo, accordion, lesser-known folk instruments from around the world, or even an electric guitar — into devices of dark fury and poignant beauty. From the apocalyptic revivification of antique Americana of 16 Horsepower in the 90s to the threadbare balladry of Wovenhand’s early releases, Edwards’ music has maintained its celestial heaviness as it evolved. But now in its current incarnation, Wovenhand is a band that fully expands that power with exacting and inventive skill. It’s a sound so distinctive and compellingly crushing that even the heaviest of metal bands can’t match. Wovenhand’s current lineup includes guitarist Chuck French, bassist Neil Keener (both of Planes Mistaken For Stars) and drummer Ordy Garrison, now joined by piano/synth player Matthew Smith (Crime & The City Solution). Star Treatment was recorded at Steve Albini’s legendary Electrical Audio in Chicago with engineer Sanford Parker, who also helmed Wovenhand’s 2014 album Refractory Obdurate. While Wovenhand ought to be a familiar name to anyone interested in forward-thinking music, the album title Star Treatment isn’t a reference to our celebrity culture obsession. Rather, it’s a clever reference to concepts of astrolatry, or humanity’s enduring interest in the stars of the night sky. “It’s ethereal in its concept,” Edwards explains. “There are many layers, as always. I’ve been paying attention to the stars in the sky and in literature, and it’s a theme throughout the album.” Throughout Star Treatment, Wovenhand deftly merge the outer reaches of rock and world folk sounds with increasing urgency and force.

“...In the 1960’s, Bobby was a seminal figure in the so-called new music movement in NYC, recording with Gato Barbieri, Archie Shepp, Noah Howard and others.” - Ron J. Pelletier
On Cactus, 9 spiny and flowering arms are presented in gorgeous sound, creating a language that stems from bebop, free improv & classicism...play that feels this good is something to hold onto. In Valerie Wilmer’s important socio-political history of the jazz vanguard As Serious As Your Life (Serpent’s Tail Press, 1977), the chapter on pianist Cecil Taylor is subtitled “Eighty-Eight Tuned Drums.” Textually this reference advances the role of the piano in free music as percussive in large part, especially as the chordal and melodic directions taken after Ornette Coleman in the late 1950s often appeared to circumvent the more fixed tonalities of the keyboard. Drummers and pianists have been one core team in this music, going back to the forbears and scions of the modernjazz era — Buddy Rich and Nat Cole; Art Blakey and Herbie Nichols or Thelonious Monk; Denis Charles, Sunny Murray and Andrew Cyrille with Taylor — whether the pianist may work percussively or sculpt the music temporally and melodically. Drummer Bobby Kapp (b. Robert Kaplan on April 11, 1942 in Perth Amboy, NJ) and pianist Matthew Shipp (b. December 7, 1960 in Wilmington, DE) are a team that has only recently come together, though their affinity for one another is natural and rewarding. Cactus is their first duo recording, a spontaneous set coming on the heels of 2015’s Themes 4 Transmutation, the latter waxed under the drummer’s leadership and featuring Shipp, reedist Ras Moshe and bassist Tyler Mitchell. While the cognoscenti may be aware of Kapp’s name as a firebrand in the mid60s New York free music underground, he didn’t record as a leader back then. In recent years, after relocating to Mexico, he’s co-led the standardsrooted Fine Wine Trio with pianist Richard Wyands and bassist Gene Perla, and reunited with alto saxophonist Noah Howard before the latter’s untimely passing. Kapp’s restless energy and streetwise lyricism, yen for the blues and supple templates for unfettered expression took him from New Jersey and Staten Island to Berklee College of Music, where he studied with Alan Dawson, and then Lower Manhattan. There, he played and recorded with alto saxophonists Marion Brown and Noah Howard, pianist Dave Burrell
and tenor saxophonists Leandro ‘Gato’ Barbieri and Pharaoh Sanders before eventually settling in an artist’s colony in San Miguel de Allende. Kapp’s sideman recordings in the 1960s are scant, comprising two full LP appearances (Barbieri’s In Search of the Mystery and Howard’s At Judson Hall, both on ESP), two individual LP halves (Brown’s watershed Three for Sheep on Impulse! and Burrell’s High on Douglas), and film footage of Brown’s trio was captured in 1967 by Henry English, but all of this work presents a rolling, massive and fleet economy somewhere between Elvin Jones and Shelly Manne. His more recent outings have been somewhat under the radar, but the aspects that entice—a sure, tempestuous detail—are toned with age, experience and fidelity. Shipp’s piano is the perfect foil for Kapp’s dryly doled-out metric inventions, his sinewy but factual movements through erudite melody, resonant stomps and granular sideways gestures creating fields and objects through which the drummer’s open, supple brushwork and woody rolls float, undercut and weave. Shipp has worked with a wide range of individual, creative drummers—including Newman Taylor Baker, Whit Dickey, Guillermo E. Brown, Susie Ibarra, Marc Edwards and Steve McCall—and says of Kapp that “Bobby is a marvel as he combines the best of old school drumming with a real feel for pulse and breaking the circle that exists in the avant-garde. However, he can open the beat up in a way where you can flow with the wave and never lose the line. His touch is really refined and that adds to the beauty of his sound. I am always looking for ways to make my comping deeper and working with someone who has played with all the people he has deepens my thing. Also, the sound he gets off the cymbals has a resonance that is beyond deep—it’s like swimming in pure vibration.” On Cactus, nine spiny and flowering dialogic arms are presented in gorgeous sound, creating a language that stems from bebop, free improvisation and classicism but are of the present and specific to these two musicians. Rigorous, spontaneous play that feels this good is something to hold onto.

Soul Jazz Records Presents
NIGERIA SOUL FEVER Afro Funk, Disco and Boogie: West African Disco Mayhem! 16th Sep 2016 No shipments outside of North America
Soul Jazz Records’ new Nigeria Soul Fever is their first release to explore the vast wealth of Nigerian music recorded in the 1970s. The new album comes with introductory sleeve-notes by Bill Brewster (author of Last Night A DJ Saved My Life). Packed-full with Afro-Funk, Disco and Boogie all from Nigeria, this triple album/double CD set brings together a stunning collection of diverse West African sounds. Whilst a small handful of the artists featured (Joni Haastrup, Tee Mac, Christy Essien) have seen the light of day outside Africa, this is essentially a collection of killer tracks by an array of artists completely unknown outside of Nigeria. Artists such as Don Bruce & The Angels, Akin Richards & The Executives, Angela Starr, Jimmy Sherry & The Music Agents. It’s no surprise that these records are extremely rare and expensive to buy individually so this album will save you going broke trying to find them. These recordings were made at a time when Nigeria’s trade restrictions banned imported records. Whilst new musical trends (such as American soul, funk, disco etc) entered and influenced the country, the local music scene remained just that – local. Consequently, these recordings remain practically unknown to anyone outside of the country. Nigeria Soul Fever is released as triple-album vinyl + download, double-CD digi-pack and digital download. This album follows on from Soul Jazz Records’ 1960s collection Nigeria Freedom Sounds, released last month, and will be followed by the reissue of the incredibly rare and groovy Nigerian 1980 disco boogie funk album Tee Mac’s Night Illusion.

NO EXPORT (JAPAN, S. AMERICA EXPORT OK) TRACK LISTING:
Promises is the introduction to a fresh chapter in the story of ENTRANCE. ENTRANCE is the multi-talented singer-songwriter Guy Blakeslee. An artist’s artist, ENTRANCE is a musician with the blues running through his veins. His newest creations add up to a set of rich, cinematic songs featuring expansive orchestration and imaginative story telling, as unique to himself as they are, at times, evocative of Townes Van Zandt, Scott Walker and Gene Clark. Among his fans, he counts the likes of Spike Jonze, who featured ENTRANCE’s interpretation of Skip James’ “I’m So Glad” in the film Her. Continuing in this vein, his Thrill Jockey debut is the emotive production Promises. As with all new beginnings, there is an element of return. Resurrecting the name ENTRANCE signifies leaving something behind. This time around, the sound of ENTRANCE dramatizes the tension between time as measured on a clock and the felt experience of it. Everything has been stripped away except the essential: the focus is on the voice- the words and the feeling. I’m interested in communicating a shared universal experience in an era when “individuality” is a championed product. I once approached songwriting as a coping mechanism for my own personal struggles. However, now I have shifted my focus to the exploration of a collective understanding.

The whole record is about the interplay and conflict between inwardness and outwardness, revealed as a personal obsession through a rigorous daily practice of automatic writing. Waking up and immediately documenting the intricacies of my mental world has shown me what a freak I am - but also what I care about.
Artwork for the EP is by acclaimed LA artist Amanda Charchian and the photos were shot by Edouard Plongeon in Paris
“Promises” in particular was inspired by Stephen Hawking, who in spite of being the acknowledged expert on the nature of time, still constantly changes his views and has to admit he doesn’t really understand it. Time is a constant contradiction in all of our lives. We have to live within its bounds, and yet experience it in myriad ways, marking our milestones on cross cultural calendars, in disparate time zones. Such paradoxes were on my mind when I wrote the lyrics.
“A psychedelic shaman bringing us news from other planes of existence.” - Pitchfork
“time is a cruel yet forgiving friend who slaps your face and then holds your hand leaves you starting from scratch all over again in the ruins of your best laid plans”
“ENTRANCE is a spiritual revolutionary” - Cat Power
“Strange and magical” - The Guardian “ENTRANCE didn’t meet the devil at the crossroads, he met some loved-up space aliens who made him the International Son of Cosmic Blues.” - NME “I recently saw ENTRANCE play, and was raised to tears by how he can so seamlessly flow between a traditional hymn and one of his own perennial pieces in just a few lines...” Devendra Banhart

GENRE : ROCK / EXPERIMENTAL FILE UNDER: “H” Helen Money RELEASE DATE : September 16, 2016
NO EXPORT (JAPAN, S. AMERICA EXPORT OK) TRACK LISTING: Helen Money’s Become Zero continues cellist Alison Chesley’s exploration of emotive and intense music. Written after the death of both of her parents, Become Zero amplifies Chesley’s musical ferocity with palpable sadness and striking beauty. Using her extensively manipulated cello, Chesley joins forces once more with drummer Jason Roeder (Sleep, Neurosis), Rachel Grimes (Rachel’s) and collaborator and co-producer Will Thomas (who provides sound effects and samples) on an album that is incredibly personal and visceral. Through her music, Chesley takes us on a journey as she grapples with the concepts and the emotions of life’s end: loss, isolation, sorrow, peace and resolution. “Vanished Star” imagines a place where this life and what lies beyond it intersect in an eerie waltz between the piano and cello. “Facing the Sun,” takes its title from the loosely-translated name of the Tataviam Indians, who lived in the San Fernando Valley where Chesley grew up. “It also refers to my father who loved the Valley and loved sitting outside and feeling the sun on his skin,” Chesley says. “Radiate” begins in a place of struggle and hardship which is eventually transcended. The song starts with a dissonant, distorted chord on the cello and builds to a place where it fights with itself before finally falling apart. “To end the piece I wanted it to sound like it was dissolving into space - another reference to my father, who worked on the Apollo and Space Shuttle programs,” says Chesley. “Will and I even managed to replicate the sound of a satellite pinging at the end. The ending feels very peaceful to me. Resolved.” On “Blood and Bone,” Chesley brought in pianist Rachel Grimes. While “Blood and Bone” is acoustic, don’t assume that it’s a gentler piece. “One of the things I struggle with as a composer is writing for my cello without any effects, especially music that is as powerful as my amplified pieces,” Chesley says. She had been practicing the 5th cello suite by JS Bach, a “very dark piece,” as she wrote Become Zero. In this suite, Bach has the cellist tune the top string down a whole step, and the music itself is very dissonant and powerful. Chesley wanted to incorporate the piano which adds a nice depth and percussiveness to the texture. So she opened the piece with those very stark chords and brought the cello in, letting it gradually take over. Much of Become Zero was recorded at Thomas’ Los Angeles studio. Additional recording was done at Grimes’ studio outside of Louisville, Kentucky, and at East/ West Studios in Hollywood. While Chesley had previously exclusively recorded analog to tape with Steve Albini, she went in a new direction for her Thrill Jockey debut. “I wanted to explore the freedom provided by digital recording,” Alison explains. “there is simply more exibility with regards to multi-tracking...such as interfacing with electronic sounds, supplementing tracks with MIDI sounds, and ease of movement between the analog and digital domain. Become Zero’s songs called for a much wider palate of sounds.” Roeder’s drums were recorded separately at East/West Studios on a vintage Neve console. Chesley’s expanded approach to recording results in a beautiful mix of acoustic and processed sounds, a perfect t for an album that is at once highly visceral and delicately ethereal.

Grumbling Fur Furfour
Thrill - 412
Somewhere, in the still-remaining quiet places of London, Grumbling Fur is at work. This being is the joint manifestation of Alexander Tucker and Daniel O’Sullivan which, since 2011, has birthed a series of increasingly focused albums of psychedelic pop. Their new album, Furfour, is a record that’s the sum of a dizzying array of creative projects by two key figures in an esoteric underground still thriving despite the pressures and pains of modern London. Furfour gradually emerged over three years of writing and recording at 147 Tower Gardens, the strange ivy-shrouded house that Tucker and O’Sullivan once called home. It’s an album whose warm heart is shaped, say Grumbling Fur, by birth, loss, friendship, death, those things that happen to us all. Yet as ever with this duo, it’s altered through fantasy and sci-fi, Carlos Castenada, shamanic mind warp, house ghosts and meditation. It’s in many ways remarkable that two such distinct personalities with their roots and much of their activity in the cultural left field can combine in a record that sounds so rooted, focused, and accessible. 2016 is a already a year of intense activity for Tucker and O’Sullivan outside of Grumbling Fur : Tucker’s latest comic was featured in Art Review, a full publication, World In The Force, will follow on Breakdown Press, along with a new solo album. O’Sullivan has been at the core of the wildly successful This Heat reconstitution, and with Massimo Pupillo of Zu recently released Laniakea. As part of Ulver, he released ATGCLVLSSCAP, a pan-zodiacal excursion in sound, and later this year there’ll be a new album from Æthenor (a collaboration between O’Sullivan, Steve Noble and Stephen O’Malley). In the guise of the Grumbling Fur Time Machine Orchestra, Tucker and O’Sullivan have just released a 12” of ROSE, their collaborative piece with Turner Prize-nominee Mark Titchner, who in turn produced the artwork for Furfour. There’ve also been a series of live collaborations with Charlemagne Palestine. This breadth of operation frees O’Sullivan and Tucker to create simple, hypnotically engaging songs from paradoxically freeform beginnings. Shaping the lot are their long-standing shared musical affections, a polyglot music encompassing orchestrated poptones, collage, dub and beat-making as well as experimental and drone elements: touchtones might include Faust, Arthur Russell, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Moondog, Michael Nyman, Gate, Syd Barrett, Stereolab, Vibracathedral Orchestra, Ashtray Navigations, Cc Hennix and Madlib. The 12 songs and interstitial abstract pieces that make up Furfourwere created not out of structure or theme, and rarely began at the beginning. Instead, Grumbling Fur work by generating sounds and ideas first and then moulding structures and ideas around this. “Songs are about including the process in the finished piece and spontaneous ideas are laid down and a structure starts to emerge from this source,” they explain: “first thought best thought is our motto”. On Furfour, Grumbling Fur is joined by This Heat’s Charles Bullen and Isobel Sollenberger from Bardo Pond on some tracks, all part of Grumbling Fur’s quest “for kindred spirits, open souls and players we respect.”

AMERICA EXPORT OK) TRACK LISTING: Light Falls features Wrekmeister Harmonies joined by members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and guest appearances from Ryley Walker and Cooper Crain (Cave, Bitchin Bajas). Album artwork by legendary outsider artist Nick Blinko (Rudimentary Peni). The shape-shifting drone, modern classical, outrock and extreme metal collective, led by the enigmatic and visionary musician JR Robinson, came into chaotic life in 2006 with the modus operandi of performing and recording long pieces in museums, mausoleums and other impressive public spaces. Over three inimitable albums, released at a feverish pace (You’ve Always Meant So Much to Me, 2013; Then It All Came Down, 2014; Night of Your Ascension, 2015) JR proved himself to be a master collaborator - curating and orchestrating the talents of such varied underground luminaries as Jef Whitehead of Leviathan; Alexander Hacke of Einstürzende Neubauten; David Yow of The Jesus Lizard; Chip King and Lee Buford of The Body; Marissa Nadler; Sanford Parker of Minsk; the free-improv cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm; Chris Brokaw of Codeine; and jazz composer Ken Vandermark. Following the critical success of last year’s Night Of Your Ascension, which featured no less than 30 musicians, JR felt it was time to seek out new methods, processes and creative strategies. Focusing his energies on a smaller collective. Wrekmeister Harmonies core is JR (vocals, guitar) and Esther Shaw (keyboards, piano, violin, vocals). They are joined by Godspeed You! Black Emperor musicians Thierry Amar on bass and contrabass; Sophie Trudeau on piano, violin and vocals; and Timothy Herzog on drums. The title of the album originates from the text of If This Is A Man, Primo Levi’s meditation on the year the author spent as an inmate at Auschwitz. The Italian Jewish chemist and anti-fascist resistance fighter suggested in this seminal work that inhumanity comes about when things change slowly and people begin accepting things that they would normally find reprehensible. JR adds: “I wanted to sonically convey the idea of slow, creeping change. When I came up with the title I was thinking of how when daylight turns to night time it’s a very gradual process. You are lulled into watching this slow, peaceful sunset but then all of a sudden you look up and it’s dark.” The album opens up with “Light Falls I: The Mantra” with JR intoning the phrases, “Stay in, go out, get sick, get well, light falls” over a swelling riff that features the albums only two guest musicians, singer songwriter Ryley Walker and Cooper Crain, solidifying the idea of slow change, easing the passage toward something cataclysmic - both sonically and spiritually. The album builds inexorably towards the Muddy Waters referencing centrepiece, “Where Have You Been My Lovely Son?” which has “an incredibly personal” meaning for JR: “It is about the disintegration of a relationship that I had with my son’s mother. My son and I had a really intense, close relationship and as a result of this break up I’ve lost that connection. There has been a lot of difficulty and a lot of uncomfortable moments, so it was a personal message to my son.” And then finally, Wrekmeister Harmonies’ most focused album to date resolves in the tempestuous, apocalyptic “Some Were Saved Some Drowned.” - John Doran May 2016

It started with an email to Adam Shore, the Red Bull Music Academy producer I knew from his time at Vice when he produced the Boredoms’ 77 Boadrum. I wanted to present a piece that was more ambitious than anything I had done before, but what I had in mind was quite simple. It was an idea; maybe one that wasn’t particularly interesting in retrospect, but it was there. It would be a durational piece without much conceptual rigor but something would happen aurally. I was certain it would be worth hearing. Adam was intrigued by the idea. I sent him some demos of some stuff I had worked on with William Basinski, wrote up a few ideas and waited. A few months later Adam called me and told me that Red Bull had signed off on the project. I was terrified. Now I actually had to write a piece. I was faced with a full-on bout of impostor syndrome. Why did I say that I wanted to do this kind of thing? The original idea was so simple that I lost faith in it. It was time for something new. I started writing the piece, imagining a kind of rapid-fire, highly orchestrated percussion piece that would have elements of that original drone, but would include technical passages that would require trained musicians. After a month or two I was told that one of the most viable locations for the performance was going to be the Beaux-Arts Court at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, an absolutely stunning space in the middle of the museum with an immense ceiling, boundless sky-lights and a deco floor. Honestly, I didn’t imagine that the venue would have any impact on what I was writing. When I arrived at the museum to check out the space and meet with the members of the Red Bull production team, the woman in charge asked me if I had thought about equipment for the event. I actually didn’t know. I wasn’t sure of the instrumentation yet — I was thinking all the drummers would bring their own gear, but she urged me to rent all of the equipment. “Assume you won’t exceed the rental budget,” she said. One unanticipated factor about the space that might have an impact on what I was writing? There was a natural 7.2 second reverb in the room. All my carefully crafted and detailed percussion parts would quickly turn into a sea of aural mush. I hated what I was writing anyway, so I just embraced the reverb. This piece was gonna involve large and slow gestures; something that I was more comfortable with anyway. So, back to the drawing board. I started working on the composition with my oldest friend, Brian Coughlin, the founder and leader of Fireworks Ensemble. Together, we talked over my ideas. Using a percussion reference book and Wikipedia, I started a list of pitched percussion instruments. Assuming that nothing was off-limits, I included 5 different sized timpani, an assortment of Thai nipple gongs, amglocken, crotales, vibraphone, tubular bells, pitched pipes, temple bowls among drum sets, cymbals and electric instruments. I also was listening to a lot of John Tavener and Anonymous 4, so I added four singers to the ensemble, and then I holed up in my studio, slowly freaking out while worrying over details of my score. When the musicians and I gathered at the SIR rehearsal studios in far West Midtown Manhattan, I felt truly terrified. I was in front of a room full of professionals who looked to me for direction. At that moment I decided to just push through my feelings of inadequacy and try to capture what was on the score.

Spaceman (their duo record on Northern Spy for RSD 2014) “Beast of a drummer.” - Pitchfork
The following day, we played the piece twice, in a kind of installation in the middle of the BeauxArts Court, and recorded everything. It was far from what I had originally imagined. It was not a monstrous, unceasing drone. It was something more nuanced. There were long sections of wordless vocalizing. It was meant to be emotional.
“A musician who has become deeply enmeshed in the underground rock world of New York and beyond.” - The New York Times
The title 100 Disciplines refers to Sun Ra’s Disciplines; pieces that he wrote for the Arkestra members to run through in order to hone their true nature through their instruments.
“Kid Millions continues to stretch our expectations of what is achievable with a bunch of tuned drums” - The Quietus
What is this piece of music? I think it’s something unique and I’m happy it’s getting out there. I hope you’re able to block out some time put on some headphones and really sink into the experience. Welcome to 100 Disciplines! Now do it yourself.

ANICON - EXEGESES LP This summer we welcome another project that has long been on our radar, Brooklyn black metal band Anicon. Although we already considered them to be sort of extended family (drummer Lev Weinstein is a part of Krallice while bassist Alexander DeMaria performs as part of the Yellow Eyes live lineup) we are none-the-less quite pleased to welcome Anicon as a proper part of the label family as they join us to present their first full-length album, Exegeses. Founding members Nolan Voss and Owen Rundquist began writing material together for this project in 2010, at that time planning to name their first EP Anicon while the project itself would remain nameless, allowing the EP to stand as a singular expression. Quickly the project developed into a full band that began writing more material, so the Anicon name would be repurposed.

Exegeses is the result of constant writing over the course of two years. And although other material was written and recorded through this time, the pieces chosen for the album were selected to work together as a single statement, similar to the original EP but in a significantly more developed fashion. The works on Exegeses represent what is very much a new stage for Anicon. Though they are thoroughly rooted in the US black metal sound, their style reaches further into the realm of the more technical. Favoring elaborately composed pieces that still retain every bit of fury and visceral energy that black metal is fundamentally founded upon. The album was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Colin Marston at Menegroth in November 2015. It will be presented as a gatefold LP with stunning photography by Kari Greer. A digital download code will be included. The vinyl has an expected release date of July 2016, while a CD edition will be released simultaneously in Europe via Avantgarde Music. All LPs on black vinyl.

www.fofmusic.net - For more information, please contact: jenn@fofmusic.net Mark Nieto has tangled with the Los Angeles underground for the better part of the last decade, appearing regularly on local radio, playing parties and fine-tuning an aesthetic that fits comfortable at the intersection of instrumental guitar music and experimental electronic structures. It’s as COMBAT! that Nieto’s various projects and influences meet though and this Fall the native Angeleno will release his debut self-titled album on Friends of Friends. ‘COMBAT!’ is comprised of 13 songs that fall at various points along the intersection of experimental guitar music and an array of electronic sounds, ranging from house on one end of the spectrum and ambient on the other. With the thought of crafting optimal music for emotional drives around Los Angeles, COMBAT! recorded the ‘COMBAT!’ LP while traveling around the globe, garnering wisdom from an array of locales while always keeping his indomitable Southern California heritage in peripheral focus.

With past relationships, growing pains and an unavoidable sense of place (and displacement) forming the emotional crux of the album, tracks like “Days of Dust” and “Heavy Accent” are deeply evocative efforts, full of harmonically complex guitar bits, organic rhythms and a deeply understood sense of atmosphere. The album is entirely instrumental, but with energetic highs like “Jacaranda” and “Open And Close The Globe”, you’d be hard-pressed to not be completely enveloped in COMBAT!’s world as his self-titled debut hits peaks and valleys rarely found on a debut release. And while this is COMBAT!’s official debut, real Los Angeles heads will know him from past projects and a long-running KXLU show, all components of his greater musical history. Key Points:

DJ AMIR PRESENTS GOOD MUSIC AND CULTURE: RARE LATIN SOUNDS FROM ACROSS THE AMERICAS About A highly respected crate digger, DJ extraordinaire, record label go-to-guy and one half of dynamite duo Kon & Amir, we are proud to present this very special collection of music chosen by Amir. Having dedicated his life to mapping hip hop and dance music's lineage, the Boston native has been called upon by Capitol Records, Pete Rock and Shady Records among others for his musical expertise over the years, not to mention having curated quite an incredible catalogue of compilations for BBE. Put simply, this guy has an almost unrivalled ear for a great record. As you may well have guessed from the title, this latest outing has a distinctly latin flavour. Comprising a selection of obscure tracks from the 60's and 70's recorded mainly in New York (but featuring artists from Detroit and the Dominican Republic), there are bound to be new discoveries here for even the most ardent collector. Ranging styles are on display here, but the record has a definite leaning toward upbeat Salsa & Guaguancó. Latin superstars such as Joey Pastrana and Louie Colon may have been household names among the tenements of East Harlem & The Bronx back in the day, but they have never reached a mainstream audience outside the Latin community. Now thanks to Amir's relentless digging, some of the finest and most authentic latin dance music can be enjoyed on one fiery-hot record.

CHIVALROUS AMOEKONS FANATIC VOYAGE SN20 LP/CS List Price: $20.98/$8.98 Street: September 16, 2016 NO EXPORT TO EUROPE, VOYAGE EVERYWHERE ELSE
Sea Note and Palace Records join forces to welcome Chivalrous Amoekons to our rowdy collective stable! Here we have one of the hottest road-leathered bands in recent memory, laying it all on the line for a joyous Fanatic Voyage to the center of the never-ending enigma of The Mekons. Pouring out from the bars of the opening number, the soulful strut of “Curse” makes us realize that we are in the hands of a fiendish and indomitable force — but ain’t we always been?
lovely people walk the floor dressed to kill and built for war....I couldn’t face a naked dinner on a plate I’m just not human tonight....this is meant to be a painkiller but it’s so good it hurts....dreams black and blue I am crazy....these shapes and symbols, I know their meaning....the more you stray, the more you’re saved....this is our battle cry: ai i yi yi yi yi!
TRACK LISTING: THE CURSE LOVE LETTER BIG ZOMBIE POWERS & HORROR (SOMETIMES I FEEL LIKE) FLETCHER CHRISTIAN I AM CRAZY LAST DANCE FANTASTIC VOYAGE REVENGE ONE X ONE CHIVALRY CASSETTE CONTAINS TWO ADDITIONAL SONGS: POWERS & HORROR REVENGE
Once upon a long time ago, The Mekons shot through the sprawl of the British punk scene and soon thereafter, found themselves born again to rock and roll to their roots. Once they’d found how to play it that way (with a sharp-quilled approach to the writing), their songs of politics made personal, outraged satire served both wet and dry and heartstruck humanity hit many listeners right between the ears, landing the kind of blow that only the most essential rock music can. Their anomaly has evolved over four decades and eighteen albums (with a new release coming on Bloodshot in September!), but those entranced listeners aren’t yet ready to back down on their claim.
Equipped with a variety of voices, Bonnie’s band of 2012 was ideally suited to the multi-headed attack of The Mekons, and literally prepared too — they were packing a whole set of whole set of Mekons material in addition to the extensive Bonny catalog and, in the midst of a European tour, dropped it on an unsuspecting audience in Zurich! Is it this that accounts for the high spirits, thick-bottomed rock ’n‘ roll and fleet-footed country style on display here? Or is it that the songs of The Mekons simply rock?
Fanatic Voyage was mixed in homage to Lou Reed’s Street Hassle, removing all aspects of the live event beyond the musical performance. Bitchin Bajas’ Cooper Crain was brought in to commit this execution; his deft edits allow the band their breathless frenzy while leaving no trace of what must surely have been an gobsmacked Swiss crowd.
Featuring the playing and singing of Ben Boye, Van Campbell, Danny Kiely, Emmett “The Cairo Bonny ‘Prince’ Billy’s Will Oldham is one such Gang” Kelly, Angel Olsen and Bonnie ‘Prince’ listener. In fact, the guys in the office next door to us Billy, Fanatic Voyage is an exquisite tribute not just first heard him singing a song called “For the Mekons, to The Mekons, but to the spirit and image of rock et al” in the company of the Palace Brothers back and roll, the rights of the righteous man and to time, in 1992, and that right there was enough to get the that great elevator and annihilator, from which we will ball rolling. The Mekons inspired an optimism in this always have much to learn. In the spirit as well of The young man that accepted the course of all paths and Mekons to pay forward to the next generation with all fates in life, so long as they could be righteous. And all efforts, proceeds from the sale of these recordings the path from there has never been less than that. In will go to Roots of Music in New Orleans, Louisiana, those early days of Brothers, Songs and Music, the whose work empowers local youth through music third Palace single featured a fine-toothed rendition education, academic support and mentorship, while of Sally Timms’ “Horses.” Some years later, Bonny preserving and promoting the unique music and himself performed at The Mekons’ 30th anniversary cultural heritage of their city, which has transformed shows at The Mutiny in Chicago, filling in for Tom so many lives already. Greenhalgh in true deputy style. But all this wasn’t enough — nor were the thousand nights of bellowing Oh there was a day that heroes walked the earth. It along with the stereo. Something more needed doing; was today. Come on the Fanatic voyage, and learn a bellowing all-Mekons blowout with a kick-ass band, what you should know! squint-eyed and gnarled fist in the air!

Heavyweight vinyl, includes download code, 8-page booklet with extracts from forthcoming Spacebound Apes piano book and Lincoln the Ape sticker. ‘Spacebound Apes’ is the sixth studio recording from Neil Cowley Trio; a concept album that weaves a glorious soundtrack of breathtaking music around a magical, thoughtprovoking tale. Pianist/composer Cowley shot to international fame through his work with bands such as the Brand New Heavies and more recently with Adele (he played piano on both ‘19’ and ‘21’). His five jazz trio albums released since 2006 have seen the group rise to the very top of the UK jazz scene both critically and commercially. On ‘Spacebound Apes’ hypnotic passages create heart-pounding suspense while sweet, whispered themes create heart-shattering empathy. Bold, bombastic tunes create drama, and in a departure from the trio's usual acoustic setting, electronics orchestrate desolation and despair.
Widely acclaimed as a dazzling composer, Cowley demonstrates his flair for bold, dynamic, emotional music with cinematic themes that has an enormously broad appeal. The trio have, over their ten year history built a reputation as being one of the genres most captivating live bands performing in a variety of genre-crossing settings. BENJAMIN & THE RIGHT DIRECTION LIGHT OF MY LIFE b/w DREAMIN’S FOR FREE PST001 Benjamin & The Right Direction make their debut with two sure-fire soulful sides for your dance floor - "Light Of My Life" b/w "Dreamin’s For Free". The A side tells the age old story of a love affair born on a New York City subway train. Employing the rhythms of steamy summer nights in the city, it’s layered with big boss brass, syrup sweet group harmony and topped off with an irresistible chorus. The easy tempo of "Dreamin’s For Free" has the charming cheek-to-cheek slow dance appeal of the uptown ballads of the early 60’s. The Spanish guitar and the swirling strings fit snuggly in the dusty 45 box where you store your tear-jerkers, low-riders and treasured memories. And if you listen closely you’ll find a message, both timeless and timely.

The Kansas City band wants to fuel your next party with it’s bombastic, dark, progressive style of experimental music that is a mixture of both pop and rock. The band has been described by Mills Record Company as, "Having all the sex appeal of The Weeknd and all the grit of Rage Against the Machine–the combination makes for a performance that is explosive." Their new record, All Bases Covered, started to come together with producer Adam Mcgill(formerly of The Republic Tigers) when he started performing with the band. The album's lead single is already in regular rotation on hometown station 90.9 The Bridge. All Bases Covered was recorded between the band's home studio and Element Recording Studios in the spring of 2016. About:
The second album of music by Mathias H. Tjønn as Racing Heart, "What Comes After" is a political record trying to be personal rather than preachy. Produced by Hanne Hukkelberg (a renowned artist in her own right), the album is a stark departure from Racing Heart's debut record in both style and substance. Instead of looking inwards, we look outwards. Instead of being folk-based, we aim to meld acoustic instruments and synthesized sounds. This album has sharp edges. Genre-wise, "What Comes After" is an experimental pop album, inspired by musicians such as David Sylvian, Winston Tong and John Foxx. Aided greatly by the creativity of musician Jenny Hval who contributes both lyrics and vocals, the songs are propelled by the drums and programming of Martin Langlie (Susanne Sundfør, Pantha du Prince, Valkyrien Allstars). Recorded at Engfelt & Forsgren studio in Oslo and mixed both there and in New York by engineer Aki Nishimura (Elliot Scheiner, Tony Visconti) from Avatar Studios, NYC. Mastered by Morgan Nicolaysen at Propeller Audio.

Austin Young Band Not So Simple
The VizzTone label group is proud to present the new album from the Austin Young Band – Not So Simple, with a September 16, 2016 release date. This album is the highly anticipated followup to Austin’s 2013 VizzTone debut, Blue As Can Be, which brought him to national attention as one of the most exciting young faces in the blues. Hailing from Denver, Colorado, the Austin Young Band delivers their signature brand of high energy blues rock, with an emphasis on guitar virtuosity and a soulful, natural vocal delivery. This album also highlights Austin’s songwriting, which has become more personal, diverse and complex. The Austin Young Band performs mostly as a power trio, featuring Alex Goldberg on bass and Forrest “the Rim Wrecker” Raup on drums. On the record they are occasionally augmented by organ or horns. The final track, “Angel Flying Home,” is a moving tribute to Austin’s father, to whom the record is dedicated, performed solo by Ausin on electric guitar and vocals. All songs are original compositions from Austin and the band, incorporating fresh elements of contemporary blues and rock that reflect Austin’s many influences, from classic blues heroes like Albert King and Hubert Sumlin to contemporary artists including the likes of Gary Clark, Jr., Eric Gales and Joe Bonamassa Hints of broader influences can be heard in the songs, as Austin and the band draw from a broad palette of contemporary music. With an evolving and maturing style, the Austin Young Band incorporates the sheer honesty of the blues and performs it with a modern, high energy sound that breaks new ground while remaining faithful and always doing justice to its traditional roots.

An accomplished statement of intent, Ovum Hum’s singular debut Summer Casts Shadows explores a path of its own in electronic music combining coldwave’s brooding pulse, sound system music’s visceral immediacy, and forward-thinking rhythmic structures that obscure the boundaries of hip-hop, dub, and noise.
Tracklist:
1. The Elusive Chaperon (Intro) 2. Title Waive 3. Altitude Adjustment 4. Hybrid Tribes 5. Underneath The Lion’s Tail 6. Ancient Tongues 7. Haus of Solecism 8. Essay In Miniature 9. Symphony Of Saliva 10. Taste The Reign (Interlude) 11. (Lunar) Weight-Watchers
With a keen ear for sampling post-punk’s most effervescent textures and a savvy for controlled menace, Ovum Hum’s hybrid creations are rich with moody nihilism while embracing the funky bombast of his beat-scene contemporaries. Inspired by the freedom in the genre-bending output he heard from LA’s Low End Theory collective, Ovum Hum comments “Not only was it music that I felt I needed in my life, but the energy and diversity that I found in it directly influenced me to create something of my own”. Quietly crafting compositions in 12. Summer Casts Shadows anonymity for the past five years, the Los Angeles producer’s 30 twelve-track album arrives fully-formed and unique in identity, soundcloud.com/ovumhum before even stepping foot on a stage. instagram.com/ovumhum.jpg twitter.com/ovumhum
Summer Casts Shadows frenetically weaves its way through fried industrial boogie excursions, heavy half-time beats, slippery melodies, screwed synth exotica, and spectral hiss cutting through a fabric of gritty textures. Ovum Hum’s instrumental dirges develop in a non-linear fashion and almost Kowloon Records LTD seem to reveal a visual shape as they build in intensity. Many Suite 11 - Penhurst House 352-356 Battersea Park Road of the electronic elements were taken from earlier minimal London SW11 3BY wave sketches, then chopped and repurposed, fusing them phone: +44 203 3184272 with booming downtempo drums and slinky mechanical grooves. The result is a fresh take on straddling the fine Contact: Wendy Higgs production line between today’s post-Dilla beat constructions wendy@redeyeworldwide.com and Conny Plank’s hypnotic body music chug. IN THE WOODSÉ
Ð Pure Norway has always been the most fertile of lands for experimental and avant-garde Metal. During the last three decades fabulous visionaries have pushed beyond boundaries time and time again, propagating the ever-healthy Metal underground and its myriad sub-genres. The most prestigious and mythical of all are the legendary IN THE WOODSÉ the originators of truly progressive Dark Metal. Now, 21 years after their singular, beyond-classic debut "Heart Of The Ages" and 17 protracted years after last full-length "Strange In Stereo", a reimagined and revitalised IN THE WOODSÉ deliver "Pure" - a stunningly focussed new record Ð a distillation of everything that makes them one of the greats. The prolonged absence has led to a propulsive reinvigoration, a renewed directness and melodic refinement, a set of addictive songs grounded in the same strain of epic, atmospheric and psychedelic blackened Prog-Doom the band mined for their 1997 masterpiece "Omnio" Ð although this record is anything but a re-tread of old terrain.
ARTIST : IN THE WOODSÉ TITLE : Pure ORIGIN : Norway CAT# DMP0146 FORMAT : Digipack CD GENRE : Progressive Dark Metal LIST PRICE : $16.99 UPC : 3663663001325
As always with IN THE WOODSÉ the exploratory nature of the music stems from the freedom of 70's progressive rock: the dreaminess of vintage FLOYD and CAMEL, the skewed restlessness of prime CRIMSON, the perpetual questing of GABRIEL-era GENESIS and subtle Krautrock intimations. The band have evolved, matured, the unit revelling in the pleasures of restraint. The mindchaos of youth has transmogrified into the dark divinity of wisdom that only experience can bring - a welcome respite in times of ephemeral pleasures and hyperactive multiplicities.
RELEASE DATE : September 16th 2016 TRACKLIST: 01. Pure At core "Pure" is a collection of huge-sounding, 02. Blue Oceans Rise (Like A War) all-enveloping cosmic tales - a supermassive 03. Devil's At The Door record fusing epic Dark Metal with hook-ridden doom-tinged modernism, the mindÕ s eye trained 04. The Recalcitrant Protagonist far beyond the archaic firmament deep into 05.
