OVERVIEW

George Evelyn was born and raised in inner city Leeds - a far cry from the Ibizan farmhouse where he currently resides. Heavily influenced by everything from Jazz and soul to dub and reggae, he first came to widespread attention in the late '80s / early '90s with bleep anthems 'Aftermath' and 'Dextrous'. It was the tripped out, hip-hop deconstructing Smokers Delight album - released in 1995 - that truly cemented his reputation though. This was followed up by the equally compelling Carboot Soul album released in 1999. Meanwhile, his most recent full-length Feelin' Good, released in 2013, is an album of sun-soaked jams that oozes summery euphoria. This year has seen N.O.W undertake a heavy world DJ tour and he’s just played out at the seventh and most successful Ibiza Wax Da Jam residency. Aside from travelling the world, George Evelyn has become increasingly inspired by a newer breed of artist including Soulection, Kaytranada, Loyle Carner as well as peers such as Moodyman, Andres and Karizma. This new found inspiration has led George to venture back into the studio and get back to the very foundations of Nightmares on Wax, creating the sounds that have made him an influential figure across the production community. This new EP is back to back dance floor jams, though somewhat a departure from his recent work. With this EP and more work back in the studio we're looking towards and exciting year for N.O.W and fans!

Having previously re-worked the Panda track ‘Community’, Berlin-resident Fort Romeau once again takes the reigns with a gorgeous, nine-minute pulsing, electroheavy recreation of the track ‘Time Eater’ complete with ghostly synth motifs that twirl around Japanese instrumentation culminating in a frenetic release. US producer John Roberts, who himself released one of the best deep house records of the year, remixes ‘Chiba Nights’, transforming it into a thumping, acid-tinged affair that mixes space and warped electronics beautifully. Finally, the contemplative ‘Song For A Dead Friend’ is taken on by Japanese musician Daisuke Tanabe, whose wide ranging musical influences of electronica, folk and jazz all come to bear on this track. Radically different to the two that run prior to it on the 12”, it’s more akin to the likes of Boards of Canada and Plaid, as it slowly ebbs to a wistful conclusion over three different musical phases.

SALES TEXT Bossa Nova = Nouvelle Vague = New Wave. This transliteration was the starting point for Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux’s unique project, which, by appropriating the punk and post-punk cannon and running it through the Bossa Nova filter, reinvented the cover band genre, revealing new and brilliant talents along the way: Camille, Phoebe Killdeer (whose Fade Out Lines was remixed by The Avener,) Nadeah, Mélanie Pain, and, soon, Liset Alea. The gambit paid off, with sales of over one million records over four albums released between 2004 and 2010, and world tours that included stops at venues such as London’s Royal Albert Hall, L.A.’s Hollywood Bowl and Paris’ Olympia. Since 2011, Nouvelle Vague had stopped recording, focusing on an innovative live show created in collaboration with the mythical Jean-Charles de Castelbajac (Ceremony and Dawn of innocence,) and branching out into different projects: Olivier’s Uncovered Queen of the Stone Age, and Marc’s Bristol, along with his Kwaidan label. The time seems right to write a new chapter in the Nouvelle Vague saga: with a new album “ I Could Be Happy” and live show, the band and its coterie of female vocalists continue their time travels with a renewed alegria. Nouvelle vague by Nouvelle Vague and Some Friends is thus more of a nexus of forthcoming projects: a new album comprised of punk and post punk standards imbued with the inimitable Nouvelle Vague touch, and, for the first time, a bevy of surprising Collin/Libaux which prove that the two producers are more than prodigious arrangers. This album is also the opportunity to gather again the pioneer singers of Nouvelle Vague: Élodie Frégé, Mélanie Pain, Liset Alea, Nadeah and to find other guests as Camille or Clara Luciani. A worldwide tour is already confirmed and announced. It will begin in Europe and Asia, in the fall, and will continue through South America and the U.S.A. in the new year, and feature the entire crew on stage, around Marc and Olivier: Mélanie Pain, Élodie Frégé, and Liset Alea.

There is also a host of rare cuts from a number of lesser-known second line New Orleans artists, whose fame rarely reached past the walls of the city, including Gus ‘The Groove’ Lewis, James K-Nine, Norma Jean, Bob French, Chuck Colbert, Zilla Mayes and Joe Haywood. In the 1960s the syncopated beat of New Orleans Funk developed out of a gumbo mix of New Orleans local flavours – rhythm and blues, Mardi Gras Indians, the street percussion Second Line of the Jazz Funeral and Marching bands, Caribbean rhumba and mambo rhythms – all of which are in full effect. Even Zydeco, the rhythm and blues offspring of Louisiana Cajun music, had the funk as the King of Zydeco, Clifton Chenier, shows us here. New Orleans music and Voodoo both have their roots in the African-American free black and slave gatherings held at Congo Square from the 18th century onwards. Here Voodoo king Doctor John (the original one!) and Voodoo queen Marie Levaux held court over their followers, and here also could be heard the first sounds of New Orleans jazz music. Soul Jazz Records’ latest album describes how these two cultural forms are inextricably inter-related.

The album traces the path of funk from the very first glimpses of the style – Dave Bartholomew’s super-tight ‘The Monkey’ (recorded in 1957) and James Waynes’ junkie jailbird anthem ‘Junco Partner’ (1951, later covered by Dr John, Professor Longhair, James Booker, and The Clash) through to the 1970s heavyweight boogie funk of Chocolate Milk’s rare groove classic Action Speak Louder Than Words and The Baron’s ‘Making It Better’.

Also featured is a selection of hard-core classic funk productions from the legendary Eddie Bo (James K-Nine, David Robinson) and the genius of Allen Toussaint (Eldridge Holmes, Gus ‘The Groove’ Lewis, Lou Johnson). There also a number of super-rare independent New Orleans’ one-off 45 single funk productions from the likes of Chick Colbert and Bob French. And lastly, New Orleans Funk female vocalists are in full effect with tracks by Betty Harris (whose ‘Lost Queen of New Orleans Soul’ has just come out on Soul Jazz Records), Zilla Mayes and Norma Jean.

Ninja Tune will release Jay Daniel’s debut album via their Technicolour imprint on 25th November 2016. Jay, now 25 years old, has become one of the leading artists in the latest generation of Detroit electronic music-makers. In the five years that he has been on the scene, he has released the “Scorpio Rising EP” on Theo Parrish's Sound Signature Records, “Karmatic Equations” on Kyle Hall's Wild Oats Music, and featured on Funkineven’s “Abyss”, all the while gighopping from New York to London, Japan to Australia and all points in between. In 2015, Jay took it to the next level with the foundation of his own record label Watusi High, releasing the inaugural EP: “School Dance”. "Broken Knowz" signals a departure from Jay’s previous output. Disillusioned with the constraints of drum programming and the associated deficiencies translating human feeling or emotion; he retreated to his mother’s basement, picked up his drumsticks and started recording into a multitrack mixer for the first time. This was key for Jay, as he knew he wanted the album to sound more live, more natural, and more human. Consequently, ‘Paradise Valley’, ‘Boolin’, ‘Yemaya’ and lead track ‘Knowledge Of Selfie’ are founded on loose-knit, shuffling breaks with Jay’s signature keyboard runs marauding over the top. Refreshingly exposed and overtly reliant on the sheer weight of the grooves, it’s a mighty debut from a young man seemingly oblivious to the weight of expectation associated with the pantheon of music-makers hailing from his hometown. “Broken Knowz” is only the third longplayer on Ninja Tune’s Technicolour imprint which has delivered a string of exceptional leftfield club music EPs from Florian Kupfer, Legowelt, Nathan Melja, NY*AK, U and superb albums from Levantis and Hieroglyphic Being.

We welcome DJ Taye back to Hyperdub for his second EP on the label after last year’s popular ‘Break It Down’ EP and a North American tour with Jessy Lanza. The ‘Move Out’ EP is a masterclass in a distinctly soulful, dusky footwork sound with a melancholic undercurrent that’s crossed with a precise eye for detail. ‘Burnin Ya Boa’ ft DJ Manny opens the EP with a crisp, micro-edited arrangement of tumbling piano, dubbed out chants and a heart-tugging woodwind melody playing hide and seek with racing, ever-changing footwork drum and bass patterns. ‘Go 2 Sleep’ ft DJ Earl rolls with a narcoleptic woody percussion loop, and a vocal urging “Please go to sleep”, a request which is challenged with drill sounds, rave stabs, energetic footwork drums, and soft bass tones. 'Bang with the Funk' crushes the 1-2-3-4-5 Sesame Street song, chopping its samples into hard shapes. Things turn dark and minimal with 'The King' which features a sample from Fresh, with strange atonal tones playing off against spooky chords and a tactile bass. On the flipside 'What Am I?’ pairs syncopated snares and 4/4 bass pulses while percussion bangs and shimmers over clipped diva refrains and anxious piano. Public Service Broadcasting release a double LP/CD live album of their sold-out performance at Brixton Academy from ‘The Race For Space’ Tour, recorded 29 November 2015. Willgoose, Esq. “I was persuaded over a few months, though, by both the reaction on the night - which was overwhelming - and of those who watched the stream as it went out live, that something special had occurred and it truly was worth documenting. Brixton had been a dream of mine ever since seeing the Manics there on their Everything Must Go tour many moons ago. Playing there as Public Service Broadcasting, and selling it out, was something I never even thought of as a possibility. It’s my favourite venue in the world and we wanted to make it a show to remember.” The show features arena-level production crammed onto the Brixton stage with a 13- piece choir, 5-piece string section, expanded brass section, a longer set list, Smoke Fairies guesting on Valentina, a surprise special guest, dancers, pyrotechnics and more as the London-based band wow a hometown crowd with a very special performance. Ben Billington has devoted a decade of his life to Chicago’s overlapping scenes of experimental DIY, electronic music, and free jazz as a part of seminal outfits including Tiger Hatchery, ONO, and ADT. His solo music under the Quicksails moniker compresses his mastery of synthesis and percussion into dense electro-acoustic compositions animated by stacked layers of rhythm and alien texture. Mortal, his first LP for Hausu Mountain following releases on labels like Spectrum Spools, NNA Tapes, and Captcha, finds Quicksails piecing together some of his most complex compositions to date, steering his network of synths, samplers, and acoustic instruments through conflicting emotional territories as a means of personal catharsis and abstracted self expression. Each track on Mortal presents its own mosaic of juxtaposed textures and moods, as electronic and acoustic elements swell together into short RIYL: Emeralds, Sun Ra narrative arcs: lush polyphonic synth lines clash or collude over Arkestra, Golden Retriever, basslines that trudge through the nether regions of the mix; 70s Miles Davis massive saxophone and trumpet fanfares (performed by Heavy-weight LP. Artwork designed by Sam Nigrosh Billington’s ADT bandmates Carlos Chavarria and Jake Acosta) (Oozing Wound, Form A weave through layers of complementary electronic melody; busy Log, Grasshopper) percussion lines sound out from drum kit, hand percussion, and drum machine, smearing together into a rhythmic bedrock that blurs the line between the synthetic and the organic.

Quicksails composed Mortal during a year of intense personal upheavals, and he presents the album as a series of obliquely diaristic sketches coded with the emotional residue of real life events. “The Compound Blues” evokes claustrophobia with its queasy bassline and shuffling percussion, but reclaims a more even mindset as layers of yearning saxophone and filtered synth washes drift into the mix. “Silent Separation” bursts over spastic IDM rhythmic grids and light-speed electronic squelches, which all come to share space with walls of major-key synth harmony. “Left Temple” mimics the mental overload of a migraine episode with arrhythmic noise formants and dizzy peals of atonality. For all the darkness this music is capable of channeling, Quicksails’ optimism and joyfulness shines through in each track’s baroque construction and inevitably redemptive climax. He finds room in his compositions for untold layers of acoustic instrumentation, from tabla to gong to gamelan-like chimes, which achieve a form of reverse synthesis by becoming nearly indistinguishable from his electronics. Meanwhile, his synth patches pound out and burst with the attack and the finegrained textures of acoustic percussion, or blend seamlessly in electro-acoustic bliss with sax and trumpet leads. Quicksails explores the uncanny valley between performance styles and traditions, achieving a hybridized performance style that uses the experimental electronic and free jazz vocabularies as tools for nuanced storytelling and pointed personal exploration.

Justin Carter never expected to be known as a DJ. Before the Mister Saturday Night resident had ever put a record on a turntable, his voice and pen were his outlets. As he's gone down the path of the dance, his singing and writing have ticked along quietly in the background, a secret to most. "Know It All," his first record, and the lead single from The Leaves Fall, his debut LP due on Mister Saturday Night Records on January 27, brings that secret into the light. Justin's vocals on "Know It All" are intimate but pointed, with hints of Arthur Russell and John Martyn. The foundation of the song is a pizzicato cello part from Archie Pelago's Greg Heffernan; reggae-tinted organ hiccups from Jason Lindner, the keyboardist on Bowie's final album, Blackstar, fill the space between. It all hangs together in a subtle mix by Benjamin Tierney, who also worked his magic on Kamasi Washington's The Epic.

Immersion’s new album of seductive instrumentals takes in a wide range of moods and energies. The duo of Malka Spigel of Minimal Compact and Colin Newman of Wire, Immersion is a true collaboration, with no delineation between who plays what. Through the nineties Immersion released three acclaimed albums of expansive instrumental electronica. Now 17 years later they are back. Though their sound is unmistakable, clearly the duo have evolved. The pulsing and sliding analogue synths are still present but the most noticeable differences are the introduction of guitars into the mix and an increased sense of urgency to the compositions. This means it cannot be classified as ambient music. Although it does have its contemplative moments - such as the gently unfolding Slow Light - the majority of the album is powered by a strong sense of motion. Nanocluster is a tense, insistent composition. Like the score to some futuristic spy film, it demonstrates their skill at creating sound worlds alive with detail. The urgent forward propulsion of Organic Cities weaves in shades of prime era Tangerine Dream. The fact the album has been largely constructed using analogue instrumentation rather than digital definitely gives it a warmth and depth which sets it apart.
