Of that track, the band said it "feels like a good starting point to releasing music again, its very much us looking forward. It's off-kilter, processed and bubbles and moves right through".

After touring North across the globe, James Buttery, James Young and Aiden Whalley decamped to a house in the countryside of West Yorkshire, secluding themselves from the distractions of London and writing as a trio for the firs time. Ultimately, News From Nowhere is a reflection of the time they spent together there. Eventually proceedings moved from the band's makeshift digital studio in the house to producer Richard Formby's (Wild Beasts, Spaceman 3) studio. The songs that had been inspired by English prog-rock and obscure techno and created as loops based on the band's affinity for hip-hop production ("literally everything from Lex Luger to Geoff Barrow") grew into sublimely arranged works. In the end, the album arrived at an altogether singular existence, delving into the moments between moments and elevating them to epic, kaleidoscopic heights. So, the journey from Nowhere begins.

Cheatahs frontman Nathan Hewitt and guitarist James Wignall met eight years ago while working in a Camden pub, and instantly bonded over their shared passion for music and Seinfeld. Nathan had just moved to London from his hometown of Edmonton in Alberta, Canada, while James, originally from Leicester, had moved to the capital after studying in Leeds. Fast-forward six years––each having played in various bands in between––and the friends finally began to work seriously together when Nathan asked James to collaborate on a batch of songs he’d been working on. The musical understanding between the two was instantaneous and they went about recruiting two friends to complete the lineup––bassist and producer Dean Reid, who had moved to London from San Diego, California, a few years before, and drummer Marc Raue, originally from Dresden, Germany. Following a few tapes and seven inches on various labels, in June this year Cheatahs released their first EP, “Coared”, recorded and produced by Dean, on Marshall Teller Records, of which the NME wrote: “by pushing the hooks and melodies to the fore and not just relying on the “sound”, this new quartet are elevating themselves to be one of the best.” With songs written by Nathan and James beginning to pile up, the band decided to make a follow up EP immediately. Again produced by Dean, the quartet recorded the bulk of the music in their Hackney studio over a weekend in June. Shortly after, the band supported Milk Music in east London, a gig at which, as luck would have it, Mark and Ben from Wichita were in attendance. The duo were impressed by the set and asked the band if they had any recorded music they could listen to. After hearing “Coared” and the unreleased songs, Wichita offered to sign Cheatahs and put out the newly recorded EP – “SANS” – as their first release on the label. In February 5, 2013 Extended Plays will be released in North America. The album combines the two UK releases of “Coared” and “SANS”. LIVE DATES: Cheatahs will tour North America in support of their friends and fellow Londoners, Veronica Falls, in March. The band then hope to be in Austin for SxSW. ODEON If geography has an impact on music, then Vienna has coloured Tosca’s music at every turn. Over the course of a career spanning two decades, the Austrian capital has inspired Richard Dorfmeister (of Kruder & Dorfmeister fame) and Rupert Huber to make electronic mood pieces coloured with Mitteleuropean melancholy. It’s a bittersweet juxtaposition that is much in evidence on the pair’s new album, ‘Odeon’. It opens with the hazy strings of ‘Zur Guten’, which ebbs into the oozing keys and pizzicato steel string guitars of ‘What If’, which features a smokey vocal from Sarah Carlier. Lead single ‘Jayjay’ is a haunted combination of sombre piano chords, rolling drums and weird, otherworldly vocals from JJ Jones. It’s the pivotal track on a record that sees Tosca tapping into gothic atmospheres. It’s darker than their previous five albums, more downbeat, at times ambient. It’s unlike anything else out there at the moment. Is there a reason for this sombre tone? Nothing specific. “Obviously our music is influenced by our experiences of life — it couldn’t be any other way — so in some senses it’s a kind of diary, but there weren’t any single incidents that caused the record to be that little bit darker,” says Dorfmeister. If anything, the exact opposite is true: life has been good. “Over the last year I think we’ve both learnt to be more generous and to understand our own limitations and other people’s” says Huber. A case of musical yin and personal yang, then. The album’s name, meanwhile, comes from the venue in Vienna where Tosca debuted the new material in October. The performance went so well they decided it would make a fortuitous name — the music/place interface in action once again. The performance features as a bonus disc on the deluxe version of the album, which will be available exclusively via !K7's webstore. More than anything, ‘Odeon’ is the sound of a band at the top of their game. A good time for them to release a career retrospective then. Dorfmeister reflects on the band’s history. “It sounds like a cliche, but we’ve never really thought about other people’s music when we’re writing our own,” he says. “We try and create our own sound. We really have always been like that. And I think we’ve developed a trademark sound because of that.” They certainly have. It’s been called ‘the Vienna sound’. And, in updated form, it still sounds like nothing else.

In 2005, Michael Reilly embarked on a journey down south with the intention to film a documentar y about local musicians. Through a series of unexpected yet for tunate events Reilly was led to Como Mississippi, and ultimately to the table of Angela Taylor – where she, her sister Della Daniels, and long time friend Ester Mae Smith performed an a cappella rendition of “Peace of Mind”. It was this moment that inspired Michael to return to Como with proper recording equipment, and much like what Alan Lomax had done decades before, document some of the most honest, soulful music to ever be tracked to tape. The first volume of recordings, 2008’s Como Now featured the Como Mamas, as well as several other local groups delivering hear t stopping a cappella renditions of songs they cherished. OH, MAYHEM! The 10th album of Dutch indie rockband, Bettie Serveert will be released in early 2013 on Second Motion Records in the US. Oh, Mayhem! Will be available on CD, LP and digital download. The album has been described by insiders as being their most “audacious album since their debut, Palomine (Matador Records) from 1992” The follow-up on Pharmacy of Love (2010 – Second Motion) finds the band more energetic and confident than ever. Guitarist Peter Visser explaining the making of Oh, Mayhem!: “When we booked the studio, half of the songs still had to be written. This turned out to be a benefit: the record is very spontaneous. All the instruments were recorded simultaneously. The advantage is that you can look each other in the eye while playing and there’s more interaction, you can feel the energy in the recording” The band will be touring in the US in early 2013 in support of the release of “Oh, Mayhem!”

“This record is the closest I’ve ever gotten to the sound I hear in my head in the middle of the night,” Chris Stamey says of his new album, Lovesick Blues. “It’s always the quiet ones that sound the loudest in the dark.” As a solo artist, producer, arranger, studio entrepreneur and founder of seminal indie combo the dB’s, the North Carolina-bred singer/songwriter/ guitarist has built a beloved and influential catalog that’s earned him the devotion of a far-ranging fan base and won him enduring status as a godfather to the Southern alternative pop community. Lovesick Blues is Stamey’s first full-length release since A Question of Temperature, his 2005 collaboration with Yo La Tengo. The new album follows on the heels of Falling Off the Sky, the long-awaited, much-acclaimed reunion album of the dB’s, as well as Stamey’s involvement as musical director and orchestrator for a series of all-star concert performances of Big Star’s classic Third album in New York, London, Austin and Carrboro, NC. Working in that collaborative environment and with those orchestrations was part of the inspiration for the new album. Stamey explains, “I was thinking about records like The Ballad of Todd Rundgren and Nick Drake’s Bryter Layter and Robert Wyatt’s “At Last I Am Free” and Richard Thompson’s Small Town Romance. Those are all records that were a source of comfort to me at various points in my life. None of the songs on Lovesick Blues are traditional three-chord blues, but some of them speak that same emotional language.” Some unexpected but helpful input arrived in the form of XTC’s Andy Partridge, who entered the picture after Stamey invited him to make a vocal cameo on “You n Me n XTC.” Partridge declined the offer, but ended up getting involved in the project anyway, offering some key production, arranging and mixing suggestions via transatlantic email. “It was like having an exceptionally intuitive Ouija board, and it really enlivened the process,” Stamey says. “I’ve been very lucky to have been around a lot of great, creative musicians in my life,” he states, adding, “I still learn things all the time from them, and I know that I still have a long way to go. But I think this is the closest I’ve gotten on record to expressing what is unique about what I do, the part that’s been there all along.” Highlights: • • • • • •

In 1999, The Two Dollar Pistols frontman John Howie, Jr. and North Carolina native, Tift Merritt, joined forces to try out some country duets they were working on - and more than a decade later, Yep Roc Records is releasing the album on vinyl. After performing the songs to an enthusiastic audience at Chapel Hill venue Local 506, the duo decided to record a seven-song EP. The Two Dollar Pistols and Tift Merritt paid tribute to country greats and duet partners held in high esteem, as well as introduced John and Tift’s first two songs penned together. The EP includes “Suppose Tonight Would Be Our Last,” originally recorded and written by George Jones and Melba Montgomery, Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton’s classic “Just Someone I Used to Know”, and “One Paper Kid” as recorded by Willie Nelson and Emmylou Harris. With “If Only You Were Mine” and “Counting the Hours,” John and Tift made a first indelible mark on the duet tradition with their own compositions.

For fans of Lee Hazlewood, Roy Orbison, Hank Williams, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, Jesus & Mary Chain, & Spiritualized Gunman and the Holy Ghost is another music project created by Hákon Aðalsteinsson (The Third Sound). The songs were written in Berlin during the coldest months of the winter then recorded and mixed next spring time. Now available on 180 gram vinyl. From a review by JJ Baker: When I started listening to Gunman & The Holy Ghost it actually made me laugh. Such misery! This is melancholy with gristle! This album is barefaced in it’s misery-it doesn’t resist it, it uses it. Song titles like “I Don’t Believe In Love Anymore” and “Oh Lord, Let Me Die In Pain” are pretty good indication of what we’re in for here, though there’s great variation on this deliciously dark album. Opener “The Eight To Five Train To Nothing” snared me right in the lip and I was willfully dragged up through that ink black water and onto the good ship Gunman. A relatively upbeat tune, it has some sad, sad lyrics: “I would want you here but you’re nowhere near so I just keep steaming on; Into the wilderness and unhappiness right back where I came from” Lines like this are so damn dark, they bring a smile to my face… There’s a great range of styles played with here, mainly in the realm of folk rock. Rollicking country tales of a cowboys solitude (“Outlaw’s Shout”) mid tempo jaunts of misery (“Oh Lord, Let Me Die In Pain”) and yearning R ‘n B tinged folk (“Lonely”). “Like A Soldier…” is the most Cohen-esque number, undoubtedly paying homage to the great poet in sound and lyrics. The military beat used is a stroke of simple genius and lends itself beautifully to the metaphor the song - that love is war. Closer “Dream Of A Highway” opens softly enough and builds superbly, before unfolding into it’s noisy, dramatic conclusion. It’s a song that reaches great heights and, like all good albums do, leaves us hungering for more. The area is primarily known for cajun and zydeco music, so it may surprise you to know that early 80s melodic rockers Le Roux and Toto both had their roots in Louisiana. FOUR ALBUMS INTO their career and Le Roux were edging ever closer to scoring success on a national and, indeed, international level. This was back in the days when record companies would give artists enough creative lee-way to develop their craft and build a committed fan following. ‘So Fired Up’ was, then, the band’s fifth album and is largely regarded as one of their finest, erupting with the sort of energy and sophistication that rivals the great melodic rock champions of the day such as Foreigner and Journey. Originally released in 1983 and once again produced in-house by bassist and founder member Leon Medica, the record featured two new member; that’s guitarist Jim Odon and vocalist Fergie Frederiksen, formerly of lauded pomp rockers Trillion. With the new material highlighted by Frederiksen’s captivating vocals and the tough-guy guitar playing of Odon, the band found a new lease of life, constructing a record to rival their previous masterpiece ‘Up’. Sadly, despite the quality of ‘So Fired Up’ and the momentum built with their preceding releases, the record commercially underachieved, leaving the band exposed to label politics. So, when a change of regime occurred at RCA, Le Roux where summarily dismissed along with several other promising acts on the cusp of success. Holed beneath the waterline, the band fell apart, unable to sustain such a body blow. Thank heaven we still have their musical legacy to cherish.

The point he was alluding to is that you can take the man out of the South but you can’t take the South out of the man. It was a maxim that all the great Southern rock bands of the1970s stuck by even when fads, trends and personal circumstances laid waste to their confederate flag flying dreams. The Outlaws were a case in point. By 1982 the band had left behind their glory years, operating mostly out of a sense of duty. And they chose to hang up their stetsons and kick off their muddy cowboy boots was no surprise. Fortunately in 1985 the band reunited around the core components of Hughie Thomason and Henry Paul to sign with Pasha Records, a label exploding with the success of a revitalised Quiet Riot. Produced by Randy Bishop and recorded in Los Angeles, ‘Soldiers Of Fortune’ explores the heart of the Southern rock style, injecting it with a well-executed dose of contemporary hard rock bravado. The songs here are mainly rough and tough barn burners, working the same musical path as Blackfoot and Molly Hatchet with the twin lead guitars working overtime. Hell Yeah!

Meet Nils Bech - an unusual gentleman who explores the tensions between art and dance, contemporary music and pop music. His way of making connections between musical genres and across different settings sets him apart as a truly original artist. Look Inside is the title of his second album, an album featuring arrangements and performances that range from electronica producers Ost&Kjex to the contemporary composers Ole Henrik Moe and Julian Skar. Ole Henrik Moe who did most of the string arrangements is considered one of Scandinavia's most important classical composers and has worked closely with Nils Bech to make the album what it is. "I wanted to make an album that brought together genres that may feel opposite, but still feels very close to me" Nils Bech explains. As the sub-titles on each song indicates, the album tells a story from start to finish: "The album tells the story of a romantic meeting that made me take a new look at myself and defy parts of my personality that I've brought with me my whole life" Nils Bech has been involved in the music and arts scene in Oslo for close to a decade and has performed all over the world: The 54th Venezia Biennale, The New Museum and PS1 in New York, The Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) and Frieze Fondation London to name a few. RAISA K 'FEEDER' 'Feeder' is the first release on Technicolour, Ninja Tune's brand new imprint. It is Raisa K's first solo release having previously collaborated with the likes of DELS, Kwes and Micachu. Raisa K plays keyboards as part of Micachu and The Shapes, having met Marc Pell and Micachu whilst studying at London's prodigious Guildhall. After the band finished touring their debut album worldwide 'Jewellery' she started working on her instrumental productions and doing remixes under the guise m.a.t.h.e.s. with bandmate Mica Levi. They have remixed and worked with the likes of The Streets, the London Sinfonietta, The Invisible, Metronomy and Connan Mockasin. After taking part at the 2011 Red Bull Music Academy in Madrid, she decided to step out as a solo artist. Raisa K is still experimenting but for now expect bold streaks of sound jumping out of non-genrespecific electronic soundscapes. Raisa has also been playing with Ninja Tune MC DELS over the past year, proving her eclectic genremoulding abilities.

After two succesful EPs and a big dose of remixes it s time to release the debut album of Savages y Suefo! (The two members of Savages Y Suefo came from the same eclectic music scene of Budapest. They play downtempo, breaks, jazz, funk, hip-hop, dub, electro swing and all kinds of multikulti-folk in their dj sets and they incorporate the same variety in their own music as well. (Savages released his solo debut album (Five Finger Discount) in 2008 via Chameleon Records. In the same year he met Suefo (also a member of Vono Box) and they started working together on tracks and remixes. Since then they did remixes for !DelaDap, [dunkelbunt], Max Pashm, Rube, Kid Loco, [re:jazz], or Danilo Venturi to name a few. (Their first EP came out in 2010 at UrbanWorld Records. In the meantime many of their tunes came out on compilations like Global Bass (UrbanWorld), Electro Swing Fever (Wagram), The Spirit Of Electro Swing (Wagram), Electro Swing Revolution (Lola s World), or Sun Dub vol.2 (Poets Club). (The new single of the duo came out at Agogo Records in September 2012 and now their debut album is also here. This album is a colourful, emotional trip inspired by bands like United Future Organization, Up, Bustle & Out, Karminsky Experience, or Thievery Corporation. The two dj / producer get some help from their musician and singer fellaz like the bouncing, always happy MC Guacho in the songs Our World Our Style and En La Orilla Del Danuvio . He came to Hungary from Urugay and become one of the most active figures of the Budapest nightlife as vocalist of bands like Rojo Vivo and Anselmo Crew. Judy Jay who sings in Ballroom Breakers released her debut album in last year. She s also well known as a guestvocalist and already worked together with bands like Realistic Crew, Casio Samples, or Zagar. Polnauer Flora who sings in Or Ve Hoshech was a member of the bands Planet 55, Beat Dis, Zuboly, or her main band the klezmer-jazzhiphop group called Hagesher. She moved to Berlin from Budapest in the last year and she works with different jazz bands there. Maszkura who plays on accordion in Tequila Man and An-Nil Al-Azraq came from Transylvania. He started to play on accordion when he was 9, ten years later he released two hip-hop albums, and in 2007, he founded his band Maszkura and the Tücsökraj, which become an underground star. G·bos Barna who sings and plays on kaval and talking-drum in Tequila Man and Barna is the leader of the world music band called Peca. Tapes (from !K7) asks the great and good of modern music making the question, "What would be the perfect mixtape?" The only rules are old school. Two halves (like an old tape) split roughly down the middle, home made artwork and some showing off about the depths of your record collection. Musically there are no boundaries. This edition: Foals Foals answer this by creating a mix which is eclectic, pop, deep, druggy and heavily influenced by the spirit of the early house scene shown by inclusion of the originators, Marshall Jefferson and Arnold Jarvis and the modern day benefactors like Julio Bashmore and Tanner Ross . There's some digging in the crates - Confusion (Ma Afrika) was ripped from a real tape and comes from Apartheid era South Africa and a remix of Sepalcure - Every Day Of My Life by Jimmy Edgar! All in all - the perfect mixtape. Foals always wanted to make kids dance, but it was not ever thus. Four of their five members coalesced from the ashes of various circuit-hardened bands. They were bored of the anally retentative indie-math-post-whatever nanocosm they inhabited, and tired of the staid, codified dynamics of the rock show. They wanted to make music that was new, vibrant and exciting, to recreate the feeling the first time they'd heard Repeater or Daydream Nation. Edwin Congreave had never played an instrument before, but during his shifts in an Oxford restaurant he'd introduced Yannis Phillipakis (the nascent band's first-among-equals) to enough hours of mindblowing music to warrant a place in any rehearsal room or recording studio. It was decided that Edwin, now armed with a few curious analogue eBay finds, would become their synth player, and his cutting-edge knowledge of labels like Kompakt, DFA, R&S and Strictly Rhythm and understanding of the dynamics of the dancefloor would become the crucial final piece of the sound of their debut album, the tight, uncompromising and brutally funky Antidotes. After joining Foals he would DJ through the night after the visceral, chaotic house party sets that made the band's name, and as the band grew in stature and crashed into the mainstream he'd play at their after-parties, be they swanky label-funded Kensington nightclubs or airless basements in his native Oxford. The one thing that remained constant was Edwin's sets; always striking that perfect balance between obscure and popular; always sending the party into raptures.
