HERCULES & LOVE AFFAIR It was always meant to be this way. When Andy Butler started Hercules And Love Affair in the mid ’00s the idea wasn’t to form a band in the traditional sense, but rather something that was in a constant state of flux. A revolving door policy when it comes to singers. Constant change keeping things fresh. Never getting too comfortable with a particular sound. Something that was constantly exciting. People have come and gone. Famously, Antony Heggarty of Antony And The Johnsons sang on Hercules And Love Affair’s 2008 debut single, ‘Blind’, six minutes of future retro disco that was voted the best song of the year by Pitchfork. The same year, Hercules And Love Affair’s self-titled debut album featured singers Nomi Ruiz and Kim Ann Foxman. In 2011, the follow-up, ‘Blue Songs’, saw Kim Ann Foxman return, appearing alongside Aerea Negrot, who sang on ‘Painted Eyes’, Shaun Wright (‘My House’) and Kele Okereke from Bloc Party (‘Step Up’). All according to plan, but, to casual observers, it’s sometimes given the impression that Hercules And Love Affair are fractured. Nothing could be further from the truth: it’s how it’s meant to be, it’s their strength. Hercules And Love Affair will always be ruled by Butler’s encyclopedic knowledge of 40 years of New York dance music, from disco to house and beyond to the DFA era; the effortless way he distills that knowledge into timeless grooves; soulful, classic house-inspired vocals (whoever happens to be singing them); and that bittersweet, delicious nocturnal melancholy that all the best dance music has always tapped, the joy of dancing away a broken heart at 4am. Butler contributes to our benchmark DJ mix series, ‘DJ Kicks’. It’s only his second commercial mix ever, the first being 2009’s excellent ‘Sidetracked’ for Renaissance. Butler started DJing when he was 15 and it’s in his blood. There are few people who know more about dance music history than him, but he combines it with an approach that’s bang up to date, recontextualizing classic tracks with disco that sounds like it’s been beamed in from the 22nd Century. In short, it’s a rivetting prospect. It is released in November 2012.

FINAL COVER FORTHCOMING TRACKLISTING CD

Its exclusive track ‘Release Me’ (featuring Whitney Fierce), meanwhile, sound like a forgotten Haçienda classic, the lost follow-up to ‘Baby Let Me Love You For Tonight’ by Kariya, and will be the first new music for almost 2 years. Butler has also overhauled Hercules And Love Affair’s live show, working in new songs alongside highlights from the previous records. He’s one of the most colourful characters in dance music and, likewise, Hercules And Love Affair are a hugely entertaining proposition on stage, as varied and vibrant as the New York night life that nurtured them.

MUDHONEY: LIVE IN BERLIN, 1988 On November 13, !K7 Records will release Mudhoney: Live In Berlin, 1988 on DVD. Filmed by a professional camera crew at 1988’s Berlin Independent Days festival, Live In Berlin, 1988 captures the Seattle grunge pioneers’ first ever performance on foreign soil. Playing as representatives of Sub Pop Records to a crowd of curious punters, critics and members of Europe’s independent music community, the show was also the first Grunge gig in Europe, laying essential groundwork for Grunge’s subsequent global domination. A testament to the enduring vitality of the independent music scene, the release celebrates the 27th anniversary of !K7, a Berlin-based independent label and distributor with offices in New York and London, and an internationally renowned purveyor of electronic music in particular. In its early days, !K7 also served as a video production company run by label-owner Horst Weidenmüller, whose crew filmed a number of performances from that year’s Berlin Independent Days festival. Weidenmüller recently rediscovered the Mudhoney footage, realising that he held in his hands a crucial rock’n’roll document that had to be shared with the world. Besides its historical importance, Mudhoney: Live In Berlin, 1988 presents one of the greatest rock’n’roll groups of all time at their very best, a glorious mess of flailed hair, acidic caterwaul, gnarly riffage and fried guitar skronk as Mudhoney tear through material from their epochal (but then-unreleased) Superfuzz Bigmuff EP and eponymous debut album. The show’s wild, thrilling, and funny-as-fuck, much like Mudhoney themselves. You’ll wish you’d been there – now, thanks to this Mudhoney: Live In Berlin, 1988, you almost can be.

FANGNAWA EXPERIENCE FANGA / MaALEM ABDALLAH GUINEA Strut announce a groundbreaking project for November 2012, a unique fusion of Afrobeat and Moroccan Gnawa music from respected French Afro collective Fanga and leading Moroccan maâlem (Gnawa master), Abdallah Guinéa with his band Nasse Ejadba. Curated by the excellent, forward-thinking Détours du Monde festival in Montpelier, France during 2011 in association with Nueva Onda, the collaboration re-interprets Fanga classics, cherry-picking tracks from their 15year career. “Our objective from the sessions was not so much to create an entirely new flow but more to bring the real Gnawa sound and trance feeling to some of our songs – we wanted to make the songs work so neither group’s sound was compromised. For us, it was also a human and cultural meeting. We represent two continents but also two ways of thinking and two completely different styles of life.” The two styles prove to be naturally compatible throughout. Leading out front on the tracks, Burkina Fasso-born Fanga bandleader Korbo and Guinéa share lead vocal duties. Guinéa builds his trademark ‘Fusion Trance’ through spiritual evocations, rolling, hypnotic rhythms and gimbri melodies while, by turn, Korbo serves up food for reflection, touching on the right to be different and promoting harmony between man and nature whilst denouncing the social injustices that result from an economic system out of control and designed to benefit the few. Rich, thought-provoking and effortlessly funky, ‘Fangnawa Experience’ is an ambitious piece of work and another significant chapter in the open-minded and cross-cultural climate for modern world music. Fanga and Maâlem Abdallah Guinéa will be touring Europe during 2013.

PRESENTS

Throughout the ‘80s and early ‘90s, Atlantic Starr was one of the most successful outfits in R&B. Little is known, however, of the group’s heady jazz and groove roots. Imagine the brassy ensemble funk of early Kool & The Gang or Earth, Wind & Fire on spirit-centric labels like Black Jazz or Strata-East, with vocals reflecting the freedom of mind and spirit in both lyric and timbre. This is the land from which platinum-selling Atlantic Starr came. This is Newban... Founders Albert “Duke” Jones Jr. and Porter Carroll Jr. were students in Greenburgh, New York, when they recruited a horde of classmates in forming Newban–named such because they were, after all, a “new band.” John Shearer, a friend of Jones and photographer for Life magazine, was a neighbor of legendary audio engineer Malcolm Addey and arranged for Newban to record with Addey at the famed Bell Sound Recording Studios. Newban and Newban 2 were released on Guinness Records in 1977. Guinness, however, was one of many labels during the late ‘70s that juked numbers and intentionally undersold and under-promoted albums for tax write-offs to keep parent imprints in the black. Co-founder and drummer Carroll and the majority of the members landed a deal with A&M Records and became Atlantic Starr. The Newban masters, however, remained safe and secure in the closet of Addey’s home on Riverside Drive in Manhattan. “I just called him up and said, ‘Listen, we got some things we can do after all these years,’” Jones says. Addey was with it, and returned the tapes for a nominal charge – in pristine, digitally re-mastered condition. Neither Jones nor Addey stopped believing in Newban, which is why he feels this BBE release could be the re-emergence of something lost some 35 years ago. “It might really make some noise with someone behind it,” Jones says about the “new” Newban compilation. “We could get together tomorrow.” KEY SELLING POINTS: • • • • • • •

Soul Jazz Records Presents... Delta Swamp Rock 2 STREET DATE: 11/13/2012 New on Soul Jazz Records, the second volume of Delta Swamp Rock continues to journey into the heartland of the American south, exploring the musical links between country, rock and soul music in the 1960s and early 1970s. Deep in the southern towns and cities of America - Muscle Shoals, Nashville, Memphis and Macon – select groups of (largely unknown) session musicians made musical history on an almost daily basis. Southern rock rose up in the 1970s on the huge commercial success of southern-based groups The Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, Lynyrd Skynyrd and others. Like the twisted roots of rock and roll, southern rock put country, rock and black music into a melting pot to create a unique sound. This gave rise to a new identity for white southern working-class youth. The roots of this revolution were to be found in an obscure corner of Alabama, in the sleepy town of Muscle Shoals, where, in the previous decade, a group of white in-house studio musicians worked together with the greatest rhythm and blues vocalists of the day - Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Etta James and many others - away from the segregated environment found just outside the studio walls. Delta Swamp Rock 2 contains extensive sleeve-notes in an accompanying deluxe large outsize book housed in double-backed card case, which also includes stunning photography from the Getty picture archive and new interviews with a number of the featured artists. As well as the deluxe slipcase CD edition there is also a similarly deluxe limited edition heavyweight double gatefold vinyl edition complete with full sleeve-notes and super-loud pressing. Pop Levi is not like other pop stars. For one thing, he is not a pop star – at least not in our particular dimension. Luckily, he has access to others. Ask him where the inspiration for his new album comes from and he will tell you that it was “recorded by a different version of me in another dimension, then transmitted to this version of me during prolonged isolation tank sessions.” I hope you’re following this so far because there’s more. “I’ve tried to render the songs as close to the versions I sent to myself,” Pop explains. “Although achieving a precise re-recording would prove impossible, I hope you and all the other versions of myself think it’s just the hotness.” Not only will he tell you this. He will believe it. Recorded in three purpose-built private home studios – in Norway, Greece and Los Angeles – “Medicine” rubs Pop’s obsession with Prince up against his love of Bolan, throws in a little Paul McCartney, some early Stooges, a chunk of Lindsey Buckingham and even a dash of Peter Gabriel for a record which channels bubblegum pop through Satanic ritual and classic rock for one of the oddest, funniest, most compellingly unique records you’re likely to hear in 2012. Whether he’s serenading Kenneth Anger (“Terrifying”), writing about R.D.Laing’s time at the Tavistock Institute (“Coming Down”) or, on title track, “Medicine” confronting the “chemical-induced split personality living inside of me,” Pop has the ability to wrap his ideas in gorgeous hooks, crunching guitar work and a love of crazed backing vox. And in all honesty, nothing in the world is better than crazed backing vox. He can write a truly tender ballad (“Bye-Byes”) or make wonky electro-rock (“Records,” with vocal help from the irrepressibly LA Bunny Holiday) or mess with the blues on “Remember, Remember.” In fact he can do pretty much whatever he wants – so long as it sounds like Pop Levi. The whole leaves most other purveyors of guitar-based pop/rock, in fact most other purveyors of music full stop, seeming, well, a little bit tame in comparison, a little bit grey, a little bit earnest. Pop combines wild production techniques with super-riffing slabs of guitar – what more could you want? So yes, you can stick with your this and that and the other, your tasteful, safe, cool takes on whatever it is everyone thinks everyone else is doing. That’s fine. Life only lasts eighty years or so, after all, and it’s best you spend as much of that time as possible worrying about how you appear to the people around you. Or, alternatively, you can hitch a ride with a multidimensional glam-funk sex loon and, for once, jump into something without knowing where you’re going to end up. Or even if you care. Last words to the man himself. “File under: Future rock, make your soul go heavy.” You got it.

2000 : Trans Am’s fifth studio album Red Line is released. Out of print on vinyl for nearly a decade we are happy to finally offer it again. This 2012 edition was remastered to vinyl by Roger Seibel at SAE Mastering and pressed on high quality virgin vinyl. The two LPs are packaged in a deluxe old-style tip-on gatefold jacket fully replicating the original artwork and includes a download coupon for the first time! Trans Am’s fifth album, Red Line, with twenty-one tracks spans over seventy-three minutes and features lush vocals, massive horns, tight electronic jams, guest musicians, acoustic guitar, soaring keyboards, in-yourface mixing, and occasional sitar. It is a mammoth recording that documents the band’s mastery of both rock and electronic compositions and captures the true essence of Trans Am. Red Line is the first of the band’s releases to utilize “clean” vocals. Effected vocals exist on some tracks and the infamous vocoder has not disappeared, but for the first time Trans Am venture into the realm of ”normal singing.” The venture is successful. Tracks such as “Play in the Summer”, “Slow Response”, and “I’m Coming Down” show a side of the band that few knew existed.

1998 : Tortoise’s third studio album TNT is released. In and out of print over the past decade we are happy to finally give everyone what they have been asking for - TNT on vinyl again! Pressed on high quality virgin vinyl, the two LPs are packaged in a deluxe old-style tip-on gatefold jacket fully replicating the original artwork and includes a download coupon for the first time! Tortoise’s third full-length release, TNT, was written and recorded during a 10-month interval in 1997. This longer-than-usual writing/production schedule was purposefully undertaken by the group in the hopes of crafting an expansive, diverse, yet thematically coherent offering. TNT builds upon the spare, instrumental framework of the group’s first, self-titled album, and the extended edits, melodic adventures, and klangfarben of the subsequent full-length release, Millions Now Living Will Never Die. Further to this, Tortoise’s interest in the possibilities offered by the remixing of tracks was realized within the actual production of TNT; individual elements, sections, or sometimes whole compositions mutate within the album’s shifting framework. These techniques were suitably realized thanks in part to the use of nonlinear digital recording and editing methods, the first example of such work for the group.

GENRE : ROCK/PSYCHEDELIC FILE UNDER: “E” Eternal Tapestry RELEASE DATE : November 13, 2012 NO EXPORT TRACK LISTING: A World Out of Time, Portland quintet Eternal Tapestry’s second full-length of 2012, is a new kind of album for the band. As 01. When I Was In Your Mind opposed to previous efforts, which were culled from many 02. Planetoid 127 hours of recordings, it was recorded as a whole. The resulting 03. Alone Against Tomorrow 04. The Weird Stone record, while not restricted to the four minute song, has the 05. Apocalypse Troll focus and the flow that only music conceived as a narrative 06. When Gravity Fails can. Taking inspiration from groups like Faust and Algarnas 07. The Currents of Space Tradgard, the album unfolds as a collage, the most salient 08. Sand Into Rain elements of their sound sewn into a seamless patchwork. In the process, the group has constructed an incredibly dynamic album, juxtaposing expansive improvised sections with their SALES POINTS most deliberate material yet. A World Out of Time follows this year’s sold out LP-only The album opens with “When I Was In Your Mind,” which evolves from an eerie duel e-bow plateau into an epic burner. As the band reaches its boiling point, splinters of organ melody emerge, signaling the transition into the otherworldly “Planetoid 127.” The ongoing influence of classic sci-fi is apparent, while field recordings of rain seem to reference a more naturalist past, as if our technologically enhanced world is the dystopian future we always feared would come to pass. The album closes with the tranquil lament of “Sand Into Rain,” a psych-folk song bringing to mind early Fairport Convention or Pentangle. Although vocals have been used by Eternal Tapestry in the past, this marks the first occasion where the voice and lyrics are the focal point of a defined song. As the last notes sound, we are left with the feeling that we have just woken from a strange and complex dream. release Dawn In 2 Dimensions (Thrill 307, June 2012). This new album is the closest that Eternal Tapestry has ever gotten to a more traditional “pop” song structure. While still full of epic psych passages, it also contains the band’s first ballad CD version in 4 panel mini-LP style gatefold package. LP version includes free download coupon. First 500 copies are pressed on opaque red vinyl, remainder on black Eternal Tapestry will tour in support of this new full length album “Eternal Tapestry have always played like a who’s who of the psychedelic underground... their scorched, cosmic psych has never sounded more complete.” - Altered Zones/Raven Sings the Blues “It’s some fantastically heady stuff, heart of the sun sort of lysergic heaviness, rife with chanted vocals, lush layered riffing, and those tangled guitar melodies, a laid back psychedelic shredding drifting atop the groups churning spaciness” - Roadburn “ A dizzying home brew of Funhouse-esque sax madness and Acid Mothers Temple-worshipping space fuzz that lingers in your eardrums” - Blurt

GENRE : ROCK FILE UNDER: “G” Golden Void RELEASE DATE : November 13, 2012 NO EXPORT The members of Golden Void have been connected musically off and on since they were teenagers. After playing in various bands together TRACK LISTING: and apart throughout high school and the intervening years, Isaiah Mitchell (guitar/vocals, also of Earthless), Aaron Morgan (bass), and Justin Pinkerton (drums) coalesced as Golden Void after Mitchell’s move to the Bay Area in 2009. When the group realized they needed a keyboard player, the addition of Camilla Saufly-Mitchell seemed only natural. Listening to their self-titled debut album, the high level of musical kindredship that only comes from playing music together during those formative years is instantly apparent. In an age of the internet’s infinite mirror that rewards pointless novelty rather than substance, Golden Void has succeeded in creating a record that exists beyond bloggable tropes of the present and expands upon the traditions of the past.

Golden Void explores the dichotomy of destruction and devotion. On the galloping opener “Art of Invading,” Mitchell describes the destructive acts of the “invader,” over raw, fuzzy guitars and Pinkerton’s steady 6/8 groove. On closer “Atlantis” Mitchell sings about rising seas cleansing the earth of people and culture while displaying some of the most impressive, and chillingly calm, vocal harmonies on the record. Conversely, “Jetsun Dolma” examines devotion through the use of Tibetan Buddhism’s 21 Taras, enchanced by Saufly-Mitchell’s otherworldly keyboard. Throughout, the album is driven and lifted by the stellar guitar work of Isaiah Mitchell. The album was recorded with Phil Manley at Lucky Cat Studios in San Francisco, and was recorded live to tape with few overdubs. It was mastered and cut from tape by Roger Seibal at SAE Mastering. Although the songs drift into moody and dark territories, the prevailing sentiment is optimistic. Golden Void is a record of unpretentious, extremely well crafted, totally addictive rock and roll. Turn it up!

RELEASE DATE: MARCH 29TH, 2011

THERE WERE SEVEN The Herbaliser are poised to release their first album in four years There Were Seven - through their own imprint Department H. There Were Seven, is The Herbaliser's seventh album of original material in the band's seventeen-year history. It is a return to their signature sound of gigantic hip hop beats combined with atmospheric orchestral elements but with a less familiar, psychedelic, amplified edge to it. The album is, for the most part, railing against a music industry machine that seems to churn out pop/dance/rap robots that only speak autotune, by the day. Not descending into retro but sounding oddly futuristic in places, the recording makes the point that we can move things forward without removing human beings from the equation. Having established a tradition of working with top-drawer vocal talents (MF Doom, Jean Grae, Roots Manuva, Rakaa Iriscience, Seaming To) the Herbs' present a stellar line-up on this release. First single, ”The Lost Boy" places Hannah Clive's haunting vocal amongst steely, descending guitars, eerie organ, and a whirring, oscillating, vintage Moog. Up-and-coming wordsmith, George the Poet, sets the world to rights on "A Sad State of Affairs". "Zero Hill" features Twin Peaks in a world where making music is illegal, over a beat that sounds like it was made on an old 'Speak and Spell' toy. The high energy spitting flute of "Take 'em On", the electro-funk of "Mother Dove", the scintillating dub of "Extravagance" and Teenburger cheerfully dispatching the living dead are just a few of the highlights of this engaging record. The overriding theme is Analog vs Digital. A dystopian future, the music industry, a computer learning to imitate the human voice, a tribute to Danny Glover, breaking rules for the sake of it, social isolation and even Zombie apocalypse are also thrown into the mix. All delivered with that mix of drama and wit that is The Herbaliser's stock-in-trade. TRACKLISTING: 1) RETURN OF THE SEVEN 2) THE LOST BOY 3) WELCOME TO EXTRAVAGANCE 4) MOTHER DOVE 5) ZERO HILL 6) TAKE ‘EM ON 7) A SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS 8) SETTING UP 9) CRIMES AND MISDEMEANOURS 10) WHAT YOU ASKED FOR 11) MARCH OF THE DEAD THINGS 12) DEEP IN THE WOODS 13) INSIDE THE MACHINE 14) DANNY GLOVER

MYKA 9 & FACTOR SOVEREIGN SOUL FFINC042 CD/LP : MYKA 9 & FACTOR SOVEREIGN SOUL RELEASE DATE : NOVEMBER 13, 2012 Usually, it’s that you’ve either never heard Myka 9 or you’re given to making fantastic claims about the man and about his virtuosity. Superlatives adhere to Myka, yet he is absurdly under-known for an artist of his stature, and it’s this paradox that too often governs discussion of his two and a half decades in rap. (A body of work, by the way, bookended by ghostwriting two songs on N.W.A. and the Posse’s 1987 LP and now by this piece, Sovereign Soul.) Perhaps it’s simply that Myka is more or less alone in the world of rap. His tonal palette is broader and brighter and his voice more liquid than other rappers, his melodic sensibility more unpredictably hard bop than 80’s pop soul— though he goes there too. And he has harder angles too— peep his compelling snarl here on the street duet, “Indigenous Areas,” with the elusive but excellent ERule. Myka’s legend began in Freestyle Fellowship, whose independent debut in 1991 is comparable only to De La Soul’s The Daisy Age in opening up possibilities for determined experimentation in hiphop. As Pitchfork observed, “tocoast say that Freestyle hop. As Pitchfork observed, “to say that Freestyle Fellowship significantly influenced west hip-hop is like significantly coast “the hipsaying that Jesus was a pivotal figure in Christianity.“ AndFellowship Fellowship, impossibly, influenced persists inwest producing hop is likemantra, saying “We that Jesus wasfall a pivotal in highest standard of rhyme,” as Chuck D. has it, ever confirming their will never the fuckfigure off, we promise.” And Chuck’s “highest standard” is soaring: if Jay-Z has said, “If skills sold, truth be told,/ I'd probably be, lyrically, Talib Kweli,” then Kweli has rapped that “writing rhymes with Myka 9” was a career high akin to his first tour with The Roots. Myka also must be the only rapper to have attempted, as a teenager, to battle both Run DMC (with Aceyalone at a South Central Denny’s) and LL Cool J (at a backyard party), though the former demurred and the latter never learned of the plot on his rep, as Myka choked on a chunk of ice from his gin and juice while en route. All the high-flying talk, though, all of these attempts to grasp at the dazzling fact of Myka’s rhymin’, does a strange disservice to his work. Even if we indulge the legend, he doesn’t; he’s never larded his music with reminders of hisreputation or references to his classics, though his career is lit with them (see, forinstance, “Park Bench People,” recently and beautifully interpreted by Blue Note’s Jose James). The new classic here just may be “Mind Heights,” vivid and lively though colored by a mature resignation. “It takes a real man to admit he was wrong,” he sweetly sings in the song’s opening chords before loosing a double-time, baritone barrage of ruminations on break-ups, class-conscious lovers, and regret. “It takes a real man to put in a song,” he croons in conclusion two and a half minutes later, “and this is that song.” The title of Sovereign Soul is an affirmation of Myka’s whole aesthetic: searching, spiritual, and fiercely independent of the burdens and strictures of pop expectation. And the album is the work a 42 year old who happens to have invented more vocal styles than any rapper living or now with Biggie, and who toils still, crafting songs of bare soul and hard-won honesty in a carpeted one-room apartment off La Brea. As with Myka's 2009 collaboration, 1969, the music here flows from the head and hands of Factor, a producer from the prairies of Saskatoon in Western Canada, about half a continent from South Los Angeles. Factor’s aesthetic forte is a keen sense of balance, surely a testament to the fact that he began beatwork as a DJ nearly fifteen years ago. Witness, for example, the title track of Sovereign Soul, where grit-caked guitar lines snake around and counter a haunted choral loop, with which Myka harmonizes at the song's end. Or the smoky, washed-out atmospherics of “Bless Me Out” “In So Far As We Know,” and “Mind Heights,” which hit notes and locate moods uncommon in rap. Factor seamlessly blends a love of heavy drums from the so-called golden age of hip-hop production with a deeply emotive melodic sensibility, enabled by his far-ranging taste in samples and synths. Rhythmically insistent yet tonally rich, rappers love to find their voices in them. Indeed, his beats have become a magnet for some of the finest emcees working: Kool Keith, Aesop Rock, Sadat X, Xzibit, Tha Liks, Pigeon John, and Buck 65, among them. Factor also crafts well-regarded solo work, such as 2010’s Lawson Graham, which the Boston Phoenix named "a damn classic," and which Confront Magazine ranked the second best of 2010.

(Part Of The September Cargo Collective) Originally from Lodz, but raised in Tel Aviv, Malka Spigel began her musical and artistic life in Amsterdam in the early 1980s. There, she first picked up a bass guitar and, with fellow émigrés Berry Sakharof and Samy Birnbach, founded Minimal Compact, whose middle-eastern nuanced postpunk would garner a large, loyal following, especially in continental Europe. The band (later joined by Rami Fortis and Max Franken) put out six studio albums between 1981 and 1988, and their song ‘When I Go’ – sung by Spigel – was famously featured on the soundtrack to Wim Wenders’s 1987 film, “Wings Of Desire”. ‘Every Day Is Like The First Day’ may be Malka Spigel’s third solo album, but it opens a whole new vista for her work, and has all the freshness and promise of an exciting debut. The genesis of this material was an exploratory four-day stint with Newman with “zero preparation” at a studio run by Stereolab’s Andy Ramsay, which offered a treasure trove of musical playthings with which to interact intuitively – from bouzouki and vibraphone to decommissioned Stereolab organs and synths. Having laid the foundations, the couple embarked on a second phase, opening the work up to collaboration with artists include Alexander Balanescu, Andy Ramsay, Johnny Marr, Julie Campbell (LoneLady Psychic Life), Matthew Simms (It Hugs Back, Wire), Nik Colk Void (Factory Floor, KaitO, Carter Tutti Void), Ronald Lippok (To Rococo Rot, Tarwater), and acclaimed soundtrack composer Teho Teardo. What comes across from this elaborate process (involving a grand total of thirteen musicians, four countries and eight studios) is the essence of each song as what Spigel would call “the first song” – a distinct, singular entity, with its own unique emotional resonance and atmosphere. Blending real and synthetic instruments in ways that are at once seamless and striking, these songs are as rich as they are diverse. A meditation on ephemerality in 3/4, ‘Ammonite’ sets the agenda, its Mellotron flute, live strings and bouzouki shaping otherworldly textures. Newman’s production here – and throughout the record – is crucial, allowing the individual parts to breathe and retain their own identity, while weaving them into a lush, integrated whole. There’s often a subtly hypnotic quality to this work, most memorably on tracks that forego drums, building cyclical patterns from more understated percussive and melodic elements such as vibraphone, xylophone, violin, cello and Mellotron: the ethereal ‘Dream Time’ and ‘After The Rain’, the haunted ‘Back In The Old City’ and the bittersweet ‘Lost In Sound’. Other tracks have a greater immediacy and a sometimes harsher edge. This is, above all, an album about creativity and the creative process – an artistic statement bringing together her work in different media, and music made with a visual artist’s sense of colour, atmosphere and composition. It’s been a busy year for Clark. Hot on the heels of his sixth critically acclaimed LP, Iradelphic, an EP of album reworks and all new material entitled Fantasm Planes, and stellar live performances in North America and abroad, Clark’s 2001 debut Clarence Park is now receiving the reissue treatment. Combining abstract, textural collages of sound with unconventional arrangements and crisp, dancefloorready breakbeats, Clarence Park first set forth the framework that Clark would go on to break down and rebuild into astounding new shapes with each subsequent record. This reissue also sees the release of previously-unheard recordings from the Clarence Park sessions, providing new listeners and longtime fans alike with a fresh glimpse into the development of one of Warp’s longest-running and most beloved artists.

Artist: Darkstar Title: Timeaway 11.13.2012

WARP9339

Overview "Darkstar have re-invented themselves to create one of the dance albums of the year" – Pitchfork Warp Records' newest signing, Darkstar, have delivered a track that is being called a 'game changer' by the select few who have heard it. "Timeaway" gives a taste of the beauty and intricacy to come from the trio. This 12" single comes in a stunning 3mm-spined sleeve and the disk contains 10 locked grooves of various sounds from the brains of Darkstar.

ARTWORK TBA Format: 12” vinyl Boxlot: TBA Price: $7.99 Packaging: 1-sided trackless 12” in 3mm-spined sleeve w/ News #1-10 locked groove

The group first coalesced in the underground, electronic thrum of London’s nascent grime and dubstep sphere in the middle 2000’s, growing from attending the now-fabled early FWD club nights to releasing a pair of game-changing 12” singles on Kode 9’s fledgling Hyperdub label. These were marked departures at the time, fusing unique sonic futurism with an avant-garde pop sensibility that immediately set the duo of Aiden Whalley and James Young apart from the glut of producers emerging at the time. After a fitful and productive period culminating in a discarded album’s worth of tracks and the introduction of vocalist James Buttery, the band released their debut album, North, to critical acclaim. “Timeaway” is the first new material to come from Darkstar in two years, and the first taste of their forthcoming Warp recordings. As Darkstar explain, the song is a glance at their future: “It's very much us, but us looking forward. It's off-kilter and processed and it bubbles and moves. We experimented sonically so much and i think what we ended up with is fitting not only to that time period and the experience of making this record but also to where we want to start from next time.”

Selling Points • First single since their highly-acclaimed Hyperdub debut, North • Gorgeous, lush sounds from the trio, working with a producer, Richard Formby (Wild Beasts, Sarah Mitchell) for the first time

DAN DEACON AMERICA

Overview: Domino is proud to announce the release of Dan Deacon’s new album, America, out August 28th. America is Dan Deacon’s most powerful work to date, the culmination of years spent playing both

DIY venues and concert halls across the world, of exercises in the power of the individual and a Tracklist coordinated mass, of a disenfranchised mind questioning notions of cultural identity and values. 1. Guilford Avenue Bridge 2. True Thrush There’s a subtler approach to timbre on America, informed by Deacon’s recent experiences in the 3. Lots classical world - commissions and collaborations, his Carnegie Hall debut; his first film score (for 4. Prettyboy a Francis Ford Coppola film). The integration of acoustic textures - including concert percussion, 5. Crash Jam winds, brass, and strings -- has ramped up exponentially since Deacon first ventured outside of purely synthesized sound on 2009’s Bromst. 6. USA I: Is a Monster 7. USA II: The Great American Desert Dan Deacon is set to head out on a major market headlining North American tour this autumn, 8. USA III: Rail performing with his streamlined ensemble of two drummers -- Jeremy Hyman of Boredoms, Po9. USA IV: Manifest

nytail; Kevin O’Meara of Videohippos -- with America producer Chester Endersby Gwazda joining Dan on electronics.

Dan Deacon shows are renowned for the spectacle of hundreds, even thousands, of jubilant people doing coordinated movement. It’s a sight to behold, but it’s even more amazing to participate. And for Deacon, what is ostensibly just “fun” started to take on a profound dimension since the release of 2009’s Bromst, of people uniting and claiming physical space in an ecstatic act of empowerment. He saw a metaphor in there, a connection with recent movements like the Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street. America is the soundtrack of that realization - ecstatic, celebratory sounds in conjunction with thematically darker undercurrents. Selling Points: - Dan Deacon’s previous album, Bromst, released on Carpark Records in March 2009 has scanned more than 20k to date. The album featured prominently at several publications: Pitchfork (Best New Music), NPR Music (First Listen/Weekend All Things Considered), The Fader, Stereogum! - The first track from the album, Lots, premiered online in mid-May. It was featured on NPR All Songs Considered; A video for the second track, True Thrush, was released in late-July. It received great reviews from NPR, Rolling Stone (3.5/5 stars), SPIN (25 Summer Albums You Have to Hear), and Stereogum. - Full press servicing by Force Field PR underway and radio campaign to impact non-commercial radio stations around release . EARLY online and print features already confirmed to run around album release include: UNDER THE RADAR cover of Protest Issue, SPIN print feature, Magnet print feature, NPR First Listen, NPR Weekend All Things Considered on-air interview, Pitchfork interview and plenty of local (Baltimore) print coverage. Print reviews in: Alternative Press, Filter, Relix, Under the Radar. More to be announced soon! - He performed at SXSW 2012 - including NPR’s official SXSW showcase; Insound; iHeartComix; and more. Hometown release week show in Baltimore scheduled; select Midwest US dates around album release. Full North American tour to commence October-December. - Online Instagram photo contest will be running one month after album release soliciting fans for images of a flag featuring the album artwork. Winner will have their photo featured on a future America single release. More details can be found at dandeacon.com. - The LP is a single standard weight vinyl housed in a printed inner euro sleeve featuring album lyrics and includes a mp3 download card.

THERE HAVE been many great bands that didn’t receive the level of recognition due to them, but none have been more deserving than Angel. Cruelly denied the opportunity to bask in the spotlight of success, Angel’s story is a tear-jerker in the grandest tradition. A great band, astonishing musicianship, sensational songs and a stunning stage show but for some reason doomed to cult status, maybe because they were - in effect - wildly ahead of their time and far beyond the realms of previously known parameters. Blood Command was formed in the fish and oil smelling suburbs of western Norway in 2008 by singer Silje, guitarist Yngve and drummer Sigurd. They had one thing in mind: Combining the hedonistic club music they loved to dance and party to, with the music that formed their lives: Punk, hardcore and rocknroll. The album is produced by guitarist Yngve and long-time band collaborator and norwegian hardcore punk-stayer Dag Erik "Dagger" Nygaard. The recording was a painstakingly long process, but guitarist, producer and songwriter Yngve finally got what he wanted. With FUNERAL BEACH, Blood Command has delivered their definitive statement. An album that is instantly catchy, but still gets better on every listen. The mark of a classic.

Produced by Emil Nikolaisen of Serena Maneesh. Okkultokrati was concieved when members from Haust and a bunch of other Oslo-based underground bands joined forces with the aim to create fast and ugly music that was not hardcore - and definitely not metal! Together with Haust, Dark Times and a handful of other bands, Okkultokrati constitutes the Black Hole Crew-scene, famed for their reluctancy to be associated with anything else but themselves. Building their anthems on straightforward punk beats with the filth of unholy rock n' roll running through their veins, Okkultokrati proudly let their influences from the masters of the genre bleed through, yet their spine-crushing anthems speak for themselves with unique guitar atmospheres and a mix of high/low-end riffage busting through the thunderous percussion and gnarled vocals. The lyrical themes deal with the great end on three levels: The end of the universe, the end of the world and the end of self.

It’s the 12TH album they’ve released in a career dating back to the late 1980’s. This album marks a change in the bands sound, nothing too drastic but it’s a bigger, ballsier sound, probably due to the addition of John Forrester on double bass plus a few others at the recording and the ever great, Jim Riley at Ranscome in Rochester… my dear!

Heartbreak, working shitty jobs to survive and the loneliness of public transport in a city, Craig Dermody knows no other way than heart-on-sleeve. Paying bills, selling paintings, going to work, smoking cigarettes, thinking rationally - Craig Dermody's difficulty performing these mundane actions is well documented on Para Vista Social Club, the debut album from his revolving-cast Australian band Scott & Charlene's Wedding. Originally pressed up to just 200 copies with each sleeve painted by Dermody himself, these have now long since sold out, however the album will be reissued worldwide by London label Critical Heights in November. Para Vista Social Club (named for the Adelaide suburb in which Dermody grew up) is an off-the-cuff collection of real-life woes, each song spilling out like a soused diary entry. Dermody wrote the songs faithfully about his experiences and from there enlisted a backing band that knew not to overcomplicate the rusty, grunge-damaged appeal of the songs. And so we have guitarist Luke Horton (Love of Diagrams), bassist Jarrod Quarrel (St Helens, Lost Animal), and drummer Dion Nania (Panel of Judges) channeling the Velvet Underground and The Wipers against Dermody's slurred singing and name-checking of specific Melbourne transit lines, often the site of his melancholic self-reflection. After Para Vista Social Club's original Australian self-release, Dermody headed to America indefinitely, putting this particular incarnation of the band on ice. Now based in New York, the band keeps changing and Dermody keeps writing songs under the name Scott and Charlene's Wedding. There will be a new album in early 2013. Despite Dermody's relative inexperience playing guitar and writing songs his musical CV consists of sharing lead vocals in Spider Vomit and playing bass in the scrappy Lindsey Low Hand, the songs on Para Vista Social Club aren't short and simple. They're long, knotty jams, often digging into a single idea and not looking up for the next few minutes with Dermody's voice ranging from a rough moan on 'Born To Lose' and speech-like drawl on 'Every Detail' to a bummed flatness on 'Foreign Lands' and a surprisingly clean presence on the poppy 'Wiseman At The Station'. 'Footscray Station' is the album's breakout track, a shuddering feat of shaggy-dog jangle and perfectly bruised lyrics, leading directly on to another train-themed song, 'Epping Line', a crawl of a song documenting Dermody's own crawl to work as well as a demoralising phone conversation with his father. A lot of the themes are well trodden to say the least - heartbreak, working shitty jobs to survive, and the loneliness of public transit in a city - but the delivery is so wincing and unpolished that it socks you in the gut before you can call it clichĂŠ. Para Vista Social Club is sludgy and hypnotic and true; an undisguised catalogue of the licks we take in our youth. When Dermody sings, "I think I lost my soul/ But I found it again in rock'n'roll", it's not just an easy rhyme we've all heard before. It's something closer to the salvation provided by cheap beer, good music and even better friends. Tracks : 1. Born To Lose 2. Footscray Station 3. Epping Line 4. Rejected 5. Every Detail 6.
