about: Born and raised in Los Angeles, Girlpool is a Philadelphia based two piece made up of Cleo Tucker (Guitar) and Harmony Tividad (Bass). The two met at the Los Angeles DIY venue The Smell and quickly grew very close. Their sound is raw, comprised only of a guitar, bass and vocal harmonies. Cleo and Harmony use this stripped-down instrumentation to accentuate their vulnerable yet powerful lyrics. After releasing their selftitled EP, Girlpool relocated to Philadelphia at the end of 2014 looking for change of pace and scenery. There they recorded their debut album, Before The World Was Big, with Kyle Gilbride (of Swearin’ and engineer behind Waxahatchee’s Cerulean Salt and Radiator Hospital’s Torch Song). The album explores the concepts of growth, friendship, and the interaction between identity and environment. The introspective-punk duo captures growing pains and existential quandaries with a honest and true intention. radio: Long lead radio set-up via The Syndicate. Album going for ADDS at College/Non-Com in early June. Early station support from KVRX(Austin), KXLU (Los Angeles), KALX (Berkeley), WPRK (Orlando) and WXPN (Philadelphia). Girlpool’s 2014 s/t debut EP charted Top 20 at CMJ Radio 200 for 5 weeks peaking at #8 with solid support form 85+ stations nationwide. publicity: Long lead campaign via Grandstand PR launched around CMJ 2014. CHRIS STAMEY EUPHORIA
RELEASE DATE (DC/LP): 06/02/15 “To me, euphoria lives inside an electric guitar,” Chris Stamey says of his new Yep Roc release. “That’s a place I find freedom, passion, exhilaration: in the spaces between the notes, in the distance between the frets.” Euphoria is a distinctly compelling entry in a body of work that already contains a startling amount of acknowledged classics and underappreciated gems. As solo artist and founding co-frontman of seminal indie combo The dB’s, the North Carolina-bred singer-songwriter-guitarist has built a beloved and influential catalog that’s earned him a devoted international fan base and established him as a godfather to the Southern alternative pop community. Arriving on the heels of his widely acclaimed 2013 chamber-pop excursion Lovesick Blues and 2012’s long-awaited dB’s reunion album Falling Off the Sky, Euphoria finds Stamey reembracing his electric roots with an emotionally resonant set of rocking, melodically infectious, sonically bracing new tunes, with expansive arrangements incorporating horns and other unexpected sonic textures, and a supporting cast that includes Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub, Pat Sansone of Wilco, Django Haskins of the Old Ceremony and longtime cohort Mitch Easter. “I found these songs inside the same dilapidated old Silvertone lipstick guitar that I’d written my first records on,” Stamey asserts. “Maybe that’s why it sounds a bit like those records in some ways.” While Euphoria’s songs carry echoes of Stamey’s earliest work, they also explore some unfamiliar sonic and compositional territory. “The songs sound simple, but I’ve been listening to Gershwin and Cole Porter, and trying to use chord changes in places where, on other records, I might have used echo or mixing tricks,” he says. “On songs like ‘Where Does the Time Go?’ and ‘Make Up Your Mind,’ it seems like the parts repeat, but actually they’re shifting around all the time, with little modulations and variations. I’m finding new places to go.” For the wistful, bittersweet “Invisible,” Stamey, seeking to capture a classic Winston-Salem sound, reunited Easter and Let’s Active drummer Eric Marshall, with Stamey on bass. In addition to Stamey’s own memorable compositions, Euphoria’s highlights include the rousing opening track “Universe-sized Arms,” a previously unreleased Ryan Adams composition that Adams sent to Chris to record. Prestigious as Stamey’s resume is, Euphoria makes it clear that the veteran artist is presently making some of the most vital and expressive music of his career. Overview
WARPCD252/LP252
Shangaan electro innovator Nozinja presents his debut album on Warp Records, an invigorating blast of future-facing dance music from Limpopo, South Africa. Nozinja Lodge sees the producer test the frantic upper limits of Shangaan Electro on white-knuckle, rave-channelling cuts like “Baby Do U Feel Me” and “Vatswelani,” while enjoying the freedom to take his foot off the gas and bring a deeper, lilting touch to his trademark sound on “Vomaseve Hina” and closing track “Jaha”. Featuring a community of Shangaan vocalists alongside Nozinja, the songs take in themes of love, faith and tribal customs - while endlessly chasing the visceral thrill of the dance.
Format: Vinyl Boxlot: 15 Price: $24.99 Packaging: 2xLP with download card
The record has a unique soul, stamped with the spirit of the Shangaan people, their language and musical history. Coming out of South Africa's vibrant post-apartheid cultural landscape but with no clearly discernible peers, Nozinja is a true visionary of the 21st century digital diaspora.

TRAILS AND WAYS PATHOLOGY
bark154 CD/LP+MP3
STREET DATE: JUNE 2, 2015 The sound of Oakland, CA’s Trails and Ways is a fascinating mix of the melancholy of bossa nova, the fearlessness of basement indie rock, driving grooves from the end of disco, and the slick shine of radio pop. Their songs never shy away from personal and political heavy-lifting, but this is some of the most compelling pop music we’ve heard in some time. Call it what you will; hearing it is like stumbling into the warmth of an intimate dance party among smart and thoughtful friends. The band’s four members (Hannah and Keith on guitar, Ian on drums, and Emma on bass) cast off from the co-op houses at UC Berkeley in the depths of the great recession. They headed to live as far afield as Ceará in Brazil and Galicia in Spain before reuniting in Oakland to start the DIY bedroom recording project that became Trails and Ways. When the friends first sent out their early track “Nunca” to a few blogs the zeitgeist must have been blowing through Oakland, and they were staggered by a sudden rush of attention: 70,000 plays in a single day — something rarely seen from an unsigned artist.

This surge of popularity galvanized the band, and wary of becoming another flash-in-the-pan blog sensation they set out with determination to refine their art and take advantage of the unexpected groundswell of support. They quickly got to work crafting a powerful live show, quit their day jobs, ran two national tours, and played festival stages at Outside Lands, Capitol Hill Block Party, and Firefly. Pathology, their debut LP, was recorded at home in Oakland in 2014, amid the unrelenting crawl of the California drought and the surge of tech-company capital in the Bay Area. The album is a work of multiple hands, multiple hearts, and multiple voices — vibrant, emotional, political, and personal.

Written and recorded in the home studio of critically-acclaimed Seattle-via-Brooklyn-via-Los Angeles DIY icon Eric Elbogen, Oohs & Aahs is an extraordinary and consistently witty album of dimly-lit indie-rock fables that ponder the many hues of gloom, lust, and the inevitability and beauty of imperfection. Even for fans of Elbogen’s past work, it’s a marvel of modern post-pop.

Kinski “7 (or 8)” LP / CD / Digital Download Sometimes you just want to play FASTER. For a band whose extensive discography has historically been primarily instrumental and prone to modifying adjectives like “post-“ and “space-“, the last couple of years have been a left turn down a twisted alley of fuzz pedals, blown tube amps, and a kind of raw power befitting of the Stooges. There are quiet moments here and there but you get the feeling they’re only there so the drummer can catch his breath. 7 (or 8) finds Kinski sounding heavier, faster, and even more self-assured, picking up where 2013’s Cosy Moments left off but also pushing their sound into even more singular territory.

7 (or 8), the title itself a wry observation echoing the confusion created by their extensive catalog, is in fact their SEVENTH (or eighth depending who you ask) LP and second for new label home Kill Rock Stars, having previously released several LPs on Sub Pop and other discerning independent labels. Recorded and mixed in San Francisco at El Studio with Phil Manley (of Trans Am), 7 (or 8) comes in the midst of a more prolific period for the band. “It always takes us awhile to write a record but this one came quickly. We’ve stopped worrying about it so much and just get on with it, which is easier on the soul,” says guitarist/singer Chris Martin. This mindset, alongside their newfound lyricism, has revealed a band that is slyly self-aware, hinted at through years of tongue-in-cheek song titles but now fully evident. The quicker pace has also instilled a palpable confidence and energy on record. That being said, 7 (or 8) hits like a ton of bricks. The double helping of riffs in the form of “Detroit Trickle Down” and “Flight Risk” leave the listener nearly out of breath. Martin, Lucy Atkinson (Bass), Matthew ReidSchwartz (Guitar), and Barrett Wilke (Drums) stretch out a bit over the course of the record, marrying their more expansive sound with proto-punk fury, but they rarely let up until the last song, album highlight “Bulletin of the International String Figure Association”. One of the last songs written for the record, “Bulletin…” eases into a nearly 11 minute crescendo of rock bliss, gently flirts with a string section at the same time, and then floats back down to Earth in a perfect denouement. Like John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands on the cover, Kinski strive to make art that is uncompromising and on their own terms and 7 (or 8) is a refreshing reminder that rock music in 2015 can still be a unique and cathartic experience.

Anar Badalov is New Dog, but “Classic Ballroom Dances” is no trick; this intimate and enthralling album is the next installment in the career of this promising young songwriter. Born in Baku, Azerbaijan in the 80s, Anar’s family immigrated to Baltimore, MD during the breakup of the Soviet Union. Anar grew up in Baltimore and was in two notable bands, Metal Hearts and Travels, between 2004 and 2014. With the dissolution of Travels, Anar began working on his own for the first time. “Classic Ballroom Dances,” like the first New Dog album “Lost Weekend,” was recorded alone in his apartment. Anar describes the process: “Not having someone to lean on, musically, is both terrifying and doubly rewarding. You work at your own pace, and set your own rules.” The title was inspired by the poem of the same name by Yugoslavian poet Charles Simic. Simic has said that list poems like Classic Ballroom Dances are “the poetic equivalent of quilt-making.” Long before Anar read this poem or heard of the poet, this was the way he approached songwriting. “I’d like to think that at least a handful of songs on this album capture something like what Simic is talking about,” he says. Simic is one of Anar’s biggest influences. Others include Lee Hazlewood, Frank O'Hara, Mark Linkous, John Berryman, Raymond Carver, Anton Chekhov, Townes Van Zandt and guitarist Mick Turner. www.killrockstars.com

FRANCESCA BELMONTE A N I M A With a slew of spooked, sultry tracks emerging online late last year, Francesca Belmonte slowly but surely emerged as one of the most fascinating new talents out there today, trafficking in her very own distinct vein of freaked pop which seamlessly blended in R n’B, soul, club, electronica, avant-garde and much more to hypnotic effect. Now, with her debut LP “Anima”, Belmonte finally unveils that distinctive vision in full, with a vast and shimmering collection of tracks.
Although Belmonte first got her start singing with legendary experimental artist Tricky, appearing on his “False Idols” and “Adrian Thaws” albums and now signed to his own False Idols imprint, “Anima” sees her develop her own uniquely singular persona. The sombre honest tones in her vocals are wickedly broken up by the beats, synths and electronica of her key collaborator, with the result being a powerful and highly expressive LP filled with passion.

In Elsewhere, the second fulllength album by Moullinex, you get a window into the past’s soul, funk, garage rock, Brazilian music – especially when it comes to percussion and flutes, which have an increasingly important role in its universe – these sounds come together and meet synths bursting with nostalgia for the future, all coexisting in perfect harmony and in such a way that never lets you forget for a second that the music is all coming from the same person. Not to mention, of course, the penchant for dance music and the focus on giving machines a human touch. What changes now is the way it distinguishes itself from Disco and House, which Moullinex has been linked with throughout the years – though it’s still present –, either in his own singles, DJ sets or remixes for artists such as Sébastien Tellier, Röyksopp & Robyn, Cut Copy or Two Door Cinema Club. This said, it would be a gross inaccuracy to
tag him solely as Disco: his sound is much more juicy than that, squeeze it and a lot more will come out. Flora’s successor is about dreams, both in lyrics and music. All sorts of dreams, from the ones that happen when we close our eyes and fall asleep, to those that guide our lives and goals. And how different it can be, after the state of permanent wonder and bedazzlement of childhood, to grow up and not see your dreams come true, in a state of permanent disillusionment. Nonetheless, this theme is approached with the customary dreamy and sunny mood of his music. It’s a tremendously personal subject, which led Luis to do away with guest vocal collaborations for the first time, marking the transformation of Moullinex from someone who used to be more comfortable as a producer, musician and DJ into a fullfledged vocalist.

Roman à Clef Abandonware
“Roman à Clef sound like the second coming of Prefab Sprout” - Obscure Sound From the “raging clock” that marks the beginning of the record, to the poignant self-assessment of the final seconds, Roman à Clef’s Abandonware is a record that plays out like a film, inviting the listener to consider their own lives through the kaleidoscope of stories found within. Rejecting a straightforward narrative in favor of impressionistic passages, the actions (or non-actions) of the characters in Abandonware give the unmistakable impression of New Wave films, or the fiction of Roberto Bolaño, Italo Calvino and Thomas Pynchon. Roman à Clef is Ryan Newmyer (A Sunny Day in Glasgow), Jen Goma (ASDiG), and Kurt Feldman (Ice Choir). When Newmyer began writing the material that would become Abandonware, he endeavored to create deceptively complex songs that would unfold and reveal themselves with repeat listens. This required an exhausting rewriting and revision process, and ultimately, the help of additional talents and perspectives. He found perfect collaborators in fellow ‘80s pop obsessive Kurt Feldman, who brought the songs to life with endlessly lush and inventive production and arrangements, and ASDiG bandmate Jen Goma, whose acrobatic voice and searing wit provide a perfect counterpoint to Newmyer’s bemused baritone. Abandonware is filled with songs that stretch out in unexpected directions, slyly deconstructing conventional song structures at every turn. Verses, choruses and hooks abound, but they do not fall where one might expect. The sprawling compositions provide a home for rich character studies, living lives that look not unlike our own; in turn, warm and humorous, bittersweet and tragic. Blink, and you could miss it. Rewind and repeat, and be rewarded. As in all good stories, the end is the beginning.

OVERVIEW: So, enter the label’s latest LP from Mind Fair’s housier alias The Central Executives, whose project could’ve formed weeks ago, or perhaps be unearthed recordings from a loft party that went a few weeks longer than planned back in ‘87. But regardless of when it was actually recorded, there’s a live-recorded exuberance that’s part Arthur Russell, part ACT UP protest, part disco-punk ensemble ironing out the kinks in their act in some Queens basement with black mould spreading all around the ceiling. Golf Channel has called this record “the back street escapism these troubled times demand”- and maybe escapism is the word that encapsulates the timeless anonymity of my favourite Golf Channel offerings. In any case, A Walk in the Dark is an absolute burner of an LP – there’s not a single moment on it that doesn’t reveal something new with every listen, and for all its retro influences, it’s still packed with surprises. It’s the gruff bodega owner who starts smiling at you after figuring out that you’re queer, but only when no one else is around. It’s smoking inside, it’s someone’s radio blaring out the window, it’s Broadway before Disney bought out all the bars – it’s New York. - Brendan Arnott

Heaven OVERVIEW: Chungking, the pop connoisseur’s favourite, the record collector’s hidden gem, return with their third album Defender on 2nd June 2015. The latest – and self-produced album - from the Brighton based trio captures their slick and sultry grooves, coupled with serious musicianship and above all, the voice and multi-layered harmonies of Jessie Banks. Smooth as silk and tough as steel, its Jessie’s vocal that has come to define Chungking’s signature sound. Chungking’s debut We Travel Fast – on Tim ‘Love’ Lee’s label for party people Tummy Touch - set a career agenda with beautifully crafted, consistent and timeless songs that won the band plaudits across the board. Since it’s release the trio have worked with pop overlord Richard X and WARP records’ techno-soulman Jamie Lidell, while Jessie - by special request – has provided vocals both live and recorded for Royksopp and Air. They were among the very first to be remixed by the mighty Hot Chip. Classic, deep-rooted songwriting, Defender places them somewhere in a miraculous zone between Kate Bush, The Bee Gees and the ‘Drive’ soundtrack – it’s an album that could only have been made by people utterly in love with pop music. Sapphire, the first release from Defender, was “written for a best friend who I travelled the world with, then lost” says Ben. “It took a year to finish and by the end it was a little bit about my girl too. It’s all about loving someone but knowing that ultimately you never really know them…” Jessie, Sean Hennessy and Ben Townsend have woven a melancholic sweetness through ‘Sapphire’ resulting in a track that moves with the softness of a lullaby and the hazy weight of a broken heart at sunrise. With Defender, Chungking continue their legacy; able to take in everything from The Carpenters to Vashti Bunyan, psychedelic soul to Italo- disco and still, and after seven years away, managing to sound completely and unmistakably Chungking to the core. The anthemic lead single, ‘Children of The Stars’ will be released the same day. ‘Children of the stars’ is a rose tinted look back at the bands’ youth, relating to 90’s kids alike who wish to live in that period of time forever. Taking heavy inspiration from Australian electro pop – the track offers a slightly different flavour to their previous releases. Lyrically, it juxtaposes the theme of impatience, a theme that runs throughout the entirety of ‘Don’t Wait ‘Til Tomorrow’, offering a slightly different songwriting approach.

Brooklyn indie stalwarts Shark? have a new EP Debbie and Becky. The titular couple are guinea pigs and star on the EP's cover art, which you can check out below. The first track released from the EP is "Hate Crime Girl" that was inspired by a couple different things. Part of it was by the work of controversial artist Chris Burden, whose most infamous piece was being shot in the arm with a 22 caliber rifle. (His work has inspired songs by David Bowie and Laurie Anderson, too.) The title, though, came from a real life encounter when guitarist Jared Hiller met a girl after they both had the unfortunate experience of witnessing a man getting beaten with a baseball bat. “Cue the light wash denim jeans and tattoo chokers because Heyrocco’s new album launches us right into 90’s teenage movie nostalgia. Like these Southern sweethearts, we admittedly might not have been the coolest kids in high school—but at least we can pretend like we were while listening to some 90’s inspired rock and roll.” NYLON NME claimed their debut single ‘Virgin’ “mimics the angst-ridden grunge of Nirvana, while flecks of Pavement ensure a distinctly nostalgic flavor to these guitar heroes”, and Clash Magazine stated was “set in high school, with its corrosive mixture of The Cure and Mudhoney conjuring up all manner of adolescent fury.” OFR – 075 Street Date: 6/2/15 Formats: LP/CD LP SRP: $18.99 LP UPC: 634457690110 Box Lot: 10 Vinyl Not Returnable CD SRP: 12.99 CD UPC: 634457690127 Box Lot: 30 Genre: Indie, Alternative Hometown: Charleston, SC LP: CD:

A1 – Arruda A2 – Abacaxi Limão B1 – Legume B2 – Cheetah B3 – Alagarta
$15.99 BOX LOT = 25
STREET DATE: 6 /2 / 2015 A couple of years have passed and a ton of material has been amassed after the sold out "Ouro Oeste EP". It's a given fact from the very beginning that Niagara are a prolific bunch. From their HQ to the north of Lisbon, the trio puts together some of the most organically synthetic house music we hear these days. May sound like a contradiction but bear in mind practically everything you hear on this EP is played live (including a most charismatic electric bass). Even the final mix is done live. "Arruda" has an infectious vocal snippet leading procedures, morphing from an indistinguishable bleep into a recognizable voice. Discreet and stylish use of string sounds and tambourine, a bassline made up of a repeated "acid" pattern plus the usual chunky midtempo signature beat. "Arruda" happens to be the surname of brothers Alberto and Antonio, joined in Niagara by Sarah Eckerman; "Abacaxi Limão" introduces live bass as the anchor of the whole groove, wild background percussion, and those chunky chunky beats add a robotic step. By now it's quite clear how Niagara sound like; "Legume" opens side B with a small burst of distortion. Then it's all about the interplay between the deepest bass and playful keys. Everything becomes more spacey and pastoral on the second half, culminating with a flute comedown; "Cheetah" sounds like a lost Chicago classic, never giving in to smoothness. It's familiar but also hard to pinpoint. Major contribution to the hypnosis induced by these moderately slow but hard-stepping beats; "Alagarta" shoots out with a million rays of sunlight in a joyous manifestation of happiness on the dancefloor, though it is far from being the typical functional dance track. It's here that the live production ethics of Niagara are clearly perceptible and we can't help but show a broad smile when the cascade of bleeps leads to the conclusion. Complex, glorious shit. > Limited first pressing > Individually hand-painted sleeves > Recorded and mixed live by Niagara

NNA is very proud to present our second release from Canadian hero Alexander Moskos’ Drainolith project. Following up 2012’s “Fighting!” full length LP (Spectrum Spools), “Hysteria” reaches new levels in the Draino sound world, resulting in his most fully realized record to date. Moskos has spent years marinating solo in the cold Northern underground, cutting his chops as lead axegrinder with Montreal-based noise punks AIDS Wolf, and most recently rolling with North American all-star clan Dan’l Boone. “Hysteria” is the result of nearly two years spent in various studios with producers and fellow ‘Boone brothers Nate Young (Wolf Eyes) and Neil Hagerty (Royal Trux), working diligently together to take a few steps beyond Trip Metal and extract the skeleton out of “rock”, inserting it into a newer, much weirder, humanoid skin. The epicenter of this sound rests humbly on the foundation of guitar and voice, two facets of sound that Moskos has carefully cultivated through years of experimentation and digestion from a wide array of musical influences. The relaxed, loose, and energetically electric technique of guitar playing is reinforced by Drainolith’s unrivaled tone, which has morphed throughout the years but now stands alone atop a mountain of shredders. It is ripe with Bluesy fuzziness and the humanity of Americana, while punctuated by the gritty stab of 80’s death metal, and further rounded out with a sprinkling of EVH-esque chorus zones and free jazz adventurousness. The result is a sound that pre-dates the internet in a fabulous way. Each note seems to leave behind a glistening impression like a spot of grease on a pizza box. A tone as unique as this is only bolstered by the vocal delivery, the literal voice of the Mind of Moskos. This beautifully cold, dripping baritone is unmistakable, it’s fried-yet-poetic articulation recalling a halfway point between a melting Dylan and a blazed Robert Ashley. Over-tired, over-wired, and over it. Moskos lets every word kerplunk into a mesmerizing puddle of observation, giving something as mundane as staring out the window or a Vancouver hotel foyer the poignancy of a published work. With guitar and voice at the core, the additional instrumentation on “Hysteria” is the bizarre glue that binds it all together, using the palette of electronics, keys, and haphazardly triggered beats and percussion in an intensely layered fashion to ensure maximum disorientation. The compositions are fully stacked, allowing little room for sparseness or tender moments. Tracks like “Qix” stagger forward in a deranged manner, it’s elastic percussion hearkening back to purple Nike foot-pounding of 2011’s “Where Are Ye Col. Leslie Groves?” cassette and the “one man band” era, for those of us fortunate enough to witness Drainolith’s live experience. Other tracks like “Joy Road” burn on patiently, disintegrating piece by piece into the ether of time amid a bed of Fender Rhodes eeriness... almost like a rare Canadian B-side to the Lizard King’s “An American Prayer”. Blues notions are confronted by Beastie-esque guitar stabs, smeared together with repetitive, angular riff rotations and flailing synth filigree, creating a densely-layered intensity that feels like the anxiety of standing in a rat’s nest of instrument cables and leaky pipe water in a moist basement. Pleasant melody is of little interest here, instead thriving on dissonance and reminding us of the OGs of post-punk, when rock met experimentation and abstraction head on, shoving a properlygreased square peg into a circular hole. While thematically cryptic, “Hysteria” drops rough clues to the heart of it’s content, filled with tales of Quebec biker wars, sinking into couches, Detroit street hassles, sneaker worship, sidewalk slush, sexual desire and seasonal affect disorder. At it’s heart, “Hysteria” is the product of a musician who has much love for the past, but also little interest in recreating it. It is a song cycle that reflects the complexities of our day to day world through the psyche of the modern jammer, fueled by the quintessentially Moskosian diet of caffeine and nicotine. Someone who isn’t content sitting stagnant in a crowd of tradition, and who acknowledges that radical ideas are necessary to propel things into the future. Label: Primary Records Release Date: 6/2/2015 File Under: Lofi Experimental Folk Catalog Number: PR019 Title: Remember When Things Were Better Tomorrow Artist: Jonah Parzen-Johnson
“Nostalgia can seem comforting, but I think it should be incredibly unsettling.... maybe that’s what I should’ve titled the album,” says Brooklyn based baritone saxophonist, Jonah Parzen-Johnson, of his first album-lengthed collection of songs for solo saxophone and analog synthesizer. He thinks a lot about titles. “I wrote these songs around the idea that the best period in my generation’s lifespan was gone, but after a few nights on the road, looking people in the eye with that idea in mind, I saw how lazy I was being. It doesn’t feel good to be devoting so much time to counting the ways we’ve failed, and ignoring the hundreds of little ways I could be fixing this mess. I’ve had the same conversation all over the country. Its time to stop drowning in nostalgia, and start finding ways to make our lives about repairing our broken systems. That’s what I was thinking about when I was getting ready to play these songs in the studio.”
Track Listing
1. I Keep Thinking Sit Down 2. If You Can’t Sleep, Just Shut Your Eyes 3. Never Stop Counting 4. Eyes Like Paddles 5. I Wrote A Story About You Without You 6. Stay There, I’ll Come To You 7. On The Way Home (Neil Young Cover) Press Quotes “The ideal soundtrack to a scene in an offbeat indie where the two protagonists come together and have violent weird-sex followed by tender snuggles.” - Noisey (Music By Vice) “A far-ranging solo performance.” - The New York Times “His unaccompanied playing captures the sentiment of an old Polaroid, long-ago happiness fading into the melancholy of memory.” - Philadelphia City Paper “A folk music for a new tribe of people, one that has access to new technologies and uses them as opposed to being used by them.” - All About Jazz Format: LP, CD, Digital SLP: $17.99 (LP), $9.99 (CD) Barcodes: 616892256659 (LP), 616892256540 (CD) jonahpj.com - primaryrecords.org
Jonah plays lofi experimental folk music for solo baritone saxophone and analog synthesizer. Imagine the raw energy of an Appalachian choir, balanced by a fearlessly exposed saxophone voice, resting on a strikingly unique combination of analog synthesizer components sitting on the floor in front of him. It all breathes together, as Jonah uses his feet to weave square and sawtooth waves into a surging base for folk inspired saxophone melodies, overblown multi phonics, vocalizations, and patiently developed circular breathing passages. Every element is performed and recorded at the same time, by one person, without any looping, overdubbing or recorded samples. “I want to make music that has texture, and depth, but most of all I want it to be direct and grounded. Performing completely live with all analog instruments, helps with that. For me, playing solo is all about being connected to the folks listening. I want you to feel like I’m looking you in the eye while I’m playing. ” A Chicago native, Jonah grew up immersed in the music community built around the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. “I remember dragging my parents to see the Art Ensemble of Chicago at Mandel Hall, when I was a teenager,” recalls Parzen-Johnson. “That show got me exploring musicians like Roscoe Mitchell, Fred Anderson, and Mwata Bowden, who were big proponents of solo music. I love their playing and writing, but their solo music always felt kind of distant.” Jonah stumbled upon Neil Young’s live at Massey Hall Concert later on. “Sometimes I just listen to the talking tracks in between the songs on that record. He makes those moments a central part of his performance. That’s something I wish people thought about more with experimental music. I want to be a story teller, and to make that happen I have to create an environment where people feel comfortable diving into the songs with me as I play them, an environment where they can understand the stories behind the compositions. That has to happen live, so touring is really important to me.” Since the release of his debut album, Michiana, in 2012 Jonah has spent a lot of time on the road. He’s toured over twenty thousand miles across the US and back, playing in venues like The Stone and Zebulon in NYC, The Velvet Lounge in Chicago, The Royal Room in Seattle, and The Center for New Music in San Francisco and sharing bills with Celestial Shore, Landlady, Steve Lehman, and Brian Chase among others. “Touring is a really fun way to get my music out there, but its become about more than that for me. Musicians are around because they are pollinators. Hopping between towns, grabbing ideas that stick with them and sharing them with new people. I know folks everywhere are wondering how we’re going to fix these broken systems, but they don’t always want to talk about this stuff, it’s easier to just get nostalgic. I want to interrupt that cycle, get some conversations going, and help jump-start some solutions. That’s what I’ll be thinking about when I hit the road this spring.” Contact: Adam Downey - Clandestine Media - adam@northern-spy.com

OH! GUNQUIT are a London five-piece that formed in 2011 blending their love of wild garage punk, exotica, raw rhythm’n’blues and surf-trash. To date, they have put out two self-released 7” singles through Rough Trade, the second being single of the week in Artrocker magazine. This is retro pop at its killer best. Live on stage, the fiery, exotic sound on Eat Yuppies And Dance has been described as a cross between The Cramps and The B-52’s, a unique blizzard of horns, spirited howls, buzzsaw guitars, hula hoops and fun, riotous rock’n’roll abandon, a crazy road trip of B-movies, freak shows, twisted carnivals, and adventuring. 1. Screaming guitars, brutal, primal drumming and a twisted, wailing saxophone cutting through it all.. The whole thing is done with a sense of humour and is a joy to behold. Atomic Suplex have toured Europe and Asia sharing the stage with such luminaries as The Hives, Guitar Wolf, Fat White Family, Buzzcocks, and many more.. Every song is a one to two minute burst of distorted guitars, insane vocals, the occasional bit of sax. And, you know what? It’s brilliant. If you want some raw, visceral rock’n’roll thrills this band comes highly recommended. One Man Party, 14 Inches of Fist, Set It On Fire, Wild Love, Firing Line, S. U. P. L. E. X, Two Girls, J.D. All-star power pop rock act The Crunch release their sensational second album. After winning critical acclaim for the compelling mix of pop hooks and punk grit on debut ‘Busy Making Noise’, vocalist Sulo Karlsson (Diamond Dogs), guitarist Mick Geggus (Cockney Rejects), bassist Dave Tregunna (Sham 69 ) and drummer Terry Chimes (The Clash) wasted no time recording the follow-up. The new record retains and builds upon many of the hallmarks established on ‘Busy Making Noise’; most notably an enviable knack for huge, power-pop hooks, and massive, memorable blasts of melody. ‘Brand New Brand’ also brings another crop of evocative slowburners. One standout is the immense ‘Save The Glow’, which swells from an understated, semi-acoustic opening, into a swaying, lighters-aloft anthem. Lonely Beat Of The Heart; Limited Edition; Neon Madonna; Banner Of Faith; Brand New Brand; 25 Hours A Day; Solid Rock Steady; Seeing Is Believing; Barricade Blues; Return To Form; Save The Glow; Go Back To Go

The oddball UK D.I.Y punk rock pair return with their fourth self-produced and self-recorded album. The Lovely Eggs have been relative outsiders to the music industry since 2006 with their unrelenting touring, single and album releases. They turn normality on its head, squeezing it through their peculiar surreal mincing machine and blending it with fuzzed out guitar and crashing drums. Vicious Rumors – Vicious Rumors CANDY267 5055300384935 Vicious Rumors were amongst the pioneering acts of the Bay Area scene and, despite their uncompromising style, they also earned a welldeserved reputation as the thinking man’s power-metal outfit. Never afraid to infuse their sound with intricate twists and turns, the musicianship indicated that they might have had more in common with progressive metal than pure thrash. Following two independent albums and gaining a solid following, they eventually signed a major deal with Atlantic Records and cut this self-titled album. Issued in 1990, it is a record of extreme maturity, harnessing their power-metal onslaught with precision and force. Don’t Wait Up For Me; World Church; On The Edge; Ship Of Fools; Can You Hear It; Down To The Temple; Hellraiser; Electric Twilight; Thrill Of The Hunt; Axe And Smash
Rage – Out Of Control CANDY260 5055300384812 Signed to the French based Carerre label, home of Saxon, Rose Tattoo and Dokken, Liverpool’s Rage quickly established themselves as an influential part of the emerging NWOBHM scene. This debut album, issued in 1981, was produced by man of the moment Pete Hinton (Saxon, Demon) giving the material a contemporary, rough-hewn, sheen. Musically, the songs focussed on tight riffs and memorable hooks, giving vocalist Dave Lloyd a platform to ably demonstrate his range and style. Out Of Control; What Have I Done Wrong?; She’s On Fire; Roll The Dice; Fallen Idol; Money; I Don’t Wanna Leave; Rage; Thank That Woman Bonus Tracks: Double Dealer; Bootliggers
Rage – Nice n’ Dirty CANDY261 5055300384829 ‘Nice ‘N Dirty’, the band’s second album, originally issued in 1983, played to their strengths, showcasing a determined and rugged sound befitting the hard rock zeitgeist prevalent at the time. It also signalled the addition of second guitarist Terry ‘Tony’ Steers, helping to reinforce their more muscular approach. American Radio Stations; Wasted Years; Woman; Heartbreaker; Silver And Gold; Long Way From Home; Only Child; Blame It On The Night; Wild Cat Woman; Ready To Go
Rage – Run For The Night CANDY262 5055300384836 Their third album was the band’s bid to hitch their wagon to the more melodic, arguably AOR, side of rock genre. Self-produced, the band enlisted the help of fellow Liverpudlian songwriter Steve Morris, of revered AOR rockers Export, to help with material. For the first time they also utilised well-crafted keyboard support lending a bold sheen to what was to be their final album Cry From A Hill; Fantasy; Can’t Say No; Light Years; Ladykiller; No Prisoners; Run For The Night; Badlands; Never Before; Rock Fever
