CHUCK PROPHET BOBBY FULLER DIED FOR YOUR SINS RELEASE DATE: FEBRUARY 10, 2017

Chuck Prophet describes his new album Bobby Fuller Died For Your Sins as a “California Noir,” an album inspired partly by the mysterious death of rocker Bobby Fuller in LA in 1966. “California has always represented the Golden Dream, and it’s the tension between romance and reality that lurks underneath the surface in all noir films and paperbacks, and that connects these songs.” Gritty and jangly, Chuck’s new album features 13 original works that explore doomed love, loneliness and fast-paced violence via Chuck’s muscular songwriting craft. They include songs about Fuller, the death of David Bowie, and the killing of a San Francisco security guard named Alex Nieto that drew international headlines as “Death By Gentrification.” Bobby Fuller finds Chuck coming full circle. He cut the album to tape at Hyde Street Studio in San Francisco, which also happens to be the same studio where Prophet did his very first recording session, while still in high school. Chuck brought out his ’64 Stratocaster for the sessions, conjuring a sound that Jonathan Richman once described as “gasoline in the sand, like a motorcycle at a hot dog stand.” He’s backed by The Mission Express, a band featuring his wife Stephanie Finch (vocals, keyboards, guitar), Kevin White (bass), Vicente Rodriguez (drums, vocals) and James DePrato (guitar). Lead single “Bad Year For Rock and Roll” is a timely homage to rock greats lost in 2016: “The Thin White Duke took a final bow / there’s one more star in the heavens now/I’m all dressed up in a mohair suit / watching Peter Sellers thinking of you.” “Jesus Was A Social Drinker” starts as a punchy mid-tempo rocker with clanking cowbell before unfurling into an explosive, psychedelic coda. “Alex Nieto” is what Chuck refers to as his first protest song. It’s “an homage to a good man who should still be alive,” says Chuck.

Recorded at Dallas and Travis Good’s parents’ home during the Canadian winter of 2015-16, Northern Passages is not simply the next entry in the canon of The Sadies, but another boundary-pushing, line-blurring example of why they are one of the most resoundingly respected guitar bands around. Adding Philly’s constant hitmaker Kurt Vile to their list of long and storied collaborators (which counts Neil Young, Neko Case, Robyn Hitchcock, Jon Spencer and myriad others as entries), The Sadies have made an album that is at once inviting and unflinching, calculating yet soulful. The powerful image of the Northern Lights on the cover is a sight few of us will ever get to behold with our own eyes yet the awe-inspiring natural beauty and mystery captured in the photo are an ideal reflection of the music contained within. This is the stunning debut album from Laraaji. ‘Celestial Vibration’ was originally released in 1978 under the name Edward Larry Gordon, and then first issued by Soul Jazz Records/Universal Sound in 2010. Soul Jazz Records are now issuing this hypnotic piece newly re-mastered album once again in a very limited vinyl edition of 1000 and new CD as a full Laraaji release. ‘Celestial Vibration’ is a cosmic journey sounding unlike anything else when it was first released in 1978. Laraaji’s album was first issued in New York as a private-pressing record with only very minimal distribution. His distinctive use of the harp-like open-stringed zither and kalimba creates a hypnotic trance like musical landscape. Laraaji first came to fame in the 1980s as a worldwide ambient artist working with Brian Eno on EG Records. At this time Laraaji worked with a wide range of experimental musicians - Jon Hassell, Harold Budd, Michael Brook, Bill Nelson, Roger Eno, Nana Vasconcelos and Bill Laswell. Since Soul Jazz Records/Universal Sound first released ‘Celestial Vibration’ seven years ago (now long deleted), Laraaji’s career has had a renaissance, releasing a string of new albums including a fascinating collaboration with Blues Control for the FRKYWS label, as well as reissues of earlier albums including a threealbum cassette only release last year. Today Gordon continues his unique musical and spiritual path - performing his music mainly for meditation at yoga global retreats. He runs his own ‘Therapeutic Laughter Workshop’ where he coaches people in the mindful use of laughing for its health benefits. The album is issued as a limited-edition deluxe vinyl and CD edition (previously released as Edward Larry Gordon ‘Celestial Vibration’).

SUGAR DADDY Strut present the first in a series of essential original LP reissues exploring rare and under-rated African, Latin and Caribbean music classics, curated by Duncan Brooker. In January 2017, the series kicks off with ‘Sugar Daddy’, an experimental highlife / disco outing by Nigerian highlife guitarist Joe King Kologbo. Building his career as a composer and player with Eastern Star Dance Band at their residency at the Atlantic Hotel in Aba, Eastern Nigeria, Joe King Kologbo was forced to flee to Ghana when the Biafran War broke out in 1967. As his son Oghene recalls, “when war came, everything just scatter. He lost his house, everything.” Joe King played with a variety of bands in Ghana including Real Ruby’s, a jazz highlife big band, before returning to Lagos in 1971. By the time he recorded the ‘Sugar Daddy’ LP for the tiny Electromat label in 1980, he was one of the older musicians on the circuit.

Oghene Kologbo remembers, “My Mum used to say, ‘I hope you don’t go and play guitar everywhere and play around, don’t go and be Sugar Daddy!’ All my father’s friends nicknamed him ‘Sugar Daddy’ so he did the song in a fun way. He was a nice man. He never did ‘playboy’.” “Since he was based in the East during his early days, he was not as well known nationally as some of the other highlife players of the time,” continues Oghene,”so it’s nice that this album is coming out again. It brings back good memories.” Joe King Kologbo’s ‘Sugar Daddy’ is released in its original artwork and features new interviews with Oghene Kologbo and Sonny Akpan of The Funkees. Rachel and Dean are joined by many special guests, including Justin Lansing and Joe Mailander of The Okee Dokee Brothers. Whimsical, evocative lyrics convey the wonder and appreciation of our natural world, often with a little humor. The music is a sonic painting with many instruments/colors, including guitars, marimba, English horn, recorders, organ pipes, strings, mbira, trombone, French horn and bass. Layers of beautiful voicings bring close the messages of each of the songs.

Dean Jones has been creating music for families for many years as a solo artist and with the successful band, Dog On Fleas. He has produced many successful children’s music artists including Frances England, Elizabeth Mitchell, Gustafer Yellowgold, also including multiple Grammy Nominated albums in the Best Children’s category, as well as the Grammy Winning Can You Canoe? by The Okee Dokee Brothers. Dean works with the children’s label, Spare the Rock Records, on compilations for causes. Their most recent release is Let All The Children Boogie: A Tribute to David Bowie, benefiting the It Gets Better Project supporting LGBTQ youth. Rachel Loshak has been writing and performing original material for 20 years as a singer/songwriter/bassist. She has performed and collaborated on projects with Norah Jones, Moby, Natalie Merchant, Chris Ballew and many more. Rachel is partner to Morgan Taylor, creator of Gustafer Yellowgold, having managed that project for many years on their label, Apple-Eye Productions.
