SING THE DELTA
IRIS DEMENT’S FIRST ALBUM OF ORIGINAL SONGS IN 16 YEARS SING THE DELTA OUT OCT 2nd Considered “one of the finest artists of her generation” (All Music), Iris DeMent has returned with her first album of original music in 16 years, Sing The Delta, out October 2 on her own Flariella label. The album brings the delta to life through timeless songs, DeMent’s richly evocative voice and support from a cast of first-call musicians including Al Perkins, Reese Wynans, and album co-producers Bo Ramsey and Richard Bennett. Sing The Delta is uplifting and heartbreaking, ripe with twang and soul. Dixie horns, weeping slide guitar balladry and bright, Gospel-tinged piano swirl as Iris contemplates religion, love and family with introspection and imagery that few singer-songwriters can convey. Iris’ voice soars over a bluesy crawl on “The Kingdom Has Already Come” while “The Night I Learned How Not To Pray” is a vivid story about the tragic death of a young boy and subsequent religious reckoning. Overview “A unique kind of energy - familiar enough to nod your head but warped enough to feel like something special.” – Pitchfork “Until the Quiet Comes eschews the free-jazz astral planes and furious pacing of Cosmogramma for something more crepuscular, immediate, and song-oriented.” – SPIN
Format: CD Boxlot: 30 Price: $14.99 Packaging: CD in 8 panel digipack
Composed, according to FlyLo, as “a collage of mystical states, dreams, sleep and lullabies”, Until the Quiet Comes has the distinct feel of this nocturnal trip. From the twitching descent into a subconscious state and the out-of-focus time-ether of the journey that follows, the sound is an unhinged, yet elegant evolution of the melodic and rhythmic interplay that is woven into the DNA of Flying Lotus’ aural personae. The album, featuring guests Erykah Badu, Laura Darlington, Niki Randa, Thundercat & Thom Yorke, is set for release on October 2. UTQC is fueled by FlyLo’s first ever full US Tour, multiple videos, creative visual assets and massive suppport from his ever-growing group of press and fans. Notable followers include Odd Future (Earl Sweatshirt collaboration with Adult Swim online now), Schoolboy Q (who’s been in the studio) and rising QuickTime™ and a Casino. super-producer Clams

TIM MAIA
WORLD PSYCHEDELIC CLASSICS 4: NOBODY CAN LIVE FOREVER: THE EXISTENTIAL SOUL OF TIM MAIA Tim Maia was the man. A soul superstar with outsize talents and appetites, he revolutionized popular music in his native Brazil in the 1970s. He also married five times, served multiple prison sentences, and at the height of his fame, joined a UFO-obsessed religious cult. After ten years of wrangling, Luaka Bop is set to release 'Nobody Can Live Forever: The Existential Soul of Tim Maia' a fifteen track survey of Maia’s 1970s recordings, completely remastered, commemorating what would have been the Brazilian musical legend's 70th birthday on September 28. The release is the fourth in the label's World Psychedelic Classics series, known for unearthing long neglected masterworks by Os Mutantes, Shuggie Otis, and one of the first compilations of African psychedelia and funk.
MARKETING HIGHLIGHTS: • 'Que Beleza' single featured on NPR and in Rolling Stone on 7/7 • Album review confirmed in NY Times, LA Times, Washington Post, Spin, Wax Poetics, Blurt, All Music Guide • Parties celebrating Tim Maia 70th birthday planned at record stores across the US and Europe on Sep 28. More details and info to come. • Publicity by Shorefire. Radio promo by Distiller Promo • Close collaboration and outreach to the Brazilian music community and network in America • Free "Tim Maia LSD pills" to be distributed in corporate offices and street corners throughout NYC on day of release (Oct 2) • Limited edition merchandise available on luakabop.com • Album newly re-mastered • Posters available upon request
Tim Maia’s story is the stuff of legend, and indeed he is the subject of a bestselling biography, TV movie, and hit musical in Brazil. Growing up in Rio, he formed his first band at age 14 and taught local gang members to play guitar. In 1959, aged 17, he illegally emigrated to Tarrytown, NY where he studied communications, worked as a janitor, and formed a new band, The Ideals. Four years later he was jailed and deported for smoking marijuana in a stolen car. He returned to Brazil deeply inspired by American soul music and the civil rights movement and began writing songs in earnest. Amon Tobin marches to no one’s beat but his own. In a career spanning over ten years he has been connected to but never belonged to a host of scenes and styles. He has consistently made the music he feels he needs to make, not what other people think he ought to make, always exhibiting a level of attention to sonic detail which makes his music more intensely textured, beautiful and brutal than almost anyone’s out there. Make no mistake – “Stunt Rhythms” is about beats and bass. The model for the album comes from “Fools Rhythm” (included here), one of the standout tracks from Ninja’s 20th anniversary “XX” boxset, an infectious mixture of playground melody, sharp beat and thunderous bass. Although Amon’s love of the lower reaches of low end will undoubtedly cause people to reach for lazy comparisons with dubstep, “Stunt Rhythms” is in fact more accurately viewed as his love letter to hip hop – less the rampant consumerism of, say, G-Unit’s “Stunt 101” than the early culture of innovation and freshness, of showing off simply that you’re better at what you do than anyone else. So while tracks like “Snap” could be said to literally break down classic hip hop to its constituent components and put them back together in completely new shapes, the more uptempo tracks like “Razorback” come on like a whole new soundtrack for an as-yet-uninvented future pop-locking. If you imagine Mantronix as a Kenworth K100 truck, Two Fingers is what happens when the truck turns into Optimus Prime. Uncompromising, muscular and powerful, the music of Two Fingers is also full of subtle touches, humour and a supple sense of rhythm. Which, when you think about it, is just showing off. BLACK CURTAIN Descriptive Text
Known for their work in the dark recesses of heavy music via such vehicles as Khanate, ISIS and Blind Idiot God, it would have been easy enough for the trio of Aaron Turner, James Plotkin and Tim Wyskida to kick out something adequately dark and crushing with the formation of Jodis in 2007. Certainly outside expectations of what the group would sound like fell along those lines, but to the dismay of some and the delight of others, the final results were altogether more lush, melodic, and downright beautiful than anything previously imagined. The foundation for their debut album Secret House was laid around a careful synthesis of Plotkin and Wiskyda’s reductive, mercurial rhythmic interplay coupled with Turner’s knack for constructing monolithic sounds and dramatic ambience. Each note was deliberate. The gaps between notes were as important as the notes themselves. Tempos were made malleable. But a clear sense of structure and a dreamy, understated elegance threaded through the album’s seven tracks to produce an alluring, if somewhat bleak sonic landscape for the listener. After several years of steady concentrated work, Jodis have returned with their sophomore album, Black Curtain. Once again, the trio’s emphasis on sparseness and tension remains in full force, but is tempered by a greater focus on melody and slow blooming song structure. While its predecessor thrived on a kind of predatory patience, Black Curtain’s reserve is more of a salve than a threat. The album opens with “Broken Ground”, where spikes of reverbdrenched guitar sprawl across a humming electronic horizon, over which delicately draped vocal melodies twist, collide and dissolve. Drums occasionally rise from the ether, punctuating the meditative passages of pastoral calm. The band continues to explore the many outlets of their panoramic minimalism across the airy expanses of “Silent Temple", the shimmering melancholy of “Red Bough”, the hymn-like repetition of “Corridor”, and the mantric chants of “Awful Feast”. The more visceral and vitriolic elements of Jodis’s members’ past work are put on hold for the majority of Black Curtain. But the thunderous low-tuned throbs of guitar and strong-armed pounding of the drums rear their head in the closing track “Beggar’s Grasp”. Even in this rousing close to the album, the harmonious core is retained, and the listener is immersed in the depths of the sound around them, rather than mercilessly suffocated by it. Black Curtain is no doubt heavy - emotionally, even sonically - but its true strength lies in its graceful reserve and reverential worship of gray-skied beauty.
Featuring Members of ISIS, Khanate, Mamiffer, Blind Idiot God, OLD, Khlyst, and Old Man Gloom. Also Available From Jodis

idée fixe BRY WEBB PROVIDER Provider is the first album by Bry Webb as a solo artist, who until recently was best known as the principal singer and songwriter for legendary rock band Constantines. An album of mature narratives sung in Webb’s distinctive voice, Provider’s songs feel at once personal and universal, ranging from moving tributes to honest confessions highlighting an intimacy only hinted at in the past. Produced with Jeff McMurrich (Jennifer Castle, Owen Pallett, Sandro Perri) and accompanied by lap steel player Rich Burnett, pedal steel player Mike Brooks, and upright bassist Tyler Belluz, the bulk of the album was recorded entirely live off the floor. The results are organic, eerie and minimal and provide the perfect backdrop for Bry’s literate and detailed narratives. However, there are some departures from this approach: Undertaker is a gorgeous poetic rumination on life and death filled with stunning imagery perfectly set to a Colin Stetson (Bon Iver, Laurie Anderson) Tracks 1. horn arrangement, while Ex-Punks provides a sly nod to Bry’s past and hangs electric guitars atop a thumping bass heavy beat. The Artist It was in August of 2010 when the news of Constantines’ “indefinite hiatus” hit the international music press and with their 4 full length albums having left an indelible mark during the last decade ( Pitchfork including Shine A Light in their top 100 albums of the 2000’s and The Associated Press hailing 2008’s Kensington Heights as the Rock album of that year) the band’s dedicated worldwide fanbase began calling for a solo release from the group’s leader. After a short break, Bry hit the road playing the solo material that would later come to be Provider and during this time he accepted an invitation from old friend, Feist, to perform on her album Metals. Performing on two songs (most notably the single The Bad In Each Other as the song’s male lead) their chemistry is impossible to deny and inevitably led to Bry opening Feist’s national tour of Canada in the fall of 2011. Selling Points • First solo album from Bry Webb leader of Constantines, a band who released four internationally distributed records (three with Sub Pop and one with Arts and Crafts). The band played over 700 shows around the globe including Coachella and Sasquatch and gained a very loyal fan base in all major markets. • Bry appeared on Feist’s 2011 album Metals including vocals on single The Bad In Each Other and subsequently toured as support act for Feist as well as playing with her during her performance. • Both CD and LP packaging feature elaborate custom die-cut cover.

Andre Williams began a very prolific and creative phase of his life when he finally got off booze and drugs. His intake of various substances was excessive, unrelenting, and dated back to at least the 1960’s, when he was working extensively with Ike Turner. Reflecting on his very first drugand-alcohol-free studio session in 2009, Andre says, “It was traumatic. It was like someone shot me out in space and I woke up on Pluto!” Andre Williams’ new album “Life” was recorded this past winter in Detroit, the city where his musical career first began in the 1950’s. Andre’s new songs are his latest experiments and explorations outside of the garage-soul bag that he’s often associated with. Produced by Matthew Smith, the album’s sonic palette recalls the work of Norman Whitfield’s Motown productions, 70’s Rolling Stones, Can, Bill Withers, Serge Gainsbourg, as well as Andre’s own doo-wop and funk history. “Life” finds Andre in a pretty upbeat mood, whether he’s singing about people being rude and impatient (“But’n”), or laying down a political commentary (“Blame it on Obama”), reciting a children’s bedtime story (“Ty the Fly”), singing a simple love song (“Stuck in the Middle”, “It’s Only You That I Love”), or conjuring a nocturnal fetish-sexgroove (“Heels”). The album also includes his own definitive rocking version of the standard he wrote and produced for the Five Du-Tones in 1963, “Shake a Tail Feather”. It’s a reminder that Andre Williams is one of the original guys who invented rock n’ roll.

Rayna Gellert’s deep roots in American traditional music have informed her work with artists such as Robyn Hitchcock, Tyler Ramsey, Sara Watkins, and John Paul Jones, as well as her tenure as a member of the string-band Uncle Earl. On Old Light: Songs from my Childhood & Other Gone Worlds, she delves into new territory, applying her unique musical background to original songs and fresh arrangements of traditional songs. With beautiful accompaniment from guitarist Nathan Salsburg and other contributors (including Abigail Washburn, Kai Welch, Scott Miller, and Alice Gerrard), Rayna explores memory — its fragility and its power — with restraint and originality.

Michael Bram Suitcase in the hall
Michael “Leroy” Bram, currently on tour as the drummer with Grammy award-winner Jason Mraz, is also a singer, guitarist, harmonica player, songwriter, and more… a deeply diverse creative force. With this album, Suitcase in The Hall, Michael has joined forces with Dave Gross to create a production team with an original sound, and an album of classic and original Blues, Country and American Roots Music. “It’s hard to describe the level of creativity, ingenuity and excitement that Michael Bram breathes into every aspect of his art. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to work with him on this album. From the onset of preproduction, it was about the most painless, fun and educational experience I can remember having. Michael is a guy who just gets IT. We share the same taste in records, sounds, musicians and instruments, as well as all of the weird stuff that flies under the radar. For this reason, coming up with a concept for what we wanted the record to be was easy: textures, ambience and depth swimming around well crafted original and well chosen cover songs. Oh, and tremolo guitar… LOTS of tremolo guitar. I am incredibly honored to have been a part of this project, because it takes you through a wide range of the music we both deeply love, and does so with the sincerity and passion that Michael embodies. This album is full of something we are truly proud of, and hope that you enjoy listening to it as much as we did creating it.” — Dave Gross “Original arrangements and songwriting, a fresh take on raw Blues and classic Country, fine singing and playing, irony, honesty, clever production, warm clarity and open-hearted humanity -- and like a good story, I couldn’t guess what he’d do next.” — Bob Margolin • Currently on tour as drummer with Grammy-winner Jason Mraz. • Served as Mraz’s Musical Director for his critically acclaimed 2008/2009 world tour. • Recently recorded or performed with Willie Nelson, Joss Stone, John Popper, G.Love and Special Sauce, Watermelon Slim, etc. VIZZTONE LABEL GROUP WWW.VIZZTONE.COM CONTACT: Richard Rosenblatt richard@vizztone.com 617 250-0828

Doug Deming & the Jewel Tones What’s it Gonna Take
Eastside Detroit native Doug Deming, now hailing from Florida’s Gulf Coast, has garnered widespread attention for his deft guitar work and memorable songwriting. With a nod to the likes of T-Bone Walker and Charlie Christian, as well as Luther Tucker and Robert Jr. Lockwood, Doug leaves his own mark whether swingin’ on the big jazz box, or playing straight up blues on the solid body Fender guitar. While playing the local Detroit scene in the early ‘90s, major players began to take notice, and Doug spent much of the following years backing many of the days’ top touring blues artists, including Fabulous Thunderbirds frontman Kim Wilson, legendary Louisiana swamp bluesman Lazy Lester, Gary Primich, Chicago greats Johnny “Yard Dog” Jones, and A.C Reed, as well as Detroit’s own Queen of the Blues, Alberta Adams. With a decade of touring and recording to his credit, Doug has earned his position as a prominent figure in today’s blues scene. Leading his band, The Jewel Tones, Doug continues to bring noteworthy traditional and original roots music to his audiences.

Moon Moods contains ten tracks filled with wonder and electro pop enchantment. Having honed her pop dynamic to a gloriously melodic precision, Diva plucks inspiration from a myriad of different styles and genres of music. With post-punk churned up with doo-wop, R&B, hip hop, exotica, italo disco, psych and new age, the results are dizzyingly captivating. Having played in bands since she was 13, with the likes of blackblack and Pocahaunted, she has been working as a solo artist since 2010. Her live shows are a spectacular blend of music and performance art, with fabulous costume changes and mesmerising visuals. T he bulk of recording for Moon Moods was done by Diva herself, seeing her upping the stakes and graduating from her trusty 8-track on which she wrote the songs, to re-imagine them in the digital realm. This album sees Diva collaborating more, especially in the recording process, getting assistance from the likes of her Father, Bauhaus drummer Kevin Haskins, who worked with her on the production of the record. Vocals were one of the biggest challenges, pushing away from the safety net of effect-heavy takes to achieve a powerful clarity. For a few of the songs she enlisted the help of veteran producer and mixer Nick Page as well as the legendary John Fry (4AD, Mute, Nine Inch Nails). Guest musicians on the record include sax players Liz Armstrong and Zumi Rosow on Smooth Ride. Kevin Haskins plays auto harp on Tear Drops in the Purple Dimension and there’s also a secret special guest who played stand-up bass on Inverted Image. Moon Moods is thematically as varied as its musical inspirations, combining songs about heartache with tunes containing references to mysticism, magic and the occult. A few of the tracks follow Diva’s spiritual journey: coming to terms with uniting her life on earth with the otherworldly and supernatural, but with Smooth Ride she realises that we are all on our way to harmonizing the seemingly disparate into one paradise. Tracks : 1. Wanna Get To Know You 2. Cyborg Sweetie 3. Uncoiled 4. Inverted Image 5. Smooth Ride 6. Teardrops In The Purple Dimension 7. Feline Divine 8. Moon Moods 9. Lonely Drive 10. Formed in 2005, instrumental 4 piece Maybeshewill have been busy building a significant worldwide fan-base. Their first two albums received widespread critical acclaim including glowing reviews and coverage from NME, Kerrang, Rock Sound, Drowned In Sound and BBC Radio 1 in UK. The band achieved great success through a loyal and enthusiastic fan base built by constant touring and word of mouth. Initially focusing on the UK they have quickly discovered a huge demand for them in Europe and the rest of the world as word has spread virally through the internet. ‘I was here for a moment, then I was gone ‘ is the band’s third album and first for London UK label Function Records. Released in UK and Europe in 2011 the record will be their first US release when it comes out this coming September. The album is intended as the soundtrack to an as yet unimagined film; widescreen cinematic highs and haunting moments of quiet played off against intense, almost brutally pounding guitars. They've maintained an intense touring schedule that has seen them play sold out shows across the UK, Europe, Russia and Japan and more recently China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Following several festival appearances across UK and Europe the band will be touring Eastern Europe in September before a month long tour across the US in October. With glowing press for the new album and sold out shows across the UK, Europe, and Asia under their belt they've never been more confident in the year ahead. And so onto the US! "They’ve the potential to become a domestic instrumental act that truly matters" ― Drowned In Sound "Most bands couldn't juggle the collective noise of Mogwai and Glassjaw without exploding... These songs are extremely quick to kick your teeth in when you least expect it" ― Kerrang (KKKK) 17 Heathmans Road, London SW6 4TJ - Tel: 0207 731 5125 - Fax: 0207 731 3866 INFO@CARGORECORDS.CO.UK SALES@CARGORECORDS.CO.UK CARGORECORDS.CO.UK

For fans of: DANANANANAYKROYD, Los Campesinos, Fight Like Apes, Tellison, Cap’N Jazz. // “If you’re looking for a new logo to scribble on your English folder or a tune to hum while walking home alone after a night out, you’re in safe hands with Johnny Foreigner.' NME // “Some of the most exciting indie-pop sounds committed to record by a British band in a long while' Drowned in Sound // the dual male and female lead vocalists is as excitingly fresh a noise as this reviewer has heard all year.' RockSound // “The raucous bursts perfectly counteract the measured, intentional breaks, leaving us with a group closer to completing their own jigsaw” BBC Music // Johnny Foreigner released their third album proper, “Johhny Foreigner vs. Everything” through Alcopop! on November 7th and after six months worth of passionate battles, trials and tribulations it exceeded all expectations. Outselling their major label funded debut in the first week sales were tremendous, and JoFo have continued to play sold out shows around the country off the back of its reception. The fans have demanded it, and so Alcopop! Are re-releasing the record 7 months on, as a double 12” all lovely vinyl record. Lex (vocalists) says - “We also knew that we were making a huge sprawling album, and when it came to the point we had over 45 minutes worth of music, we merely shrugged, murmured - 2x12" - to each other, and carried on till it was finished. Luckily the adults around us agreed, and you're going to be able to hold it in your own hands this june. Um, june. I know we said april, then may. We're taking our own sweet time. Partially cos we want to take advantage of a bigger canvas for the artwork, like we're pink floyd or something. and partially cos we have this awesome/stupid idea to promote it that involves sending ourselves on a secret treasure trail first (note, its not a treasure trail). and partially, cos we three ghosts from the second city have this amazing opportunity to release our milestone record as a god damn fucking double 12" gatefold album, and we want it to be JUST PERFECT” PRESS: Key refresher features in key major rock/ indie magazines.
