REDEYE WELCOMES TRUTH & SOUL RECORDS
THE BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE REVELATION WHAT'S INSIDE: JOHN DOE HYPERDUB COMPILATION MR. SCRUFF LONESOME SHACK EMMA RUTH RUNDLE
NOW AVAILABLE: The critically acclaimed reissue of the first-ever open gay country record, from 1973 Pitchfork “Best New Reissue,” features in The Guardian, Grantland, Out, Boston Globe, Pitchfork, and more BEST NEW REISSUE: 8.6. Masterful—sexy, sad, and tender all at once. Haggerty’s songs are resonant and wonderful, folding pain into jokes and vice versa and exuding heartbreak and anger and wry good humor. It’s a tremendous feat, a remarkable act of bravery and honesty as well as a statement on the universality of love and lust and belonging. Pop songs are limited vessels for social justice, but the good ones do a remarkable job of teaching empathy, a few minutes at a time, and Haggerty’s songs build a better world to live in, for forty minutes or so. There aren’t many achievements more exalted than that. Now that the resourceful and adventurous North Carolina label Paradise of Bachelors is reissuing Lavender Country, the enduring richness of Haggerty’s achievement can be appreciated again. - Pitchfork Thankfully, the excellent NC–based indie label Paradise of Bachelors has stepped up by reissuing the trailblazing (and until now scarcely available) self-titled 1973 debut by Lavender Country. For all the out contemporary artists, few dare to be as explicit about the frustrations and pleasures of being a gay man as Haggerty. If Lavender Country were only a historical curio, it would be a fascinating listen. But it’s also an often pretty and delightfully strange proto-indie Americana record that predates backwood eccentrics like Bonnie “Prince” Billy and Bill Callahan. - Grantland Pioneering ’73 gay country LP, musically in Holy Modal Rounders territory; odd, reedy renderings of [Haggerty’s] caustic, political themes with ramshackle arrangements. Beautifully packaged with a moving oral history. - MOJO A compelling musical time capsule that melds humor, protest, and pride into a sonic canvas in the vein of contemporaries the Fugs or a wryer incarnation of Ray Wylie Hubbard and The Cowboy Twinkies. Plaintive fiddle lines and rambling piano fills situate the album firmly within a Nashville-bar-band idiom, while Haggerty’s nasal tenor is so distinct as to discourage comparison. Lyrically, the album is often humorous and painful at once, a feat that makes tales of exclusion and institutionalized homophobia all the more compelling. It’s enough to give you goosebumps. - BOMB A brilliant record, music that matters. In a different world, would Lavender Country already be a part of country music’s storied history? Would Haggerty be an icon alongside greats like Willie and Hank? Country music at its best has always been a medium that conveys deeply personal, intriguing stories, and in that sense the album is a triumph. Lavender Country encapsulates the rebellion and defiance of old country music, a music that sprang from a boundless culture that refused to give up its rural, lawless freedom, and there’s a sense of that backwoods lawlessness in Lavender Country. - MySpace The ’70s were a groundbreaking time for country music—but few innovators were as fearless as Patrick Haggerty… The album showcases Haggerty’s wit, heart, and outspoken grace. Lavender Country is simply a beautiful piece of ’70s country, mildly psychedelic and with hints of rustic folk. - AV Club A brave and powerful manifesto, a country album with a punk-rock message: “I’m gay, so fuck you.”- Seattle Weekly If the sound of Lavender Country sometimes recalls the style of similar post-countercultural efforts by such avant-garde folk performers as Ed Sanders and The Holy Modal Rounders, Haggerty’s lyrics provide a tour of the battered psyche of a man who simply wants to live his life free of equivocation. It’s safe to say no Nashville country songwriter of the era would have written about “straight white honky quacks.” - The Nashville Scene Patrick Haggerty is a 70-year-old man who, in 1973, wrote and recorded a gay country album that is one of the most punk rock things you will ever hear. As righteous and as ribald as they come, Lavender Country is like a raw Hank Williams platter that tells queers to come out and homophobes to go fuck themselves. Forty-one years later, this unjustly arcane disc is still revolutionary. - Wondering Sound So here’s the story: a Seattle man named Patrick Haggerty wrote and recorded an openly gay country album as Lavender Country in 1973. This is because he is a steelier person than you or I. He included a waltz called “Cryin’ These Cocksucking Tears” because he’s funnier than you or I. And he loaded the song, and the album, with exquisitely personal and painful lyrics that raged against the hypocrisies, large and small that defined his life. It is a document of protest, but not a strident one. For years, this album was a rumor, a piece of cocktail conversation amongst hardcore record nerds. It is reentering the cultural conversation, deservedly, now that Paradise of Bachelors are reissuing the record.- Pitchfork Radical in 1973, and would still raise eyebrows in Nashville today. - Uncut Inverting, subverting, and perverting conservative, conventional country with cockeyed sarcasm and deviant rebel yells, Lavender Country’s landmark LP is not only an important artifact, but also serves as a time capsule containing an oral history chronicling, through the use of music as a medium for critical cultural communication, a singular experience of socio-political protest and gay liberation. - Flavorpill

Revelation is the first album that was fully recorded & produced at Anton’s recording studio in Berlin . It is the 14 th full length release from the Brian Jonestown Massacre recorded from late 2012 to early 2014. With Anton Newcombe refining the 13 tracks that appear on the album Featuring Ricky Maymi an original member of the band plays on this album. It also features Joachim Alhund (Les Big Byrds) , Constatine Karlis (Dimmer), & Ryan Van Kriedt (Asteroid #4) . Plus vocal performance in Swedish by Joachim Alhund (Les Big Byrds) on the opening track . This album brings the traditional Brian Jonestown Massacre sound mixed with eastern influences & bringing it up to date with the benefit of all the additional weirdness that's been discovered in the past 40 years. Two dozen band members later and numerous “ups and downs” (some have been famously sensationalized in the media ), the one thing that has always remained consistent for this psychedelic collective, is front man Mr. Anton Alfred Newcombe.

“Lindsay has no peer. He‘s a sensuous songwriter, too, with dissonant outbursts that suggest he‘s the perfect complement to . . . hyper-Brazilian, post-bossa precision.” —Village Voice “Lindsay has an ear for both tradition and experimentation, and a very musical sense of how to balance the two.” —Time Out New York
ARTO LINDSAY ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ARTO
Encyclopedia of Arto, coming out May 20th for Northern Spy Records, is a photograph of the musical world created by Arto Lindsay. A double CD that presents the different musical souls that have always been the basis of the musical creativity of this American musician and composer. Since his infancy, spent mostly in Brazil, Arto has been absorbing the music that surrounded him and elaborating a synthesis between experimental music and pop music. His first group, DNA, along with Ikue Mori, Robin Crutchfield and Tim Wright, without ever publishing an actual album, has deeply influenced the New York and worldwide experimental music scene, helping bring about the No Wave movement, brought to light by a compilation produced by Brian Eno in 1978 and titled “No New York”. As was clear from the innovative rhythmic elements already present in DNA, his Brazilian musical development already stood out in those years with Tropicalismo, Samba and Bossanova and with the Ambitious Lovers, the project which he gave life to in 1984 with the keyboard player Peter Scherer. No Wave and Post Punk were being enriched with Brazilian sonority such as Pagode and Bossanova which reached their heights in the cover of “Dora” by Dorival Cayimmi, an example of a popular Brazilian tradition showing up for the first time in a musical contest, that being that of the alternative American music which, up until then, had been absolutely distant. In this unique journey and in the many other collaborations with artists of
varying extraction (from John Lurie and Marc Ribot to Ryuichi Sakamoto) and in important musical productions, (the most important of all being “Estrangeiro” in 1989, a turning point album in Caetano Veloso’s artistic career) and reaching deserved recognition in 2002 with the victory of the Latin Grammy Award (for the production of Marisa Monte ‘s record, “Memorias, Cronicas e Declaracoes de Amor”), these apparently contrasting elements permeated eachother more and more, giving shape to the unmistakable style and creativity of Arto Lindsay. The first CD which makes up Encyclopedia of Arto includes the tracks that Lindsay has chosen from his solo albums of the period between 1996 and 2004, “O Corpo Sutil”, “Mundo Civilizado”, “Noon Chill”, “Prize”, “Invoke” and “Salt”, tracks that he wrote with exceptional travel companions like Amedeo Pace (Blonde Redhead), Marisa Monte, Caetano Veloso, Kassin, Vinicius Cantuaria, as well as the faithful Andrés Levin and Melvin Gibbs. In the second CD we find a solo performance of Arto, voice and guitar, a naked, cutting sound where the vocal melodies and the atonal guitar playing manage to epitomize all his “musical poetics”; it’s the essential Arto. Besides an unreleased track titled “Pony”, we find tracks from the aforementioned solo albums, including covers of Prince and Al Green, which revolutionize the studio versions recorded on “Mundo Civilizado..” We also find unreleased covers by Chico Buarque and also of the tradition of carioca Samba “Maneiras” (lead to success in Brazil by Zeca Pagodinho) and of the Samba Reggae “O Mais Belos Dos Belos” of Bahia.

Chatham County Line Tightrope
Release Date CD/LP: May 20, 2014 Entering their second decade as an ensemble, Chatham County Line bring a deep reverence for traditional American roots music and timeless bluegrass instrumentation to insightful, poetic original songs that are powerfully contemporary yet rich with the complex resonance of their southern heritage. Over the course of six studio albums and performances around the world, they have pursued a singular style that is entirely their own, yet connects with audiences from all walks. Dynamic and captivating, Chatham County Line are equally capable of classically hard-driving bluegrass and sparse, haunting ballads. The key to their sound lays in the close collaboration of the band’s four members: Dave Wilson (guitar), John Teer (mandolin, fiddle), Chandler Hold (banjo), and Greg Readling (bass). This partnership enriches their latest album Tightrope, which was forged over a year’s worth of intensive rehearsals where they put every element under the microscope. “At the end of the day,” explains Wilson, “you want to write songs that have a reason for existing. For Tightrope, there was a lot of scrutinizing. We wanted every song to make the future Greatest Hits.” In person, the band is a marvel of rugged soulfulness, veering from winningly loose to thrillingly tight. It’s readily apparent that these four men share a profound friendship, and love what they do. “With this band,” Wilson says, “you can’t just rotate a guy out and replace him. It’s something larger than that. It’s a big train we’re riding on, and everybody’s enjoying the ride.”

John Doe
The Best of John Doe: This far NATIONAL release date cd/LP: 05.20.2014
John Doe is much more likely to look ahead to what's next, rather than fixate on the past — even a past as storied and influential as his own. Part scrapbook, part roadmap, The Best of John Doe: This Far — available May 20, 2014 via Yep Roc — guides listeners through Doe's solo catalog. Compiled by Doe himself, the generous track listing (24 songs on download and double vinyl, 21 on CD) encompasses nearly a quarter century, highlighting songs from from nine records on six different labels. Sequenced non-chronologically, The Best of John Doe: This Far was compiled with four vinyl sides in mind. There was no formula: These are simply Doe's favorite moments, including in-concert staples, pivotal collaborations, personal milestones, and even a pair of unreleased reexaminations of songs from his past

CD-HDB-025 20/ 05 / 2014 2CD 5055300373519 $21.99 20
In 2014 Hyperdub is 10 years old. Founded by DJ and producer Kode9, the label has grown from its humble origins as a left-field dubstep label, and spread out to function as a cross-genre hub, absorbing sounds and ideas, keeping listeners on their toes, and refreshing itself while still maintaining its core sensibilities. To celebrate, Hyperdub will release four compilations which cluster thematic highlights from the last five years, all augmented with new material, as well as staging a number of international showcase events across the year. First up comes ‘Hyperdub 10.1’, a double CD covering the label’s dance floor dimension. Disc 1 features almost all new material from Hyperdub regulars such as Kode9 & The Spaceape, Quarta 330 and DJ Rashad, along with old and new allies. Opening with the oddball groove of DVA's 'Mad Hatter', we move into young Detroit producer Kyle Hall's 'Girl U So Strong', a slow builder that culminates in a blissed-out g-funk groove, Mala's 'Expected', a rock solid, melancholy half-step bulldozer, Kuedo's 'Mtzpn', Morgan Zarate's recent martial snare anthem, 'Kaytsu' and Helix's clubready remix of Kode9's 2013 'Xingfu Lu'. We also welcome back Flowdan, who appeared on early label hit ‘Skeng,’ with the malevolent, Footsieproduced 'Ambush'. The pace picks up on the second half of the CD with a volley of woozy and twisted footwork from most of the key members of Chicago’s Teklife crew. Taso & Djunya's Darwinian 'Only The Strongest Survive' descends into DJ Spinn's bombastic 'All My Teklife', DJ Taye's fizzling R&B jam, 'Get Em Up', the immaculate diva vocal cut-up of 'I'm Gonna Get You', DJ Rashad and Gantman's squiggly banger 'Acid LIfe', and the stone cold 'Icemaster' by Heavee. Earl, Rashad & Taye's 'Bombaklot' takes Hyperdub full circle with a yardcore bomb like a 2014 upgrade of the label's early days. Disc 1 closes with 'Chasing A Beast', a new gnarly hip hop track from Kode9 & The Spaceape, and Tokyo-based veteran ally Quarta330, who crafts in ‘Hanabi’ an epic, uptempo synthesiser jam. Disc 2 spotlights 17 high points of Hyperdub’s last half-decade, proven dance floor material from the grittier end of UK funky, grime, dubstep, hip hop and footwork. Artists featured include Burial, Cooly G, Champion, DVA, Funkystepz, Ill Blu, Walton, Ikonika, Kode9 & The Spaceape, Morgan Zarate, Mark Pritchard & Om'mas Keith, Terror Danjah & Riko, DOK, LV ft. Okmalumkoolkat, and DJ Rashad. ‘Hyperdub 10.1’ is more an ammunition belt than an album. Keep it locked for news of 10.2, 10.3 and 10.4 across 2014.

The first of the collective vinyl releases from the first of Hyperdub's 10th Anniversary compilations kicks things off with Mala’s ‘Expected (Level 10)’, a classic, rock solid, melancholy half-step bulldozer, with rich moog top melody. The second track is ‘Technical Difficulties’, an unusually dark and minimal piece from DVA, all swirling bass and punched in drums at a lumbering pace. Kuedo’s ‘Mtzpn’ is a downcast, rainy hip hop instrumental with splashy high hats and wavy chords. The EP finishes with Helix’s microedited take on Kode9’s ‘Xingfu Lu’, with the original track’s droney melody looped into tight repeating snippets over rugged 140 beats.

Kyle Hall back on Hyperdub for our 10th Anniversary? - Yes please. In fact this is more or less a long delayed EP from the vaults, recorded around the same time as his 2010 ‘Kaychunk’ EP … which just goes to show how ahead of the curve the young Detroit producer is. Starting with 'Girl U So Strong', the track riffs on a distorted arpeggiating bassline, seasick organ and a dubbed out voice, and a flicking metronomic note, starting slowly before shuffling drums give the track some rhythmic focus. Soon a warm melody builds over some happy arpeggios, and the whole track feels like a product of brilliant spontaneous energy. 'Take Me Away' works an 8 bit bassline, bleeps and throbs into an off beat shuffle over a pulsing bass drum, loose and happy, dosed with sunshine and space. .

Artist: Plaid Title: Reachy Prints 5.20.2014
WARPLP250/CD250
Overview "an institution, both in the history of modern electronic music and the discography of Warp" – XLR8R After twenty five years of working together, Plaid - Andy Turner and Ed Handley - are releasing their tenth album, Reachy Prints. The title, according to the duo, alludes to “the creative process, the capturing of ideas, and the devotion required to recreate them.” The work confirms their position at the vanguard of underground electronic music production incorporating the latest synthesis technologies in these compositions, whilst retaining their trademark emotive, yet playful, signature style present over their career.
Format: 12” Vinyl Boxlot: 25 Price: $22.99 Packaging: 180g LP in printed sleeve with download card code
Format: CD Boxlot: 30 Price: $14.99 Packaging: CD in Digi-pack
Turner and Handley continue their tradition of collaboration that has seen them work with a diverse range of musicians - from Björk, to the London Sinfonietta, to the Southbank Gamelan Players - as well as artists, and innovators in music technology. They recently took part in the Kickstarter campaign for Bruno Zamborlin’s Mogees product, that allows you to turn any object into a musical instrument with just a small device that connects to your smart phone. The artwork for Reachy Prints is created in collaboration with installation artist Eric Studer. The merging of the two images implies a new starting point in life. It serves as memento since it is hard to recall the incident. Altogether the image clarifies that the past is irreversible. And that an answer to 'why' is not relevant any longer." Musically, much of the new album feels like a journey into a subterranean world, with the grimy robotic tunnelling of ‘Wallet’ and ‘Ropen’, the cavernous elation of ‘Hawkmoth’ and ‘OH’. It surfaces with the sparkling ‘Matin Lunaire’ and driving melodies of ‘Liverpool Street’. Reachy Prints continues the evolution in Plaid’s long nurtured sound world - and reveals some of its hidden, most complex domains.

GENRE : ROCK FILE UNDER: “T” Trans Am RELEASE DATE : May 20, 2014 There are three ways of interpreting Volume X, the title of the new album by Trans Am. The first is obvious – it is the band’s tenth studio release, comprised of ten songs that display ten unique sides of Phil Manley, Nathan Means, and Sebastian Thomson. You can also imagine a volume knob being cranked all the way up, the amplification level for an ideal Trans Am listening session. But it can also be read as a representation of the band’s remarkable ability to express, and even embody, unknown capacities, adopting bold stylistic and aesthetic shifts as a defining tenet of their quarter-century long career. Trans Am refuse to rely on their legacy as innovators, opting instead to continue to break down established modes of songwriting, even if they established those modes themselves. Volume X continues in this gloriously contrarian tradition, presenting fans with strange and familiar sounds in new contexts, from kosmische rock to futuristic speed metal to robo-balladry to variants on classic rock that are so warped as to be rendered completely unrecognizable. “Anthropocene” opens the album with 30 seconds of serene synthesizer ambience before obliterating the stillness with a massive, fuzzy riff anchored by Thomson’s relentless, pounding groove, recorded live in the studio for maximum impact. Volume X is full of these types of disarming moments. Halfway through the sweeping, Kraftwerkian “Night Shift” the song’s syncopated shuffle suddenly becomes a throbbing motorik pulse as two drum takes are overlaid. “Backlash” creeps in with a massive synthesized low-end drone before breaking into a Kill ‘Em All inspired thrash riff that is one of the most aggressive passages the band has laid to tape. And the band saves their most poignant melody for the stripped down slow jam “I’ll Never,” with a vocoded Nathan Means intoning, “Its true, I’ll never get over you.”

Tom Kovacevic is a multi-instrumentalist who has been a vital part of the Portland, Maine musical landscape through his work with the bands Olas, Fire on Fire, Cerberus Shoal, and tarpigh. For this solo debut, Kovacevic focuses on the Arabic music he has been studying for twenty years. The album features songs performed on the oud, the nay flute, and both djembe and tchung drums. The album was mastered by Harris Newman at Grey Market Mastering and is cut to vinyl by Paul Gold at Salt Mastering LP is pressed on virgin vinyl and includes lyric insert and free download card Tom Kovacevic will be touring in Europe with labelmate Micah Blue Smaldone
Kovacevic had played guitar for many years when he decided to learn how to play the guitar’s ancestor, the oud. After playing the oud for some time he learned the nay flute (rim blown and fully chromatic) which is not only one of the oldest instruments in continual use (4,000+ years), but also one of the most difficult to play. One of the predominating musical influences on the record is related to the drums used. The djembe and tchung drums used were made in Senegal, and artists such as Bembeya Jazz National, Super Diamano De Dakar, and Salif Keita are vital influences. Universe Thin As Skin was recorded at the Blue House, where Tom lives with Cerberus Shoal and Big Blood member Caleb Mulkerin, who also recorded the album. The record took about six months to record, as both would meet when they had availability. This is also the main reason Tom played all the instruments on the record. Lyrically the album addresses life in this world in which we find ourselves. There are references to the new physics, an area of interest. “Song for Peter” was written for the brother of a good, good friend whose life hung in the balance (he survived). The nay flute pieces “Kürdi” and “Dulab Bayati” are in traditional Maqams (modes), and “Dulab Bayati” is in a traditional Arabic form. The title track is special because it was written in the living room, just in front of the dining room pictured on the front and back covers of the album. This is the house Tom grew up in, and it is no longer in the family. Tom was a member of the group tarpigh as well as Fire on Fire with Micah Blue Smaldone and members of Cerberus Shoal. He also currently performs with Olas, a group that features two flamenco dancers and original compositions as well as with the Alhan Middle Eastern Classical Music Ensemble. Tom will be touring Europe in the Spring with fellow Immune Recordings artist Micah Blue Smaldone. IMMUNE

Cleared is the duo of Steven Hess and Michael Vallera, both veterans of the Chicago experimental underground. With their new album Drown, Cleared integrate elements of minimalism and sound design with the textures and spirit of early dream pop. Recorded and produced in Chicago, Drown weaves seamlessly between works of classic ambience and narcotic experimental rock. The band find themselves at the crux of both the light and dark components of their past material. The result is a truly lush and enveloping experience that is the sum of the band’s evolving style and approach to composition. Drown is the band’s third full-length recording and the final installment of a trilogy that was conceived upon their formation in 2009. Hess and Vallera have spent the last several years building upon the stark and wintery environment of their first self-titled LP, transforming the tracks through live performance and constant revision. Their second offering, Breaking Day, saw the duo expand beyond the relentless drones and clouded rhythms of the previous record, elevating the role of traditional guitar and percussion while leaning toward a darkly psychedelic and visceral sound. While Cleared have always favored patient growth and repeated themes, those core elements are now adorned with intense melodic composition and spontaneous bursts of electronic collage. Their most expansive and organic release to date, Cleared are proud to offer Drown as the apex of a five-year exploration of image, space, and sound. Steven Hess is a Chicago based musician who also performs in Locrian (Relapse Records), Pan-American (Kranky), Innode (Editions Mego), and Haptic (Entr’acte). Michael Vallera is a musician and visual artist who performs as COIN (Opal Tapes), and with Joseph Clayton Mills as Maar (Entr’acte, Umor Rex). He has also released material under his own name with Los Discos Enfantasmes, Catholic Tapes, and will be contributing to the Imaginational Anthem compilation this summer on Tompkins Square. IMMUNE

It started out as live tribute last November. Lenny Kaye, Arto Lindsay, Voidoids’ Ivan Julian and others convened at NYC’s Bowery Electric to pay homage to the late, great Lou Reed. The Queens-based roots-rock band Hollis Brown were also invited to perform the Velvet Underground’s 1970 album Loaded in its entirety. What began as live memorial to a fallen legend has now been preserved on wax for the ages. Hollis Brown Gets Loaded finds the foursome turning in earthy studio takes on all 10 of perhaps the VU’s most accessible tracks. From the cocky strut of classics such as “Sweet Jane” and “Rock & Roll” to the lovely balladry of “New Age,” “I Found A Reason” and the pile-driving rock of “Head Held High”, Hollis Brown pays homage to this time-honored album with takes that don’t stray too far from the originals, yet still unfold as beautiful new songs with their own unmistakable rootsy approach. And not unlike the running order of the tracks - which goes from last to first, opening with “Oh! Sweet Nuthin’” and closing with “Who Loves The Sun” - this is one great young NYC rock band putting a refreshing new spin on, arguably, the greatest of NYC rock bands.

“More Primitive” finds Seattle’s Lonesome Shack exploring the depths of boogie and country blues. The trio’s sound is raw and immediate with finger-picked guitar lines, soulful crooning and big danceable grooves. Ben Todd’s introspective lyrics take the American blues tradition to a new level, examining personal history, loss of friends, and a burning desire to get to the primitive core of life. The band began in New Mexico’s Gila Wilderness where Ben Todd hunkered down in the shack he built and studied the music of the American folk and blues lineage. In 2008 Todd joined up with drummer Kristian Garrard in Seattle, and in 2011 bassist Luke Bergman became the third member. Over the years Lonesome Shack has selfreleased three LPs, one EP, a cassette, and completed various US tours. ALIVE0159-1 • BOX : 30 LPs BAR CODE : 095081015913 SRLP : $17.99 • ROCK

idée fixe BRY WEBB FREE WILL Bry Webb has written and recorded an album entitled Free Will. A record about responsibility, love, work, desire, art and will. Webb’s second solo album is more deliberate and insistent than ever. He is a man whose steady, ragged voice draws shapes in freehand. His lyrics are like strings of knots: you apprehend them, slowly unravel them, couldn’t ever understand how they were tied. Sometimes Free Will is weary, other times it’s defiant. It reminds one of Smog’s A River Ain’t Too Much To Love, Leonard Cohen’s Songs From A Room, Gillian Welch’s Time (The Revelator), and the Silver Jews’ Natural Bridge. Produced with Jeff McMurrich (Jennifer Castle, Owen Pallett, Sandro Perri), it’s also a recording by some true-hearted human beings playing music in rooms in Toronto and Guelph, Ontario. It is Webb and his friends Rich Burnett (lap steel, guitar, vocals), Aaron Goldstein (pedal steel), Anna Ruddick (bass, vocals) and Nathan Lawr (drums). There are guests like the singer Jennifer Castle, pianist Thomas Hammerton, and the experimental hurdy-gurdy player Ben Grossman. The Artist Tracks 1. Fletcher 2. AM Blues 3. Positive People 4. Prove Me Wrong 5. Let’s Get Through Today 6. What Part Of You 7. Policy 8. Translator 9. Big Smoke 10. Free Will *. Receive Me *. Someplace I’m Supposed To Be
Webb first entered the public eye as lead singer of Constantines who recently announced a reunion tour and reissue of their 2003 classic Shine A Light. After the band went into hiatus in 2010, Webb returned to his one time home of Guelph and began work on Provider, released in 2012 by Idée Fixe. Webb’s artistic endeavors as a solo artist have also included an original song commissioned for This American Life, a collaboration with longtime friend Feist on her album Metals, and scoring the film This Beautiful City for which his song Big Smoke received a Genie Award nomination. Webb has also worked on scoring the Discovery Channel’s series The National Parks Project with Jim Guthrie, Sarah Harmer and filmmaker Scott Smith.

Artist: Laraaji Title: Celestial Music 1978 - 2011 5.20.2014 WAST036LP
Overview “highlights the man's outstanding musical trajectory and achievements - transcendent and gorgeous music that combines gritty experimentation with an otherwise dreamlike musical palette” – Other Music (reissues of the year) Laraaji, is a musician, mystic and laughter meditation practitioner based in New York City. He began playing music on the streets in the 1970s, improvising trance-inducing jams on a modified autoharp processed through various electronic effects. Brian Eno saw him playing one night in Washington Square Park and invited him to record an album for his seminal Ambient series (Ambient 3: Day Of Radiance, released 1980). Laraaji went onto release a prolific series of albums for a wide variety of labels, many of which he recorded himself at home and sold as cassettes during his street performances. In recent years he has been collaborating with a new generation of underground musicians, such as the 2011 album he recorded for the acclaimed FRKWYS series with Blues Control (That Healing Feeling). As well as the reissues of his music on All Saints, in the past year he has been included on Light In The Attic compilation I Am The Center: Private Issue New Age Music In America 1950 - 1990, and been a live guest of Deerhunter and Jonathan Wilson.

INFORMATION:
The last few years have seen Chicago footwork rise to international success, and Traxman’s debut album - ‘The Mind of Traxman’ on Planet Mu - played no small part in that. It showcased Cornelius Ferguson’s brilliant ability to synthesise the beat digging of classic hip hop with the highspeed abstraction of Footwork’s house-derived beat science. The selection of tracks on this second chapter show a slightly different take on Traxman's abilities. Instead of bringing in concepts from other genres, he simply creates a wider variety of Footwork, made with a minimal, reduced palette. Often just one or two samples are selected and diced into brain-blurring cubist puzzles that bear little relation to their original sources, or anything else for that matter.
TRACK LISTING: 01 TIME SLIP 02 BLOW YOUR WHISTLE (THA OUT OF HERE REMIXX) 03 NOTHING STAYS THE SAME 04 MIC 05 COMPUTER GETTO 06 MAKE LOVE TO ME 07 BUBBLES 08 LET IT ROLL GETO 09 EVER AND ALWAYS 10 UNDER COVER JACK 11 CAN NUTIN HOLD ME BACK 12 15416 13 GONE AND HIT THAT SHIT 14 I NEED TOO DO IT (FT. DJ FRED) 15YOUR JUST MOVIN 16 THA EDGE OF PANIC 17 I WANNA BE HIGH 18 U GOT ME RUNNIN (REMIXX)
A number of the tracks here show off the high-speed micro-edited possibilities of Footwork, that end up bringing the sound closer to a faster, hands-on, mpc-punched version of micro-house, bringing out a jagged, fitful character that keeps you on your toes. Tracks like ‘Time Slip’ echo SND, but cut with hip hop breaks and flying snares, while ‘Blow Your Whistle (Tha Out Of Here Remixx)’ chops up a short vocal and whistle noise to ridiculously energetic effect. Other tracks pull on a techno edge, ‘Computer Getto’s galloping game of hide and seek with Kraftwerk, ‘Bubbles‘ electronic arcade game blips, or ‘Under Cover Jack‘s 303 groove, remind one of the house origins of this music, while ‘Can Nutin Hold Me Back’ has a leg in soul’s history, with its detached accapella chopped into twitchy choruses. Later on ‘15146’ cuts up barked numbers over sprightly woodwind while ‘Gone and Hit that Shit’ reduces words to rhythmic shapes, darting around meaning. ‘The Edge of Panic’ is an unexpected and incredibly aggressive detour into Footwork x Speed Metal that could be a micro-genre of its own. We catch our breath with ‘I Wanna Be High’ before the album ends with the gentle bass and chopped jazz drums of ‘U Got Me Running (Remixx)’. The mind of Traxman dazzles again. Traxman, a.k.a. Corky Strong, real name Cornelius Ferguson, is a Chicago Footwork veteran whose discography also includes many classic Ghetto House and Juke releases going as far back as the mid '90s with music on labels like the legendary Dance Mania. He's worked as a DJ for over three decades and was a member of the Geto DJz and Ghetto Teknitianz crews alongside two other Footwork scene leaders, DJ Rashad and DJ Spinn. He describes his style as "funky, soulful and a bit eccentric." PLANET MU RECORDS WWW. PLANET.MU TWITTER.COM/PLANETMURECORDS DISTRIBUTION: REDEYE TOM@PLANET.MU

INFORMATION: DJ Rashad has been instrumental to the creation and evolution of Chicago Juke music. He has the ability to blend elements of house, ghetto house, disco, juke, and ghetto tech together with a knack for creating sparse, snappy tracks that manage to convey a physicality and funk with spectacular precision. This EP from 2010 is the precursor to his Double Cup album on Hyperdub, with 6 tracks that cut across and utilise styles, with effective and synapse snapping style. ‘Itz not Rite’ builds from a half speed chopped up hip hop speed track into a double speed hyper-rhythmic monster. ‘Teknitianz' is panicky in mood, playing sirens over pounding, militant drums, while ‘10 on Da Cush’ contrasts spacey smooth jazz samples with pumping drums and bass. A: ITZ NOT RITE, TEKNITIAN, 10 ON DA CUSH B: WHO DA COLDEST, BABY, RASHAD
After 2011’s widely acclaimed album 'Severant', Kuedo returns with this emotionally epic, dancefloor detonator of a track from the same sessions. 'Work, Live & Sleep In Collapsing Space' starts with huge symphonic synths, halfspeed kicks, trap style hi-hats rushes and flammed 808 snares, slowly building up with giant whooshes of gaseous noise before breaking out into an intense trancey Moroder-esque synth that totally fills the track, making it sound absolutely vast and a little bit frightening, running it through effects to give it an aggressive, spacey rush that takes your breath away. US artist Laurel Halo takes the track apart for the remix, adding sutured strings and bubbling sounds inside a pressurised dub space, before dropping a gorgeous, bittersweet melody into the space that’s left. Championed by Gilles Peterson, the highly talented young Floating Points deliver two slices of psychedelic soul and aynthfunk squiggles on this their debut 12" for Planet Mu. Underpinned by squashed up 2-step rhythms and compressed hip hop drums, this is on par with anything by Hud Mo or Mike Slott. Having released one 7" so far (For You/Radiality on their own and Alex Nut's Eglo imprint), they are destined to become big players in the emerging scene. A: J&W BEAT B: K&G BEAT

AUK112CD / AUK112LP CD LP (180GRM) CD: $14.99 LP : $23.99 20TH May 2014 ‘a’ Records CD: 5055300381644 LP: 5055300381651 ROCK
Available on 180 gram vinyl The Blue Angel Lounge sign to Anton Newcombe’s (The Brian Jonestown Massacre) label ‘A’ Recordings (Dirty Beaches, Dead Skeletons, KVB) 2014 sees the return of The Blue Angel Lounge with their 3rd studio album “A Sea Of Trees”, released on May 2nd. Since the release of their previous album ‘Narcotica’, the band have been garnering international acclaim, touring the US, UK and France with the Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and also making appearances at the Austin Psych Fest and Roskilde. “A Sea Of Trees” sees the band blossom into its own, incorporating the experimentation of their most recent EP and Single releases (“Ewig” 2012, “Walls” 2013). From the very first moment of ‘A Sea Of Trees’, the epic opening track ‘Winter’ wastes no time sonically detailing where the band has been. The bands weapons of choice, guitars coupled with harmonium and singer Nils Ottensmeyer’s powerful Nico’esque vocals culminate in genre-bending territory belonging to them alone. The album marks the bands first worldwide release via Anton Newcombe’s (The Brian Jonestown Massacre) ‘A’ Recording label. Mr. Newcombe joined The Blue Angel Lounge on stage in support of their last record, and most recently invited them to support them on The Brian Jonestown Massacre’s 2012 American tour to rave reviews. The Blue Angel Lounge formed in 2006, after meeting at school in their German village Hohenlimburg near the Rhine River. Led by singer Nils “O.” Ottensmeyer and Dennis Melster, the band took their name from the club in New York City that in the 1960’s offered Nico her first live performances in America. Nico and The Velvet Underground would remain an underlying influence on the band. ‘A Sea Of Trees’ was recorded between 2013 and 2014 at Funkhaus-studio and Studio H1-3 Nalepastrasse, Berlin. Mixed at A Recordings Studio, Berlin. Produced, recorded and mixed by Fabien Leseure and The Blue Angel Lounge.

Available on Tri Colour 180 gram vinyl February 2014 saw the band release their “Back To Bagarmossen” EP on London/Stockholm indie label PNKSLM Recordings. The 10” vinyl received huge praise both internationally and at home, even picking up mainstream TV coverage on Sweden’s TV4. Following the EP, Les Big Byrd are now preparing to unleash their debut full length release, “They Worshipped Cats”, on Anton Newcombe’s A Records. When Anton recently visited Stockholm with his band The Brian Jonestown Massacre, the guys accidentally ran into each other at a local record shop, and started talking about music. Anton invited the band down to his studio in Berlin to record and jam for a few days and it was there that a big part of "They Worshipped Cats" was conceived and recorded. The album is filled with beautifully melancholic melodies, poems of time-space continuum read through vocoders, cosmic clouds of filtered stringmachines, motorik krautrock drums, 12-string . Les Big Byrd was formed in Stockholm by Joakim Åhlund and Frans Johansson a couple of years ago. Joakim was brought up in the late seventies by an immigrant mom in Bagarmossen, a Stockholm suburb where kids sniffed glue in the concrete basements, and the local smalltime gangsters did drive-by's long before Sweden even knew what the phrase meant. At the same time, Frans grew up in the very north of Sweden in a small town with 9 months of winter and darkness every year. They each eventually joined different rock bands that brought them out of Sweden and into a different world, and took them across Japan, England, Europe and America. Frans' band Fireside, got signed by Rick Rubin to his label Def American and Jocke had a taste of international success with 60's-influenced garage-pop outfit Caesars, as well as his other, more electronically flavored project Teddybears. Years later, Frans and Jocke met up again after both Caesars and Fireside had crashed and burned due to drug-fueled intrigues, road-weariness, bad management or complete lack thereof. They decided that they still - in spite of everything - had their love for music intact, and the dream in common to get the perfect band together and give it one more shot. They recruited Jocke's former bandmate, drummer Nino Keller and keyboardist Konie and started jamming and rehearsing. Joakim had been running a recording studio in Stockholm, writing and producing for Swedish and international artists, including Robyn and Håkan Hellström, and had also directed music videos for prominent Swedish exports such as Bob Hund, Refused, Broder Daniel and The International Noise Conspiracy. Keyboardist Konie also runs a studio in Stockholm, where he's been recording a number of film scores as well as many of Swedens most interesting black metal acts.

RED FACE BOY b/w PILLOWS In May of 2012, a man called Howard Ivans (aka Ivan Howard of The Rosebuds, GAYNGS) stopped by Spacebomb's attic studio to record two tracks. Side A, “Red Face Boy,” is a blistering journey through the madness and insecurity of love, feet on the floor, glossy ‘n raw. Tight Virginia funk with obvious nods to the city formerly known as Minneapolis. Side B, “Pillows,” is a honeyed dream ballad, the trademark Spacebomb sound draped in silk: ravishing strings, stinging horns, and above all, an insistent and persuasive rhythm section. This is bedroom music and party music, music for the wedding and the honeymoon, for work or play or swimming through the city at night. This is the music of Spacebomb & Howard Ivans, the music of our minds.

New album from Toronto’s Picastro. "You" is the follow up to 2010's 'Become Secret'. Picastro began in 1998 when the Toronto music scene was predominately catering to loud rock bands with Liz Hysen, Stephanie Vittas and Kurt Newman. Since then, the band has continued in many forms with its current band members consisting of Liz Hysen, Brandon Valdivia and Nick Storring. Commanding influences as varied as gypsy field recordings, Greek rembetika, Russian folksongs, Faces, and Black Sabbath, Toronto's Picastro craft starkly discordant soundscapes where murmured vocals cascade alongside a rich panorama of dissonance and stringladen dynamics. The band have toured extensively over the past 10 years alongside the likes of Scout Niblett, Nadja, Cerberus Shoal, Xiu Xiu, Devendra Banhart, Marissa Nadler, Dwayne Sodahberk, Broken Social Scene and many other wonderful artists across North America and Europe as well as appearing on BBC radio and the influential WFMU. Picastro has also played a number of festivals including SXSW .

RICK SPRINGFIELD :
WORKING CLASS DOG
CANDY227 / 5055300381729 Recorded at Sound City in L.A , with a production by Rick Springfield, Bill Drescher and Fleetwood Mac producer, Keith Olsen, the album exploded out of the box to become one of the biggest selling records of the year, eventually achieving three million units. In addition, the single ‘Jessie’s Girl’ reached #1 on the charts, helping to define his clean cut pop rock style and providing a watershed mark for the rest of his career. Penning nine of the ten songs himself, it was left to fellow rocker Sammy Hagar to provide the second hit single taken from this record, ‘I’ve Done Everything For You’, a song originally written in 1977, but not recorded at that time. As near a perfect a pop rock album as you could wish for, ‘Working Class Dog’ set the standard for radio friendly rock for much of the eighties. Love Is Alright Tonight; Jessie’s Girl; Hole In My Heart; Carry Me Away; I’ve Done Everything For You; The Light Of Love; Everybody’s Girl; Daddy’s Pearl; Red Hot & Blue Love; Inside Silvia – Bonus Tracks: Easy To Cry; Taxi Dancing (Original version); Jessie’s Girl (Demo version)
RICK SPRINGFIELD ROCK OF LIFE
CANDY228 / 5055300381736 ‘Rock Of Life’ was, in many ways, a continuance of the themes touched on with previous album ‘Tao’. Songs such as ‘Honeymoon In Beirut’, ‘World Start Turning’, ‘Woman’ and the title track, are profoundly poignant, confessional and focus on specific personal issues. But whilst the lyrical content may be heavy, the musical support is anything but. Produced to pin -point accuracy by long-time collaborator Keith Olsen, the music is seriously upbeat, dynamic and very cutting edge, in fact it’s is generally regarded as one of the best sounding albums of the era. Issued in 1988, ‘Rock Of Life’ may not have been a chart smash but it definitely helped to quash any thoughts that he may have been just a pretty face with little to say. Rock Of Life; Honeymoon In Beirut; World Start Turning; One Reason (To Believe); Soul To Soul; Tear It All Down; Woman; Dream In Colour; Hold On To Your Dream; (If You Think You’re) Groovy Bonus Tracks: The Language Of Love; Rock Of Life (Extended Mix)
FULL UGLY—SPENT THE AFTERNOON BEDROOM SUCK CD JEWEL BSR046CD 809236104663 $15.99 Full Ugly is primarily a vehicle for the song writing of Melbourne native, Nathan Burgess. With the line-up now rounded out to a four-piece, affording Burgess's almost naïve country-rock sensibility a more exploratory feel. The album was recorded and mixed by Jack Farley (Twerps, Panel of Judges, Beaches) whose naturalistic approach suited the band well and the album was finished quickly and with little fuss. It is a product completely of and for Melbourne; those trademark sunlit guitars shine over a slow and comfortable groove, life is documented in a way that allows true insight into the flourishing music scene in which Full Ugly now find themselves at the fore. It is a disarming record, sincere and shabbily endearing. Melodies lope along toward a greater destination, a summer breeze runs through the studio and is captured in the rhythm of these songs. 1. Drove Down 2. Hanging Around 3. No Plans 4. Mount Barker 5. Smug S. 6. Oh Daddy 7. Summertime 8. Nervous 9. Hilly Street 10. Spent the Afternoon
WRECKLESS ERIC ~ THE DONOVAN OF TRASH FIRE VINYL LP+DL FIRELP322 809236132215 $25.99 The Donovan Of Trash is a truly punk record; a DIY, lo-fi milestone containing some of Wreckless Eric's finest songs, a fact sadly overlooked at the time of its original release in 1993 by fans and critics unable to get beyond the harsh, weird and often dissonant sound to discover the beauty within. This Fire Records reissue, remastered and repackaged under Eric's direction will do much to rectify this lamentable oversight. More fractured and frenetic than his preceding album, Le Beat Group Électrique, The Donovan Of Trash makes Eric's earlier, supposedly punk/new wave recordings sound positively middle of the road by comparison. He used the same recording equipment as on Le Beat Group Électrique - a Teac 1/4" four track tape recorder and an ancient WEM Audiomaster five channel mixing desk plus a variety of two track tape machines and discarded studio junk rescued from recording suite refurbishments during the 1980s. 1. Birthday Blues 2. Duvet Fever 3. Joe Meek 4. The Consolation Prize 5. Semi-Porno Statuette 6. School 7. The Extra Bonus Track 8. The Nerd/Turkey Song 9. Lureland 10. Harrys Flat 11. Haunted House 12. If It Makes You Happy 13. Paris In June
The truly eggstraordinary Lovely Eggs! Described as unhinged, strange, bizarre, cuckoo and howling mad; and you'd be crazy not to fall with their army of fans in love with their underground grunge-pop sound. Inspired by everyday life, coupled with a fierce ethos that music should be about magic and art and feeling and fun, the Lancashire, UK duo have more in common with writer Richard Brautigan & artist David Shrigley than they do with their musical peers. Occasionally satirical and often surreal The Lovely Eggs won't deliver a straight forward love song to your door, instead you’ll be taken on a journey into Holly & David’s world where there are no seatbelts! We will be issuing all 3 albums on Egg Records on May 20th in the USA. Greg at Planetary Group will be doing the press and radio for the American release.

Brett Brett Debut Album on 12” vinyl, May 20
Blurring the line between pop aesthetics and studio science, Brett reps Washington, D.C. and makes music that celebrates the contrast between bright melodies and stark lyrics. The album is arguably Cascine’s stickiest, most immediate release to date. Crafted of dynamic, honest and mature songs, lovers of ageless pop will find much to appreciate in both the familiar constructs of this sound and in its alluring thematic qualities. Martin Wind Quartet feat. Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigiana
Turn out the Stars – Music written or inspired by Bill Evans Martin Wind’s ‘Turn out the Stars’ is more than a mere “tribute” album. At the heart of the project is a tremendous quartet: Martin on bass, Scott Robinson on tenor saxophone, Bill Cunliffe on piano, and Bill Evans alumnus Joe La Barbera on drums. In addition, we see another side of Martin Wind – that of orchestral arranger. He did most of the work here, and achieved a nuanced balance between the orchestra and the quartet. It’s as if the whole quartet were the solo instrument, accompanied by, supported by, and sometimes confronted by the larger ensemble. Wind, Robinson, Cunliffe and La Barbera – by themselves they form a great quartet. Put them in partnership with the marvelous Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigiana, conducted by Massimo Morganti and you have a glorious celebration of Bill Evans the pianist, composer, leader, and musical spirit. We already knew that Evans’ music would never die. But enriched by Martin Wind’s orchestral vision and the passionate energy of the quartet, this album gives it a welcome new voice.” –

")' "!.$ -).) *!:: 47/5"!$/5 3/5.$3 Strut presents HAITI DIRECT, the first in-depth exploration of the vibrant and varied colours of Haiti’s music from the early ‘60s to the late ‘70s. HAITI DIRECT celebrates the overlooked musical legacy of Haiti, going beyond Ra-ra and voodoo stereotypes to trace the development of a unique sound that echoed across the Caribbean. At the dawn of the '60s, as Jamaica twisted American R’n’B into ska and reggae and musicians from Cuba and Puerto Rico codified the sound of Salsa, Haiti gave birth to Compas Direct. an updating of the traditional Meringue rhythm, adapted with a new swing and complex arrangements. The driving sound and irresistible beat of Compas swiftly dominated the French-speaking Caribbean as well as taking root in the urban centres of New York, Paris, Montreal and Miami. As the decade waned, the big band orchestras of Compas-originator Nemours JeanBaptiste and musical rival Webert Sicot gave way to new, smaller groups like Shleu Shleu and Les Frères Déjean. Raw electric guitars, wailing sax lines and driving percussion combined as the groups blended local rhythms with rock and jazz influences, producing a raucous, punchy and densely textured sound that paved the way for the next decade. Into the ‘70s, the Mini-jazz sound had become a major force across the Caribbean and into mainland Europe and South America. Tabou Combo filled New York’s Central Park for a Summer concert and topped the charts in France, bringing the sound of Compas to a new and wider audience. They would eventually form one of the cornerstones of the Zouk wave in the '80s. Compiled by Hugo Mendez, co-founder of the excellent Sofrito label and sound system, HAITI DIRECT features classic material from the early days of groups such as Tabou Combo and Les Freres Déjean as well as rarities from lesser known groups - bringing together the sound of Compas with Latin workouts, psychedelic experiments and the Cuban influenced Twoubadou singers that continued to be a key part of the fabric of Haitian musical life. Featuring in-depth liner notes and interviews with some of the musicians and producers that shaped the sound, HAITI DIRECT is the first widely available compilation to celebrate the unique and innovative sounds of Haiti in the ‘60s and ‘70s.
