Peggy Sue
Choir Of Echoes
NATIONAL release date CD/LP: 01.28.2013 London-based indie rock band Peggy Sue is gearing up for the release of their third full-length album, Choir of Echoes. Featuring 13 new tracks, the album was recorded at the legendary Rockfield Studios in Wales. Since the release of their sophomore album, Acrobats, the band has garnered praise from the likes of Rolling Stone and NME and has toured with Local Natives, First Aid Kit, and Jack White. They also released Peggy Sue Play the Songs of Scorpio Rising, which was their rendition of the soundtrack to the 1963 cult classic directed by Kenneth Anger.
“Folky modal tunes, insistent drones and lyrics with biblical and allegorical overtones…they were tales of love, death and transformation, invoking tradition but bristling in the here and now.” -The New York Times “Peggy Sue’s bluesy, soulful brood bounds easily from quirky to profoundly heartfelt, often over the course of a single song.”-NPR “World Café” “There’s a palpable sense of menace — horror movie strings twist around steel-straight guitars, and Young’s vocal harmonies with Rosa Rex float like witch’s incantations.” -Rolling Stone Highlights: • First Single Idle premiered on The Guardian, with coverage at MXDWN, Music Savage, Bowlegs and Thank Folk For That • 3 Week US Tour kicks off January 29th, 2014 • National Press handled by Sacks And Co. The Autumn Defense Fifth
NATIONAL release date cd/LP: 01.28.2014 Everyone has a different way to relax after a hard day of work, and for Pat Sansone and John Stirratt, the best way to clear their heads after playing to thousands of people for weeks on end was to find time to craft Fifth, the latest immaculately rendered pop opus from their long-running duo The Autumn Defense. Recorded on the fly between Wilco tours, multi-instrumentalists and producers Sansone and Stirratt recruited members of their touring band for the first time in the making of an Autumn Defense record. Confident grooves underly the duo's masses of harmonies and carefully layered guitar chimes for what the pair consider one of their most varied efforts to date. From their native Chicago, the pair talked about finding time to make the album, balancing production and songwriting, and working with their live band in the studio. Fifth is the first album that utilizes The Autumn Defense’s core live band. “I think there is a core sound that connects all the tracks,” Sansone said. “Maybe I just say that because I was there and I know how it was made, but my instinct is that it sounds like a particular group of people playing together.” The first single is “This Thing That I’ve Found.” The Autumn Defense plans on touring the US and the rest of the world in 2014. Highlights: • Sacks & Co. is publicist • Paste Magazine premiered the song “None of This Will Matter” in October ‘13 • Wilco will promote this release to fans making the connection of Pat Sansone and John Stirratt to both bands • The Autumn Defense will tour the world and the US extensively in 2014 • 180 gram vinyl 2xLP includes CD • First Single: “This Thing That I’ve Found” will be promoted at AAA, College, Commercial Specialty Track Listing: 01. Eleni Mandell Let’s Fly a Kite
NATIONAL release date CD/LP: 01.28.2014 LA songstress Eleni Mandell is gearing up for the release of her ninth fulllength album, Let’s Fly a Kite. Featuring 12 new songs, the album was recorded at Goldtop Studios in London and produced by Neil Brockbank, who also produces for Eleni’s fellow label mate, Nick Lowe, and Robert Trehern, who plays in Nick’s band. Since the release of her previous album, I Can See the Future, Eleni has toured with Nick Lowe, contributed a track to the Sweet Relief III: Pennies from Heaven compilation and was honored with a tribute concert this fall presented by KCRW.

The New Mendicants Into the Lime
Following the release of the Australia EP in the summer of 2013, the trio of Joe Pernice (Pernice Brothers), Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub) and Mike Belisky (The Sadies) delivers their debut long-player Into The Lime as The New Mendicants in January 2014. The New Mendicants got their start in Joe Pernice’s kitchen. In the wake of a recent relocation to Toronto, Norman Blake was re-introduced to his new neighbor Pernice through mutual acquaintance (and Pernice Brothers drummer) Patrick Berkery, who had met B l a ke d u r i n g a re c o rd i n g project in Norway. A friendship and musical partnership quickly formed. Says Pernice: “...he said we should start a band together

called The Mendicants. Well, I had literally one day earlier recorded a song called “The Mendicant” for the upcoming Scud Mountain Boys record. May God smite me if this is not the truth. I sent Norman the demo, and he wrote back: ‘It’s f ate’.... Within minutes of hanging out in my kitchen we were booking recording dates.” The pair made their live debut with low-key public performances in a Toronto tavern, marked by plenty of wisecracking banter, opentunings and sublime pop smarts -- the latter of which are, along with long-established songwriting chops, on full display in their debut release. Featur ing 9 or iginal nuggets of effervescent Holliesstyle guitar pop laced with Simon and Garfunkel-esque vocal interplay, and a version of Sandy Denny’s “By The Time It Gets Dark,” Into the Lime is served up with a side of lyrical humour and a delicious sprinkle of darkness.

")' "!.$ -).) *!:: 47/5"!$/5 3/5.$3 Strut presents HAITI DIRECT, the first in-depth exploration of the vibrant and varied colours of Haiti’s music from the early ‘60s to the late ‘70s. HAITI DIRECT celebrates the overlooked musical legacy of Haiti, going beyond Ra-ra and voodoo stereotypes to trace the development of a unique sound that echoed across the Caribbean. At the dawn of the '60s, as Jamaica twisted American R’n’B into ska and reggae and musicians from Cuba and Puerto Rico codified the sound of Salsa, Haiti gave birth to Compas Direct. an updating of the traditional Meringue rhythm, adapted with a new swing and complex arrangements. The driving sound and irresistible beat of Compas swiftly dominated the French-speaking Caribbean as well as taking root in the urban centres of New York, Paris, Montreal and Miami. As the decade waned, the big band orchestras of Compas-originator Nemours JeanBaptiste and musical rival Webert Sicot gave way to new, smaller groups like Shleu Shleu and Les Frères Déjean. Raw electric guitars, wailing sax lines and driving percussion combined as the groups blended local rhythms with rock and jazz influences, producing a raucous, punchy and densely textured sound that paved the way for the next decade. Into the ‘70s, the Mini-jazz sound had become a major force across the Caribbean and into mainland Europe and South America. Tabou Combo filled New York’s Central Park for a Summer concert and topped the charts in France, bringing the sound of Compas to a new and wider audience. They would eventually form one of the cornerstones of the Zouk wave in the '80s. Compiled by Hugo Mendez, co-founder of the excellent Sofrito label and sound system, HAITI DIRECT features classic material from the early days of groups such as Tabou Combo and Les Freres Déjean as well as rarities from lesser known groups - bringing together the sound of Compas with Latin workouts, psychedelic experiments and the Cuban influenced Twoubadou singers that continued to be a key part of the fabric of Haitian musical life. Featuring in-depth liner notes and interviews with some of the musicians and producers that shaped the sound, HAITI DIRECT is the first widely available compilation to celebrate the unique and innovative sounds of Haiti in the ‘60s and ‘70s.

NO EXPORT TO EUROPE, CANADA, AUSTRALIA “For all of their affinity for murky, sludgy sounds, Pontiak roars away with remarkable precision, pulling off that men-as-machine ethos quite convincingly. Maybe it’s a sibling thing?” – San Francisco Bay Guardian Pontiak is three brothers that grew up and live on farms inVirginia. Their lifelong closeness yields uncommon musical understanding, creative collaboration and personal camaraderie. Their singular combination of impressive work ethic and boundless creativity pays off on their new album INNOCENCE. From the explosive title track to the mellow groove of “Wildfires,” these 11 songs are some of the most absorbing and melodic material the band has produced, without ever losing their signature heft. It was recorded in the band’s Studio A in Virginia without the aid of computers. When the band began to compose the songs that became INNOCENCE, instead of employing their well-worn method of carving out melodic passages from the squall of feedback and fuzz, the Carney brothers’ songs frequently began the process with a trio of vocals, often eschewing instruments altogether as they wrote. Nowhere is this more apparent than the melancholic ballads of “Wildfires” and “Darkness is Coming”. On high energy, hook laden tracks such as “Lack Lustre Rush,” “Surrounded by Diamonds,” and “Ghosts,” the distortion and the searing yet elegant guitar lines hang on the brothers vocal melodies. In addition to designing their own album artwork, the band films, edits, and directs all their music videos, including the 18-minute short film entitled Heat Leisure, which the band released in 2013. The film juxtaposed the staid, oft silent beauty of historic Virginia farms, many of which were the location of civil war battles, with the live bombastic beauty of a rock show. The performance featured two new songs made in collaboration with several guest musicians, including labelmate Greg Fox of Guardian Alien. The film premiered as an official selection at the Chicago International Music and Movies Festival. GENRE : ROCK FILE UNDER: “G” Guardian Alien RELEASE DATE : January 28, 2014
NO EXPORT TO EUROPE, CANADA, AUSTRALIA Guardian Alien, led by the unparalleled drumming of Greg Fox, is an integral part of a new wave of New York avant-garde musicians. Taking inspiration from those that came before, such as Milford Graves (with whom Fox has studied), and the great minimalist composer Rhys Chatham, Guardian Alien rejects previously established forms while selectively contorting elements of many into a wholly unique and personal new order. Striking a unique balance between sounds produced acoustically and electronically, its latest work, Spiritual Emergency, shows the group harnessing instability and cosmic fluctuations, pushing its sound in multiple directions simultaneously to create a pivotal moment in the postmodern New York underground. Greg Fox is joined on this recording by Alexandra Drewchin (vocals/ electronics), Bernard Gann (guitar), Turner Williams (shahai baaja) and Eli Winograd (bass). Spiritual Emergency was recorded by legendary engineer and producer Wharton Tiers (Sonic Youth, Glenn Branca). Wharton mixed the album live, riding the faders as he imparted his distinctive sonic presence. The album’s first side consists of a series of radically different improvised vignettes, beginning with the hushed, intricate tabla rhythms and cut-up vocals of “Tranquilizer” before launching into the brief, ecstatic bursts of “Mirror” and the robotic syncopation of “Vapor,” finally peaking with the fuzzed-out wall of drone that is “Mirage.” The sidelong titular composition that resides on the flip begins with a recording of Stanislav Grof reading from his book from which the album takes its name, literature that informs the structure and nature of the music to come. When Fox’s polyrhythmic pounding and Drewchin’s bubbling electrics enter, the piece quickly escalates and never sits still, the quintet reveling in the metaphysical revelation that results in the ensuing 20 minutes of reflective frenzy. The piece, which was honed on the road for over a year before being laid to tape, is the most definitive statement of intent the band has released and is a harbinger of the wildly eclectic things to come. Shortly following the recording of Spiritual Emergency, Williams and Winograd left New York to pursue other opportunities, cementing Guardian Alien as the current trio of Fox, Gann, and Drewchin. Fox, who also currently plays as a member of Zs, has continued to collaborate with a remarkable array of musicians, including Ben Frost, Colin Stetson, Dustin Wong, and Kid Millions.

‘Dinghy’ is an old track I recorded with Richard Roberts (now one half of Letherette) around 2006. We used to work in an old Victorian pub back in those times, and it was a regular thing that we'd stay behind for a lock-in after hours. Around that time we recorded a lot of stuff together, some in the pub, some in the garden, some by a stream in the woods, some at home. This track was recorded in one take, straight to cassette. It was a time where we played together so much that our sense of rhythm was totally locked, in this track we seemed to respond to each other's timing really naturally. ‘The Spinney View of Hinkley Point.’ is the first track I've released with live drums, as opposed to sampled and chopped on an MPC. I recorded the drums, guitar and bass parts in my friend's shed in rural Somerset ‘Carbon Wulf’ is of course a reprise of the album track 'Wulf'. This was just a straight, one-take improvisation on baritone guitar and a reverb pedal. I crushed the hell out of it with an analogue limiter which gave it this uneven fire-damaged sound.

The other tracks were written some years ago, I rediscovered them while going through my archives and, again, heard them with fresh ears. I decided to revamp them, re-recording the vocal parts and adding more instruments.

After her much lauded debut ‘Playin’ Me’ last year, Cooly G returns with an EP that switches from songwriting mode to create extended, spaced out and rhythmic house tracks built for the dancefloor. ‘Hold Me’ starts with minor note stabs and Cooly's vocal refrain “Hold me” over a punchy bassline. The rhythm slowly builds as the vocal becomes more dubbed out and the atmosphere more smokey. ‘Oi Dirty’, made with DVA, is a piece of wonky, rhythmically lopsided house with a cavernous elasticized bassline and lots of micro detail destabilising the track then bringing it back, pitching drums and mini breakdowns. ‘Molly‘ is a slow burning 4/4 house track built around a static grid that gradually builds up, getting stiffer and more intense, with wobbly acid-like synth lines and hissing static stabs, underpinned by a one note bass kick. It’s a masterclass in creating tension with sleight of hand production moves.

Aa (Big A little a) VoyAager With “VoyAager,” Aa (“Big A little a”) - one of the quintessential house bands of Brooklyn’s mid-aughts loft party/DIY scene - have returned with their first US release since 2007. The heady new album, out on Northern Spy Records, expands dramatically on the band’s primordial polyrhythms + noise palette to embrace lush electronic psychedelia, enveloping vocal textures, and even unexpected, glittering explosions of pop melodicism. The thunderous orchestra of live drums that has always been Aa’s hallmark is still very much foregrounded, but frequently hybridized with digital beats and concussive blasts of electronic percussion.
“The official dance band for the postapocalypse. Meet you at the riot.” Christopher Weingarten, Senior Editor, Spin
While clearly in dialogue with contemporaries like Black Dice, Gang Gang Dance, Parts & Labor/Dan Friel, HEALTH, Dan Deacon, and others, Aa’s continuing evolution has mapped out an utterly singular course. “VoyAager” takes listeners on a journey across diversely unique sonic worlds – from the ecstatic drum workouts of “Glow Wreath” and “Fish Phone,” to the menacing, post-industrial grind of “Mossy” and “Gowntower,” to the transcendently odd electropop of “Koosh” and “Eyebells,” and other strange, previously uncharted territories.
“Not just noise, not just drums, but something that reaches ecstatic, bombastic heights” - Pitchfork
Painstakingly produced by the band with long-time collaborator Billy Pavone and mastered by drummer Josh Bonati of Bonati Mastering, “VoyAager” works both as deep headphone listening and as blisteringly loud, heavy-in-the-red avant-rock. Recorded over several years in Brooklyn, New Jersey, Los Angeles, and southern France, and following tours of Europe, Australia and New Zealand, the album serves as evidence that Aa never went away – and that the band has created its own, vibrantly fecund lane that will continue generating distinctive new mutant strains of contemporary music for years to come. Tracklisting: 1. Promsac 2. Drug Mom 3. Mossy 4. Pug Pit

Smith’s music can be summed up as a struggle to contain a series of opposites : light and darkness, sorrow and joy, despair and hope. On his new double album Ending/Returning both ends of the spectrum have been distilled down to their core as Smith has recorded the same set of songs first as Steven R. Smith and then as Ulaan Khol. Ending is a quiet, minimal record as Steven R. Smith while Returning is a blown-out, maximal record as Ulaan Khol. Ending/Returning was recorded in Smith’s Worstward Studios on all analog equipment and is one of the last albums he recorded entirely in analog as his 8-track reel-to-reel tape deck broke down at the end of these sessions. The piano featured on Ending (which is rarely heard in Smith’s work) was recorded at a rehearsal space in Pasadena. Ending/Returning follows Smith’s album Cities released by Immune in 2009. Smith has also recently released recordings on Soft Abuse, Brave Mysteries, Burnt Toast Vinyl, and his own Worstward Recordings label.

BREAKING THE CHAINS
Produced by both British studio wizard Neil Kernon (Queensryche, Kansas, Autograph) and Michael Wagener (Mötley Crüe, Extreme) the album, originally released in 1985, is generally regarded as one of their best creations, giving rise to a number of classic tracks, including ‘The Hunter’, ‘Unchain The Night’, ‘It’s Not Love’ and the chart hit ‘In My Dreams’. It was a record that promoted them to an Agrade platinum attraction and one that resulted in the sort of kerb appeal shared by the likes of the Scorpions, Ratt and White Lion.
Dokken, the Los Angeles based band featuring frontman Don Dokken and exceptional guitarist George Lynch; two men who, no matter how hard they tried, just couldn’t see eye to eye yet managed to craft some of the most crucial hard rock of the 1980s.
Their debut album was recorded at Dierks Studio in Cologne, utilising up and coming German born producer Michael Wagener.
Originally issued in 1984, ‘Tooth And Nail’ leapt out of the starting blocks with all guns blazing, confounding the critics and captivating their audience with an array of classy hard rock, big on hooks and full of energy.
Issued in 1981, ‘Breaking The Chains’ sold well in Europe, paving the way for Elektra Records to release this superior, revised and remixed version in North America two years later. Attracting instant acclaim the album features several Dokken classics, including ‘I Can’t See You’, ‘In The Middle’, ‘Seven Thunders’ and the full throttle title track itself.

Primary Kansas songwriter and guitarist Kerry Livgren’s first solo album ‘Seeds Of Change’ is a long forgotten jewel. Featuring guest appearances from most of his Kansas colleagues, as well as cameo’s from the likes of Ronnie James Dio, Jethro Tull drummer Barrie Barlow and Ambrosia frontman David Pack; it not only showcased the guitarist’s versatility as a songwriter, but also allowed him to push the envelope like never before.
WHICHEVER WAY you shake a stick at it, the lone album from studio creation Speedway Blvd is arguably one of the greatest hard rock albums that has ever been released. In a fair world this record would have gone on to sell several million copies propelling the band to international fame and fortune. The focus was on lean and mean hard rock, with strong melodies and the killer voice of vocalist Roy Herring Jr. Originally issued in 1980, because the album bombed it received little exposure and even less publicity.
AMBITION
Tommy Shaw will always be synonymous with Styx. ‘Ambition’ was Tommy’s third solo album and is generally regarded as the best of the batch Originally released in 1987. Featuring some incredible vocal performances, the record is a startling example of heavy but melodic rock with lashings of power and passion. Songs such as ‘Dangerous Game’, ‘Are You Ready For Me’ and ‘The Outsider’ say so much more about Shaw than we ever learnt when he was a member of Styx No Such Thing; Dangerous Game; The Weight Of The World; Ambition; Ever Since The World Began; Are You Ready For Me; Somewhere In The Night; Love You Too Much; The Outsider; Lay Them Down

To Live Alone... follows his well-received 2009 album Notes To An Absent Lover, praised by Mojo Magazine as “Americana Album of The Month”. Whilst still embracing a relatively minimalist aesthetic, the songs alternate between up and down-tempo, with arrangements that envelope the listener like the warm glow of fading daylight. “All the While”, one of the highlights of the album, is at once both elegiac and hopeful, with its bright guitar and brisk tempo underpinned by mournful strings and Barzin’s soft, melancholy vocals. HELEN & THE HORNS - FOOTSTEPS AT MY DOOR DAMAGED GOODS JEWEL CD DAMGOOD419CD / 5020422041929 $20.99 After The Chefs split in the early 1980s, Helen McCookerybook (former bass player and vocalist) retired briefly from playing. She was introduced to Lester Square, who had just left The Monochrome Set, and they started working on her new songs, which were Westerninspired. Rehearsals with a full band proved too expensive and Helen resorted to rehearsing on guitar, with the sax and trombone players from the new band. John Peel’s producer phoned to ask what Helen was up to, and their first Peel session ensued. They went on to tour the UK and Holland, recording two more Peel sessions and playing every type of gig. 1 Pioneer Town 2 Footsteps At My Door 3 Snakebite 4 Freight Train 5 Secret Love 6 Twice Brewed 7 I'd Been Hoping For A Happy Ending 8 Southern Belle 9 Lonesome Country Boy 10 Two Strings For Your Bow 11 Girl Versus Boy 12 Take Five 13 Two Strings To Your Bow 14 Snakebite 15 Southern Belle 16 Pioneer Town 17 Freight Train 18 Lonesome Country Boy 19 Girl Versus Boy 20 My Black Rose 21 Oh Boy 22 Northbound Train

STREET DATE: 1/28/14 All Is Lost Original Motion Picture Soundtrack features ten original compelling, poignant compositions and one new song written, composed and produced by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros’ Alexander Ebert. This new body of work is the first solo work since Ebert released his heralded solo album Alexander in March 2011 which sold over 37,000 albums and 66,000 downloads. Starring Academy Award® winner Robert Redford, All Is Lost is an open-‐water thriller about one man’s battle for survival against the elements after his sailboat is destroyed at sea. Written and directed by Academy Award nominee J.C. Chandor (Margin Call) film is a gripping, visceral and powerfully moving tribute to ingenuity and resilience. The film premiered to great accolades at the 2013 Cannes International Film Festival. The film will be released in the United States on Friday, October 18, 2013. TRACK LISTING: 01. Excelsior 02. London one-man synth geek Matt Thompson (Zoltan, Guapo) takes you on a sci-fi tune-fest ala John Carpenter meets Kraftwerk. Thompson plays Mellotron, MiniMoog, Moog Taurus, SCI Prophet 5, SCI Pro One, Roland Jupiter 8, Roland Juno 6, Solina String Ensemble and ARP Odyssey to send you on a 9 track journey off of Earth, into an analogue worm-hole, onto a planetary ring of sound loops and then into the next dimension of sonic discovery. Each track is named after a spaceship from sci-fi pulps - we won't tell you which ones in case you really wanna go and find out… RIYL: John Carpenter, Death Waltz Records, Kraftwerk.
