Formed in the basements and attics surrounding Syracuse University in 2006, Ra Ra Riot released their acclaimed debut The Rhumb Line on Barsuk in 2008. NPR Music said their 2010 release The Orchard’s “10 songs positively burst with sophistication, precision and polish,” and their musical sophistication is matched by a great live show and a large and active audience. Having sold over 125k albums and almost 350k song downloads in the US in their young career, the band is poised with its third album Beta Love to meet the high expectations of its eager fan base.

Beta Love marks Ra Ra Riot’s first outing as a four-piece. Inspired by their lean new lineup (with Wes Miles on vocals, Milo Bonacci on guitar, Mathieu Santos on bass and Rebecca Zeller on violin), the recording process found the band members expanding and re-defining their roles within the new makeup of the group. They built upon demos created mostly by Miles and producer Dennis Herring (Modest Mouse, Elvis Costello, Wavves) at Sweet Tea Studios in Oxford, MS. Joined by session drummer Josh Freese (Devo, Nine Inch Nails, Weezer) the band enjoyed exploring its potential, experimenting with new influences and exciting sounds.

Mathieu said of the sessions, “Making the record was a lot of fun for us, because we were in a completely different environment, trying a completely new approach. We’d been used to arriving at a session with every song totally arranged and figured out, but in Oxford, a lot of the creative decision-making happened in the studio, on the fly. We wanted to be outside of our collective comfort zone for this record. We wanted to be open to new things happening. There was a lot of building up and tearing down with Dennis—a lot of problem solving, a lot of trial and error, and that was really exciting for us.”

It just so happens that the muse that guides them is completely outside of current rock trends. Like Richard Thompson’s work from the mid-70s, the band’s poetic lyrics and slow, heavy build are not stuff of the quick fix. Their music stands in stark contrast to a culture that is more about video and track placement than criticism and discourse. As such, it should come as no surprise that they have found success in the United Kingdom, Thompson’s birthplace. Arbouretum has been praised in Mojo 4 star reviews that end with phrases like “It just does not get much better,” a Guardian piece proclaiming that they are “One of the most distinctive voices around” and an Uncut 4 star review calling the music “Dense, thrilling and literate.” Coming Out of the Fog continues Arbouretum’s journey as their most focused and best-recorded album to date. Dave Heumann’s vocals soar atop his guitar solos and Corey Allender’s crunchy bass lines. Arbouretum have reigned in some of their maximalist tendencies, with every song coming in under 7 minutes. Heumann, Allender, Brian Carey (drums), and Matthew Pierce (keyboard, synthesizer, percussion), continue to mine the same breadth of styles made familiar on The Gathering and Song of the Pearl, notably the languid ballads, fuzzed-out burners, and heavier songs that have defined the group’s unique doom laden folk-rock sound. Throughout Coming Out of the Fog, Heumann’s vocals take on a meditative quality, melodies unraveling effortlessly over Carey’s steady grooves. Syncopated rhythms come to the fore on “The Promise,” building tension, and leading to a climax of synth swells and chromatic guitar lines. Elsewhere, on “Oceans Don’t Sing,” guest musician Dave Hadley’s plaintive pedal-steel guitar lays a bed for some of Heumann’s most impassioned singing set to tape. Spending time on pre-production allowed for a more detailed approach to recording. Carey’s drums were tuned specifically for almost every track on the album, and tape was used to achieve the warmth only found in analog. When taken as a whole, the lyrical theme of an individual’s relationships and struggles with forces larger than one’s self emerges. In “The Long Night,” a protagonist is faced with a metaphysical blackness, a dark night of the soul. “Renouncer” was inspired by Colin Dickey’s book The Afterlives of the Saints. It references the story of Saint Simeon, who traveled into the Syrian Desert and lived perched on a column for 36 years, living a life of death in an attempt to become closer to God. Bolstered by Heumann’s naturalistic imagery, “Oceans Don’t Sing” reflects on humanity’s powerlessness in the face of time’s steady passing. An exception to much of the record’s darkness, the title track is calming and reassuring, carried by Pierce’s affecting, sparse piano lines. Coming Out of the Fog is a wellcrafted thing of beauty, an album that reveals itself more with every listen and whose lyrics take the listener out of themselves.

Douglas McCombs’s goal for his longstanding Brokeback project has always been to do service to those fleeting moments in life when everything seems clear and defined and beautiful and the hair stands up on the back of your neck. In the fall of 2010, when McCombs convened a new version of the band, Brokeback hadn’t played a live show for more than two years and had not recorded any new music for eight. McCombs’s idea was not to start over, exactly, but to start fresh, approaching similar harmonic content from a different direction, taking into consideration the perspectives of the three new guys, Pete Croke (Tight Phantomz, Head of Skulls!, Reds and Blue), Chris Hansen (Pinebender, Head of Skulls!), and James Elkington (the Zincs, the Horse’s Ha).

The idea was to make this new version of Brokeback as much like everyone’s first band as possible. They set up a once- or twice-weekly practice schedule, and for almost a year stuck to it as diligently as possible. Only in September 2011, when they felt confident that they had a decent set of material together, did they begin playing live shows.

Brokeback and the Black Rock features an entirely new Brokeback band assembled by McCombs and features members of Tight Phantomz, Pinebender and Head of Skulls! The new Brokeback practiced for over a year before performing live and then played out and toured for a six month period before recording the album at John McEntire’s (Tortoise) Soma Studio

The next step was crucial to the development of the songs that would end up on Brokeback and the Black Rock. The band resolved to spend about six months playing as many shows as they could, trying not to turn anything down, and even lucked into a ten-date tour opening for their friends The Sea and Cake. As everybody learns in their first band, playing new songs ten days in a row really locks everything down and makes it clear what’s working and what’s not. In April 2012 they spent two days tracking with recording engineer John McEntire, McCombs’s bandmate in Tortoise, at his Soma Electronic Music Studio. They did some overdubbing and tweaking at Elkington’s home studio, NADA, and in July went back to Soma for two days with McEntire to mix. Done. Brokeback and the Black Rock has the sound of a band playing. The arrangements were sweated over during the year and a half prior to recording, so the challenge was to capture convincing performances of the songs. McEntire has done a great job recording the band. The bass and drums sound natural and full. The guitars are clear and ringing with just the right growl. Oh, and this band likes reverb. There are moments that recall the more delicate and nuanced approach of earlier Brokeback recordings, but the real attraction is the increased dynamic range of a group of musicians who’ve been playing together for a while. There are moments of pure release that would not have been possible in other versions of Brokeback.

Brokeback is the longstanding project of Douglas McCombs. McCombs is a member of Tortoise, Eleventh Dream Day, and Pullman, and has worked with Tom Ze, Azita Youseffi, Will Oldham, Calexico and Yo La Tengo.

For Centralia, the duo of Koen Holtkamp and Brendon Anderegg wrote and recorded in a way that mirrors the pace of their music. While the current trend in experimental music is towards hyper-prolificity, Mountains have taken their time on Centralia, resulting in an album that is as precise as it is boundless. Holtkamp and Anderegg approached the album layer by layer, throughout much of the record combining purely-acoustic recordings with purely-electronic sounds rather than using electronics to manipulate acoustic source material. Guitar, cello, organs, electric piano, and more are seamlessly combined with modular electronics, synthesizers and other sound sources. The result is a fully engrossing listen, always shifting focus between acoustic instruments, processed instruments and electronic sound. Most of Centralia was recorded by Holtkamp and Anderegg at Telescope Recording in Brooklyn, with the exception of the side-long “Propeller” and “Liana,” which are recordings of live shows later augmented with additional instrumentation. The duo recorded, edited, and mixed everything themselves, creating a sonic and aesthetic continuity only achievable through such fastidious and insular methods. Be it the gently melodic acoustic guitar and keyboard of “Tilt” or the steady, subtle pulsating haze of “Living Lens,” the album is as sonically rich as it is compositionally diverse. Centralia is the most fully realized Mountains album, it encompasses everything Mountains represents, from the analog electronic sound of Air Museum, to the gentle warmth and improvised grandeur of Choral. Mountains are utterly singular in their ability to combine such varied and complex sources into such delicately detailed songs of perceived simple pastoral ambience.

Orilla Oscura is the new album from Barn Owl’s Jon Porras. Having previously released solo work under his Elm moniker, this is the third album released under his birth name and the second album of 2012 (following Black Mesa released by Thrill Jockey). Orilla Oscura was performed and recorded in 2010 by Porras in San Francisco at his home studio, The Alcove. The album’s eight tracks focus on devotional solo guitar accompanied by manipulated tapes. Post-production was kept to a minimum so the tones, textures and colors could remain as they appeared. The album plays at 45 RPM for optimal sound quality and was mastered by Andreas [LUPO] Lubich at D&M in Berlin. Orilla Oscura appears less Americana influenced than previous works and focuses more on despondent melodies and textures derived from cassette abstractions. At the time of recording, Porras was inspired by a book on the San Francisco Tape Music Center and wanted to incorporate cassettes as a foundation for the album’s eight tracks. Slowing down and manipulating the tape with analog effects, Porras would improvise and write parts to compliment the abstractions. His goal was to revive and reinvigorate these taped sounds like ghosts or resonances from the past; interacting and engaging with these reawakened tones. The Dark Shore suggests the meeting of two domains; past and present, land and sea, dark and light. Orilla Oscura is a record of phantom architectures and a contribution to a vision of California Gothic.

In 2006 after the success of They’ve Got Blood Like We’ve Got Blood, White Hills main man Dave W. decided to put together a full band instead of continuing White Hills as just a recording project. Trying out many different line-ups and configurations the trio of Dave W., Ego Sensation, and Bob Bellomo finally came together and would become the core White Hills band for nearly a two year period. It is with this core trio that the band made their classic early albums Heads on Fire, Glitter Glamour Atrocity, as well as Abstractions & Mutations. Abstractions & Mutations was originally released in 2007 as a tour only CD-r for a UK tour White Hills did with Spiritualized guitarist Tony “Døggen” Foster’s solo band DØGNTANK (which also featured long time White Hills collaborator Antrønhy ØH on drums). The album contains both studio and rehearsal recordings from the very inception of this full band version of White Hills. Most tracks were recorded in one take and no overdubs were used. Stand out tracks “Eye to Eye” and “Left Behind” were recorded in just one day. The entirety of it was recorded, mixed and produced by Dave W. in New Jersey and New York City (except for “Eye to Eye” and “Left Behind” which were recorded by Bob Bellomo and mixed by Dave W.) Immune could not be more excited to present Abstractions & Mutations on vinyl for the first time. The CD-r edition has been repressed a number of times but is long sold out and this material has been criminally unavailable. Welcome if you will, to the coming of age of Falty DL, AKA Drew Lustman. A producer who's already carved out a name as one of the most exciting talents to emerge in electronic music of late, he's released albums on Planet Mu, supported Radiohead (and topped Thom Yorke's office playlist,) as well as remixed the XX, Scuba and Mount Kimbie - to name but a few. He also has his own label, Blueberry Records, in collaboration with which Ninja Tune presents 'Hardcourage.' 'Hardcourage' is the NYC-based Lustman's masterpiece: an electronic opus inspired by love, and crafted with renewed intent and dedication in so being. Lustman often makes mention of attempting to channel the music in his head, to allow it to pour forth direct from his subconscious. In 'Hardcourage' it seems he's succeeded. The music here feels incredibly natural, the songs taking the most perfect of shapes, their emotive rise and swell both subtle and immensely powerful. Halfway through making the album, Lustman fell in love - the object of his affections rapidly becoming his muse. He's been very lucky in more ways than one: 'Hardcourage' is full of uplift, energy and purpose - it genuinely feels like all the best parts of falling in love. The album's opener 'Stay, I'm Changed' is much more than just a track that happens to come first; it genuinely opens the album, setting the tone and enticing the listener in to the self-contained world within. From its initially tentative, horn-like synths, it gradually grows in urgency, drama and emotional depth. Second single 'She Sleeps' is the only vocal track on the album, featuring a brilliant, haunting turn from The Friendly Fires' Ed Macfarlane. The pair bonded over a shared love for garage music, (ironically, garage being the sound Falty has moved away from on the album.) The collaboration feels instinctive and inspired, two minds meeting to make a song with a purity and vulnerability not often found in electronic music. ‘Finally Some Shit/ The Rain Stopped’ feels like the blues lifting. Its pattering drums bring to mind rain against a windowpane, the driving bassline is like renewed resolve captured in music. ‘Hardcourage’ is about ‘when things are in Limbo and having the courage to carry on,’ says Lustman, and nowhere is that more in evidence than here. The album’s first single ‘Straight and Arrow’ summarises the musical direction Lustman has taken with ‘Hardcourage.’ His move away from a US take on garage has resulted in a masterful brand of atmospheric, soul-drenched house and electronica. As you'd expect, Falty has applied as much vision to the album's close as he has its beginning. 'Bells' has a strong claim to be electronica's greatest love song. Like the clouds parting, the heart leaping, the world seeming to chime with happiness, it's the perfect end to the perfect declaration of love. ‘I didn't make this album with the intent of sharing all of it,’ Lustman has said. That’s obviously served him well. Luckily for us, share it he has.

This year has seen Kwes transition from a behind the scenes producer to an awe-inspiring musician in his own right. The Meantime EP, released in May, showcased his ability to craft irresistible experimental pop with innocent, yet soul-bearing lyrics. SPIN Magazine said of the release, it was a “velveteen blend of handcrafted, ultraearnest electronica.” He performed this spring in the US at SXSW and in NYC with his band, and more recently toured with Bobby Womack, which included a performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Kwes’ latest song “Rollerblades” is available on 7” this January 22 with b-side “Rosab”, limited 1000 copies worldwide. The Parson Redheads. Yearling. ometimes a great album slips through the cracks. Critics and astute music fans might find it, fellow musicians might rave about it and tell their friends, but the album has what you might call a slow burn. Such is the case with The Parson Redheads’ album “Yearling.” With a new record in the works produced by legendary musician/ producer and all-around character Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellow, Minus 5, Baseball Project, R.E.M.) set for a 2013 release, The Parson Redheads will first release a deluxe version of “Yearling” on January 22, 2012 that will feature six bonus tracks and new liner notes. Released on the Arena Rock Records label in 2011 and now out of print, Yearling’s four-part harmonies, quietly compelling songs and wistful, Laurel Canyon-circa -71 sound are a find. Yearling has a timeless quality that continues and expands the classic popcountry-rock lineage stretching from The Byrds and Fleetwood Mac to the Jayhawks and Wilco. Songwriter/de facto bandleader Evan Way hears these reference points, but says the band feels a stronger musical kinship with their contemporaries such as Blitzen Trapper, Fleet Foxes, Dawes and The Fruit Bats. The 11-track original album was produced by sometimes-band-mate Raymond Richards at Red Rockets Glare (Los Angeles CA) and by Chris Stamey, of legendary Southern jangle-pop band, The dB’s, at Mitch Easter’s Fidelitorium Studios (Kernersville, NC); and mixed by Stamey at Modern Recording (Chapel Hill, NC). The additional 6 tracks were also recorded by the band prior to joining up with Stamey and were an unreleased collection the band called the “Murmurations EP” and available here for the first time. The band will be touring the US in early 2013 in support of “Yearling” and appearing at again at SXSW, where last year, at the Blurt Magazine/Dog Fish Head Day Party they received a standing ovation from the capacity crowd prior to an all-star set from legends such as: The dBs, Chuck Prophet, Peter Case & Paul Collins, Tommy Stinson, and a reunion of the surviving members of Big Star. The band also contributed the standout track “Don’t Lose Your Grip On Love” to the Nick Lowe Tribute “Love Country” released in late 2012, along with other artists such as Caitlin Rose, Jeff The Brotherhood, Chatham County Line & Ron Sexsmith.

He has played gigs in libraries, observatories and remote Hebridean Islands. In all that time, however, Hayman’s real focus has been on this, a 20song, double LP chronicling the 17th century Essex Witch Trials during the English Civil Wars. The record constitutes the third part of Darren’s Essex trilogy, the previous two albums, Pram Town and Essex Arms, dealing with the new towns and suburbs and the lawless countryside. “I have been drawn to my birthplace because it is both familiar and alien to me,” says Hayman. “Essex is so close to London yet so remote from it in many ways. I want to be both brutal and tender about the place in my songs.” “It’s easy to become trapped by your own tropes. I write easily about modernity and pepper my lyrics with slang, brand names and colloquialisms. I wanted to write about something in Essex’s past that spoke of its strangeness and also forced me to write in a language suitable for another period.” Between 1644 and 1646, approximately 300 women were executed for witchcraft in the eastern counties of Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk. Matthew Hopkins was the self appointed Witch Finder General who travelled East Anglia and helped small communities to rid themselves of these lonely, widowed women. The album deals with fear and isolation, the way we use our own terror in times of trouble to lash out at the weak, and how societies persecute otherness and outsiders. The album also concerns itself with the wider context of the English Civil Wars. Hayman sings about King Charles I’s doomed love for his French bride; Parliamentarian spies; Puritan ideals and the comfort of animals. The album is epic in both concept and sound. The landscape of the Dedham Vale is bought alive by beautiful intricate woodwind scores, trembling strings and destroyed church organs. The Violence is an outstanding creative achievement, a truly unique and unprecedented album. “It’s about how violence frightens us and how fear just leads to greater violence,” says Hayman.
