The LEOPARDS
Magic Still Exists
Limited EDITION VINYL reissue of the 1987 classic VOXX album
In 1987 The Leopards sounded as wonderfully Kinky as ever, and when the band got around to releasing Magic Still Exists, the Kinks had a lower profile than ever, which made this album a most welcome arrival. A now classic record from the first wave of garage revival repressed for the first time since its original release on Voxx Records.

NEW RELEASES FOR 10TH JANUARY 2012 Le Roux - Up
FORMAT - CD LABEL - Rock Candy UPC - 827565058853 CATALOG # - CANDY125 LIST PRICE - $20.99 Originally released in 1980, LeRoux’s ‘Up’ album is regarded as one of the cornerstones of pomp rock. Embellished with flamboyant keyboards but utilising traditional hard rock as its backbone, their style accommodated complex arrangements, melodic guitar work and impressive vocals from Jeff Pollard. Produced by feted session musician Jai Winding (Jackson Browne, Boz Scaggs), the ‘Up’ album exploded out of the starting gate to huge approval by those that took notice. Although sales may have been somewhat limited, their influence was persuasive and powerful, especially in Europe where ‘Up’ was hailed as a solid gold masterpiece by connoisseurs of the genre. Stuffed to the brim with astonishing tracks including ‘Let Me Be Your Fantasy’, ‘Get It Right The First Time’, ‘Mystery’ and the truly impressive ‘Roll Away The Stone’, the album oozes both class and control, delivering maximum melody at every available opportunity. The sound is big, bold and crystal clear propelling the contents to the stars and beyond.
Gamma - Gamma FORMAT - CD LABEL - Rock Candy UPC -827565058426 CATALOG # -CANDY113 LIST PRICE - $20.99 Originally issued in 1980 and produced by Gary Lyons (Foreigner, UFO, Aerosmith), it is a record erupting with fire and brimstone including a brace of classic hard rock cuts such as ‘Mean Streak’, ‘Dirty City’, ‘Four Horsemen’ and a brilliant interpretation of Thunderclap Newman’s timeless ‘Something In The Air’. Man of the match? If it ain’t Ronnie blasting away on his trusted Gibson Les Paul then it must surely be vocalist Davey Pattison; a voice of pure blues soaked brilliance.
Special Limited Deluxe Collector’s Edition / 1st time on CD in Europe/ Features Ronnie Montrose and Denny Carmassi from Montrose/ Fully remastered sound shaped from 24 BIT digital technology / 16 page full colour booklet – 3,500 word essay, enhanced artwork, rare photos and band involvement.
Sheriff - Sheriff FORMAT - CD LABEL - Rock Candy UPC CANDY126 LIST PRICE - $20.99
- 827565058860 CATALOG # -
Initially issued in 1982, Sheriff’s debut album failed to ignite the public’s consciousness. Sure, it was a fine record with all the accoutrements expected of such work but the bands appeal was severely dented by inadequate promotion and a crowded market place. Amazingly, in 1989 DJ started spinning the power Ballad ‘When I’m With You’, a song that quickly gained momentum at virtually every radio station resulting in a US #1 hit single. This was a unique and totally overwhelming event and one that made everyone reassess the Sheriff album in an entirely new light. Pompous and grandiose, Sheriff’s style is perfectly in alignment with all the great AOR bands of the early 80s, offering up huge hooks, ripping guitar work and killer keyboard arrangements. The icing on the cake, however, is Freddy Curci’s amazing vocals, a man blessed with a range that evokes the greatest work of Freddy Mercury and Steve Perry. Hear it at all costs.

The songs that would be on our next album . some of these never made it and the "Into Your Arms " I did here is better than the one on the album ( i like it anyway ) So sit back, snort some no doze and listen for the tunes, the sea ,the tape hiss ( ahhh ) , the cars , the birds the trucks , and the killer motorcycle at the end of being around !! Wherever you live I'll be back there soon , inshallah !!!. Until then let's all make the most of the tail-end of sex with furniture -Yours ever faithfully” Evan G Dando.
Terror Danjah ft Meleka & D.O.K. - U Make Me Feel / Morph 2 FORMAT - 12 LABEL - Hyperdub UPC -5055300330109 CATALOG # - HDB058 LIST PRICE - $10.99 Terror Danjah's first Hyperdub single of 2011 is an amazing coup, pulling out of the archive a near-perfect collaboration with singer Meleka, where Terror tempers his grimey production, veering uncharacteristically towards featherlight lushness, while lacing Meleka's sensuous, pitched melisma with a deceptively vicious sub. Terror's crisp, asymmetric bed of stuttering drums remind us of a time gone by when Timbaland's falter-funk R&B rhythm programming was an inspiration. 'Morph 2' featuring D.O.K. is the yang to 'U Make Me Feel's yin, drawing gruff, serious strings through hall of mirrors micro-edits, dragging the riff backwards, punctuating it with gremlin chuckles and “woo”s and running the pattern against a tense bleepy melody. It's a dark and vertiginous rush with all the anger of Grime at it's ferocious peak.

Thee Gravemen -Thee Gravemen FORMAT - CD/LP LABEL - Dirty Water Club UPC - CD: 5023903264466 / LP:5023903264459 CATALOG # - CD:DWC1057/ LP:DWC1057LP LIST PRICE CD:$17.99 / LP:$20.99 Raw, wild, horrific, and tons of fun is the best way to describe this two man horror-trash band from southern Sweden. These two English guys aren’t interested in pop fame or hit records. Like voodoo witchdoctors hunting for prey to turn into zombies, Thee Gravemen stalk the stage, spinning lurid tales of the human predilection for sin and man’s capacity for inflicting suffering on his fellow man, all done with fearsome fuzz-busting guitars and crushing, bone-shaking drumming to a sleazy Fall-like rockabilly beat. In these sombre and self-conscious times it is right now that such primitive, unbridled sounds are absolutely and utterly necessary.

They play snotty, moronic and straight-to-the-point gonzo-garage punk rock, banging out a furious 20-minute set of short and catchy songs that bring to mind something like Slaughter and the Dogs meet the Electric Eels. The 12 tracks on this album are inspired minioperas, played with the kind of near-incompetent teenage enthusiasm which only borderline middle-aged, lowlifes, has-beens and never-weres can truly muster.

LIVE AT OLD SOUTH CHURCH
On Friday night, October 22nd, 2010, Caspian played a benefit concert in Boston, MA at The Old South Church. the performance was a benefit for Amirah, a non-profit organization located in Boston dedicated to providing whole-person care for victims of human sexual trafficking. Now, we’ve wanted to release live Caspian material since the first time we ever saw them perform; if you’ve ever seen them play, then you know why. On this evening in particular, the band was in that special place that special bands go when things come together perfectly during a performance, and keep in mind we were in a MASSIVE, Gothic Revival style church built in 1875. I suppose the term “epic” would fail miserably in trying to convey the sheer size of the sound that was reverberating hundreds and hundreds of feet from wall to wall to ceiling to floor. Natural reverb, an organic wall of sound. Again, if you’ve seen the band perform, you have witnessed this impenetrable wall, but never like this. Not in a building this size, or in a room this conducive to utter aural bliss. For those lucky enough to be witnessing the event this evening, it’s highly unlikely that anything ever felt quite so “religious”. The audio of this experience was captured, and while it’s true that there’s nothing like actually being there, this recreation is about as close as it gets. It’s our privilege to bring these first official live recordings of Caspian to you, in a way we feel is indicative of the sheer power on display when the band performs. If you’ve never seen the band, this should serve as the ultimate motivator in making that happen as soon as possible. If you have seen the band, just close your eyes and imagine. 1000 of these will be pressed total. with 200 of them on a record store exclusive white vinyl, not available anywhere online. The 5 color jackets will be printed on 20pt SBS stock and feature an image of the church the performance was held in. This serves as the proper documentation of an evening that will live on for eternity.

NADA SURF
THE STARS ARE INDIFFERENT TO ASTRONOMY bark122 CD / LP+MP3
STREET DATE: JANUARY 24, 2012 “Did you ever, as a kid, want to crawl into the speakers?” asks Nada Surf singer-guitarist Matthew Caws. “I did – here was OK, but there was much better.” And that's pretty much what Nada Surf is all about – Caws, bassist Daniel Lorca, and drummer Ira Elliot are in love with the way rock music can transport you to a new and wonderful place in a beguiling rush of beats, chords, hooks and words. And they do it 10 times over on their brilliant sixth album, The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy. Before, Nada Surf albums simply took on the character of the songs that the band came up with at the time. This one was different – there was a plan. “We've always played faster and a little harder live,” Caws says, “but we'd play so carefully in the studio. So with this album, we made a conscious decision to preserve what it felt like in the practice room, when you play with that new-song energy. Just embrace it and not worry whether we’re overdoing it, kind of get all the thinking out of the way.”
TRACKLISTING 1. Clear Eye Clouded Mind 2. Waiting For Something 3. When I Was Young 4. Jules And Jim 5. The Moon Is Calling 6. Teenage Dreams 7. Looking Through 8. Let The Fight Do The Fighting 9. No Snow On The Mountain 10. The Future
Chris Shaw came in to record and produce. Shaw, who’s made records with the likes of Bob Dylan, Super Furry Animals and Wilco had mixed Nada Surf's indie hit “Always Love,” impressing the band with his quick and expert work, not to mention his sense of humor. A few years ago, Caws met guitarist Doug Gillard (Guided by Voices, Death of Samantha) one night at a show, when the latter ambled over to him and offered to “lay down some James Honeyman-Scott licks” next time they recorded. Since then Gillard has became such an integral part of the band's sound that they invited him to play on Stars too. The Stars has a somewhat more optimistic, more outward-looking tone than previous Nada Surf albums. On the yearning “Waiting for Something,” Caws sings, “This new peace/ I can feel it now,” and that serenity – and not anger – is actually what fueled the music's extra kick. The album springs from the notion of music as an alternative reality, and songs as things you can keep by your side for inspiration and support. Which is what makes Nada Surf a truly beloved band.

Swedish sisters First Aid Kit have gone from faraway teenage fans covering Fleet Foxes for fun to recording a Blue Series 7-Inch single of Buffy Sainte- Marie’s “Universal Soldier” with Jack White in his Nashville, TN Third Man Studios. Originally signed by The Knifeowned label, Rabid Records, Wichita Recordings signed them in 2009 and released their debut LP “The Big Black and the Blue” in early 2010. Their sophomore album was recorded in spring 2011 in Omaha, NE produced by Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Jenny Lewis, Monsters of Folk). From the dynamic title track onwards, the sophomore album is a rich and stirring affair that expands upon the keen and sophisticated country tinged pop of their critically acclaimed debut. The Lion’s Roar is a full band record, the girls’ father Benkt takes the bass, Mattias Bergqvist drums, while Mogis and Nate Walcott of Bright Eyes, and a cast of Omaha-based musicians round out the sound. Album closer, ‘King of the World’ features The Felice Brothers, just passing through town during the session, and local hero Conor Oberst, who sings the last verse. P ROMo: Single serviced to Modern Rock Specialty, Non-Comm AAA, College formats in mid November. KCRW “Morning Becomes Eclectic”, WFUV “The Alternative Side” as well as other in-studio sessions performed around fall touring. Gonjasufi’s sonic appeal is not based on one single emotion. It’s one man’s soul poured out via a sound, an outlet. Each song is wrapped in it’s own sense of being, every single feeling is intertwined within his lyrics. MU.ZZ.LE although short in length, is long on message - political, social and spiritual interpretations that define him as an artist. Written on the road, it was an outlet for Gonjasufi to challenge himself. It’s the response to all the adrenaline, aggression and anger he felt traveling the world, it’s a spectrum of his creativity and a testimony of how one man’s passion and determination is often misunderstood as anger. “There’s a duality that exists and to deny it, is the biggest mistake”. The albums down tempo strings, heartbreaking soul, reanimated hip-hop and crackling haunting vocal stylings are stitched as a running thread throughout each song like a patchwork quilt. It’s a lonely journey that will take you through the innermost thoughts of Gonjasufi’s darkest hours. He recorded and mixed it on his own in his home studio surrounded by his family and the stark contrast of the Mojave Desert. The end product is his outlet and realization for who he is, a way for him to feel comfortable in his own skin again. Akin to discovering a gramophone recording fraught with emotive compositions, it’s like finding that hidden gem, the one you can truly relate with. It’s the way of dealing with the issues of modern man; oppressed by power, freedom of speech, living your life by a book, dealing with the MU.ZZ.LE that’s firmly attached around your mouth.

"Pronounced "Bee Bee-men", this first-generation Sri Lankan American musician is pretty sure there's no one else in the world with his name. Even if there is, chances are no other Bhi Bhiman could write a song as cool and catchy as the Bay Area's Bhi Bhiman can." -SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
STREET DATE: 1/24/2012
Bhi Bhiman is an American original, and yet he seems transported from an era when songs were more important than the pretty faces that delivered them. His rich, bellowing tenor can soothe or explode at a moment’s notice. His lived-in, knowing delivery belies his years. His songwriting, too, is quick to captivate. Bhi’s mix of humor and deep empathy puts him in the company of distinguished (and much older) lifelong songsmiths like John Prine, Nick Lowe and Randy Newman. And Bhiman’s technical, emotive guitar playing rises to the challenge that his striking voice presents. It’s fitting, then, that there truly is—as far as anyone can tell—only one Bhi Bhiman. His parents, emigrants from Sri Lanka, named the songwriter after Bhima, a central character in an ancient Indian text called The Mahabharata. But Bhiman’s own American experience was markedly less exotic than his name would imply—he came of age in the ‘90s in St. Louis, reared on Soundgarden and Nirvana, and later relocated to the Bay Area, where he lives today. His forthcoming album, BHIMAN, was recorded at John Vanderslice’s famed analog studio, Tiny Telephone. He completed the album with producer Sam Kassirer (Josh Ritter, Langhorne Slim) at The Great North Sound Society; an 18th century farmhouse in Parsonsfield, ME. Together, they created a deep, layered record that is urgent enough to grab new listeners and deep enough to keep them coming back to hear the subtle, soulful shifts in both instrumentation and that powerful human voice. LAURA GIBSON LA GRANDE
bark121 CD
STREET DATE: JANUARY 24, 2012
La Grande (pronounced in the way of the American West, without any hint of French inflection – “luh grand”) is a town just east of the Wallowa Valley in northeastern Oregon where native Oregonian Laura Gibson found inspiration while writing the songs that would become her new album of the same name. Gibson describes La Grande as a place that “people usually pass through on their way to somewhere else, but which contains a certain gravity, a curious energy.” She’s done more than her own fair share of traveling, playing over 200 shows in North America, Europe and Asia since the release of 2009’s acclaimed Beasts of Seasons (Hush Records), and La Grande is, in part, an album about journeys and transitions.
TRACKLISTING 1. La Grande 2. Milk-Heavy, Pollen-Eyed 3. Lion/Lamb 4. Skin, Warming Skin 5. The Rushing Dark 6. Red Moon 7. Crow/Swallow 8. The Fire 9. Time Is Not 10. Feather Lungs
The energy of the title track kicks off the record with a battering ram beat, hitting the ground like a herd of galloping horses. With the Tropicalia pulse, dirt-kicking distortion, whimsical woodwinds and heart murmur hooks on “Lion/Lamb,” and rail-jumping rhythms, majestic melodies and beyond-the-grave broadcasting of “The Rushing Dark,” La Grande plays like an imaginary film score. It’s an album about strength and confidence – about the tension between wildness and domesticity and the courage required to embark upon either path, about asserting one’s will rather than submitting – and it’s a significant departure from Beasts’ subtle meditations on frailty.

Gibson remained in the producer’s chair throughout its making, bouncing between home-recorded vocal sessions – piling as many as 15 Laura Gibsons on certain tracks – and proper takes at Type Foundry Studios alongside engineer and good friend Adam Selzer (M Ward, Norfolk and Western) and some great players, some of whose names are dropped below. Don’t get the wrong idea, though. While La Grande’s stage is shared with some very special guests, Gibson is at the center of every last note; contributing bits of bass, guitar, piano, pump organ, vibraphone, synthesizer, marimba, even a marching drum. The result is richer and more revealing than any of her previous records – but it never loses sight of her start as a young singer-songwriter who felt more at home playing in an AIDS hospice (where she had a standing weekly gig for two years) than in Portland’s vibrant (and at the time, overwhelming) indie music scene. Gibson’s previous work was praised for its timelessness, for the almost vintage quality of her voice. But of course her art and outlook aren’t solely influenced by the past. “I am someone who loves old things and could easily dwell in nostalgia,” she explains, “but I really felt this needed to be a statement about the future – about moving forward fearlessly – and I think the process of making the record and the finished album reflect that desire.” As Gibson sings on the ninth track of La Grande, “Time is not against us.” MARKETING NOTES • Laura has performed 200 shows headlining and supporting the likes of Colin Meloy and Damien Jurado since her critically acclaimed 2009 release Beast of Seasons. • Our team also includes Distiller Promotion for college radio and Tell All Your Friends PR for press. Laura’s previous album made NPR’s Best Albums of the Year list, and we expect great coverage from press and radio for this incredible album. • Guest performers on La Grande include Joey Burns (Calexico), Nate Query & Jenny Conlee (The Decemberists), and Meric Long & Logan Kroeber (the Dodos). • Laura’s first tour in support of the record starts on release day. She is interested in performing in-stores in tour markets and also towns along the routing. Posters and in-store play copies will be delivered by your friends at Flea or your favorite Redeye sales representative.

FALL LIKE RAIN
FALL LIKE RAIN — Martin Sexton’s brand-new EP finds this artist again asking relevant questions and challenging the status quo. Entertaining us all the while, he continues to call for unity in “One Voice Together” and adds: “In a world of warfare, peace is bad for business . . .” A timely cover of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” reminds us it’s time to “stop, hey, what’s that sound, everybody look what’s going down.” On this record, the artist subtly and seamlessly blends infectious tunes with a powerful message.
STREET DATE: JAN 24, 2012
His “soul-marinated voice” (Rolling Stone) shimmers on the soaring falsetto on the title track: “I wanna feel, I wanna fall like rain, without the shelter, so I can see which way the wind is blowin’ today.” Why an EP? Sexton says, “These songs are relevant today and I didn’t want to wait to release a full-length album. And in a down economy, we’re getting new music to people for the price of a soy latte.” HIGHLIGHTS • • • • • • •

Making It is the first new album by Stew
& The Negro Problem, the collaborative partnership that is Stew and Heidi Rodewald, since Passing Strange, their Tony award winning play turned Spike Lee Joint. Making It is also the first release on the new Tight Natural Productions (TNP) label formed by Stew and Heidi which will feature their new projects as well as re-releases of their back catalog, some of which has been out of print for some time now. Over the course of nine albums, while Stew’s concerned himself with making art, making love and making peace with all of it, Heidi’s co-composed and vocalized the push-pull, down-bound yet supersonic melodies that largely characterized the Negro Problem. But her notations to the songs on Making It are perhaps that much sweeter because of the resistance she initially brought to the project.
“I didn’t want to do this record,” she admits. But when she heard a bit of her own truth in the climactic “Leave Believe,” she says, “We decided that I should be involved — that I’d tell Stew what lyrics he should write for me.” The new twist on the creative process was especially gratifying for Heidi, while Stew gave and took what he needed from it too. “Stew said Making It was like his ‘therapy’ and I told him that therapy only works if you tell the truth.” The resulting song, “Therapy Only Works If You Tell The Truth,” is as bare-naked as it is straight/no chaser rock ’n ’roll. we put out always show where we are at the time,” says Heidi. “This collection of songs is filled with inaccuracies and that is absolutely accurate in describing our lives during that rough period. The inaccuracies are what make it that much more accurate.” Stew counters with the facts (as he sees them). “It’s a fact that we broke up during Passing Strange and we had to be in a play for two years together which was pretty intense and largely Making It is about that — not every song, but most of it . . .” But it’s where the two get together that things start to get interesting . . . Call it love or call it art, fact or fiction, whatever it is or isn’t, Making It is an affirmation of Stew and Heidi’s trip as they shift gears, passing — quite naturally — into the next phase.

Overview
Artist: Leila Title: U&I
Leila has already released three albums, a trilogy if you will.
1.24.12 WARPCD220 / WARPLP220
In 2009 she started to write a body of work that felt different. Maybe it was being sober, but this one seemed to be about being more direct. Leila first met Mt. Sims at a fancy dress party way back in 2006. Leila went as Leila. Mt. Sims dressed as a Computer Processing Unit fashioned from a cardboard box with strategically placed slits. She had admired his music since his work on Gigolo Records, she was most happy when he introduced himself and said he was a fan. Fast-Forward to 2009, Leila decided the man who had dressed as a CPU was the perfect voice for this new body of work. ‘In Consideration’ was made within two hours of him arriving at her home studio, when it comes to noise she doesn’t like to waste any time. Then came an intense period of sonic interactions. ‘Welcome To Your Life’ was particularly fun in it’s inception. Backing track pretty complete, as Leila watched Countdown Mt. Sims casually wrote a song… Leila liked it a lot. Two visits and some A Capella posting via Dropbox later (both “Anyway” and “U&I” were done the day Leila received the acapellas), The album was complete. Leila does enjoy watching the TV a lot but is also rather prolific. Then she just needed to stitch these and some carefully chosen instrumentals from her arsenal to complete this new story. The title was a difficult call, Celine Dion… The Pierces …The Gaga Leila says “Fuck It”, in aesthetics she doesn’t care about the what, how or why. Both intimate and universal, personal yet detached ‘U&I’ would be the name. The artwork is a picture taken of a very special computer crash revealing its internal architecture. Like an imaginary moment when you can look at a human being and see their organs and bones rather than the layers of veneer- Harsh but true.

Artist: My Best Fiend Title: Higher Palms
1.24.2012
“[My Best Fiend’s initial tracks] suggests this band has some major talent bubbling up to the surface. Cracking Eggs and O.D.V.I.P. both offer some tasty Explosions In The Sky-like flourishs, but the gentle unassuming title track ... steals the show” - My Old Kentucky Blog New York five-piece My Best Fiend deal in epic, hypnotic melodies that cross the emotional and experiential spectrums. The band's current incarnation was formed in 2009, and since then, they’ve been winning over audiences with their live sound and dynamic performances. “Higher Palms” is a mesmerizing new track, not designed to shrink into the background, with each note, chord and vocal demanding your full attention. The 7” is backed with a remix from new jack Young Montana (Alpha Pup) who’s fresh off anπ acclaimed debut LP, giving MBF his beat chop style on a hypercolor canvas, saturated with soul and lit with innovation.

DESCRIPTIVE TEXT _________________________________________________________ In our current climate of exponentially expanding micro-genres and sub-sub-niches, we're usually only a few mouse clicks away from finding or assigning a particular tag to any given musical artist. In instances when a group or solo musician seems to have hit upon a sound that hasn't already been neatly classified, it seems there's a whole host of anxious internetters just waiting to cobble together a set of hyphenated words to quickly solidify the identity of the unruly artist. Though both Pyramids and Horseback have existed now for what seems like eons by modern standards (you know, at least three or more years), astonishingly neither has been saddled with a lasting classification for the sounds they make. Whether this is due to their constantly shifting approach to compositional technique with each successive release, their fluctuating membership, or simply the fact that they’re not borrowing exclusively from any one source, it seems one thing is certain: both have succeeded in making music that is singularly their own, while also possessing a deeply affective humanity, initially alienating though it might appear. Now that these two entities have combined forces for "A Throne Without a King", a new set of questions is raised through its realization. Firstly, is it a split or a collaboration? Well, it's both the album includes one new song from each individual group, as well as a long-form collaborative piece involving all personnel from Horseback and Pyramids playing together. Over the course of the three tracks that comprise the set the music ranges through territories of frenzied blasting, sonorous melody, arrhythmic clattering, frenetic riffing, frozen howls, and uneasy quiet. Horseback offers up the most recognizably structured piece of the three, a scabrous black metal weave, threaded through with a distinctly American twang. On their solo adventure Pyramids force together incongruent bits of hammering drum machine, screeching metallic textures and harmonious snippets of spacious piano into one implausibly seamless whole. Strong as the preceding pieces are, it is the massive forty five minute collaborative piece that is really the centerpiece of the entire project - a sprawling mass of sonic moss, mud, concrete and galvanic crackle. Incorporating harsh electronics, buzzing swaths of guitar, low pulsing drones, improvised percussion and spectral voices issued from a distant universe, the "song" is a perfect synthesis of the diverse musical personalities involved in its creation. Though it could be inaptly described as any number of wildly different types of music, like the parent groups that have channeled its chaotic essence into a tangible living form, it is a beast of unique nature - at once beguiling, terrifying and completely immersive. A more successful pairing of experimental-metal-drone-ambient-krautish-noise-rock collaborators you are unlikely to find, in our reality or any of its parallel relatives. “Choice Press Quotes” _______________________________________________________________________ "Pyramids/Horseback’s creation is a near seem-less bonding of crackling, dystopian drone, and the reverb filled, melting-ice yawn of shoegaze." - Foxy Digitalis 9/10

What is the true mark of the wayward genius of Wiley? Is it that, less than six months after the release of his last full album, “100% Publishing,” he has another record all set for release? Is it that he has insisted that it is released on his birthday, Thursday January 19th 2012? Or that he initially refused to release a single from it? That he has made so much music that his fans will receive two CDs, the second with at least eight further tracks on it? Or even that one track on the album has no music (“Customs”)? No, it’s not any of these. It’s that we can say, without fear of contradiction (or without much fear), that “Evolve Or Be Extinct” is the best album (so far!) of this unique artist’s career. Dark, funny, wild and exhilarating, this is a record which shows just what Wiley is capable of when he forgets the minutiae of recording contracts and concentrates on the many weird and wonderful facets of his life... So here is an album which covers topics from ordering a taxi, being stopped by immigration, to dancing on your own in your bedroom. It also delves into the psyche of Richard Cowie on tracks ranging from “Weirdo” (“I’m a weirdo but I’m not a bi-polar”) to “Miss You” and “Scar” (in reference to the cut on his face). While most of the music again comes from Wiley the latter track, along with “Money Man,” is produced by Mark Pritchard. Wiley himself turns in exemplary music throughout, from the hyped punk-grime of the title track, through the soca-swing of “Miss You” to the sparse drip-crunk of “This Is Just An Album.” And all that’s before you get to the bounce of singles “Link Up” and “Boom Blast.” Wiley has never made a record which reveals so much of his character, his contradictions and inner workings, his humour as well as his anger. A short, sharp, brilliant album, it shows Wiley as more than Godfather to a scene and penner of occasional hits, but as an artist who continues to develop, refine and improve his vision even after ten turbulent years in the game. The evolution continues...

In early 2011 Luke Vibert (who happened to be bringing to Ninja Tune HQ cushions designed like 808 drum machines as a present!) said that he had just found some, longlost never heard before DATs dated "1995-1998" and entitled "Plug". This we are sure will bring bearded pogoing type excitement for many of you but for those that doesn't happen too here's a quick recap.... In 1996 Blue Angel Recordings (later Blue Planet) an imprint of the legendary Rising High label released the "Drum 'N' Bass for Papa" album by Plug AKA West Country king of kitschtronica Luke Vibert, whom at that time had only released under his Wagon Christ moniker. The album cover was an old picture of his professional magician grandfather Frank which only added to the oddness in the best of ways. The album was largely ignored by the D'n'B purists at the time, however it was hailed by many beyond, and remains to this day one of the acclaimed records to emerge from the buoyant and hugely influential electronic scene of the south-west in the 90's. Alongside people like Aphex Twin, Tom Middleton, Grant Wilson-Claridge and Jeremy Simmonds and away from the lights and police of the big cities they put on club nights, filled cassettes with new tunes, hijacked the pirates and revelled in all that was original, twisted and like nothing else before. And whilst there is no doubting the talent of all these individuals, it has always been Vibert's keen sense of humour and also funk that enabled him to evolve to a stage to make a landmark release such as "Drum 'N' Bass for Papa". So a few years later and somewhat ahead of the curve,Vibert shook up D'n'B - at that point no album had been released in the genre that departed from the formulaic template. Avant-jungle that wasn't made for the "club", the album was an eccentric bolt from the blue, it shocked many of Vibert's contemporaries but went on to influence many, most notably Squarepusher. At the same time Luke's Wagon Christ project was being snapped up by Chemical Brothers A+R man at Virgin Records for his 3rd album, so a new name was needed for his eccentric d'n'b output, and Plug was born. Until now Plug has yielded just one album - possibly only a humble man like Luke Vibert would have a whole album of top-quality electronic tracks just sat around for over 15 years and not release them. The 10 tracks on offer here include the proto-garage vocal stylings of "Feeling So Special", the demented circus-organs of "No Reality" , the hilariously titled "Come On My Skeleton", the old-skool rinse out of "Mind Bending", the skewed bollywoodisms of "A Quick Plug for A New Shot" and all with impeccably produced jungle credentials as the bed. Sounding brand new as well as being a lost classic from a electronic icon, "Back On Time" is a release that anybody interested in the progression of dance music should be very curious to hear and enjoy.

The Apples in stereo
Fun Trick Noisemaker Street Date: 01.24.12
Upon its original release in the Spring of 1995, All Music Guide called The Apples in stereo’s debut full length “one of those records that marks a sea change in musical attitudes.” Fun Trick Noisemaker facilitated such a shift by moving the focus away from the sullen negativity of the grunge era, towards a sunnier, more psychedelic vision of rock music. As one of the flagship members of the famed Elephant 6 Collective (in fact, Fun Trick Noisemaker was the first album released from the collective), The Apples in stereo spearheaded a seismic shift in indie-rock consciousness towards a more optimistic worldview. Their recordings echoed and helped revive interest in the likes of Brian Wilson, Van Dyke Parks, Arthur Lee, Syd Barrett and even Burt Bacharach as cool names to drop in hipster circles. Fun Trick Noisemaker was the first full-length installment in the musical journey that has grown out of frontman Robert Schneider’s infatuation with recording techniques; ranging from four-track bedroom recordings to100-track studio experiments, to creating new musical scales and mind-controlled synthesizers. Not to mention his ongoing obsession with writing the perfect pop song, a song “that even little kids or your grandparents can sing along with,” as Schneider put it at the time. That creative journey continues until this day. But more than just a starting point, Fun Trick Noisemaker stands on its own today as a masterpiece in the indie rock canon, featuring some of the band's most loved and indelible tracks such as: "Green Machine"; "Glow Worm" and "Tidal Wave" (featuring one of the most rip roaring lead guitar lines ever put to wax.) Yep Roc Records is proud to reissue Fun Trick Noisemaker on vinyl in January 2012. These magical tunes seem somehow destined to spin on vinyl, not only as a nod towards the classic artists who inspired their creation, but because even in 1995 The Apples in stereo considered vinyl to be the official medium of release. This special reissue incorporates all of the original artwork and liner notes, with rephotographed paintings by Steve Keene, including a four-color poster insert. The Apples in stereo will embark in March 2012 (3/9-3/11) to perform at the All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival (curated by Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel) at Butlins, Minehead, UK. Cheyenne Marie Mize We Don't Need
NATIONAL release date: 01.24.2011 Cheyenne Marie Mize subtly eludes the traditional singer-songwriter formulae with the release of We Don't Need on January 24th, 2012 on Yep Roc Records. Mize’s debut LP, Before Lately (which The New York Times described as “sweet without being cloying, weary without hopelessness,”) was a slow-burning, introspective, meditative affair. We Don’t Need offers an expansion of the sonic palette she’s established – with more dynamic moods, instrumentation, and experimentation. Mize wants listeners to know that "the songs on We Don't Need are meant to be digested individually more than as continuous parts of a complete whole. Each has its own character and will likely be enjoyed in different mental states. As a whole, We Don't Need is surely eclectic, but each part gives a little taste of the things to come..." Indeed, We Don’t Need does not fit easily into a box. The record does work as a whole, though, thanks to the one constant winding its way through this varied landscape. Lending cohesion to the We Don’t Need’s sonic kaleidoscope is a voice that Daytrotter described as “a tone that allows you to stretch your head back to that last great and true love that you experienced - the best form of it that ever came your way - and feel as if it never left.” Cheyenne Marie Mize introduced herself internationally on the 10" release Among the Gold with Bonnie “Prince” Billy – an inventive take on a variety of late 19th century American parlor music handpicked by Mize and Oldham. She continued her alliance with Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore as a major player in the Dear Companion tour supporting their collaborative Sub Pop release in early 2010. After the release of her debut later that year and subsequent performances at South By Southwest, Mize was chosen by NPR as one of their ten “Discoveries at SXSW 2011.” Cheyenne and her band plan to hit the road for extensive touring in early 2012 leading up to a return engagement at SXSW, and well into the spring and early summer. Press: Ever Kipp at Tiny Human (www.tinyhuman.com) will be working both national and regional/tour press. Full servicing of We Don't Need is already underway and the response has been fantastic. RADIO: Ronda Chollock at Insubordinate Media (www.insubordinatemedia.com) will be working We Don't Need to TripleA non-com and top tier CMJ reporters. "Wishing Well" will be the focus track at radio. VIDEO: "Wishing Well" video will be available in early January and will be promoted heavily through VEVO, as well as all other relevant video channels. TOUR: Cheyenne will be touring extensively throughout the first 6 months of 2012 with both headlining and opening gigs being booked. Headlining gigs are slotted in Chicago, Louisville, Lexington, and Bloomington, IN week of release. Cheyenne is booked by Mary Brabec at The Billions Corp (www.billions.com) TRACK LISTING: 01. 18 years after the release of their landmark self-titled debut, Cardinal – the recording collaboration between Richard Davies and Eric Matthews – are preparing to unveil their long awaited new album. The new record, entitled Hymns, picks up where their debut left off – well-crafted, layered orchestral pop, with Matthews' multi-instrumental talents enhancing Davies' sublime songwriting gems. Hymns comprises ten new originals, another milestone in the band’s quest to provide the missing link in chamber pop history, following the Beatles and Bee Gees and before Belle & Sebastian, and a worthy follow up to their self-titled debut, a record lauded then, and now, as one of the most important albums of the 90s. Ushering in an era of appreciation for the orchestrated pop music the 1960s, with a modern approach, Cardinal’s debut opus, originally released in 1994, seemed to come out of nowhere with it’s layered textures and delightful melodies, swimming against the tidal wave of grunge. The record would achieve deafening acclaim, and impact other artists even to this day. But as influential and significant as Cardinal seemed, their musical output totalled that lone, brilliant self-titled record, as Matthews moved home to the West Coast while Davies remained out East. The two embarked on individual solo careers, Davies remaining on Flydaddy, home to the Cardinal album, and Matthews on Sub Pop, and soon many, many years had passed. Miraculously though, what may have seemed to be the end of the story, was not the closing chapter for Cardinal. A reconnection between the two musicians - an on-again/off-again chronicle of creating new music - a bi-coastal recording process – took hold. Finally completed in 2011, what was thought to be a pipe dream, and an object that is sure to elicit delight from both musicians and music fans alike, a new album Hymns. Hymns signals a new beginning for Cardinal, signing to storied independent label Fire Records – in fact, also originally home to the last album from Davies pre-Cardinal outfit, The Moles. Hymns combines self-assured and pious pop gems ("Northern Soul") with immense-canvas outback masterworks ("Kal"), and improbably, hot-blooded essays on the first law case Davies ever read ("Carbolic Smoke Ball"). Like the first album a lifetime ago, Hymns is a set of diamonds. Great songs – actually, plainold-fashioned good songs, filtered through Davies’ John Donne/Sir John Mortimer law/art prism, and Matthews’ trained arranger’s ear. The two are perfectly matched. It is clear that, once again they spur each other on to greater heights. Guitars, vocals, horns and strings, bass, along with the weird, are used with invention, purpose, and confidence. When Cardinal was released in 1994 they were arguably the best band in the world. In 2012 with Hymns they are well positioned for a repeat performance. Track Listing : 1. Northern Soul 2. Hailing from ‘The Magic City’ of Birmingham, Alabama the Primitons were active from 1985-1989. It was an era of the so-called emerging ‘Southern Alternative’ scene and the band often found themselves lumped in with other peers such as: R.E.M., Let’s Active, the dB’s and Guadalcanal Diary. However, one listen to this career-spanning reissue will unveil a truly unique band. The Primitons featured guitarist/vocalist Mats Roden and drummer/accordionist Leif Bondarenko, both former members of Jim Bob & the Leisure Suits. They were joined by guitarist Brad Dorset (replaced by bassist Don Tinsley for the second release) and lyricist Stephanie Truelove Wright. Even though the the band received critical acclaim in both the U.S. and U.K. usual troubles with record labels folding, lackluster production, illfated tours and dismal marketing kept the Primitons from becoming the household name they so deserved to be. EMOTIONAL A STEVE SCOTT TOURIST: RETROSPECTIVE STREET DATE: 01/24/2012 Even by cult-musician standards, Steve Scott has had a unique career. Since the 1970s, the London-born singer, songwriter, poet, spoken word artist, lecturer, essayist, filmmaker and world traveler has worked on the fringes of the fringe, his output remaining relatively little known even to those who would seem to be the natural audience for his work. His iconoclastic approach and adventurous musical explorations mark him as an outsider. Despite his relative obscurity, those familiar with Scott’s singular oeuvre are well aware of his status as a one-of-a-kind visionary. His expansive, evocative lyrics are supported by music that’s alternately rocking and dreamily atmospheric, often venturing successfully into exotic stylistic territory. Meanwhile, he’s consistently expanded his sonic palette to incorporate new sounds, rhythms and technological advances. This remarkable collection drawn from various recordings throughout Scott’s career makes a persuasive case for his status as a true original. Ex-Ex-Expat Florida rapper bleubird returned to the States after a few years of foreign grind and took to the road. He began crafting an album with fellow road warrior Andy Bothwell aka Astronautails with the goal of venturing both of them into some new territory. If Andy is the Tom Waits of hip hop, bird is the Iggy Pop. In the dead of winter, they locked themselves in Bothwell's Seattle basement studio and fought through their differences to create something neither of them could say was uniquely their own. In the end, the two called upon the help of Jacksonville pop prodigy, Radical Face, to pull everything together musically and apply his signature gritty shine. By taking a leap of faith with his friends, CANNONBALL!!! is bleubird's most clear and cohesive album to date. PRESS QUOTES

Harrisonburg, VA’s Gifts From Enola offer up two razor sharp, hardcore-tinged, post-something rippers, pushing forward hard on the evolution of their sound from the critically acclaimed self-titled 2010 full length that included “touches of Thrice’s well structured post-hardcore, Tortoise’s experimental side and even a little Fugazi thrown in for good measure” according to Decibel Magazine and that Lambgoat called a “gorgeous kaleidoscope of guitar playing and overall musicianship”. Meanwhile, Las Vegas, NV natives in Caravels continue to push their multi-textured brand of emotive hardcore into new and unexplored territory. And for a band “already on the cusp of greatness” as Punk News proclaimed, it’s impossible to listen to these songs and not believe that they have lived up to that hype with these three tracks - their newest hybrids of old school screamo blended seamlessly with layered post-rock elements. Sure, there is a lot of screaming and yelling, and a lot of loud guitars and drums, and an overall aggressive tone to the body of work on this split, but the only absolute and true over riding common denominator is that both bands effortlessly defy easy classification, making this split both as challenging and as rewarding as they come.
STREET DATE: 1/24/12 Artist: Gifts From Enola/Caravels Title: Split 12” Track List: Side A - Caravels 1. Sagan Genesis [4:31] 2. Beer Pressure [4:12] 3. Bone Voyage [4:56]

Mastering duties were handled by Carl Saff (Grails, Young Widows, Tiny Vipers, The Black Heart Procession), with artwork handled by Charlie Wagers at Three Bears Design (mewithoutYou, Unwed Sailor, The Fray, Caspian). The album is set for a vinyl and digital release on January 24th, 2012 via Topshelf Records and The Mylene Sheath, respectively. Expo 70
Journey Through Astral Projection Justin Wright’s Expo 70 project has been pushing experimental, drone and Kosmiche Musik to new realms for nearly a decade now. Constant touring and a string of critically acclaimed albums released on labels such as Kill Shaman, Beta-lactam Ring, Peasant Magik, Aguirre, and Wright’s own Sonic Meditations label have clearly brought Expo 70’s name to the forefront of modern drone and Kosmiche Musik. In the Fall of 2010 Immune released the epic double LP Where Does Your Mind Go? to critical acclaim and Expo 70 toured the country for two months in support. Immune is now proud to present the follow-up album Journey Through Astral Projection, further cementing the fact that Wright’s work captures a true spirit of free thinking and creates tranquil moods and vast landscapes in audio fidelity.

SALES POINTS Journey Through Astral Projection is the new Expo 70 studio album that follows the breakthrough album Where Does Your Mind Go? (Immune 011, Nov 2010) and was again recorded at Black Dirt Studios by Jason Meagher (No Neck Blues Band, D. Charles Speer & The Helix) Justin Wright’s Expo 70 project has been pushing experimental, drone and Kosmiche Musik to new realms for nearly a decade now The CD is presented in a heavy stock 4 panel mini-LP style gatefold package limited to only 500 copies. Expo 70 releases sell out notoriously fast so do not delay on this limited CD release Also available from Expo 70 : Where Does Your Mind Go? 2xLP (Immune 011)
Journey Through Astral Projection features four long form tracks recorded at Black Dirt Studios by Jason Meagher during the same sessions that captured 2010’s breakthrough release Where Does Your Mind Go? (Immune 011, Nov 2010). The album again features Justin Wright on guitar, Realistic Moog and Crumar and then collaborator Matt Hill (Umberto) on bass, analog drum machine, Crumar and Korg. The album’s four tracks continue the explorations started on Where Does Your Mind Go? dropping you back into the same brooding and moody realms with pulsing analog drum rhythms and looped guitar notes furthering the previous album’s playful krautrock tendencies. By the second track the gates open into a bed of dense organ tones and heavy guitar dirges, resembling a more meditative Terry Riley jamming with Sunn O))). Having been culled from the same sessions as Where Does Your Mind Go?, Journey Through Astral Projection should be viewed as a companion album, but also an album fit to stand on it’s own ground. Praise for Expo 70 & Where Does Your Mind Go? : “Each track is a perfect balance between textured drone and evolving melodic themes. This poise brings an austere economy to the compositions. Everything has a purpose, nothing is merely gesture… Expo 70 are on their way to becoming part of the Kosmiche pantheon.” – The Wire “An utterly absorbing and time-dilating double LP of masterful synth music from one of the scene’s most prolific and respected sons, Expo 70″ - Boomkat “four sprawling smoldering tracks of galaxian space drone mesmer spread out over four vinyl sides…epic and fantastic” - Aquarius “Expo ‘70 has truly captured the ethereal wonder of modern kosmiche, taking the reigns with deft precision from Schulze and co. and working calm pools of sound into tapestries of astral vibration. But unlike the 70’s set Wright’s sense of the cosmos is never all serene, it’s rife with the unknown and a sense of otherworldly unease; and this is what moves him far beyond his influences and into the pantheon of cosmic masters.” - Raven Sings the Blues

Rhyton Rhyton
Thrill - 288 Limited CD $14.99 BOX LOT CD 30 CD is non-returnable
Limted LP $16.99 BOX LOT LP 25 Vinyl is non-returnable Rhyton pours out a sonic libation unto the liberated world. Waveforms ring out, alternately frozen and blazing, wrenched from an improvisational method. They seek to loosen the gaze so as to widen focus, taking the unity in hand, not grabbing for the micro-constituent. Using the dynamic levels of rock, Rhyton carve out an edifice of sound on their debut LP that centers upon repetition and modal excursion. Recorded and mixed by Jason Meagher at his Black Dirt Studio, this self-titled release is culled from a highly fruitful 3 day recording session. Seeking to capture the cutting intensity level of their live performances, the band takes the ethos of full engagement. The multiple amp setup at hand in the studio helps imbue the ear with “second hearing”. The split stereo, dual amped electric leads utilized throughout the record are best experienced on tracks like “Pontian Grave” and “Teké” where phase and tremolo patterns bounce and surge from ear to ear, warping senses of both time and space. These two distinct sound sources are a manifestation of dual perspectives derived from a single emanation: this is not the fracturing of a voice, but rather its multiplying into a unified but complimentary chorale as different delay lengths and distortion levels cohere into an ensemble greater than its parts. On “Dale Odalíski” the rock trio trappings are stripped away as a booming tom tom, oscillators and delay loops evoke a kind technological primitivism that seems akin to a message from a shattered, distant future. Extreme attention to auditory detail is apparent throughout the album, as blasts of varied gain stages writhe within fields of phased cymbals and bass throbs. Taken from repose to ekstasis - as mental impulse reigns above, so the body below records. Rhyton is a band with an organic genesis, born from late night rap sessions at a local Brooklyn watering hole. Heads of certain vibe gathered together to tap into the underlying flux form of transportational music. Dave Shuford (D. Charles Speer, No Neck Blues Band) had been knee deep in research and practice in the realm of middle eastern musics during the recording of his solo LP Arghiledes (Thrill 263, April 2011). From that album, the track “The Heavy Heart of Ando-Yeap” was used as a leaping off point for the gestation of Rhyton. Shuford brought his personal selection of varied string instruments to the table, seeking to create a heavier electric syntax for mandolin, saz and baritone guitar. Jimy SeiTang (Psychic Ills) emerged as a sonic surgeon, creating wave patterns with his bass and pulses of tape delay tales. Spencer Herbst (Messages, Matta Llama) injected his flowing, highly energetic style of percussion and brought in visual conundrums by way of videocassette. An instant near-telepathic bond was established, making improvisations seem like composed forays even to the closest confidants. With variants and heads situated as a point of departure, Rhyton explores the inner workings of the ear and seeks the latent brain bulge within the listener.

Imbogodom’s And They Turned Not When They Went sees Alexander Tucker and Daniel Beban return to the BBC’s Bush House for another nocturnal collection of pure analogue tape work. Here the musique concrete worlds are more defined than on 2010’s The Metallic Year. Using live feeds from the Houses of Parliament’s bell Big Ben, Tucker and Beban create foreboding landscapes for obscure horror soundtracks where foley techniques of everyday objects turn into threatening phone calls from poltergeist entities trapped inside the warm mixing desk and dusty tape machines. Stretched, slowed, and warped source material takes us back to early electronic synthesis of magnetic tape whilst reveling in the endless possibilities thrown up from processes of analogue experimentation.

*90377-ACJGBb
GENRE : EXPERIMENTAL FILE UNDER: “Z” Zomes “L” Lungfish Asa Osborne’s solo guise, Zomes, is the penultimate exercise in the study of repetition and meditative repose. Simple melodic keyboard patterns overlay primitive drum loops. The repetitive quality is both remindful of much in the oriental music tradition as well as Osborne’s guitar work in Lungfish. Patterns emerge and disintegrate, spaces expand and contract, all in a cyclic pattern that is by nature fixed and by design capable of transporting the listener to otherworldly states. With Improvisations, Zomes second release for Thrill Jockey, the drum loops are replaced with a more obtuse drone bed pulsing not unlike a key on a harmonium that’s been taped down. The continually changing tones create a warm sea of sound that acts as a canvas for his melodic improvisations. Tonal transmissions that phase in and out of a thick drone-filled ether, captured, translated, and expressed in Zomes own unique language of meditative bliss. Improvisations, recorded on a cassette tape, also comes on the heels of the critically acclaimed and equally simply recorded Earth Grid. In addition to touring in North American and Europe, Asa recently joined a tour with The Skull Defekts and his old Lungfish foil, Daniel Higgs. The three ended up recording the Skull Defekts 12-inch 2013-3012 together during the tour. More extensive touring is on the horizon in 2012, as well as Zomes debut studio recording.

It is released on LP-only with an insert and free download coupon Zomes has been performing live throughout this year and Asa is also occasionally a member of The Skull Defekts both live and on record (see the 2013-3012 12”EP) “pulsing with meditative, repetitive synth patterns and dust caked drum loops. Earth Grid feels like a record that can hardly be split into parts, rather it’s two sides of disconnection from the grid via Osborne’s trance-like burial of his listeners in layer upon layer of square-wave foam.” - Raven Sings The Blues “minimal, distorted keyboard accompanied by sparse kick-drum hits creates a hypnotic, trance-inducing mood much like Lungfish did for so many years” - Washington City Paper

Breaking Day is the second full-length album from Cleared, the Chicago-based duo of Steven Hess and Michael Vallera. While their self-titled debut album (Immune 014, Jan 2011) found the duo exploring themes of stasis and texture, Breaking Day represents a huge development in the scope and overall style of the project. Where previous material had been slowly assembled from dozens of individual recordings and experiments, this new collection of songs was born from the raw documentation of Cleared’s live performance in the studio. Elements of noise, drone, and psychedelia are filtered through a dark, unifying lens that ranges from relentless rhythmic assault to monolithic tonal sculpture. Dueling rhythms of drums and sampled percussion, walls of undulating soundscapes, and hypnotic guitar are deployed with heightened intensity and force. If Cleared’s first record presented a frozen, gray-washed realm of ambient sound, Breaking Day represents its inverse: A blackened subterranean space of alien movement and activity; a premonition of an assault from the unknown. In addition to their work with Immune, Cleared has released music on Digitalis Limited and contributed to the Antiopic compilation, Benefit for the Recovery in Japan. Their self-titled debut album found comparisons ranging from This Heat to Wolfgang Voigt and Yellow Swans. Praised by Boomkat as one of the best albums released in 2011, Cleared became a template for the project’s unique combination of dissonance and fragile melodic undertones. Slowly building a reputation for an intense and immersive live show, Cleared have been privileged to share the stage with such artists as Radian, Ken Camden, Expo 70, and David Daniell. The band will embark on their first US tour in support of Breaking Day playing shows with Mind Over Mirrors (Digitalis) and Koen Holtkamp (Thrill Jockey). Praise for Cleared : “It is hard right now to add anything new to the so-called drone scene, but Cleared are fathoms deeper than the current crop of pseudo ambient non-releases. ‘Cleared’ is gritty and stunningly well-realized sound from two composers who know exactly what they’re doing and how to do it. An incredible record, and one of the best of the year so far.” - Boomkat “The five very evocative tracks here form an extraordinarily wellassembled set of slowly paced compositions—economical, natural, and diverse in a wintery kind of way…The tension between the industrial and the pastoral is a major strength of Cleared, a concept they’re clearly both familiar with and follow in a unique way here. Based on this album, it’s one very much worth pursuing.” - Foxy Digitalis, 8/10 “this record is all about the physicality and quality of sound; the rumble of stylus against vinyl or the hiss of tape against heads just adds another layer to an already laminal cake.” - Dusted Magazine

Ahmed’s brand new album With Endless Fire was entirely written, performed and recorded direct to analog tape by Ilyas Ahmed in Portland, OR. It is Ahmed’s first album since his 2009 release Goner (Root Strata) and continues the much fuller sound presented there, giving us his unmistakable voice with a mix of acoustic and electric guitars, harmonium, organ, and drums.
Ilyas Ahmed on With Endless Fire : “This record started out during an extended period of decline and gradually shifted focus to let more light in, to reconcile the murky depths and the ecstatic highs of everyday life. I wanted to make music that was “of” rather than “by”. It was the first time I felt there was no separation between head & hands, instruments & speakers, microphones & air, fuzz pedals & tape machines. The songs are inspired equally by memory, loss, love, and electricity.”
Praise for Ilyas Ahmed : “Ahmed’s sound is gorgeous and spare, simple and spacious, darkly emotional and sweetly mournful.” -Aquarius “It’s the music of wind-swept steppes, barren plains and snow-laden conifer trees. It’s primordial and yet forward-thinking, a music for all civilizations seen through one lost soul’s eyes. It’s timeless and hypnotic, challenging and emotionally pure. It’s essential, simple as.” - Julian Cope’s Head Heritage “delicate string work is more often ensconced in buzzing harmonic drones and draped under the call of his enchanting and chilling voice. The line between sinister and holy is definitely blurred through his music” - Raven Sings The Blues “a magical and heartbroken atmosphere as beautiful as it is forlorn.” - Boomkat “These are songs as empty vessels, formlessness defined, a Byzantine route to mood.” - Other Music
